Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary.......2006-12-19

I used to hate lap swimming but now I love it, and it's because of this book. Laughlin has reinvented swim instruction. He's made it fun. He's made it easy. And the resulting stroke is heaven.

The exercises do take some effort and dilligence to master. But if you go slow don't move on until you have mastered each exercise, as instructed, you'll open up a whole new world of swimming enjoyment. I often feel like I'm flying in the water. This former water buffalo now swims like a fish.

Note: there's a brand new Total Immersion book being touted on the TI website, which I haven't read. You may want to look into that, instead. Also, some reviews and TI suggest the DVD as the best method, but that wasn't the case for me. In my case, it was the clear, detailed instructions in the book that made it happen.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but there is a better........2006-11-26

This is a good book for the beginning swimmer, but I would recommend "Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier" over this book. It is by the same author, Terry Laughlin.

4 out of 5 stars DVD is better.......2006-10-25

This has probably been said earlier but instead of purchasing the book, try out the DVD. Words and static pictures go only so far. I found it hard to visualize what you were supposed to do until I saw the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Good resource.......2006-07-27

If I had a partner or a teacher and enough time, I think I could get swimming down much better. I am trying to learn too fast and cannot get the breathing down for the freestyle; going from novice swimmer to doing a 400 meter pool swim in four weeks wasn't enough time for me. The book is great, and I also bought the DVDs, which I found helpful. This is something I have learned that I can't cram, but given enough time I think the book could give me what I need to swim well.

4 out of 5 stars The anatomy of a 2 second manuever...........2006-07-27

Common sense stuff really. Break down a 2 second golf swing and see if you can make it better: although it may make perfect sense, translating the logic into a 2-second manuever probably takes years to make it effortless....

This book and companion DVD are fabulous training tools for any sport requiring speed, quickness and agility. The materials are well organized and very illustrative, allowing you to customize a program for your individual needs. I've read other books like this and have been left wondering sometimes what to do, but these materials are clear and easy to utilize. Whether you're an athlete or a coach, this small investment will pay big dividends.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for any athlete!.......2006-04-08

As a graduate student in the field and a competetive division 1 NCAA volleyball player, I found this book to be a great reference for improving my speed, agility and quickness. The pictures, explanations and DVD made it easy to incorperate proper form into each drill.
I would feel comfortable referring this book to anyone who wants to improve their game regardless of their sport or level of experience.
This is a great book, one that I will keep in my library forever.

Product Description

Contemporary sport bikes accelerate faster, brake harder, and cut through corners deeper than ever before. These technologically advanced motorcycles are exhilarating to ride, but to really get the most out of a motorcycle’s performance capabilities a rider must develop his or her own personal performance. Riders need to take their skills to the next level. Now, in this book written specifically for sport riders, well-known journalist, racer, and riding school instructor Nick Ienatsch provides the tools and techniques to help riders analyze and develop that personal performance. If you’re an experienced rider, Nick will help you hone and perfect your skills, operate controls with even greater finesse, and apply race-proven techniques on the track—as well as on the street. If you’re a beginning rider, Nick will show you how to develop proper skills and safety habits that will add to your motorcycling enjoyment and build your confidence. Whatever your current riding ability, Nick will teach you to safely find the absolute limit of bike and rider.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You need it.....read it!.......2007-10-08

This book should be mandatory for every sportbike rider. It starts off with the basics and gets into the meat of more advanced techniques to become a better rider on the street or racetrack. After mastering Nick's writings, get your hands on Andy Ibbott's "Performance Riding Techniques." Between these two books, you will have the best material on the market for advancing your riding skills to a significantly higher level. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Book.......2007-09-28

I have read this book several times and implemented the techniques on 1000 miles of twisties in the Colorado mountains this past August. It made a huge difference in my riding. It's nice to know the proper techniques and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Will make anyone a better rider.......2007-09-27

Being a motocross rider for the last 35 years, I thought I would have no problems when I decided to become a street rider also. Even though I felt comfortable right away on my new road bike, after reading Nick's book it all clicked..! I now ride safer, more in control, and when it comes time to tear up the twisties, I'm having more fun on my bike than I could have imagined..! Thanks Nick, great book.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As Twist of the Wrist 2.......2007-09-13

Very solid book on high performance motorcycle riding techniques. Covers all the major aspects, as well as offers numerous drills that can convert the correct techniques into muscle memory. I rate this book as highly as the iconic Twist of the Wrist 2 by Keith Code. A must read if you ride a sports bike.

5 out of 5 stars The title of the book says it all.......2007-07-26

Excellent book. It leans a little more to the mechanical and physics of the ride than "Total Control" does. Glad I bought it.
As your experience develops, more truths in the book will reveal themselves.

Book Description

What if there was a secret ingredient that could make every single one of your martial arts techniques better? Not only faster and more powerful, but more likely to slam home to exactly the right target every time. Maybe there is.

Timing is the art and science of ending a confrontation as quickly and efficiently as possible. In Timing for the Fighting Arts, authors Loren W. Christensen and Wim Demeere team up to teach you exactly how to get every last ounce of speed and power out of your techniques. Already strong and lightning fast? Prepare to get even better.

Whether you want to feel safer on the street or emerge victorious in the ring, this book is packed with inside information essential to defeating your opponent:

* Why many experts say timing is more important than speed

* How to put the OODA loop and Hick's law to work for you

* Why timing is both an offensive and defensive asset

* Which types of verbal distraction can give you the edge

* Why controlling your opponent's spine gives you an advantage

* Which tournament techniques really do work on the street

* How to set up multiple opponents to create timing opportunities

* Which tricks law enforcement officers rely on to buy time
* How you can improve your odds against a gun or knife

* Why timing is one of the most important things you can add to your training

Every one of these concepts is backed up by drills and practice scenarios so you can go beyond theory and put your knew knowledge to work in the ring or on the street where you need it most. If you're ready to take your skills to the next level, Loren and Wim are ready to show you the way.

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas - not so good techniques.......2007-01-04

Not a bad book. it gave me lots to think about in my training.
the concepts contained in the book are excellent - some of the techniques they talk about and demonstrate (in pictures) seem a bit old school. without testing them and practicing them it is all just theory anyway.
got to practice this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Turn the autopilot off.......2006-05-01

Yes.. that's basically the main message of this book. Don't fight blindly.

The last chapter is loaded with series of drills that can sharpen your timing and fighting "instinc", while the earlier chapters are full with wonderful information to give you complete understanding of what fighting is all about, and why timing is important.

Just a word caution,
I often get lost reading those earlier chapters. The authors were very generous in providing us with details and examples that sometime we forget the main theme of the chapter we are reading (also because those details are written in very engaging and absorbing tone).

Wonderful book.
I am glad that I bought it...

5 out of 5 stars A guide for intermediate to advanced martial artists.......2006-01-13

Timing in the Fighting Arts is a guide for intermediate to advanced martial artists, from boxing professionals to ordinary men and women honing their skills for self-defense. Written by two expert martial artists, both with extensive experience in police work, Timing in the Fighting Arts covers everything from Hick's Law (that reaction time increases the more choices one has - therefore it's faster and more effective to have one simple defense than a dozen complex ones) to improving one's posture to approaching a potentially dangerous person and timing a grab, to "need-to-know" information - and debunked myths - about translating sport fighting to a street situation. A wealth of recommended drills and exercises for physical self-improvement round out this valuable supplementary self-defense resource.

5 out of 5 stars It's about time!.......2005-05-13

Face it, there are only so many hammers you can fit in a toolbox: they're all useless if the nail pounds you before you can pound it. Plenty of books tell you "what" and "how", this book tells you "WHEN" and if you don't have the opportunity it shows you how to make it happen NOW.

You will learn to create and exploit windows of opportunity in the real world and on the mat. It's not some woo-woo discussion of "timing" over too many cold ones. Techniques and examples are drawn from the experience of the authors BOTH outside and inside the dojo. They have found these to work for them, and you can make them work for you.

Christensen's extensive background as a cop and Demeere's background as both a bouncer (doorman) and ring competitor fit together to present a bigger picture than you might be getting from your dojo alone.

Both authors are long time students and instructors of the martial arts. If you are a dojo enthusiast who is looking for a bigger picture than the one you are getting in school, or looking for an introduction to pragmatic or "reality based self-defense", but find yourself put off by the frequent disrespect for the martial arts, then this book is a good choice for you. It covers similar ground to other books, but the authors do it without feeling the need to tell you that all your training is useless. In fact, they build on your training to help you get more out of it, and it's all done with timing in mind.

You also get pointers to further reading on topics that are covered only in brief and many cool new drills. I like the "statue" one especially, maybe you will too.

Book Description

Here is the amazing story of Kiwi motorcycling legend, backyard engineering genius, and land speed record holder Burt Munro. Munro was the archetypal eccentric inventor. He took an original Indian motorbike and modified it in his shed so it became capable of extreme speeds. From small town New Zealand in the 1920s to heroic accomplishments in the USA, Munro was still inventing up until his death in 1978. This is very much a "little guy beats the odds" story-Munro still holds several records in the US-as a mark of respect, the category he raced in was "frozen" for all time. The publication of the book has been timed to coincided with the movie The World's Fastest Indian, directed by Roger Donaldson and starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, scheduled for release October 2005.

Tim Hanna, the author, has nailed the essence of both Burt Munro and late '60s hot rodding. This book is delightful in its exposition of what it's like to follow a dream, even into old age. It's a treatise on just being yourself, without pandering to society. It's about learning to talk to people to win them over. It's about doing with your own hands what "the experts" say can't be done.

If ever there was an opposite to "chick lit" this is truly it.

Book Description

"You don't have to run fast to be a real runner!"

John Bingham, "the patron saint of the back of the pack," commands "The Penguin Brigade"-- those thousands of dedicated runners who have learned that the greatest joy in their sport comes not from how fast they go or how thin they become, but from simply having the courage to take the first step.

Now Bingham shares the wisdom that took him from couch potato to columnist for Runner's World magazine. No Need for Speed explores both the why and the how of running for the rest of us. With information both practical (how to find the right running shoes for you, when to enter a race, what to eat before a run) and inspirational (focus on where you are instead of where you want to be, accepting the body you have, the beauty of being realistic about goals), Bingham extends a trusted hand and expert advice to beginners and veterans alike.

5 out of 5 stars Just what the chubby girl ordered!.......2007-05-19

Bottom-line...if you're out of shape and always dreamed of running, but could never figure out how to begin, then this is the book for you. John is kind, gentle, honest, and he gives all the right information to feed your motivation, no matter how far back in your mind and heart it may be.

4 out of 5 stars Tri Prep.......2006-11-10

I am planning on running (swimming, and bikeing) my first Triathlon this spring. I've read many books as I prepare. This book has been great with motivation to keep going. The walk/run approach is really great. I know it isn't new, but it helps to keep reading it in more than one place. Most of the books I have read agree with this author, however this author has been easier to read. Along with all the helpful instructions there is a humor that I have enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars No Need for Speed got me running!.......2006-11-10

I love this book. I find it inspiring, helpful and I can really relate to the personal stories of perserverance against all potato chips, TV programs and 43 years of slothfulness....It gave me the courage to keep going as younger, fitter, faster runners sprint by me. And I can now be content just to run, even though I may never break a 10min mile....it's the process not the goal that matters.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for the beginning (or returning) runner.......2006-11-09

I've recently started back to running and needed something to read to help motivate me. I'd already read Dean Karnazes' book and was looking for something that would talk not just about the practical aspects of beginning to run, but more about the life change that is necessary to successfully make running a part of your life. This book talks about that, and focuses on it, and encourages the reader. We limit ourselves by our self perceptions, and this book will help you break through a few of those. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars BEST RUNNING MOTIVATOR.......2006-07-05

Of all the running books out there, from by-the-numbers training plans to dense physiology tomes, none provide the uplift and motivation needed by average "non-athletic" mortals better than the two written by John Bingham. In his newest, Bingham, long associated with his "Penguin" philosophy through Runner's World Magazine, inspires with his personal story. Only this isn't an Olympic athlete's heroic quest, but an average, vice-ridden everyman's transformation from overweight couch potato to athlete. In a conversational, non-preachy tone, Bingham writes for the majority of runners and fitness walkers-- the back two-thirds of every road race.
No Need for Speed contains much useful and up-to-date advice for beginning and intermediate runners and walkers, of course, including equipment, training and technique. Frequent sidebar entries from real citizen-runners also share lessons learned by average joes and janes while morphing into athletes. But by far the BEST thing about this book, and the most encouraging to newer, older, heavier, and/or slower runners, is that Bingham manages to legitimately drape honor and glory to "back of the pack" athletes. You don't have to be lightning-fast or whippet-thin to call yourself a runner. To anyone stuggling to get in shape, survive a road race (or finish it in less than a day), and feel good about being in the game, Bingham's words are priceless.

Find the answers to these and scores of other frequently asked questions in All About Powerboats. Writing for any boater seeking a better understanding of modern powerboat design and handling, author Roger Marshall provides a well-illustrated, clear introduction to small powerboats (18 to 30 feet long) from the perspective of use. 5 out of 5 stars not for everyone ... a good thing.......2007-07-24

this book is for serious, but not too serious, boaters. for me it opened the door to understanding why certain hull designs do diffeent things, why different marine engine technologies offer different advantages and disadvantages. I wish I had read it before I bought my first boat. But then again, now I know enough to appreciate the depth of understanding on the pages of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Learn how hull shapes affect performance.......2007-01-05

If you are thinking about building a boat from plans, or even designing a boat on your own, it's important to understand how the shape of a hull moves through the water. This book gives an in depth, non-mathematical description of hull performance.

It covers many hull shapes and describes ideal conditions and speeds for each type. This is a must-have for anyone seriously thinking about building a boat. It will give you a better appreciation of the boat that is really right for you. And, for the price, you can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Very recommendable.......2006-03-21

It is a very interesting book, for people begining in the boat field.
Very easy to understand, without technical fireworks.
I strongly recommend it for beginers or not technical background persons

2 out of 5 stars I was not able to obtain the information that I needed........2004-12-04

I brought this book because I needed to work out if a particular boat with a particular outboard would meet certain performance parameters under certain sea conditions.
I was not able to do this with the information in this book.
I found "Propellor Handbook" by Dave Gerr much more usefull.

Book Description

In eighth grade Kevin Schuler is a popular kid with a decent, if not stellar, record on the track. Yet after fate takes him off a bus that crashes and kills his fellow students, including his girlfriend, Kevin inexplicably becomes a track phenomenon. Separated from his memory and distanced from his own life, he effortlessly smashes records and gains national attention, until he finds that he can no more remain apart from himself than he can from the ground beneath his feet.

5 out of 5 stars Introspective and humble.......2007-09-12

"Introspective and humble," of course, refers to the narrator. The author, on the other hand, seems a tiny bit in love with his creation - and for good reason. Jackson's writing aims high and often exceeds its target. It can be best described as: gentle, wry, uplifting, mellow, and/or lonely. His characters manage to display the depth and thoughtfulness one rarely finds in teenagers while remaining realistic, a feat of writing to be applauded. Jackson eschews the typical route of finding poignancy and conflict in his protagonist's battle with his body. Instead, Kevin's running takes the passenger seat, and the heart of the story emerges from his struggles with his memories and his grief. We never learn exactly why Kevin changed so completely after his teammates' deaths. It's okay, though. I like wondering.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother!!.......2007-05-24

I'm a runner. I thought I would enjoy reading a book about someone who shares this passion but I was quite wrong. Jacksons writing style bothered me from the first page and I feel purchasing this book was a waste of money. I'm highly dissapointed with this.

5 out of 5 stars Hometown Connection.......2006-03-08

Once I picked up this book I just couldn't put it down until I was finished! Having grown up in the same town as the author and particpating on the same track team, this book just formed an intriguing connection with my past. Jeremy did an excellent job developing his character and a story that appeals to just about anyone who participates in this occupation called life.

4 out of 5 stars Life at These Speeds.......2005-10-26

I loved the book. It seemed though that it caught attention to most track team members. Im not in track but i enjoyed the book but through some parts of the book I had trouble getting through it. It seemed to go slow for me like it was too drawn out. The author did an exellent Job connecting Kevin with teens around the states.

4 out of 5 stars Running From Tragedy.......2005-02-21

Kevin Schuler, the high school running star in "Life at These Speeds," has to be one of the most aloof first-person narrators I've ever experienced. While frustrating at times, this narrative technique forced me to experience the same nearly-maddening difficulty establishing an emotional connection with Kevin as do his friends and family in the novel. The result is a powerful depiction of a psychologically fractured adolescent's struggle to overcome a tragic experience and reawaken his dormant emotional core.

While running pervades this novel and the author clearly has an affinity for the sport, success on the track is not central to the conflict. Indeed, running becomes for Kevin the ultimate escape mechanism, through which he's able to while away his adolescent hours and achieve admiration among his peers while avoiding his repressed trauma. Kevin rarely, if ever, seems in jeopardy of failure on the track, as if the emotional trauma he has sustained is so brutal that he's become completely numbed to the discomfort associated with the intense training sessions and record-breaking performances that he ticks off with ease. This lack of emotion is effective in a literary sense, yet it renders the descriptions of training and racing somewhat hollow.

All in all, this is a strong novel with sufficient depth to satisfy the literary crowd and enough track and cross-country content to please readers of running fiction.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars very repetative, and not what I thought it would be........2007-06-27

Read the book over vacation, the info it gives you is great but a lot of it only works if you actually drive a Formula or Sport Racer Vehicle. Lots of info about tracks and courses, how to get the ideal line in an apex, and how to drive smoothly and fast gain control, then it repeats itself again, so this makes an illusion that there are a lot of secrets even though he is just repeating it using different verbiage. This is a great book for advanced racers that understand the concept and terminology of F1 type races and it helps you prepare for a F1 race too but for an average driver trying to learn the ropes this book might be to hard and doesn't help much with everyday driving since a lot of the techniques is for driving above 150mph and plus F1 has totally different suspension systems and steering systems then regular sport cars so if you try it it might feel weird. You learn the heal toe move which I have been trying to get for a while, very detailed and lots of graphs, data charts, and drawings. I personally had to skip some chapters because I was not interested tracks, officials, and what they do with the flags, and some more stuff because a lot of it does not apply to me as I do not own a formula car or race professionally in such a track they described, but I did read about perfect turning and control plus weight transfer and how to keep that center of gravity which helps me in the real world of driving on the streets. I feel that I am going a lot faster in my car by being able to turn safely yet not slowing my car down to much where it would take longer to accelerate plus I have been able to drive fast yet so smooth that my mom fell asleep the whole time as I drove her. So i was really happy with that info. I am a mechanic and I test race clients vehicles at the track, my average speed is 140mph so you know my point of view

5 out of 5 stars TRACK TIME.......2007-06-11

This book is an absolute must for any novice or even intermediate racer. I race karts often and bought this book recently to enhance my skills.
Within a week of reading this book I have already dropped more than a FULL SECOND off my lap times!!! MUST READ MATERIAL!

5 out of 5 stars Race Car Resource.......2007-04-10

Any gearhead should read this book about racing. Learn what race car drivers do while on the circuit and find out about car modifications.

5 out of 5 stars My review of an excellent book.......2007-02-27

This book is an absolute must read for any gear head. Whether your planning to race professionally, or just moddifing your daily driver. This book will change your entire view on racing, and will affect your daily drivig habbits.

The book also goes over different aspects of your suspension, what each component does, and how altering them will affect the cars handling.

After reading this book I have been more focused on driving smoothly, and being more precise with the controls. Already, I can see the positive effects on my driving style.

Note however, that this book is written for racing, so some information may not apply to daily driven vehicles, e.g. shifting without the clutch

4 out of 5 stars A great primer on racing........2007-01-26

This book is an excellent introduction to what race car drivers do, why they do it, and how they do it. Before I read this book, all I knew about car racing was "race cars go around a track real fast". Now I know about the apex, under/oversteer, scrubbing off speed, trail braking, and finding the line. There's also penty of info on suspension tuning if I ever feel like spending the bucks to have it done.

I am so happy I read this book prior to my first autocross event in my 911. I able to take the concepts explained in the book and immediately apply them to the course I was racing. And I beat my big-mouth buddy by 1/10th of a second. Sweeeeeeeeeet.
