Book Description
Used by its readers as an oracle, this book, based on the terminology used in the classic Wilhelm/Baynes translation, puts the I Ching into modern language. This allows its wisdom to be applied to the situations of everyday life. Decoded are words such as "the superior man," the "inferior man," "the inferiors," and the "faithful followers," which refer respectively to the true self, the ego, the bodily self, and aspects of character such as patience and perseverance. Expressions such as "crossing the great water," and "seeing the great man," are seen to mean getting past the danger of giving up on oneself, and remembering the potential for good in every person. Understanding such words and phrases occurs in the context of the entire wisdom of the I Ching which counsels those who consult it to follow their innermost feelings, as these bring one into harmony with the ever-loving Cosmos and its protective powers. Judging by the more than 4000 letters written by its readers, this book has been used by adults from all occupations and beliefs as a self-help spiritual guide and educator of the truths of life.

Excellent!.......2007-06-25
This book is amazing and has helped me to understand the passages of the I-Ching. Everything within the book has provided me with practical approaches to mundane/spiritual issues. It also has peaked my interest in purchasing yarrow sticks and the Wilheim book that Ms. Anthony sites as helpful to her own studies.
Again, this book will prove helpful in learning more about I-Ching (this is my first book on it)and furthering the ongoing spiritual journey.
Yes!.......2006-11-04
I never give top billing to anything - there is always room for improvement. That being said, this is a great guide to the sometimes confusing realm of the I Ching. Clear spiritual insight, coupled with current understandable language makes this an essential companion to whatever other volume one uses to connect with the Power of the Universe. Let it be!
This very positive attitude towards Divine life help is good........2006-08-29
The most prominent idea I came away with from reading this version of the I Ching is 'not to give up on anyone'; remain open minded and accepting. One never knows when, but that the good will happen is reassuring.
An easier I Ching.......2006-03-20
This is a great version of the I Ching! Carol Anthony takes the sometimes difficult to understand messages of the I Ching and turns them into plain english. Very good for beginners, or for anyone who wishes to get the full message of the I Ching without doing all the interpretation.
I-Ching is KING.......2005-03-20
I have been consulting the sage, through this book for 7 years and have sporatically used other texts in addition. This text wipes them all out. It is well written and makes sense.
It's ideas and terms have become apart of my everyday thinking and I am totally happy with it. The sage has rebuffed me many times when ignoring it's friendly advice and this book helps me to understand why.
I have studied Buddhism just as long and though I am not a big fan of TAOIST beliefs- I do whole hardedly believe in Wu Wei as a way of living my life. After all these years I sometimes barely need to consult the book cuz I can imagine what the sage would say and I try to act accordingly, however hard it may be.
The I-Ching is not for prediciting events exactly but can give a vague idea how you are doing on your path. I read this book and have no questions as to what the author is trying to put across. I sometimes think she IS the I-Ching!

A Treasure.......2007-04-10
I decided on Brian Browne Walker's version of the I Ching because I have gotten so much out of his translation of the Tao Te Ching. And I have not been dissapointed. Far from it, right now I am ordering a copy for my brother.
His interpretations are so clear, easy to read and insightful, one could easily read it strictly as a spirtiual/ philosophical document without even using it as it was intended.
For years I was a bit awed and intimidated by the I Ching as something very arcane and difficult to use. I couldn't have been further from the truth. Its SO simple and SO profound and often SO spot on. (Several times when deep down I knew I was putting forth a silly inquiry, number 4--"Youthful Folly" often came up. You can appreciate the joke if you know the Hex I am talking about).
This is an amazing book translated by a wise man. Get it!
I've looked for more elsewhere, but it is all here!.......2005-11-28
This was my first I Ching book. I bought it having no idea what it was. I was bored, yet longing at the same time. So, I figured I would purchase an Eastern Philosophy book.
I grew to love the readings and found them to apply very closely to my days at large. I would carry the book with me all day and read my daily 'reading'. I was amazed at how easy it was to read and how well it related to life.
After a while I decided I wanted to expand my knowledge of the I Ching. I bought a number of other books. They were more literal interpretations. I found them all to be lacking spirit, though. And, I returned to Walker's book.
Even for the skeptical and practical, the sixty-four readings flow like prose and offer a spring-board for healthy self-examination and awareness. Thank you, Brian!
A great interpretation of a classic book.......2005-10-16
For anyone just beginning their studies in the I-Ching, or those who are more experienced and rely on this oracle regulary, this book is wonderful.
Brian Browne Walker's interpretation of this amazing resource falls perfectly between being too difficult for the average user to understand, and being so "dumbed down" that someone experienced with the I-Ching would find it useless. It provides just as much information is neccesary, in a clear and consistent manner. It begins with a brief section explaining the history and importance of this resource, then gives clear instructions for it's use, followed by a hexagram chart and hexagram descriptions, and another hexagram chart is included on the last page for easy reference. I highly recommend this resource to anyone who wants to begin their studies in the I-Ching, or anyone who wants a reliable copy to rely on for regular use.
Guidance for Daily Life.......2004-09-14
For over a year I've been practicing the spirtual beliefs of the I Ching through this book, and I've yet to find a better translation of it's teachings. Frustrating as the teachings are (in that they are so simple, plain, and seemingly obvious), once you begin to cultivate the teachings, you cultivate the superiors in yourself, and as long as you follow the path of the Sage, you will see the change in yourself, and thusly, the change in your environment and those around you.
A Saramental Tool.......2004-05-16
I purchased this book several months ago based on the Customer Reviews. It has had a profound effect on my life. Its answers are consistently amazing, deep, nuanced response to my situation. Thanks to the reviewers who took the time to respond--but a special thanks to Brian Browne Walker.
Book Description
The Complete Idiot's Guide to the I Ching addresses many questions: What is the I Ching? Who wrote it? How does it work? How is an oracle written 3,00 years ago relevant to the modern world? How can I use the I Ching to answer a question, concern, or dilemma? How does the I Ching relate to chaos theory, theoretical physics, psychology, and mathematics?
In The Complete Idiot's Guide to the I Ching, you'll learn that this revered work is not just a silly book of fortune-telling, a superstitious relic catering to the gullible and vulnerable. Rather, you'll come to understand the I Ching is a profound work grounded in science and mathematics. That somehow, magically and mysteriously, it connects us with the universe (or what you may choose to call the great unknown, the sea of consciousness, the spirit world, God) to provide a meaningful answer that speaks to our situation.
Customer Reviews:
An enjoyable and ideal guide to the I-Ching........2007-09-02
I finally found a copy of this book.Knowing how good these "Complete idiots" series books are this book is just what I had hoped for.
This book explains I-Ching in simple to understand English with some technical explanations throughout. An ideal book for anyone even if you are just starting to learn I-Ching.Its is an enjoyable read. One of the most enjoyable I-Ching books I own.
Each hexagram is covered by a double page and covered in great detailed but doesnt drag on.Step by step instructions, advice on what kinds of questions to ask and how to interpret your reading.Even has a section on Feng Shui.I like the hexagram reference section at the front of the book,in colour too.Nice touch. One of the more thorough books on I-Ching.
I hope the publishers reprint this book.
Comprehensive and thoroughly enjoyable.......2004-08-07
Elizabeth Moran and Master Joseph Yu did a wonderful job in writing "The Complete Idiot's Guide to The I Ching". Yijing is a powerful divination tool in traditional Chinese culture. It has been intriguing and difficult to understand thoroughly. This book is well organized in explaining from the historical background to tts modern day application, as well as how to utilize the knowledge further to open our mind and improve our life. It is thoroughly enjoyable reading. Thank you for a job well done.
Very well written book about the I Ching.......2004-07-12
Usually, the "Complete Idiot's" and "Dummies" books give you the basic information on their subject, with some depth, but nothing too encompassing. I was very surprised with this book -- it gives in-depth information about the I Ching and its history, as well as touching upon other things like synchronicity. The translation of the I Ching included in the book is also rather well done, and better than some stand-alone translations (for example, "The Taoist I Ching"). I learned a lot about the I Ching from this book. Recommended.
Simplicity and completeness.......2003-03-26
While new to I Ching, I find myself fortunate to find this work. It brings a structured simplicity with comprehensiveness that is essential in order to give the I Ching veracity and approachability. Excellent.
Blessèd Idiocy!.......2002-05-07
For the past 25 or so years I have been failing to make head nor tail of the Yi Jing. My studies suggested and my intuition told me, that there was something very significant to be found there but the text, though it seemed to provide many glimpses of relevance and truth, always slipped back into obscure regions peopled only by erudite sinologists... and where these luminaries sometimes seem to have slight differences of criterion (the things Mr Cleary says about R.Wilhelm!).
There was nothing for it but to declare myself a Complete Idiot - something which had been staring me in the face for longer than I like to think - and this very Daoist act of auto-abasement was rewarded by a version of the Yi Jing, or rather the Zhouyi (its wings having been usefully clipped of Confucian confusion) which at last made sense. Sense not only for the clarity of the translation (or transliteration or whatever) but by the meaning and coherence of the text.
The sensation is rather like having a plaster removed from a broken limb.
I would like to recommend the book to anyone who wants a clear, manageable and simple (but not simplistic) version of the background to and wisdom of this classic.
Five Stars! Bravo! and Many Thanks to Ms Moran and Master Yu!

Two different titles and covers but the SAME text.......2007-03-14
First, you should be aware that this book and THE I CHING PLAIN AND SIMPLE by Stephen Karcher are exactly the same book and so, if you have one, you may not want a second.
PLAIN AND SIMPLE has a very different cover - orange with the I Ching lines.
Second, as soon as I opened it in the store, the language with which it described the hexagrams was obviously so much more accessible than that of other books I have looked at by the same author. If you are new to I Ching as I am, this makes a big difference.
Great.......2007-02-01
This book is clear, concise, simple yet profound. I recommend this book to anyone , regardless of skill level
A quick-fix pocketbook for rushed people.......2002-03-29
Karcher has managed to produce an acceptable introduction which stays clear of Wilhelm & Neo-Confucian dribble. Richard John Lynn's translation is more scholarly, but when you're in a quandry or rush Karcher's will do for the moment.
A word of warning, however. When describing the coin toss, Karcher mistakes the head for the tail on the old cash. The inscribed side of the coin should be counted as a yin (2) and the blank reverse of a Chinese coin as yang (3). Ooops.
An Excellent Starting Place.......2001-07-13
I disagree with Bothell, WA. This is an excellent starting point for the I Ching.
The introduction alone is the best you will probably find among the translations and commentaries out there.
One of the keys to a good translation is that it is VERSATILE. A good I Ching allows for multiple interpretations given your question and circumstances. I find that many Western commentaries are too narrow and almost always focus on the spiritual or relationships too much. This version can answer those same questions, of course, but it can be used for any other inquiry you will have. It is what I wish had been my starting point.
You will at some point need to get a true translation like Alfred Huang's, but if you are getting started, you need to start here. I would also recommend R. L. Wing's Workbook as an excellent starting point, too.
My only complaint is that the cover is horrible. The I Ching is an important and enlightened book. It is meant to be revered. The cover on this one is a publisher's choice I am sure. A simple cover with the Yin/Yang symbol and simply "The I Ching" is all that is required. "How To Use" smacks of that Complete Idiot's Guide mentality. I hope the publishers change this.
Other than that, I stand by my statements. This is a very good version.
good if you have prior experience with the I Ching.......2000-11-03
The title should be How to use the I Ching if you have experience with the I Ching. It is a nice book if you use it as a supplement to other books. There are much better books than this one if you want an easy to use guide to the I Ching.
Book Description
The I Ching, translated variously as the Book of Changes or the Classic of Change, is perhaps the oldest writing on philosophy, cosmology, divination and self -transformation in Chinese civilization. It is one of the treasures of ancient Chinese literature, used as a divinatory tool as well as an instrument to develop intuition and perception. The I Ching Workbook provides a fascinating overview of the I Ching including its history and legend, the symbolism of the 8 trigrams of natural energy, the meanings of the oracles of the 64 hexagrams, and methods for casting the I Ching. This illustrated workbook also explores the connections between the I Ching, oriental philosophy, and Chinese astrology, making it appropriate for beginners but also rich enough for devotees wishing to expand their knowledge of this fascinating subject.
Customer Reviews:
Attractive, easy to use guide.......2006-12-17
As a novice to I Ching studies, this is my favorite of the I Ching handbooks. It is designed so that the learner can become familiar with the energy and tone of each trigram and includes encouraging, simple meditative exercises to draw out the reader's own intuitive wisdom.
It begins with a basic introduction to the Oracle, teaches one how to throw coins or sticks & how to ask appropriate questions. Trigrams are the building blocks of hexagrams, and understanding their resonances is invaluable for divination beyond relying on an author's interpretation of a hexagram. This workbook provides detailed and interesting explanations for each. Changing lines are also simply explained and interpreted. There is a handy-to-use hexagram chart on the back of the last page - no hunting around for it.
The 'cookbook' pages are also satisfying, again drawing attention to the elemental energy embodied in each hexagram and giving practical advice in plain English.
This is not the most academic workbook out there, as it does not include line by line translations of the Oracle and rather focuses on elemental harmony or dissonance.
The book itself is refreshingly pleasing aesthetically and easy to use. The folded paperback cover feels good in your hands, pages are a heavy stock and information is attractively laid out. Appropriate to give as a gift.

Dr. Wang Yang summarizes the well-known Classical Method for an intuitive insight into prediction, and then goes on to explain both the Mei Hua method and the Na Jia method.
Customer Reviews:
AN excellent book for studying the ICHING the best one!!.......2005-03-29
Im sorry michael but maybe you have no background of the I ching calculations. The problems with the pages you mention are that, they were dividing the numbers according to the number and has a remainder. It is impossible for you to calculate the I ching in decimals. As i have some feng shui background and i ching masters to assist me it is the way of calculating. I wish i could contact you but some how amazon does not let me. Well hopefully they send this to you and remove your post because it is nonsense.
This book is the best book out there for learning the I ching. It gives you three methods of prediction. No other book has this. It has broaden my understanding it and has helped me throughout. I deeply recommend it. 100% guarantee. I pity the author and for the people who have read the review before mine. It will discourage you but ill tell you if you dont know how to calculate the number you can always email me howe_85@yahoo.co.uk
Watch for Mistakes in this book!.......2004-05-18
I bought "The Authentic I Ching" based on the other review found here and found it interesting, though it seems to contain errors. For example, the author describes a way to determine trigrams by calculating numbers but when you check his math his answers aren't right (check pages 73, 90, 96, etc).
Also, on page 66, the authors use an example from the book "Three Kingdoms." The heading entitled "Case 3. The Death of a Martial God," He states Master Yu Fan (Actually "Lu" Fan) cast hexagram number 60 with changing lines and states that Lu Fan thought General Guan would be killed two days later.
Actually, if you read San Guo Yan Yi (Three Kingdoms) the hexagram cast was #7 (earth over water) and Lu Fan said it signifies "an enemy fleeing northwest..."
Though General Guan does get captured and dies, it appears to me the author twisted a story and changed the trigrams to fit his needs.
He also gives examples of prediction based on events that already happened. Well, hindsight is easy. However, when he discusses that all presidents since Lincoln who are elected in a 20 year cycle have died he doesn't take a venture at what will happen to Bush. I'd be more impressed with the author if he made a prediction - before something happened instead of after.
Last of all, the authors give email addresses to contact them but the Chinese author's email addresses are no good and the English author doesn't respond. So much for answering questions.
As I said, interesting and potentially valuable information but with mistakes in the book you may waste your time and money reading it.
Outstanding. A Breakthrough Book.......2003-06-13
Congradulations to Wang Yang and Jon Sandifer for writing a clear, user-friendly book on classic and powerful I Ching prediciton methods. This is the first book that allows the western to apply these methods immediately. This is an outstanding book, revealing professional level I Ching divination and theory. I recommend this book to anybody interested in Taoist Arts and Chinese Metaphysics.
This is the best book in English on this topic.

This Book Should Be In Print Again..........2006-10-13
The I Ching (pronounced "yi jing"; it means "Book of Changes") is an ancient Chinese divinatory oracle, as well as a classic account of the philosophy of ancient China. The text contains 64 different "situations", each represented by a figure of six lines (called "hexagrams"). The trigrams making up the hexagram can be either Heaven, Lake, Fire, Thunder, Wind, Water, Mountain, or Earth. A question can be directed to the I Ching by the consultant, and an appropriate hexagram is derived either from the method described in this book (flipping coins) or through the traditional method of casting yarrow stalks. The hexagram is considered to be appropriate to your current situtation and suggests advice on the course of action that you should take. On its own, the I Ching is interesting, though somewhat archaic and obscure if you are trying to really gain a deeper insight into its meanings. Many other commentaries on the I Ching are also available (I recommend Carol K. Anthony's "A Guide to the I Ching", as well), but I find R. G. H. Siu's book particularly enjoyable.
Unlike many other I Ching commentaries, "The Portable Dragon" can either be used for further explanation for using the I Ching as an oracle or read (with great interest) from beginning to end. The full, translated text of each portion of the I Ching hexagrams are given, along with passages from literature relating to the concept involved. Poetry and prose from all around the world is included to better illustrate the examples of each situation. A variety of authors, from well-known to fairly unknown, are represented nicely in this collection. In "The Portable Dragon", even someone who isn't planning to use the I Ching as an oracle can gain a lot of insight on philosophy and simply enjoy good literature.
Looking into the cosmic mirror.......2002-06-11
This book deserves all the praise it has received elsewhere. While the basic pattern or cycles involved are based on the format of the classical Yi Ching, it was a stroke of genius to 'flesh out' the various archetypal situations depicted in the line-texts, with quotations drawn from the world's literature (most reviewers have stressed 'Western' literature, but in fact,
many quotations are drawn from 'ethnic' sources (e.g. Chinese, African, Eskimoo etc. - in English translation).
Initially, I was disappointed with this book - after acquiring the Ist ed. years ago. A review had led me to believe that it was an anthology of Yi-Ching studies/commentaries, leaving me shocked to discover otherwise - a plethora of quotations - drawn from sources spanning many cultures, many centuries. As befits all oracles (usum ad delphi)the original Chinese text mostly rules out once-and-for-all, black and white definitions. The few exceptions being where and when a single 'yes' or 'no' type answer suffices. But by and large, the terseness of the Chinese text survives translation - leaving an open-ended spread of semantic possibilities - without which the intuition cannot come into play. Still, short of writing in a stilted 'pidgin' Chinglish, translating the Chinese glyphs into English (or any other Western language) necessarily involves making a choice of syntax, with tenses not there in the original. The Chinese text has a compression rather like newspaper headlines, or even an encrypted code. So, from that point of view, reducing any given line text to a black and white definition, has its price.
Be that as it may, R.G. Siu is a wonderful soul. He searched the very heart of humanity - in all its richness, triumph and tragedy - and 'just-so-ness' - when selecting his quotations, obviously a labour of love. Many, many times, I have found myself deeply moved - by the appropriateness of the quotations he has 'matched' with the Chinese line texts, resonating in real life situations - the very diversity of the sources increasing my sense of being a man among mankind, reminding me that others have known the same joys and woes, painful decisions, or even the fact that the only thing to do. . .is to wait, and let life itself produce the 'answer' to seemingly intractable situations. In fact, many of those quotations have embedded themselves in my unconscious mind, and - rather like seeds, they have re-activated themselves, speaking to me - without consulting the 'Yi' at all, which is most remarkable.
Nobody has written (or should we say 'composed') another book like it, and nobody ever will. It was a 'one-off' - a flash of inspiration, something about the 'New World' - what happens when a Chinese-American scientist with Taoist feeling and imagination finds himself looking at the Yi Ching in a 'melting pot' culture. Ten thousand people could have endeavoured to do the same thing - without the same success. The outcome could have been a hope-lessly disjointed project, but Ralph Liu's genius fused it with life - and feeling. There is something about the Chinese text and its glyphs, which has a beauty of its own. But in many cases, the nuance of some lines is not clear, minus insight into the Chinese background. Liu's text transposes these archetypal situations to a truly universal context and amplifies them in unexpected ways.A most remarkable book, by a remarkable author.
THE PORTABLE DRAGON.......2002-01-16
EXCELLENT BOOK, WORTHWHILE READING. PICK AND CHOOSE SECTIONSTO READ AND REMEMBER. I RECOMMEND VERY HIGHLY.
The Dragonýs No Drag On.......2001-02-13
This extremely well read editor has substituted mostly Western literature for the exegesis of the lines. Like in the original, these new texts are provided as mirror on which to reflect your question and search yourself for an answer, but with Western content in a Western context. This is a very avant-garde take on the I Ching. I have used it with other commentaries of the I Ching and have found there to be insight in the literature chosen to represent the line's meaning.
It is also a fine collection of literary snippets from a variety of authors you couldn't hope to read in this lifetime, except in this format. They are truly pithy sayings, in the truest sense of that word. It is very similar in content to The Practical Cogitator, but The Dragon is much more playful. Great for reading on the can, almost as good as those little space fillers in the old New Yorker.
pick it up, read it, throw it away!.......1999-07-25
An enlightening look into eastern philosophy, through the eyes and voices of the most famous western philosophers, politicains, rebels, poets, bards, playwrites, martyrs, & fools. A journey all should take. Every page reveals words an philosophies to live by, some obvious, some a tangled maze of stories and morals. Learn from it , and then throw it away and LIVE!

Simple,Direct.......2001-07-04
I love this book. It speaks in direct , everyday language anyone can understand. I have looked at alot of books on the I Ching and this is by far the best and my most favorite. There is alot of information in this small book. I highly recommend it.
The Finest Portable I Ching.......2001-03-05
Dr. Stephen Karcher has done a brilliant job adapting the I Ching oracle for modern readers. As a major contributor to the Eranos Foundation's first complete translation of the I Ching into English in the mid-Nineties, Dr. Karcher has mastered the I Ching and its subtle historical, spiritual and psychological contexts. For this slim edition, a revision of his excellent "Elements of the I Ching", he's created the finest I Ching translation for everyday use. The issue with many adaptations of the I Ching, including the venerable Wilhelm/Baynes and the Legge translations, is that the original ancient Chinese social context is kept intact, which can make such a translation very difficult to understand. Karcher writes in a clear, direct style that avoids the oblique "it serves the great man to cross the great water" style of its predecessors. Dr. Karcher has also included a new method of consulting the book, using colored glass marbles, which combines the mathematical probabilities of the laborious yarrow-stalk method of divination with the ease of use of the popular, but mathematically inaccurate, three coins method. As for the book itself, Element Books has done a beautiful production job in its choice of typefaces and paper stock. A first class effort...and a bargain, too.

The ideal book for anyone interested in I Ching........2006-05-04
I have been learning I Ching and I have found few books that I could learn from and even fewer books I could learn more from. This is one of them. The explanations are easier to understand than most books. Its a good size book with plenty of information throughout. There are 3 pages to each hexagram so you wont be reading numerous pages for each question. It even helps you with timing of any events. Its not your average book. And,its an ideal book for beginners.
As I have learnt more I have moved onto more indepth books from the ones I started with. This book is one of 3 books I use now and this book is the best book of the 3.
If you are trying to learn I Ching this book is quite suitable.I highly recommend it to everyone. Its the ideal book. This book has a lot to offer and it does so in simple terms. Most people will enjoy this book.If you like books in simple English this book is for you.

Customer Reviews:
Warning - this is a reprint.......2006-04-24
Karcher fans and new readers should be warned that this edition is a reprint of Karcher's "How To Use the I Ching," which is still available and possibly already in your collection. It's an excellent if simplified introduction and recommended for newcomers to the Yi, but you don't need two of them. If you're more experienced get Karcher's irreplaceable five-star "Total I Ching," his best and deepest version to date.
