5 out of 5 stars You just can't skip the metabolic adjustment phase..........2007-03-23

This book was a life-saver for me. I carried extra weight on my body from 12 years old until my late 20s, despite numerous attempts to lose it. I was isolated, miserable, exhausted, and fed-up! I bought this book and read it 3 times through before I was ready to commit, but when I did, it was a miracle! I lost 35 lbs in 2 1/2 months, then continued losing over the next year to reach a total of 60 lbs lost. I am now 32, having kept the weight off for 4 years.

YOU MUST DO THE METABOLIC ADJUSTMENT PHASES!! I wonder if the other reviewers who had issues with this got so caught up with the rapid weight loss that they didn't want to take a break and let their bodies adjust. The two week adjustment is what makes this diet better than any other I've seen. It takes into account the body's tendency to plateau and rewires your metabolism to continue working throughout the process. I swear that I have a better metabolism now than I did in my 20s! I do not have to follow the diet anymore, I simply try eat a healthy balanced diet (a little heavier in protein, lighter in carbs) and do regular cardio and strength training workouts. Nothing excessive, just the standard recommendations. And when I start to indulge and put a few lbs back on... I do a cycle or two of Lean for Life and it's off in no time.

It is restrictive, and requires daily planning so you keep your nutrients in line. But when you start to see the results, and FEEL the results, it's hard to give up. And because it is quicker than many other weight loss programs, it's something that you only have to do for a limited time.
I have purchased 3 copies (I lose other things besides weight). Best 60 bucks I ever spent!

4 out of 5 stars LFL- hard to start, but successful end.......2007-03-22

I lost 50 pounds on LFL, over about 5 months. I "cheated" a little bit, i.e. had a Grande non-fat latte everyday because I couldn't give it up. However, I followed it pretty closely most of the rest of the time. I danced 3-5 nights a week for exercise. After I lost the 50 pounds, I gradually went back to eating whatever I wanted and kept the weight off for over a year. In fact, I ate like a complete slob-whatever I wanted and still kept the weight off. Unlike some of the other people who reviewed this product, I definitely think that my metabolism rate was RAISED by this diet or I could never have eaten the way I did and not gained the weight right back. I also stopped dancing, because I was back in school and had no time. If I had just eaten reasonably, I am convinced the weight would have stayed off.

The only thing I did not like about the program, was the quick-start protein days. It was pretty hard to eat only protein for three days. The cravings were AWFUL. However, after the three days of cold-turkey no carbs, etc., I must say it was easier to follow the program. Also, I do like my carbs and it is a tough lifestyle for me to follow. I do give it a high rating overall though, because it performs as advertised- I did lose the weight. I have a friend who lost 100 pounds on it and has kept it off for several years. Also, two friends who have lost 20-30 pounds on it and kept it off.

5 out of 5 stars Great weight loss book.......2006-07-27

My mother read the book and lost 10 lbs. Great book, but you have to follow the book plan for life. If you stray away from the book, the weight will probably come back on.

5 out of 5 stars strict program -good results.......2006-07-03

The book is well designed and very clear about how to progress through the program. The first time I tried it I lost about 50#. I have a hard time maintaining the low carb lifestyle...so I guess the title is misleading for me...but when I start to put on the weight, I know I can pull out the book and drop it quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Works if you follow directions.......2006-03-13

I lost 35 lbs on this diet and have kept it off for 3 years. The most important point is to follow the time limit - 4 weeks on the strict diet and 2 weeks on the metabolism speed up part. I was able to eat a lot of food without gaining weight after finishing the metabolic raising diet. It gave me more awareness to reach for something like yogurt, edamame, an egg, jerkey, protein bar, instead of pretzels and other low fat carb snacks. I've always have eaten a lot of veggies so I ate even more than the portion control recommended. I had trouble losing weight by cutting back because I always exercise and don't a lot of calories anyway. Making myself eat more often and eating more balanced meals gave me a lifetime way of eating. I would recommend that people try to eat more vegetarian protein. I can't eat large portions of meat and at first had stomach aches. I ate more veggie burgers, edamame, wheat gluten products, etc. and did much better. Like any diet you have to go through a difficult period of cutting out empty calories and reducing your portions. I'm now a size 4 and have a plan to keep the weight off for life.

5 out of 5 stars You can become LEAN FOR LIFE with this book!.......2002-04-21

Over the years I have written a number of diet book reviews ... I am happy to say that LEAN FOR LIFE is the last diet book I will need to review. LEAN FOR LIFE WORKS and I don't need to read anymore diet books!

The book "Lean For Life" has since been updated and retitled. It's now called "Lean For Life Phase One" and is available ... and at leanforlife.com. I would advise purchasing the new version instead of shelling out the extra money for an out of print copy of the original Lean for Life.

Lean for Life Phase One is a book that you do. Each day you are given step by step directions to follow to mentally and physically achieve your weight loss goals.
The program begins with a "prep" period where you buy the items you need for the diet and prepare yourself mentally.

The next 3 days are protein days. You select protein choices from a given list. I was shocked to find that it was easy. I ate cheese, yogurt, drank milk, protein bars, nibbled on chicken, eggs and more.

This is followed by a period where you add vegetables, grains and fruit from a list. The program is designed to get your body in a state of ketosis so you do not experience cravings, mood problems etc. AND IT WORKS!

On previous programs I had cravings for sweets and could not stick with the plan. But with LFL your cravings (if any) are very manageable and you eat so you are not hungry!

Each day adds in new mental concepts to work on to learn to become LEAN FOR LIFE. Exercise is also included - how much to do and when to do it for best effect.

After a cycle of weight loss you go into a period of metabolic adjustment adding in yet more food. Then you can repeat the cycle of weight loss if you need to lose more or you can go on to the carefully designed maintenance plan. Everything is planned out so you will become LEAN FOR LIFE and not gain the weigh back!

I have lost weight quickly, safely and with ease. It's a wonderful program and I highly recommend it! I am finally achieving my weight loss goals thanks to LEAN FOR LIFE!

5 out of 5 stars Lean For Live ... The Miracle Diet !.......2002-01-10

I cannot even start to describe how wonderful it feel to look at myself in the mirror and see a new me..... After struggling for years to lose weight, I finally found my answers on April 2001 when my husband's best friend introduced me to the Lindora Diet. He had lost 85 Ibs in 10 months and I was truly amazed. I ordered the book and started the diet on April 7, 2001. The first week I lost 10 Ibs. I never felt better in my whole life. As of today, January 9, 2002, I am now 145 Ibs for 68 inches. I have lost altogether 80 Ibs and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT !.
Nothing comes easy but Lean for Life is worth a try.

5 out of 5 stars YES! You CAN EAT...and LOSE WEIGHT! I DID IT! You CAN too!.......2001-08-02

This book changed my life! I've been a cronic dieter my whole life. After gaining over 50 pounds with my daughter's pregnancy...and still having 20 to lose at her first birthday, I decided to do something about it. This book was the answer to my prayers. I thought that I had to starve myself to lose...and even that wasn't working any more! After ONLY Eight Weeks on the diet all 20 of my extra pounds are off and I'm working on those extra 10 that I thought would always be a part of me! I'm happy, healthy, THIN and EATING! You can be too! I hope that you buy this book and stick to the plan. It really does work!

5 out of 5 stars Lean for Life.......2001-05-04

Lean for life is the best diet book i have ever read. I have been over weight my entire life. I have lost 107lbs in 7 months. I continue to lose the weight and feel wonderful. I have energy and now i have the key to live my life with success. Anyone who states this diet does not work has not given it a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Great for losing weight.......2001-04-28

I have been following this diet since my mom joined the lindora program in our town. I have lost almost 30 pounds in about 6 weeks and I feel great. I do not get tired and actually feel more energized. I do crave breads and sweets but I have a big sweet tooth. This is an easy way to lose weight and keep it off. Definately recommended.

    Book Description

This guide to taking your enterprise lean focuses on the steps that management and workers must collectively adopt to transform any organization into a lean operation. While everyone agrees that reducing waste in a factory is a good thing, one must first learn how to recognize bottlenecks, poorly designed workstations, workflow disruptions, and other roadblocks to productivity: then, clear, decisive steps to remove these and all other forms of waste from the factory must be taken. In Implementing Lean Manufacturing Techniques: Making Your System Lean and Living With It, Julian Page draws on experience gained in a wide range of manufacturing environments to provide modern lean alternatives to traditional factory methods. His techniques are fully detailed, practical, workable, durable, and proven in real-life applications, and they are accompanied by step-by-step implementation and evaluation guidelines. Most importantly, the author shows that actions are not enough, the workforce must be taught to accept lean, not have it forced upon them. Examples are provided where necessary, and useful tips and words of caution help guide the reader through sequential steps to becoming lean.

4 out of 5 stars Former Mr. Universe Promises You Can Have A 'Lean Body' In Less Than 100 Days.......2007-05-16

We've all heard the saying that if you commit to doing something long enough, then it will very quickly become a habit and a regular part of your routine. And that is the secret behind former Mr. Universe Lee Labrada's book entitled The Lean Body Promise: Burn Away Fat and Release the Leaner, Stronger Body Inside You.

I think I love this guy (in a brotherly kind of way, of course!) because he just makes sense. And he should know what he's talking about since he has appeared on magazine covers, on television shows, and headed up an anti-obesity campaign in Houston, Texas. As a world-class bodybuilder, Labrada has seen all the good and the bad when it comes to health and he shares it in this engaging book.

With a natural wit and ability to connect with his reader, Labrada goes through step-by-step what YOU need to do to overcome the mental obstacles that stand in the way of your eventual success, provides examples of people who have been successful to serve as inspiration for your new journey, arm you with ample motivation for getting the job done, providing specifics about the kind of diet you should be eating to attain optimal results, and, of course, give you specific direction about how to workout your body to look and feel better than you ever imagined.

Sounds awesome, doesn't it? But aren't books like The Lean Body Promise just a bunch of marketing hype from people who have never had to deal with being overweight and out of shape? While that's probably true about many such programs, you can sense Labrada takes a personal interest in seeing real success from average everyday people like you and me. I think he really does care about YOUR success and will celebrate with you once you reach your goals.

The chapters in this book zoom by quickly thanks to Labrada's unique conversational style and the very clean formatting. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have his smiling picture looking at you from time to time to encourage you to implement his strategies into your life to change it for the better. It's like he's watching you as your own personal weight and fitness coach!

Easy-to-digest sections in each chapter are followed up by "The Skinny So Far..." to recap the primary points Labrada wanted you to remember. This is an extremely helpful way to reinforce the lessons you have learned so that you'll be well on your way to having that "lean body" he promises in just three months! YOU CAN DO IT!

As someone who has lost nearly 200 pounds on the low-carb lifestyle, I did have a few concerns about Labrada's views about diet in The Lean Body Promise. It wasn't all bad, especially his disdain for sugar and simple carbs, processed foods, trans fats, junk foods, and even those packaged low-fat foods. We totally agree that these are NOT good for you no matter how you slice it.

Where we part company is on the subjects of saturated fat and complex carbs.

Tons of research has come out and will be coming out very soon (remember the names Dr. Jeff Volek and Dr. Stephen Phinney) showing the minimized impact of saturated fat on the body when carbohydrate-restriction is in place. On a low-carb diet, such as Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (the one I followed), consumption of red meat, egg yolks, bacon, butter, and the like are all extremely healthy for you because the atherogenic impact is minimized.

Actually, what Volek and Phinney have found is those who eat a high-carb diet that is lower in saturated fat content actually have more saturated fat in their blood than those who eat a low-carb diet that is higher in saturated fat content. This is a revolutionary new discovery that's gonna turn everything we've ever known about fat and heart health on its head. It's something the late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins talked about frequently and now the science is catching up to him.

As for the subject of complex carbohydrates, Labrada claims these are not as bad for you as simple carbs because they take more time to be digested and broken down which slows their impact on your blood sugar. While that's true, these carbs are still metabolized in the body as sugar. Even the supposedly "healthy" whole grain foods like oatmeal, brown rice, beans, corn, rice cakes, peas, and whole-grain breads and pastas should be avoided as much as possible to limit insulin spikes.

Despite our differences on these issues, I am still glad to know there are people like Lee Labrada out there trumpeting the cause of improving health and helping people realize they CAN change their diet for the better. The Lean Body Promise is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to learn more about how to whip their body into shape, shed the pounds, burn the body fat, and get healthier than they've ever been in their entire life.

That's a promise this former Mr. Universe says you can take to the bank!

4 out of 5 stars Great workout & nutrition advice.......2007-03-15

Lee Labrada's book has really helped me change my body for the better. It gives great advice on nutrition and exercise.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide.......2006-09-28

I am in no way trying to be a body builder or to be extremely cut or ripped but I wanted practical excercises that would help me tone/build muscle. I believe this book is ideal. While the excercises are not difficult they are a little on the challenging side especially if you are a sedentary beginner. Therefore, I suggest starting off with lighter weights and then as your strength and endurance grows increase the weights.

I just got this book in August but since I added weight training to my routine I am seeing more results. In his book Lee suggests cardio once a week. I do a cardio routine for 20 to 30 minutes after after weight training because while I'm trying to tone/build I want to loose fat and cardio is another important method of fat loss. So that's what I do for myself

I also like the nutritional tips and suggestions provided. However, I have a much better book on the nutrition that I got from Amazon for $11. If excercise and nutrition is important to you then this book and Dr. Jamie McManus' Guide to Wellness book should be in your library.

Everyone is a little different and some of these things won't work the same for everyone but ultimately you will see results. Buy the book. It's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as "Lean Body", but is worth the price.......2005-12-28

I own 'Lean Body', the work of Lee Labrada and his friend and nutritionist, Keith Klein, as well as Lean Body Promise. After reading both, I tend to enjoy Lean Body a little more than Lean Body Promise (LBP), but I understand the idea of Labrada's latest book.

'Lean Body' is really geared more toward someone who would like to actually become a body builder. The overall eating and exercise plan in 'Lean Body' is more strict than the one given in LBP, telling me Labrada is trying to target a larger audience who does not want to get down to 3-4% body fat. But that approach makes sense, seeing there are many more people in the US who simply need to lose weight rather than those who want to become bodybuilders. So at worst, Labrada is giving this nation another no-nonsense fat loss program that truly works.

I am a big fan of Labrada and think he provides people with a good motivational base to start a TRUE fat loss program. Others have said the info in his book can be found for free online, but I dare you to find such info in as inspriational a book as this one. But since we are talking about free items, you can go to Labrada's website and find tons of free resources to supplement this book.

To me, the info in LBP is common sense, but the fact of the matter is that MANY people don't know about the very simple concepts presented in this book. Eating 5-6 small meals a day, cutting out refined carbs, not spending 2 hours a night in the gym....these are all things Labrada reinforces in his book. If you did not have this knowledge and found it in this book for the $20-25 price and used it to lose 30, 50 or 100 pounds, then you'd think it was worth it right? Of course so!! That is really what Labrada is trying to do with LBP - make losing fat as simple as possible so ANYONE can do it.

Despite presenting a fat loss program that is simple and effective, Labrada makes sure the reader realizes that it takes hard work to achieve a lean body. Many programs are sugar coated and make the reader believe that it will take minimal effort to lose fat, when in fact it takes serious dedication and consistency to achieve fat loss (for most folks that is).

Is it the "end all, be all" diet and exercise book? Of course not, but most books are never the ONLY book one needs for any given discipline. In my opinion, it is a great book to add to anyone's fitness and nutrition library. It has a great combo of inspiration, true stories, a model for an exercise and diet program, and great recipes.

Being a 29 year old who used the program in his first book once before to lose 30 lbs in 12 weeks (and is doing it for a second time to get below 10% body fat), I can attest that the info in this book is more than worth the price of admission. After completing the program in late-May 2005, the weight has stayed off, which is an even bigger testament to how the program provides long-term results.

Even better, I have a 55 year old mother who followed this same program to lose weight when no other fat loss program ever worked for her. So I have first hand experience with the info Labrada provides and can give my personal seal of approval.

At the end of the day, the reader has to execute and want fat loss bad enough to make the program work. But Lean Body Promise sets the stage for anyone to successfully lose fat and keep it off. The fact that the info in his book is simple should not discount the fact that it is VALUABLE info.

3 out of 5 stars Casual narration of personal success story with plenty of shortcomings.......2005-10-12

The author is a civil engineer and bodybuilder yet claims to be an expert on nutrition, health, and fitness based on his personal accomplishment as a bodybuilder. He does not consult any scientific reference, let alone educating himself about common social, psychological, or physiological issues that interplay in health and fitness.

His secrets for success in bodybuilding were mainly due to eating less and exercising more. That he explains rightfully as inducing "calorie-deficit" in order to rid off excess fat. Yet, he believes that with such individual personal circumstances he could master the whole knowledge of nutrition and health applicable to diverse and wide human population. For example, he argues that there are two main reasons that cause people to fail in maintaining healthy and fit living and describes them as (1) map or knowledge of what to do and (2) fuel or motivation to keep doing it. That is very simplistic approach to understating why people end up the way they are. Socioeconomic factors play greater role in the final outcome of engaging in fitness. Moreover, when people start exercising late in life, change is exceedingly difficult with or without motivation or knowledge.

By relying solely on his shallow understanding of nutrition, the author erred on describing the macronutrients and their caloric meaning. For example, he classifies carbohydrates as a separate category from fruits, vegetables, and deserts, which sound like carbohydrates aren't chemical ingredients of food but rather their generic names. He also makes the common mistake that a single gram of alcohol contains about seven calories, on Page 92. Moreover, he claims that alcohol hardens your arteries without citing any authoritative reference.

His poor knowledge in anatomy is demonstrated on Page 124, where he advocates that the Sit-ups and the Good Mornings should be outlawed because the former trains the iliopsoas while the latter stresses the low back. As if the iliopsoas muscle is not vital to healthy spine or stressing the low back differs from stressing other joints for the sake of strengthening them. From his workout chapter, you could easily see his sole emphasis on the upper body, using machines, and isolation exercises. He does not recognize the existence of "power clean" or coordinated lifting. All his workout routines are imitation of many books on weight lifting that are mainly geared for profit with minimal effort on the author's part. His statement that bending the legs in the sit-ups converts them into crunches shows his inaptitude in understanding muscular function. His understanding of fitness as massive musculature has caused him a hunched upper back that many bodybuilder experience due to building excessive and isolated muscles without checking their functional balance in the interim of building up.

The flawed data in the inspiration chapter are apparent in the very low body fat index in chubby males. Some falls in the range of 6% to 12% for apparently not so skinny folks while a skeleton-like man in his photos has an 18% body fat index. It sounds like the author believes that body fat index is the ultimate index for assessing fitness. These inaccuracies in presenting data add to the general impression of a sloppy author. Also, starting each chapter with his own photo is another paranoid fix. Had the author strived to educate himself on the physiology and anatomy of exercise, he might have succeeded on transforming his personal success in bodybuilding into a wider scope of educating others with more humble attitude other than claiming to transform the whole state of Texas into a less-fat state.

5 out of 5 stars Great Diet Book!.......2005-05-19

The book is more about a lifestyle change than a diet. It is a 21 day program that teaches you to eat five meals a day. You will never go hungry on this diet because you are constantly eating. Eating five meals a day is hard. Obviously there must be a "catch." The catch is that you are eating healthy foods. The 21 day program gradually transitions you into eating five meals a day and eating healthy food. If you follow the program, you will lose weight.

The sample meal is a grilled chicken breast, a baked potato and a cup of fibrous vegitable. Who could be hungry on such a meal. The challenging is that all of the meals must be low fat (20% fat or less) and low sugar. If you have a non-supportive significant other you may need to cook two meals, one for you and one for them. If you want to do the program, buy a bunch of small tupperware containers and pre-make your meals.

The book is written for a target audience of women (you can tell because the mentioning about exercise plays down building muscle). The primary exercise is walking. I am a man. All in all, it is a great book! I bought the book for $7, when Larry North was selling his program on TV for a couple of hundred dollars. It is sad to see this book sell for $0.68 cents used.

Great book, it really works and is just so simple.

    5 out of 5 stars A Truly Sensible Plan.......2003-08-13

I have tried so many diets I can't even count them anymore. I have tried various other way-of life-diet plans with little or temporary success. This book is so straight forward, simple and easy that I sometimes wonder why I ever thought eating healthfully was hard...and this is a pizza-fried chicken-Little Debbie kind of girl! So far I have lost 10 lbs in 9 days...a feat that I have NEVER accomplished before. (Remember, it's different for everyone so you may not all lose like that.) In addition, I'm not at all hungry; lord knows if I was I wouldn't be sticking to it! I love his motivational bits as well...the majority of overeating really has to do with the mind rather than actual hunger; that he focuses on changing negative patterns and thoughts is very important. In addition, I find the voice of the book very friendly and encouraging. Also, the cheat meal being incorperated in the plan is wonderful: instead of feeling guilty and continuing to break the plan, you feel like a cheat meal is a deserved reward, guilt free! If you're looking for a book that will lose the weight for you magically, it's not the book for you. You have to work: on your mind, your eating, and your physical activity. But work is great when it's to improve your life! I have noticed tremendous changes in my attitude and behavior, and would highly reccomend this book to anyone who needs a sensible, non-time-consuming plan.

My mum bought this book b/c she hated her love handles. I was on a "diet" as well as I wanted to be part of the 'cool' teenage crowd. Seeing all those weight-loss informatals on TV, I rolled my eyes as she paid for the book but being a bit of a bookworm I read it on the car ride home. Bang! I was hooked. He completely educated me on my very bad eating habits he helped me lose lots of weight.
Only recently did the book find it's way to my mum's shelf. Those amazing habits though will always stay with me.
    Thanks Larry

    5 out of 5 stars A lifestyle change that's easy -- and healthy.......2002-11-14

I've been overweight my whole life -- until I discovered the Slimdown! I lost 60 pounds in six months and changed the way I eat and exercise. North suggests a balanced meal plan. He doesn't encourage weight loss at the cost of health like many of the 'no carb' diets that are so popular now. The Slimdown is not just a diet, it's a change for life. You will learn how to change bad habits to create a healthier you. It's fantastic!

      Book Description

Dr. William Sears has long been seen, along with Dr. Spock and Penelope Leach, as one of the leading pediatricians in the book business. Now all of the kids he helped as babies are older, and 15% of them (or about 9 million children, per USA Today 10/9/2002) are overweight. An even greater number are out of shape or unhappy about their physical appearance.

That's exactally why Dr. Sears has designed the L.E.A.N. PROGRAM FOR KIDS. This is the first publication by a brand name in the field of childcare that is offering a concrete program for overcoming the greatest health risks to school aged children: being overweight, underfit, and unhappy.

Written for parents to read by themselves or share with their children, L.E.A.N. PROGRAM FOR KIDS arms today's families with everything they need to overcome the dire statistics and lead a happy, healthy life.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! Every family should read this book!.......2005-09-29

Dr. Sears' L.E.A.N. Kids is just what it says - a total health program for children ages 6-12. But it is also so much more! The authors have tackled the growing problem of unhealthy, sedentary, and overweight children in our society. Dr. Sears expresses a strong wish to help all children be lean - that means not skinny but healthy! He has developed a total program to aide in this endeavor and it is excellent.

Dr. Sears outlines a very thorough plan called the "L.E.A.N. Kids program" that helps kids become lean and healthy and avoid these health pitfalls of modern life. His plan addresses lifestyle, exercise, attitude, and nutrition.

While this book might be exceptionally helpful for the parent of a child who is struggling with a weight problem, it will be indispensable for ALL families who want their children to grow up healthy, happy and strong. This book is relevant to parents of children of all ages - from a mom with a newborn, who will benefit from knowing all these things BEFORE bad habits set in, to the mother of a teen who needs to be guided away from junk food and video games and toward a fun, positive, healthy lifestyle.

This is a great program and very inspiring. After reading this book, our family made a few changes in our diet [though we learned about nutrition from Dr. Sears many years ago and already were eating pretty well!], but we made drastic changes in our activity levels. We have begun running together as a family at a local track three nights a week, doing yoga with the kids, and working in other types of exercise in fun ways. Our children LOVE it! They are so glad mommy got this book! We were surprised at the enthusiasm we got from our kids when we started the program - they WANT to do it. Even our two year old is enthusiastically running a quarter mile at the track and is so proud of her little self!

I am grateful for having read this book. I feel like our children [and we ourselves] will be much healthier as a result. As always, reading Dr. Sears has made a very positive impact on our family!

As a pediatrician, diabetic, and mother of two boys, I had nearly given up hope for finding sound advice on teaching kids good lifesyle, exercise and nutrition habits in today's world. This is THE book for motivated, devoted parents who are willing to do what it takes to raise healthy, happy children. Wholistic and practical, scientific and compelling all at once. Worth every penny and more. Thank you Dr. Sears!

      Book Description

New York Times best-selling author Dr. Pamela Peeke helps readers trim their waists, shed pounds, and lengthen their lives in her witty, tough-love functional fitness and lifestyle plan.

With more than 300,000 copies in print, Dr. Pamela Peeke’s New York Times bestseller Body-for-LIFE for Women has helped scores of readers transform their bodies. Her newest book shines light on the heavy weight of the 21st century lifestyle, with its fake food, desk jobs, clutter, and endless stress, and asks readers, "If your life depended on it, could you run up four flights of stairs right now? Are you Fit to Live, not only to survive, but to enjoy life?" For most people, the answer is no and they don’t know it.

Combining Peeke’s trademark in-your-face wit with heart-stopping reality checks, Fit to Live offers readers an active health/lifestyle assessment: How many pushups can they do in 2 minutes? How many servings of processed foods did they eat today? Peeke translates those results into research-based predictions of readers’ long-term prognoses and helps readers gauge just how much fat—mental, nutritional, physical, financial, environmental—to cut from their toxic lifestyles to become Fit to Live. Showing how these five core areas intertwine, Peeke offers bottom-line strategies to adapt and adjust to life’s stresses; get a stronger, leaner body; enjoy greater financial security; and create a healthier living space. Readers will become Fit to Live and lead dynamic and exciting lives, both now and for the future.

I bought a pedometer to calculate my steps on an average day of raising 3 little girls. 10,000 is the goal according to Peeke. This book is very motivating and easy to listen to. Her voice is well suited for a cd.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Peeke is the best.......2007-07-15

Wish I could have a personal consultation. I've seen Peeke on Discovery TV Health Challenge and this is the second audio version of her books I've purchased (as well as Body for Life for Women). She makes so much sense and keeps on top of the latest info--plus shares her insights from personal practice. Her advice is keeping me fit and healthy as I face the mid-life challenge!

5 out of 5 stars This is the real deal........2007-05-28

I read Dr. Peeke's new book in one sitting, and it's just as great as "Body for Life for Women," with a whole bunch of new meaty (and nutritional!) insight. She gets it; this book is the ultimate instruction manual for a good healthy lifestyle. It's about transformation and progress, not perfection. I'm one of Dr. Peeke's fans, and a patient, and I am in the midst of my own "Fit to Live" revolution; and this book is almost as good as a personal session with Dr. Peeke in the flesh. She is really as funny, honest, encouraging, visionary, and dedicated to making people's lives happier and healthier in print as she is in person. This book IS her, and her common sense and compassion are in every page. Dr. Peeke says that when you're ready for change, real transforming change, you need to own the process. In my opinion, you also need to own this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great advice ;-).......2007-05-20

I've seen Pamela Peeke interviewed on many shows over the years and she consistantly seems to make sense to me. She's very knowledgable and in another book of hers that I've read, she makes her subject matters very easy to understand and relate to.
The main theme inside this new book is the way our 'toxic' lifestyles can make us fat and how we can make some changes in order to be fit and healthy. She starts out by saying how she's there to save your life if you let her. She poses the question (one that made me really think) "If you had to suddenly leave your comfort zone and run for your life, hoist your body out of a broken elevator, run after a child headed toward a busy street, or grab a tree limb to stop from falling, could you do it? Are you Fit to Live?" Your answer will either shock you to your core or make you proud. Not many might be able to answer yes. She talks about toxic belly fat (this is very scary).
This fascinating book is a bit of a twist on weight loss and fat reduction books. It's well written and thought provoking and will almost surely change your outlook on your life as a whole - no matter what area (financial included). I found it really interesting and she offers great advice. I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars A godsend for the teenager suffering from obesity and low self-esteem........2007-04-18

Many overweight and/or obese teenagers and young adults suffer from both low self-esteem and insecurity--I myself (at one time) suffered from this problem. This book's authors have incorporated many of the key elements of Lindora's Lean For Life program which have made it such a success. Written with compassion and insight, it can be a great aid for those teenagers and young adults dealing with obesity and the low self-esteem so often associated with it. My only regret is not having known what I do today (I started the LFL program at the age of 30--after having been obese for years while dealing with yo-yo dieting).

We teens lead some pretty extreme lives. In between bungee jumping, sky surfing, and looking for new places on my body to pierce, it can be a total bummer trying to eat right. That's why this book is way cool!!!! The 28 day program rocked!!! You gotta give it up for this one!!!!

5 out of 5 stars an excellent help-book for overweight or troubled teens.......1997-12-23

i'm really very excited about `bodyPRIDE' simply because i have a teenage boy who was overweight and in a lot of despair about it. we used this book on a daily basis and within 4 months, he dropped several pounds. more important, his self-awareness and self-esteem grew dramatically. now, he's trying out for junior varsity football and is more happy about himself. the plan is easy to do and takes you through it, step by step. your kid can do it with you or, better yet, by him or herself. the language talks to them directly, i think. if you have a problem with your kid, this is a good tool. honestly, art richman

Larry North's program is based on exercise and diet principles well-known to fitness professionals but often mysterious and counterintuitive to people struggling with weight problems. He explains, in an engagingly conversational (but annoyingly self-aggrandizing) way, how eating actually speeds up metabolism and burns calories, and how exercise can be effective without being too strenuous. Sometimes he goes overboard in putting down strenuous exercise--there's a lot to be said for pushing yourself hard--but if his approach makes entry-level exercisers more comfortable, that's probably a good strategy.

      Book Description

In Living Lean, fitness expert Larry North breaks through all the confusion of fad diets, exercise programs, deceptive fitness frauds, and "low fat" products and starts you on a program to lose fat, get lean, and look fabulous. Whether you'd like to lose five, ten, or a hundred pounds or reshape your whole body, what you want to know is HOW DO I DO IT? North's motivational yet realistic grogram, featuring a six-week plan for eating the Larry North way, easy-to-make recipes, and fuel-burning, muscle-toning exercises, brings immediate results. You'll gain more energy and feel better about yourself, and you'll soon want to see how far you can go. So take the first step toward the body you've always dreamed of.

In Living Lean, Larry North cuts through the jargon and tells you

      * how to examine your relationship with food and why you've failed in the past

      * how to eat more to lose weight

      * how to go from a size 16 to a size 10 (and beyond!) and never look back again

Empathetic and inspirational, in Living Lean Larry North shows you how to get results without starving or overexercising and keeps you focused on achieving your fitness goals.

4 out of 5 stars A balanced, common sense approach to eating and lifestyle.......2003-04-04

This book details a balanced approach to eating to lose weight, with focus placed on cutting out the fat, and eating a good balance of protiens, carbs, and fibrous vegetables. In eating six smaller meals a day, you can speed up your metabolism and with exercise speed it up a bit more. The program is about getting your muscles in shape, and increasing muscle mass so you burn more calories both while exercising and while resting.

However, It is worth noting that if you're on a tight grocery budget, and a tight schedule this program is nearly impossible to carry out. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are expensive, as are the other ultra lean meats you need to eat. Preparing all the meals is time consuming, and if you've got a whole family to prepare meals for, well, it's a bit much.

Even though I do have that problem with the book, I reccomend it highly to someone who's willing to comit the time, money and effort to eating right and exercising. This is a healthy, and balanced approach.

      4 out of 5 stars Takes planning........2003-03-13

I really enjoyed this book, it was no nonsense and the food plans really do work. I did not understand the exercises too well, but I think that they are improved upon in his later book. I lost 7 pounds in a week, but unless you have a set schedule it is hard to eat larger meals as often. It was easier for me to grab fruit as a meal. But, overall if you stick with it, it will work. I even did my own exercise routine and it was fine.

I purchased this program over 1 year ago, and I am sure it is a good product, but it did not work for me. I returned the merchandise and was never refunded my money or the products. I contacted customer serviec on numerous attempts by phone and correspondence and finally the number was disconnected.
I was very disappointed in the product and the customer service and therefore in Larry North, because ultimately his name is on the product. I just want the comsumers to be aware that if they do not like the product and decide to return it, to be careful because you will not be get your money back or even the merchandise that you return.

5 out of 5 stars Living Lean: The Larry North Program.......2001-09-27

I have been following the program almost to a "T" (except for the beer on the weekends) for the last 5 weeks and I have had fabulous results! It has been so easy to follow and I NEVER feel hungry. I have lost 15 pounds and several inches. So far, I have gone down 2 sizes and I feel and look much better. I get so many complements now and I am loving life! I plan to stay on this "healthy eating" for the remainder of my life. This is not a diet, this is a way of eating for the heath of it! I would love to speak with Larry to tell him how much I appreciate this and what a world of difference he has made in my life. My husband has also started the program, but he is not as strict as I am and he has lost 24 pounds, go figure! Way to go LARRY NORTH!!

      5 out of 5 stars I was a size 18!!!!.......2001-08-20

In January!!! I weighed 200 pounds at 5'4" tall. Needless to say, that is overweight. I have to admit, I did not commit to everything in this book, not because I didn't want to, but just because I am not a great follow through person. That said, I have to tell you, my size 14 pants are baggy on me!!!! In case you missed my title I was a size 18! The exercises were easy and effective, and I look absolutely great now. I am committing more now that school is back in session and my kids are in school during the day and I have my routine back! I am beyond happy with this book, and it is truely a life changer!
