Behold a Pale Horse.......2007-09-15
Behold a Pale Horse is a book that will stop and make you think about much that is going on in the world today. You will never look at our political leaders the same again.
Behold a pale horse.......2007-08-29
i didnt like it. it was a bunch of nonsence. i dont even want to give it a star.
Too much chaff, not enough wheat.......2007-08-17
This is the kind of book that gives historical revisionists and truthseekers a bad name--specifically the "conspiracy nut" slur. While the author may or may not be sincere, a look at the cover is enough to give you a sense of how serious or not serious a presentation is contained within. Certainly there is much about history and society that we are routinely lied to about and historical facts that are suppressed so as to protect those with the power to pull the invisible strings fettering the world. This book documents much of that, but unfortunately delves into much disinformation and in the end will leave people confused--perhaps aware of several legitimate issues they had not known about before but also distracted by a series of unfounded claims muddying the waters. I put this in the same category as the works of David Icke, of reptilian shape-shifter fame...
Informative.......2007-08-13
William Cooper did an outstand job in writing this book. He has a wealth of knowledge that will assist the reader in researching other books that supports his claims.
IN THE COLD.......2007-07-21
Not a read for anyone who doesn't know or does know what others claim or wish to know. But if you read this book and it confirms what you did know or didn't know it may be worth the time reading. However, when you do buy this unknown known it will lead others to watch you over to see what else you know and what your planing to do with what you now know.....be careful buying it, the book will lead a cloud over you.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The Tao of Equus, which literally translates as "the way of the horse," explores the possibility that horses are highly evolved, spiritual beings who offer humans opportunities for healing and personal growth. Linda Kohanov is the owner of Epona Equestrian Services, an Arizona-based collective of trainers and counselors that explore the therapeutic potential of equestrian pursuits. Although she does discuss horse training and horse behavior, Kohanov is most interested in what horses can teach us. Moving beyond the realm of horse whispering, Kohanov studies how horses awaken intuition in humans while also mirroring our unspoken feelings and fears. At its core, this book reminds us to be mindful as we approach the horse-human relationship. Like human-to-human relationships, we have to do our own personal and spiritual work before we can expect to create a meaningful and cooperative interspecies connection. Kohanov is a steadfast writer who isn't shy about claiming a strong feminine approach, showing how mythology and history are filled with examples of powerful woman-horse connections. She also has the courage to reveal her paranormal experiences with these intensely emotional and intuitive animals--stories that may sound familiar to anyone who has ever loved and dreamed of horses. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
The Tao of Equus considers the mystical nature of horses and the magical connection between horses and humans. Equine therapist Linda Kohanov tells of an extraordinary spiritual awakening she experienced with her black mare, Rasa. This incident led her to investigate the apparent metaphysical as well as scientific aspects of the human-horse bond. Using neurological research, cultural history, mythology, and firsthand anecdotes from years of teaching and facilitating equine therapy, Kohanov examines the profound communion that people, and women in particular, often experience with horses. Some of the areas Kohanov explores are how the equine mind compares with the human mind, and what horses can teach humanity.

If Horses Could Write..........2007-09-19
If horses could write, what a tale they would tell. Would we want to hear it? If all the horses throughout time massed together, to reach out and draft an author, Linda Kohanov would be their choice, and The Tao of Equus would be their book.
By the second page of the Introduction I was in tears. Only two other books have ever had that effect on me: Les Miserables, and A Tale of Two Cities, and I had to get to the end to have the same reaction. The introduction describes a high-performing dressage horse who cannot find a rider worthy of him, until an animal therapist writes him an ad that draws his perfect rider to him. These kinds of unions have always gotten to me, and I never really understood why. Reading this book has helped. If you can believe the author, that horses have souls and emotions, it's easier to understand.
This is not an easy read. Much of it seems like research designed to mount a defense of a new academic discipline, to lend weight to what might be perceived as a frivolous pursuit. The therapy involved is far from frivolous, and I wonder if the author could have made her case with a few less words, and not quite so many reviews and references.
It's worth slogging through, however, to get to the jewels, the rapturous descriptions of all things equine. The wonderful case studies. The joy the author has in life. Reading this book makes you glad there are such people in this world, and such horses, and that they have taken the time to write. Well done, horse ancestors!
Your horse and you.........2007-09-17
Just a quick note to say this book is so insightfull for anyone who has an open mind and truly wants to understand himself and his horse as well. Many of us can't help but see ourselves in this text somewhere. It will be read often, in part or as a whole. A must read for any serious horse person.
Into the Horse's Mind.......2007-04-12
Learn how your horse thinks in this spiritual guide to horse training. You'll have a greater understanding of horse psychology and thus, a deeper relationship with your horse.
A Magnificent Journey.......2007-04-09
I was astounded and amazed at this really brilliant book which was written by Linda Kohanov. From the description of the book, I just had a feeling that it would be a unique and fascinating one.
My kudos go to the author. I learned so much about horse training and beyond, and had the opportunity to look into my being as I related to her transparent and vulnerable account of her journey. BRAVO! It is a must read for those who work with and love horses.
Interesting Insights on How the Horse's Mind Works.......2007-03-19
This book, packed with excellent scientific references and provides an interesting prospective on how a Horse's Mind works, how it has been designed to work. Depending on personal beliefs, readers may / may be moved by more ethereal references to "ancestoral horse spirits", the concept of "universal history" or stories that seemingly demonstrate special "horse - human" connections.
As a long-time horse lover, and as a horse breeder, I found the more fundamentally-based segments of the book beneficial in a relatively unique way, compared with the plethora of other horse books I've also enjoyed and found useful. In addition to providing insight that has positively influenced daily work of my own horses, information from this book has put forward some fresh ideas in helping them through individual problems / quirks.
While the more philospophical segments of the book did not especially take with me, these offered ideas and concepts that were otherwise unfamiliar, and were therefore interesting, much of the time. I can understand how others who are less practically-driven than myself might find these soulful references touching. The commercial horse breeder who initially shared this book with me (admittedly a fellow female) remarked that it was one of the most influential books she had read in the past decade, in terms of how it rested with her from a personal prospective.
I agree with several other reviewers, that this book should not be regarded as a guide on horse training, or horse training concepts. Nor is it a ready-read for someone not into horses. But I believe that its title adequately depicts what the book sets out put forward: A Woman's Journey of Healing and Transformation Through the Way of the Horse. I enjoyed most it.

Book Description
There are approximately seven million horses in America. Each year, over seventy thousand are abused, abandoned, and fated to slaughter by callous and irresponsible owners. With a heart as big as a pasture, author Melanie Bowles takes some of these horses into her sanctuary called Proud Spirit. Here, horses that arrive listless and broken find a home where they finally know safety.
The bond between horse and caretaker does not happen overnight. It hangs by a fine thread of trust that the author earns with endless patience and a full commitment to the well-being of the horses in her care. The horses, some of which have suffered severe abuse, astound her time and again with their ability to trust, return the love they are given, and enjoy the companionship of other horses.
You will meet a whole stableful of remarkable horses:
Dusty, a Thoroughbred who recovered from severe injuries to reveal a rambunctious personality and a knack for stealing hats;
Maddy, an old mare, and Dancer, a gallant Appaloosa, both of whom had been isolated for years but whose ecstatic first acquaintance at Proud Spirit was, mysteriously, like the reunion of two soul mates;
Annie, a little sorrel mare who will break your heart with her weary kindness and who found peace and compassion, at last, under an old oak tree in a pasture at Proud Spirit;
Wrangler, a Miniature whose premature separation from his dam turned him into a tiny tormentor. His rowdy innocence helped Marshal, a huge Palomino gelding with neurological trauma, become playful and engaged as he educated Wrangler in horsy manners. Horses of Proud Spirit is an homage to the spirit of these alluring creatures and a moving memoir of lessons learned in compassion, strength, and loss.

. . . knowing this story.......2007-09-21
Melanie and her husband, Jim, are to be commended for all their work with these wonderful, great, grand animals - HORSES! Horse lover all my life, but never worked with them although had one in early teens. Worked summer of '06 on horse slaughter bill which I got involved with while doing research on horse book I am writing - story of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner of 1966 - Kauai King. Have been to rescue farms and send money as I have it to help support. From all the reviews of this book, Melanie, besides being a good woman with a tremendous heart, she must be a good writer also. I am going to order this book, but must admit that it may be a while before I read it. I am sure there will be lots of new stuff I will learn about, but the "stuff" that, at this time, I do not want to know more about, is how man has abused the horse - I, all to sadly, KNOW THIS STORY. I thank Melanie for her courage in writing this book, for herein, (and books like hers), lies any and all hope for better treatment of our wonderful horses - the love and respect they deserve, the rescue when this is not given. Again, to Melanie and Jim and all like them, all those special souls out there in this hard world, who when they hear of an abused or neglected horse (or any animal for that matter) will go and get them, bring them "home" in their arms as if these massive creatures were no more than a kitten and give them safe harbor and peace - THANK YOU! Shelby Staples - Virginia
If you think you love horses.......2007-08-11
If you love horses or even think you love horses, read this book. Sue can break your heart and heal it again on just one page. A great book for kids and adults, just starting with horses. Sue takes readers with her as she grows from rank beginner to one who not only loves horses but learns to understands and appreciates their amazing minds, hearts, and spirits.
Great book for animal lovers.......2007-07-05
I thought this book was really good, especially for people who love horses. The stories in each chapter are very interesting and different from each other, so you don't leave off on a chapter wondering what will happen next.
Great book!.......2007-06-27
I am involved with a horse rescue here in Michigan & bought the book after seeing the tv show about Proud Spirit on PBS. I can identify fully with this book - I was an inexperienced horse person & was thrilled to find out that the author was too when she started, and is from Michigan herself! The book is an easy read & will stir up emotional reactions from any animal lover. I have cried while reading this book several times - please keep in mind that I do horse rescue, so I've witnessed some of these things firsthand. The book is so well written in my opinion that you feel like you're there.
A Special Book by a Special Person.......2007-06-09
The Horses of Proud Spirit is really three stories in one. First, it's Melanie Sue Bowles' story as she tells us about her experiences with some of the first horses who came to live at Proud Spirit. We follow Melanie's progress from pure novice to knowledgeable caregiver, and she tells of her experiences just as if we were sitting on a porch, swapping horse stories with friends who are nonjudgmental because at one time or another in the course of our own learning process, we've been in Melanie's shoes. Melanie becomes our friend on the very first page of The Horses of Proud Spirit, and that's because she has the ability to make us feel her horror and disgust at what humans do to horses, whether out of ignorance or pure malice.
In what I consider the second story within the story, Melanie tells us the tale of each horse, unfolding the sequence of events in her comfortable, down-to-earth manner, even when the events are tragic. We rejoice with her when the outcome is good and weep with her when a horse is lost.
The third story is ours, the reader's, because if we've been insulated from the terrible things humans do to horses, Melanie opens our eyes to reality, so perhaps, if faced with signs of abuse, we will be quicker to take action. For those of us having cared for an abused horse (and hopefully, never as many as Mel and her husband, Jim) we share our understanding of what she goes through with each horse.
Depending upon whether you're new to horses or an old-timer, you'll either learn what's right when it comes to being responsible for the care of a horse, or, like what happened with me, Melanie's story brought back warm comforting memories of horses I've known in my lifetime.
You will enjoy The Horses of Proud Spirit and the way in which Melanie tells her story. You will turn the last page and wish she would tell you more. You will also use up one or more boxes of tissues by the time you close the back cover. And, you will never again take your horses for granted.

History paid for.......2007-09-24
History paid for.
The fundamental fact that Peter Matthiessen didn't mention in his detailed account of the American Indian Movement, the so called "Reign of Terror" at Pine Ridge in the early 1970s, the brutal murder of two severely wounded and defenseless federal agents and the trials of Leonard Peltier and his co-conspirators, is that while researching, interviewing and writing ITSOCH, he was under contract to share the profits with Leonard Peltier. That guaranteed him unlimited access. Hardly objective reporting.
Matthiessen did however go through great lengths to provide a tremendous amount of detail even if the bulk of it came from the usual suspects themselves.
In the end though, he was also convinced of Peltier's guilt. He shunned Peltier's only real alibi, that someone else, a Mr. X, whom they all knew and Matthiessen skeptically interviewed. Matthiessen was "Taken aback by this unexpected story." And when it came down to the basic facts of the killing of the two FBI agents he said "If there is another persuasive explanation of the location and position of their cars, I cannot find it."
Matthiessen also reported that one of Peltier's key attorney's, Williams Kunstler believed Peltier was guilty as well: "I know Bill Kunstler (another of the AIM lawyers) thought they killed the agents, but he believes that they were innocent whether they did it or not."
But it must be inordinately embarrassing for Matthiessen, The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, Peltier, and his supporters to know that someone of the stature of Alan M. Dershowitz, the distinguished Harvard law professor, said that Matthiessen "is utterly unconvincing - indeed sophomoric - when he pleads the legal innocence of the individual Indian criminals. The American Indian Movement - like every militant fringe group - contains its share of violent criminals who seek to glorify their predatory acts under the flag of the movement." "...(and) not only fails to convince; he (Matthiessen) inadvertently makes a strong case for Mr. Peltier's guilt. (New York Times, book review March 8, 1983.)
Because it provides much detail, ITSOCH is a good reference for comparing prior statements of the participants in the murders of special Agents Jack Coler and Ron Williams to their later contradictions and subsequent claims, all of which have changed over the years. It does serve as a good foundation and litmus test to further demonstrate Peltier's guilt.
Best History of AIM.......2007-03-26
This is a sweeping history of the American Indian Movement and Indian activism in the 1960s and 1970s. It covers the major events such as the siege of Wounded Knee and the arrest of Leonard Peltier. It examines in detail the Oglala Sioux reservation at Pine Ridge and its chairman Dick Wilson and his battle with AIM and Russel Means. Other AIM leaders such as Dennis Banks are examined as are the various trials sourounding AIM activism. Those are the books strengths, its weakness is that it does not give a good overview of the state of Native Americans in the U.S in thsoe two decades, concentrating instead on the places where activism took place and where shots were fired. However their were another hundred reservations where such things did not take place, including large reservations such as the Navajos and it would have be nice to learn more about politics and economies in these places.
Remarkable read........2007-03-24
This is an distubing yet fascinating book. Matthiessen has such a gifted way of putting the reader into the reality of the situation. Not a book for a reader who believes that the government is all good and correct, or maybe it is. Justice for 'face saving' and 'revenge'.
Terrible events and wonderful writing!
An infuriating portrait of injustice.......2006-09-19
I'm often deeply suspicious of writing as political as one finds in this book - I greatly admire Matthiessen's writings on travel, nature and Buddhism, but found his novel "At Play In The Fields Of The Lord" a bit ham-fisted in its' approach, even when I agreed with it's sentiments.
But after a few reads, several years apart, IN THE SPIRIT OF CRAZY HORSE stands as a great, damning document - it's a piece of work that is impressive and massive, and will leave you infuriated.
The entire work is built around the trial and conviction of Leonard Peltier, and rather than simply recount the events or press an agenda, Matthiessen goes to meticulous lengths to contextualize and cover every side of the background. The history of the Sioux Lakota is covered extensively, as are the social conditions (health, income, education, and the infamous violence) on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The AIM (American Indian Movement) emerges on Pine Ridge, and it should be noted that the reservation is officially two counties - Shannon and Jackson, which were administered from elsewhere in the state, and run by Bureau of Indian Affairs appointees, instead of by an elected government (the case in most US counties). These appointees' extreme and unorthodox tactics in administering the reservation dovetailed nicely with FBI surveillance and subversion of suspected subversive groups, including AIM, and the paranoia generated set the stage for the firefight and subsequent trial.
Matthiessen expends considerable effort in the attempt at giving both sides a space to speak, not extremely successfully from an objectivity standpoint, but well enough for the purposes of this book: Matthiessen also unearths and publishes a vast array of court transcripts and legal documents; a certain point of view does begin to emerge, and Matthiessen admits where his sympathies lie, but generally, this is a book in which the FBI and various individuals within the government of South Dakota hang themselves with their own words. And they do this consistently, over hundreds of pages, and when afforded many opportunities by Matthiessen to justify or clarify themselves, they fail to do so repeatedly.
Such Machiavellian governmental machinations were an unfortunate part of the political landscape during the Nixon era (this has not necessarily changed with the passage of time); this is one of the most devastating documents of that ruthlessness (see William Shawcross' SIDESHOW for a second, scary glimpse at this political tendency), and Matthiessen - through meticulous investigation and research - goes out of his way to be fair. Give this dense and - at times - difficult book some patience; the history lessons and legalese do have both a point and a payoff - this is a far more infuriating document of injustice than any simple agenda-based hatchet job could ever be.
-David Alston
What a great book!.......2006-09-09
Having assumed that I had read countless volumes of Native American history, here I find another compelling book that brings anger and frustration. All I can say is that I am on a mission to learn more and more about Mr. Peltier. Many books that I have read before this one did not shed the kind of light on him that was deserved. I have to admit that other AIM followers had different views of him and it only makes me courious, and again I'll find another story. But that is the greatest thing about our American History, it has never been written with the truth at the heart of the writers pen. I can only hope that one day Mr. Peltier will be free, and whatever occurred during that day of confusion will be the truth, but by then it will only be another 100 years of history gone wrong. We will probably never know the truth.

Book Description
Wyatt Webb blends horse sense with common sense in a revolutionary new form of therapy.
If you want to deal with your demons, it helps to make a pit stop in Tucson, Arizona.
His tools are not a leather couch and a standard therapist's stopwatch that informs you when "time is up." Time has been up for some of his clients for a long, long time. They are long overdue when it comes to changing their lives. And they want some help.
With Webb's therapy, how you relate to the horse will tell what you've learned over the course of your lifetime and about how you relate to all living things. Wyatt tells his audience, "Remember one thing. It's not about the horse. It's about YOU." With his help you will learn a few ground skills that will keep you safe in any barn in the world. But your main goal is to look at what you've learned over the course of your lifetime and whether it works for you or against you in your relationships.
Wyatt states, "The horse is the same for every person who chooses to be with them. The horse will serve as a mirror to your energy system." (What you think, what you feel and every move your body does or does not make). "It's the person dealing with the horse who tells the whole story," he insists.

One of the worst books I've ever read - TRITE & CORNY.......2006-04-24
Just skip this one and spend your time and money in something worthwhile... seriously! Me, I'm just going to start writting my own best selling "self"-help book and then I'll ask family, friends, colleagues and clients to review it with 5 stars! LOL
Sincere, well-written and helpful.......2006-04-21
This well-written book is entertaining, earnest and sincere. It is also helpful. No, you won't find the secret of life here, but you will learn ways to get through your life as happily as possible. Webb is blunt but honest and has the credentials to back up what he is saying. I highly recommend this book.

This is a powerful book that explores the healing benefits of animals combined with the inner knowing of a wise guide. Wyatt Webb is just that - he weaves together the story and experience with purpose, meaning and healing intent. A good read. As a psychotherapist working with at-risk children and incorporating animal assisted interventions - this is a true depiction of the work. Kate Nicoll, MSW, author Soul Friends

Product Description
In the depth of every human being, there is a profound need for answers to the fundamental questions of existence. Is there a God? What is Truth? What is Reality? 'The Knee of Listening' has transformed the lives of thousands of secular and religious seekers since it was first published in 1972, because it answers all of these questions.
This autobiography shows, with incomparable wisdom and clarity, a life moved by the Divine, and a being of such unheard-of greatness that many readers are left amazed and touched by this book.
Adi Da s spiritual autobiography tells the miraculous story of his unique Incarnation and Revelation in the West for the sake of liberating all beings. To read it is to find the very Heart of Reality--tangibly felt in your own heart as the deepest truth of Existence. It is the great mystery that you are invited to discover.
This newly expanded edition includes an expanded description of Adi Da's early-life, leading up to his Divine Re-Awakening in 1970 and the secrets of his birth in 1939. It also has new revelations about the spiritual work of the great Realizers in his lineage, and Adi Da's unique demonstration of the Seventh Stage of Life. The profound events of "Yogic death" (in 1986, 1999, and 2000) that occurred after his Divine Re-Awakening--events that completed his process of Incarnating the Divine Conscious Light are new as well to this new edition.
From Amazon readers of a previous edition:
"... a kick a** book - that really gets to the core of what life, suffering and God Realization is all about.
"... an amazing story of the an actual and real spiritual awakening and transformation..."
Adapted from the introduction:
From time to time, there is a book that challenges, and eventually changes, the entire perspective of a civilization. 'The Knee Of Listening' is such an epoch-making book. Appearing at the beginning of the third millennium of the common era, it carries a Revelation that has the potenti

A profound spiritual autobiography.......2005-04-29
The Knee of Listening by Adi Da Dawn Horse Press 621p (1995)
This is one of many editions of the spiritual autobiography of the unique American mystic
Adi Da. The first edition was 1972 and new editions with more material and much advertising about the group continue to appear. I also got the latest one(2004) which was about 3 times the size and weight but the hundreds of pages of new material was more of the opaque prose and advertising. So, I recommend one of the earlier paperpack editions like this one.
The sticker on the cover says `The most profound spiritual autobiography of all time` and this might well be true. I am in my 60's and have read thousands of books and this if one of the great ones. Certainly it is by far the fullest and clearest account of enlightenment I have ever seen. Even if you have no interest at all in the most fascinating of all human psychological processes, it is an amazing document that reveals a great deal about religion, yoga, and human psychology and probes the depths and limits of human possibilities.
As I have read and experienced alot in various religious traditions, I naturally compare his writings with those of others, particularly with the great Indian mystic Osho. Though they clearly agree on the major points of how to prodceed on the path, letting go of the attachment to the spiritual quest etc. their styles are vastly different. Both are highly intelligent and well read(Osho could speed read and read over 100,000 books) and were at home in the spiritual literature of the major religious traditions. However, most of Da's books are essentially unreadable as he struggles to express in language the ineffable realms of the enlightened mind. Even in this, by far his most readable book, he often veers off into pages of opacity as he tries to explain the unexplainable. Osho by contrast is the clearest, most jargon free expositor of the spiritual life who has ever lived. He wrote very little and nearly all of his more than 200 books are transcriptions of spontaneous talks he gave-- with no notes or preparation. They are nonetheless unexcelled masterpieces of spiritual literature. His amazing àutobiography`(actually compiled after his death) has been published by St. Martins by the full version is available online at www.oshoworld.com and other places. Unfortunately, he has very little to say about the exact details of his spiritual progress.
Most of Osho's talks were videotaped and are available on tape and DVD. As Da lives most of the time in seclusion on an island in Fiji it is not easy to get to hear him but the Dawn Horse Press sells a few videotapes on their web page. Da is not a very engaging or facile speaker, unlike Osho who is by turns amusing, shattering and hypnotic. But, as both of them understand, it's what the master is and not he says that is important.
Both of them were utterly honest and uncompromising in their life and teachings and Da omits nothing of relevance, including his youthful adventures with sex and drugs as well as his exposure to LSD, psilocybin and mescaline as a volunteer in government experiments. However, as with many or perhaps all of those destined to become enlightened, he was different from birth and experienced the Shakti energy (which he calls the Bright) from childhood. And, when he entered college, he said his primary interest was to discover what living beings are and what is living consciousness. Clearly not your typical freshman.
A major problem in describing advanced spiritual states is that no criteria or language for them exists in common discourse so mystics have to try to bend language in mostly vain attempts to capture their experiences. It is far worse than trying to describe seeing to a congenitally blind person since they at least have the cognitive structures and experience of the world. But mystics are quite rare and most of them have left little or no description of their mental states.
Unlike Osho, who rejected miracles, paranormal phenomena and all the other nonsense that commonly accompanies religion, Da seems to lack any science background at all and embraces precognition(p120), reincarnation(p555),`meditating` other persons, living on air(p287) etc., and regards the phenomena that I would say are happening in his brain as being `out there`. From comments included in newer editions it is clear that many of his disciples believe he can perform miracles like stopping a raging forest fire at their California retreat. Nevertheless, most of the time he is amazingly levelheaded, going thru over a decade of stress and psychic terrors that would drive most from the spiritual path. Millions of years of evolution have solidified the ego and it does not leave peacefully.
Interwoven with the spellbinding account of his spiritual progress are the details of the minds interaction with the body described in the East in terms of various forms of Yoga(eg., p95-9, 214-21, 249,281-3, 439-40). These few pages are worth more than a whole shelf of yoga books if you want to get to the heart of the mind/body relation in spirituality.
Unlike most who have become enlightened, he had a thorough grounding in Christian practice and made a major effort to become a protestant and then Greek Orthodox minister. Even years later, after he was far along the path with Muktananda, he had an amazing and totally unexpected series of visitations from Mary and Jesus that went on for weeks(p 301-3 et seq.).
Regarding drugs, as is nearly universal among spiritual teachers, he notes that although they may remove certain barriers at times, they do not provide a shortcut to understanding. However, nearly everyone is now aware that they put many on the path to higher consciousness.
He describes in detail the many stages in his ego death or self realization(eg, p72-4, 198-200, 219,20, 238-9, 245, 249, 258-9, 281, 355-65, 368-72, 406). Along the way, he realized the ultimate disutility of all practices and all traditions(337-9) including yoga(281-3) which are all attached to seeking and goals, ultimately winding up in the present. He discovered, as have many others, that seeking and meditation became obstacles and gave them up for devotion to his guru Muktananda(p420-22). His detailed accounts of his interactions with the famous Swami Muktananda and his ultimate realization of his limitations are of rare insight and honesty.
He constantly encounters his attachment to his ego(Narcissus-- eg, p108-110) and asks himself--`Avoiding Relationship?` by which he seems to mean avoiding the divine or ego death with spiritual seeking.
After enlightenment he teaches the 'only by me revealed and given Way of the heart`, finding all other paths to be `remedial` and 'egoic' and merely pursuing God or reality(p359 +) but after a careful reading of this and several other books I never got any idea what that way consists in. Undoubtedly being in his presence helps alot but in other places he has complained about the fact that his disciples just won't let it happen and one wonders if even one has been able to follow him. Of course the same considerations apply to all traditions and teachers and though some of Osho's friends(he disavowed the master/disciple relationship) have claimed enlightenment, nobody of his status has emerged. It looks like you have to have the right genes and the right environment and a very advanced and preferably enlightened guru to stimulate you. The world desperately needs higher consciousness and I hope that someone comes up with an easier way very soon.
Eye-and-Heart Opening.......2005-02-10
Adi Da Samraj reveals his life and work in the pages of this autobiography, and as that revelation unfolds, a simple fact emerges: he has gone through an extraordinary ordeal to give us all a way to be happy, even right now. It is a fascinating and moving account of how that way came to be, full of both the ordinary trappings of human existence and incredible spiritual awakenings. This book opened my eyes and heart to a rare being. Definitely worth the read.
The most illuminating autobiography you will ever read!.......2005-01-18
This is the most illuminating autobiography you will ever read! It will change your whole idea of life. When I read Adi Da's words, I can feel amazing clarity and bliss pervading my mind and heart. Troubles, seeking, and problems seem to instantly disappear.
I have always loved the prologue to the Knee of Listening, which speaks about the real possibility of freedom from fear of death:
"Death is utterly acceptable to consciousness and life. There has been endless time of numberless deaths, but neither consciousness nor life has ceased to arise. The felt quality and cycle to death has not modified the fragility of flowers, even the flowers within the human body. Therefore, one's understanding of consciousness and life must be turned to That Utter, Inclusive Truth, That Clarity and Wisdom, That Power and Untouchable Gracefulness, That One and only Reality, this evidence suggests. One must cease to live in a superficial and divided way, seeking and demanding consciousness and life in the present apparent form, avoiding and resisting what appears to be the end of consciousness and life in death.
The Heart Is Real understanding. The Heart Is Real Consciousness and Real Life. The Heart Is What Merely and Only Is, but Which Is also Appearing In and Behind the conditions of mortal life and its death. Therefore, it is said of old, the One That Is Is neither born nor come to death, not Alive merely as the limitation of form (itself), not Itself (or Entirely) Rendered in what appears, and, yet, It Is the Living One, than Which there Is no lesser other (and no Great or Greater Other), Appearing As all of this Play of changes, but Eternally One, Unchanging, and Free.
There is Only the Constant Knowledge and Enjoyment of the Heart, moment to moment, through the instant of all conditions of appearance and disappearance. Of This I Am Perfectly Certain. I Am That."
Profound beyond Limit.......2004-07-31
I have just started reading this newly updated book, having read an older version several years ago, and I am even more speechless reading this book - with the profundity, the sacrifice, and the recognition of the One Who speaks through The Knee of Listening. This is spiritually historical, but also very human.
I am newly impressed on each page and each chapter, with the depth of Adi Da's Realization, and with the sacrifice Adi Da has made and continues to make for the sake of returning to the "Bright" not just himself, but as his gift for all humanity, for our liberation and Happiness. The relentless willingness he has to go beyond all limits blows me away! Also, the relationship he had to his teachers is very instructive, especially talking about Nityananda and Vivekenanda. I think this book is a must read for anyone interested in God, Truth, Religion, or anyone on their own spirutual path.

Book Description
The power, grace, and freedom of horses had always resonated deeply with Stromberg. Through his photographs of these magnificent beasts, he sees a way to bridge what he calls “modern life’s disturbing separation between people and nature.” The result is Spirit Horses, showcasing 140 of Stromberg’s extraordinary color portraits of these animals, along with quotations from leading teachers and writers exploring equine wisdom and its intersection with spirituality. The photographs in Spirit Horses were shot in a variety of locales, from wildlife sanctuaries to private ranches to natural habitats in Europe and the western United States. These images — and the accompanying quotes — offer a portrait of horses as profound teachers, giving strength and stability to a world out of balance.

Repetitive photographs and sparse text.

Customer Reviews:
Deep, but full of arrogance.......2007-03-09
Adi Da is definately a deep spiritual teacher. I love to learn from. This book has a lot of meaning of being, even just holding the book. Reading it is quite the opposite. The arrogance says a lot. When a teacher of this caliber makes it all about him with no humility, I pass.
I would suggest some of his DVD or The knee of listening instesd.
Overwhelming.......2005-12-28
Never have I found a book that speaks to my heart with such truth. This book is for a true spirtual seeker. One who truly knows what the spiritual search is about would realize that this mans actions are completely revelant with his teachings. And for that it takes a true holy understanding. If your looking for one of the most profound spiritual genius this world has ever had to offer, your search is over.
