Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very comforting.......2007-10-09

A very dear friend passed this along to me after my husband passed away last January, and I bought it to pass along to a friend who lost her husband recently. I have both read the daily meditation, and read random meditations. Both ways, I found this very comforting and supportive. There seems to be an entry for every different situation I have confronted -- loneliness, too much company, getting involved in events again, whatever I have faced. I highly recommend this to those who have recently lost a loved one -- or to those looking for a way to comfort their friends or loved ones facing a loss.

5 out of 5 stars Healing After Loss: Daily Meditations for Working through Grief.......2007-09-29

This book ws given to me as a gift when my mom died 7 years ago. It was an amazing comfort during those many months of dealing with my loss. Since then I have probably purchased a dozen more copies and given them to friends who have lost someone. I hear again and again how this little book helped them. I recommend it to anyone grieving for someone they have lost.

5 out of 5 stars Hospice perspective.......2007-08-25

I was provided this book years ago after the loss of a child and found it very helpful. I donate several every year for use in our hospice grief group.

5 out of 5 stars Very Glad I found this book........2007-08-24

Having had several deaths in the family within a year, I was looking for anything to help cope with all the different feelings I was having. This meditation book was very good. It was comforting, reassuring, and enlightening. Because the readings were short, it was easier to say focused for just enough time to read them. I have bought 2 more to give to others who are grieving and hope it helps them too.

5 out of 5 stars This book has been nice reading after the loss of my husband........2007-08-15

This book is an easy read, has nice meditations and thoughts for the day. After the loss of my husband, everyone gave me books on grief and coping with loss. I wasn't ready to read those books but I did receive this one as a gift and it's still my favorite. Even if I don't read it everyday, I can pick it up and read through and reflect on my life with my husband.

Book Description

"Dear Social Anxiety Sufferers (Your Friends and Family),

Everyone has experienced fleeting anxiety in social situations. But perhaps your self-consciousness intensely insinuates itself into one or more important aspects of your everyday life. If so, you likely suffer from the agonizing pangs of social fear. Perhaps you dread meeting people, giving a speech, using a public restroom, eating in public, talking to your boss, or having your social skills or work observed or your competence assessed. Or perhaps you feel threatened in new social situations where you don't know the rules, avoid such situations altogether, or just want to escape. We all experience social anxiety a little differently yet we're all riding the same skittish horse.

When our social fears are intense and persistent, we have social anxiety disorder/social phobia (SA/SP - "sasp" for short). This means every day we're forced to confront the pain of being in the spotlight, evaluated, or being embarrassed by the very social situations we long to embrace. Socially we find ourselves on the periphery of life's dance, trying to follow the choreographed patterns and rhythm, but usually seeming to be one beat out of synch, zigging when we should zag. Often feeling like the butt of a cosmic joke, we see ourselves as the ball in a pinball machine, bouncing from bumper to bumper, missing targets, and always on the verge of "tilt." This is being diagonally-parked in a parallel universe.

Clinically too, having SA/SP puts us in another dimension. Even though SA/SP is the most common anxiety disorder and the third most common psychiatric disorder after depression and alcoholism, it's the least-diagnosed, least-widely understood, and most under-treated. Few mental health professionals are well-versed in the condition or its treatment even as the number of sufferers continues to increase.

Making our situation worse, most of us with SA/SP don't know we have a treatable disorder, that we're not "just shy," and that we can and need to get help. But even when we understand this, we're often reluctant to seek professional help because we're ashamed of the fear and worried that our complaints won't be taken seriously. Then, when we finally do muster the courage to do it, we're often hobbled by the very anxiety for which we seek help: Talking with and being evaluated by others. Together, these factors help keep this major health problem nearly invisible.

This comprehensive book was written to show you how you can:

*Significantly and effectively alleviate your SA/SP pain;
*Significantly improve your daily functioning; and
* Effectively work toward your potential.

You benefit from the uniqueness of my perspective. I'm both a social psychologist working in the areas of social and personal effectiveness, interpersonal and presentation skills, and anxiety management and someone who has struggled for 22 years to successfully overcome SA/SP. (I used to worry endlessly about what others might think about me and my not meeting their expectations.) As a result, I understand how it feels to be living- and working through this often-incapacitating disorder and where we SA/SPers need to specifically concentrate our efforts to improve our lives.

You benefit from my knowledge of SA/SPers' concerns, issues, and desires - the result of my two years of talking with and listening to SA/SPers online via lists, news groups, and chats. You benefit from my research, teaching, consulting, training, and coaching experience, as well as my association with professionals in the SA/SP trenches.

To make your SA/SP more understandable and amenable to change, this book provides you with not only the theories and salient research on its origin, triggers, and maintaining mechanisms, but also a broad range of standard and alternative clinical approaches, life strategies, motivational exercises, and empathy. And because I know from extensive experience that your having exercises just thrown at you isn't likely to help you empower yourself and succeed, this book takes you back to square-one. It gives you the psychological preparation you need to jump-start, enable, and maintain your recovery process.

Because we SA/SPers tend to have difficulties with clinicians, this book takes the mystery and risk out of locating and talking to them and guides you through the process: From initiating your search to surviving your first appointment. It tells you what to expect and how to prepare for it. Because we SA/SPers struggle with presenting ourselves socially (whether communicating, socializing, dating, or finding a job), this book addresses each significant life activity, breaks it down into sequential, digestible chunks so you can absorb, assimilate, and achieve it. And, because the Internet has great importance and value for SA/SPers as one of the few means of establishing relationships and comfortable communication we have, the book pinpoints the services and resources available for those with SA/SP.

Since how you think, feel, and behave determines how you interact with your environment (and conversely), this book focuses on your perceptions, emotions, beliefs, and self-presentation. Using real-life stories, typical problems, and their solutions, the user-friendly format takes you logically, incrementally, step-by-baby-step through the multiple-level processes of your recovery. Through concise explanations, thought questions, self-quizzes, and exercises, you systematically develop and apply your cognitive and behavioral strategies to achieve your recovery goals.

In this process you'll assess your social anxiety, determine where you're headed, how to get there, and how you'll know when you've arrived. You'll act as a scientist doing experiments. You'll learn, practice, and apply new skills that will constructively change the way you think about and cope with not only your SA/SP but also the world outside yourself. You'll see yourself make positive changes.

Using this book's clinically-proven methods, you can reduce your:

* anxiety and fear
* depression
* negative thinking
* anger
* loneliness
* procrastination
* shame and embarrassment

and increase your:

* motivation to make change
* confidence and self-esteem
* ability to handle stress
* initiating and maintaining conversations
* problem solving
* decision making
* expressing yourself appropriately
* patience
* listening to others
* social effectiveness
* dealing with criticism
* dating
* networking
* creating your own job and career opportunities
* understanding of social anxiety, yourself, and others.

However, just reading this book isn't likely to ameliorate your SA/SP any more than just watching others exercise will cause you to lose weight and tone your body (although awareness may provide important identification, hints, and hope).

The book's recovery program is action-oriented, requiring your active, committed, persistent participation in order for you to alter all those factors contributing to your SA/SP: Your automatic fear arousal, negative thoughts, mistaken beliefs and assumptions, unrealistic expectations, and counter-productive behaviors.

Note: As much as we all may wish it to be true, there is no finger-snapping, lamp-rubbing, "Shazaam!" magical solution to SA/SP. It took many factors interacting over many years to bring you to your present state. So recovery will not be instantaneous. But if you take the time to make the necessary structured effort toward recovery (whether that includes therapy, medication, or both), you will quickly begin to experience small but significant changes in your thoughts, feelings, and behavior - glimpsing what it'll be like "without SA/SP."

2 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2006-11-03

I reviewed this book looking for material that would be helpful for patients who are suffering from social anxiety disorder. The book is poorly written, badly edited, and seems to go off topic many times in a seemingly effort to fill pages. It has some good information, but it would not be my first pick for seeking educational or support help.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful!.......2006-03-18

Suited for the average person, this book contains information on profesional help via medications and therapies, non-professional support, and self-help assesment tools.

The cartoons in the book don't rise to the level of the text.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource - demystify your experience of anxiety.......2005-11-16

The book contains a wide variety of information, ideas and suggestions about what social anxiety is, what causes it and what keeps it going. By choosing this book, you can be sure that you will be exposed to many angles of understanding social anxiety - from emotions, stress and negative self-talk to medication, food and nutrition.

The author writes with a respect for the reader, openly offering the information rather than shoving it down your throat as if it is the only truth.

Books like this one play an important role in liberating and affirming our human spirits by showing us that we are not alone and that in fact we share similar experiences despite our years of suffering in shame and isolation.

The author provides several interesting chapters on how to begin the recovery process by connecting with our motivation and decision-making power. The author then goes on to techniques for buffing up our social interaction capabilities, with the idea that if we strengthen our ability to talk, listen and present an image to others, that our social anxiety will be reduced.

If skill is your problem, then this area of the book can probably offer some serious steps forward. If, however, the idea of interacting with others is too painful or if your anxiety is more about your feelings than your skill level, then this book can be a great beginning for some more deeper work.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Techniques.......2005-08-26

This book is different from most self-help books because it offers solid self-help techniques instead of just explaining the psychology and background behind the disorder. Author Dayhoff isn't just an observer of SA/SP, she's been there too. I would have rated this book a 5 because I actually improved after reading it, but I had to give it a 4 for two reasons: one, the book seems a bit disorganized so it's hard to retain all the information without constantly re-reading; and two, because she uses psychology terminology that you would not understand unless you had at least one course in General Psychology. But don't let that stop you from reading it if you suffer from SA/SP, because it really is helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Anxiety Assistance.......2005-07-21

This book is very well written by a doctor who has suffered from anxiety for many years. The first few chapters really help you to understand how you got where you are today and creates a great foundation for the "self-help" sections to follow. Some sections of the book are a little more technical than I had anticipated, but one more time through it with some more coffee and you will get the message being presented. This review was written by the spouse of someone suffering from anxiety.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating, challenging, informative.......2004-05-22

If you are looking for quick fixes and simplistic solutions to conflict this book is not for you. The highly analytical approach illuminates the complexities of conflict management. Folger et al do an excellent job exploring the theoretical and psychological background necessary to evaluate the implicit and explicit causes and conditions involved in and effectively pursue solutions to disputes at mutiple levels. You wont find this book on the NY Times bestsellers list because it is a textbook. Graduate student and practiotioners can expect to draw upon it as an invaluable resource. Unlike most of those popular books this book doesn't just 'get you to yes', it actually has more weight and substance than most everything else out there. If you want a popular book on the topic of conflict that most non-professionals will find approachable read "Difficult Conversations." You will find it enjoyable and highly accessible.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on Writing Workshop that I've read........2003-06-20

If you can only get one book on teaching writing using the Writer's Workshop model let it be this one. It's detailed, full of practical tips, but most important--you will be INSPIRED! I immediately started my own writer's notebook after I read this book. One caveat...this is not a book that you can pick up on Sunday night because you want to start the program on Monday morning. This book is written to be read and re-read, pondered and poured over. That having been said, this is NOT just a book of theory, it thoroughly and lovingly explains all the nuts-and-bolts of the workshop.

Book Description

Do you remember the topic of the last speech you heard? If not, you're not alone. In fact, studies show that audiences remember only 10 to 30 percent of speech or presentation content. Given those bleak statistics, why do we give speeches at all?

We give them, says communications expert Nick Morgan, because they remain the most powerful way of connecting with audiences since ancient Greek times. But as we've evolved to a more conversational mode of public speaking, thanks to television, we have forgotten much of what the Greeks taught us about the nonverbal aspects of speech-giving: the physical connection with audiences that can create an almost palpable emotional bond.

Morgan says this "kinesthetic connection" comes from truly listening to your audience-not just with your brain but with your body. In this book, he draws from more than twenty years as a speech coach and consultant, combining the best of ancient Greek oratory with modern communications research to offer a new, audience-centered approach to public speaking.

Through entertaining and insightful examples, Morgan illustrates a three-part process-focusing on content development, rehearsal, and delivery-that will enable readers of all experience levels to give more effective, passion-filled speeches that move audiences to action.

AUTHORBIO: Nick Morgan is Editor of the Harvard Management Communication Letter and founder of Public Words, a communications coaching company.

5 out of 5 stars Great guidance for speakers who want to change the world (or even those who don't).......2007-02-04

Working the Room provides great guidance for speakers who want to improve their persuasiveness. In fact, it's the best book on that subject I've ever read. (And I've read quite a few.)

The title of this book, Working the Room, misled me at first. The book seemed to be about the art of making your way through a room full of people -- shaking hands, chatting briefly, greeting people you know, networking.

But that's not what it is about at all. Working the Room instead focuses only on speaking. Large groups or small, the principles discussed will help anyone who has to talk to others.

Two things make this book stand out -- examples and suggestions. The examples, from some of history's greatest speeches to more mundane stories, tell the tale very powerfully. And the suggestions, all drawn from Nick Morgan's experience, have helped me in my speaking and persuading efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Working the Room.......2005-04-14

Wow! Nick Morgan hit the nail on the head with this book on "Audience-Centered Speaking." The book came highly recommended by some very credible and talented public speakers and it delivered as promised. The author states that the only reason to give a speech is to change the world by moving the audience to take action. He starts off with the history of speech, going all the way back to Ancient Greece and brings us through time to modern communication mediums (radio and television), which have permanently and profoundly changed our expectations of public speakers.
He also brings to light several truths about public speaking: most people hate doing it and most don't do it well. So, why then, do we give speeches? He says we do so because speeches are still the most powerful way of connecting with an audience. The author presents us with a process geared toward capturing the audience and engaging them: focusing on content development, rehearsal and delivery.
Whether a novice or season veteran, delivering a speech to 5 people or 500, anyone can learn how to put together a speech that will change the world.

5 out of 5 stars Working the Room.......2004-07-08

This should be a 'must' reading, studying, practicing, emulating, in short - the bible for those who do presentations.

5 out of 5 stars A STIMULATING, INSIGHTFUL, VALUABLE BOOK!.......2003-08-05

The author introduces the idea of developing a kinesthetic connection with the audience by using opportunities for making intellectual, emotional, and even physical contact. The book provides specific strategies to help presenters prepare, rehearse, and master the art of giving speeches that challenge thinking and spark action. STERN'S MANAGEMENT REVIEW finds this a stimulating, insightful and valuable work.

5 out of 5 stars Turbo Charging Your Presetation Skills.......2003-07-11

Finally, a truly great book concerning the art/craft of public speaking. If you heard advice like "picture the audience in their underwear", then you owe it to yourself to read "Working the Room". In this insightful and eminently useful text, Nick Morgan explodes the myths of bad speech-making and crafts a better mousetrap.

Morgan's central theme is that the the only reason to give a speeach is to "change the world". According to the author, a speech is not a collection of information rather it is a forum to showcase the unique passion of the speaker to sway hearts and minds in the audience. Morgan takes the reader through a thorough process of crafting a speech, rehearsing it, and rendering it to an audience in an entirely new and effective way. I guarantee that you will never think of giving a presentation the same way again. Hint: It has nothing to do with the quality of your PowerPoint.

Morgan's style is first rate. Filled with useful insights and stories, the book is lazer precise, witty, and absolutely right on time. No fuzzy thinking here. Just solid advice from a unique perspective. It's also an excellent length. It isn't too short and at the end, like many great reads, it leaves you wanting more!

If you are a person who presents on a regular basis or even if you are a neophyte looking to hone your speaking skills, there is only one book to buy and that's "Working the Room."

I completely agree with D. roszkowski "book m. dano". If you've read about the millions of horrible experiences that customers have had to deal with when it comes to Best (Worst) Buy, you would never step foot in one of their stores again. They have to get one of the worst retailers that exist now and hopefully, they'll be going out of business soon.
Save your money and don't waste it on this book or any book that supports this company.

if you like fiction... you will LOVE this book. it is the farthest thing from truth and reality you can ever dream of. Best (Worst) Buy is going in the hole because of their poor customer service. this book fails to mention that there is a website (not blog... actual full-blown website) called bestbuysux.org that chronicles how horrible of a company they are by both customers AND employees! don't waste your money on this book of printed lies!

5 out of 5 stars Phil Ruffner, Sundyne.......2003-07-18

I found the book to be interesting and challenging enough to order a copy for each member of my management team. My take on this book is that it provides a great deal of insight into managing the evolution process. As with most management texts, the most interesting and exciting parts of that insight show up in the latter third of the book. I suppose you could skip the first 175 pages and still get the flavor of what RHR and Best Buy did, but I encourage you to read it all. The last 100 pages will be your reward for getting through the first 175.

Things I noted in particular:

1) Early in the book, the authors set up the concept of the Head, Heart and Hands. The Head talks about getting the concept. The Heart talks about motivation, the desire to apply what was learned. The Hands is about putting the concepts into action and producing results.

2) There is a lot of discussion about the role of the Senior Managers in this process, I suggest you test yourself against the model that develops and see if you meet the authors' expectations.

3) If you don't read any other part of the book, I ask you to read pages 216 and study the table on page 234.

4) On page 216 you will see "When people set out to measure the effects of change on business results such as productivity, sales, profit, and employee turnover, they are measuring the outcomes of a process. Measuring results does not provide much information on how the change is proceeding or what issues might be impeding or furthering the change process." We all certainly focus on a couple of the measures cited - to what extent do we sacrifice the longer view in doing so?

The authors got me with the following: "Knowing the score at the end of a game gives you limited information about how the individuals played, where they need to improve, or what's getting in the way of their achieving a better score."

Sound familiar?

5 out of 5 stars BIG Change at YOUR Company.......2003-05-13

Three interesting observations...
1) I'm surprised Best Buy management would allow these details to become public
2) I liked the way the consultants admitted they learned something, too
3) There are many paragraphs where one could change the name of the company from "Best Buy" to your company's name, and the text would apply to YOU.

5 out of 5 stars Big Change at Best Buy is a Must Buy.......2003-04-22

Therer are lots of books on transformational change out there. Few if any compare to Big Change at Best Buy for its candor, its practicality or its thoroughness. The authors take the reader on a no holds barred 5 year journey. The guts of the company are laid bare for better or for worse as senior executives share their struggles, their doubts, their hard won successes on the road to true breakthroughs in perfomance.

This is fundamentally a book about how to improve your financial results by changing your formulas for success. The authors prescribe a "head, heart and hands" change methodology which not only makes sense intuitively, but seems to work when applied with care by a team of consultants and insiders working closely side by side.

This is no oversimplified cookbook. The ins and outs of change are detailed in a very practical straightforward manner, leaving few stones unturned. Metaphors and analogies are used liberally to help readers get a 3D color picture and to enable them to generalize the issues faced at Best Buy to their own organizations.

Tips on how to fail at each stage of the process are very instructive in what not to do....as are the many colorful quotes from menmbers of the internal change implementation team.

This book feels real...lots of conflicts, values needing to be clarified, lessons learned about change. No sugar coating, but a happy ending nonetheless.

True change seems like it never comes without a struggle. Big Change at Best Buy chronicles both the struggles and the victories won, leaving little for the reader to imagine or reconstruct. It's all there, all the tools and the instructions for how to use 'em to fundamentally transform people, systems and culture for superior financial results.

A Wonderfully Supportive Guide from an Internationally Recognized Authority on Affairs

"Emily Brown has written a must-read book for anyone going through the searing pain of infidelity. First she deciphers the five types of affairs, then she gives clear step-by-step procedures to help both partners deal with it and even grow from it. It's a real achievement." --Marguerite Kelly, syndicated columnist, The Family Almanac and author, Marguerite Kelly's Family Almanac

"Finally, a book on affairs that pulls no punches!. . . . It's the book I'll put at the top of my list to recommend to both professionals and to husbands, wives, and lovers. Highly recommended."-Isolina Ricci, author, Mom's House, Dad's House: The Complete Guide for Parents Who Are Separated, Divorced, or Remarried

4 out of 5 stars Good for self understanding.......2006-05-30

I thought this book was pretty well written, the types of affairs etc gave a good insight into some of the reasons some people abandon their current relationship responsibilities.

It actually helped me to approach a few of my own problems - even though I've not had an affair - ie showing me some of my actions were a cry for help.

Informative, well written and definately worth a read by 'either party'.

3 out of 5 stars Too Many Books Telling You To Stay When You Should Go!.......2004-06-23

It seems that each book on affairs is absolutely sure that a marriage can survive an affair and I disagree. My husband cheated on me 5 years ago and we tried to work through it, although our marriage became a shell of what it used to be. Well, I recently found myself in an affair and thought, "Why on earth am I still married?" I picked up this book and learned I was in an EXIT AFFAIR - having met someone wonderful with the pretense to get some legs on which to leave. I was scared to death to leave the comfort zone of misery I was in - and this book tried over and over to assure me that there are ways to overcome infedilty. I must disagree - if a marriage isn't strong enough to prevent an affair, I'm not sure it can overcome it. I married the wrong person and I wish after the first affair in our marriage I had had the nerve to leave, instead I tried to so hard to work through it when I ultimately wasted 5 years with the wrong person. And I don't say that bitterly, my husband and I are friends and will remain friends, but we both know it's over - something this book probably would not approve of. I ask this book one question, if only 10% of marriages survive an affair than how is it possible that only 1% of betrayers leave their spouse? Sounds like the facts are a bit off. I suppose the moral of my reading this book is, if you know in your gut it's over, trust me, it's over. An affair is only a vehicle to speed up a broken marriage, at least that is my life lesson.

3 out of 5 stars Kind of old hat.......2003-06-22

If you have not read anything on treating affairs this is a good place to start. It holds little for the expereinced therapist.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a good guide!!!.......2002-06-13

From the first page of this book I was mesmerized by how much of myself I read about. This is a fantastic guideline regarding different types of affairs, and the provocation behind them, from all points of view. It is just a well rounded advice and support book for anyone, on any side, involved in an affair. If you are going through pain, this will definitely help you to rationalize what is going on....

2 out of 5 stars To be vulnerable to an event is not to invite it.......2002-03-23

If marriage counselors were emergency room doctors, they would always be asking questions like, "We need to understand why you stepped in front of that car, and why the driver needed you to do it." If they were cardiologists, they would be asking, "We need to understand why you needed to occlude your arteries, and why your spouse wanted you to."

An article of faith, not a fact that anyone has discovered or theory that makes any logical sense, the notion that infidelity always reveals something about the marriage continues to impose on couples demands that no one in any other realm of health care would countenance.

That an affair has occurred obviously means that the marriage was vulnerable to an affair--that the pattern of marital interaction allowed for an affair to happen. That does not mean that the affair is a function of that pattern.

Ms. Brown's book is more sensible than many guides to dealing with infidelity, though it shares the dogma that affairs are always systemic.

And the "types of affairs" she mentions hardly encompass all the reasons affairs take place. Sometimes a spouse is mentally ill, for instance. Sometimes a spouse's early upbringing left him or her with serious ethical lacunae. Sometimes we just marry the wrong people, because we are young and naive or otherwise obtuse when marrying, and the person we marry chooses a dishonorable path. Sometimes we choose dishonorable ways of feeling better because of our own shortcomings. None of those are functions of the marriage.

If you try to fit your spouse's infidelity, or your own, into Ms. Brown's views, you may be taking on responsibility for managing someone else's mental illness or moral shortcomings, or you may be shifting your mental illness or ethical immaturity to your marriage, where they can never be fixed.

Nothing ever makes an individual trustworthy except his or her own good character. An affair need not show anything wrong with the marriage, but it ALWAYS shows unreliable character--a person who does not keep promises and engages in deceit is (by definition)unreliable. If you are the betrayer, you will never become a reliable partner without reforming the moral callousness that enabled you to use betrayal to make yourself feel better. If you are the betrayed, you make a serious mistake in believing that anything you can do will make your partner more reliable. Yes, you might be able to decrease the partner's unhappiness; but then you will have taken responsibility for keeping the partner happy enough that he or she won't do what they should never be willing to do anyway.

I've seen marriages destroyed by well-meaning therapists who convince partners that something is wrong with the marriage, when there isn't, really--when some individual therapy or moral education for the betrayer could have saved the marriage. I've seen therapists ratify the betrayed person's broken sense of self by telling them they had a role in bringing it on themselves, thus forever warping their understanding of themselves and of the moral demands of marriage. Ms. Brown invites more of the same.

All in the name of a dogma-both partners contribute-that makes no scientific or logical sense.

I have about decided that books by psychologists and social workers are the last sources you should consult when dealing with infidelity. None of them, that I've found, seem to reflect much understanding of ethics, of the psychology and sociology of social institutions, of agency and patience, or even of basic logic.

      Since the first hungry wolf bravely approached an ancient cooking fire and was rewarded with a scrap of meat, our lives and the lives of dogs have been interwoven. Dogs have worked for us as warriors with ammunition strapped to their bodies. Dogs have gone through snow, icy seas, and into the dangerous rubble of collapsed buildings to rescue us. Dogs, with their spectacular ability to detect odors, keep us safe by finding drugs and explosives. They lead us if we cannot see and react for us when we cannot hear. Most of all, they love us – and we love them.

      This fascinating book by Norma Fleck Award-winner, Gena K. Gorrell, describes the dogs of history, the evolution of breeds for different purposes, and the training involved in preparing the modern-day heroes who find lost children, nab criminals, and point out contraband – heroes who just happen to be dogs.

      Book Description

      Spiritlinking, the author's original term, refers to a new way of interacting with others. Emphasizing relationships, spiritlinking affirms each individual as an expression of the energy, wisdom, spirit and culture of the group. The results of this dynamic new approach to leadership are many. Spiritlinking helps foster new ideas and service, greater productivity, a more harmonious sense of community, a way to work through resistance to change, and a deeper sense of meaning in one's work. Integrating spirituality, psychology, and extensive leadership experience, these strategies help leaders at all levels of all kinds of organizations. This important book identifies the symptoms of resistance to change, tells how to bridge factions and promote community, shows how to provide healthy leadership--and reveals how to keep it healthy. Examples, charts, practical information, and probing questions help apply the strategies to one's own situation. Of far-reaching applicability, this is concrete help for leaders in any situation--from secular businesses to churches, synagogues, and religious orders. Schools, healthcare facilities, and other organizations can be revitalized by the book. It's also useful for small-group leaders, youth ministers, and chaplains.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Discussion-Starter.......2003-12-26

      This book has enabled us to have some quality conversations with our senior management teams without resulting in contentious interchanges. We have been able to analyze some of the factors that have caused us to resist necessary changes in our business operations. Additionally, our Board of Directors has utilized the processes outlined in Spiritlinking to assist in working through resistances to transformative change. The book is clearly written without use of jargon.

      5 out of 5 stars Leadership for growth.......2001-07-04

      In Spiritlinking Leadership, Donna Markham presents a means by which leaders in various organizational settings, profits and non-profits alike, can identify the causes and behaviors associated with organizational change. By doing so, the leader can then begin to work toward building the community of persons within the organization by recognizing and linking together strengths and weaknesses. A Spiritlinking Leader is one who builds on the strengths, assists with the weaknesses and encourages the growth of the individuals for the betterment not only of the organization but also the community worldwide. I have used this text on several occasions with students in a leadership program who have all had positive reactions to it.
