Exellent book.......2007-10-04
This book says so much, it makes you want to call up the author and thank her.
Great Book for the New Mother.......2007-07-21
This book has been an awsome reference. When my son gets a fever they go high. I didn't like always giving tylenol. Aviva gives great ideas for this and so much more. I have looked up so many ailments for my kids, but just as much for friends that I have told about the book. She gives advice on most of the common illnesses, including a breif summary, causes, symptoms, dietary recommendations, Herbal recommendations, remedies and more. She is not against a doctors care and actually recommends it when neccisary. But she gives many other common sence options to try before taking your child in for a two minute appointment that costs $100 and ends up with a, "yep he has a cold give it a few days and he'll be fine."
Informative.......2007-06-09
I am learning a lot as my kids grow. This book is full of information about home herbal remedies, many of them from things I am growing in the garden. I like it's emphasis on health through nature. The book is divided up into problems with solutions and has several very informative introductory chapters. I would recommend this for anyone who has young (or older!) children and is tired of being dependent on cough medicines that don't work and sugar suspended tylenol that rots the teeth and doesn't help the problem.
LUV it.......2007-03-05
This is an excellent book for those interested in taking healthcare into their own hands. Thoughtful words of inspiration, simple herbal and dietary instructions for a variety of illnesses. We reference it all the time.
Piece of mind.......2006-03-22
Great ready reference for mother's who don't like to pump their children with antibiotics and would prefer to try a natural remedy first
Book Description
This is a comprehensive guide to the use of medicinal herbs for mothers with young families.
Amazon.com
Even if you're a parent who prefers the straight and narrow of allopathic medicine, you'll find numerous tricks for soothing your little one in Gentle Healing for Baby and Child. From minor issues like splinters or a skinned knee to a nighttime cough that your prescribed medicine just isn't relieving, master herbalist Andrea Candee offers simple, safe remedies made from ingredients that you'll probably find in your kitchen.
Most chapters are focused on either a specific part of the body (skin, respiratory system, digestive system) or an age group (from infants to teenagers). You may be tempted to head directly to the chapters of most interest to you, but don't skip over "Dosing Guidelines." As with any medication, herbs must be taken properly in order to be safe, and following the simple charts of dosage frequency according to age and weight is an easy way to prevent problems. You'll also find suggestions here for getting some of those hot, pungent herbs down the hatch--it may take more than "a spoonful of sugar" to get your child to ingest doses of cayenne and garlic.
Some items show up repeatedly in Candee's book. Onions, garlic, honey, lemons, and salt are all commonly available and inexpensive, and can help with everything from sore throats (warm salt and lemon gargle) to an ear infection (onion poultice directly on the ear). Garlic, "nature's antibiotic," can take care of colds, parasites, and "anything about to become a something!" Honey works to soothe skin and the respiratory system. (Note that honey shouldn't be given orally to an infant; their immature immune systems might have difficulty fending off any botulism spores that might be present.)
Offering new and friendly ammunition for a parent's arsenal of healing techniques, Gentle Healing for Baby and Child is an excellent addition to the family first aid kit and a fantastic way to avoid overreliance on prescription antibiotics. --Jill Lightner

The definitive guide for parents looking for an alternatives.......2002-10-27
Written by a Master Herbalist who has worked with physicians and in her own private practice for the past 25 years, Gentle Healing for Baby and Child is the definitive guide for parents looking for an alternative to common treatments for everyday problems. In an accessible format, this guide includes solutions to ailments that occur both inside and outside the body. Got acne? Try an herbal detoxification, an herbal steam, or some Herbal Zinc Zapper. The Zapper recipe contains a mixture of zinc oxide, peppermint, and comfrey. Got a stressed out teen? Dose him with some Honegar - a mixture of honey and vinegar - to restore his chemical balance. In this book, the authors explain that the "floral nectars that comprise honey contain B vitamins and minerals which are calming to the nervous system." While you've got the honey jar out, don't forget to layer it over your little one's skinned knee before applying a bandage. Honey contains natural "anti-microbial properties."
Also included are sections that address subjects such as "Healing Imagery," as well as instructions for dosing herbs, where to find a local natural health practitioner, how to deal with toxicity, and even testing for food reactions. Herbalist Candee has created a helpful, easy to use guide to natural healing for parents. --Reviewed by Michelle Smith
A Wonderful Reference!.......2002-02-21
As a fairly young herbalist myself, i am very pleased with all the informative and varied rememdies suggested in this book. It is very easy to reference and very user friendly; nothing complicated. Andrea Candee offers a gentle manner in her representation of suggested rememdies. I have bought three extra copies to give as baby shower gifts! It's really nice to see such a variation of alternative rememdies/treatment talked about in this book, such as homeopathic, chiropractic, essential oils, onion poultices, and of course herbal preparations. It's nice to be able to make your own decision on a few different suggestions in many cases. It has been a great reference book for myself and other friends with babies as well. I highly recommend this book!!
Natural Healing is Naturally Great!.......2001-06-19
This book is wonderful! It provides useful alternatives to common everyday ailments that are gentle and effective, and it's easy and fun to read, too. Everything you need to know is clearly presented and referenced. The remedies are simple to prepare or obtain, and because they're made from nature's products, you don't have to worry about their effects being too strong for your child, or even yourself. Andrea Candee provides helpful information on how to decide upon which remedy is best as well as how to help "the medicine go down." This is a wonderful reference for every household. I love it!
Natural Remedies for Parents..or Anyone!.......2001-06-08
This book is a resource to revisit again and again. I received "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child" as a gift, and was delighted to discover that it's chock-full of suggestions with applications for all family members. The authors have compiled a comprehensive, (but clear and succinct!) collection of natural remedies, illustrations and anecdotes. Introducing a wide range of herbal therapies for day-to-day problems as well as chronic conditions that sometimes can be addressed naturally, Candee does not eschew the value and necessity of skilled, conventional medical care when appropriate. She is a Master Herbalist, experienced and well-versed, and she speaks nationally on her subject, but she also appears to work comfortably within both conventional medical and holistic communities, embracing "the best of what works." Her own parenting experiences are shared in a friendly, comforting way and in clear, simple language. She covers a lot of territory, and often suggests more than one option. In my own work, facilitating mind/body stress-management, I meet concerned parents all around the country beginning to explore integrative therapies and become as informed as possible, to meet their children's health needs, and their own. So I was especially pleased to see that Candee pays considerable attention to the roles of stress-reduction, empowering children, emotional support and compassionate care, with what she refers to as "an educated heart." From acne and allergies...to pneumonia and vaccinations, "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child" allows room for individual philosophies and personal preferences as Candee offers her own expertise with a light, gentle touch. There are many roads to Rome. "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child," is a thoughtful tool for parents, or anyone at all, to include in their decision-making for optimal health and wellness, extremely well-organized, and has an unusually detailed table of contents, as well as a comprehensive index for quick searching.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.....however............2005-06-17
This is an excellent resource book. Rosemary gives you natural remedies to common ailments that children suffer from. Her books are easy to read and comprehend and a valuable addition to any herbal library. I can't say enough good things about her books: she gives you recipies to follow, ways to prepare herbal concoctions in various forms using a variety of bases and her writing is very down to earth.
Here is the however: This book and a few of her others are completely included in her book "Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal". The "Family Herbal" includes: Taming Stress & Anxiety, Home Remedies for Everyday Ailments, Recipes for Radiant Beauty, For Children, For Women, For Men and also For Elders and even more information then that - including information on how to prepare herbs, An A - Z Herbal Apothecary, etc...
The only book, where the topic is also touched on in "The Family Herbal", I would purchase aside from "The Family Herbal" is "Herbal Healing For Women" and any of her other books whose titles aren't included in "The Family Herbal"
Disappointed at Unusable Dosage Charts.......2004-10-12
The book's dosage charts for children don't work in the context of the book. The book instructs you to determine the child dosage based on adult dosage, yet the book neglects to tell you the actual adult dosages for many of the recipes throughout, so that you can't make this determination. Occasionally, the book does recommend an actual child dosage rather than directing you to the "dosage charts" without sufficient information.
Otherwise, the book seems easy to follow and can be entertaining.
I'd love to meet this author.......2002-05-04
She seems to have such a sensible, grounded approach. I have two young children and am very glad I bought this book.
Things that impressed me:
1. There's a dosage chart, based on age and weight
2. She's obviously not trying to replace a family physician or holistic health care practitioner. The suggestions given are more along the lines of caring for common childhood illnesses...colds, relieving diarrhea or constipation, mild rashes, etc...things that a parent would often care for at home, unless severe.
3. The author's obvious care for people, experience and intelligence shine through on every page.
A great book for parents!.......2001-08-16
This is a great book which overviews the gentler herbs which can be safely used with children. Unlike many herbals, this book gives precise dosage guidelines for children by weight and age, AND, more importantly, precise recipes for salves, poultices, teas, syrups, and other forms in which herbs can safely (and easily) be administered to children, including which herbs can be safely mixed and which cannot.
The recipes are classified by illness/symptom, and there is a short section which discusses a holistic approach to not only treating illness/infection/problems, but also preventing future problems. There is also a brief section which overviews the characteristics of commonly used herbs (for children). I use this book with my children almost every week. Without a doubt, Gladstar is one of the best, and this is a must-have for anyone hoping to use herbal remedies with children. It is a serious book about herbal medicine, but easy enough for the beginner to use.

Book Description
Written by a leading practitioner in the field, this clear and practical guide describes the use of key Chinese and Western herbs in the treatment of childhood illnesses, focusing on methods of treatment that lead a child back to health rather than suppress symptoms. The book examines remedies used for a wide variety of common conditions and illnesses, and explores how to break the cycle of symptoms leading to a chronic condition. It conveys a solid understanding of the particular needs and unique aspects of treating children, at a level that is accessible to both the practitioner and the interested parent.
Book Description
• The first guide to using safe and gentle Bach flower remedies with children, this friendly, easy-to-use book will help parents care for their children's well-being on a daily basis.
• The wide range of symptoms covered makes this book an invaluable resource for teachers and other caregivers as well as parents.
In this first easy-to-use guide to safe and gentle Bach flower remedies for children's health and well-being, author Barbara Mazzarella insists that it's never too early in a child's life to use gentle flower remedies to foster harmony and balance, the birthright of every child. The author provides in-depth profiles of the thirty-eight Bach Flower remedies along with practical applications for common childhood complaints, including teething, weaning, tantrums, fear of school, nightmares, learning difficulties, and hyperactivity. Short stories and visualizations designed especially for children can be read aloud to children at naptime or bedtime in order to enhance the effects of the flower remedies. Combined with the energies of the flowers themselves, these meditations and stories will help children overcome distress and grow into healthy, well-adjusted adults.
Customer Reviews:
Very Useful Book.......2006-07-22
I have always had my homeopathic remedies made by a pharmacy and was skeptical of remedies that could be purchased at a store. Well, when all else failed to work for me, I decided to try the Bach remedies and they worked! From there, I branched out into treating our cat and also my children.
This book is easy to understand and use. As most Flower Remedy books do, it starts with a short introduction. From there, it goes on to list the remedies alphabetically and to explain which sort of child would benefit. In a style that reminded me of Waldorf School educators, the author also included a short story to be told to the child related to their personality type. Very interesting.
At the end, there is a chart listing the remedies and the conditions each one can treat. This is a very useful reference. This chart differs from the chapters because it also lists physical problems, as well as emotional personality. For example, I looked under pimples for my daughter. Of course, Bach thought that physical problems all had emotional or psychological roots to begin with.
This is a book that I will consult over and over again. It is very well done.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
What about vaccinations?.......2005-03-25
My only complaint with this wonderful book is that it doesn't touch on childhood vaccinations. This is an important topic in natural healing and the word vaccination isn't even mentioned in the index. Since this book was written in 1998, perhaps the chickenpox vaccine was still very new and the measles vaccine was very commonly used. I understand that one book can't cover all topics, but this is a big one. I would think parents who are looking for natural alternatives to health and healing would like to at least question their options when considering when and whether to vaccinate their children. There is an entire chapter dedicated to treating chicken pox and herpes, but nothing on measles. Neither vacccination will I give to my 11-month-old son and I am always looking for more information on the topic.
Although the book isn't loaded with complex medical terms, it isn't shy on information. It is written for the layman (with occasional pictures and tips boxes), and provides a well-rounded approach to diagnosing and gently treating COMMON illnesses in children. At the same time, the authors were careful to encourage traditional medical advice when appropriate
Useful but lacking info on older babies.......2001-03-01
This book has been very useful for me and my 4 children. I found the subject of the use of herbs with children broad, but lacking for children under 1 year. The many tips and recipes were wonderful and easy; the charts were helpful, and the "when to see your Dr" was especially useful.
I give it 4 stars for lacking matter for older babies and also because it is very pro-vaccination and there's almost a bias against those that choose against doing so. However, the mention is minimal, so if you can overlook the few mentions of the vaccination issue this is a very wonderfully written and useful book.
An excellent book on kids' health.......2001-01-23
As a mother of a 14-month old, I have used this book numerous times. It is a life-saver for someone who is not intersted in feeding their kids antibiotics at the first sign of sickness. I have found all the answers to all of my questions about my daughter's health, starting with how to correctly evaluate fever to natural remedies for vomitting. The book is very well organized -it's easy to find answers to any common medical questions one could have. I feel so good about treating my daughter the natural way - I know it is so much better for her in the long run. This book is a must have for any parent who is interested in natural ways to promote and keep their child's health.
A must for those with Children or Grandchildren.......2000-05-23
After reviewing this book from the prespective of a Certified Holistic Nutritionist, I believe this to be an invaluable resource for those who have children in their homes. It is full of common sense information that will help parents in protecting their children's health without compromising it due to unnecissary drugs.
A Mom Friendly Book!.......2000-05-23
Thanks to Linda White and Sunny Mavor for an easy to use reference. Finally a book that focuses on kid's health with understandable remedies and ingredients that available from your local grocery or health food store.

Very helpful for new mothers.......1998-08-13
This book was a gift for me when I was pregnant with my first child who is now eight years old. I've used many of the remedies in the past and continue to use them now. I prefer herbal remedies to the over the counter medicinal treatments, so I was delighted when I received this book. I now have other family members with infants and toddlers who call me for remedies. I refuse to part with my book, but wish to buy the book as a gift for others. This book is easy to follow.

Customer Reviews:
A MUST HAVE.......2003-02-20
I was given this book as a gift and it certainly has been one! I have not found another herbal book that measures up to this one. Aviva's simple and beautiful explainations, instructions, and information are so welcome and refreshing.
If you're looking for a herbal/wholistic health book for your family THIS is the one you want.
Very informative.......2002-12-31
This book has lots of great usefull information that crossreferences beautifully. I highly reccomend it to anyone with small children or a spouse that just acts like one. This definitive guide illustrates many helpful applications for all times in a child's life, as well as pregnancy, post partum and beyond. You NEED this book.
This book is absolutely priceless........2002-05-20
You will find more information packed in here than you would in five traditional childcare books. Aviva fills the pages with not only commonsense but easy-to-read-and-understand remedies for a wide array of childhood illnesses and complaints. She also includes a lot of information for expecting moms that are healthy, effective words of wisdom. If you are familiar with using herbals and a hands-on approach to illness, then this book is a refreshing compilation of information that will result in you nodding your head in agreement. It is also wonderful to have all the different illnesses and remedies in one place. No more searching for that stray note or book with one quick blurb about a possible remedy for this or that. If, on the other hand, you are not familiar with using anything but a regular doctor or over-the-counter medicine for every illness, this book will be comforting for you as well. It is not an anti-doctor approach at all; in fact there are certain areas in which Aviva mentions that using a doctor is necessary. However, she also includes things that the parent can do to accompany the doctor's techniques. Everything in this entire book is very empowering to parents and women who are expecting. Often, the first thing we are told to turn to is an over-the-counter med or a quick trip to the doctor's office, and we are left feeling helpless to comfort our children. Aviva stresses how important and powerful the mere touch of a parent is in the healing of a child, and she supports the idea that there is emotional healing to be done as well as physical healing for any illness. The herb list is extensive and there are many easy-to-follow directions for tonics, teas, washes and other healing ideas that can be made at home, even by a sleep-deprived parent. The remedies do not involve a lot of searching for hard-to-find ingredients or supplies. Each remedy is simple and starts with a non-invasive approach. I recommend this book for any expecting couple, new or experienced parent. You will find yourself turning to it again and again .

I found "Nature's Children" to be a wealth of knowledge on herbal remedies. But I believe the main thrust of the book is how to raise children in as natural an environment as possible. She discusses everything from nursing and weaning to fever and fasting, the benefits of sunlight and moonlight. It was very easy reading and quite a page-turner full of interesting stories and examples of healing. The author obviously has extensive experience and the book is filled with references to usages with her own children and people in many parts of the world including her chosen people the gypsies. She proves the benefits of a mostly raw-foods organic diet for children offering practical tips for their consumption and enjoyment. The book includes sketches of many herbs as you would find them in nature. Also included are recipes, some of which I am eager to try, but all are interesting and varied. I highly recommend this book for anyone eager to learn more about the many benefits of herbs in a story-book format that includes an index or for the reader interested in the organic vegetarian lifestyle. This book will certainly compel one to yearn for more nature-based living.
