Book Description

Suicide haunts our literature and our culture, claiming the lives of ordinary people and celebrities alike. It is now the third leading cause of death for fifteen- to twenty-four-year-olds in the United States, raising alarms across the nation about the rising tide of hopelessness seen in our young people. It is a taboo subtext to our successes and our happiness, a dark issue that is often euphemized, avoided, and little understood. In our century, psychology and psychiatry alike have attempted to understand, prevent, and medicalize these phenomena. But they have failed, argues Dr. Edwin Shneidman, because they have lost sight of the plain language, the ordinary everyday words, the pain and frustrated psychological needs of the suicidal individual. In The Suicidal Mind, Dr. Shneidman has written a groundbreaking work for every person who has ever thought about suicide or knows anybody who has contemplated it. The book brims with insight into the suicidal impulse and with helpful suggestions on how to counteract it. Shneidman presents a bold and simple premise: the main cause of suicide is psychological pain or "psychache." Thus the key to preventing suicide is not so much the study of the structure of the brain, or the study of social statistics, or the study of mental diseases, as it is the direct study of human emotions. To treat a suicidal individual, we need to identify, address, and reduce the individual's psychache. Shneidman shares with the reader his knowledge, both as a clinician and researcher, of the psychological drama that plays itself out in the suicidal mind through the exploration of three moving case studies. We meet Ariel, who set herself on fire; Beatrice, who cut herself with the intent to die; and Castro, a young man who meant to shoot his brains out but survived, horribly disfigured. These cases are presented in the person's own words to reveal the details of the suicidal drama, to show that the purpose of suicide is to seek a solution, to illustrate the pain at the core of suicide, and to isolate the common stressor in suicide: frustrated psychological needs. Throughout, Shneidman offers practical, explicit maneuvers to assist in treating a suicidal individual--steps that can be taken by concerned friends or family and professionals alike. Suicide is an exclusively human response to extreme psychological pain, a lonely and desperate solution for the sufferer who can no longer see any alternatives. In this landmark and elegantly written book, Shneidman provides the language, not only for understanding the suicidal mind, but for understanding ourselves. Anyone who has ever considered suicide, or knows someone who has, will find here a wealth of insights to help understand and to prevent suicide.

5 out of 5 stars Keen insight into a difficult topic.......2007-09-08

When I first picked up this book, I hated it. I thought Dr. Shneidman was merely throwing out new terms to cover a topic which is often very difficult to discuss. However as I gave him time to develop his thought, I was drawn into his book, not only does he have a very clear understanding of suicidality and its surrounding causes, but he presents it in a very accessible manner. The case histories that he shares with the reader also serve to illustrate his ideas and to put a face on this often taboo topic.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Book!.......2007-02-10

I've already leant it to two friends and they're buying copies of their own. Useful for consumers AND mental health professionals.

5 out of 5 stars excellent look into the suicidal mind.......2006-12-27

This was by far the best book I have ever read on this subject. The author explains that not unlike physical pain the suicidal mind is dealing with "psyche" ache, which they believe they cannot live with. He also explains that suicidal individuals have basically a one track mind in which they can see no alternatives. When thought about it this way one can see why some do choose to end their suffering in this manner. It definitely made me more sympathetic than I was before but I have always believed that it was not up to me to judge a person who ultimately makes this decision since I have no clue as to what they are suffering. Who am I to judge?

5 out of 5 stars The Suicidal Mind, Autopsy of the Suicidal Mind.......2006-07-08

Both of these books written by Edwin Shneidman Ph.D are insightful and stimulating reading. They make for good starter texts for people interested in suicide because they are so well written. Dr. Shneidman is arguably the dean of American Sucidology. They are just very informative and accessible. These are must reads.

5 out of 5 stars Life saving book for the suicidally inclined academic or intellectual.......2005-07-11

My physician gave me this book a few weeks back. I've been dragging along the bottom of the gravel pit lately and reading Suicidial Mind helped. The sections I found particularly helpful for fighting depression's undertow are:

1. Terman Study findings concerning the high suicide rate among members of this brainy (and otherwise generally healthier than average) sample of men and women

2. Analysis of suicide in literary characters and awareness that the Madame Bovaries and Ana Kareninas of the world need to take care in turning life's pages and painting themselves into corners

3. Questionnaire survey pinpointing the types of anguish associated with (and possible triggers for?) suicidal thinking.

I pray that reading this review and the book which inspired it will help someone to stay alive one more day.

Book Description

Civilisations die from suicide," Toynbee warned us, "not by murder." The United States, along with Australia and several others have pursued fatally flawed economic and financial policies for almost four decades, beginning with ill-judged interest-rate hikes and stagflation in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They then punctuated the years afterwards with policy departures which, almost without exception, made things worse. In effect, they embarked on serial attempts at economic, social, political and strategic suicide through often obsessive devotion to such concepts as "free" markets, deregulation, privatisation and globalisation. They neglected mounting dangers from debt, deficits and derivatives, from rampant speculation, chronic unemployment, low wages and mounting inequality at home and abroad. Long years of unmitigated error have reduced a once magnificent American economy to one that increasingly resembles a hollowed-out shell. Though there continue to be great potential strengths in the American economy and society, these strengths have already been gravely diminished and the unremitting ebb of intrinsic power persists while other economies grow stronger, ironically by grasping the opportunities that feckless American policies continue to surrender to them. Perversely, predatory finance capitalism has nourished and become a victim of the prey that, with exquisite cleverness, it sought to capture and exploit. This erosion of economic and financial strength has grave social, political and strategic consequences. Not so long ago, the United States was, despite some inevitable imperfections, one of the world's most admired, progressive and transparent democracies. That democracy has been increasingly corrupted over the years and America's capacity to carry out its role as a superpower - certainly as the world's single superpower - has been put gravely at risk. These are some of the major issues addressed in "America's Suicidal Statecraft". Basically, they are down-to-earth economic and financial issues but they have have had and continue to have the most far-reaching social, political and strategic impacts - for the United States, for closely allied countries such as Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand and, indeed, for the whole world community. There are still ways in which the decline and prospective fall of the United States can be reversed; but that will call for an enormous exercise of political will and, above all, a comprehensive change of vision. At the moment, given the many complexities and uncertainties in the world economic, social, political and strategic situation, the most likely outcome is that American policies will be reversed and a new vision adopted only as irresistible imperatives when a devastating collapse has already occurred or is transparently under way. A crucial question is how many months or years we have left before we reach the point of collapse and just what we can do that will be effective in the meantime. "America's Suicidal Statecraft" suggests some approaches.

5 out of 5 stars A Robust Case for Peaceful Change.......2007-05-09

Dr Cumes' latest book "America's Suicidal Statecraft" should be read by everyone: policymakers, professional economists, bankers, businessmen and general public alike. He has been uncannily right for nearly forty years, from predicting "stagflation" in the early `seventies, to identifying shifts from domestic price inflation to deficits in the external balances in the `eighties, to foreseeing the stock-exchange crashes of 1987 and 2000, to identifying the development of a "casino-like" world economy, as he called it, especially from the 1990s onwards and, of course, to predicting the emergence of the "Asian Tigers" and the growth - unprecedented in speed and scale - of the two new potential "superpowers", China and India.
Now he warns us that nothing has been, or is being, done to devise effective means of managing the flow of funds - or the flow of "liquidity" or credit - in any way sufficient to avoid what promises to be the most monumental financial bust of all time. This bust will be global but it is most likely to hit hardest those who have been least inhibited in their embrace of modern finance capitalism and their "permissive" approach to financial and economic regulation.
Let us be clear, he says, that the advocacy of effective management of the flow of funds, domestically and globally, is not to advocate the destruction of capitalism but, on the contrary, to advocate effective means of preserving the essential nature of an economic system which has brought enormous benefits - along with enormous risks - over the past three centuries.
Even in the fundamentals of interest rate policy, he says, we have gone wrong and have delivered a triple whammy to boost inflation. "The reasons why this should be so are clear enough. Higher interest rates mean higher costs of production. Higher interest rates mean lower levels of output as some producers cut or cease production. Higher interest rates mean lower productivity by deterring fixed-capital investment which will enhance output per employee. There is thus a triple whammy giving a robust boost to inflation."
He points out that this reckless economic behaviour is in the context of a world armed to the teeth with the most terrifying weapons ever known and a struggle for limited resources that will continue to intensify deeply the risks of armed and potentially global conflict.
While Dr Cumes identifies the risks, he also shows how we can draw away from the abyss. The United States can reverse its progress towards self-destruction and maintain its role as a "superpower". But it will need to be a superpower for peaceful change. It will need to adopt economic policies that are soundly based not on speculation but on sustainable production. It will need to see that cooperative global solutions, rather than the use or threat of naked force are the pathway to human wellbeing - and indeed to human survival.
Dr Cumes outlines, in some detail, the policies and procedures whereby these solutions can be achieved. He warns that effective action along these lines may not be politically practicable before we endure a global bust; but, he says, we should then be prepared to act in ways that restore global stability and not in ways that, as in the Great Depression of the 1930s, will intensify the grave economic, social, political and strategic crises to which it now seems that, almost inevitably, we will be exposed.
For both his analysis of our problems and his proposed solutions, Dr Cumes' latest book should be on the reading list of everyone concerned about the future of life on our planet.

Book Description

Autopsy of a Suicidal Mind is a uniquely intensive psychological analysis of a suicidal mind. In this poignant scientific study, Edwin S. Shneidman, a founder of the field of suicidology, assembles an extraordinary cast of eight renowned experts to analyze the suicidal materials, including a ten-page suicide note, given to him by a distraught mother looking for insights into her son's tragic death. The psychological autopsy centers on the interviews conducted by Shneidman with Arthur's mother, father, brother, sister, best friend, ex-wife, girlfriend, psychotherapist, and attending physician. To gain some understanding of this man's intense psychological pain and to examine what may have been done to save his tortured life, Shneidman approached the top suicide experts in the country to analyze the note and interviews: Morton Silverman, Robert E. Litman, Jerome Motto, Norman L. Farberow, John T. Maltsberger, Ronald Maris, David Rudd, and Avery D. Weisman. Each of the eight experts offers a unique perspective on Arthur's tragic fate, and the sum of their conclusions constitutes an extraordinary psychological autopsy. This book is the first of its kind and a remarkable contribution to the study of suicide. Mental health professionals, students of human nature, and persons whose lives have been touched by this merciless topic will be mesmerized and enlightened by this unique volume. An epistemological tour de force, it will speak to anyone who is concerned with human self-destruction.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book with lots of info.............2004-07-09

I bought this book after reading a delightful article about the author, Schneidman, in the Los Angeles Times a couple of weeks ago (GREAT article, too, if you can find it!) The book is thorough, to say the least. I think probably everything that could be said about Arthur, the man who committed suicide, has been said. I would like to see a picture of him -- or would I? Turns out he was very self-centered; in fact, it's hard for me to believe all these people adored him as they seemed to. I don't mean to pass judgment on the man, but just wanted to let readers know this is an excellent, fascinating primer on suicide, and even of human nature. It is not too technical, and it is very touching in parts, not to mention educational. If you have ever known anyone who has committed suicide, or even know of someone (like Sylvia Plath, the poet), this book will hold your interest all the way through.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!!.......2004-06-20

This is an excellent book. I would recommend it to anyone interested in psychology - especially the suicidal aspect of it. At points the writing may be above the average person, but I think almost anyone can read and understand this book.

"I have just finished reading Autopsy of a Suicidal Mind. It is a wonderful piece to celebrate a kind of finale to a remarkable career in suicidology, a spectacular set of interviews and a remarkable set of commentaries by major figures in suicidology. And the case itself is fascinating. It is an amazing achievement." M. Brewster Smith, Ph.D. (Former President of the American psychological Asssociation)

5 out of 5 stars After the Autopsy, Cause of Death is Still Suicide... Sadly.......2004-04-04

Edwin Shneidman, one of the keenest minds on suicide, offers an outstanding "autopsy" of a suicidal mind, Arthur, a miserable physician-attorney. Arthur, it seems, had a knack for having to be perfect and for communicating his pain in letters. Given his suicide letter (and many drafts that preceded it), Shneidman and a team of suicidologists interview several people who knew Arthur well (they thought) to try to figure out just why Arthur chose death over life.

The book is outstanding. It is hard to stop reading as each expert and interviewee offers his or her own unique views of Arthur's life and death. Unfortunately, if you're looking for one correct answer, it's not in this book. Shneidman does an excellent job of showing how ultimately all psychological questions can be answered with just two words: "It depends!" Depending upon your own perspective, you could argue convincingly that Arthur kills himself because he was, for example, mildly autistic (and untreated), clinically depressed (and inappropriately treated), selfish and narcissistic (attention seeking), controlling and dominant (had to have the last word through his own death), or traumatized as a child by rigid, unloving parents that divorced young.

Overall, if you want to see first hand how some of the premier suicidologists in the world can honestly, yet amicably, disagree, check this excellent, quick read text. It won't give you the answers, but it sure will help you understand better that suicide and psychological health are complex matters that we may never truly understand.

This work approaches the mind of the suicidal person from the perspective of a person on a dark journey that involves the suicide life story, stress and problems of living, dark ideas, dark emotions, dark physiology, hopelessness, and psychache. The work of the psychotherapist is to join the suicidal person on the dark journey, understand from the person's experience how suicide has come to make experiential sense, and finally affirm and validate the dark journey. In so doing, the psychotherapist builds a healing relationship that offers hope, relief, and skills to redirect the journey to one of light, hope, and possibilities.

A multimodal, stage process model of suicide risk assessment and intervention is provided to guide the therapist. Case vignettes are used to illustrate the application of this model to therapeutic practice. Finally, the critical areas of risk management and self-care for the psychotherapist are covered to protect him or her from the emotional and legal challenges of this most difficult work.

If you are wondering whether or not you will love or hate this book after reading many of the very disparate opions written here, I hope to clear it up a bit...

Firstly, if you are an admamant atheist, forget it.
If you are a fundamentalist Christian, not for you.
However, if you are an openminded skeptic, much like myself, who is interested in the existence of near death experiences and other kinds of strange and unexplainable paranormal occurances, you might like the book, or at least be interested.

If you have just suffered a loss of a loved one very recently (say, within 6 - 12 months) perhaps this book might be a little much to take all in one gulp, if you don't agree with the beliefs. I myself do agree with many of the beliefs and that's why I gave this book such a high rating. Some of the beliefs in the book are: 1. Life after death exists. Communication with souls who have crossed over is possible. 2. Suicide is not an option for young people because it causes so much pain for those left behind. (However, for older people with chronic fatal illnesses it is different)

I think that a lot of the reason that people did not like this book is because they may have focused more on the suicide notes that Stephen left behind, and not the tormented words of his mother. These notes are sad, yes, but in Stephen's twisted way, he tried to make light of the situation and made lots of jokes and thought everything would be better once he died. The notes are truly sad and I think we should try to remember how naive he was at 15 years of age. I lost one of my best friends to suicide, and I am sure that she thought she would be better off "over there" because she was in so much mental anguish. Stephen's notes do not belie the immense pain he must have felt, probably because even in his death he was trying to uplift the people around him and help them get over grieving for him. He had a personality that seeked to please others, and the jokes and pronouncements about how he'll be so much better off dead and on the other side are a sad lie to himself. Or maybe he really did not know how much his family would suffer. I myself did not forsee how horrifying suicide could be. I thought that if anyone around me ever did that, it would be like griveing a normal death. How wrong I was.

I can understand why people would react so strongly to this book. Most of the people, from what I can tell from their posting, have lost someone to suicide. This type of death causes so much pain in those left behind that many people actually suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Some people are looking for someone to blame for Stephen's death, as much as they are looking to blame someone for the death of their own loved one. In this case, it is the author, Anne, who gets blamed. Many grievers also feel unmitigated anger, towards everything and anything. This is a normal part of grief. These people need to express their anger in a healthy way. That's why I wouldn't reccomend this book for someone who is in the "raw" part of their grief. If they don't agree with the ideas in the book it will just piss them off more than they already are.

I thank Anne for being brave enough to publish such a controversial book. It has helped me, as much as it has inflammed others. (from the ratings of the postings, the ratio seems to be about half and half) I personally do not believe a suicidal teenager would take their life after reading this book. The aftermath of suicide is clearly stated (perhaps many of the negative reviewers did not read the book through to the end, which is unfortunate, as they may have come away with a different perspective. The consequences of suicide on the other side is to see the incredible pain that the person who killed themselves has caused. And to experience that there is no way for them to take away this gigantic and final and terrible mistake. Stephen many times says that he wishes he could change what happened, that what he believed before he did it (see above, his suicide notes) was absolutely completely crazy. The book very explicitly states that suicide is not an option. It would be interesting to hear from a teenager who has read the book, and whether or not it helped them see this.

It is true however, that some people will want to do it and find cause to end their lives no matter what. They will try to find "answers" and reasons, as if looking for someone else to guide their own hand. With that said, any kind of material, be it a book, a song, or the words of a loved one, that can be twisted into some sick kind of urging to end their lives. That is their own fault, not the fault of someone like Anne, someone who wrote the sad lyrics to a song, or even your fault, if you feel that you may have pushed your loved one to suicide. You didn't. It was their desicion, alone.

4 out of 5 stars We will never know for sure.......2006-07-14

I bought this book because one of best friends committed suicide and I wanted some answers. I have read all the reviews and was prepared to either believe or dismiss it as the delusions of a mourning mother. I never actually believed that Anne lied, but I was prepared to believe that Stephen's narration was just an illusion in her head, born out of a desperate need to believe that he is ok.

I just finished this book and even though on one hand some of Stephen's narration speaks to my heart, to a certain degree, in my opinion readers should be prepared to feel rather empty after reading this book. This book will not bring your loved one back. This book will not reassure you that your dead loved one is ok. Perhaps it will give you an idea of what afterlife is like, if you have a little faith, but the truth is, until you die and you meet your loved one and hear the truth personally, you will not rest.

I was surprised at Anne's honesty. It takes courage to admit to all the mistakes that she did. She was a bad mother. But she did try to do the best that she could under the circumstances. Her mistakes do not justify Stephen's death. You are either strong enough to handle what life throws at you or you are not. Stephen was not.

I do not believe that this book encourages suicide. I mean, Stephen's account of what happened to him after he died is not that great. It is only with time that the soul is able to find its way. But until that happens, it's not pretty.

I would recommend this book to people who want to reassure themselves that their loved one is ok, and I believe that there is a degree of truth in this book, but be prepared to remain feeling restless afterwards. Because whatever you read, whatever reassurance you get from any book, your son, daughter, relative or friend will never tell you face to face what really goes on. Unless you achieve the state of consciousness that Anne describes which allows her to talk to her son, which, if it is true, I hope that some day we can do that too.

If you are still looking for answers, I would recommend the "Conversations with God" trilogy by Neale MacDonald Walsh.

          2 out of 5 stars Stephen Lives!.......2005-03-12

I may not be a teenager anymore, but I too have suicidal tendencies occasionally. After reading this book, it doesn't seem to be a big deal to actually go through with it. In fact, it sounds pretty neat!
Thankfully, as an adult, I still have some good sense left to decide against it everytime that thought crosses my mind.
This book would have a tragic result in the hands of a suicidal teenager. Of that, I'm certain.
However, unlike most other reviewers, I do not believe Anne Puryear had ulterior motives other than to help others in similar cirmcumstances.
I do not believe she is the epitome of evil like some have portrayed her.
One reviewer even went so far as to suggest Puryear intentionally drove her son to suicide so that she could write about it and make tons of profit.
Those types of allegations are absurd and heartless when the simple fact remains she only meant to help. Nothing more, nothing less.
Unfortunately, she was too grief stricken to realize how her book might do more damage than good. That's where her fault lies.
All other accusations are ridiculous and border on the bizarre.

If you had a son or daughter take their own life, would you try to profit from it? This is a sad sad story of a sad young man who took his own life to become closer to his delusional mother. Wake up, Anne. You talked all this physic nonsense and new age mumbo jumbo to your vulnerable and hurting son. And you have the audacity to write a book in his name after he is gone? This is not his story. It is your sick, twisted story, told in your words. Not his. You are evil.

          5 out of 5 stars Enlightening!!!!!!.......2005-02-26

As a "suicide survivor" after the death of my younger brother, I found this book very enlightening. The suicide of a loved one leaves many unanswered questions for the survivors. Reading this book acknowledges many of the same feelings I had, and continue to have, after my brothers death. I hope with all my heart that my brothers spirit is watching over our family, as I miss him dearly every day. This book has brought me hope for my journey into the next life.
