Book Description
This is a totally revised Edition of Kundalini Tantra brought out by Yoga Publications Trust which has been formed as a separate entity exclusively for Publishing the Books brought out by Bihar School Of Yoga.
Kundalini Yoga is a part of the tantric tradition. Even though you may have already been introduced to yoga, it is necessary to know something about tantra also. Since ancient times, the wise have realised that mind can be expanded and that experiences do not necessarily depend on the object. This means that if somebody is playing music, I can hear it, and if somebody has painted a picture, I can see it, but I can also see if there is no picture, and I can also hear if there is no music. This is also a quality of man's personality which has been ignored in the last 150 to 200 years. This Book presents a systematic and pragmatic approach to the awakening of kudalini, which arouses greater intelligence from it's sleep and you can give birth to a new range of creativity.

Impressive.......2007-08-15
Have you practiced some years of Hatha and Raja Yoga and you feel you need something more?
In that case this is your book: A systematic and detailed program for chakra and sushumna awakening. I'm just finishing the first part, the Chakra Sadhana Course, and it really works!
No need of a guru having this book.

Superb!.......2007-05-14
Expert, specific, precise instruction and guidance from a Paramyogi and Guru. You couldn't find better if you visited an Indian Ashram or Himalayan Hermitage!
While Paramahansa Yogananda's "SELF REALIZATION FELLOWSHIP" charges thousand$ for initiation and instruction, this book and "A Systematic Course in the Ancient Tantric Techniques of Yoga and Kriya" will take you step-by-step through all prepratory stages AND ALL ACTUAL PRACTICES OF THE ENTIRE SERIES OF KRIYAS for a paltry one-time fee. Forget the other reviews on here which warn of "seeking a qualified teacher" before attempting Kriya Yoga! You can't get any more qualified than the author of these two books AND you can't get better step-by-step, seriously detailed explanations for reaching Kriya mastery than right here.
The West is sorely lacking in terms of instruction/advice/explanations on Yoga. To most people, Yoga is doing postures and some breathing down at the YMCA/YWCA or Heath Spa, which is laughable in light of information found in ALL publications for YOGA PUBLICATIONS TRUST, Mungar, Bihar, India. Look in at their website - yogavision. net
Excellent for those who're already prepared.......2006-12-21
I've owned this book for several years. I started out with "A Systematic Course in the Ancient Tantric Techniques of Yoga and Kriya", by the same author. This book is meant as a companion volume to A Systematic Course to go more in depth and explain technical details that couldn't find the space in the 1000 paged coursebook. It includes all the kriyas in their entirety with the same verbiage given in A Systematic Course. The only difference is that Kundalini Trantra presupposes the reader that's intending to do the practice has already had several years of rigorous hatha yoga and meditation practice. In fact, preceeding the exposition on the kriyas is a stern warning that those who haven't had such a lifestyle for about that much time should avert from kriya yoga until they have.
A Systematic Course, by the same author, gives an excellent 3 years worth of systematically progressive yogic techniques and lays them out in a perfect way for daily practice. I followed it for 1.5 years before integrating the practice of kriya yoga with my daily sadhana, as laid out at the end of each section. I'm intensely grateful that I closely adhered to their guidelines. Had I not had a series of smaller "awakenings", I might wonder what the hell was happening to me sometimes. All for the persuit of God.
Someone advised elsewhere here that practicing kundalini tantra (which includes kriya yoga) without a qualified teacher could be dangerous. I would have to firstly raise the question of what constitutes a "qualified" teacher? Secondly, what kind of risk would people be willing to take from these practices that might be so dangerous? I think the only qualified teacher available to us in the west is our own self-practice and our own experiences, guided by the budding intuition that develops therefrom. As for the risky business of meditation - Anytime I leave my house or drive my car, I'm putting my life in great potential peril. But I do so because I've minimized my risk from many years of practice and practical experience gleamed from it, and because the rewards far outweighs the risk.
My ultimate recommendation: A great book for those who: are determined to gain self-enlightenment from kriya yoga and have had the hatha/concentration training; hatha yogis who want to move beyond the body; and those who simply are intensely curious about kriya yoga and its technical details.
Excellent, accurate, easy to understand reference for serious students.......2006-12-12
I am a personal growth coach who has been studying world religions for over two decades. I have a graduate education in integral psychology. This field studies psychology within the broader context of the world's wisdom traditions. I own over 800-900 books on philosophy and world religion and this one is special for a variety of reasons. Three of the most important are that it is easy to read, it comes from an authentic lineage and it includes quite a bit of in-depth information.
Unlike many books on Tantra or Kundalini written for Western audiences, this book has real substance and does a good job of explaining the philosophical foundation of this practice without adding a lot of unnecessary detail. It strikes a very nice balance between a traditional approach and one that takes into account the needs of Western students.
While I don't agree with every point in the book or take it as unquestioned truth, it certainly contributed to my understanding of this vast and complex topic. It also provided me with a lot of food for thought, good analogies for difficult concepts and useful practices.
This is real Tantra and geared toward serious practioners. However, it is useful for anyone looking for reliable information without buying ten different books and getting bogged down in a lot of detail and contradictory information from questionable sources. It presents Tantra from the Hindu point of view. If you are interested in the Buddhist perspective, then I highly recommend Lama Yeshe's "Introduction to Tantra."
I think it is very important to note that practicing Kundalini Tantra without a qualified teacher could be dangerous. At the least, you can have a minor spiritual crisis or some very uncomfortable psychological or emotional problems come up unexpectedly. In short, this is an area of study to approach with respect and the best tour guide you can find.

Book Description
The first complete and fully illustrated guide to Kundalini available!
Kundalini comes from the Indian word kundal, which means "lock of hair from the beloved." The uncoiling of this "hair" is the awakening of the kundalini, the creative potential that already exists in every human. The yoga in this book is a sampling of the vast wealth called Kundalini Yoga. Here you learn about the branch of yoga based on the teachings of Yogi Bhajan, Ph.D., who brought Kundalini Yoga from India to the West in 1969. Master yoga teacher and author Shakta Kaur Khalsa demonstrates how Kundalini Yoga works for everyday life and every person. You are not required to be in perfect physical shape or share any particular belief system. Kundalini Yoga works for you if you can breathe and move your body! In this type of yoga, the most important thing is experience. Your experience goes right to your heart, your core. These ancient teachings are designed to give you a hands-on approach to experiencing your deepest emotions and highest consciousness. By approaching Kundalini Yoga with openness and respect, and by following the steps included in this book, you can change and enrich your life.
Customer Reviews:
A great book that can really help people.......2007-03-22
I liked the section on healing foods and drinks. What we ingest into our body can make our practice more effective so we can get into a state of mindfulness.
The meditation chapter was also quite good. Shows you how to meditate with effective practice. The pictures in the book are thoroughly demonstrative. They are easy to follow and help anyone who is seeking more of a peaceful life.
Another interesting part of the book was the description of the "The Ten Bodies." Each of these bodies can contribute to a calm and peaceful mind.
Kundalini yoga is great because it focuses on balance and mindfulness. The art work in this book is really pretty. The colors were well-sought out.
This book also talks about the 8 Chakras. REALLY powerful information.

Kundalini yoga book.......2007-03-09
This book was a requirement for my massage training. I really like this book and and use it regularly. I have had it for over 3 years.
excellent introduction to kundalini yoga.......2006-06-13
I was very satisfied with this book. I own a lot of different introductory books about hatha yoga, and this is definitely one of the best. in addition to the exercies, it contains excellent explanations of the underlying concepts and fondational techniques, it doesn't just contain a bunch of poses or a few sets, but gives you a wide variety of exercise sets and meditations a long with descriptions of the benefits and purpose of each one. the book provides a great deal of flexibility and room for experimentation, which is extremely rare in a "beginner's text." the photographs and instructions are clear and of high quality, and the book provides a good introduction to the practices and lifetsyle of Yogi Bhajan's devotees.
some points of clarification may be warranted from the reviews of the other readers. first of all, "kundalin yoga" as referred to her is the name given by Yogi Bhajan to the style of yoga he developed. it is not the same as the various forms of yogi developed within hinduism expressly oriented around the development of divinity through the cultivation of kundalini. this form of "kundalini yoga" is modern, and bears a much stronger resemblance to hatha yoga than it does hnidu kundalini yogis, which are primarily meditative. like hatha yoga, as taught by Swami Sivananda and the Ashtanga lineage and others, Kundalini Yoga represents a fully developed spiritual system and set of lifestyles practices. however, unlike other popular forms of hatha yoga, kundalini yoga is not grounded in Hindusm. also, whereas other types of yoga are some times taught with an emphasis placed on the exercise aspects, with the spiritual and lifestyle aspects deemphasized, Kundalini Yoga is always taught as a complete system.
a great deal of controversy surrounds Kundalini Yoga, 3HO and Yogi Bhajan. as one other reviwer wrote, a number of scandals have occured within the community over the last thirty years, and these are chronicled on Rick Ross's website. however, a self-proclaimed deprogrammer and cult investogator, Rick Ross himself is a controversial figure and has been investigated oand sued on a number of occasions. none of the actions following from Yogi Bhajan's alleged misconduct ever resulted in a conviction.
finally, Yogi Bhajan's credentials as a yogi teacher have been called into question, as has his claim to be the spiritual representative of the Sikhs in the Western hemisphere. these allegations are more or less true. Yogi Bhajan's lineage is completely unknown and many of his teachings violate the basic tennants of Sikhism. to my knowledge, Sikhs do not practice hatha yoga, and many of the beliefs and techniques in Yogi Bhajan's system were clearly borrowed from Hinduism.
all that said, I and many people I know have practiced Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Yoga for years and have found it to be healthy and emotionally and spiritually uplifting. on that grounds, I recommend this book to anyone interested in yoga, spirituality and mind-body exercise. with regard to the other issues, I suggest you draw your own conclusions about 3HO and Yogi Bhajan, without being overly swayed either by his devotees or his critics.
The best book on kundalini yoga that I have come across. .......2006-03-09
I am responding to a review by chiara adina cerweny "chiaradina" (wellington, NZ), who has posted the exact same review for three different books on kundalini yoga. Obviously, this individual has a personal problem with kundalini yoga, calling it a cult and a money producing machine. I have practiced kundalini yoga for eleven years and as far as I can tell, it is not a cult. My yoga instructor has never encouraged me to join anything or buy anything. For me it is an enjoyable way to exercise, unwind, and rejuvenate.
As for the book by Shakta Kaur Khalsa, I have used it as a reference for four years now. It is well written and beautifully illustrated. The book is not only a manual, but explains the background and philosophy of kundalini yoga as well. Simply put, it is the best book on kundalini yoga that I have come across.
Kundalini Yoga.......2005-03-10
I received this book as a present from a very dear friend and have it for 6 months now; The book is great, easy to follow, photos are of a good quality;
I highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to start practicing yoga

Book Description
From internationally renowned yoga teacher Gurmukh comes a book on pregnancy unlike any other. Bountiful, Beautiful, Blissful is a treasury of wisdom, information, and inspiration for pregnancy and motherhood based on the spiritual and physical practices of Kundalini yoga, which Gurmukh has taught for the last thirty years. With illustrated, step-by-step instructions, she teaches time-tested techniques, meditations, and exercises that will help you physically, mentally, and spiritually. In the timeless way that women have passed down wisdom surrounding birth and child rearing to one another for centuries, Gurmukh weaves folk stories and contemporary testimonials into a program designed to help you get profound results in the shortest possible time. The sections in this book cover each trimester of pregnancy as well as delivery and life with the baby. In her wise, gentle, and comforting voice, Gurmukh suggests meditations, exercises, and yoga positions to respond to the various needs of expectant and new mothers as you undergo dramatic body changes. Gurmukh also helps you explore and, when necessary, heal your own history and unconscious attitudes about pregnancy, birth, and parenting. In Bountiful, Beautiful, Blissful, Gurmukh gives you all the tools you need to have a healthy and happy pregnancy while increasing your connection to your partner and building compassion and prosperity. The ancient practices of yoga can lead you back to your own power as a woman, capable of more than you ever dreamed. All you need is a belief in the possibility of change and a commitment of as little as three minutes a day. Gurmukh has helped thousands of women and their families find fulfillment through the healing movements and meditations of Kundalini yoga---and she can help you, too!
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-09-01
A big companion during and after my pregnancy. A beautiful voice. Excellent advices and simple meditations. A dinamic vision of life. I strongly recommend. A perfect gift.
A wonderful guide for expectant mothers.......2007-02-21
I can only say that I wish I had this book when I was having my children - Gurmukh relates her own personal experience in a way that a lot of women in my age group can identify with. Through the beauty of yoga and meditation, she has found a lovely way to hand the power of your own pregnancy and decisions that need to be made back to the mother where it belongs. I recommend this book to all expectant moms!
I feel blissful too.......2007-01-26
After reading Spiritual Midwifery and Birthing From Within, I thought nothing would match the beauty and strength contained in those books. Imagine my surprise when I opened Gurmukh's book and found myself immediately captured by her descriptions of her feelings during her first trimester of pregnancy. I was hooked. My husband bought me the book for Christmas and I am using the exercises and Gurmukh's wise, nurturing voice to accompany me during my second pregnancy.
Wonderful Book - Loved by me and Friends.......2006-11-13
Gurmukh is amazing at bringing in a completely different angle/aspect to pregnancy and childbirth. It so helped me (43 1/2 when I had my first child) and several friends.
Serious mistakes, packed with prejudice.......2004-10-14
I bought this book after reading some very positive reviews on Amazon.com. Unfortunately there are grave misconceptions and mistakes in Gurmukh's book, which means I don't dare trust her advice. Some of the worst mistakes include:
Nourishment - Gurmukh claims there is more protein in broccoli than in meat (p 80). She suggests pregnant women should try a vegetarian or vegan diet. There is very little protein in broccoli (3,5%) whereas there is a lot in meat (15-20%). However there is plenty of proten in soy flour (37%), nuts (15-25%), beans, peas and tofu (8 - 10%). Gurmukh's claim is wrong, potentially harmful and unnecessary, since there are lots of great sources for vegetable protein, just not broccoli.
Exercise - Gurmukh says she once had a student who was a dancer on a fairly rigourous training schedule. She ended up having a C-section because her cervix would not dilate (p 151). Gurmukh thinks her abdominal muscles might have been so tight that she couldn't let go. I have studied the subject of pregnancy and exercise carefully and versions of this story are often used to scare women to take it easy during their pregnancy. Yes, there are exercising women who had to have a C-section. But this complication in childbirth is more common in women who exercise little or not at all! Abdominal muscles cannot get too tight to give birth, it is the cervix and uterus that are involved in the birth process. Exercising women who generally find it easier to relax than those who don't and recover faster after childbirth. Read James F. Clapp, "Exercising through your pregnancy" for well researched information.
Heavy Metal - Gurmukh says that heavy metal is bad for your baby p 88). This is a matter of opinion but my personal belief is that anything that makes mother feel good will make baby happy.
Men - Gurmukh thinks most men can't stand to see blood, are unsuitable as birth attendants and can only do one thing at a time. Now, let's not generalize... the men I know are intuitive, sensitive, brave and supportive. And I can only do one thing at a time!
Furthermore, Gurmukh says that religion doesn't matter but at the same time she recommens that everyone should try making an altar for the baby, celebrate the arrival of the child's soul and so on. If you like a lot of references to religion and God, this book may be right for you.
Anything good in the book? There is some wholesome advice against circumcision and planned C-sections and Gurmukh is in favour of family beds and attachment. But if these are subjects that interest you, you'll get better value for money if you buy a copy of Sears "The Baby Book". The book is not as much about yoga as about how to expect, deliver and be a mother the Gurmukh way. There is a single yogic exercise at the end of each chapter, I would have preferred suggested exercise programs with routines to follow every day.

Book Description
This is a wise and comprehensive self-help book to help people understand and integrate the life-transforming experience of Kundalini awakening. It describes seven categories of phenomena related to Kundalini, provides Eastern and Western perspectives of the experience, includes 23 case histories, and gives practical guidance for people who are in a "Kundalini process."
Customer Reviews:
good book but does not cover everything.......2007-02-17
not everyone who has a kundalini awakening does it through practicing yoga or meditiaton. sometimes the kundalini is awakened through spontaneous spiritual awakening or even alien encounters. Many people do not go through the shakes, sweating, etc.
The one book to have on Kundalini.......2004-02-22
For those experiencing or interested in the process of Kundalini awakening, this is the one book to have. Dr. Greenwell writes clearly and intelligently about the broad range of experiences that can occur when this powerful energy awakens, including case histories of a variety of gurus, saints, and everyday people, and about the yogic view of energy and the chakras. She offers useful advice on how to handle the intense psychic and physical phenomena that is a frequent by-product of active Kundalini energy, reassurance that spiritual awakening indeed exists and you aren't crazy, and the importance of allowing the awakening to unfold once it has begun.
I bought this book several years ago and continue to turn to it time and time again as questions about Kundalini arise.
Good resource but misses the mark.......2000-02-21
This book is an important addition to the literature on Kundalini mysteries and is admirable (but not exhaustive) in its research of the literature itself. However, I feel that, in drawing conclusions from the divergent information gleaned without a seeming ability to satisfactorily distinguish esoteric metaphor from Indoasian philosophy and pseudoscience from Western science and pseudoscience, the author contributes to more pseudoscience on the subject. In Chapter 5, the author presents biographical sketches of historic personages, many of whom exemplify the extremes of the Kundalini process. Interestingly, in noting Sri Yogananda, she reports, almost dejectedly, that devotees of his path in whom Kundalini processes are awakened generally do not experience adverse effects. Without delving into why this is so and exploring other Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, Sikh, and Yogic lineages that present methods for gradual catharsis of consciousness and neurology (which is what the Kundalini process essentially is), she misses the real mystery of Kundalini, the "why" of how things go awry, and the key to helping individuals who experience untoward effects. I feel that the author presents bits of information but not essential understanding or definition of the Kundalini process. It would have been better if this book was simply a straightforward compilation of anecdotes from the literature with some case studies and clinical psychological profiles thrown in rather than a piece offering so much commentary and conjecture.
tremendous resource.......1999-07-24
This is the one book to have, that explains the kundalini awakening. This is an absoulte must have book, for all those who practice yoga or meditation. It shows in detail how kundalini awakens and the symptoms that often come with it such as sweating, shaking, visions, changes in breathing and heart beat patterns and so forth. Many people who meditate long enough have experienced these and other symptoms and dont know what is going on. What is going on is that they have awakened kundalini and that this energy is working to clear out negative energy and transforming them to a higher and better state of being. The results of meditation can be terrifying if one is not informed of what is going on. This book does a superb job in explaining what is happening. Simply a great book.

Relaxation is key to all life's problems.......2006-11-13
Why five stars? Simple. This book is simple. It is straight foward, easy to use, and safe. Why, after all that has been said, do I claim this book is safe? There is only one chapter on kundalini activation, and it is only in an indirect fashion, that activation occurs. The book focusses on sitting and relaxation techniques. The emphasis is on attentive awareness, cultivated to the point of concentration. There are no techniques in the entire book which would produce any explosive psychic reactions. Taking the alarmist position can be remedied with a perview of antero alli's angel tech, the article on kundalini crackups is particularly enlightening. The main exercise involving the kundalini is the solar plexus charging technique, by which the practitioner concentrates on an internally generated heat until absorbsion of the bodymind process saturates awareness with heat. This experience of laya is an indirect experience of the kundalini energy, centered in the manipura chakra, the center of balance and equilibrium. I suggest starting with chapter one, use the chakra meditation from magical tattwas, or the suhum gayatri from death and dying. Do it fourteen days before moving on. You don't need them to achieve progress however, remember the technique is the goal. Achieving relaxation and self-mastery are in fact noble goals we should all hope to attain in our lifetime, I believe.
In response to previous reviewers.......2006-01-01
Some previous reviewers such as "rain cloud" has declared himself god and has declared other people's pains and feelings unimportant. What he and others like him (and there are far too many of them) fails to realize is that just as a drug might give no side effects to one person, it may give horrifying side effects to another. This is the way kundalini works. Just because you happen to be part of the majority that do not feel any side effects from kundalini, it would ignorant, careless, unfeeling, self centered, self absorptive, and stupid of you to think that other people won't experience it either. In addition, it would be selfish, irresponsible, unaccountable, and even criminal of you to preach kundalini as if there were no dangers or precautions to beware of. You are playing with fire and playing with fate itself. You are playing with other people's lives and potentially destroying lives.
There may or may not be an ultimate good effect to kundalini, but is it worth the hell it can give to some people? Is this a deal with the devil?
Approach kundalini with caution. If you feel sideffects from a kundalini procedure then stop before you hurt yourself real bad. Another big problem with kundalini is that you don't know if you went too far until it is too late. The side effects sometimes takes up to 24 hours to "kick in" after a kundalini session, so if anything, the initial session should be very brief and very light - not the overloaded stuff advertised by this book.
Finally, if the Bible's book of genesis warns of the "serpent" (a.k.a. kundalini ) who decieves you with occult powers in exchange for your own alienation from god, how can you trust it? Gopi Krishna, a well known sufferer of kundalini hell, concluded in his books that there was no God, only a mindless energy that permeates all. This shows that kundalini has alienated him from God to a far higher degree than adam and eve when they were expelled from eden.
This may very well be a counterfeit spirituality. The bible has stated "A tree can be judged by its fruits". Knowing the hell that this serpent can do, what kind of tree do you think it is ? In addition to the physical and mental horrors, a lot of people have reported involuntary actions that make them act like snakes - including postures and hissing ! A lot of people have reported a helpless feeling like an angry demon or evil spirit is taking over their body. Unlike a lot of other things that produce side effects, Kundalini's side effects are known to commonly last a lifetime.
Another example of "A tree can be judged by its fruits" is the character of a lot of these kundalini instructors. For example, if they talk a lot about love and spirituality, yet they often burst out in rages of anger, that should tell you that something is not quite right.
Instead of diving into this risky snake pit of kundalini, I would recommend that you should consult a gifted pastor or individual with the power of Jesus in him.
It works! Faster than DSL or CABLE!.......2005-09-19
Ok, seriously...results will vary. Was this book so dangerous as others claimed it to be? Did it hold some magical blue print to a secret system that was somehow hidden away all this time from the general public? It sure sounded like it when I read the reviews on this workbook. All this danger and enhanced psychic powers for under $20 bucks! Truly, "AMAZING"...I thought to myself. So with my anxious trembling hand, I reached over and guided my mouse to the check out button. With one swift click I added the workbook to my Amazon.com shopping cart. Didn't sleep much, too much anticipating. When finally, it ( the dangerous workbook ) arrived. Good thing, reading the cover didn't make my kundalini rise up and kill me.(Just Kidding) Looking inside the workbook didn't make my chakras spin off my etheric body and leave me a hollow shell either. (I'm Kidding ok.) If I paid more than $20 for this workbook...well that might have given my blood pressure a dangerous spike upwards. So far so good. The workbook was simply just that, a workbook. I'm glad I purchased it. It will help with my study on Manifestation.
Caution.......2003-12-24
Kundalini is an extremely effective practice, and it is absolutely NOT something that should be learned from a book. Dr. Mumford's emphasis on fast results, and ego based gratification is a dangerous way to begin exploring your body's energy, and there are dangers in practicing the pranayama he advocates.
This topic should be explored with a teacher-- fast results are not always good results.
a good guide for progress but little skrewed.......2002-11-23
as a how to book for the more esoteric practices of yoga not bad, simple and direct explanations & exercises. and yes it is intense but doable.what I find skrewed is mumford's explanation of the yamas and niyamas they are little off. I would refer you to the yoga sutras or the thirumandiram. both are much better guides on the philosopy. bisides that overall a good book

Book Description
• Revised and expanded edition of the classic work on chakras by the renowned Indian scholar and tantra practitioner.
• Over 35,000 copies of the original edition sold.
• Includes full-color illustrations of the chakras to be used with the meditation exercises in the book and provides the tools necessary to activate these centers of transformative energy.
In the ancient science of tantra, the human body is viewed as the most perfect instrument for the expression of consciousness, a perfection realized through the development of psychic centers known as chakras. Located within the cerebrospinal system, the chakras are the stage upon which the interaction between higher consciousness and desire is played out. Consequently, it is through understanding and utilizing the energies of the chakras that we ultimately reach an enlightened state of being.
In Chakras, Indian scholar and tantra practitioner Harish Johari introduces the classical principles of the chakras as well as their practical application for today. In this expanded edition, complete with new art and text, he unfolds the mysteries of these subtle centers of transformation with visualization techniques essential to a fully realized tantric practice. Unlike other books in its field, Chakras provides the tools to activate these centers of transformative energy and elevate one's intellectual knowledge to an experience of spiritual growth.
Meditating on the beautiful, full-color illustrations of each chakra vitalizes the cerebrospinal centers and harmonizes the entire system both physically and psychically. Explanations of each chakra elaborate on the chakra's connection to elements, colors, sounds, sense and work organs, desires, planets and deities, as well as on behavioral characteristics and particular effects of meditation. For scholars and spiritual aspirants of every level, Chakras is an invaluable, practical source of information and techniques.

Valuable guide and reference work.......2003-10-12
The energy vortices or charkas are located within the cerebrospinal system and are the points of interaction between the spirit and the body. Each of the 7 main charkas is also connected to certain glands in the body and therefore has a role in the hormonal system.
The psychophysical energy dealt with here is electrochemical and operates through the life force (prana) that moves through the body along the nadi channels. The seven main chakras are all connected to the main nadi. By understanding this system one can cultivate a higher state of being.
This illuminating and comprehensive book includes the following chapters: 1. The Principles of Tantra Yoga, with a section on states of consciousness; 2. Kundalini Yoga; 3. The Essentials of the Chakras; 4. Chakras, Rebirth & Spirituality. The appendix consists of extracts from the Hindu scriptures on the various stages of Yoga.
The aforementioned Chapter 3 deals with each of the chakras in turn, providing a description of each, the psychological energies that operate in it, the shape, yantra and color of each chakra, its predominating sense aspects, its seed sound (bija), number of petals, residing deity and ruling planet. It was interesting to learn about the Soma Chakra, an unnumbered energy point also called Amirta or Indu, that resides within the 7th or Sahasrara chakra.
The principles of the chakra system and practical applications are discussed in detail, including visualization techniques. The text is enhanced by beautiful color paintings of each energy vortex plus plenty of interesting black and white illustrations. The book concludes with a glossary and index.
Johari's revised and expanded edition of Chakras is a very accessible work and packed with facts. As such it is ideal for both the novice and the advanced energy worker. It provides all the information, techniques and tools to activate one's energy system for enhancing spiritual growth, balanced emotions and mental and physical well-being.
Very Confusing.......2002-04-30
Why Not?
This book is very confusing, it uses a lot of sanskrit words,
which just makes it impossible to comprehend.
The information is presented with no form, they're is no way to remember everything. The book has no life in it.
The book needs more pictures, and the use of english terms instead of sanskrit.
If you are trying to learn about chakras, and yoga, this isn't the book for you.
It is like a sanskrit dictionary.
The part that really bugs me, is that it says the book is about chakras, when most of it is about Yogi Meditation.
Expect for that, the book has nice pictures (but few) and very descriptive.
A Chakra guide.......2000-05-18
This book introduces the reader to the system of energy - nadi & chakra - in our body as described in the ancient Indian tantric scriptures. Each major chakra in our body/mind system is described in detail, including the powers of the chakra and accompamying sounds (beeja mantra) to harmonise the chakra. By following these, the reader can start working on their chakras and improve their wellbeing.
The author's accompanying audio tape is very useful to learn to pronounce the Chakra hormonising sounds (beeja mantra) correctly, which is very important.
I found this book and the audio tape a useful and a simple guide to meditate (reciting beeja mantra)on the chakras without undergoing hardship.
Basic Information for a Beginner.......1997-07-07
Having only recently entered the world of kundalini, this book gave me exactly the information I wanted. Its combination of visual and verbal descriptions help me improve concentration and achieve purer meditation. Rather than focusing on the sensational, Johari presents the philosophic significance of the chakras. This is the exact information that I needed to begin to progress. A companion tape, discovered accidentally, gives the bija sounds and further enhances the experience. Thumbs up

Creatively Done.......2007-01-01
This is a really neat text. As a Kundalini Yoga Teacher, I turn a lot of people on to it. I look forward to another with alternative sets.
know about 3HO, Rick Ross and Guru Bhajan.......2006-03-04
First, the book is nicley written and the exercises may or may not work. i noticed a rise in energy and old patterns coming up, might or might not be outcome of directed intent ... ( i do a lot of systems, from asthanga, hartha to martial arts and pilates) I immersed myself in kundalini yoga before i found out about who yogi bhajan, the founder of the system, truly is (a former taxi driver who feld from India and claims to have recieved these exercises from spirit after spending time in a cave. he founded kundalini yoga AFTER he couldn't make money in NY as a cab driver and arrived in LA, thrilled by the "mayan riches" of the upper - class society there. traditional sikh say what he does has nothing to do with their system and really put the emphasis on that he is a cheat. search the internet for information, especially sites from the rick ross institute http://www.rickross.com/reference/3ho/3hovisitor.html
3HO, the organisation from Yogi Bhajan, the founder of Kundalini Yoga, has been labeled a cult, and is in fact a money producing machine that goes beyond kundalini yoga as physical exercises. The exercises by itself may not be bad, although some people claim that the risk of physical insury with certain exercises is a given; apparently yohi bhajan didn't know much about basic physical structure and function.
so i just wanted to pass on the info before someone decides to buy the books on kundalini yoga so everybody can come to their own conclusions in a balanced way. distinguish and listen to your guidance.. doing the exercises may not be necesarily "negative", but being sucked into a cult with dubious roots may not be something you really intend.
Excellent Manual.......2004-12-15
This book is organized quite well. The layout is simple and straightforward. You are taken step by step in creating your own yoga routine. First, you learn about numerology and then use it to calculate which yogic bodies you need to work on. There are two meditations to choose from per yogic body. Next, you learn about the chakras and use a chart to rate your abilities within each chakra. You then use these scores to determine which chakra to work on first. Finally, you are shown how to compose an entire routine consisting of warm-up exercises, your personal kriya (chakra exercise), deep relaxation and wake-up sequence, your personal yogic body meditation, and a completion mantra. There is easily enough information in this book to provide for years of diverse methods of practice.
The book is also very well illustrated; all of the exercises are quite easy to emulate. The final section illustrates and expounds upon aspects of the exercises including breath, mantras, mundras, asanas, and bandhs.
Something to note also: this book is primarily an instruction manual. As such, it doesn't always adequately or fully explain everything presented. If you are, in fact, looking for a training guide and not a book that espouses the metaphysics of yoga, this is not really a problem.
Gentle introduction, but lacks consistency in purpose.......2004-07-23
This book synthesizes quite well the purpose of Kundalini Yoga. The first part on numerology and chakras is well written and provides relatively unbiased information. Parts 2, 3 and 4 on the other hand stand a little behind the first part as neither Yoga nor Kundalini can be limited to Hatha Yoga, the purely physical part of Yoga most people understand of Yoga.
As correctly stated in part one, the purpose of awakening the Kundalini is not a question related to the physical plane, its purpose is to awaken another level of consciousness within. It's a spiritual issue. Awakening the Kundalini should not be done unless your spiritual consciousness rises at the same time. One should not try to raise the Kundalini without being correctly prepared to it (on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual planes), as it might be harmful. Playing with a tool one does not understand is dangerous.
Parts 3, 4 and 5 still provide useful information to start Yoga and meditation, but the book is not sufficiently self-contained to properly tackle Hatha Yoga.
So i'm rating this book 3 stars because of the lack of consistency between the first part that focuses on the spiritual and consciousness aspects, while the rest is too much focused on Hatha Yoga but without properly explaining the how's and why's. So either this book was aimed at being a compromise between the hidden and actual purpose of Yoga and the physical part of it (Hatha Yoga), or its authors do not understand Yoga as a whole.
best yoga book i've read!.......2003-10-29
This is a simple and easy way to start a yoga practice. It provides several easy to follow and understand excercises, as well as several ways to aide in choosing which set to do. Wonderful Book!

Kundalini Yoga: A Simple Guide to the Yoga of Awareness is an introduction to living your life with more awareness and spirituality, as well as a guide to the principles of this form of yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, the author's teacher. Kundalini yoga includes habits and practices that "balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, and enable us to harness the energy of the mind and the emotions," explains the author. She clearly explains many facets of this kundalini lifestyle: breathing (including breathing exercises), spirituality, food choices and preparation, chants and meditations, the chakras (energy centers in the body), self-healing, sleep, communication, and using yoga postures for health.
This is not an exercise book of yoga postures--although several are illustrated--but a guidebook toward a more spiritual path. "Spirituality cannot be taught. It has to be caught, you have to get it from someone who's got it." The book describes the path to a more spiritual life using kundalini yoga philosophy and practice. You don't have to move to a cave to adopt these practices--the author shows you how you can use them to balance even a busy, modern lifestyle. -- Joan Price
Book Description
Taught for thousands of years--and revealed to the West in recent decades by the master Yogi Bhajan--Kundalini Yoga is suprisingly simple to learn. And practiced regularly, it can strengthen the nervous system, balance the glandular system, and harness the energy of the mind and emotion as well as the body. While general yoga technique focuses on exercise postures and breathing, Kundalini takes yoga concepts a step further by integrating them into everyday life activities. This definitive guide, fully illustrated with photographs, is an accessible introduction to this ancient practice, with information on poses and positions, diet and lifestyle, breathing and stretching techniques, chanting and meditation exercises, and general guidelines that can help anyone--beginner or advanced--gain the greatest benefit from yogic practice.

Kundalini Yoga :The Flow Of Eternal Power.......2007-09-23
There is not a better book written on this subject. Shakti Parwha Kaur Khalsa is the grandmother of Kundalini Yoga and it is obvious by reading this book. I am a Kundalini Yoga teacher and I refer to this book on a regular basis for any "?" I might have on Kundalini Yoga. Do yourself a favor and select this book for your yoga collection.

Book Description
"Kundalini yoga presented Jung with a model of something that was almost completely lacking in Western psychology--an account of the development phases of higher consciousness.... Jung's insistence on the psychogenic and symbolic significance of such states is even more timely now than then. As R. D. Laing stated... 'It was Jung who broke the ground here, but few followed him.'"--From the introduction by Sonu Shamdasani
Jung's seminar on Kundalini yoga, presented to the Psychological Club in Zurich in 1932, has been widely regarded as a milestone in the psychological understanding of Eastern thought and of the symbolic transformations of inner experience. Kundalini yoga presented Jung with a model for the developmental phases of higher consciousness, and he interpreted its symbols in terms of the process of individuation. With sensitivity toward a new generation's interest in alternative religions and psychological exploration, Sonu Shamdasani has brought together the lectures and discussions from this seminar. In this volume, he re-creates for today's reader the fascination with which many intellectuals of prewar Europe regarded Eastern spirituality as they discovered more and more of its resources, from yoga to tantric texts. Reconstructing this seminar through new documentation, Shamdasani explains, in his introduction, why Jung thought that the comprehension of Eastern thought was essential if Western psychology was to develop. He goes on to orient today's audience toward an appreciation of some of the questions that stirred the minds of Jung and his seminar group: What is the relation between Eastern schools of liberation and Western psychotherapy? What connection is there between esoteric religious traditions and spontaneous individual experience? What light do the symbols of Kundalini yoga shed on conditions diagnosed as psychotic? Not only were these questions important to analysts in the 1930s but, as Shamdasani stresses, they continue to have psychological relevance for readers on the threshold of the twenty-first century. This volume also offers newly translated material from Jung's German language seminars, a seminar by the indologist Wilhelm Hauer presented in conjunction with that of Jung, illustrations of the cakras, and Sir John Woodroffe's classic translation of the tantric text, the Sat-cakra Nirupana.

Customer Reviews:
An Incredibly Intense Read.......2007-05-25
I found this book an incredibly intense book to read. There's nothing simple about it. I had hoped for both clarity and understanding and received neither. I kept reading...hoping upon hope that Shamdasani's words would hold me spellbound and captivated.
I seek truth in its simplest form, but did not find it here. While I am certain that Shamdasani's intent was to provide the reader with an intelligent read, his need for intellectual diatribes created, in stead, an emotional abyss; I found that I could not connect with his analysis without great intensity of focus. Frankly, I didn't have either the time or the inclination to work that hard to grasp the connections.
Had Shamdasani employed simplicity of thought and content as his guides, the average reader might actually benefit from his wisdom and intellect.
Worth reading both for Jung and for Shamdasani.......2006-02-27
Jung's ideas on Kundalini are brilliant, but reveal more about Jungian psychology than Kundalini.
As with all of Shamdasani's writing, his introduction provides a historical context that both enriches Jung's interpretation and tells us much of the era in which his ideas emerged
Although Jung didn't understand kundalini phenomenon..........2000-06-02
...or what we now refer to as Spiritual Emergence, he amplifies the chakra symbols with such interesting illustrations that the book is well worth the price paid for it.
