A masterpiece of practical philosophy, this is the manual composed by Lao Tzu for China's rulers to help them enhance interpersonal relationships and cultivate the enduring qualities of leadership.
Customer Reviews:
Of the few books you must own, this is one of them .......2007-03-16
I bought an older edition of this book years ago, and its time I pay tribute to the author for his remarkable work. Like many others, I have read several versions of the Tao Te Ching, and I think R L Wing's The Tao of Power is definitely the best, quite simply because his commentaries and explanations are easy to understand yet sharp and to the point. Wing's commentaries are so good that the reader will be inclined to read them first, before going through the original text of the Tao Te Ching.
Quite frankly, I think Wing's interpretation of this Chinese classic should be required reading at every school.
I also have Wing's other book - The Art of Strategy, which is Sunzi's Art of War, again nothing but praise. I've been searching more of Wing's books over the years, I sincerely hope he keeps up his excellent work and release more books.
WOW!.......2007-02-16
I bought this book not knowig what to expect. I just did a lookup on Leadership and it came up. Then I thought, what not.
What I found was the Tao! A philosophy that is life changing; I recommended this wonderful translation by R.L. Wing to anyone who wants to see truth. It is the best translation that I have read of the Tao Te Ch'ing.
To Start My Day It Is Great.......2007-02-03
It is a perfect read for getting ready for work. Gives me a sense of calm and purpose.
Change the way you look at the world.......2006-03-14
The author of Tao Te Ching can never be found out with a hundred percent surety. But what is said is important not the one who said it. Tao Te Ching is basically a book that has great philosophical depth. Only religious books like "Bhagavad Geeta", "The Bible", "The Quran", "The Dhammapada" come close to Tao Te Ching. I personally feel The Bhagavad Geeta comes closest to this work. It is always a good idea to read these books in comparison. When you read the books in comparison, you will understand what the books are saying. What is clear in one book may not be clear in the other or vice-versa. Or you might find it easier to understand in another book. For example, there is a line in Tao Te Ching That says "Act without action." It needs great insight to explain that line. The Bhagavad Geeta speaks of acting without expecting reward. It should be understood that Lord Krishna or whoever wrote the Geeta is not talking about philanthropy. It is to act from a state where the one who is acting does not exist but the action goes through him. And since the actual "actor" does not exist he is not worried about the result or reward. I request you to read the books, "Tao Te Ching" { R.L. Wing's version is very good.} The Bhagavad Geeta { Paramahansa Yogananda's Translation is very good } & Be As You Are: The Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi (Penguin Books). I am sure you will never regret buying these books and if you read them properly they will change the way you look at the world.
An old friend.......2001-08-03
I honestly can't say I've read many books that "changed my life" but I can't help saying that when I talk about this book. I'll spare you from any details about my personal life, but when I first read "The Tao of Power" ten years ago, it had a profound affect on me. At some points it seemed to state obsevations that I myself had recently made. At other times it seemed to answer many of the questions that had been consuming my waking hours. I can't say for sure that it was this book that forced me to change the direction of my life, but it will always be attached to many of the better decisions I made during that period.
I've bought and read many copies of the Tao te Ching over the years, but this translation reamins my favorite. It's well organized, easy to read, and has the best footnotes and translations available. Mr. Wing reduces his own comments to notes at the bottom of each page, leaving more room for illustrations and calligraphy. To me this shows his respect for the asthetics of the work itself.
Most other translations spend too much time in thesis and not enough time showing the beauty and power of the work. One of the beauties is it's simplicity. An individual could spend years deciphering this work, and many have, but I prefer to draw my own conclusions. R.L. Wing offers insights and explanation without forcing many of his own beliefs on the reader. Granted he does try to show practical day to day applications, but it's subtle enough to be forgiven.
I will always have a fondness for this book that extends past "a good read". Undoubtedly, most of you won't feel the same way I do, but if you manage to get a fraction of what I got from it, it will be worth your while.

Book Description
This extraordinary collection of teachings and commentaries illuminates the many profound mysteries of inner alchemy, one of the most important dimensions of the Taoist tradition. The science of inner alchemy consists of meditation practices that enable the individual to have a more intimate, energizing, and inspiring relationship with life. Although these techniques are described in the sourcebooks of ancient Taoism, they are often couched in cryptic symbolic language, making it difficult for today's seekers t put these teachings into practice. Some classical Taoist writers, however, did adopt a more explicit manner of expression. Practical Taoism is a collection of writings from these more accessible commentators on the traditional alchemical texts, compiled by a seventh-generation master of the Northern Branch of the Complete Reality School of Taoism known as the Preserver of Truth.
Customer Reviews:
another classic rendered for our sake.......2000-08-19
I found this collection of translations to be very helpful. I read Cleary's books from a student's perspective and not from a Taoist scholar's perspective. The insights gleaned from this book are priceless. It is a great wonder how our present age and society has fallen into such a moral decline even though these scriptures have been around since man's early days. Read and apply. These teachings may seem cryptic but they turn into truths once they are applied to our lives.
Practical Taoism by Tom Cleary.......2000-07-04

Book Description
The Lieh-tzu is a collection of stories and philosophical musings of a sage of the same name who lived around the fourth century BCE. Lieh-tzu's teachings range from the origin and purpose of life, the Taoist view of reality, and the nature of enlightenment to the training of the body and mind, communication, and the importance of personal freedom. This distinctive translation presents Lieh-tzu as a friendly, intimate companion speaking directly to the reader in a contemporary voice about matters relevant to our everyday lives.
Customer Reviews:
Great material, but --.......2004-12-08
Lao Tzu, the first author of Taoism, described abstruse, metaphorical scenes in abstruse language. Chuang Tzu uses prosaic descriptions, but still described philosophical ideal rather than gritty facts. Lieh Tzu came later. He used prosaic words to describe prosaic, everyday scenes, and to find enlightenment in them.
Many ring true for me. The "yellow mare" reminded me of a technician who was finely attuned to the circuits we used. He was always wrong in his diagnosis onf the problems he showed me. That never mattered. He was always right in pointing out that there was a problem, often based on small clues that I might have missed.
Lieh discusses honesty and friendship, poverty and happiness, great riches and death. Still, the language is always modern and clear, and a good supplement to Chuang and Lao.
My problem, though, is that this isn't a translation. It's Wong's interpretation. She says, early on, "Instead of a straight translation of the sematics of the text, I have decided to present the 'voice' of Lieh Tzu." As much as I like Wong's text, it troubles me. Translation is never exact, but there are degrees of inexactness. I am concerned about how much Lieh's text has suffered.
This is good anyway, and I'll probably come back to it eve if I find a more scholarly Lieh Tzu. This is readable and thought-provoking, no matter what it's authenticity.

Great.......2004-07-17
The Lieh Tzu is truly one of the most magnificent works of all time. I enjoyed it just as much as the Taoist centerpiece text the Tao Te Ching, and much more than than the Chuang Tzu, another widely ready Taoist classic.
Keep in mind that this edition of the Lieh Tzu is not a direct translation; rather, it is Eva Wong's version that is a generally a very loose translation and interpretation.
I actually prefer this edition slightly more than other more literal translations (by AC Graham [entire text], Lionel Giles [roughly 1/3 of the text], and Anton Forke [Yang Chu chapter].
The Lieh Tzu is for the most part a series of philosophical tales and essays. Though it is categorized as Taoist, it most likely incorporates material from a fairly wide variety of sources.
Overall the text is very interesting, and truly a must read not just for fans of Taoism, but for virtually anybody else.
Also see my review of AC Graham's translation.
Rodney Ohebsion
Enjoyable Retelling.......2004-05-01
One point that should be clarified about this book is that it is not a direct translation of Lieh Tzu. In the intro, the author explains that her goal was to "open up" the text for modern Western readers by essentially retelling the stories in her own way. This is a perfectly valid approach, of course, since she is open about it. In some cases, her renditions sharpen the point and even improve the literary quality of the original. In others, she may have reduced some quirkiness of the original in deference to political correctness, or may have added influences from later Taoist thought. This is a good edition to read for contemplation, but if you are interested in the history of Taoist thought at all, stick with A.C. Graham's more literal translation.
A Great Taoist Work.......2002-08-03
The Lieh Tzu is the one of the less known Taoist classics, yet perhaps the most accessable and enjoyable one. It's a collection of 111 stories said to be by the noted scholar Leih-Tzu around the fourth century BCE. (Who's it really by? Who knows? And who cares?)
The stories cover a variety of topics, such as choosing what is important, how to lead a group of people, archery, choosing ones targets well, Confucius, why one chooses to be a Taoist, and much more.
My favorite quote is "Enlightenment is a very normal experience, attainable by everyone. Therefore, there is nothing mysterious or secretive about it."
A simply wonderful, tranquil book that is enjoyable to read and contemplate.
An "opening" by the translator..........2000-05-28
...of the Taoist classic fables, all of which can be read as simple stories or wells of wisdom. I particularly like the tales of the Yellow Emperor.

The Tao of Womanhood is for every woman who is searching for both external power and internal peace. A spiritual resource that combines the wisdom of the Tao Te Ching with straightforward advice and illuminating anecdotes, The Tao of Womanhood is a prescriptive, practical road map. This is a wonderful, wonderful book. I'm not quite sure what else to say about it since it has been so long since I last read it. It was a book highly conducive to midnight epiphanies, and really helped frame my search for an effective way to live and understand my life.
Inspirational guide for balancing your life........1998-11-23
Draws upon the Tao Te Ching and the practice of aikido to illustrate a balanced approach to life. Includes chapters on transforming challenge and conflict into harmony, respecting the natural cycles of life, and overcoming feelings of powerlessness in order to find a more active, powerful approach to life. I've been curious about the martial arts and really enjoyed the parallels the author makes between spiritual growth and aikido. Gave me a new perspective on the issue of balance.

Book Description
The term "mentor" dates back to ancient Greece when Odysseus first entrusted his friend Mentor with the education of his son, but the practice has existed in virtually every culture in history. Today, mentoring is one of the most talked-about concepts in business, education and sports. Now Tao Mentoring reinterprets and revitalizes the concept of mentoring by incorporating the ancient Taoist teachings of balanced give and take, self-reflection, simplicity, openness to others, and sharing of ourselves.
Outlined in brief, browsable sections--each of which opens with a single principle shown in text and elegant Chinese and English calligraphy--Tao Mentoring draws upon parables, contemporary anecdotes, examples from such classics as the Tao Te Ching and The Art of War, as well as the authors' own successful partnership. It offers a practical and insightful introduction to an entirely new way of seeing and participating in our work, families, friendships, and communities.

Brian Luke's book combines timeless wisdom with practical solutions for rising above the stresses of daily life. His tender and humorous writing style gently reconnects the reader with the very essence of bliss and creativity. If you're seeking ways to rediscover your own sense of inner peace, this is a marvelous read.
Jumbled, vague and uninspired.......2006-09-06
This book makes claim of an attempt to integrate Taoism and Joeseph Campbell's research into the substrates of mythology. I have interest in both Taoism and Campbell's writings but found nothing compelling or particularly interesting about this book. It seems to me bite-sized tidbits and antedotes of reactions to things the author heard on NPR, factoids and loosely illustrative personal accounts comprise the bulk of this book. These choppy paragraghs of "insight" are just a fuzzy nebula of the degree to which these ideologies can be overlaid. Associations do not necessarily cohere. While some bits may be thought provoking, most of the text is New Age/Self-Help pulp which tries to incorporate and transcend Eastern Philosohpys, doing justice to neither. There's a good amount of poised ego and hubris in the voice of the author, which doesn't feel Taoist. I see the author at Vic's Espresso in Boulder, sitting and having epiphanies into his laptop. Good for him.

A fun motivational book--to this day the phrase "I am a sales dragon, a master of the marketplace" brings good thoughts. It certainly doesn't share any great secrets, but it's fun to see the same old sales mantras in a different format.
Wonderful!.......2000-02-02
What a wonderful approach to achieving your best. Sales Dragon is a must read -- after all, everyone is in sales!
FUN!.......2000-01-09
Sales Dragon is wise, fun, and an excellent way to change your sales habits for the better. We all need a fresh approach and here it is!
A fascinating book........2000-01-05
John Scevola has written a fascinating book of timeless wisdom that is as relevant to today's salesperson as it was to the ancient emperors. I predict that most salespeople will keep it close by and refer to it often.

Book Description
At last, a readable, entertaining, and practical real estate guide—the perfect companion for women intent on buying a home.
Once a week, six women living in Los Angeles meet to read from the Tao te Ching and reflect on their lives. One subject arises over and over: the dream of owning a home. One by one they take on the real estate market. They discover, among themselves, great reservoirs of expertise and experience that keep them sane—and laughing—along the way. Now, the Tao Girls want to share that expertise and experience with women who find themselves similarly confused, frustrated, or disappointed.
The Tao Girl’s Guide to Real Estate offers a way to keep your head through it all, to eliminate that sense of helplessness, overwhelming tension, and emotional fatigue so often a part of finding a home. In telling their lively and often amusing personal stories, the Tao Girls also deliver a terrific dose of practical advice for buying any house—from the smallest condo to a suburban family dream house.

What a great tool!.......2006-03-24
This book has given me some valuable information and insider tips about
buying a house, all written in a way that I can really relate to as a single woman.
It has given me confidence, and also makes me feel better equipped to deal with whats coming in my house hunt. It's like having an understanding girlfriend with you all the time - one who knows all about real estate!
I definitely recommend it!
The Quintessential Guide to Real Estate Written by Women for Women!.......2006-03-22
If you're thinking about buying a home don't do anything until you've read this wonderful book! The strength of this book is the collective experience, wisdom, and heart with which the information is shared. It really appeals to the way women think and learn.
I usually find how-to books dry and difficult to absorb, but The Tao Gal's Guide to Real Estate presents practical information on everything from finding the right real estate agent, to qualifying for a mortagage, and surviving escrow in a straightforward, easy-to-understand way.
The authors, Bernadette Murphy and Michelle Huneven, share their personal real estate stories as well as the stories of the other women in their Tao Gal's group, which is a group of six women who meet weekly and read from the spiritual text, the Tao te Ching.
My favorite part of this book was the way the authors told a personal story and incorporated the spiritual wisdom of the Tao te Ching along with practical advice on how to handle one of the most stressful events in life.
At the end of each chapter, they include a Tao worksheet that addresses the emotional aspects and anxiety behind buying a home. I felt very comforted by the information and the way it's written made me feel like I was a member of their group.
There's a wonderful glossary at the back as well.
This well researched book succeeds because the practical information is coupled with spiritual wisdom and it's written in an entertaining, heart warming, revelatory voice that celebrates the incredible strength of women and the power of community!
It's very satisfying and I highly recommend it!
Real Estate for Humans.......2006-03-01
As a man who, with my wife, has bought two homes in the past five years, I wish this wonderful book had been available to us before we did so. I've gamely waded through tomes offering financial advice before, but this is altogether different, a book about real estate that is built on storytelling -- with narrative skills reflecting the literary pedigrees of its co-authors. It's quite serious and ultimately decodes the daunting abracadabra of escrow fees and loan packages, but meanwhile it's a great read! The title could just as easily be "Real Estate for Humans."
An invaluable asset - this book!.......2006-01-25
I recently got The Tao Gals Guide to Real Estate in the mail and couldn't put it down. I had millions of things to do but I just could not put it down.
In my life I have bought three houses. The first house I was a single woman. The next two houses I was married. However, being married did not make the process any easier on any level.
Once again, I find myself single and deciding whether to buy or not to buy.
Fortunately, reading The Tao Gals Guide to Real Estate let me go through the entire "deciding to buy, house hunting, buying, refurbishing," process without having to do it all again.
This deeply personal book helped me take a look at the financial, spiritual, and mental health considerations when buying a home. Yet, there is a nuts and bolts aspect to the book that I desperately needed.
Thanks to this guide - the personal stories, tragedies, successes, and work sheets- I could make a rational decision. I now know what it would REALLY cost. I was able to make a decision that is based in reality and not fear.
Because the women in the book were so honest and clear about their journeys it helped me with mine.
This book is invaluable!
