Book Description

From the award-winning author of the best books on puberty — A completely new book written especially for 8-11-year-old girls, playfully illustrated in an appealing, two-color design.

Young girls before the onset of puberty have a curiosity about their soon-to-be changing bodies that needs addressing in a simpler way than for their older sisters. In the proven, trust-worthy, Madaras-friendly voice and style, this entirely new book now brings them the same kind of thoughtful, down-to-earth information—but at a reading and understanding level that's just right for them.

Responding throughout to real-life questions and observations from younger girls, Madaras explores the strange and thrilling changes that are happening, or about to happen, to them, including: the development of breasts, body hair, and body fat; the changes in their reproductive organs, both inside and out; their first period and all the complex feelings surrounding it; the unwelcome appearance of acne and new body odors; and, perhaps most important, how to respect and celebrate their unique bodies, even when the outside world is not always so accepting.

Lively cartoon drawings throughout make the book not only helpful, but fun to read, too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction for "tweens".......2007-10-11

I bought this book (along with a stack of others) to begin a dialogue with my 9 year old about the facts of life. Of all the books I reviewed, this one most well suited my daughter, with its colorful (and playful) illustrations and conversational tone (she loved the "eew gross!" references!).

It adequately (and thoroughly) begins the discussion of how her young body is beginning to change, while avoiding any real (and not yet necessary) details about sex. Of course, it does reference the fact that all of these changes are ultimately happening to make her body ready for having babies....but spares her the gory details she is just not yet emotionally ready for.

We read much of the book together, and it is playful enough to foster a nice opening for dialogue on the changes she is about to go through. She has approached me several times while reading it on her own with questions, and has referred to it a couple of times when, for example, she was feeling some growing pains, and when she was trying to make healthier food choices while packing her own lunch, etc...

Overall, a winner. I'd highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Good As it Gets For Me.......2007-09-24

It was a very hard decision for me to choose a book and this ended up being the one I chose for my girl. Mainly because it has alot of information and fun graphics that help make this serious topic a little more light hearted. Some of the info is a bit much for my 9 1/2 yr old but I can see her referencing back to this book later. My important focus was for my DD to understand her menstrual cycle and what is happening. It's a bit detailed regarding the female reproductive organs which I think is just a bunch of big words for her now, but like I said can be something she can reference back to as she gets older. I did like it's recognition of how these changes can make you feel awkward but the author encourages her young readers to feel proud of themselves. This book could have been better if the author had explained intercourse but apparently she has a different book for that.

There were so many books and so many varying reader reviews from not enough info to porn for the same book! For example the reviews on the American Girl My Body book are glowing but for me there was no detailed explanation as to why a woman has her cycle, there was alot of fluff that was okay for younger girls but not a girl approaching puberty. I think that shows that this is a very individual choice for each family. My reccomendation is to browse here but go to your local library or a bookstore and look before you come back to Amazon to buy. I think the best book is the one you write yourself, but since that's not going to happen it's important you have a chance to look cover to cover for the book you know your child will be reading cover to cover several times over the next few years - good luck!

4 out of 5 stars Don't Forget Your Son!.......2007-09-15

I purchased this book for my 11 year old son so that he could have a better understanding of what makes girls tick. He already has a good bit of knowledge on boys body development and we wanted him to know more. This was a good general information book that explains the changes he is already seeing in some of his classmates.

Great Book! Lots of good solid information for a younger girl of 8yrs.
We did not read the whole book because it was not information she needs right now.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book to start talking about growing up and changes.......2007-05-11

I notice some changes in my daughters appearance and I knew it was time to start to have some discussions. We have worked our way through two chapters reading together and talking about stuff. A heck of a lot more than I got when I was growing up. Hopefully this will help her get through these changing times

"Hanging Low, Keeping Cool," "A Hairy Question," "Feeling Private/Feeling Guilty," "You Don't See Any Blind, Crazy Morons Around Here, Do Ya?"

Can you guess what all these chapter titles are about? Give you a hint: everything you ever wanted to know about (but were afraid to ask)... You got it, boys and puberty! Author Lynda Madaras and her daughter Area Madaras have expanded and updated their sensitive, detailed, often witty guide for boys on the cusp of adolescence. To help boys realize they are not alone in their concerns about masturbation, body hair, growth spurts (or lack thereof), female puberty, voice changes, perspiration, shaving, and sexuality, this classic guide is written in a down-to-earth, nonjudgmental style and filled with answers to the many questions boys have as their bodies begin the transformation into adulthood. As a result of thousands of reader letters over the years, as well as the ever growing body of information about puberty in boys, the third edition has been revised to include more detailed discussion of penis size (the authors get more questions about penis size than all other topics combined), updated information on acne treatment, expanded sections on eating right, exercise, steroid abuse, and weight training, and important facts about STDs, AIDS, and birth control. Filled with anecdotes, illustrations, and diagrams, the guide is designed with the understanding that some boys and parents will want to read it together, while others will want to pore over it on their own. Either way, this resource will prove to be incredibly useful for boys and their parents over these strange, exciting years. The companion volume for girls, What's Happening to My Body? Book for Girls is a must-read as well. (Ages 8 to 15) --Emilie Coulter

4 out of 5 stars Growing Up.......2007-08-11

A very good book that has answers to questions that some parents have a hard time explaining and talking about. Worth getting and keeping on your book shelf.

5 out of 5 stars It depends on the child - great for my son!.......2007-07-10

I got this book on recommendation of a friend who read it with her son at age 10.

I read a prior reviewer's comment that no pre-teen boy would ever read this book on his own. My husband and I introduced this book to my son when he was 11 (right before the start of 6th grade). My husband and I pre-read the book and then I casually gave it to my son, asked him to read it and to ask us any questions. At first I noticed him glancing through it and skipping around from chapter to chapter. Whenever he had a question, he'd come to one of us - but not too frequently.

Two months into middle school, my son seemed to be reading the book all the time. I am assuming it was because of the "older" discussions, etc. the boys were having. I also thought that he may be trying to figure out if the information he was getting from friends at school was correct. My son initiated several discussions with us about information he read in the book. I don't think he found any of the terms too clinical. In fact, I believe the book gives the correct terminology and some common or slang terms as well. (i.e. "wet dreams") I have always taught my son the correct terminology for body parts, etc.

When my son's school (all boys) had their health seminar at the end of 6th grade, he took the book to school with him - I believe to share it with the teacher (a female).

All in all, I think the book was very informative and gave my son the truth.

I would suggest that parents read it first to determine if their sons can handle it. I cannot imagine giving my child this book on his 10th birthday - he was definitely NOT ready then. But my friend did just that and she, her husband, and her son developed weekly discussions on it.

4 out of 5 stars Good conversation starter........2007-05-17

My husband and I have always been very open with our son regarding sex and body issues, in an age-appropriate way. He is now nearly 11 and we got this book for him. He giggled a bit about it but when I let him know I'd be glad to talk about any of the chapters with him, I was a little surprised that the first thing he wanted to talk about was the section on girls..... being a boy, we'd been filling him in on what to expect from his own body but forgot that he'd be curious about the "gentler sex". It's been a nice tool and we have left it on the bookshelf in his room. He can peruse it at his own pace and when he's wondering about things, knowing that he can always come to us with questions about anything.

I think it's an informative book that is, like my title suggests, a good conversation starter. It's not a substitute for talking with your kids about sex and the things that happen during puberty and beyond.

We're very happy with this book and it fits our parenting style.

5 out of 5 stars Moms need this! More than dads. Maybe more than sons........2007-04-19

Dads may know all this stuff already, but moms don't have a clue! And moms are the ones who actually explain male anatomy & physiology to their sons. We're the ones who spend the most time with young boys and have the most opportunities to teach. Since we don't have first hand experience, we need factual information.

I have two sons, and learned only from this book, how boys develop and what is typical. I was shocked to learn this information, until you consider that, as a girl, I had no opportunity to learn. And this topic can be so uncomfortable for men, that they don't know this information either. They may be relying on only their personal experience or viewpoints.

I actually consider this one of the most important books a mother can read. This is more important for a son's future self esteem than all those books about the problems of rearing toddlers that mothers are encouraged to read. I feel so strongly about our collective ignorance as mothers that I had to write. In fact, I'm giving this book as a gift to other mothers. Moms need to read this book. Learn something.

5 out of 5 stars Boys need this.......2007-01-13

Boys may be too shy to ask their parents about these issues. This book helps to open the door for further discussion.

What mysterious condition are these now grown-up girls talking about? Ah, yes, puberty! With scads of personal stories and an abundance of useful, detailed information about girls' changing bodies and feelings, author Lynda Madaras and her daughter Area Madaras have expanded their guide for girls on the verge of change. First published in 1983, the bestselling classic has been revised and updated several times over the years to keep up with ever evolving facts and wisdom about puberty in girls. In this third edition, the authors continue their straight talk on the menstrual cycle, reproductive organs, breasts, emotional changes, puberty in boys, body hair, pimples, masturbation, and all the other fun, scary, and interesting things that go along with growing up. Filled with anecdotes, illustrations, diagrams, and honest, sensitive, nonjudgmental information for the young girl, the revised edition also addresses the new scientific facts about when a girl actually begins puberty (earlier than previously thought), advice on "female athletic syndrome," eating disorders, unwanted attention because of early development, and information on eating right, exercise, AIDS, STDs, birth control, and so much more. A welcome, reassuring book for parents and daughters, designed with the understanding that some girls and parents will want to read it together, and some will want to read it on their own; without a doubt, though, all will benefit. 5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and informative.......2007-01-06

When I was nine, I was given this book along with "the talk". While talking is certainly something parents should do with their children to inform them about sex, they should also give them this book. It clearly explains sexuality with a main focus on puberty using small words and fairly large type for easy reading. By the age of twelve I had mostly outgrown this book because of the focus on puberty, so this book is best given earlier. This book also contains a short chapter on what is happening to boys at this age, which was also immensely useful.

As a short aside, I would like to mention that I am horrified by some of these reviews. If you wait to give this book to your daughter, or refrain entirely because it has an illustration of male genitalia, or because it mentions masturbation, or it doesn't promote the religious message of you have to wait until marriage, or that homosexuality is wrong and a sin, that is a bad decision. Children already know about sex from their classmates, and they don't know correct information. Some kids are already having sex at twelve. And if you wait to give this to your child, they won't know how to do it safely. I know you think, "oh, my ________ would NEVER do that". They may. And if they don't by age twelve or thirteen, they still will probably have done something sexual by the time they are sixteen or seventeen. And by the way, if you don't let them see an illustration of male genitalia, they will look it up. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and informative.......2006-10-22

I read this book in fifth grade, and I still remember it to be interesting and informative. Some reviewers have mentioned that it provides too much information for younger readers; at age 11 I personally had no problems with it. Nationwide the trend has become to provide less information in regards to puberty, sex, etc. It's important that teenagers and to-be-teenagers are well-informed, and there is nothing in this book that should be disturbing or traumatizing. As the author suggests in the book, any reader who finds the information to be too thorough may simply skip over the parts irrelevant to her. In addition, readers may always come back to the book at a later date and more mature age, but there is good information in it for the pre-teen set as well.

Overall, I would strongly recommend this book as a factual and informative read. It's also well-written and interesting enough to read in one day.

3 out of 5 stars Way too much information for a young girl.......2006-08-23

I bought this book with the intention of giving it to a girl who just turned 12. Both her mother and I agreed it was way to much information and the illustrations were too graphic for a 12 year-old. The intent of the book is commendable but some parents may take issue with the author's opinions on the subjects covered. It might be better for an older girl but parents/relatives should read the book carefully before handing it over to even a young teenager.

5 out of 5 stars this book I really don't know what to say.......2006-03-31

I'm not finished but i'm already enjoying the book,i'm reading about "All About Having Periods" it's telling me everything about why i'm having headaches. So I just want to say that I want to meet the person that made this book and congratulate her on a splendid job she did with her book, and I really want the next book she wrote. I'm Irwinique Storr and i'm 10 years old and I live in Nassau, Bahamas to say that your book was magnificant. Thank you very much for listening to my review about your book, and I give your book 5 stars for creativity and for helping young girls like us feel safe for whatever happen to our body, my email adress is [...]and I really want you to tell me how you felt about my article so that I could know that you do care about us and our feelings.

Sincerely,

Based on the bestselling classic, What's Happening to My Body? Book for Girls, this workbook uses quizzes, exercises, personal stories, checklists, and other activities to help girls learn about the changes that will take place in their bodies during puberty. What's Happening to My Body? explores these physical and emotional changes in greater detail, but the workbook/journal invites more participation, so that girls can really get involved in the sometimes bewildering, wonderful, and scary transformations that take place as they become women. Written in a peppy, fun style, with a strong emphasis on honest, straightforward discussions, the workbook covers such topics as menstruation, acne, pubic hair, breasts, growing pains, and sex, with such chapter headings as "The Big M," "The Female Sex Organs: An Owner's Manual," and "B.O. and Zits--Is Puberty the Pits?" The information provided and questions asked are smart, sensitive, and highly relevant to girls entering puberty. Questionnaires ask girls to decide what they would do in different situations (Jan's breasts have started to develop, but she lives with her dad and is embarrassed to ask for a bra. What suggestions do you have for Jan?). Women, do you wish someone had given you some remotely useful information when you were an adolescent? Do a girl in your life a favor now and give her My Body, My Self for Girls. And don't worry, boys, there's a workbook for you, too: My Body, My Self for Boys. (Ages 8 to 15) --Emilie Coulter

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-03-31

I bought this book when my daughter was nearing puberty. She used it as a reference guide for several years. It opened the doors to many discussions that would otherwise have been hard to get started. It also fostered open communication between us that continues today. Sometimes she still refers to it. As a conservative mother I approve of this book and would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars My Body, My Self for Girls: Quizbook & Journal.......2007-01-10

This is a fabulous first book for girls who are in puberty or are about to enter puberty. It is appropriate for young adolescents to know more about the physical, mental, social, and emotional changes of puberty. Although this book is excellent in explaining and normalizing body changes, it keeps the topics relevant to younger girls. I gave only the "workbook" to my daughter at age 11 and she actually read it. She seemed to really enjoy the quizzes and exercises. Highly recommended!

I really liked this book and it taught me alot. At my school is was part of thr curriculm(i go to a all girls school) and it really helped to go over it. But it really helped me understand.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book for Us!.......2003-08-09

I've looked at a lot of books and this one is great,! Unlike other books, it does not mention anything about boys, yet. I feel like for a young girl, "Let's learn about your body first" boys later. Also unlike other books, it doesn't go overboard with talking about a first trip to the gynecologist or anything explicit about sex.

I love the workbook idea so you can compare and see where your at and maybe have some fun at guessing what part of puberty is coming next and which order it is going to happen in. Whether, it's big feet, sweating, boobs, or periods.

I bought this for my 1st daughter in 4th or 5th grade. She's 14 now and she still looks at it every now & then just to see where she's at. Now I'm getting a second one for my other daughter who will be entering 5th grade.

I love it so much mostly because it's only about girls and puberty. I don't want to overburden my girls with more than what's going on with themselves at this age. Eduction about boys & girls starts in 6th grade. I've seen plenty of other books, mostly borrowed from the library, and some go too much into detail, including a few that actually talk about "the act" and exactly how boys & girls go together complete with drawings!

    THIS BOOK IS PERFECT!

This was a wonderful. The bit about the horses running in the field of corn was my favourite! Sammy the Lamb was my best character. I hated snoopy the snoop, though.

The title of the first chapter of this workbook, printed in a wavy, spooky font, is "What's Happening to You?" Appropriate, when you think about the emotional and physical changes wrought in a boy's body as he enters puberty. Based on the bestselling classic by mother-daughter team Lynda Madaras and Area Madaras, What's Happening to My Body? Book for Boys, this workbook by the same authors uses games, drawings, photographs, quizzes, personal stories, checklists, and other activities to help boys learn about the transformations that will take place in their bodies during puberty. Similar to the My Body, My Self for Girls workbook, but with a more masculine slant (and obviously, a lot of different information), this is an invaluable resource for boys with questions, curiosity, and a need for reassurance. Topics covered include skin and hair changes, body image, acne, reproductive organs, voice changes, masturbation, and more. Although What's Happening to My Body? explores these issues in greater detail, this workbook enables boys to delve into the nitty-gritty of puberty on a more personal level. One exercise, called "Racewriting," asks boys to write--whatever comes into their heads and as fast as they can--about their feelings about growing up. Then there's the "Test Your I.Q. with This P.Q." true-false puberty quiz. Tremendously useful side features list acne do's and don'ts, ways to cope with erections ("wear baggy pants and long shirts if they keep happening, just remember that it's probably more noticeable to you than to anyone else"), and dangerous side effects of steroids. Written in a lively, nonthreatening style, the authors have placed a strong emphasis on honest, straight talk about the concerns that boys are bound to have as they approach adulthood. 2 out of 5 stars My Body, My Self for Boys: A "What's Happening to My Body?".......2007-02-07

This book although informative read too much like a science book. I would recommend a smaller but just as informative book titled "What's going on Down there? Questions boys are afraid to ask". It was more conversational and answered the tough questions with entertaining cartoons and candor. I would recommend the parent read the book first, then have the child read it, and then they discuss it together.

3 out of 5 stars What's Happening to My Body - book for boys.......2007-09-03

The purpose of the book for me was to read it to a 10 year old boy, to help him understand what was happening to his body and to explain sex and sexual feelings. It is written by someone who taught the subject and rather than have it as a readable book, it's more instructional and explains the author's way of teaching the subject part of the time and then it seems to become more of a book you'd read to a child entering puberty. Some areas are good and detailed and some things are written in a corny way. I would rate the book on a scale of 1 to 10 as maybe a 3. What I've had to do is read a chapter first, and then scan it as I'm explaining it to my 10 year old boy. It does cover the territory.

5 out of 5 stars I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION FOR MY SON.......2000-03-25

ON THE CHANGES THAT HIS BODY IS, AND WILL BE MAKING, IN THE COMING YEARS. As the mother of an eight year old son I found that this book answers questions that he has now as well as things that will come up for the next few years. He was not intimidated by the language nor the subject. The format of the book was excellent and written in a very readable way for boys. The drawings were helpful to him as an adjunct to the written discriptions. I also found that the health aspects were much more stressed than the "sexual" aspects. I appreciate this very much as I feel that this has been neglected in some of the prior books for maturing boys. I am glad that there is a book such as this that i can give to my son with confidance.
