Book Description
Six years ago, John McManamy, a successful financial journalist with a law degree, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Through his successful website and newletter, he has turned his struggles into a lifelong dedication to helping others struggling with depression and biopolar disorder reclaim their lives. In this book he will share his own experiences and struggles and the struggles of his fellow patients, while offering a guide to making the most out of life with these challenging disorders. Like the other successful titles in our Living Well series, this book will offer a holistic approach to battling depression and BD, including everything from diagnosis to associated illnesses and symptoms to medication and talk therapy and even what to expect and how to cope with the effects these disorders have on relationships and sex.
Most importantly, McManamy writes with a compassionate and eloquent voice, describing his belief that depression is a wide spectrum that reaches from occasional bouts of depression to full–fledged bipolar disorder. This will be the first book to help patients recognize the diversity of their disorder, while offering wide–ranging solutions to keeping their lives in order and living well.

What makes this book fantastic..........2007-08-19
...is that instead of accommodating you to your illness, it hands you tools and a mission: REMISSION IS THE GOAL. Where other books hold your hand and tell you to use your tools, this one evaluates each tool so that you can use your intelligence and experience to choose what to use. After I read this book I saw pharmacalogical psychiatry in a whole new way: instead of drifting from drug to drug, I am deploying the ones that work best for me. I decide what side effects are OK. I decide whether to try a new drug. The doctor's opinion plays an important role, but I get better results when I carefully and conscientiously follow my instincts.
This book is filled with things I might deploy, from lifestyle and diet tinkering to medicine. And the goal of all this is to drive my illness into full and complete remission. After reading this book I am doing better than I have in a long time.
Don't miss the advice about taking your mood temperature frequently, as opposed to waiting for the symptoms to begin. Intercepting changing moods before they gain momentum is extremely important.
Take a giant step ahead from the patronizing how-to books out there and the currently fashionable medicines, and understand what's new and what's happening in depression and bipolar. Some readers will find a few chapters heavy with science, and decide to skip to the main points, but those who want to know how this disease is being fought and conquered will find it far ahead of other volumes. Oh, I'm sure there are some other good books on bipolar out there, but if you're ready to change your entire perspective on your illness for the better, give this one a try. It may not change your life as dramatically and rapidly as it did mine, but I defy anyone with bipolar illness to argue that this book isn't full of the most potent information available between two covers.
For those who are also ill, my best wishes for your recovery, and remember, THINK REMISSION, not treatment of symptoms.
From One who Lives this Every Day.......2007-08-14
It took many years and many medications for depression before my doctor finally diagnosed me with Bipolar Disorder. The first book I bought and read was John Mcmanamy's "Living Well with Depression and Bipolar Disorder - "
I couldn't put it down as so many pages were "me". My husband read it with much interest, and said it helped him to understand events of the past and how we might both deal with this problem together in the future.
I highly recommend this book.
Holistically Awesome!.......2007-07-21
Before reading this book, I had alredy read at least 5-7 books on the topic. This book is the most holistic book I have ever read on the topic. It covers everything, and it is written in a very down-to-earth manner. It is a book with ideas and concepts that almost anybody with bipolar II can relate too. I have almost 20 books on this subject, and this is MY NUMBER 1!!! It is not only beneficial to the person suffering from this illness, but amazingly wholesome and complete for anybody wanting to understand more about this illness in a loved one.
Well done!.......2007-07-12
I have not finished the book, but the information I have obtained has been very helpful.
Living Well with Depression and Bipolar Disorder.......2007-03-09
This is a great book for those suffering from a mood disorder..the most common, and in many ways, most complex type of mental illness. John McNanamy, whom I have met personally, uses illustrations from his past and present, and anecdotes from visitors to his award-winning website to explain what mood disorders are, and how to effectively treat and manage them. He backs his points up with the latest clinical data and findings, and the book is highly readable for those with, and without the illness.

Bibliotherapy.......2007-09-04
Full disclosure here: I'm a holistic doctor, so I'm biased towards natural interventions for mood disorders, and this is stuff that I talk to patients about on an almost daily basis. But I've seldom seen natural therapies for psychological conditions presented in such a balanced, clear, scientific fashion.
I sometimes blanch at the outlandish claims made by some health books that deal with mental conditions. I think they cruelly mislead patients to believe that there's a vitamin or a supplement for every psychiatric complaint. Reinforcing denial is not good for patients at risk to themselves and others. But Jack Challem is versed in the latest science, and never strays far from the evidence in making his case for natural approaches.
There's clearly a place for drugs in the treatment of mental disorders, but I wish books like this got wider circulation because we could relieve untold suffering with a few basic suggestions herein. Studies have actually shown that good self-help books cure sufferers of mild to moderate depression at a rate comparable to that of Zoloft, Paxil and other commonly used drugs. They've even coined a term for it: "Bibliotherapy"!
So take this book and call your shrink in the morning--it may really not be so far-fetched! I think I'll start stocking it in my dispensary to give to my patients.

It makes sense -- and it works!.......2007-08-14
Jack Challem seems to have written this book just for me. I was so tired of seeing doctors who merely prescribed multi-bad-effects medications and who each told me a different cause of my problems. I had to became very proactive to save my own health.
I was always exhausted, in body and spirit. I felt like I was in a constant brain fog, getting early Alzheimer's! I awakened more tired than when I went to bed, longing to take naps, no needing them. I have had fibromyalgia for 15 years and am taking medications for this, taking two medications which help tremendously but cause side effects. I have hypertension, am an adult with ADD. Like most people I am stressed, anxious, impatient, lack focus, taking care of an elderly parent......sound familiar? But I am an early retired teacher who loved her job and should be more relaxed and healthy. I want and need my active life-style back. I'm not "that old"!!
Well, I was literally sick from taking meds, so I picked up Mr. Challem's book just by chance and found I COULD help myself, was doing so many wrong nutritional things, made some of his easy, suggested changes and, to my disbelief, found great relief within two weeks! I have always taken supplements and watched my health - so I thought - but still felt bad most of the time. And only the suggestions made in this book have helped me feel so much better. This author makes sense.
In the easiest reading and well organized presentation, Mr. Challem specifically presents HOW food affects mood and four steps to change. He discusses real, every day problems: how to realistically reduce our levels of stress and anxiety, how to handle our irritability, how to have more energy. And his suggestions, fully explained so even I would understand them, worked!
He goes on to take us step by step through a "recovery" process in which we can "fix" ourselves - armed with nutritional understanding and easy to do changes in our diet and life style. And best of all Mr. Challem clearly points out the specific connections between foods and moods and gives the reader things to DO and things to avoid....along with some of the best recipes I have ever tried.
While all his information is data based, I could easily understand the author and put his connections and suggestions to use immediately. And they have made a wonderfully positive change in my health, my entire life.
And he sells no supplements!
This book is a perfect gift for any friend or family member (underlining and notes will have you hold on to your own copy!) who has hypertension, fibromyalgia, ADD, exhaustion, depression, who is overweight or those irritating characteristics of impatience, irritsbility, stress, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, forgetfulness ---- characteristics we certainly notice in THEM but seldom admit about ourselves!
Buy this book for your own health and sanity --- and some to give as gifts to those you care about. These ideas make sense and work.
Enlightening & Informative - Several lightbulb moments!.......2007-08-10
I had difficulty understanding why I acted certain ways when my stomach was empty or full for that matter but now I know why I act the way I do after reading The Food-Mood Solution. My friends use to kindly remind me to eat something when I got too cranky for them to tolerate. Food really does effect your mood. If you don't think so, you really do need to read this book! Enjoy......
Eating healthy means feeling great.......2007-08-03
Controlling moods with food is nothing new for me. The trouble was I went to the wrong foods for a quick fix that had a negative effect on my health, weight and moods. Jack Challem's book is full of stories I can relate to and it is worth the price for his recipes alone. They are terrific!
Excellent Expert Solutions.......2007-07-01
A concise, insightful, easy to understand read that can liberate the average person from the downside of the average American diet. Look around and see how right Mr Challem is, then test his theories in your own life. It's a relief to see what great, quick results you can get when you try his solutions.
Book Description
This true medical detective story describes the author's four generation family odyssey that leads him to paths less traveled. He discusses multiple biological causes of and effective nutritional interventions for those suffering from bipolar disorder and other central nervous system (CNS) disorders. He explores new typologies for "mental" illness, as well as assumptions and practices in the justice and mental health systems that impact those with CNS disorders. A totally different way for patients, parents, teachers, therapists, police, prison guards, nurses, doctors and judges to think about mental illness.

A story that is all too common...but the outcome gives hope.......2007-09-20
Great book not because it is perfect but because it is a real story about the very real odyssey that families many times go on in pursuit of a solution for their mentally ill family member. Narrative in a "you are with me kind of stream of consciousness" you feel like you have stepped into the authors world and you get to participate in the day in day out detective work to find the causes an solutions to his son's "bi-polar" problem. The book shows the short term benefits of drugs for controlling symptoms but but the author is far more interested in in understanding the kinds of issues that relate to the specific causes of bi-polar which are different for everybody and found a wide variety of research the demonstratively shows nutritional deficiencies and imbalances as well as allergic reactions to various substances including vaccinations can lead to the very symptoms described as bi-polar. This is the first book you should read because instead of providing you the latest popular theory it is a true exploration of the health issues surrounding the emergence of constellation of symptoms know as bi-polar disorder. You will be much more well prepared to do your own research after reading this book. That is why is is so powerful.
Excellent book with numerous references .......2006-06-25
One of the best thought provoking books I have read on BP.
Provides answers to some of the questions related to dietary, and immunlogical links to BP, that I have always asked my doctors but for which I have received no answeres from them. The book does not have all the answeres and at times wanders in many directions. However the content summarized in the book will take one years to research otherwise.
Alternative Treatments Work!.......2005-11-22
I have been researching the drug industry and psychiatry over the past year and have attended a Harvard Medical School seminar to see what is being taught concerning psychopharmacology. What I have learned is that for generations, orthomolecular physicians have been curing mental illness by recognizing that brain malfunctions are caused by medical problems such as thyroid, kidney, and sleep disorder problems, an immune disorder cerebral allergy, metal toxicity, Candida infestation and enzyme and nutritional imbalances such as essential fatty acids deficiency (malnourishment). Biochemical testing can assist in determining underlying causes. Harvard's Dr. Stoll recommends fish oil to provide essential Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins as an effective treatment for depression.
According to Prescription for Nutritional Healing P. 448, A thyroid condition can cause fatigue, mood swings and depression, P. 153: An allergy is an inappropriate response by the body's immune system to a substance that is not normally harmful." P. 157: "Cerebral allergies cause swelling of the lining of the brain." P. 154: "Persons between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five are the most allergy-prone..."
Entire food families can cause allergic reactions in susceptible people. Repeated headaches, or schizophrenic, violent, or aggressive reactions, can be an indicator. Foods such as corn, wheat, rice, dairy products, and chocolate, and certain food additives, are the most common offenders but chemicals such as petrochemicals or other substances, like mold can also cause serious problems. Other manifestations of food allergies are; acne, arthritis, asthma, chest and shoulder pains, colitis, depression, fatigue, food cravings, headaches, hemorrhoids, insomnia, intestinal problems, muscle disorders, obesity, sinus problems, ulcers, and unexplained dramatic weight changes. The list goes on and on. Allergies can also affect children diagnosed as Autistic or exhibiting ADHD.
To cure, orthomolecular physicians have patients stop eating what they are allergic to. One doctor I read about reported that about 50% of his supposedly schizophrenic patients were just allergic. These physicians remove toxic metals from the body, they rid the body of Candida, and they provide supplements as needed. A proper diet is also wise to fuel the brain with essential nutrients and exercise to provide oxygen to cells and to assist in removing toxins via sweat glands.
Unfortunately, the drug industry has such an influence on psychiatrists that it is still common to do superficial physical testing (if any at all), ignore the results, and rather than determine the cause and fix the problem, they try to cover up symptoms with mega doses of drugs that cause damage and even disability. Just one of many adverse effects from psychiatric medicine is brain damage - the neurotransmitter imbalance known as Parkinsonism where a person can no longer walk or talk normally due to extreme slowness. According to Merck's web site, the disorder's pathophysiology is "inhibition of dopaminergic system due to blockage of dopaminergic receptors by antipsychotic drugs." An excellent, very alarming book is Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs, which was written by a psychiatrist who saw the damage drugs cause and who has stopped practicing psychiatry. According to this publication, drug trials are not unbiased and these drugs are no more effective than placebos, and they cause permanent brain damage.
If psychiatric drugs could cure, you would be able to take them and stop. Instead, drugs mask and/or change symptoms, they can be addictive, and they have serious side effects. Drugs are toximolecular. They are substances foreign to the body, in sub-lethal (and sometimes lethal) amounts. Drugs should be used only as a last resort, emergency measure. Other treatments also cause permanent harm, such as electric shock that is well known in the industry for causing permanent memory loss.
Just one person mentally distressed, disabled by drugs, and not able to work, will cost at least two million dollars over a lifetime, so this is an issue that impacts all of us.
This book is a step in the right direction. Drugs are not the answer.
FINALLY!!.......2005-11-05
A must read for everyone(doctors, patients, family) dealing with Bipolar Disorder. I have read many, many books on the subject and this one is hands down the most informative it opens so many new doors for treatment.Thank you David Moyer!!!
Nutrients Quiet the Unquiet Brain.......2005-08-01
Reads like a thriller and is very difficult yo put down in the first half. The medical chapters are rather hard to understand but essential to the "plot". I immediately logged on to the website and await my supplements eagerly!
A great writer - able to put the points across clearly and succinctly.

In a newly revised edition of Depression, the Mood Disease, Dr. Francis Mondimore explores the many faces of an illness that will affect as many as 36 million Americans at some point in their lives. Concise, informative, and accessible, this widely acclaimed consumer's guide has been thoroughly updated to reflect state-of-the-art treatment. It tells readers exactly what they need to know about antidepressant drugs and electro-convulsive therapy, about Seasonal Affective Disorder and panic attacks, about the special problems of depression in children and older persons, and how to deal with a depressed friend or family member. Dr. Mondimore explains how such disorders as hormonal imbalance can mimic the symptoms of depression, and why depression is sometimes misdiagnosed as PMS, drug abuse, or Alzheimer's disease. The revised Depression, the Mood Disease offers needed advice -- and a message of hope.

Awful, just awful........2002-04-22
Note: I bought this book to try to learn as much as possible about depression, and about the ECT's that my friend was about to receive.
I found the several points that the doctor had to make about depression, as well as the anecdotes he used to illustrate them, mystifying, to say the least. At one point he tells of a woman who is brought in to an emergency room in a psychotic state and he promptly prescribes a course of ECT's for her. It turns out the reason she was psychotic was because of side effect of the cancer medication she was on. Not only didn't Dr. Mondimore say "Whoops, I guess I blew that diagnosis", when he learned later that she was taking medication which caused the depression /psychosis she was suffering from (aren't doctors supposed to ask what medications your taking?), but actually patted himself on the back for making her feel more like her old self, for the last few months of her life. Way to go Doc!
Unfortunately, my friend's experience with her psychiatrists has been similar. Medication after medications, which haven't helped, only made her worse, and ECT's which were of no help either. But I digress.
Please check out the books by Peter Breggin, and Elliot S. Valenstein for valuable information you probably won't get from most doctors, and leave this book on Amazon's shelves.
excellent writing.......2000-12-21
This is a great resource book. It is very useful for someone that is has just been diagnose with depression. It tells about every thing you need to about depression. Such as the treatments, causes, and a overview of depression. Mondimore wrote this book splendidly for people that dont understand the jargon of depression. I would highly recommend it for someone just diagnose with this terrible disease.
The book helped me understand my feelings are not unique........1999-02-23
I have had several episodes of severe depression. Although I am a nurse and have the advantage of being around psychiatric healthcare providers, I had a hard time accepting that it was happening to me. This book really gave me insight and helped me to understand the disease. It is written so the non healthcare worker can understand it. The case scenarios brought the theoretical to life. I recommend this book to anyone who has depression or who is trying to decide if you do or if you have a significant other who has depression. The book also explains the medications which are used and why different ones are used at different times. It describes how important the psychiatric community is to helping you deal with this disease. Having someone who really understands depression and the medications will save you time in feeling better.
I was very impressed with this book.......1997-12-16
It was more than just a handout of conclusions that you have conjured. It was a self-help book for me. I believe I have found what is wrong with me that the doctors were unable to conclude. I was excited to see that there was something out there with clear and concise information. Sincerely, Raelene Lee
