Unrealistic.......2007-09-29
I ordered this book because, having graduated college and tired of Ramen, I needed to know how to cut, mix and heat real food. The produce and ingredient recommendations are not for the novice cooker. It's easier to eat fat food than to eat healthy, so unless you're serious about making a change in the way you shop, frequency in shopping, and flavors you're accustomed to, get your recipes from your mom and the internet.
BBB - Boring, Basic & for Beginners.......2007-08-23
Considering that the title itself implies the simplicity of the recipes, I feel a little bad about complaining about the quality of this book, but hey, I will anyway.
If you are a beginning cook and have never made tuna salad and/or have thought to add something other than mayonnaise to it, if you have never made a meatloaf (low fat?) or boiled a noodle, then this would be a good book for you, otherwise, the boringness of the majority of the recipes will make for a very dusty book on your shelf.
The sample recipes featured on the Amazon "Look Inside" function seemed interesting but have turned out to be the rare exception that stand out from the dull, simplistic everyday recipes that any good cook could throw together without thinking.
The crappiness and lack of inspiration in this book would make even Rachel Ray laugh out loud.
one of the best "cooking for 1" cook books out there.......2007-08-05
as a single person who hates leftovers and freezer burn, I am always looking for recipes that will make just enough for dinner. I have bought 6 or 7 cookbooks that serve 1. this cookbook is one that I actually use. It has a variety of recipes and is easy to follow. These are recipes that you can make after a stressful day at work and know that you will have good food with a minimal about of fuss.
The book that got me to write a review!.......2007-07-02
I've never reviewed anything before, but after finishing my delicious Orange-Glazed Pork Chops & Sweet Potatoes, I couldn't resist anymore. These recipes are healthy, delicious, and easy to make. The small portions mean that I can try something, enjoy it, and not have leftovers going bad. I haven't run into a bad recipe yet. Check it out!
Great for anyone!.......2007-05-02
As a senior in college, I wanted to learn more about cooking but usually fell back on eating meals that were frozen or standard because any other cookbooks were geared towards 4+ diners, and I don't have the fridge space to save tons of leftovers. Additionally, my fiance and I have been interested in eating healthier for some time, but we were both novice cooks who felt uncomfortable in the kitchen. I received this cookbook for Christmas from my mother and have been continually grateful since!
Though there are no pictures (I like visuals!), I can easily follow her recipes. There are some that look a little ambitious, and I plan to work up to that when I feel more comfortable with my kitchen; in the meantime, there are more than enough quick, easy meals that I can feel GOOD eating (hey, "healthy" is in the title!). For someone like me who loves to try new tastes, she includes a wonderful variety of dishes from good-old Southern home cooking to chic European eating.
She also includes the nutritional values for every serving, which I think is an excellent feature. As many reviewers have mentioned, she divides the recipe into columns, so you can decide to cook for 1, 2, or 4. I thought, "This is cooking healthy, the portion sizes will probably be tiny." Quite the contrary! I like to eat (as does my guy), yet we ALWAYS have leftovers when we make a recipe for 2. This book will be the staple cookbook in my kitchen!

Okay, Ken Wilber fans, you've waited long enough. The intensely private potentate of the integral path has broken his silence and published a year's worth of journal notes. Pull up a chair. You've entered the living room of one of the most intriguing spiritual theorists on the planet. He'll tell you a little about his work schedule, friendships with publishers, artists, and intellectuals, and you'll talk late into the night about bringing together the best parts of all the world's wisdom traditions. Hold on tight, though, because the conversational pace can be dizzying, bouncing from Nagarjuna to Plotinus, Derrida to Nagel, feminism to Zen, psychotherapy to vipassana. And this isn't just superficial soul-babble. Give it a while to sink in. Take a sip of wine. Move on to more expansive talk of higher states of being. Wilber will describe his own meditative experiences and how they relate to his revision of the Great Chain of Being. As daylight breaks, you'll gaze into the early twilight, wondering how you failed to notice all those hidden dimensions within and beyond an otherwise two-dimensional world. --Brian Bruya
Book Description
As one who has written extensively about the interior life, meditation, and psychotherapy, Ken Wilber - the leading theorist in the field of integral psychology - naturally arouses the curiosity of his numerous readers. In response to this curiosity, this one-year diary not only offers an unprecedented entrée into his private world, but offers an introduction to his essential thought. "If there is a theme to this journal," Wilber writes, "it is that body, mind, and the luminosities of the soul - all are perfect expressions of the Radiant Spirit that alone inhabits the universe, sublime gestures of that Great Perfection that alone outshines the world."
Wilber's personal writings include:
details of his own spiritual practice advice to spiritual seekers reflections on his work and that of other prominent theorists in the field of integral psychology his day-to-day personal experiences dozens of his short theoretical essays on topics from art to feminism to spirituality to psychotherapy
Customer Reviews:
An interesting look at Wilber's internal life............2007-05-12
I have read almost everything Ken Wilber has written and I am a fan of his writing. Whatever his personal faults may be, I don't think it takes away from the validity of his intellectual contributions. My understanding is that Wilber is the only LIVING author to be approached by Random House to compile his collected works. He also has over 20 books in continuous print, some over 20 years. This is very unusual for a primarily academic and philosphical writer, I'll leave it up to you about what this means or doesn't mean in terms of his significance as a major thinker.
A disadvantage of One Taste in a sense is that it is written from Wilber's own perspective. I think it would have been a value-add to include lots of material from people close to him. This would provide a more complete and objective picture of the man. However, the book Ken Wilber: Thought As Passion (Suny Series in Transpersonal and Humanistic Pyschology) is fairly close to something like a critical analysis and breaks Wilber's work into periods. I think this gives an excellent feel for Wilber as a person along with Grace and Grit: Spirituality and Healing in the Life and Death of Treya Killam Wilber.
While I am a fan of Wilber, I also recognize he could be arrogant, short, etc. On the other hand, he voluntarily reversed his previous position after writing The Spectrum of Consciousness (Quest Books) despite the book's success and after knowing Treya his wife who died of cancer for only a short period, married her and took care of her until her death. During this period, he did not publish and I think that if people are going to look at the negative, they should also consider the positive especially given someone as complex as Wilber. This seems only fair, especially given the degree of scrutiny a public figure must face on every aspect of their life.
My understanding of Ken Wilber's model is that there are different lines of development. As such, according to Ken's own model he could be EXTREMELY HIGH on cognitive and low in other areas of development. I don't think this takes away anything from his model, which lots of people have had input into. I think both the man and the model should be judged on their respective merits.
With respect to Ken Wilber suggesting people need a teacher, this seems to be a belief he has and which is shared by many traditions such as Sufism, Tibetan Buddhism and Zen all of which influenced Wilber's thought. As I said above, I don't get that Ken is positioning himself to be the leader of a cult. In fact, I think he makes it abundantly clear that the self is the navigator of the waves of development and that ultimately his model will be replaced by a more inclusive model. He himself has revised his own model during 5 different phases of his work and while he is often critical of others, I have seen him criticize his own earlier thought with similar vehemence in his own writings.
What ONE TASTE is suppossed to achieve as I understand it is to give a peek into Ken Wilber's interior life. In this regard, I think it succeeds. While he may have his faults, I personally believe that he has had all kinds of mystical experiences. Whether these are established as permanent traits vs. temporary states, is a question the reader will have to answer for themselves. Again... his own model explains that anyone at any stage can have a high-level mystical experience that is interpreted from whatever developmental level that THEY ARE AT. I imagine this is true for Ken as well.
Similar to other reviews, I don't think this is a good place to get an introduction to Wilber although I do think this is a very accessible work. I wouldn't say it is the best second or third book either, for this I would recommend Visser's book which I referenced above which provides a bird's eye view of Ken's entire body of work and key ideas. Grace and Grit also mentioned above, is probably a better personal look at Ken's life and perhaps No Boundary: Eastern and Western Approaches to Personal Growth would give a better indication of a more personal style a more palatable sense of the authenticity of Ken's depth.
Hands down, I think the best overall introduction to Ken Wilber is the 10 CD audio interview Kosmic Consciousness. This presents all the key ideas of Wilber's thought and gives one a sense of his personality. Similar to email, the written word misses a lot. Some studies indicate that in any personal communication only 7% is in the words. The remainder is body language and facial expression (55%) and tone of voice and inflection (38%). This study has been repeated by many people and should be easy to find in the communication and linguistic literature.
I don't think Ken Wilber needs me to defend him, however, I would suggest that any open-minded person at least read Visser's book, listen to Kosmic Consciousness and read A Brief History of Everything along with Grace and Grit before jumping to any conclusions. I was initially turned off by Ken Wilber's manner, style, etc. until I learned a LOT more about him. He is not a simple man and I wouldn't judge his work solely on how he comes across in this book, which at times is admittedly arrogant or self-absorbed.
I offer this review as my opinion and a complementary contribution to what other reviewers have written on both sides of the "Wilber Fence." I don't claim to be an expert at Wilber, but I am an expert on my own opinion which I offer in a spirit of creating a balanced assessment of Ken's work. I would hate to see anyone miss the value in it based on a hasty conclusion based on a superficial or incomplete inquiry. For others who know Wilber and dislike him, I hope you continue to critique him and his work. I believe this will result in even better models emerging in the future.
The book to read if you're into integral or Wilber and want a peak inside his head.......2006-12-21
I used to be a lot more interested in the integral movement than I am these days... IMHO it has become too cultish and too focused around Wilber, although, to be fair there are few people on an intellectual basis (and probably even developmental basis) that he has in his direct circle that come anywhere near close to being at where he's at... which is why integral comes from him... and if you want some insight into Wilber, this really is the book to get a peak inside his head. For that reason alone, I really enjoyed the book.
Written in a journal style over the course of 1997 there are entries that range from a few lines to a few pages. Yes, there's lots of name droping and intellectual eletism, however, I found it interesting and valuable to get some insight into Wilber as a person, and not just his theories (even though they're basically integrated into almost every page of the book). There's comments on Treya and Grace and Grit which he'd just finished, his lifestyle (including his meditation practice, influences in his other practices etc), what he does on a daily basis, some of the people he has met, and experiences and perceptions, and of course, some detailed discussion of his theories, psychology, society... I enjoyed it and was not looking for a detailed discussion of his theories, just more insight into who he was as a person. There was of course, the odd interesting insight, such as how many books he reads (buckets loads!).
Best wishes to you on your integral journey!
Lucid, charming, profound and valuable.......2006-02-19
I loved this book.
Not only does it offer an intimate portrait of a very serious mystic philosopher living in the 21st century world, but some of Wilber's random spiritual and philosophical musings are perhaps some of the most valuable he's written.
The descriptions of "constant consciousness" alone are more than well worth the price of the book for both the quite unheard of information as well as the profound inspiration. (Constant consciousness is a phenomenon which eventually befalls long time mediators -and can occasionally happen in "peak" experience -where consciousness remains constant not only throughout the waking state but into the dream state -which we all know as "lucid dreaming" -but also into the deep dreamless sleep state. I myself have experienced such also, so yes, it is profoundly possible . . .)
Also noteworthy and highly useful is a complete breakdown of the different types of evolving spiritual realization, even into "post-enlightenment" phases. That too should be a highly useful and profoundly inspiring discourse, offering a clear, succinct and very practical run-down of the many higher and higher waves that, this moment, await us in greater human potential.
Most definitely worth a look.
Imagine if the Buddha drank beer and kept a diary..........2005-02-23
Favorite quote: "Narcissists are simply people whose egos are not yet big enough to embrace the entire Kosmos, and so they try to be central to the Kosmos instead."
Recently, I heard from an old friend that he'd been having some amazing experiences studying and working with this great guy named Ken Wilber. When I admitted I'd always found myself psyched out by the intellectual depth of his work, he suggested it was worth another try and off I trudged to my local Borders. Each time I went (and it was almost daily for a month), I would pick up a stack of Ken's books, sip my cappuccino, and get really, really angry.
It was only when I read through this intelligent, challenging, and at times laugh out loud funny diary style book that I realized why. Ken Wilber is smarter than me, a better writer, more disciplined, more enlightened, and from all accounts, more fun at a party than I am. But our quests have been similar - to find and share unifying themes in eclectic disciplines in such a way that the world becomes whole.
I am working my way through his entire oeuvre now, but suspect I will always hold a soft spot in my heart for this one - the inspired and inspirational diary of a year in the life of a beer drinking Buddha.
Bland & uninteresting...stick to his prior books.......2004-08-01
Today I read One Taste by Ken Wilbur. Well, I read through it - couldn't finish it. Quite frankly I didn't understand what all the buzz was about. Nothing revolutionary. In fact, disappointing.
I really enjoyed some of his earlier publications, and continue to be inspired by the Holonomy book he edited: The Holographic Paradigm and Other Paradoxes. I definately recommend it, or better yet, Reenchantment of the World by Morris Berman.
But One Taste is supposed to give us a small taste of his inner thoughts via his private daily journal. Al Gore and Bill Clinton were both seen carrying it around, I guess to give us the impression that they are philosphically and spiritually contemplative. Reviewers called it: profound, dizzying, epiphanic, multi-dimensional, "expansive talk of higher states of being"...and I don't get it.
Most of the questions he was asking were things we studied in Philophy 101 and 201, and dare I say, it bored me then as much as it bores me now. Things like, whether or not there is one primal force behind all religions (an Eliadean quest); how religion can be proved "objectively"; uniting psychology and other disciplines with spirituality (without substantial elaboration); if the New Age movement and postmodernism are just fads (a term which he didn't bother to define); how dualism is bad (again, without substantial elaboration); whether truth is subjective or objective, etc.
Not to mention, downright boring in parts - I don't really care what TV shows he watches, his shopping habits, etc. And at parts, self-absorbed. Lots of name dropping. Lots. And lots. Name dropping on almost every page. It's hard to criticize a person's private thoughts, but it kinda sounds like a yuppie boomer with some middle-age crisis questions. It's amazing what some people consider profound.
Want radical? Progressive? Compelling? Why not question the notion of middle class, the addiction called money, the concept of "career", the US economic system as myth...and check out The Way We Never Were, by Stephanie Coontz. I just started it, and love it's challenges to our concept of reality, the myths that we are conditioned to accept as "objective history", and the way most of us organize our lives.
Here Wilber mostly stays in the philosophical /theoretical realm, which is ironic, given that his contributions in Holonomy discuss the disembodied self, and that he considers himself an activist of sorts. But I don't see Wilber doing anything practical with this thought - it comes off as reflections mixed in with some marketing appeal to the so-called intellectual and class elites.
Stick to his prior books.

helpful hints for una soltera!.......2007-06-13
This book is nice for those just starting out on their own or just learning how to cook.
I appreciate the recipes' simplicity and that the book is divided not only according to the different meals but according to different types of meat.
I have made several recipes from this book and think it's very easy to follow and would recommend it to others.
I love this cookbook!.......2006-04-04
I was happy to see the recipies broken down into real portions for one or two people. There are no leftovers and they have taken the guesswork out of measuring and figuring out those fractions when trying to 'shrink' a recipe.
One of THE Best Cookbooks!.......2005-09-13
All of the Taste of Home cookbooks are great! Lots of color pictures, nothing out of the ordenary that you can't find. I love this book with the small sizes. Great meals without a hugh amount of food left over.

Fans of David Rosengarten will be thrilled with the publication of Taste, not so much a companion volume to his popular Food Network show as a distillation of all the man holds dear. It is a remarkable, lush effort, beautifully illustrated with rich color pictures of exotic and home-grown foods. How many food-addled souls out there take the time, like Rosengarten, to sit down and catalog all of the personal favorite dishes from around the world, and then explain why the dish is so delicious, and exactly what makes it special? And oh, by the way, here's how to cook it!
Rosengarten begins his culinary adventure with a chapter entitled "My Favorite Light Appetizers." Here is bruschetta, remarkable Chinese appetizers, gazpacho, Thai salads, and oysters and caviar. In this and every chapter is everything you need to know in order to buy and prepare these foods; ideas on how to serve them; order them in a restaurant; judge them for quality and seasonality; and the right wines to accompany each dish. Other "My Favorite" chapters include in-between dishes (French onion soup; quiche), main courses (Szechwan Shrimp with Chili and Garlic Sauce; moussaka), and desserts (Tarte Tatin; chocolate-chip cookies). A wealth of cooking instruction is here to make your life easier too. Take Gumbo--Rosengarten details three ways in which to thicken the texture, by traditional roux, by okra, and by filé powder. Next comes a delightful recipe for Shrimp and Andouille Gumbo, and a list of recommended beers.
David Rosengarten brings remarkably good tastes into the home kitchen--anyone studying this book will be able to hold court with the best of them, Martha Stewart included. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
Do you want to make spice-rubbed ribs the way they're made by the best barbecue cooks in Memphis? Crispy soft-shell crabs that taste like they're right out of Chesapeake Bay? Refreshing Thai salad just as it's made in Bangkok? A moussaka that could be the star of a great taverna in Greece? A bisteeya that will transport you to Morocco? Catalan lobster soup, Vietnamese summer rolls, proper Dover sole, a real tiramisù? A golden, buttery tarte Tatin?
David Rosengarten will show you how.
The New York Times has said that David Rosengarten's hit show, Taste, on Food Network "reconceived the idea of what a cooking show could be. . . . He explores his subjects so thor-oughly and thoughtfully that he makes instant experts of his viewers." Now Rosengarten has reconceived the idea of what a cookbook can be. Taste gives you a chance to experiment with some of the world's greatest dishes with the world's best cooking teacher at your side.
Each recipe is accompanied by a set of criteria--letting you know exactly what experts mean when they say a risotto is good, a gazpacho is excellent, or a chocolate chip cookie is perfect. Now you'll know how to make it--and what to look for along the way. Rosengarten tells you exactly what to shop for: the bottled hot sauce from the West Indies that makes the best ceviche, the brand of chocolate that produces the deepest-tasting molten chocolate cake. He's similarly candid about equipment, detailing everything from a handy smoker that's indispensable in the preparation of jerk chicken to the best heat source for a homemade crème brulee.
The chapter on wine is itself an education. You'll find everything you need to know to match wine with food--including a list of twelve inexpensive wines that will never let you down. With his characteristic candor, Rosengarten pricks the bubble of wine pretension--exploding many of America's most fervently held myths.
David Rosengarten is a great teacher, with an irrepressible enthusiasm that comes through as vividly in this book as it does on the screen. Beginners will learn the basics from this book. For those who know their way around the kitchen, Rosengarten's in-depth culinary information will be a revelation. A cookbook teaches you how to cook. Taste teaches you how to taste. You'll never want to cook again without it.

Not wide, but wonderfully deep.......2006-01-14
David Rosengarten's FoodTV show, Taste, beautifully illustrated how good the food network *used* to be. Instead of trying to cover several dishes during his half hour allotment, Rosengarten focused on one item in particular -- and then told you everything about it. He showed what could go wrong with, say, a reuben sandwich or creme brulee, and then demonstrated how to do it right. You knew what his standards were and how to achieve them. Oh -- and he did it all with humor.
I think his book, Taste, came out at about the same time. It has the same premise: individual dishes in great depth, rather than a whole cuisine or a collection of random beef (or whatever) recipes. So you get five or more pages about paella or BBQ ribs or the "ordinary" fruit salad. The result is that you learn EVERYTHING about that one subject: his criteria for quality, the variation in methods (for example, Rosengarten compares the difference in gumbo when the dish is thickened with roux, okra, and filé powder), and sometimes its history.
It's always informative, and I have NEVER had a recipe failure. It isn't always the simplest choice, but he explains why you should bother with the extra effort. (His explanation of charcoute garnie causes me to pick a Parisian restaurant that specialized in it, so I could understand exactly why he made such a big deal about it. I'm spoiled for life, now, because I can't find the right kind of saurkraut to make it myself.)
The result is that I don't flip through Taste when I'm looking for an "I'm in the mood for Italian" dinner. It does mean that, when we're thinking about making crab cakes, we're guaranteed to say, "Does Rosengarten have a recipe? Let's see what he does."
Yummy recipes and lots of info!.......2001-06-26
I have absolutely loved everything I have tried from this cookbook. It is also fun and enjoyable to read. The reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is that many of the recipes are quite complex. Once I started experimenting, I discovered that it is often possible to simplify the recipes without losing anything. For example, the stir-fried shrimp recipe calls for deep-frying the shrimp first, which is a hassle. I had wonderful results just stir-frying them. To give him credit, Rosengarten carefully explains the reasons for each unusual step. While I chose not to follow his instructions precisely, I did learn a good deal from reading his explanations. This is a great book for anyone who is confident in the kitchen. It can also be very educational for someone just learning to cook, but beginners may find the recipes dauntingly complex.
One of the best.......2001-02-07
Unlike the reviewer who found this book impractical, I have found this to be the best books on food that I have read. There is a chpater on wine which explains simply and clearly how to identify good food-wine pairings: excellent advice that was helped me on more than one occasion. Additionally, he explains enough about several wines from around the world that you can go and choose a bottle in confidence that your money will not be wasted.
Some of the recipes are complex, but others are very simple such as marinara sauce and dried pasta. Even if you don't use the recipes, the knowlege about food that you'll gain from this book is worth the purchase price several times over.
Enjoyable but not practical.......2001-02-02
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this cookbook. David Rosengarten is entertaining and absolutely dedicated to great food. Although the text was enjoyable and informative, most of the recipes seem like too much work and they are definitely not for every-day cooking. I have had the book for a couple of years and still have not actually tried any of the recipes. If you enjoy reading about food, this book is well worth it, but unless you are looking for very elaborate recipes for entertaining, don't buy it for the recipes.
If only he had written more.......2001-01-22
David Rosengarten writes this book not only to impart favorite recipes of his but also his reflections about food. Part travelogue, part cooking book, he ably imparts a love for not only food but also gastronomy, or the lifestyle of food and partaking of the pleasures of the table.
Don't buy this cookbook if you don't want to expand your culinary horizons, don't buy this if you aren't a little fussy about your food, and don't buy this book if you are looking for quick and dirty recipes with the ingredients you already have in your kitchen. This book is essential for everyone else.

Tasty, fast, easy, healthy and filling!.......2005-02-08
This is my FAVORITE cookbook! It has lots and lots of recipes that have 200-400 calories per serving, are low fat, and all are complete meals. I like the fact that the authors incorporate so many vegetables into each recipe (I dislike a lot of cookbooks for their lack of veggies) and that each one takes less than 50 minutes on average (prep plus cooking time). Every recipe gives you an estimated prep time, cooking time and the nutritional content (cals, fat, sat fat, sodium, cholesterol, carbs and protein). There's a selection of skillet meals, oven meals and others. Just about every recipe I've tried has been excellent and (important to me) the serving size quoted has been FILLING. Nothing worse than being told a serving is 350 cals and then having to eat 2 servings to fill up. We end up cooking every second night - there's enough to have leftovers the second night (every recipe is for 4 servings). Some favorites include chicken with peanut sauce, vegetable frittata and easy chili. We cook something different every night so we're getting MUCH more variety than we used to.
This is not a cookbook for people who like to use packets and other conveniences: the ingredients are about 90% fresh (fresh herbs and ginger etc). You may have to shop a little differently to make sure you have all the ingredients. (I decide ahead of time what we'll be eating for the week and base my shopping list on those meals). Trust me, the freshness DOES make a difference to the taste and I've begun to reject recipes from other books that use the convenient/processed route. I thought it would cost more to cook with fresh ingredients, but because there are leftovers I end up cooking half as many meals so it really doesn't cost any more - less in fact. These are quick recipes that I make after work in the evenings even though there is some prep time - like I said, 30-50min per recipe. Good stuff! I need to find more books like this!

Exotic Ethiopian Cooking : Sociey, Culture, Hospitality, and Traditions. Revised Extended Edition. 178 Tested Recipes. With Food Composition Tables.

Taste of Eritrea provides 100 recipes and a substantial amount of background on this little-known country on the eastern coast of Africa. The cooking of Eritrea shows strong influences from such diverse regions as neighboring Ethiopia, former ruler Italy, Turkey, and England. From Ethiopia comes the use of berberé, a fiery blend of red chilies, garlic, ginger and other aromatic spices; ghee, a kind of clarified butter seasoned with ginger and a distinctive blend of other ingredients, including celery seed and fenugreek; and ingera, a sourdough flatbread made from wheat flour or teff, a local grain. This dish of towel-size, spongy bread is used as both plate and eating utensil by Eritreans. Like the Ethiopians, they eat with their hands, tearing off pieces of this moist bread and using it to convey every bite of food to their mouth.
It may seem odd to find pizza and lasagna in an African cookbook, but while few Italians remain in their country, Eritreans still eat spaghetti, drink espresso, and love Macedonia di Frutta, a mixed fruit salad served everywhere. Easy dishes likely to please include Alicha, a mixed vegetable curry; spiced Eritrean Doughnuts; and Doro Zigni, a spicy chicken stew akin to the incendiary wats of Ethiopia. Author Olivia Warren opens Taste of Eritrea with a good description of the country, its history, and culture. Anyone planning a trip there will also find it somewhat useful as a travel guide. --Dana Jacobi

Ok I AM AN ERITREAN.......2007-07-16
The book was nice enough but was not a true representative of Eritrean cooking I bought the book because I admire how the author felt a love for my country.
Bless you
This isn't the way to do it...................2004-07-09
Okay, I've lived in Eritrea, and I can assure y'all: what this book is presenting is NOT authentic Eritrean cuisine!!! The recipes are very simplified and a lot of spices and ingredients are missing. The cooking technique isn't properly described, either. And half the book is full of Italian recipes..... so, if you're really interested in Eritrean cooking, buy "Exotic Ethiopian Cooking" by Daniel Jote Mesfin instead. Eritrean and Ethiopian cooking is almost the same (Ethiopian is even more versatile).
I give this book 1 star, because the author at least tried.... and the way she writes about the Eritrean culture in the introduction showes that she got a lot of love for the country.
Taste of Eritrea Disappoints.......2003-10-19
My title says it all. Of the 100 or so recipes in this book, most are of Italian vintage. The remainder are fairly humdrum versions of traditional Ethiopian dishes, better recipes for which are widely available (The Africa News Cookbook; Dorinda Hafner's Taste of Africa, etc.). Further, the author's Ethiopian ingredients are limited to berbere, onions, and tomato paste, guaranteeing that each new dish the reader prepares is going to taste a good deal like the last one.
Either the author is herself an inexperienced cook, or she is writing down to those who are. For example, she gives extensive instructions for boning a chicken breast on the assertion that "you cannot buy this cut of chicken," contrary to the evidence available at any North American supermarket.
Warren's affection for Eritrea is evident in her introduction and the anecdotes that accompany some of the recipes. But spending a little time in a country doesn't usually qualify a traveller to write a cookbook when she gets home.
Eritrean Food?.......2000-07-15
It seemed puzzling that Eritrean food consisted of Ethiopian Spices and Italian recipies. Is there nothing original in this cook book. If I wanted Italian Food or Ethiopian Food then I would buy those cook books. The book is an excellent introduction of Eritrea.
A splendid introduction to Eritrean cuisine!.......2000-03-04
Eritrea is one of Africa's most beautiful, interesting countries, and offers a unique cuisine drawn from a culinary tradition influenced by Italians, Turks, British, Egyptians, and Ethiopians. From Eritrean Papaya Juice, Dense Dinner Rolls, and Spiced Barley Squares, to Piquant Fish Stew, Roast Pigeon, and Custard with Caramelized Sugar, Taste Of Eritrea offers mover than 100 easy-to-follow recipes, each adapted for the Western kitchen. Taste Of Eritrea is further enhanced with an insightful and informative introduction, along with Olivia Warren's own reminiscences about her time in the country along with fascinating glimpses of the history, culture and traditions of Eritrea.
