Book Description

The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health assembles into a single volume a quarter-century's worth of hard-won knowledge about men's health -- knowledge that men need to lead longer, healthier lives.

More than twenty-five years ago, researchers at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health began what have become the largest aggregate studies ever of men's health. Tracking 96,000 American men over decades, these studies provide the ultimate resource on what keeps men healthy -- and what doesn't. The result is The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health:

• Features the most current information on the health-preserving functions of diet, exercise, and over-the-counter drugs and supplements

• Gives straight answers to questions like when drinking alcohol is beneficial and when it's not

• Offers advice on behavior modification and stress control

• Includes all the crucial information on diseases that are particularly

important to men, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, erectile dysfunction, and kidney and bladder problems

• Provides an easy-to-navigate guide to the health-care system that gives balanced views on the benefits and drawbacks of common medical tests

With the authority that only the world's largest and best-known medical school can provide, and the lively, clear presentation that is the hallmark of Harvard Men's Health Watch, the monthly newsletter edited by Dr. Simon, The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health is an essential reference for every man -- and for everyone who cares about a man's health.

5 out of 5 stars Bladder cancer from smoking?.......2006-03-19

Life saving information is in this very well written book. I learned smokers can develop bladder cancer besides the norm such as heart disease. Get this book if you are past 40 and/or avoid seeing a doctor for checkups. There are many easy to read articles in this book which you may feel too embrassed to discuss with your doctor.

5 out of 5 stars The best men's medical reference book.......2004-07-01

This is an excellent medical reference book for men. The information is very well organized into three separate parts: 1) what makes men different, 2) what makes men healthy, and 3) men's main diseases, how to prevent them, test for them, and treat them. The book is quite long at 470 pages. But, it reads easily. And, it makes for an excellent medical reference to go back to when you want specific scientific information on various men's health topics.

The best part about the book is that it is based on extensive medical studies. The advice provided is the result of statistically significant conclusions derived from these studies. Thus, the objectivity, integrity, and intelligence derived from this book is so much greater than from any of the medical authors positioning themselves as the current diet or health care guru.

The book confirms the value of EFV. The ultimately healthy lifestyle consists of a lot of Exercise with a diet that includes lots of Fruits and Vegetables. These three factors (exercise, fruits, vegetables) appear to be universal protectors against all age related diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Similarly, the high risk factors regardless of the health risk considered seemed to be always the same, including: smoking, obesity, lack of exercise, lots of saturated fats and trans fats in the diet.

The book has a ton of information besides the self-evident basics mentioned above. There are lots of tables, graphs, and summaries that make the information easy to retrieve. These include info on BMI, PSA test levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, recommended frequencies of screening tests, recommended dosage and toxic levels of vitamins and minerals, Glycemic index, life expectancy charts, and lots more interesting stuff.

With the medical knowledge derived from this book, you will be in a far better position to take care of your health and initiate a mutually productive dialogue with your general practitioners and specialists. The World is getting increasingly complex. Technology and science evolve rapidly. Nowhere does this increasing complexity have a greater impact than on healthcare. This book will help you understand your health, risk factors, relevant testing, and cures to be considered.

As we age, we will invariably be faced with some challenging options and decisions. This book is a great road map to help us out along the way. If you are well informed, it takes a lot of anxiety out of the equation. That takes care of a major health risk already [stress and anxiety]. This book is good for you!

Along the same line of excellent health related information, I also strongly recommend another great book from Harvard Health Publications: "Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy" by Walter C. Willett. It is the best book on diet and nutrition I have ever read. And, that is also because it is based on scientific studies, and not on subjective opinions from egocentric blowhards.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2002-12-17

This book is packed with information on men's health. It covers everything from diet and exercise, through men's maladies (prostate, bladder and problems of the genitals). It covers everything in an easy-to-understand manner that includes many charts and diagrams. In particular I appreciated the section on exercise and stretching, and have revamped my exercise regimen based on this book. I am glad I got this book, and recommend it to all men.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Men!.......2002-11-17

My husband I found this book to be very informative. The material was presented in a lucid and engaging fashion. We found the chapters on diet, exercise, and prostate especially helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A Helpful Guide to Men's Health.......2002-11-04

I got the book to restore peace to my health club workouts. As my friends have turned 50, many have been asking "Dr. Joel" about prostate cancer. I'd be glad to answer, but it's not exactly my end of the body, since I'm a dentist. I read the two chapters on prostate cancer, but then I went back to read the rest of the book. I don't want to be an instant expert, but I now have a quick answer to all of the questions: read The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health for yourself. It's really an excellent book.

Aimed at nothing less than totally restructuring the diets of Americans, Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy may well accomplish its goal. Dr. Walter C. Willett gets off to a roaring start by totally dismantling one of the largest icons in health today: the USDA Food Pyramid that we all learn in elementary school. He blames many of the pyramid's recommendations--6 to 11 servings of carbohydrates, all fats used sparingly--for much of the current wave of obesity. At first this may read differently than any diet book, but Willett also makes a crucial, rarely mentioned point about this icon: "The thing to keep in mind about the USDA Pyramid is that it comes from the Department of Agriculture, the agency responsible for promoting American agriculture, not from the agencies established to monitor and protect our health." It's no wonder that dairy products and American-grown grains such as wheat and corn figure so prominently in the USDA's recommendations.

Willett's own simple pyramid has several benefits over the traditional format. His information is up-to-date, and you won't find recommendations that come from special-interest groups. His ideas are nothing radical--if we eat more vegetables and complex carbohydrates (no, potatoes are not complex), emphasize healthy fats, and enjoy small amounts of a tremendous variety of food, we will be healthier. You'll find some surprises as well, such as doubts about the overall benefits of soy (unless you're willing to eat a pound and a half of tofu a day), and that nuts, with their "good" fat content, are a terrific snack. Relying on research rather than anecdotes, this is a solidly written nutritional guide that will show you the real story behind how food is digested, from the glycemic index for carbs to the wisdom of adding a multivitamin to your diet. Willett combines research with matter-of-fact language and a no-nonsense tone that turns academic studies into easily understandable suggestions for living. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Pyramid is one of the most recognizable icons in America today, seen everywhere from the backs of cereal boxes to elementary school displays to graduate school textbooks. Millions of Americans try to eat six to eleven servings of grains daily, three servings of milk or cheese, and so on. You may be one of them.

Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy tells you why the pyramid is wrong. Not merely wrong, but wildly wrong. And not just wildly wrong, but even dangerous. Most important, the book provides a new one in its place, a new food pyramid derived from decades of research by Harvard Medical School and Harvard's School of Public Health. In Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy, Dr. Walter Willett, one of the world's most distinguished experts on nutrition, tells you why eggs are not the poison the public has been taught, and why some margarines are a lot worse than you thought. He tells you why the oil in a potato chip can be better for you than the potato, tells you what is good about nuts and bad about too much milk. Dr. Willett builds a general set of dietary guidelines that makes sense out of the welter of conflicting nutritional advice bombarding us daily -- not merely from the USDA, but from books and physicians preaching everything from banishing carbohydrates to ultra lowfat diets. He shows how none of this nutritional advice has prevented an epidemic of obesity in America today.

Based on research gleaned from the world-famous Nurses' Health Study, the Physicians' Health Study, and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study -- studies that tracked hundreds of thousands of people for more than twenty years -- and supported by dozens of other surveys and investigations, Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy offers eye-opening new research on the healthiest forms of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, and the relative importance of various food groups and supplements. You'll learn why weight control is the single most important nutritional factor and what the three other critical factors of healthy eating are. You'll find out how to choose wisely between different types of fats, which combinations of fruits and vegetables provide the best health insurance, and how to integrate these into your daily diet. You'll even find specific advice for diabetics, people with hypertension, pregnant women, and nursing mothers. And all of it is translated into simple menu plans and more than fifty tasty recipes that make utilizing the new food pyramid a pleasure.

Unique and authoritative, Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy will teach everyone a new and fun way to eat.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best guide to healthy eating.......2007-09-16

Willett's book isn't a fad diet book, but explains food and what it does for your body. I thought this book was very informative. It set some diet myths straight. There was a good overview of the food groups, the pros and cons of each, and what diseases or illnesses they helped or hurt. I thought the vitamin section was very good and surprisingly brief for that sort of thing.

5 out of 5 stars Good common sense advice on nutrition.......2007-08-13

I have been saying almsot nothing but good about this book to my friends and family for the last week or two. I read this book once and then had to read it again because it is packed with such good common sense advice which is backed up with explinations about major studies confirming the advice.

Willet starts out with nothing less then suggesting major changes to the food guide pyrimid. The next chapters delve into the reasons for these changes. He explains in more depth about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight, choosing carbs low on the glycemic index, the need for unsaturated fats in the diet, the importance of eating low fat protiens, and the need to eat many fruits and vegtables (not potatoes)daily. Much of the book seems to agree with the mediterranean diet and He refers a few times to the "seven countries study" done by Ancel Keys who was an early proponent of this diet. I was curious to see how the diet worked for Keys and found he lived to be 100 years old!

The book is a treasure and I will refer to it often in the future. One note, some of the recepies and ingredients in the back are difficult to prepare or hard to come by. But don't let this stop you from reading this book and making changes to your diet. It has inspired me to make changes to mine.

5 out of 5 stars Authoritative advice without any gimmicks.......2007-08-05

There's no shortage of "diet" books out there, so how do you choose the right one? The truth is, it's difficult. I've come to the conclusion that almost any diet can "work" (at least in the short term), because what they do is force you to think about what you're eating and motivate you to exercise. However, where gimmick diets fail is in changing your lifestyle.

This book is an entirely different breed of "diet" books, because it's not really a diet book at all. What it is is conservative, non-controversial, and authoritative advice regarding healthy eating. Nothing in this book is going to go out of style any time soon.

There's no gimmick here; it's not going to tell you that you can eat sausage all day and be healthy. It's going to tell you what you already know; eat more greens, veggies, fish, fruit, and whole grains. It's going to tell you that there's no secret to losing wait; eat fewer calories and exercise more. It's going to tell you that the knowledge of the glycemic index/load is useful for controlling your appetite by moderating blood sugar. It's going to explain that there's a big difference between good fats and bad. It's going to tell you that the Mediterranean-style diet is well known for being one of the healthiest in the world (and why).

I've actually read a couple dozen books on healthy eating. All of the others had a few good things to say, but had some sort of gimmick to sell the book. This book is more or less the intersection of all those other books. In the end, this is the best of the bunch and absolutely the one to get if you only want to read one book on healthy eating.

However, this book may not be for everyone. Some people may be put off by the conservative nature of this book. If you have special health concerns that aren't addressed by mainstream knowledge, or if you are the type of person that prefers to live on the bleeding edge, you may need to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to understand your health.......2007-07-09

I very much enjoyed this book. I have spent my entire life on a diet but never understood the meaning behind diet rules and theories. This was a great read on nutrition and really helped me to understand the medical implications of the food choices we make. The author did a great job simplifying complex medical terms and provided a balanced thoughtful view on eating, drinking and being healthy.

5 out of 5 stars great advice.......2007-06-25

very good guidelines and recipes are delicious. no FDA-approved diet pill is ever going to change our increasing waistlines, and no one will ever make it easy for us. the food industry is absolutely disgusting in US, from high fructose corn syrup to fake sweeteners. well, at least lets all be thankful we have enough food to keep us fat, but we also have the option of not following the herd like sheep, and actually make out own choices regarding what we eat.

If you have one medical reference in your home, the Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide is the one to have. For years I used the highly technical Merck Manual, along with the AMA Home Medical Encyclopedia. Excuse the Goldilocks allusion but one was "too hard" and the other "too soft." The Harvard guide is "just right." The organization of the book allows for easy navigation. The symptom charts are very helpful and lead you to appropriate sections on diseases and disorders. You learn enough about your health issues and possible treatments to visit your doctor as an informed patient with the right questions. Excellent illustrations and photographs enhance the text. Kudos to the writers and editors for giving us a truly useful guide.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-02

I liked this book because it was the only book I could find with real information about artificial sweeteners. It seemed to be up to date and it gave the info understood from the most current research.

4 out of 5 stars Good Source.......2006-11-05

I read this book cover to cover and to be honest, I don't think I learned anything new. In fact there is surprisingly little time devoted to actually how/what to eat! It seems like most of the book is devoted to the idea that how you eat during pregnancy will affect your child's health later in life. So if you need motivation to reach for the veggies everyday, this would be a great book to read. But overall it's the same tips about what to avoid, eat from the food pyramid, etc. Having said that, I gave it four stars because even though the information isn't new, it feels good to get it from a reputable source since half the stuff you read, it's hard to tell if you can trust it. Additionally, there are some wonderful, easy, healthy recipes at the end of the book!

5 out of 5 stars The bottom line: Get ready for baby!.......2006-07-04

Kudos to Dr. Walker on the second publication (although I wish I had this one first!) on health and wellness for mothers and their babies.

This 'easy-to-ingest' book is an excellent resource for information on what to eat, what to avoid, and even includes tips on exercise and creative recipes for snack and mealtimes.

Take care of yourself, and take care of your baby!
