Book Description
Hit the gym for a workout--but sit for hours at your computer. Supersize your value meals--but downsize your waistline. Today's media-saturated teenagers are bombarded with mixed messages that distort their self-image and lead many to overeat and others to starve themselves. When "I feel fat" becomes a teen's common refrain, how can worried parents respond constructively? With "I'm, Like, SO Fat!" Dr. Dianne Neumark-Sztainer shows parents how to strike the difficult balance between bolstering self-esteem and offering constructive advice. Drawing on her landmark study, Project EAT (Eating Among Teens), and her experience as a mother of four, Neumark-Sztainer offers a wealth of science-based, practical ideas for instilling healthy eating and exercise habits, educating teens about nutrition and portion size, and talking about body image. Here is a rock-solid foundation that parents everywhere can build on to help their teens stay fit, eat well, and feel good about their looks in a world where too-perfect bodies are used to sell everything from cosmetic surgery to fast food.

Very informative.......2002-10-29
This book is really great! I like it because it addresses my questions as a Vegetarian, but isnt strictly so. It's for everyone. Most of the books out there dont go so far as to tell you about nutrition, and mainly give recipies and are mostly for meat eating diets. My son hates vegetables, and is a picky eater and I found that this book helped me with those issues instead of glossing over it and then providing recipies with veggies and things he wouldnt like anyway. The recipies are really good, and easy to prepare. Healthy and tasty, to boot.
I reccomend this book to anyone, no matter your diet. Its easy to read and very informative. If you have a baby, I would reccomend 'Super Baby Food' by Ruth Yaron to go with this.
These to books are awesome if you want your children and yourself to eat health consiously.
Healthy Eating For Life for Children.......2002-02-09
As a parent, I had no idea where to start in terms of my children's nutrition and or researching dietary guidelines. This book is a great start. It also covers information on pregnancy, child athletes, and eating disorders. This is a must, for any parent.

But where can a mother turn for advice on how to proactively parent a daughter struggling with--or soon to confront--these insecurities?
You can make a difference.
Whether your daughter is 8 or 16, Mom, I Feel Fat! will help you understand her, the body image issues she will face--from self-esteem to eating disorders--and yourself. INCLUDES PRACTICAL EXERCISES AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING QUESTIONS
FOR MOM ALONE--AND FOR MOTHER AND DAUGHTER TOGETHER.

Not quite what I was hoping for...........2007-08-11
While the information in the book is decent enough, I had somehow missed that it has a fairly strong bibilical base. I have since gotten the book, You Have to Say I'm Pretty, You're My Mother, and it's a better fit for what I am looking for. I am planning to send this one onto my sister, whose beliefs are more inline with the christian principles in the book.
Too much religion........2002-09-01
This otherwise promising book relied too heavily on God and religion for the lay reader.
wonderful book on mother-daughter relationships.......2002-06-27
"Mom I Feel Fat" is a well-written and thoughtful book to help mothers help their daughters improve their self-images. The author is a licensed professional counselor and she focuses on the entire mother daughter relationship. She asks thoughtful and provoking questions and provides stimulating exercises for the reader.
The author believes a mother has to understand her own emotions and behaviors in order to connect with and help her daughter understand hers, so this book is about the transformation of the mother as well as the daughter, which I agree is very necessary.
I would have given this book five stars were it not for the cover (I wish there were a 4 1/2 star rating, which is what I would like to give it.) The cover shows a model-perfect mother daughter pair, awash in flattering lighting. The real mother daughter pair, not so model-perfect are in a tiny picture on the back.

In American Academy of Pediatrics Guide to Your Child's Nutrition, nutritionist William H. Dietz and pediatrician Loraine Stern have written an authoritative, comprehensive resource for parents concerned about their children's nutrition. The book is subtitled Making Peace at the Table and Building Healthy Eating Habits for Life, and it provides useful tips for concerned parents on how to feed their children well without turning into the food police. Subjects covered include instructions for breast and bottle feeding, introducing semi-solids and solids, toddler meals and resistance, school lunches, adolescent/parent food struggles, eating disorders, the relationship between smoking and weight distribution, and, of course, the recommended Food Guide Pyramid. The chapter on eating and food problems, titled "Spitting Up, Gagging, Vomiting, Diarrhea, and Constipation," may not make for great reading on a sensitive stomach, yet it provides a great resource for parents with an ailing child. Another chapter, titled "What Do I Do About Outside Influences?" discusses parental influence, peer pressure, television, and how they may affect your child's relationship with food. Additional subjects include food safety, alternative diets, and allergies. --Ericka Lutz

Just ok.......2006-03-20
I was excited about this book, but I have found that not much of it is relevant for the age of my little one (4 years old). They list a lot of good information for babies and a lot of good information for older kids, but the information for toddlers and preschoolers was lacking, in my opinion.

Good Reference.......2000-01-11
I bought this book to help me figure out how to make sure my infant was receiving all the nutrients necessary and also to help with the transition from just formula to eating regular meals. The book didn't help with information on the transition, but I still think the nutrition information is great.
It has good tips on how to keep feeding time from becoming a battle and good tips on how to start your children out on the right track to healthy eating.
The information on what NOT to feed your infant is also extreemly important and could prevent many choking incidents!

Finally! A wholistic approach to helping kids.......2005-06-03
I was thinking about sending my daughter to one of those weight camps and now I am not going to do it. Instead, we are trying to do the things Dr. Linda suggests. So far, it's working. My son doesn't like the limit on video games but I now realize, I'm in charge and doing what's best for him. This book got me thinking about lifestyle changes, not just weight.
The wholistic approach makes more sense than faddish diets.

Better than I had expected!.......2004-05-22
This book was picked up on a whim as a graduation gift and I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of insight this book relays while not being preach-y. The book is written by a high school teacher and parent who undertands the pressures young adults have encountered when going away to college. When you read this book you truly get the feeling that he wants to help the reader make good choices. Morality issues are addressed in text and cartoon and the points are made without turning off the reader. Of course there are plenty of practical issues addressed such as "What should I bring to college?" to make it very worthwhile just for that reassurance. As a bonus the student also gets encouragement to make good decisions and to avoid the bad ones. Where was this book 20+ years ago when I went away to college?
