Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Spirituality, optimism, career planning, and self-help neatly blend together in this highly useful guidebook on living one's true purpose. Step by step, Adrienne shows readers how to discover one's calling (learning how to take advantage of synchronicity, intuition, and "uncommon sense") and organize life accordingly. This coauthor of The Celestine Prophecy does not promise a payoff of material wealth or worldly fame. Rather, she suggests that "writing your own job description" and "doing the dream" will result in a more spiritual and meaningful life. Her most impressive leadership comes in the section called "Deep Water," where she addresses the obstacles and suffering that frequently block the path to enlightenment. --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars A great guide book for a seeker of Purpose.......2007-05-30

Carol Adrienne has written an excellent primer on the subject of Purpose. Whether you are a writer or speaker on the subject of Purpose, this book provides some important guidelines to simplifying an otherwise complex subject. The insights and the 'Talking to Yourself'sections at the end of each chapter are especially helpful.

5 out of 5 stars excellant career guidance.......2006-03-09

I found this a very helpful book filled with ideas for people to find their purpose. I am a career guidance councelor and ninety percent of my clients do not have a purpose for why they are doing what they are doing in their work. They come to me saying "somethings missing in my work or life". It's often because they do not have a purpose which this book can help them create. Purpose is something we create or decide on. Many people think it's something mystical and we discover it by accident. This book gives people specific tools to help identify a meaningful purpose.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point.......2004-02-16

The optimism in this book combined with its emphasis on the link between intuition and synchronicity was infectious. I wanted to learn more! A new book that I stumbled across has become my companion to this one. It is called LUCKY YOU!, by Randall Fitzgerald, and it takes this book's themes and subject matter and adds to it information about using dreamwork and meditation practices and even prayer to help create streaks of good luck in our lives. Both books are relentlessly inspiring and full of optimism and hope. I liked all of the stories and the author's own anecdotes about creating good fortune.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring true stories and practical spirituality!.......2003-10-07

The co-author of The Celestine Prophecy Experiential Guide has put together this excellent collection of suggestions, ideas and true life stories to inspire one to find one's higher purpose, and a jolly good job it does! It is interesting, well-written and entertaining throughout, with each chapter finishing with a few straightforward questions and exercises to move you on in the right direction. Part three, "deep water", deals masterfully with the darker and more difficult experiences one sometimes has while trying to connect more deeply with the soul's purpose.

A major theme is developing an awareness of synchronicity (meaningful co-incidence) experiences as guiding posts for deeper personal development. There are a large number of interviews with people from a wide range of backgrounds, all of whom have come to find their unique purpose through such ideas. Quotes from the famous such as the Dalai Lama and Frank Zappa (!), and not so famous are also highlighted throughout the text e.g."intuition is the creative, universal intention expressing through you" and "either I am lost, crazy and screwed up, or I am found and on a difficult part of the path".

I found the chapter on "the void" particularly supportive, especially the section on "holding your centre during confusion, chaos and fear". Carol Adrienne is not afraid to explore the sometimes harsh realities of the spiritual journey, but the book is essentially upbeat and positively inspirational.

During a traditional Quaker meeting, the Friends sit in silent meditation. No one speaks unless they are moved to do so through the "still, small voice" of God within. As a result, spoken words are often spare, clear, and wise. A Quaker Book of Wisdom reads like the voice of a Sunday morning meeting. Author Robert Lawrence Smith is a lifelong Quaker and former headmaster of the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. (Chelsea Clinton's former alma mater). Reflecting on topics such as silence, simplicity, business, and family, Smith offers guidance on how to "let your life speak"--an important premise to the Quaker life of service. Smith's humble self-disclosures make this slim book especially endearing and accessible. In the chapter "Conscience," he divulges battlefield horrors that rival those in Saving Private Ryan--images that still haunt him long after he chose to fight fascism during World War II instead of becoming a conscientious objector, as many Quakers did. In the next chapter, "Non-Violence," Smith writes of an eye-opening shopping trip to Toys R Us where the action-figure warmongers are far more attractive to his grandson than the checkers game they were planning to purchase. In the final chapter, Smith offers "Ten Life Lessons" that he wishes someone had shared with him when he was growing up. Indeed, these lessons are even more valuable and certainly more provocative than the ones we learned in kindergarten. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

"The most valuable aspect of religion," writes Robert Lawrence Smith, "is that it provides us with a framework for living. I have always felt that the beauty and power of Quakerism is that it exhorts us to live more simply, more truthfully, more charitably."

Taking his inspiration from the teaching of the first Quaker, George Fox, and from his own nine generations of Quaker forebears, Smith speaks to all of us who are seeking a way to make our lives simpler, more meaningful, and more useful. Beginning with the Quaker belief that "There is that of God in every person," Smith explores the ways in which we can harness the inner light of God that dwells in each of us to guide the personal choices and challenges we face every day. How to live and speak truthfully. How to listen for, trust, and act on our conscience. How to make our work an expression of the best that is in us.

Using vivid examples from his own life, Smith writes eloquently of Quaker Meeting, his decision to fight in World War II, and later to oppose the Vietnam War. From his work as an educator and headmaster to his role as a husband and father, Smith quietly convinces that the lofty ideals of Quakerism offer all of us practical tools for leading a more meaningful life. His book culminates with a moving letter to his grandchildren which imparts ten lessons for "letting your life speak."

This book is excellent. If you want to read something that makes you think, this is a great book for you!

5 out of 5 stars Profound book about a profound spiritual teaching.......2007-05-07

Reading this book, I thought that there is as much here for the Buddhist or the Taoist as there is for the Friend. Perhaps this is because what lies at the core of each of the world's faiths is the unifying message of mysticism. Quakerism comes as close to mysticism in religion as you're likely to find in the West. The author's account of Quakerism as well as how the inner sought spirit informs his life is deeply profound and inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars A deeper understanding to what faith is all about.......2006-10-13

As an old/new member of the Quaker faith this book was not just some shallow sayings, with washed up meanings, but instead it was truly amazing! I have a heritage of Quakers within my family and I found this to be a worthwhile read. While some have labeled this a liberal book, with liberal Quaker views, I would argue that the theology and basis of Quakerism is to see the light in every person regardless of creed or religion. Smith does an excellent job of reinforcing these ideals for me, and furthermore makes it clear in each chapter what is expected of those who are Quakers. Simply, it comes down to a choice ocean of light or darkness, and I chose the light with the help of this great book.

5 out of 5 stars A Breath of Spiritual Fresh Air.......2005-08-09

This little book is clear, thought-provoking, and most of all, inspiring. I have recommended it to all my friends and I have purchased it as a gift for one. How refreshing to be exposed to wisdom as opposed to indoctrination and dogma. It is a breath of spiritual fresh air.

3 out of 5 stars A so-so book..........2005-04-16

This book is not a bad book per se (I'd give it three and a half stars if that were possible), but it definately leaves out A LOT of information. I'm taking it upon myself to give the rest of the information the book should have given, in four major points:

1) This book represents just one type of Quakerism, namely the Liberal Quakers, and the author himself is from the liberal end of the Liberal Quakers. That's not a bad thing in and of itself, but it should have been pointed out on the book, or somewhere in the description. Most Quakers in the world today are Christian and we always have been a Christian Society. Many of the values this book discusses are debatable at best and do not represent Quakerism as a whole. That's why I think it could have been called "A Liberal Quaker Book Of Wisdom" or "A Hicksite Quaker Book Of Wisdom". If that's what one is looking for, great--but it should be made known before the book is purchased, I feel.

2) The "life lessons" in this book are actually just essays (more or less) loosely on different topics by the author. The book kind of portrays itself as a whole volume, i.e., one that is more "solid", but it could have been published as a bunch of little books as well.

3) The school that the author used to head, Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., is one of the most expensive day schools in the county (and probably in the world). Mainly politicians' kids and children of important public figures go there--precious few Quaker kids could ever afford it. That isn't mentioned at all in the essay on simplicity and it really should have been. His former status of head of the school is used as a selling point of the book, but in my view, it doesn't tell the whole story for those not familiar with Sidwell Friends School.

4) It doesn't really contain that much information. The book itself is very small and square shaped, and it is printed in large font with what looks (to me) to be double-spaced or nearly double-spaced lines. The cover (on the softcover version) is actually rather thin, even for a softcover book, and prone to ripping. I personally feel that even $9 is too much to pay for this book.

In conclusion, I really don't like to give a negative review of a Friends' book, but this one is less than excellent and in many ways does not tell the whole story.

If a person is new to Quakerism or just looking for general Quaker infomation, I would whole-heartedly recommend Wilmer A. Cooper's book, "A Living Faith" (ISBN 0944350534). It is truly one of the better Quaker books written in recent years. It addresses both Liberal and Orthodox Quakerism as well as other groups such as Conservatives and Independent Meetings. It far excels this one in just about every way, but it does cost a few dollars more (it's a much larger book).

All of Doreen's books are geared toward communicating w/ the angelic realm. Many are also "how to's" to aid each and every one of us to also communicate w/ the angels. However, most of us are not as proficient at this task as Doreen is.. and many of us have questions we wish the angels would answer.

This book is almost like a "Frequently Asked Question" list... Doreen provides Divine Prescriptions, directly from the angels, on many of life's questions and issues. You could read through the book all at once, or use it as a reference whenever somethign specific pops up.

There is also a portion of the book devoted to helping us "receive these messages on our own".. and a section on how to give an angel reading and use the oracle cards... I found this section especially helpful..

This book goes over several areas of life and shows how to compassionately and ethically deliver sometimes difficult "messages" that we receive. It shows how to do readings for yourself, loved ones, and professionally. This book demonstrates that you don't need to be "special" to deliver Divine messages. By far my favorite Doreen Virtue Book.

5 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking and warmly spiritual book.......2001-12-14

Engagingly written by Doreen Virtue, Divine Prescriptions: Using Your Sixth Sense -- Spiritual Solutions For You And Your Loved Ones expands upon the wisdom of its predecessor volume, Divine Guidance (1580630898), in showing the reader how to use one's sixth sense and openness to God to receive healing messages from guardian angels -- especially when medical, business, and legal remedies fail, faith remains and hope for the future endures. Diverse chapters address listening to divine guidance in areas such as dating and seeking soulmates, advancing one's career, and how to receive and deliver divine prescriptions. Divine Prescriptions is a very highly recommended, thought-provoking, and warmly spiritual book.

5 out of 5 stars Learning to tune into Divine messages with Dr. Virtue.......2001-02-02

Dr. Virtue teaches that everyone can receive Divine prescriptions, and she encourages all of us to share in this wondrous experience. She also shares information on how to receive and relay Divine messages for others. A must-read for those on a spiritual path who crave more information about the angelic realm!

5 out of 5 stars Ask your angels why wouldn't you get this cassette?.......2000-10-10

I was introduced to Doreen Virtue's works about a month ago and am a new fan. This is a powerful tape filled with amazing stories and suggestions about working blending life and spirit. I recommend this piece to anyone improving the quality of their lives because this is just another stip towards fulfillment.

5 out of 5 stars Eyeopening.......2007-05-18

I absolutely loved this book and it opened my eyes to so many truths. I
would recommend it to anyone going through a difficult time and wondering
why God allowed things to happen in their life that He could have stopped.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Encouragement When Life Doesn't Make Sense.......2007-02-21

Whether going through the loss of a job, loved one, divorce, or any other difficult situation, Dobson encourages the reader to keep trusting in God and His goodness when trials come.

The book's chapters are as follows:

1. When God Doesn't Make Sense
2. The Betrayal Barrier
3. God Makes Sense Even When He Doesn't Make Sense
4. Acceptance or Despair
5. He Will Deliver Us, but If Not
6. Questions and Answers
7. The Adversity Principle
8. Faith Must Be Tough
9. The Wages of Sin
10. More Questions and Answers
11. Beyond the Betrayal Barrier

While Dobson does mention that some of our hardships result from our bad choices, he is also quick to add that some of life's trials happen to us because that's just the way life is!

A great encouragement to anyone who is going through difficult struggles and also to help prepare someone before they do go through struggles.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars When God Doesn't Make Sense.......2007-01-12

A friend from church gave me this book as my husband and I were stuggling with heartache and trials as as we were trying to keep our faith and understand why our son was in the hospital dying as a result of a head on collision which was caused by a drunken driver. Our faith is what kept us going each day and prayers. This book is one I will read again and again. Dr Dobson brought hope to us through this book. I purchased two copies of this and gave them to friends who were also dealing with loved ones that had been in automobile accidents. I personally took one day at a time as it was so much to face each day and and still do as I see our son continue to struggle after almost a year. God is good and He is faithful and I will continue to put my trust in Him as the book tells one....God has plans and purposes for our lives only we are not privy to them.

4 out of 5 stars Must by accompanied with prayer.......2007-01-07

I noticed the review titled "Not meant for thinkers" and while I do not come to the same conclusion, I did experience some of his frustration. I am a huge Dr. Dobson fan and have read and enjoyed many of his books. I expected this book to have a good solid answer, but it doesn't - probably because one does not exist. It actually shook my faith even more to read about these amazing, selfless, Godly people whose desparate life and death pleas to God were not answered. Through much prayer I did find some peace. We will all, without doubt, face heartache in this life. What determines whether or not our prayers will be answered the way we want is often beyond our comprehension. But we can choose to face those difficult times with a God who loves us, promises to comfort us, and wants a relationship with us.

5 out of 5 stars Does Your Tragedy Prove You're Going To Hell?.......2006-12-24

Dr. Dobson shows with Bible versus and biography that having tragedy in your life doesn't prove you're going to Hell, like so many people these days would have you belive!

Book Description

G. K. Chesterton was one of the most well-known and beloved writers of his time. Yet he has been strangely neglected today. This book is the perfect introduction to Chesterton. Ahlquist is an able guide who takes the reader through twelve of Chesterton's most important books as well as the famous Father Brown stories.

One of the problems with approaching Chesterton is that he was so prolific that the reader is simply overwhelmed. But Ahlquist makes the literary giant accessible, highlighting Chesterton's amazing reach, keen insight, and marvelous wit. Each chapter is liberally spiced with Chesterton's striking quotations.

There is something special that runs throughout Chesterton's books that sets him apart from the confusing philosophies of the modern world. That common thread in Chesterton's writings is common sense. It is instantly recognizable and utterly refreshing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fun Read on G.K. Chesterton.......2007-05-24

Dale Ahlquist book about G.K. Chesterton and his major works is a great way for one to be introduced to this great writer and thinker and if one has already read Chesterton (like me), one will still find it useful and a fun book that compiles his most famous works with commentary about the relevance of Chesterton's thoughts and ideas, even for today.

Ahlquist does a wonderful job of inserting Chesterton's quotes and then demonstrating there relevance for then and now. He demonstrates the logical consistency in his arguments. Chapters that excel are "Eugenics and Other Evils", "The Everlasting Man", "What's Wrong with the World." Easy, quick, and entertaining read.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect "First" Chesterton Book.......2005-12-30

If you want to read Chesterton, and don't know which book to start with, start with this one. It isn't *by* Chesterton, but will help you decide which book of Chesterton's you'd like to read first.

There are a lot of good Chesterton quotes, and a lot of plain common sense written in this book, it is easy to read, and I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Overview of Chesterton.......2005-07-22

This book is a wonderful overview of Chesterton and his work. If you are just discovering the works of this amazing writer this book is a good place to start. With a great summarization of some of his best works you will have a better I idea of what you want to read next. This book places emphasis on Chesterton's works that defend Christianity and the Roman Catholic faith.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Book for the Initiated & for the Uninitiated.......2005-07-03

Though I had heard about Chesterton for a number of years, I could never find anyone who had read him who could give me some reasonable idea about the man or about what he wrote. Well, if you're like me, this is the book that you should definitely buy and read. Even if you have read Chesterton or other books about him and his writing, you should buy and read this book to gain perspective on and insight into the man and what he wrote. Ahlquist is like one of those great high school or university teachers who not only knows his subject very well, but who knows just what to emphasize and how to explain his subject so as to enlighten and to educate his students and thereby to get the students to delve into the subject more. Ahlquist's style of writing is clear, very informative and humourous, and, no doubt, reflects the influence of Chesterton's writing style. This book would be a useful companion to anyone who has read or who might want to read Chesterton.

4 out of 5 stars Hooked On Common Sense.......2004-03-14

I have had a curiousity about Chesterton for a number of years. Before I chose one of his works, I decided to purchase this book to determine first of all, whether I wanted to spend time with Chesterton, and secondly, if I did, where do I start. Ahlquist has done an excellent job in drawing me in. I am hooked and will begin in earnest. I was fascinated to read passages that Chesterton wrote in the early 20th Century that apply just as well to events in the world today. Common sense is timeless.

There is so much to quote from. For instance..."Chesterton says men do not grow tired of evil but of good. They stop worshipping God and start worshipping idols, their own bad imitations of God, and they become as wooden as the thing they worship. They start worshipping nature and become unnatural. They start worshipping sex and become perverted. Men start lusting after men and become unmanly."

And this was written nearly 100 years ago...Get yourself this book and get hooked on common sense.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful guide for your inner journey.......2004-06-29

Paula Reeves has given us a guide to uncovering our true self. She gently shows us the way through insightful "heart notes" or exercises where one may explore the inner world of our deepest feelings.
With Paula's blessing, I led an 8 week discussion group based on her wonderful book at the Mind-Body Center where I am a Holistic Nurse. The class participants loved the book. As we shared our experiences with the "heart notes" each week, we laughed and cried and opened our hearts to one another. For some, it provided a new perspective. For others, it was a reminder of the way back home to our hearts. For all, it was a joyful experience.
Take the journey, it is worth the trip!

5 out of 5 stars Isn't the Heart always a lonely hunter?.......2004-04-13

Ethan Frome's novel addressed just this concept in his novel, "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter," but addressed it from an entirely different perspective, as a story, instead of an analysis, so it is finally a wise perspective to address the actual mechanics of this all too human a journey. While some tend to find their deepest desires made satisfied by religion, the stages of our knowledge tend to define those desires by those experiences we may have missed at some point in life that we felt we would like to have had, or the person with whom we might have been able to develop that so close relationship that we define as one that honors the love we have the capacity to give, or the mountains of achievement yet unconquered. A most common reality is that the longer we live, the more we desire to correct the flaws by which mankind lives, and we perceive the fulfillment of those important failures to be a central focus unless we reach that fork where we must decide to "let it be" and dismiss the misery, and suffering that we see around us. As RFK once said, some ask why, he asked why not. At that fork, the why not "cure or try to cure" those things which need our ideas of morality and ethics and justice to do so. In the unfolding of our greater capacity in later years, this sense of urgency may take a greater part of our concentration, yet still not fulfill those personal needs that we are missing. So, personal reflection well spent can offer the opportunity not to deny ourselves what we wish for others, and recognize that sacrifice is not always the best way to heal oneself, must as the physician said to the other, "physician, heal thyself." If mankind was able to do that, in theory, those deepest desires might become not wishful thinking, or unrealistic dreams, but the realities they were intended to be.

5 out of 5 stars An Intimate Experience.......2003-07-14

Heart Sense invited me to intimately experience the complex intelligence of the heart. As the author's words resonated through me, I found myself becoming excited and curious yet strangely quiet. Intrigued by the process, I settled into a journey that took me to a level of self-discovery that profoundly deepened my awareness-such a gift but far from the only one the book offered. In a powerful and eloquent manner, the author engaged my heart and stimulated my mind. Dr. Reeves skillfully demonstrated her intellectual wisdom as she integrated her broad base of training and education. With superb acuity, she combined theory and practice with years of multi-cultural experience that led me from the surgeon's table to the Outback of Australia.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic in its Time.......2003-04-25

In reading Heart Sense by Dr. Paula Reeves,I have found this book to be a vast and deep sounce of the most practical and applicable knowledge and wisdom for changing your life from a fate-oriented, sad and unfulfilled life to one of living consciously into your own personal destiny .Dr. Reeves has given us a truly brilliant blueprint intergrating the current scientific and medical research with the intuitive wisdom of the body mind heart. For me, this is the jewel in an immense array of "self-help" books out there. It is so much more that it falls beyond that catagory. Thank you, Dr. Reeves, for this profound work.

5 out of 5 stars Heart Sense is heart-felt wisdom!.......2003-04-25

I have just finished reading and doing several of the exercises in Dr. Reeves' wonderful book. She is bold, bone-honest and completely compassionate. What a joy! While her book seems to me to be mostly from the perspective of wise simplicity, she offers the reader enough data/facts/hard evidence and sound psychological theory to ground her method and her message.

Which is, if I understand correctly --- you have a soul and if you listen to your heart, you can live from it and toward it and within it. That's what I want for my life. Dr. Reeves offers an exemplary examination of what that would look like and suggestions for how to do it. If you are also interested in a heart-centered way of living, read her book.

The book is packed with information on how to change over to a healthy lifestyle. Has lots of good information and some good receipes at the end.

2 out of 5 stars A Few Good Concepts.......2006-05-17

I am familiar with this book and read it at the invitation of my Father who had cancer and eventually went on to be an elite Health Minister with Hallelujah Acres.

My concerns with regard to this book are not with a vegan diet which I understand and observe many to be on and to do just fine.

My concerns are with the philosophy and teachings underpinning the book and how it is used to profit the author and the organization of Hallelujah Acres which seeks not just to have you change your diet, but to buy their products.

The entire premise of this book theologically is based upon George Malkmus' interpretation of Gen 1:29 which he takes to mean that God created mankind to eat only fruits and vegetables. Based upon this interpretation, which is not accepted by a majority of Biblical Scholars, Malkmus suggests that meat entered the human diet after the Noah's Flood. While he does not suggest necessarily that eating meat itself is sinful, he does strongly push the idea that this was God's original plan for diet and therefore anyone seeking to eat optimally should consider this as the first choice.

He goes further to teach that illness is caused and/or escalated by what he deems the Standard American Diet (conveniently acronymed as SAD for emphasis.)

Chielf culprits are any and all meat products, dairy products and then sugar, flour, salt.

It would be one thing if he left it here and invited you to join him with his diet plan.

He doesn't however.

Based on this rather shaky premise of questionable theology and some pretty questionable science and nutrition teaching that suggests there is an esoteric life giving quality to eating live food as opposed to "dead" food he goes on to teach that there are things he has come up with to go above and beyond eating natural raw food.

This is the real point of the book in my opinion.

He wants you to buy BarleyMax, a product he sells through his traditional multi-level marketing business for a profit.

This is important enough to repeat.

Hallelujah Acres is not a ministry in a formal sense at all. They are a business and they sell products. Malkmus, through his weekly newsletter often appeals to what he does and calls it a ministry. He justifies it and calls "ministry" such actions as giving free seminars, free electronic newsletters, counselors etc and holds that up as "proof" of his ministry. Other companies call this "marketing."

Nutritionally their featured product "BarleyMax" (before this they uses an AMA product names "BarleyGreen" which received warning from the FDA for excessive claims beyond what science could demonstrate) is sold by them and their "Health Ministers" often serve as financial marketing partners who in turn profit from their ministry.

Recent developments in their teachings include now supplimenting their diet with vitamin B12 which is a common deficiency in Vegans and can lead to irreversible nerve damage. They resisted this recommendation for years despite overwhelming evidence of the need for this suppliment and then conveniently began to offer the suppliment themselves; another cash flow.

Often supporters of this diet frame their support for this diet in spiritual terms implying or outright claiming that this is God's diet plan and any who oppose their teaching or question their claims are attacking God and supporting Satan.

The primary method of support are an overwhelming number of testimonies regularly put out from people who are on the diet. Consistent in these testimonies are that many are on the front end of the diet and very excited about the weight loss and energy they have. Updates on these people is rare. There are always new people coming on who are caught up in the excitement and willing to claim healings and health improvement.

Medical verification of these claims is not consistent.

George Malkmus' own personal testimony of healing from cancer is based upon examinations by chiropractors and there is no pathology or medical records to substantiate his claims.

Tied into this teaching is a very strong negative assessment of the medical profession and the outright implication that they are profiteers seeking to perpetuate illness for their own gain in many instances.

Ironically, in recent years, Malkmus has suffered a stroke and had high blood pressure which his diet and herb treatments could not control. He now sees a doctor and is on medications to control this condition. There is some question as to the nature of the stroke itself and whether it might not have been caused or exacerbated by his diet's deficiencies.

In closing let me tell you how the story of my father ended. He was diagnosed in October of 1999 with kidney cancer in the 4th stage. He went on the Hallelujah Diet when the medical prognosis offered little hope. He did make remarkable progress although it was never medically verified as he refused to see a doctor.

He dropped 70 pounds, exercised and did seem to do very well and went beyond the 2 year outside window he was given as an estimate by the doctors. He was convinced he was healed and gave a great deal of credit to the Hallelujah Diet for his progress.

In July of 2004 he travelled to Shelby, North Carolina to become an elite Health Minister to step up his promoting of this diet to the many people that were encouraged by his testimony.

He submitted a testimony to Hallelujah Acres and they published it in their Health Tips Newsletter in August of 2004 emphasising his claim of healing and his praise of their diet despite the fact that in the testimony itself he acknowledged it was not verified medically.

My dad finally began to go to see 2 doctors in Mexico where he retired to when he began to have serious health issues and pain. In October of 2004, just 3 months after his testimony of healing was published, it was confirmed that his cancer had furhter metasticized and spread to 6 other organs.

Dad refused further medical treatment even for pain management, and died on Christmas morning of 2004, 5 months after his testimony.

In fairness to Hallelujah Acres, I sent them an update of his story recently asking them to publish the update in their newsletter. They did so, but only after considerable pressure on my part to get an answer from them and when they did publish the e-mail they edited out the date of death and allowed people to think by implcation that Dad lived longer than he did. They also stated, without any medical support that Dad was in remission and then inferred that he came out of "remission" due to some actions of his own, rather than any shortcomings of the diet.

I think there are many good elements to a vegan diet and than managed carefully it leads to weight loss, a correction of some medical conditions and a sense of energy and well-being for many people.

I am not against veganism or diet.

I am skeptical of the Hallelujah Diet's inner teachings, workings and their personal profiting from their diet plan which they entwine with questionable theology, questionable science and less than honest representations of their for-profit status and manipulation of testimonies and claims.

Please read this book with this in mind, do some additional research on your own. Don't accept the claims of this organization without checking their claims, teachings and science from other sources as well.

5 out of 5 stars Buy Two - One for you and one to share.......2006-01-23

I first purchased this book 6 years ago when my mother was diagnosed with cancer. Her cancer was terminal, but it made a difference in her mind, spirit as well as body during the last 8 months of her life to be eating well. The application of information from this book not only kept her spirits up but assisted her body in fighting off the horrible effects of radiation and chemotherapy. It has made a difference in mine and many other lives as well. I have lent this book out on so many occassions and have eventually lost track of it so I decided to go ahead and purchase another copy for myself and get an extra as my "loaner" so that I would never be without.

5 out of 5 stars Wake up America! Get back to healthy food before it's too late!.......2005-12-25

I read this book a long time ago. It was a springboard for further research into the vegan/vegetarian/raw food lifestyle, which I and my husband have been following for several years.

My original goal with my research was to reduce the amount of medication my husband takes for his asthma, and to reduce my thyroid medication. I can now say that we have been able to reduce our medication. We've also both lost weight, have more energy, no longer have any aches and pains, feel so much better and at 52 years of age, actually look younger than our years.

Rev. Malkmus' book is a great starter book for people wanting to learn more about how to eliminate sickness, cut down on prescription medicine and take control of their own bodies through nutrition. Hallelujah Acres is NOT a cult, but are people who went through training to become Health Ministers, and who care about educating people in their church and families and friends about getting well and living long healthy lives.

Book Description

What really goes on in a man's mind? How does he perceive the world, and how does that perception differ from a woman's view of reality? And how can knowing what a husband, son, father, or male colleague is really like help a woman succeed in her relationships with the male half of the species? Dr. Kevin Leman gives women an up-close and personal look at how the "other half" thinks, feels, and behaves. Topics include: understanding the male sex drive, understanding the boy your husband once was (and in some ways still is), and what makes a husband fulfilled, working with the male ego, advice for single and divorced women, and building a stronger relationship with your father. Leman says, "This is a hard-hitting book that finally tells it like it is. Half the women who read it probably won't believe it, but the half who take it to heart will have very grateful husbands who will return the love tenfold!"

This book has helped to give me a fulfilling and satisfying marriage. By giving my husband the sex, attention, affection, playfulness, respect, and honest praise that he yearns for, he's given me everything I need and more!
As to the comment the other reviewer made about your husband having two hands of his own... yes, he does, and if you give him a break now and again, maybe he'll use them on you as a completely unselfish treat. If you read any of his other books, you'll notice that he has a sense of humor and great respect, admiration, and love for his wife... there is no disrespect in his jokes. And the part at the ballgame with Moonhead? I love the idea of my husband recognizing that lusting after another woman is cheating and the idea of him having a friend he can admit it to and be held accountable by.

5 out of 5 stars In Reality, This is a Great Book...and We Live in Reality.......2006-08-27

I can't say enough about this book. I am almost finished after having it only 3 days. I am a Christian, and found this book a great guideline on how to deal with issues with my husband. I felt like my husband and I were having the same fight over and over again, with no positive outcome. With Dr. Leman's help, I now see my husband's perspective with deeper insight.
I don't understand some of the previous reviewers. If you already think you know the answers to your problems, why are seeking help from Dr. Leman's book? I think some of the comments were based on stubborn ideas, ideas that didn't want to change. If you are wanting someone to validate your thoughts and be "on your side", do not read this book. This book is to help give you your husband's, father's, and son's perspective...not your own.
Anyone seeking some help (with humor), this book will benefit you.
Kudos, Dr. Leman! Again, a job well done.

5 out of 5 stars The Way Men Are.......2004-12-08

As a pastor who counsels many couples, I have found this book useful to help women face the realities about the male of the species. I have seen marriages rejuvinated in certain instances.

Although the author could have been more tactful, he brings home the real facts of life about men and particularly the importance of frequent sex for men. True, not all men fit Leman's mold, but most do. Of course, men will not always admit to being as Leman describes becasue they fear their wives will reject them.

The genders have to learn to accept one another even if they really cannot understand one another.

This is not a cure all for all marriage problems, but it will help enhance many marriages. If nothing else, women will read a real-life explanation as to how most men work. Whether they believe it or not is another issue.

2 out of 5 stars True Facts from a Condescending Author.......2004-08-14

Mr. Leman may be a good man and he may have some insight into men, but his writing style is ruthlessly condescending. I am in chapter one and doubt I'll keep going.

Whether or not the following is true, this is what it the book has been like for me: it seems as though Mr. Leman is assuming that the women reading this book are stubbornly thinking, "Hah! I know all there is to know about men!" and that he's trying to convince all of us as to how wrong we are. His presumption is appalling; I get the feeling that he feels that we women not only know almost nothing about men, but we are also beligerent in our will to cling to this ignorance! He's guilty of name-dropping (unnecessarily pointing out that James Dobson and Gary Smalley are "good friends" of his), and he just keeps on phrasing his sentences and crafting his arguments in a "There, there, little darling, I know this will shock you, but you must hear the truth" kind of way.

For the practical information (so far), I'd give him a four, maybe, but for condescention I'd rate this a negative ten. It really is that bad. I'm going to look for other books on this topic that aren't so nearly degrading to read.

3 out of 5 stars Leman "SHOULD" not have said that.......2003-11-12

This began as a very eye-opening book--it presented some things I never in a million years realized about my husband. By about mid-book, however, I began to get REALLY TICKED OFF. Yes, it is my duty and honor as a wife to make my husband happy. I don't care what Leman says, however, I do not have to be his sexual slave and perform a sexual revolution in my home on a weekly basis just to please my husband. What offended me the most? Probably when he said in essence, "I know some nights you're really tired and sex is the last thing you want to involve yourself with so give your husband a hand job, you'll only have to lay there and it will feel incredible to him." I'm sorry, but I don't buy into his notion that men must have sex three to five nights a week or they will cheat on their wives. Grow up, be a big boy and get over it!
Then there was the astonishingly cruel diatribe with his wife. Leman was saying women "SHOULD" on their husbands to much and to prove his point he went into this story about his wife Sande and he visiting a restaurant in which he always orders the same thing. She politely said, "You should try something different." And his reply? "Or maybe I should try out a new wife!" COME ON! The poor woman must have felt horrible, but yes, Leman, I'm sure she got your big, egotistical point.
Oh, and let's not forget his joking around with Moonhead about "committing adultery" because he couldn't take his eyes off some chick at a football game. Haha. That was hilarious. His wife must be Mother Theresa.
Yes, I believe him that men NEED sex to feel loved, just as women need affection and caring and sex to feel loved. But unlike his list of "must dos", I refuse to meet my husband at the end of our driveway without any clothes on, I don't think taking naked photos of myself and putting them in his briefcase is necessary, and rather than "exploring ideas outside of my sexual comfort zone" I think I'll do what I feel is right, not what some man's unrealistic fantasies dictate. I can't believe this book--it's clear he feels women are around to please, care for and obey. And that's it. I'm a mother, I have my own career and I have a dynamite sex life, without feeling I need to be my husband's personal sex slave.
So Kevin Leman, I love your views on parenting, daddy's an daughters and raising boys, but I think I'll stick to my own views on sex in my marriage. And as for the hand jobs ... God gave you hands of your own. Have at it!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty useful.......2007-04-01

This is the kind of thing adults should read, let alone kids. I'm reading it because I can't stand most organized religions, especially the one I was raised with - Christianity. Too stringent and angry for me and not realistic in everyday life, IMO. This Buddhist philosophy book aimed at kids really tells it like it is. I could relate to much of the advice given to kids and their parents. I also feel that it reflects the wisdom I've gained through the school of hard knocks. For example, the chapter on friends is relevant. You can't change other people's bad behavior or even influence it, all you can do is be the best possible you, have personal integrity and compassion for those who treat you badly. Basically, if someone behaves badly, you don't have to wish them to go to hell, they're already there. Great stuff in this book. All adults in America should read this!

5 out of 5 stars A Way of Youth for Everyone.......2005-07-20

This volume deals in a Q & A format with issues of concern to all young people. Although Daisaku Ikeda is a Buddhist leader, his answers deal with humanity and the wisdom inherent in it rather than with religion -- it is for everyone. As one reads through the book, a common message emerges vividly although never dealt with directly: you are most valuable and precious; find your own voice and use it without fear; find your own self and value it deeply. By the end of the book, the reader finds himself/herself viewing things in a very positive light.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2001-08-07

This book is an excellent collection of Buddhist responses to the questions of today's young people. "The Way of Youth" includes topics like building confidence, respecting yourself and others, developing happiness from within, dealing with peer pressure and contributing to a peaceful world. The book is written for a general audience and I believe it appeals to both teens and parents regardless of their religious beliefs. I also highly recommend a book called "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Eastern Wisdom" by a young Buddhist author named Taro Gold. Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Bitesized bits of wisdom, not just for kids.......2001-07-26

I bought this book as a way of offering my daughter guidance from a Buddhist perspective without having to "lecture" (as she would put it...no matter how hard I try not to "lecture"...)and ended up really appreciating it myself. We're surrounded every day with Christian-based motivational books, full of wonderful sentiments, but also pushing a lot of faith-based inspiration that just doesn't fit our lives. This book was, of course, a quick read, but that's perfect for my 12 year old. I was able to just leave it out for her to glance at, and from the few comments she's made, I think it was helpful.

5 out of 5 stars The relevance of Budhhism in life today........2001-07-18

Youth and religion. Seems unusual in this modern world we dwell in. Yet it is the absence of a guiding philosophy in the formative years of our lives that is responsible for a lot of ills of our society today.

In this book, the writer connects very well with the youth and using all his experience and wisdom, shows them the correct path to take. You are sure to find some highly surprising solutions to many common problems here. Surprising because we don't expect usually expect religion to give practical solutions to our everyday problems.

This book would not only help all young people, their parents but also every human being with a youthful spirit!! Really a MUST buy!
