A great book on how to use food for healing.......2002-08-28
gThe Tao of Nutritionh is a food therapy guide based on the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which looks at food in a slightly different way from Western nutrition. The book is divided into 5 main sections. Section 1 very briefly outlines the theory including yin and yang, the main organs of the body, the 5 elements and 5 tastes, causes of diseases, prevention of diseases and a guideline for a balanced diet based on a pyramid (which is not unlike that used in macrobiotics). Section 2 is a list of foods including detail on both the energetics (i.e. which of the 5 tastes the food has, as well as whether it has a cooling, warming or moistening tendency) and healing aspects (such as clearing heat, removing dampness, lubricating the lungs, strengthening the heart etc.) of each food. Section 3 gives tips on which foods can help various health conditions such as bronchitis, eczema and headaches. Section 4 offers vegetarian recipes. Section 5 offers a simple meal plan.
As a non-vegetarian who has studied a little TCM, I was a little disappointed at the vegetarian bent of this book (although some fish and meat are included in the food list in Section 2). TCM does not discriminate against meat, and in fact some meats, such as chicken, are considered a very nourishing food for the weak, sick or elderly. That aside, this is an excellent book showing how to use food for both maintaining health and healing general health conditions.

medicore at best , not really usefull.......1999-08-27
After reading the Tao of Nutritrian by Dr. Chang this book is not worth the paper its printed on. There is much more useful book on foods, than this book.
An invaluable book, I even take it on vacation........1998-09-25
I bought this book about 4 or 5 years ago and it has become invaluable to me. The book starts with an overview of the principles of Chinese medical philosophy and then goes on with several sections describing the benefits of various foods and spices.
This book is very helpful for treating everyday minor ailments when you cannot, or don't want to, take medications. One of the first cures I tried was eating an apple to stop a dry cough, and it worked wonders!
Since travelling can through your body off its natural rythems, its a great book to travel with. It helps eat to prevent or cure those ailments of travel.
If you want to help your body heal itself, this is the book for you.
Book Description
Chinese dietary therapy is one of the most important aspects of Chinese medicine. The Tao of Healthy Eating illuminates the theory and practice of Chinese dietary therapy with emphasis on the concerns and attitudes of Westerners. Commonsense metaphors explain basic Chinese medical theories and their application in preventive and remedial dietary therapy. It features a clear description of the Chinese medical understanding of digestion and all the practical implications if this for day-to-day diet. Issues of Western interest are discussed, such as raw versus cooked foods, high cholesterol, food allergies, and candidacies. It includes the Chinese medical descriptions of 200 Western food and similar information on vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.

Excellent summary of Chinese dietary therapy........2006-08-23
I recommend this book for all my patients. I keep a copy in my waiting room. Diet alone can often solve many health problems. Major topics covered include food allergies, candida and obesity. The author explains the meaning of Chinese medical terminology such as Liver Qi, Stomach Heat, and Kidney Yin deficiency with easy to understand metaphors.
Bob Flaws is one of the most prolific American authors on Chinese medicine. In this book he nails the age old argument between cooked vs. raw food for once and for all. Chinese dietary therapy can lengthen your life!
Food is life... truly.......2006-04-17
My journey into Chinese Medicine began with acupuncture. Soon I gravitated towards herbs and TCM in general. Now this book has introduced me to the importance of diet in medicine. Sadly, this aspect is atrociously neglected in western medical science. I had already started incorporating elements of diet therapy into my practice, with success. I then started looking for more instructional material on the subject. I purchased Bob Flaws' book and it has helped me learn new material and reinforce my own personal observations regarding diet. Not only do I heartily recommend this volume, I bought one for a patient of mine who is into organic farming!
Wonderful!.......2006-03-25
I received my purchase very quickly and the book was new. I am very happy!
Best book on healing I've seen in a while.......2005-10-21
In this world of fluff and sound bites, this book says it all without sacrificing space. For those that need the big picture in order to grasp a concept, this is your "in" into Chinese dietary rules, as well as being the answer to most of what ails us. This is the book you read BEFORE you go see an accupuncturist, and the one that keeps you going back to measure your progress.
It takes quite a book to knock my socks off, and this one left me standing naked. This is the book that I want to put the in the hands of all those people who get on the Atkins diet and within a year later hit a wall, from the excess of cold and damp foods. This book stresses the importance of balance and the problems that excess or lack of restraint can cause to health. Even though there's not a recipe in the book, it's the important book that brings understand to the quality of the energy of food, that's perhaps of greater value even than it's carb or protein content. After reading this book, I immediately took all the other Chinese books out of the bookcase combing them for recipes. With my internal lights switched on, the importance of various foods stood out and made sense as they never had before.
As Chinese medicine dictates, each food and emotion enters a channel in the body, not unlike a river. And like salmon that swim out to sea for years only to return to an exact spawning ground located in a tiny freshwater creek, so do our foods and emotions nourish our bodies in very specific and necessary ways. Excessive use of cooling foods is brought home in his section on Spleen Vacuity and dampness. For those dealing with long term food allergies, candida, and obesity (that should cover about 4 out of 5 people, if the current polls mean anything), there's salvation in this book. The quality of the food in creating a energy in the body is far more important to healing, than it's perhaps it's protein values. Reading on you'll find that even reducing protein due to inabsorbtion is probably lifesaving.
My big epiphany came as I realized that what The Tao of Healthy Eating suggests, is a heart happy diet. In fact, all that is suggested to reduce spleen dampness in Chinese remedial therapy, is exactly what produces a happy heart. And as I thumbed through the now famous by Ophrah's endorsement Perricone Promise, a book on Beauty and Longevity by an expensive MD, I had to laugh to myself. All the dietary recommendations of the Perricone diet, can be found within this tiny book of Bob Flaws, the Tao of Healthy Eating! I even renamed Perricone's book, the Happy Spleen diet book, with a new label that I made and taped to the cover. Because for those that chase beauty creams and wonder herbs, the shortest way to tighter, firmer wrinkle free skin, is simply this: Reduce stress and take care of your spleen. Nothing ages you faster than our fast food, modern, highly cooling and phlegm producing diets in solidifying and packing on the inches of girth. If truth matters as much as beauty, then learn the Tao of Healthy Eating and change your life, and your appearance too!
OK, but now I'd like to learn something about TCM nutrition..........2005-09-30
I recently ordered this book to learn something about TCM and nutrition. Given the title, the description, and the reputation of the author, it seemed like a good deal. But don't be misled by these facts without noticing that the book is only 114 pages without the index. The print is huge, the margins are wide--I'd have been laughed at by professors in college had I used such wide margins to extend the length of my papers. Not to mention all the headings and chapter dividers. The supposed grammatical errors didn't bother me, although they seem to suggest that the book was hastily written. Lots of interesting ideas are contained here, and Bob Flaws cites many of the principles I've read about elsewhere, but he fails to put these claims together in a coherent and logically sound way. For a guy who claims to be a doctor and therefore a scientific minded person, he fell far short of my expectations for reasonable arguments for and discussions of his observations. And for a guy who's written over 60 books, I expected more than brief summations, unfounded and startlingly unsupported claims (I really wanted this to be a great book on the subject, but his entire "conclusions" chapter is bogged and invalidated by gross misestimations and weak claims based on insufficient statistics.). Perhaps I should have realized that having written 60 books is perhaps an indicator of the kind of thought and organization being put into each individual work. Boy, this is sounding really negative, so I'll say this. I DID like the last part of the book: lists of common foods, the merdian through which they're absorbed, their post-digestive temperature, and general effects according to traditional chinese medicine. Overall, this book is a very short, very brief introduction to TCM nutrition. But just like watching a suspensful movie on an old TV that keeps fuzzing in and out, at the end of this one you're going to wish you'd just sprung for the model with rabbit ears.
Book Description
A practical guide to preventing and treating the toxic assault on our bodies
• Shows how the practices of periodic detox and “rational retox” can counteract the toxic nature of our modern lifestyles, diets, and environment
• Provides ancient Chinese methods and remedies that help the body repair itself
• Includes detoxification techniques, formulas, and exercises that work within 10 days
Despite the wonders of modern medicine, the state of human health throughout the world is eroding at an alarming rate. The long-term accumulation of toxins and acid waste in our bodies--both from the chemically contaminated air we breathe and water we drink as well as the toxins we ingest in the form of low quality food, preservatives, and additives--damages our organs, corrodes our joints and arteries, enervates our nervous system, and inhibits our immune system. Chronic pain and fatigue, hypertension and heart failure, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, indigestion, insomnia, and even acne, are all caused by the long-term accumulation of toxins in our bodies.
In
The Tao of Detox Daniel Reid combines traditional Eastern practices and the latest of modern Western thinking to offer detoxification methods that can repair in as little as seven to ten days much of the long-term damage done. He provides breathing exercises, massage techniques, and soft exercises such as yoga and tai chi that help the body to heal itself. He also explains the importance of “rational retoxification,” which allows the careful reintroduction of less healthy substances, and offers ways to counteract those toxins we can’t--or don’t want to--avoid, including alcohol and tobacco. Reid explains that, just as we care for our cars with regular tune-ups, by practicing periodic detox as well as “rational retox,” we can enjoy long and healthy lives and still be able to “eat, drink, and be merry.”

One of my best purchases, ever........2006-11-04
I picked this book up after a trip to Bali where I saw one of the author's flyers for a health retreat he was conducting. I'm a bit of a skeptic when it comes to health and wellness gurus even though I pretty much embrace the alternative lifestyle - eat organic, mostly vegetarian, do yoga, chi gung, meditation that kind of thing and I was a little reluctant to buy the book. Let me say I'm glad I did! I quickly went on to buy his other three major books.
First up, I let me say, I was simply astounded in how much information was packed into this volume. Page after page is PACKED with advice, explanation, and recommendations on tools, techniques, methods, food and eating guidelines and products. I did a ten day cleanse as recommended by the author. It took some discipline to only do juices for 10 days and use the cleanse kit I bought yet it was well worth the effort.
It's a massive understatement to say that I was SHOCKED at the toxic waste that came out of me and I immediately felt 1000% better. I'm not sure I can do justice with words how much better I felt after my first cleanse. Let me say though, I consider the cleanse to have been one of the best things I've done in my entire life and it is now a part of my regular health routine.
The book is incredibly comprehensive (there are so many little tips, product recommendations (not for the author's benefit) etc. in there that may be of interest to the reader, including invaluable source lists), well researched and it's quite clear the author is writing from personal experience, it's not just something he's researched or read. Reid knows what he's talking about and has obviously made health and longevity and its study a core part of his life.
I can't highly recommend this, and his other books (Tao of Health Sex & Longevity and The Complete Book of Chinese Health & Healing) enough.
If you're looking for a comprehensive guide to cleansing, you're not going to do any better than this.
daniel reid is great!.......2005-12-19
i have read many of daniel reid's books and they are all incredibly informative and easy to understand, this book is no exception. daniel reid gives a practical way to exist in our society that's full of toxicity and periodically or daily clean or 'detoxify' ourselves. that simple act can great lenghten and improve one's life. the best part is he really gives great suggestions on methods and products people could use to detoxify. i really recommend this book for everyone.

Hate Diets, Love this Book.......2006-02-16
I HATE diets because they transform eating into an exercise in deprivation and discipline, obsession and distraction, failure and self-hatred. I LOVE this book because it transforms eating into self-discovery, pleasure, adventure, the freedom to feel, savor and experiment. Whenever the thought of eating, or not eating, becomes stressful for me, I re-read a few sections to remind myself of the sort of relationship that I have discovered I want to have with food, and to re-establish that relationship.
Bringing Awareness to the Dinner Table.......2006-02-02
Elizabeth Terp offers a new version of the Tao Te Ching specifically designed for those of us whose unconscious approach to eating undermines our health and self-image. The book is packed with insight, and guides us toward the innate wisdom of healthy habits. Concise, charming, and deeply thoughtful, this book is a real gem.
A LOVELY READ.......2006-02-01
THIS BOOK INTEGRATES ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY WITH CURRENT DIETARY CONCERNS AND PROVIDES NEW IDEAS FOR HOW WE APPROACH OUR DAILY FOOD INTAKE. IT IS SUPPORTIVE, SOOTHING AND AN EASY READ WITH LOVELY VISUAL ALLUSIONS CONTAINED IN THE COMMENTARIES.
IT IS, AS I SAID IN THE TITLE, A LOVELY READ, EVEN IF ONE WERE NOT SEARCHING FOR "THE DIET".
Less is More.......2005-10-04
If you are looking for a diet book, then this isn't it. The main message of the book is that in order to gain a peaceful relationship with food, you have to ignore all the outside influences and observe your own reactions, both positive and negative, to the foods you eat. This book provides good "food for thought" and has been helpful for me in considering a new perspective to overcome my food obsession and overeating tendencies. It is written in a daily meditation format with the ideas coming from the Tao and applied to our ways of eating. I found an overall theme about food and eating is that when in doubt, leave it out. You will be more fulfilled with less.

Book Description
"Our diet-obsessed culture," observes psychologist and eating disorder specialist Dr. Harper, "has robbed us of a joyful relationship with food." We are deluged by diet information-and misinformation-from doctors and scientists, to celebrities and food industry spokespeople. The pressure to diet and to avoid foods on the ever-changing forbidden list is more staggering than at any other time in history. Is it any wonder that people are either obsessed with dieting or so overwhelmed that they've simply given up? All of us born in the twentieth century have been influenced by what Dr. Harper calls the way of dieting. We've made eating into a set of rules, most often for the purpose of weight loss even though this is not the way we were meant to eat. "Our bodies tell us what they need if we are willing to listen," is Harper's reassuring message. After helping hundreds of clients take charge of their relationship with food, Dr. Harper shows how to leave the way of dieting behind.

The Help I Needed.......2005-10-04
If you have been struggling with on and off dieting and food obsession, this book is a great tool to start on the road to normal eating. The book is not a diet book but a way of living. Many people I know, including myself, read this book more than once as it provides such valuable tools of self discovery. This book is for the individual that has had enough of the diets and wants to come to a sense of peace about their relationship with food and the daily choices they make. I highly recommend this book if you are ready to find a peaceful way to live for the rest of your life.
another clap trap diet.......2005-04-27
Don't want to believe in nutrition? Don't want to believe that extra calories cause weight gain? Want to believe that you can eat whatever makes you feel good without suffering consequences? Then here's a book for you.
wasted time.......2003-04-22
Time spent reading this book and following its tenets is time that has been wasted. The ideas in this book will lead to obesity and lack of self-assuredness. The author claims that one eat and become healthly just by paying attention to one's cravings.
Fat Acceptance.......2002-02-13
Call this book "how to get fatter without hardly trying". A feel-good bromide for those without willpower.
Sorry folks - this ain't the Holy Grail!.......2000-06-16
After reading and dismissing this book a year ago, I read all the reviews and testimonials posted here and decided to give it another look. But no matter HOW many friends and relatives write to laud this book, the truth is that it offers no new insight or guidance for those seeking relief from their obsessions with eating, starving, OR compulsive overeating. The author offers the same old platitudes about "enjoying the moment", but what good does that do? It's an empty book, full of ephemeral promises and platitudes but nothing solid to build on or learn from. Save your money and your time - you don't need THIS claptrap!

A must own book for vegetarians and gourmands alike.......2005-11-26
I have had to buy this book three times - it gets worn out quickly because out of all the cookbooks I own (and I do have a lot), this one gets the MOST use. There is a marvelous variety of recipes - everything from pastas, soups and salads to ethnic fare such as Mexican and Japanese.
I especially like the soup recipes - often you'll find a pot boiling in my house. And usually, the recipe will come from Tao of Cooking. The Cuban Black Bean Soup is divine! You'll also enjoy the Split Pea, Lentil, Czechoslovakian Mushroom and the Barley Mushroom Soups as well.
I feel that the Tao of Cooking exposes even an experienced cook to a variety of interesting food. This book taught me how to make gnocchi, chocolate babka and ratatouille as well as other yummy things. I often feel that this book never got the attention that it deserved - it seems as if other vegetarian books got a lot more praise. Which is a tragedy, since this is the only vegetarian book that I feel is not only without gimmicks but is truly full of life. Not redundant at all like some of the others out there.
Absolutely the best.......2003-09-15
Other than Crescent Dragonwagon's work, this is undoubtedly among the best vegetarian cookbooks ever produced, and a must-have.
As a kid, I was fortunate enough to be able to eat at the Tao and occasionally get my hands on a piece of cake from Rudi's... Fortunately, they live on in any kitchen with this cookbook and an even moderately competent cook. :-)
Wonderful, overlooked classic.......2002-10-04
This fabulous vegetarian cookbook has, unfortunately, been overshadowed by better known ones coming out of Moosewood, Greens, etc., but anyone who loves food, vegetarian or not, will probably adore this book. It's absolutely terrific. Unlike a lot a vegetarian recipes, these are very finely tuned, even subtle. They aren't the easiest meals to put together, but the work is well worth it. The recipes are constructed with a wonderful eye to fresh ingredients complexly combined, and it covers everything from breakfast to desserts. The cornmeal pancakes remain the best I've ever had; salads are excellent; and the soups just as good. I really love this book and would never be without it.
I love this cookbook.......1999-03-23
This is a wonderful vegetarian cookbook. The recipes are pretty simple and easy to follow, but absolutely delicious and mostly call for fairly ordinary ingredients. The recipes are also reasonable -- you don't need to devote a whole day to cooking a tasty meal without meat. I have had and loved this book for about 10 years now, and it's so splattered and worn that I've decided I need a new copy. This is one of my favorite cookbooks ever.
