5 out of 5 stars Walking is good for you........2007-09-20

This cd is worth it's weight in gold. It has a great beat for anyone to walk to and is easy to follow. It gives encouragement and actually times the walk out. It's informative and most of all...not boring. The second half of the cd give you something to work towards. It's a great cd.

2 out of 5 stars Elevator music with a beat.......2007-03-11

I need a more pronounced beat in my walking, and music that's easier to listen to, or at least doesn't make me feel like I'm in the elevator going up to see the cardiologist instead of trying to postpone the visit for a few years.

5 out of 5 stars Healthy Heart Walking CD.......2007-02-20

A very well thought out CD. I feel as if there is a coach with me every step of the way.

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes basic is best...........2006-04-22

I have many walking tapes, but sometimes I just want the encouragement without all the blather. This CD set a very nice pace, and I found Rita "speaking up" periodically helped to keep me focus when I started to drift off. One advantage to this over my iPod playlist is sometimes the music beat is too fast, and I'll get so caught up in the increased tempo that I risk straining something. I bought 2 more copies for family members.

1 out of 5 stars The Healthy Heart Walking CD.......2006-02-25

This was a waste of money. I wish I could exchange it for a more effective CD.

Ever find yourself debating whether or not to buy just one bag of chips? Or grab a little candy bar for the road? Consider this: what if the nutritional labels on your favorite foods spelled out exactly what you'd have to do to burn those calories?

Well, nutrition and public health advocate, Charles Stuart Platkin's new book, THE DIET DETECTIVE'S COUNT DOWN, is the first of its kind that translates food into exercise, giving readers a tool for deciding what a calorie means and which calories are worth it.

All this information is listed in an easy to view table format. The table also includes calories, fat and carbohydrates.

This is no ordinary diet book, it is a food fact bible giving readers tasty nuggets of information that make them think before they eat. Translating food into calorie counts isn't enough -- translating calorie counts into exercises makes clear the consequence each bite has on the waistline!

This book was purchased as a gift. Recipient has used it to balance food intake and exercise, and has found it very helpful.

4 out of 5 stars The Diet Detective's Count Down.......2007-05-15

My friend was looking for this book so I found it and ordered it. I was skeptical at first but now I am glad I ordered it because I can look up a food and see if I really want to eat it or something else by how much walking (my choice of exercise) I have to do to work off the calories. It really comes in handy when I get a craving for the bad stuff like ice cream or mcdonald....

5 out of 5 stars Mystery solved.......2007-03-25

Have you ever wanted to know how long it will take you to burn off the calories in that pizza or cake you want to splurge on? This book will tell you.

5 out of 5 stars The Diet Dective's Count Down: 7500 of Your Favorite Food Counts with Their Exercise Equivalents.......2007-03-24

What an eye-opener! This is perhaps the most helpful guide I have ever seen in understanding how calories add up, and how much energy and effort it takes to burn off those calories. Just a little nibble here, and a little nibble there, and suddenly you're faced with running two miles in order to compensate for the calorie overload. Even just "sharing a dessert" when eating out can add up to miles of walking and swimming!

As a sober reminder of how much extra exercise I would have to do offset certain foods and snacks at home, I created a list using the information in the book of the exercise equivalent of things like cheese, dips, mayo, bread, ice cream, butter, etc.

The author also offers excellent weight management advice and guidance. This book could easily have had
another title: "The Calorie Saving Bible For People Who Hate To Exercise."

5 out of 5 stars Think Of Calories, Carbs In Terms of Exercise.......2007-02-19

Have you ever caught yourself thinking about how long it would take you to burn off a meal you had just eaten, especially one that was not very healthy? Maybe you have, maybe not. I know I have after splurging on an Apple Cinnamon Fruit Filled Pancakes meal at Denny's. Those 1,080 calories and 106g carbohydrates I just consumed will take me over 4 1/2 hours on the treadmill to walk it off! Yikes! I think I'll skip that meal from now on. :)

How did I know about this wonderful tidbit of nutritional knowledge? I owe it all to syndicated health columnist Charles Stuart Platkin and his new book The Diet Detective's Count Down. This handy-dandy little guide to 7500 different foods provides you with a quick-reference exercise equivalent to just about any food that will cross your lips.

That's right! No more excuses that you didn't know a food was bad for you because you had absolutely no concept about the amount of calories you were putting in your mouth. That's why the idea of seeing what you eat in the amount of time it would take you to burn it off is a revolutionary one. Platkin says he would love to see this information appear on restaurant menus and on nutritional labels.

What a concept! How many people would scarf down an entire cup of gumdrops if they knew they would have to do more than four hours of yoga just to burn them off?! Not too many people I would dare say. And that's what I love about The Diet Detective's Count Down because it makes people start thinking of calories in terms of exercise which is a lot more tangible and realistic. Calories can be mysterious, but exercise is very real!

Before I lost over 180 pounds on the Atkins diet in 2004, I would regularly consume a whole box of Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls in one sitting! I know, I know, that was pretty stupid. But had I known at the time that I would have to shake my fat butt dancing for over 4 1/2 hours to keep those calories from turning into stored fat in my blubbery self, then I probably would have thought twice about doing that. Again, the Diet Detective as come to the rescue!

Despite the unique concept of thinking about the calories of the foods you eat and their "exercise equivalent," you can also learn about the actual number of calories, carbs, and fat grams with The Diet Detective's Count Down. For those who are genuinely interested in the exercise they will need to do to burn off their desired morsel of caloric goodness, though, Platkin shows you very clearly how many minutes it will take you to move your body either walking, running, biking, swimming, yoga, or dancing. You choose the exercise you enjoy the most and start working off those calories.

The bottom line is, as Olivia Newton-John sang about in the 1980s, let's get physical and start learning that exercise is an extremely important component not only in weight loss, but also in weight maintenance and health management. Thinking of food by how much time you will need to workout is one way to help you make better choices about what to eat in the first place. It's something Platkin refers to as a "calorie bargain"--finding a lower-calorie or low-carb replacement food for that oh-so-favorite one you think you can't live without.

Platkin said former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who lost over 100 pounds on a low-carb diet just like me, traded his favorite sugary 550-calorie premium ice cream habit for a 250-calorie Splenda-sweetened low-carb ice cream instead. This savings of 300 calories helped Gov. Huckabee shed the pounds and avoid that extra one hour of swimming it would have taken to burn off his preferred dessert. That's the power of taking control of your diet once and for all.

Of course, these exercise numbers will vary from person to person based on the specific height and weight of the individual. The standard used for The Diet Detective's Count Down was a 155-pound person who is walking 3 mph, running 5 mph, bicycling nearly 12 mph, swimming laps, participating in Hatha yoga, or dancing.

Charles Stuart Platkin has hit on something here that is lacking in the debate over obesity in the United States today. People need to be given information that is honest and practical so they can clearly understand what they need to do to lose weight and get healthy. Enough with the confusing message to "eat right" or "follow a balanced diet." Obviously nobody knows what that means anymore.

What we learn from The Diet Detective's Count Down is that there are consequences for making poor choices in our diet. If you are willing to put in the time to burn off what you have consumed, then good for you. Otherwise, you may start to think twice before downing those 4 slices of Meat Lover's pizza from Pizza Hut for lunch. It'll only take you three hours riding around on your bicycle to burn those calories.

You know, eating healthier is already sounding a whole lot better!

Book Description

What if every step you took deepened your connection with all of life and imprinted peace, joy, and serenity on the earth? With Walking Meditation, listeners enjoy the first comprehensive instructional program in this serene spiritual practice to help them walk with presence and peace of mind whether in nature or on a busy city street. Presented in a unique format that combines a book with a DVD and audio CD, Walking Meditation features esteemed Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh along with one of his principle students, Anh-Huong Nguyen, as they together illuminate the central tenets of this powerful art, including: • How to recognize the miracle in simply walking—not as a means to an end, but as the opportunity to touch the fullness of life • Reversing "habit energy" through the unification of body and mind • Using walking meditation to work with difficult emotions such as anger and anxiety, and much more.

There is a Buddhist concept known as Apranihita, or the spirit of "wishlessness," in which one neither pursues desires nor flees from discomforts. With Walking Meditation, practitioners from every spiritual tradition will rediscover "our home in the here and now, as the long road we all must walk turns to quiet joy."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good intro to walking meditation.......2007-04-10

I really like the dvd that comes with this, where you get to see Thay actually teaching a group of students how to do walking meditation. Ms. Nguyen, who teaches on the cd, is less effective, for me. She talks TOO slow and I get impatient with her. (I know, "meditate on this"!)

The book is short, though it also does give a lot of basic info on walking meditation.

Overall, I think this is a worthwhile purchase, especially if you can find it on sale. The dvd is the best part, but the book and the cd are also worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars This is a good introduction to mindfulness and provides a nice simple method for walking meditation.......2007-03-20

I teach meditation workshops and I'm a personal growth coach. I have a background in psychology and have studied meditation for many years. There is a lot of material out there on meditation and much of it is very good. However, there isn't very much literature on walking meditation.

What this CD provides is elementary mindfulness principles and a very simple walking practice to go along with these. This simple method is easily learned and the accompanying book reinforces the basic principles.

If you are looking for a technical approach with lots of details on an advanced walking meditation practice, this may not be for you. However, this material covers essential points about living a happier life and walking as a spiritual practice. It gets you started in the right direction and takes a Zen rather than traditional Theravadan approach.

In certain sections the book and audio don't exactly correspond, but I don't see that as a real obstacle to learning. In fact, normally you wouldn't get a book along with a CD at this price point.

There are also other good CDs that present walking meditation from a different viewpoint such as Insight Meditation: A Step-By-Step Course on How to Meditate Another set of good complimentary practices presented from a Western point of view is Guided Mindfulness Meditation (Guided Mindfulness). I would seriously consider some of this material as well as your practice gets deeper.

You can see a list of some of these resources on my profile grouped under Buddhist Meditation resources. I find that walking meditation is a particularly good practice for Western people and this is a great starting point for any type of practice. There are many approaches to this type of meditation and all of them can be very beneficial.

5 out of 5 stars The WALKING MEDITATION is no walk in the park!.......2007-01-12

I am disabled. It is very hard for me to walk. However, with the Walking Meditation I find it much easier to walk, for the meditating gets one's mind off of the pain you're experiencing. I would recommend it for anyone who has difficulty in walking but wants to increase their walking capactiy. It is indeed a life saver for me.

5 out of 5 stars Walking Meditation DVD/CD/Book Set.......2006-11-27

"Walking meditation is meditation while walking. We walk slowly, in a relaxed way, keeping a light smile on our lips. When we practice this way, we feel deeply at ease, and our steps are those of the most secure person on Earth. All our sorrows and anxieties drop away, and peace and joy fill our hearts. Anyone can do it. It takes only a little time, a little mindfulness, and the wish to be happy." ~Thich Nhat Hanh

Thich Nhat Hanh teaches the importance of mindfulness and believes walking is not just a way to get from one place to another, "it is a time to live." Enjoying every step you make is more important than arriving at your new destination. Walking with a sense of peace and joy is explained more on the DVD as he demonstrates how to walk with a sense of joy.

He introduces the concepts of:

Walking in the present moment
The three basic elements of walking meditation
Where to practice walking meditation
Practicing walking meditation
The fourth element of walking meditation: Smiling

"Peace is every step
the shining red sun is my heart.
Each flower smiles with me.
How green, how fresh all that grows.
How cool the wind blows.
Peace is every step.
It turns the endless path to joy.
~Tinh Thury

The CD introduces:

Conscious Breathing Meditation
Slow Walking Meditation
Walking Meditation in Nature
Walking Meditation in Public Places
Walking Meditation to Embrace Your Emotions

If you are looking for ways to exercise your soul as much as your body, then Walking Meditations can bring you more peace and give you new reasons to walk in nature.

Nguyen Anh-Huong's beautiful voice also leads you through a meditation where you learn to breathe more deeply and imagine yourself as a tree, with roots deep in the earth. The last three sections show you how to breathe and walk with purpose and joy.

Anyone who enjoys Yoga will also enjoy the meditations as they add new creative dimensions. This book is filled with poetic thoughts, new reasons to enjoy life and a embraces a nurturing place for your soul to grow.

"May flowers bloom beneath your feet." ~ pg. 53

Do you like to walk? Are you thinking about walking as a way to get some exercise, lose weight, or to de-stress? This is the only book you will ever need. Mark Fenton is not only qualified to write this excellent guide, he has done the hard, creative work to do it. Whether you are a veteran walker, a beginner, or just thinking about the possibility of starting; this guide has so much to offer each of you.

5 out of 5 stars I'm excited about walking!.......2007-04-27

I had been talking about starting a walking program for months. One of my coworkers finally bought this book for me, and it immediately lit a (figurative) fire under my butt to get me moving!

This book not only provides a 52-week guideline for increasing your activity, but it also serves as a journal to log what activity you have acheived that day. It stresses getting 6 days of at least 30 minutes of activity, but it has a 4-week plan to ease you into the 30 minutes if you've been fairly inactive before starting the program.

The author also urges you to get your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose level checked at the beginning of your 52-week program, again at 6 months, and again at the end of the program. I think that's highly responsible of the author, and was also highly motivating for me to visit my doctor for the first time in over 2 years.

5 out of 5 stars THE Best Book on Walking!.......2006-08-21

I have read many books on walking, and this is by far the best. It is good for the novice or expert and contains a great progressional walking program that you can jump into at any point.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2003-09-09

I've bought this book four times now, because I show my copy to a family member or friend and they get so excited about it, I give them my copy and then have to go buy another one. This is the best walking book I've ever come across, with good information for the total beginner or the experience walker who just wants some extra motivation. Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Good for the beginner .......2007-06-27

If you are just getting into or thinking about a walking/running program this book is for you. If you have been doing both for some time, its a great read, just beyond where you are at in your program. I have given this book to my sister who has just turned 40 and she loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book for the experienced runner and novice walker.......2005-10-24

As I read this book (I am beginning a walking program), I became very honored to read about all the blood, sweat, and tears Ms. Switzer went through during her career as a runner. She makes you feel you are with her during those times. Her advice is sound, professional, and in your best interest. If you listen to what she tells you, i.e., how your shoes and clothes should fit; how you should start out on your program; and the wonderful advice to "get you out the door," you will have a very long and rewarding running/walking program, that can and will enhance your life. This book has really changed my outlook, my exercise capacity, and pretty much my overall health! Thanks for writing this book, Ms. Switzer. I owe you big time! Sandy, in Florida.

1 out of 5 stars Errors.......2003-01-04

This book comes across as poorly edited and researched. Contains mispelled words and incorrect statements such as "air is 80% oxygen". It is also hard for a beginning runner to relate to a marathoner who has run for almost her entire life.

5 out of 5 stars INSPIRING AND SENSIBLE! BRAVO!.......2002-10-15

I hadn't run for 17 years and never ran more than 3.5 miles. (I'm 40.) With the help of this book, I am up to 5 miles (and counting!). The book is easy to read. The program is easy to follow. However, this book is for people who are basically in good health and who like to exercise. The book will not GIVE you motivation, it will simply help you if you are already somewhat motivated and want to get in better shape. I have followed her advice, gotten great results and enjoyed the process. This book has been worth a million to me!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2002-08-14

I picked up this book after making a decision to get in better shape (even though I'm only 34). I've always hated running, so I'm not sure what prompted me to consider it. Her system for becoming a 30-minute runner definitely works. Both my partner and I made it to 30 minutes (although it took a little longer than ten weeks). I am now running 54 minutes, my partner 45 minutes. I'd recommend this book to anyone (not only women), even if you only use the time charts for becoming a 30 minute walker/runner and not the rest of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Quite pleased.......2007-05-15

Being new to the whole fitness area, this book is a god-send. I have been quite pleased...it's helping me to train for the 10k portion of a local marathon that my relay team is participating in. I know that by following the guidelines and training schedule, I will be prepared and will not push myself too far and risk injury.

4 out of 5 stars great for beginners.......2006-12-03

I bought this book to help me train for my first half-marathon. I found it very useful with lots of information. It is very simple and easy to read while still providing good techinical information. I feel that I will be very well prepared for my half marathon in the spring!

5 out of 5 stars Helpful!.......2006-11-10

I purchased this book to help me train for my first half marathon. There were many tips I'd not thought of, things that really truly helped me. I've done many 5K's - but even that section helped as well for me to do even better for the short races. I recommend this book if you are a beginning marathoner - - even if you have some experience as I had -- to sort of boost that confidence level a bit!

5 out of 5 stars Get Ready To Run Faster.......2005-09-16

This is a great book that was easy to read, with ideas and workouts that were easy to incorporate into my training, racing and nutrition. Before I had this book, I was frequently injured and I had run a half-marathon in two hours. In the nine months since I got the book, I have run a 1:37:51, and then a 1:24:48 and I believe I'll go faster in the future. If you want to run faster and healthier, you should get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Useful Information - Easy to Read.......2005-09-16

This book provided great information that I could actually apply to my own training and nutrition. It is easy to read and easy to use to plan my workouts. I'm seeing improvement in my running and training is more fun. I'd recommend it for anyone starting out or stuck at a running pace on which they know they can improve.

5 out of 5 stars Great pedometer book.......2007-10-09

When I bought this book, I knew nothing about pedometers or their uses. This is a really good book. I highly recomend it. Well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars It's So Simple.......2007-09-23

My first thought when I saw this book was, " what a stupid book -who needs a book about how to operate a pedometer." My curiosity about what the book might entail made me open the first few pages and read a bit. I was pleasantly surprised by the words on the page. This is definitely a good book for people who are at or below the basic level of fitness and want to get started doing something to improve their health.
There is really nothing simpler than putting on a pedometer and letting it count your steps, and the book doesn't explain pedometers as much as the concept of walking your way to fitness with the aid of a pedometer. There is a nice list of resources at the back of the book, as well as some suggestions about what pedometer to purchase. There are a few more than 6 chapters but, basically, this is a 6-week program that is designed to increase your steps per day up to 10,000. The author shows you creative ways to achieve your step goal (although not all of them are practical, especially if you live in a large, sprawling city or an inner city neighborhood with limited walking spaces). Overall, I enjoyed the book and found it easy to read and very informative. The book is primarily for beginners/those not interested in high-impact activities and will get you interested enough to try and walk your way to health.

3 out of 5 stars Good - but not a great deal of 'meat' to chew on.......2007-09-13

This is a good book to get enthusiastic about walking to stay fit and lose weight. However it must be said that the book does stretch out the "limited" content quite a bit. I read this in one evening and was motivated to replace the pedometer that I had purchased and to get walking each and everyday. I will have to see if the 10'000+ steps a day have any long lasting weight loss effects...

4 out of 5 stars Good, informative book, especially for beginners.......2007-06-08

I have been walking daily for years now, and I have been using a pedometer for a few months. I read the book once I was already familiar with pedometer walking, so a lot of the information in it was not new to me. Still, some of the tips in the book were useful and I especially liked the list of additional resources at the end of the book. I think the book would be even more useful for beginners. It helps select a good pedometer, use it accuratly, determine how much one is normally walking and improving one's total number of weekly steps. It seems to assume one is still struggling to build up to 10,000 steps per day and most of its tips are given to reach that goal. This was a bit annoying for me, since I was already walkin that much when I started reading the book, but I was still able to use some of the information to further increase my total steps. I strongly reccomend the book for beginners and I think some more experienced walkers might also find it useful.

3 out of 5 stars A good starter........2007-05-18

I bought it for my mom along with a pedometer. Seems an easy read with sensible, easy-to-follow directions. Too bad it doesn't do the walking for her.

Book Description

Developed by weight-loss experts Drs. James O. Hill and John C. Peters, co-founders of America on the Move™, The Step Diet Book is a motivational walking program that will help millions of overweight Americans lose weight and keep it off forever.

Combining a book and pedometer--in itself a $20 value--plus conversion charts and dozens of fat-burning Step Recipes, this is a complete package. At its core is a simple concept called energy balance. Calories come in, calories go out--and when intake is greater than output, you gain weight. The Step Diet Book attacks the problem from both ends. First, use the pedometer to figure out how many steps you take in an average day, then raise the number by 2,000--it's as easy as pacing while talking on the phone, or parking at the far end of the lot. Second, eat one-quarter less of your food--which counteracts our tendency to supersize meals. Once balance is achieved, get fit and lose weight by adding more steps to your day. You can even enjoy a guilt-free lapse by knowing exactly how many steps to tack on at the end of your day.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for a good diet book? Your weight is over........2007-09-07

It's nice to see more diet books coming out that are based on good, sound science- just like this one. In a nutshell, this book emphasizes walking to lose weight; in fact it even comes with a handy step counter so you can get a good idea where you've been (and for that matter, where you need to go).

All in all, I found this to be a great concept, the only drawback being people who don't have places to walk year round or just plainly get bored with walking. And the diet part? Basically, it's to just eat 75% of what you normally do. Now how easy is that? Anyway, all in all it's a great book. Readers having trouble staying motivated to diet and exercise might also want to check out The Sixty-Second Motivator.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2007-08-31

I would recommend this book to others. It is basic common sense really that getting more exercise will burn more calories. There's a lot of number figuring in this book which made it kind of confusing. But overall I think it makes a lot of sense to start getting more exercise through walking and increasing your walking gradually.

5 out of 5 stars It's almost too easy.......2007-07-29

I reviewed the Omron HJ-112 pedometer that I bought with this book, and together, they were very encouraging. I've tried too many diets to count and I absolutely hate counting calories. What this book teaches you and actually encourages, is a healthy self competition. The fun part was the first chapter in which it told me to wear the pedometer the next day and at the end of the day, mark in the book how many steps I took. It said to just to walk normally and do the activities I normally do so I can see where I'm at. The first day I admit I cheated a little and walked a little more at work but when I came home, I looked at my pedometer and was disappointed to only see little more than 2,000 steps on it! I was disappointed. I was also 247lbs and those numbers confirmed how little I was doing for myself. The book encourages it's readers to add a mere 500 steps every day and gives tips on how I to squeeze in extra steps even if we think we dont have time to do walk after work. I have a 9hr a day desk job and when I came home, I was used to just plopping in front of the computer with nothing to do but eat. After that disappointing first day with my pedometer, when I found out numerically how slothful I was, it didn't make me give up. It actually gave me a boost to do more. I'm not competitive, but every day I was making myself beat the number of steps taken the previous day and keeping my log in the book. Getting to 10,000 steps a day is easier than one would think. With the Omron pedometer (not the one that came with the book) I was actually walking 1.5-2hrs every day. At one point, I was doing 3 hrs a day. That was excessive, but for me, I was encouraged at how fast the weight was coming off. I gave up fast food and soda and ate pretty much nothing but breads, pastas, pretty much anything carb, veggies, & real dairy. Low-carb diets are completely ridiculous. I'm a vegetarian, that's pretty much the bulk of what I eat. Carbs are not the devils work, I assure you. It's portion sizes. At the end of 2006 I was at 144lbs. Ditching soda & fast food were easy and even after I've lost this much weight, I don't crave them. This book is highly recommended and is very encouraging when you dont know where to start. Everything they say makes perfect sense and you aren't burdened with logs to keep, unless you want to. The pedometer that comes with the book is not too accurate but will still give you a rough idea of where you're at with steps if you dont have the money to buy a decent pedometer. It's such a great idea from the authors to include it and it just goes to show how much they want to fix the obesity problem in this country. If you have the cash, invest in the Omron HJ-112 pedometer. It's reliable and isn't too expensive. I'm so blessed that this book came into my life when it did.I can't recommend it enough.

4 out of 5 stars Good book...tells us what we already know.......2007-06-05

I got this book along with my pedometer. The book is not GREAT but basic. It is organized well and I think can be understood by just about anyone. I must say it is the best diet program around...It is no dieting involved...just gradual lifestyle changes: Move more, eat less, drink more water. The End. Gotta love it. :-)

5 out of 5 stars what we always knew.......2007-04-01

This is a wonderful book in that it tells you exactly what you always knew...you must exercise in order to lose weight...I love this book because it takes my body weight and size and puts it into chart form as to what you must do to first lose weight and then to maintain...highly recommend this book

Book Description

A new approach to using walking to heal emotional trauma and bring forth optimal mental functioning

• Explores why and how we carry emotional wounds, and how they can be healed and resolved

• Shows how walking stimulates both sides of the brain to promote and restore mental health

• Provides simple, yet potent, mental exercises to use while walking

Our bodies usually heal rapidly from an illness, injury, or wound. Yet our minds and hearts often suffer for years with debilitating symptoms of distress or upset. Why is it so hard for our minds and hearts to heal? The key to healing them is simple and can be just a short walk away.

Walking--a bilateral therapy that has been a part of human life throughout history--allows people to heal emotionally as quickly as they do physically. Bilateral therapies engage both sides of the brain and unlock natural states of optimal function and creativity. Thom Hartmann examines how memory works and why emotional shock can resist normal healing. He found that the simple act of walking is effective in treating emotional disturbances ranging from temporary upsets and problems to chronic conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

Case studies have shown dramatic results. Walking consciously, while holding a distress or desire in mind, can rapidly dissolve the rigidity of a traumatic memory or negative mind state, dispersing its unpleasant associations in as little as a half hour’s time. While walking has always been a natural part of life, its importance in promoting and maintaining mental health is only recently being rediscovered. Hartmann’s simple yet potent exercises allow us to create our own walking journeys to restore our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being as well as rejuvenate our body’s health.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and interesting information.......2007-09-23

We've all been told that walking is good for us. This is an excellent source for learning about the mind and the benefits of walking. The author explains the mechanics of how and why walking helps us to process things like creativity, events, problems and/or solutions as well as healing. Gives specific techniques to use.

This is one of the most useful, informative and interesting books I've read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Effective Book for Healing Emotional Wounds.......2007-05-26

I ordered this book on a lark. Before I ordered it I had a very successful EMDR session and this book shows a perfect way to get the same benefits. It addresses trauma and how to process it so it becomes something of the past. I can't recommend this book enough for anybody who is stuck in a painful situation, has PTDS, or simply wants to become more alive to the moment. EMDR:
American Psychiatric Association (2004). Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Acute Stress Disorder and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Acute Stress Disorder and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. Arlington, VA: American Psychiatric Association Practice Guidelines.

* EMDR was given the highest level of recommendation (category for robust empirical support and demonstrated effectiveness) in the treatment of trauma.

Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense (2004). VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Post-Traumatic Stress. Washington, DC.

* EMDR was placed in the "A" category as "strongly recommended" for the treatment of trauma.

5 out of 5 stars New age and general-interest health collections alike will find this inspirational........2007-03-06

It's a simple concept: our bodies usually heal rapidly from injury but our minds can suffer for years from upset. Now there's a method for combining the healing powers of the body with the mind: walking, a therapy which actives both sides of the brain to remove 'stuck' emotions. Case studies supplement the author's tips on how to use movement and mind awareness of the stress to mitigate its effects. New age and general-interest health collections alike will find this inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars A Breakthrough Book.......2007-01-17

Don't let the lightweight title, cover, and page-count fool you. This is a breakthrough book, and not just another self-help, happy-talk rip-off. This book can stand proudly next to the most academic psychological tome, and replace much of the pop psychology pap moldering on our bookshelves.

To be open to something so important, one first has to know who the author is, what he stands for, and why he can be trusted. I've read several of Thom Hartmann's books, and listened to his daily progressive radio program numerous times. I can only state emphatically: This is a gifted man we can trust. He is the real deal. (See my earlier post on him for more info.)

The basics of the book are these:

1. Our bodies are self-healing if we feed it the right food and exercise it properly under the right conditions. Shouldn't our minds and emotions also be self-healing?

2. Rhythmic, bilateral movement is the way we've healed ourselves from traumatic, psychological wounds for hundreds of thousands of years. But until now, we didn't know how it worked.

3. "Bilaterality is the ability to have the right and left hemispheres of the brain fully functional and communicating with each other."

4. Freud's early, very successful work was based on Bilaterality techniques, but after some unfortunate, sensationalistic historical events, he was forced to abandon it for mostly unsuccessful "talk-therapy" methods. Freud tried, but failed, for years to find an equally-successful technique. This history is crucial to our understanding of why psychotherapy evolved the way it did.

5. Devastating events can haunt our every waking moment for years. Some suffer war-caused "post traumatic stress disorders" for years or allow a loved-one's untimely death to ruin their lives, while others are able to move on. Just as we learned to transform our physical health by eating organic food, exercising, and drinking pure water, now we know how to consiously bring ourselves back to a healthy mental state.

6. This discovery comes from Hartmann's own training, observations and experiments, with dramatic results illustrated by case studies and testamonials.

7. Hartmann details a simple, five step technique.

8. Bilaterality has also been used by humans for less-traumatic problem solving, creativity, and motivation. Now we can train ourselves to use it consciously.

This book deserves a wide readership and word-of-mouth recommendations. I urge you to read it and pass it on, especially to those whose lives have been darkened by tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars Hartmann is right, walking is great.......2006-12-22

I can't recommend the work of Thom Hartmann highly enough, not just this book but others of his that I have read as well.

I've found that walking just ten or fifteen minutes a day can have a huge impact on not just my physical health, but my mental well-being as well. And history shows that Thom is quite right in his observations about the past (such as the anti-Jewish stereotype in "Trilby").
