For families that place good food high on their list of priorities, educating their wee ones about the joys of sushi may be far more important than teaching about bunnies and balls and flowers. But even those who don't know futomaki from hatahata will relish the playful rhymes and lush collages in Amy Wilson Sanger's wonderful First Book of Sushi.
Miso in my sippy cup,
tofu in my bowl.
Crab and avocado
fill my California roll.
English-speaking tots will love wrapping their lips around Japanese words such as tekka maki, ebi, and wasabi, and will soon be joining in the bouncy recitation of sushi favorites for the very young. This bright little board book, with its gorgeous array of patterns and textured, mixed-media collages, looks good enough to eat. And who knows, it might even inspire picky eaters to try a little egg tamago or squishy salmon roe (otherwise known as ikura)! (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
For the littlest fans of that favorite Japanese finger food comes a sturdy board book sure to inspire giggles (and even some growling stomachs!). Sanger's textural, mixed media and cut paper collages form an ideal accompaniment to her bouncy rhyming text to captivate/fascinate even the most finicky eaters. Whether a temaki know-it-all or clueless about ebi, First Book of Sushi is a welcome side dish for nori experts and novices of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful little boar book.......2007-06-01
This is a really cute little book. Perfect for any sushi loving parent. For the food lovers, she's done books for lots of different cuisines.
my baby LOVES these books.......2007-05-23
i was given a stack of these board books at my baby shower. First Book of Sushi, Yum Yum Dim Sum, Urban Babies Wear Black, as well as, the Petit Connoisseur: Art and The Petit Connoisseur: fashion, my kid LOVES them!! As stated they are BOARD books so your older kids who can actually read may get bored but for the little ones these are fun rhyming colorful introductions to different foods and such! And they are virtually indestructible! Great addition to any new baby room!
cool and quirky board book.......2007-05-07
My one year old son loves this board book! We actually have the entire series. It's fun and creative, and I don't have to worry about him ripping the pages. We are hooked!
First Book of Sushi - Tiny Little Book.......2007-01-22
This is a very little kid's book, one of those small 5.5 inch x 5.5 inch, indestructable, 10 thick little pages. I was surprised when I received it. Almost too infant-like for my 5 yr old. It was a little fun though and I didn't return it. Just skimpy, a little disappointing. Honestly, can't remember if it was adequately decribed in the Amazon description. For $6.95, you decide.
Turning raw fish into fun rhymes.......2006-11-05
This is a fun twist on your typical children's book. Its got colorful pictures and whimsical rhymes, but the funniest part is the subject matter -- sushi: "I'll take yellowtail hamachi / and a red maguro slice. / Big, BIG futomaki has so many grains of rice!"
I'm sure my kids don't understand exactly what what's being talked about (and sometimes I don't either). But there's a pleasant pace to the rhymes and the words are fun to say out loud ("tekka maki" and "kappa maki" sound a bit like the nonsense phrases of Dr. Seuss).
Don't forget to notice that the last line of the story is actually on the back of the book. The first couple times I read it to my kids I didn't see that, and the book seemed to come to a puzzlingly abrupt end.
Book Description
Simple songs and rhymes are an excellent way to familiarize young children with another language. Un, Deux, Trois, a collection of 25 traditional nursery rhymes, is a delightful way to introduce French. An illustrated vocabulary features simple words and phrases that are easy to learn and that can be used in games or everyday life. Children are encouraged to repeat the phrases and sing along with the rhymes, and the included CD lets them know how both should sound. The lively illustrations and amusing rhymes make learning a new language fun. A guide for parents translates more difficult phrases.
Customer Reviews:
Fun way to introduce French with sound & words.......2007-06-03
My one year old and I love listening to the CD that came with this book. Songs are sung by kids & adults. Each song has the words written out in the book too.
Fun French Rhymes.......2007-05-30
My 5 year old granddaughter and I had a delightful time repeating and reading along with this child's French Rhyme book and CD. By the end of it she could repeat 3 French words perfectly with a big grin on her face! She took the book out the following night for repeat reading and for dancing to the musique! :)
Not so great.......2007-05-26
The book is all french rhymes, riddles, a lot of nonsense and very difficult for young children. The CD is hard to listen to. I have it in the car for my daughters and it is too hard to follow.
If you want your kids to begin with french, the CD First Steps in French is wonderful. In a month my kids are singing in french.
C'est fantastique!.......2007-03-08
My one and a half year old enjoys this book and CD very much. It will be great when she gets older too because the rhymes are simple and they incorporate many things like numbers, body parts, days of the weeks etc...
I catch myself singing these songs throughout the day. It is a wonderful way to introduce French to your child. I highly recommend it.
A hit at our house!.......2007-02-13
We recently bought this and our boys (6y, 4y, and 2y) love it! It has lots of chanting which the boys love to repeat. The book is colorful and easy to follow along with. The current version came with a cd, not a cassette.
Book Description
In Father's First Steps, pediatricians Robert and James Sears discuss 25 important aspects of new fatherhood, including supporting the mother during labor and beyond, bonding with baby, deciphering baby talk, being a good husband and a good father, and much more. With its emphasis on fathers taking an active role in parenting, this is a book that every new mother-to-be will definitely want their partner to read.
Customer Reviews:
Best New Father Book I've Found.......2007-08-27
I'm not quite a father yet, but will be soon. I've read a few of these new father books, and many are just terrible -- full of lame jokes, and treating us like we're bumbling, beer-swilling, EPN-watching idiots. This is the first one of these that gave me what I was looking for -- straight, no-nonsense info (with some quiet humor included) about diaper-changing, baby-holding, money-saving, and pep-talk advice on being an involved dad, and treating us like we have the intelligence, humor and eagerness to raise a child. Don't let the cutesy-poo cover and illustrations put you off, this is a great book for dads AND moms (my wife loved it too).
Made my husband feel a lot better.......2007-06-11
I ordered this when my husband was feeling pretty down in the first week after our son was born. I wish I'd gotten it much sooner. He felt much better that what he was experiencing was so normal, and that the things he'd been doing were exactly the right things to do. And, he picked up a few good tricks, and has the benefit of another perspective. Short and sweet, easy read, and I think it really helped him out.
Practical Fun Read.......2006-08-16
I wish I could have read this before my twin boys were born. The style was honest and fun while giving simple and straight forward pro-tips. It is a quick and enjoyable read. The practical content answers a number of key questions, I had as a new father.
Informative and humorous!! .......2006-06-17
What a wonderful approach to fatherhood! Humor is a great tool to teach about sometimes sensitive topics and it makes reading quite a bit more enjoyable! Having 4 children of our own we feel this book is a must for all new fathers!!
It's about time we had a book for new Dads!.......2006-06-13
Thank you for this funny and welcoming approach to Fatherhood! Dads contribute to the development of their baby in many unique ways and you help us to understand the role of a new father better. A must read for every new Dad!

It's never too early to build a child's vocabulary, and the updated My First Brain Quest--designed specifically for 2- and 3-year-olds--is a fun way to get started. The tall, skinny plastic box contains three decks (the cards are attached so they fan out on a hinge) with a total of 400 questions, and a spongy, nontoxic Max toy monkey. The idea is to have the toddler bond with the monkey, so the child associates the cards with playtime! Deck One offers a full day with Max from the time he wakes up until bedtime. For example, a full-page cartoon of Max in his colorful toy-ridden bedroom asks, "Who just woke up? What is Max wearing? What do you see in his room?" The cards break down into smaller illustrations with object and activity identification ("What is Max doing? He's putting on his slippers" or "What is this called? A clock.") We follow Max through breakfast, school, music lessons, and more. Deck Two introduces children to seasonal activities, including trick-or-treating and playing on a snowy day. Deck Three explores the world, following Max from the mall to a picnic in the country to a farm. The Brain Quest series is a wonderful vehicle for parents to play and learn with their wee ones, and paves the way for a lifetime fascination with words. (Ages 2 to 3)

Wonderful book .......2007-06-12
My son absolutely love this product. He always ask for SAM. This is helping him a lot to use his words.
Late talker loves these cards.......2007-04-01
I bought these for my son, he is 30 months old and a late talker. They were great for helping build his vocabulary. It gave me great ideas of topics to talk to him about and he loved the little monkey. I say "Let's play with Max" and he runs and gets his cards. We substitute storytime before bed with the cards on some nights and it works out great. I will definitly continue to buy these cards as he gets older.
My First Brain Quest.......2007-03-08
This is a great learning tool for 2-4 year olds. Also great to take on trips to keep your child entertained.
Learning.......2006-01-03
We have had this for awhile now and have recently been playing this...great learning and fun. Amazing just how much your little one will know using these cards. All the cards stay together so you don't have to worry getting any of them lost.
A great Learning game!!!
A Fun Way to Learn.......2005-08-22
We bought this set when my daughter was about 2 1/2, she loved Max the Monkey, and it was a really good way to teach her how to relate words with pictures. She amazed me with how much she already knew, then again some of the things that she didn't know amazed me too!My only complaint is that Max is not more durable, I mean come on, who makes a two year olds toy out of foam?? I would reccomend this product, I have already bought the 3-4 year old version of brainquest.

Illus. in full color. "With a jovial bus driver as host, readers have quite a ride ahead of them as the bus bounces through what appears to be a French town. In her first book the artist humorously injects the familiar song with cheerful new life."--Horn Book.
Customer Reviews:
The Pages of This Book go Flip and Turn.......2006-09-08
Timing is everything to read this book, which is really a song. Although the notes are at the end to hint how the words should be read, without hearing it sung first and reading it out loud in a dull monotonous fashion a toddler may look at the reader as if to ask "Why bother?" Then I heard it on one of the CDs and now the words flow beautifully and make me read and read, read and read, all through the night.
A great book with many things to talk about.......2006-07-21
I bought this when my daughter was 13 months, and after 7 months she still loves this book. There are different people in the bus - adults, kids, elderly, pets, etc., and many things happening on and off the bus.
When my daughter refuses to drink her milk, I'll turn to the page where the baby is happily drinking from the bottle, then she will take her cup and start drinking.
Try Raffi's CD as well. He sang the song to a cheerful tones with kids in the background - my daughter loves it.
Love it!.......2006-03-17
This is the second copy I'm buying as the 1st one was read until it fell apart! My 14 month old LOVES this book.
Good version for toddlers.......2005-10-20
My 18-month-old grandson enjoys this song (and "bus" was one of his first words). He isn't real excited about the book yet, but I think he will enjoy it later when he can sing it himself. My only problem with the book is that two of the pages were upside down. But because it's a board book, I was able to separate the pages with my nailfile and paste them back in right side up with library glue (one of the perks of being a librarian). Vona Van Cleef, librarian/gramma
My 17 month old's favorite book!.......2005-10-02
My daughter calls this book "Vroom vroom!" It is by far her favorite. She liked the song before she ever saw the book and the illustrations in this version fascinate her -- so many things to point to and discuss! Just today, she propped up this book so her dolls could read it, too.
I was not bothered by the baby getting a bottle at all. I breastfed my daughter, but she often got a bottle of pumped milk, especially when we were out and about.
Book Description
Kika has lots of words to share with you! Loving words like
kiss and
hug. Playful words like
ball and
bounce. How-I-feel words like
happy and
silly. Even my-favorite-people words like
mother and
father and
baby! Funny, expressive, and unique, Kika brings verve and personality to all the words in baby's growing world.
Customer Reviews:
So cute!!!.......2007-04-21
My 15 month old loves this book! She even loves the inside cover where there are small illustrations. She points to all the pictures and says, "Dis?" and I name the objects. The brightly colored illustrations are great. My only complaint is that the pages are regular paper (not a board book).

It's picnic time, but Biscuit isn't invited! Do Biscuit and his puppy friend, Puddles, really have to go play in the yard while the kids eat all the picnic food?
Any child who has ever longed to join in a forbidden party will relish the outcome of Biscuit's newest adventure in this warm and humorous picture book.
Customer Reviews:
Biscuit Wants to go on a Picnic. Woof! Woof!.......2003-08-27
The Girl-in-the-Purple-Sneakers and two friends (the girl who owns Puddles, and her brother) are going to have a picnic. They have everything; sandwiches, juice, cookies and even a big cake. But this picnic is just for the kids. Biscuit, Puddles and Daisy are not invited.
But Biscuit wants to join in. In typical Biscuit fashion, the little yellow dog gets involved until everyone, including Puddles, Daisy and some birds, get into the act and everyone gets to enjoy the picnic.
A nice simple story accompanied by beautiful artwork.
