Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Spencer Wells traces human evolution back to our very first ancestor in The Journey of Man. Along the way, he sums up the explosive effect of new techniques in genetics on the field of evolutionary biology and all available evidence from the fossil record. Wells's seemingly sexist title is purposeful: he argues that the Y chromosome gives us a unique opportunity to follow our migratory heritage back to a sort of Adam, just as earlier work in mitochondrial DNA allowed the identification of Eve, mother of all Homo sapiens. While his descriptions of the advances made by such luminary scientists as Richard Lewontin and Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza can be dry, Wells comes through with sparkling metaphors when it counts, as when he compares genetic drift to a bouillabaisse recipe handed down through a village's generations. Though finding our primal male is an exciting prospect, the real revolution Wells describes is racial. Or rather, nonracial, as he reiterates the scientific truth that our notions of what makes us different from each other are purely cultural, not based in biology. The case for an "out of Africa" scenario of human migration is solid in this book, though Wells makes it clear when he is hypothesizing anything controversial. Readers interested in a fairly technical, but not overwhelming, summary of the remarkable conclusions of 21st-century human evolutionary biology will find The Journey of Man a perfect primer. --Therese Littleton

Book Description

Around 60,000 years ago, a man—genetically identical to us—lived in Africa. Every person alive today is descended from him. How did this real-life Adam wind up as the father of us all? What happened to the descendants of other men who lived at the same time? And why, if modern humans share a single prehistoric ancestor, do we come in so many sizes, shapes, and races?

Examining the hidden secrets of human evolution in our genetic code, Spencer Wells reveals how developments in the revolutionary science of population genetics have made it possible to create a family tree for the whole of humanity. Replete with marvelous anecdotes and remarkable information, from the truth about the real Adam and Eve to the way differing racial types emerged, The Journey of Man is an enthralling, epic tour through the history and development of early humankind.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely great.......2007-10-10

The book presents the author's lifetime experience in using genetic indicators to develop the journey of mankind from 60,000 years ago from our ancestral home in Africa, to populate all the continents. He explains all the science and discusses contrary theories, to preserve a sound base of credibility. Numerous interesting contributory themes are also discussed, like the linkage of genetic migrations to the development of language. Overall, it is highly readible and very informative. I would highly recommend it for all those who wish to understand and appreciate our worldwide human family.

4 out of 5 stars The Journey of Genetics.......2007-09-11

The Journey of Man, recently recommended by a friend in Dallas, is a story of state-of-the-art genetic research to trace the geographic history of homo sapiens based on, as I understand it, polymorphisms or mutations in human DNA. The idea is that by identifying these and analyzing their frequency of occurance in various areas of the world, the sequence in which they occurred can be deduced and, thus, the associated physical path by which we populated the world can be identified. The conclusion is that homo sapiens began about 50,000 years ago in north-eastern Africa, then spread to Australia, etc. The thought process nicely ties in related data from archaeology, anthropology, and other sciences to support and/or refute the genetic results. A very good book, aimed at laymen and easy to read, although not particularly well-edited and sometimes over-uses analogies to the point that you wish he'd just go ahead and say it.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting thesis, very readable.......2007-01-11

The book presents, based on genetic, archeological, climatological evidence, a possible (or probable?) route for the dispersion of men through our planet, from its birth in Africa. The evidence is clearly presented, in an organized and very understandable way. It makes a very interesting reading on a subject that is as appealing as it is controversial.

5 out of 5 stars The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey.......2006-11-10

If you have ever questioned where Adam and Eve started and how planet earth was populated this is a must read. Doctor Wells located the oldest Africans he could find, took blood samples, then using his DNA knowledge, produced DNA markers. He continued this process around the world and by examining the DNA markers he could determine the path of primitive people and where they started. He produced a readable technical book that leaves the lay person with a clear understanding of where we started and where and when the first Adam and Eve left the trees and stood up on two feet.

3 out of 5 stars Clear explication of a still uncertain theory.......2006-10-31

Not much more than 50,000 years ago, something happened in East Africa that set humans on the move, and by about 10,000 years ago they had occupied almost every place on Earth, though it took another 9,000 years or so to get to the really good spots like Maui.
At least, that is how geneticist Spencer Wells interprets the evidence. The very short time span requires severe revision of the archaeological evidence.
Fully modern human bones have been found in Israel that are dated to about 100,000 years ago. Although equally modern fossils don't show up in Europe for another 60,000 years or so, the assumption has been that man's move out of Africa began at least 100,000 years ago.
Using changes in the molecular structure of the Y-chromosome, Wells and other geneticists believe that something -- he calls it the First Big Bang -- happened to a human, who lived somewhere in or near Ethiopia, around 50,000-60,000 years ago. That something did not show up in our skeletons but did mark the final evolutionary step to our current level of ability.
It could have been behavioral, although Wells is inclined to think it was some form of structural change in the brain that was closely tied to the beginning of language.
The new capabilities then made it possible to survive in novel habitats, and worsening climatic conditions in East Africa made it desirable to find some.
Genetics tells us we are all very closely related -- there is hardly any variation in our genes as between "races," a doubtful concept in human taxonomy anyway.
Variation piles up over time, particularly in long stretches of DNA that are, so far as anybody has been able to determine, inactive.
When a small band of people move, they take with them only a tiny fraction of the total variation of their larger group. Therefore, the more variation today within a local group, the longer it has been intact.
There is more variation on the Y-chromosomes of the men in an African village than among all the men in the rest of the world. Therefore, humans originated in Africa.
Geneticists believe they can not only measure but time these changes, although the timing is dependent on various assumptions that are uncertain to a degree. The goal of researchers like Wells is to interpret the gene sequences to fit other, paleontological or climatological, data without torturing the evidence too much.
The Y-chromosome determines male sex and therefore passes down from father to son. There is a strictly female record of descent in our cells, too, the mitochondrial DNA; but there is much less of it, so changes on the Y give much more precision in measuring mutations.
In "The Journey of Man," geneticists deduce that around 50,000 years ago, Africans started migrating, sticking to the coastal areas they already knew how to exploit. Within 10,000 years, they were in Australia.
We humans spread quickly but not equally quickly in every direction. In some areas, humans had to wait tens of thousands of years for the slow processes of climate to open up desert and mountain barriers that were too hard to cross.
Thus, Europe was settled very late, despite its closeness to Africa.
The same evidence says modern humans replaced Neanderthal humans; we did not descend from them.
The Y evidence also tends to shoot down evidence -- already equivocal -- that put humans in the New World more than about 12,000 years ago.
And it demonstrates, Wells says, some unexpected relationships. For example, northern Han Chinese are more closely related to their northern neighbors than they are to southern Han Chinese, despite the closer connection of their language dialects.
These various lines of evidence should allow us to retrace our ancestral steps, says Wells, but "many indigenous peoples are now refusing to participate in scientific studies."
He regrets this, not only professionally, but because the Third Big Bang -- the transportation revolution that is mixing up populations more than ever before -- will within a couple of generations obliterate the kind of genetic sleuthing that made "The Journey of Man" possible.
The Second Big Bang was agriculture, and that, he says, led humans to Hawaii. Hunter-gatherers had to go where the food was; Polynesian navigators could choose where to sail.
Wells' explication of what researchers like Wells think they know is first rate. I remain somewhat skeptical about the accuracy of the so-called molecular genetic clocks. Therefore, 3 stars. if the doubts about the 'clock' are resolved in the favor of Wells et al., then the rating would bump up to 4.

Book Description

In the tradition of empowering spiritual writers such as Ilanya Vanzant, Bishop Vashti McKenzie offers women a Christian path to personal transformation. A groundbreaking preacher who, in 2000, became the first woman to serve as bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop McKenzie is renowned for her eloquence and passion in the pulpit. Now she brings her inspirational message to readers through the biblical story of the meeting at the well between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. In twelve lessons, McKenzie interweaves the Samaritan woman's experiences with contemporary personal stories, Bible quotations, life-affirming sayings, and meditational activities. Through them she shows women that if they hold onto hope and listen for their moments of epiphany, they can accomplish anything.

This book was a christmas gift from my sister. Journey to the well helped me travel down a well worn road. You have already thought about the things that she has written about your spiritual journey, but with how much perspective. Vashti's book helped me to reflect on my image in the well. Looking at myself objectively in the well, I can change things I dont want to see.

4 out of 5 stars Food for the Spirit.......2004-06-11

I have been enriched by reading this book by Bishop McKenzie. It came to my attention as a recommended reading posted at my school, Trinity College of D.C. Not aware of Bishop McKenzie, I was intrigued by the summary of this book and decided to read it. What a tremendous blessing. As I read it, I realized that so many women travel often to the well in our daily lives. Just trying our best, no matter how painful, to do what we can until things get better. Like the Samarian woman at the well, we yearned for something different in our lives that would free us from many of the cultural, societal, and spiritual bonds that bind us. Dr. Mckenzie reminds us systematically through the additional Biblical references, exercises, and journal assignments that support this blessed encounter that we are waiting for our opportunity to meet Jesus at the well. Pausing to answer this blessed stranger's questions and boldly asking questions of Him healed her. Reading this book, we are also healed. I encourage women from all walks of life, age or religion to read this book. Like the Samarian woman who met Jesus at the well, you, too will find your voice. through His grace be healed to go forth and tell everyone of the man you just met who knew everything about you and loves you dearly. Peace

5 out of 5 stars A Journey of Self Preservation.......2004-05-25

I've always been receptive to new ideas, in fact I keep my eyes and ears open for opportunities to grow and in, Journey To The Well, Bishop Vashti M. McKenzie has nourished me. There are twelve lessons and at the end of each are exercises designed to enhance, enrich, and ready us.

Through Bishop Vashti M. McKenzie's teachings we learn not to discount our selves, how to add value to our lives, and emerge from behind veils of anonymity. In her own words she states, "That until a healthy, loving relationship that promotes your full potential happens, resist the urge to become a perpetual lady in waiting, never living fully and never feeling complete or whole. Live your life to the fullest - now and always." Her message is, "When we live to the fullest we are innovative and not merely duplicating."

Just as Jesus reached out to the masses, so is she. She speaks in terms that we all can understand and relate to. Her modern day parables are compelling and make excellent analogies.

For my review I would like to share my Poem, Dedicated to Mrs. Vashti - Journey to The Well: Chapter 10
In The Eyes Of Me:
Looking in the eyes of Me, I could do this, why not? There's nothing to see. I've been in this mirror a thousand times, there's never been anything unusual I'd find. I've stood there, done my hair, brushed my teeth and washed my face, I've been at least a thousand times to this place. Looking at me, what is the big deal, when I'm looking, I'm looking at what is real! Wait, stop what you're doing, look again for the first time. Look pass the nose the mouth, look at the eyes. Stop again, look close, look pass the brows and the eyelashes, look at your soul, look at the truth, look at the real YOU! Don't be afraid, keep your eyes open, no ones there but you and God, listen to what is spoken. Continue to look, go deeper & deeper, if you feel like you may lose yourself, rememeber He's a keeper. If your legs get weak and you feel like you can't stand, don't worry he'll carry you like the footprints in the sand. Now speak what you see. What is in the eyes of me? Holy Spirit help me, this is too hard! Oh Lord Jesus I know you are here. I'm so ashamed, I see hurt, pain & fear! Is this me! Is this who I am! This is the truth that I see inside of me? How could this be, this does not reflect you Lord, your perfect love cast out fear! But it's there, I see it, I confess it, I know it - I forgot about it, now I remember it. "I'm Awake Now"! no more pretending,no letting it reside comfortably anymore. It has to go. There is power, strength and courage beyond what I can see, it's also in the eyes of me. I'll look and keep looking; affirming God's love and the promises he's made. I'll look and keep looking until hurt, pain and fear all fade. I'll look and keep looking until I see what Jesus sees when he looks inside the eyes of me.

Journey to the Well takes an otherwise short scripture and explores the role of Jesus in the lives of everyday women. McKenzie delves into our lives and roles as women and shows how we can experience a closer relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her style of writing is engaging and inviting and kept me savoring with anticipation of each new chapter. A must read for all women, especially those needing affirmation of the importance of their relationship with the Most High.

5 out of 5 stars A Book That Challenges Readers To Action And Prayer.......2006-11-17

The English language version of WE DRINK FROM OUR OWN WELLS is now over twenty years old. When it was first released, it did cause quite a bit of stir. Some read it simply because it was by Peruvian priest and theologian Gustavo Gutierrez. This was the time that Gutierrez and other Liberation Theologians were facing investigation by the Vatican. Some, like Leonardo Boff were silenced. Gutierrez' writings were not condemned on the whole, but there were questions regarding some of the particulars of his theological approach. The criticism was based on the seemingly sympathetic stance toward Marxism of some Liberation theologians. At the time Ronald Reagan was in the White House, Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of England, the Nuclear Arms race as escalating and it had been only three years since Archbishop Romero and the woman missionaries in El Salvador had been killed for being viewed as religious radicals. Today theologians like Gutierrez are seen as invigorating theology and reminding us of the Gospel's call to serve the poor, birth not that radical, but in the 1980's, this was controversial and many read it for the controversy alone. Others read it out of admiration for Gutierrez' earlier work A THEOLOGY OF LIBERATION. My guess is that whatever the reason, this book, like so many powerful works of faith, touched and hopefully changed the reader.

It seems that Gutierrez' purpose for writing this work is twofold. First, it is a defense of his principals of Liberation theology. Critics claimed Gutierrez' writings were Communism with a Christian slant. Gutierrez never refuted the charge of having Communistic leanings which would have taken away from what he was trying to accomplish. Instead he kept defending the rights of the poor and the call of Christ to serve the most vulnerable and stayed away from a debate which would have just been political. The result is this book. WE DRINK FROM OUR OWN WELLS presents a spiritual basis for Liberation Theology demonstrating that his beliefs are not based on anything other than the message of Jesus Christ. Gutierrez does what few theologians do, or at least do well. He not only presents the theology, he also presents the practical spiritual basis too.

While the book may be an attempt to connect the theories of Liberation Theology and spiritual practice, most readers of WE DRINK FROM OUR OWN WELLS probably discovered what makes the book so powerful. In an age when there is almost a disconnect between a person's spiritual life and all other aspects of life, Gutierrez reminds us that not only that we cannot hear the words of scripture and not be concerned for the poor and oppressed, but that our care and concern for others ought to lead us to prayer and God and our prayer ought to lead u to concern for others. He also reminds us of the importance of a communal aspect of the faith, highlighting for Catholics the centrality of the Eucharist. Gutierrez offers a lived rather than theoretical spirituality that can bring about change. It's also a challenging book for most Western readers and an empowering book for the poor and oppressed. Readers cannot help but see that the poor and marginalized have far more to offer us as far as knowing God is concerned than those of us who may be privileged have to offer them.

5 out of 5 stars Why the controversy?.......2003-11-23

Gutierrez has written about "liberation theology" in layman's language. Not only is the book informative, it is a guide to personal spirituality.

After completing the book, I find it difficult to understand why "liberation theology" has been such a controversial topic within the political and church establishments for the past 30 years. Why had a US government study claimed "liberation theology" a greater threat to Latin America than communism? And why had the authorities in Rome silenced both Gutierrez and Boff for their positions on liberation theology?

We Drink from Our Own Wells is formated into three sections. The first section contains two chapters that define "new" spirituality as practiced among the poor in Latin America.

The second section is comprised of three chapters that focus on scripture; particularly the gospels of the evangelists and the epistles of Paul. Much attention is given to the social gospel of Christ. The concepts of flesh, spirit, and body are extensively discussed, as are the terms "discipleship" and "community".

The five chapters in the final section are summarized in Henri Nouwen's superbly written Forward: "...filled with deeply moving texts written by Christian men and women who have experienced persecution and suffering but have been witnesses to the living and hope-giving God in the midst of their sufferings."

The 202 pages include 33 pages of notes, 4 pages of scripture references (over 200 entries), a 15 page Forward written by Henri Nouwen, and a 5 page Preface by Gutierrez for the 20th Anniversay Edition.

5 out of 5 stars It changes your view of Spirtuality.......1998-06-01

This book applies to everybody who is looking to stregthen his or her spirtuality. It looks at the Latin American version of Christianity which is a good reminder that there are more types of spirtualities than the American ones. It a good read, well written and it draws well on the scripture.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate, Current, and Useful.......2002-08-09

Beating Depression is that rare book that is both easily readable by anyone with interest in this area, and highly accurate from a clinical and research standpoint. It skillfully blends hope, advocacy, practical information, self-help techniques and resource lists into a succinct text. The information and recommendations it contains are based on solid research evidence and current best practices. It stands out as a valuable addition to the books that clinicians can confidently recommend to patients and their families. It is also a book that clinicians with responsibilities for setting policy in health systems can use to help educate a broad range of stakeholders about important aspects of depressive illness.

5 out of 5 stars Depression experts provide easy to read and use book!.......2002-07-17

I have read this clear, practical book from cover to cover. Having been a physician for 22 years, and a psychiatrist for most of that, I have seen a multitude of books, both expert and popular, on mental health.
"Beating Depression" is in a class by itself.
First, the writers have a collective wealth of clinical, academic and research experience that informs their work. Content is current and authoritative. Second, "Beating Depression" is very clear and easy to read. It is well-organized and practical, --and obviously designed to help people and their families get the care they need for depression. I use it, and highly recommend it to friends, colleagues, and patients.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-07-09

Dr Jackson-Triche has written one of the best consumer-oriented guidebooks on depression. In plain, approachable writing the usually difficult-to-understand clinical definitions of depression are made clear and understandable to a lay person without "dumbing down."

Those who suffer from depression are treated with respect and caring, and are truly given hope along with solid and trustworthy information.

Having spent decades trying to understand and accept my own depression without shame and hopelessness, this book has helped me become proactive in my treatment. The concepts unpacked in this book are now as familiar to me as they are to my doctors and therapists, and I can ask for help in an empowered way. This is the most hopeful news I can pass on to anyone who has suffered from depression.

Highly recommended!

Book Description

Do beer yeast rustlers really exist? Who patented the Beer Goddess? How can you tell a Beer Geek from a Beer Nazi? Where exactly is Beervana? Does Big Beer hate Little Beer?

Ken Wells, a novelist, Pulitzer Prize finalist, and longtime Wall Street Journal writer, answers these questions and more by bringing a keen eye and prodigious reportage to the people and passions that have propelled beer into America's favorite alcoholic beverage and the beer industry into a $75 billion commercial juggernaut, not to mention a potent force in American culture.

Travels with Barley is a lively, literate tour through the precincts of the beer makers, sellers, drinkers, and thinkers who collectively drive the mighty River of Beer onward. The heart of the book is a journey along the Mississippi River, from Minnesota to Louisiana, in a quixotic search for the Perfect Beer Joint -- a journey that turns out to be the perfect pretext for viewing America through the prism of a beer glass. Along the river, you'll visit the beer bar once owned by the brewer Al Capone, glide by The World's Largest Six Pack, and check into Elvis Presley's Heartbreak Hotel to plumb the surprisingly controversial question of whether Elvis actually drank beer. But the trip also includes numerous detours up quirky tributaries, among them: a visit to an Extreme Beer maker in Delaware with ambitions to make 50-proof brew, a look at the murky world of beer yeast rustlers in California, and a journey to the portals of ultimate beer power at the Anheuser-Busch plant in St. Louis, where making the grade as a Clydesdale draft horse is harder than you might imagine. Entertaining, enlightening, and written with Wells's trademark verve, Travels with Barley is a perfect gift -- not just for America's 84 million beer enthusiasts, but for all discerning readers of flavorful nonfiction.

5 out of 5 stars Tasty!.......2006-01-23

Wells is the first person to attempt this kind of beer book and I think he succeeds wonderfully. Neophites can learn a lot about beer and the craft brew movement (not to mention a nicely delivered short history of beer in the world and America) and the beer savvy will like his chapters on Extreme Beer, yeast rustlers and a home brewing contest. Meanwhile, if you like travelogue there's lot of tasty stuff in there. The first chapter on a "beer spill" at a legendary Florida beach bar is funny and informative and Wells' trip down the Mississippi River in search of the perfect beer joint is a nice ride. Perusing the reviewer before me who declared the book "awful" I can't help but think: it's not that Wells can't write. It's that some reviewers can't read!

2 out of 5 stars The Cheap American Pale Lager of Beer Books.......2005-12-25

Simply awful. Though author Ken Wells may not have succeeded in finding "the perfect beer joint" (as the "premise" of this book seems to have been), he certainly succeeded in writing an awful book about a delightful subject.

Travels with Barley is uninspired, aimless, uninteresting, and and pointless. I gave the book a very generous 2 stars only because I found the chapter on "yeast rustling" very interesting -- it would have made a very good newpaper feature article, as very few of the chapters in the books might have. This collection of mediocre newspaper articles is mashed up into one barely readable book.

If you know little to absolutely nothing about beer but would like to learn a little or buy a nice gift for a beer lover, then DO NOT buy Travels with Barley (stick with one of Michael Jackson's books [not the King of P--, the Beer Writer]).

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining look at Beer Culture.......2005-12-09

Even though it was stated that a goal of this book was to find a perfect beer joint, the true essence of this book (as the TITLE depicts) is to show Beer Culture in America.
It is an entertaining read spotted with humor. I don't think Ken demonizes the American Lager Style and, in fact, drinks his share of those industrial beers along his journey. But he does prove that there's far more being brewed in the US than tasteless yellow beer.
This book is great for anyone who enjoys beer, whether you're a beer geek, brewer, beer judge, or just occasional sipper.

5 out of 5 stars You Can Kick Back With This Book..........2005-08-19

This is not a perfect effort but Wells has written a damned fine book that I think will go down as a beer classic. First of all, he's obviously a good reporter and an honest broker and he does a remarkable job of synthesizng beer's place in both contemporary and historical America. Second, contrary to a statement or two by some reviewers below, Wells is NOT a beer snob and in fact takes pains to explain why Bud got to be so popular and lager came to rule the beer world; he does both without being dismissive of lager or lager drinkers. As a beer geek myself I probably would have liked to have seen a little less travel writing and a little more attention paid to craft beer. But his chapters on yeast and yeast smuggling, home brew competitions and what he calls Extreme Beer are excellent and, by the way, first-class magazine journalism.

2 out of 5 stars Beer Snobs: This Book Is For You!.......2005-07-05

Although this book is occasionally informative and interesting, Ken Wells devotes way too way much ink expressing contempt for anyone who dares to like American lagers. There is more than enough room in the beer world for lager fans and Hopheads to coexist.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book About Spinal Cord Injury.......2001-02-22

We really like this book! The author, Margie Williams, suffered a severe spinal cord injury at the age of 53, just when she was making plans for the rest of her life. She presents a close-up view of what life is like during and after such an incident, including her experience with institutional medicine and insurance companies (for better and for worse), and her determined -- and ultimately successful -- effort to rehabilitate herself and reconstruct her life. Journey To Well is well-written, funny in some parts and heart-rending in others, but completely absorbing throughout. The comprehensive Resource Guide included in the Appendix is itself well worth the price of the book for those dealing with spinal cord injuries as patients or as caregivers.

Everyone's experience with spinal cord injury is different, and this is indeed a subjective view. But the manner in which Margie Williams responded to and grew from her experiences has applications for everyone. We would therefore enthusiastically recommend Journey To Well not only to those who have experienced spinal cord injury, but also to those who have not. The world of those who must live the rest of their lives on wheels is quite different than the "two-legged" world. The more we understand the similarities as well as the differences between the two, the better we will be as individuals and as a caring society.

4 out of 5 stars A Realistic Account.......2000-11-28

I am an Occupational Therapist who works with persons with spinal cord injuries. I found this book to be very helpful in describing what it's like to have a SCI from the victim's point of view. Her story doesn't put on a glossy finish, and that's good, because it isn't a fun experience. I have given it to students to read to gain a better perspective on the impact of a SCI on an individual and the family. I would recommend this book if you want to read an account of one person's struggle through hospitalization, rehab and life at home.

2 out of 5 stars Journey to Well.......2000-10-23

Reviewer: robert dorroh (see more about me) from Sonora, CA United States The reader will be distracted by poor writing that includes awkward sentences, punctuation, rash of italics and exclamation points, and an overdose of sentimentality. Williams is a good soul who needs a better editor. Still, she deserves two stars for sincerity and a good effort.

      Book Description

Drawing on observations from the streets and university classrooms and from personal interviews with lawyers, journalists, politicians, and military personnel, this riveting investigation examines the most compelling aspects of Pakistan's culture and history. Written by an American journalist living in Pakistan, the issues and struggles of Pakistan and its people as the United States's war on terror unfolds are addressed. This powerful report offers vivid descriptions of life in Lahore and humanizes the nation's struggles by delving into every dimension of the Pakistani experience, including domestic politics; ethnic, regional, and sectarian fault lines; anti-Western and anti-Indian sentiments; and the border issues between Kashmir and Afghanistan. An engaging work, the findings connect this volatile nation to its precarious place in the international realm.

An excellent account of the journey of a journalist in Pakistan. Not only will you be learning a lot of how life is in Pakistan for people from all walks of life but also you will have an enjoyable time reading the book. Very intriguing and thought provoking. A book well worth reading!!

4 out of 5 stars In the dust of Paskistan.......2005-02-16

At first, "A human journey in a dangerous time" sounded a rather dull title but ultimately it was what I was going to learn about: the human journey of a journalist that metamorphosed into a writer.

It all started differently. "For me, journalism had started out as the next best thing to Writing. As teenager, I wanted to be William Faulkner" wrote Casey and most of the first part of the book is about Ethan's aspiration: a literary journey through Pakistan and Kashmir seen through the eyes of his muse, V.S. Naipaul. Casey visits Pakistan with An Area of Darkness as guidebook and Naipaul's memories and characters for tour guide.

It is a dry journey in search for the place visited by Naipaul - the Dal Lake, the Hotel Leeward and the people who Naipaul's met. Then, Ethan seems remote from what is going on around him, his main concern is "... to create [his] own virtual versions of [Naipaul] settings". In this first journey, he will meet the notable of the time, Amir Khan commander of a pro-Pakistan militant group, Abdul Qayum Khan, prime minister of Azad Kashmir and as a journalist will dutifully visit a refugee camp and dutifully but wryly take notes.

There is little here for those eager to discover Pakistan, its society, people, customs and little is provided that would help understanding the origin and evolution of the Kashmir conflict. But it would be unfair to say that Casey was completely unaware of what was happening around him. In that that he is a well travelled person and could relate to his American origin and past, and "As an American, [he] appreciated the pathos of a country trying, and usually failing, to live up to an ideal".

Casey shows a rare understanding not sahred with many travel writers who are "only passing through". "I spent a lot of time on the ground in Kashmir with Kashmiris, then later stepped back and looked at it again from afar". Often they consider that after a few weeks in a foreign country, they know everything that needs or is worth knowing about it and believe to have the expertise to write and lecture about it. Fortunately Casey does not fall for it because he knows that story telling "that are plausible are built not from guesses but from facts, painstakingly gleaned one by one"

At the end of this first journey to Pakistan, Ethan "would move [...] and life and death would go on in Kashmir as before. This was their life [...] I had no right to claim Kashmir [...]. I was not suffering and dying [...]. On the contrary I was literally making money from other people's suffering."

The would-be Pulitzer journo goes back to wire editing. A few years later, enters the writers

Invited by Isa Daudpota, oddly characterised as a Pakistani intellectual, Ethan will teach International Journalism at a new university launched by the Beaconhouse School system. Here he will meet some of the Pakistan "elite. His mission is unclear to him, but this time, Naipaul would not be part of it.

This time Ethan is re-discovering Pakistan for himself through tennis - played with a retired army major and film producer, a game of cricket - literally surrounded by village boys and a ride on a motorbike shared with 2 other people. He will notice the small things he didn't see during his first journey, drinking a glass of fresh lime with pepper or "A coke, in a glass bottle with a straw, as cokes are always drunk in the subcontinent".

Ethan will meet the real people of Pakistan, his students, their wealthy family but also the less well-endowed family running his guest house, the rich and poor, the powerful and the pariah such as Christian Pakistani essential part of the society as street cleaners. Through his numerous encounters he will expose the contradiction of a society with a politically exacerbated cultural protectionism. For example if there is only one Indian movie a day, it is because "they only spread sex, they have no morality", no matter that broadcaster screen Friends and the Fear Factor. Likewise, there is no contradiction in showing girls in bathing suits said Zarina Sadek from Beaconhouse, "They are not Pakistani so it's all right". A distinction is made between the barbarians and the civilised, but through the looking glass, the barbarians are the American girls fighting in bikinis for money.

During his journey through Pakistan and Kashmir, Ethan experiences how foreigners can be a source of admiration but can also crystallise all the hatred our western world generate. Ethan had sometimes to pretend that he is English and hide is American legacy in a country where many see Bush as a new Hitler.

It is in this second part that the writer really shows up, that the characters come to life, the atmosphere breathes out of the pages and that the human journey through troubled times is born into reality. He is here to find something different, probably prompted by his reading of Naipaul, but he quickly concluded that Islam is not different from Christianity or Indian secularism or the American way of life.

"Through the looking glass" chapter contains some of the best pages where Ethan allows himself to talk about his feeling. Ethan's recollection of his teaching provides some of the funniest parts of the book: the discussion following the screening of "The quiet American" to his student exposes, that being part of the "elite" does not extend to forcibly include the intellectual elite. Nothing new here, it is neither a specificity of Pakistan or of a Muslim country.

Ultimately, it is a book for two different public. For those who know about Pakistan or lived or have lived in a Muslim country it will conjure memories. For the others it will lift a veil that needs to be open individually and may tempt them to go there because there nothing better than the sniff of the ground.
