Book Description

#1 bestselling author andwell-known speaker Joyce Meyer explains the ways in which God speaks- and teaches readers how to listen. In the hustle and bustle of today's busy world, sometimes it's hard enough to hear yourself think, much less to take a minute to stop and listen for the voice of God. But learning to recognize God's voice and the many ways in which he speaks is vital toward following his plan. In her book, Joyce Meyer reveals the ways in which God delivers his word-through signs, revelations, and internal confirmation-and the benefits of asking God for the sensitivity to hear his voice. By developing a tender conscience and attentive ears, readers will find peace and fulfillment as God governs each day, each step of the way.

I really love this book (and love the audiobook even more - because Joyce Meyer really gets the point across with her great personality)

I'm not even a Christian and I love this book. It will help you tap into your inuition and learn right from wrong.

Thank You Joyce for such a wonderful book!!!

3 out of 5 stars Love the book, don't love Joyce reading it.......2007-04-24

Wow was I disappointed... I love to hear Joyce preach! I love to read her books! She is so anointed! And she always speaks to me. However, maybe it's just me, but this audiotape wasn't the same. When she read the book she wrote, I found it to be dry and without life. How to Hear from God is another of her great books! Please don't discount the book if you didn't like the audiotape of it being read. I won't get another tape of her reading her books. I'll just continuing listening to her teaching tapes, reading her books, and watching her programs on tv and online.

5 out of 5 stars How to hear from God.......2007-04-19

This book and the study guide that goes with it are helping me understand the word of God. Daily study with these, and other materials from the Joyce Meyer library, is enriching my life. I highly recommend it to anyone, especially those who are studying the bible alone, as I am.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-03-26

I love this book! Joyce Meyer is one of my favorite authors/speakers/teachers. This book will put you on the right track in learning to do what's necessary in your life so you can prepare for a true and meaningful relationship with God. If you want to know Him better and be led by the Spirit, then buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Enlightening!!.......2007-02-01

I have read many of Joyce Meyer's books and I really enjoyed this book the most and in my opinion a very enlightening book as it really has helped me with my relationship with God and how he truly corresponds with us.
This is a must if you want to Hear from God!!!

Book Description

In this transcendent collection, Daniel Ladinsky-best known for his gifted and best-selling translations of the great Sufi poet Hafiz-brings together the timeless work of twelve of the world's finest spiritual writers, six from the East and six from the West. Once again Ladinsky reveals his talent for creating inspiring, profound, and playful versions of classic poems for a modern audience. Rumi's joyous, ecstatic love poems; St. Francis's loving observations of nature through the eyes of Catholicism; Kabir's wild, freeing humor that synthesizes Hindu, Muslim, and Christian beliefs; St. Teresa's sensual verse; and the mystical, healing words of Hafiz-these and other spiritual writers considered to be "conduits of the divine" make up this rich and luminous collection of "love poems from God."

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Ladinsky is beautiful, but deceptive.......2007-08-13

I've had this book for a couple of years and I used to enjoy it. I would recommend caution to anyone thinking of buying it, though. Daniel Ladinsky has a history of writing his own poetry and selling it as though it were translated material. Many people in the West know the name of the Iranian poet, Hafiz, through Ladinsky. Although Ladinsky has admitted at times that his writings are not translations of Hafiz but are based on his vision of Hafiz, he has continued to market his material as though it were actually authored by that poet. Many people now read Ladinsky and think that they are reading Hafiz. I think Daniel Ladinsky is a dishonest person for doing this.

That said, his work is beautiful. If what I've said doesn't bother you, then don't worry about it. This book is a pleasure to read. If you are interested in Hafiz or any of the other sacred poets whose names are meantioned in this book, then I would be very careful and not trust anything that has Daniel Ladinsky's name on the cover.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Voices from God.......2007-07-16

This book of poems is an excellent collection of the voices of mystics from both east and west. Wonderful, short poems reflecting very deep and wonderful experiences of God in many different ways and from many points of view. This is a collection for meditation, for sharing with friends, for opening discussions about the divine, about meaning of life, about compassion, love, detachment, and most importantly about divine humor. These writers are so humble they don't have to have a pretentious God - their God is close at hand, humble (meaning well grounded) and not some pie in the sky idealization. Very excellent reading. Would recommend it to anyone, especially someone who is wondering where they might find God.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring, playful and filled with love........2007-05-25

Daniel Ladinsky's style of translating focuses on the simplicity or essence of the poem. These essential reflections bounce outward like a little child dancing in the rain. I found these poems from various spiritual traditions inspiring me in my own Christian faith as well as my own use of words. The writer of Proverbs warns about the danger of too many words, and maybe these poems remind us of the value in speaking less and allowing the mystery of divine love to hide behind our words.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Spiritual Reading.......2007-04-06

This is by far my favorite spiritual book - the one I would take with me to a desert island. The brief biographies of the various authors are interesting and inspiring, but often when I really want to feel "connected" and more spiritual, I just flip to any open page and read a selection. This was my first introduction to many of the individuals and I am now following up on the individual works of my favorites. I would definitely recommend this book as there is something for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty Lives Inside This Book.......2007-01-06

There's nothing I could add to Rebecca Johnson's wonderful review below. I would however like to comment on the review by M. J. Smith (Seattle, WA USA) which gave this volume one star.

His argument that Daniel Ladinsky has done a disservice to readers by tailoring the translations is flawed. A literal translation is of value to scholors and historians, but not seekers of the heart. For those who are seeking god in ernest, you can trust Mr. Ladinksy to deliver the very soul of the poet he's translating to the front door of your heart. Would Hafiz trust Rumi to translate his works, would St. Francis trust Meister Eckhart to translate his? Yes, and there are people living today who have this same authority...Daniel Ladinsky is one of those people.

Let the worriers worry about hair-splitting and direct translations...and let the lovers revel in these beautiful illumined poems.

2 out of 5 stars Don't expect too much..........2007-08-11

I really liked Canavan's first trilogy (The Magician's Guild) and so I thought I would give this one a try. The first two books weren't that great, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised by the poor quality of this book as well.

Plot Development:
Canavan does a poor job developing the plot. Occurrences seem contrived and hurried. For example, **SPOILER COMING** in the end everyone just says, "Oh well, our God's are dead" and that's it. She goes through the characters one by one, and we get to see each one just sigh and say, "gosh, that sucks". I also thought Auraya being in jail was odd. It was almost as if Canavan didn't know what to do with her and needed some place to keep her until she was needed again at which point she conveniently breaks out of jail.

Character Development:
The character development is weak. Auraya is two-dimensional which made her extremely annoying. Often Canavan just tells you what her characters are thinking or feeling and then adds a cliched action to illustrate it. I don't know how many times I had to read "Auraya was hurt (or some other sad emotion) because (fill in something related to Wilar). She tried to force it from her mind (or some other action to indicate her strength and resolve) and continued on with whatever she was doing". Another classic example is Nekaun. He just all of a sudden becomes this unrecognizably evil and crazy guy.

Depth:
And lastly, everything ends up okay. There is no real suffering. The good guys are good guys, and the bad guys are bad guys. And good things happen to the good guys and bad things happen to the bad guys.

I would say if you don't have anything else to read, and you need something to pass the time, this would be a good book to pick. But don't expect too much.

p.s. Trudi, if you ever visit this site, please please read my comments above. I think you're a good author (based on the first Trilogy I read) and if you could just develop your books (plot, characters, etc) just a little more I think you could be a great author. This is what separates the masters of fantasy from all those other authors we read in-between.

5 out of 5 stars Voice of the Gods - Book 3.......2007-05-31

A terrific continuation of the first two books with lots of surprises at the end. Makes me wish there was a 4th book being considered.

3 out of 5 stars Good yet the ending is hurried and doesn't wrap the story up well.......2007-05-16

I enjoyed this trilogy, yet it took me a while to figure out what bothered me from the beginning. The books are very different- some major characters feature in one and then are dropped in others (Imi, Tryss and Drilli, etc.) I would love to know what happened to them.
Canavan does over-explain some things and glosses over so much more. For example, the lives and personalities of the White are well explained, but we only see the Voices from one almost minor character's view. We are introduced to the Twins and the Gull but never know their histories (and everyone else's histories are explained in detail). The worst part is the ending-- it's so hurried and leaves SO many questions unanswered! Why exactly were the gods so terrible?? We get one story of Chaia and obviously Huan or whatever her name is is a terrible bitch, but that's it! and why does Chaia do what he does in the end?? (I don't want to spoil it for those of you who haven't read the books). I thought he was going to be as bad as the rest, but after a few sentences of "life as a god is boring, I'm over it" we're supposed to believe that?! clearly I am so frusterated by the ending of this series.
Bottom Line: these books are worth reading and I appreciate the characters (clearly I care about them) but the ending leaves a lot to be desired. Canavan is not the greatest writer and jumps around to too many different characters but she creates an interesting, believable world.

5 out of 5 stars I love her writing.......2007-04-17

This is the second series of Trudy Canavan's that I have read and I love every one.

4 out of 5 stars A nice finish....finally........2007-04-10

After the long wait, I finally recieved "Voice of the Gods." To me, the start was slow because it has been over a year since I read the first two books in this trilogy. After knocking the cobwebs off my memory, I quickly became unable to put the book down. I like Canavans style. There is some backstory that I wish we could see. It would be nice to know more of the war of the gods and the immortal involvement. I would like to know more of the history of the twins and the gull especially.

The end of the book left me wanting more. I want to follow the lives of the immortals further. As a stand alone series, this will leave you wanting. Hopefully Canavan will continue the story where this one ends!

Book Description

Based on classic Experiencing God principles, Hearing God's Voice is for those who are ready to listen. Beloved author Henry Blackaby and his son Richard help those who are listening to discern the voice of God, to identify ways He speaks, and to respond to His revelations of His will.

God speaks to individuals in ways that are personal and unique to each person. God will never say anything that contravenes what He has said in the Bible, and usually He confirms what He has said. After you learn to listen to God, hearing from God will be as natural as communicating with a close friend.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-08-23

I highly recommend purchasing and reading "Hearing God's Voice". The book is informative, instructive and grounded in the truth of Biblical scripture. It is one of the best books I have read in a long time.

1 out of 5 stars A book of completely wrong teachings.......2007-02-25

The authors of this book, Henry and Richard Blackaby, write in a congenial manner. The book contains many personal anecdotes which are used to illustrate the principles which the authors advocate. As one would expect, there is much which is similar to what had previously appeared in "Experiencing God", since Henry Blackaby was a co-author of that book. There is no doubt that these authors desire to please God. However, their genuine devotion to God does not automatically imply that what they proclaim is valid. Sincerity and truth are two completely different issues. In reality, the entire general teachings of this book have no foundation in principles from the Bible (in spite of the fact that many passage of Scripture are given). Consequently the teachings they advocate are completely wrong.

The authors briefly interact with the book "Decision Making and the Will of God", by Garry Friesen (p. 3-5). (I am referring to the international edition of the Blackabys' book, and I am not sure whether these page numbers which I mention agree or not with the American edition.) The authors allege that the people who hold the views presented by Friesen "... generally contend that biblical heroes such as Abraham, Moses, Peter, and Paul are not meant to serve as models for modern Christians." That allegation is totally false. To give just one example, in Friesen's book (original 1980 edition, p. 235-239), Paul's life is used as an example of steps in the decision-making process, valid and applicable for believers today. Later the authors claim that this decision-making approach is based upon the assumption that "God is too busy managing a vast universe to bother with the personal lives of billions of people and their comparatively minor issues; ..." (p. 4). Of course, the authors never give a specific instance of any person making such a claim. This absurd allegation would be utterly silly except for the fact that they are serious. Subsequently, they misrepresent Friesen's teaching about the reliability of human reasoning processes. They do correctly quote Friesen (p. 5) as saying, "Most of the time, our five senses are reliable interpreters of reality, for God designed them to be trustworthy." However, they conspicuously neglect to quote his very next sentence: "But whenever there is a conflict between one's own perception of reality and what God says is true, the wise believer trusts God's Word (cf. 2 Kings 6:15-17.)" (These quotes are from p. 248 in Friesen's book, original edition.) The authors then quote Isaiah 55:8-9 in a (false) attempt to refute what Friesen had said. These three examples are classic illustrations of the logical fallacy of a "straw man", which they build up only to knock it over, and thereby give the incorrect conclusion that the teachings of someone else are wrong. The fact that these authors have completely distorted another person's teachings is one clear sign, although not the only one, that they lack an adequate foundation for the principles which they advocate.

Later, they attempt to establish a distinction between doctrine or theology vs. personal experience (p. 10-12). They ask the supposedly rhetorical question: "Why would a person choose a static theology over experiencing the living Christ?" (Notice the extremely biased way in which the question is worded.) However, the question is invalid, for doctrine and experience are not mutually exclusive. (Ironically, the previously-mentioned quotes from Friesen's book are contained in a chapter entitled "Guidance Is Personal".)

It is very important to note that the entire book is permeated with the fallacy of using the words "speaks" or "speaking" in several different and/or ambiguous ways, some of which are mutually contradictory. The essence of what these authors advocate is that God "speaks" in inaudible voice via means of inner impressions and/or subjective feelings. This is essential to remember, especially as the authors list various ways in which God "speaks" in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. They give summary lists of these 24 Old Testament and 16 New Testament ways (p. 31-32, 38). What is most significant about these lists is what is conspicuously absent. There is no mention of any Scriptural account in which God "spoke" via an inner impression. In other words, what the authors advocate, throughout their entire book, is not found anywhere in the Bible. If the authors' lists are exhaustive (as apparently they attempted to make them), then, ironically, they have proven that their meaning of God "speaking" is completely unbiblical.

In concluding their section on how God "speaks" in the Old Testament, they give a category heading of "various unspecified ways", and list eight quotations, followed by these questions: "Were these instances referring to an audible voice? Were they dreams? Were they visions?" A careful study of these Bible verses clearly indicates that the answer to their first question is "yes", while the answer to the other two questions is "no". They further claim, "We are not told specifically how God spoke, ..." However, the direct inference is that God spoke in an audible voice, using a known language. God never spoke in an inaudible voice.

Personal feelings and inner impressions certainly are a part of each person's life, but they do NOT constitute communication from God to individual people.

There is no need to comment on anything from chapters 3-12. There is no legitimate foundation for the teachings which these authors advocate. Consequently, everything which follows is invalid. Yes, these authors are sincere in what they advocate, but they are sincerely wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent treatment on hearing God's voice.......2005-05-13

This book has been so helpful to me and to many of my friends. Henry and Richard Blackaby have done a marvelous job of describing how God speaks in the O.T. and how He speaks in the N.T. through His Word, through the Holy Spirit, through other people, and circumstances. They intersperse helpful anecdotes, conversion stories and personal illustrations from their lives throughout the book as well.

To me, the most helpful chapters were the ones dealing with how the Holy Spirit works and speaks, how to meditate on God's Word and how God speaks through His Word, how to respond to God's voice, and the helpful questions and answers.

5 out of 5 stars I learned so much from this book.......2005-05-02

Henry and Richard present a very Scriptural, balanced approach to this subject. This book helps us develop the kind of relationship with God where we know, recognize, and respond to His voice. While it's not some mystical, super-spiritual stuff, it does take time as we develop that kind of walk with God.

Whether you don't feel you know God at all, or just want to know Him better, this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2003-02-07

I thought that this book was worth buying, I got a lot out of it. This book is about having a better relationship with God by learning to hear his voice, finding and following His will. It's a good book for new Christians and mature ones. They also ask the question if God talks to people today and if God has a will for every Christian's life, they present both arguments and give you their take, which I agree and that is that yes God has a will for your life. It talks about how to tell if something is from God or the devil. It also covers how God used to talk to people in the past as well as the present. I found the book easy to read, informative and helpful. I really think that the authors covered a lot of stuff and that they did their research.

Book Description

Surprised by the Voice of God takes you to the Bible to discover the variety of creative, deeply personal ways God still communicates with us today. You'll learn how God speaks with people apart from the Bible, though never in contradiction to it. Jack Deere first describes the ways God revealed his thoughts to first-century Christians. Then he tells why God continues to speak to us using the same methods. Finally Deere tells how accurately God speaks through prophecies, dreams, visions, and other forms of divine communication. With candor, sensitivity, and a profound understanding of Scripture, Deere identifies our hindrances to hearing the Holy Spirit and calls us beyond them to a more intimate relationship with God. Filled with fascinating stories and personal accounts, Surprised by the Voice of God is for all who want to walk in the dynamic scope of Christianity.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading!.......2007-07-22

Insipiring! Easy to read! Loved every word! If you are a fan of the Holy Spirit, YOU will love this book on how to hear the voice of God in today's hectic (loud!) world. I passed the book on and, for all I know, it's already been around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Answer to "a Reader" who cries "Perversion".......2007-05-30

To be a fair person one should act fairly. Calling a book a "perversion" and citing an article from an antagonistic source is only half the story. It would be objective to cite the answer to that antagonistic source and let the reader who chooses to "check it out" to make up his own mind. Such is the case at hand. The antagonstic source is a paper published by a group strongly opposed to Jack Deere. Mr. Deere answered the claims of that article at this source. www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/5951/PP2.html

It may be that "a reader" did not know of the above source...or, since he searched enough to find one type of article--he just agrees with it. Either way it is still not a "balanced" review.

Check it out and you will see that the small section of quotes listed in the "review" are very misleading.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in knowing how God speaks to us.

4 out of 5 stars Why Do I Dream?.......2006-11-06

Since I had had a dream in the Army Chemical Corps school in 1977 on Thanksgiving about some sort of Chemical weapons attack on my former neighborhood, I had been intrigued by my dreams. I know that in taking "Psychology 101" in college I had even bought a book about dreams by Elizabeth Loftus which the professor recommended but never read it. I had another one that had predicted my temporarily dropping out of grad school in 1984 due to an impossible schedule-and it happened like that. But in the APG dream, I am reminded of my studies of Daniel the Prophet and how Daniel was an advisor to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, while Daniel had prophetic dreams about the rise and fall of the great powers-as Babylon was a great power or world empire in that day!
I had been having dreams about the Black Horse of Famine from Revelation 6-the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse chapter. Apparently America's economic ruin or famine is a judgment from God for our sins and cruelty! I live in the "Rust Belt" of America!
Jack Deere was a Hebrew Professor at Dallas Theological Seminary. But he turned Pentecostal and left that organzation. So, I am influenced both my Dallas Seminary authors as well as the Charismatic teachings as well.
One "prophecy" given to a lttle girl intrigued me. Why did God send a prophet to tell a little girl that her parents' marital problems were not her fault when I had gone through an even more hellish existance as a child in a divided home and all I got from the Catholic church was insults like calling little old Mensa me "stupid fool" or crazy fool" in class. Not to mention my cruel sadistic Nazi of a father who harshly tried to dominate and terrify me. So, I really don't get it? And they do not even like me to attend church. And all I get from most media ministers is hate when I bring my problems up to them.
I know that the song "live Like You Were Dying" had inspired me to take a chance at reviving my ambitions in photography when I have three chronic illnesses. Jack had said that God can speak to us even in a secular song.
I have also looked at booklets by Kenneth E. Hagin trying to make sense of my spiritual dreams. Maybe there needs to be more good Christian books on this subject-and not the New Age type.
Yes, God does speak to us through dreams. I know that the dream I had in 1988 of a flaming passenger jet crashing into downtown Toledo where I live did seem to make sense on the day of 9/11. I did report this for the local FAA becuase I wanted to know if I was living in a dangerous area that passenger jets flew over.
I noticed from personal experience with my dreams that when something happens, it is like in the Bible Codes where something that my dream seems to predict happens, I know its from God. Drosnin finds the codes to show that the event was predicted 3500 years ago, but now we are just discovering it written or hidden in the Bible.
Some limitations are like when I had dreamt that I was going to become a personal assistant to Sadaam Hussein at a time when people were persecuting me. Obviously, that is not going to happen since they just hung him. And there was nothing I could do to actually get ahold of Sadaam after I had that dream. Another time when I was a sky watcher, I had seen possibly a vision of a cloud that was shaped like the island of Cuba around 1994. And like Constantine of Rome seeinng a vision of the Cross in a cloud in the sky telling him to go to war in the name of the cross, and he won the war. I thought maybe Jesus was telling me to flee persecution to Cuba. And when they did send me a visa application and I filled it out and mailed it to them, I heard nothing. And further they sent me a threatening issue of GRAMNA showing a frightening picture and article about labotomies! So, I guess that "guidance" about the island of Cuba in a cloud in the sky was not true guidance from God.So, we must watch what we "step out in faith" to do based on our dreams and visions.

5 out of 5 stars Listen More; Talk Less (2 Ears/1Mouth). On-point scholarly must reading .......2006-07-10

Dr. Deere's wisdom, warm and digestable scholarship and transparency all packaged up in a neat Zondervan book/bundle for a song via Amazon.com; get a copy ASAP and go on a private retreat to get back to 1st century Christian Basics 101: hearing God speak NOW 24/7 as your Coach, Guide, and Mentor. Can't stop reading and rereading this awesome how-to practical guide on escaping "yellowed pages" of Bible theory to reliving the book of Acts in the now. Pastor/professor Deere's been on both sides; former prof at fundamentalist/cessationalist Dallas Seminary; now living/experiencing the supernatural presence and power of An Awesome God who won't be boxed up into private quiet times and 2-3 hours on week-ends.

Deere's greatness is his balance; savvy scholarship emphasizing authority of Scripture but warm application showing you how experience/know God as The Coach who directs his kids in the game of life by a myriad of methods formerly viewed as the exclusive property of 1st Century (book of Acts) Christianity.

Jack gives you all the stuff you need to activate; coupled with hints, tips, warnings, dangers and pitfalls; shows how to be winsome and positive and come off not looking wild, weird, strange, and armed/dangerous to any local church fellowship.

After you get it down pat enough to move on; see also his sequels also available here at Amazon: "Surprised...By the Power of The Spirit," and "The Beginner's Guide To The Gift Of Prophecy."

Jack is pointing the direction and leading the way all Christianity needs to move; back to a balanced supernatural lifestyle of experiencing the power and presence of an infinite God who wants to share His ability, power, and wisdom with people far more that most of us would ever believe possible in the post-modern age of hi-tech secularization and separation of the divine from daily experiences outside the church walls.

It typically takes me a month to read a book. I'm just not much of a reader. But when I opened up "Wavelength" I literally could not put it down. I started reading it early one morning and finished 140 pages that first day. I even called my husband at work to let him know how I was devouring this book! It's an easy read yet gives profound insight into how to hear God's voice - a must-read no matter where you're at on your spiritual journey!

5 out of 5 stars Do you want to experience God?.......2007-09-28

This book is incredible. I took a course using Blackaby's book on Experiencing God and the Lord used it in such a loving way to draw me closer to Him that I took it twice. This book is just like that. What an amazing Lord we have. I would also recommend Calvary Road, He Chose the Cross, On The Anvil, or anything by Beth Moore.

2 out of 5 stars Biblically Sound?.......2007-08-14

I appreciate the author's desire to bring readers closer to God and I don't for a moment wish to challenge her faith in Christ, but the premise of her book is theologically questionable.

For example, Samuel wasn't even a believer when God spoke to him, so why is he a model for how Christians can learn to hear God's voice? (Indeed, the Biblical text specifically says Samuel "did not yet know God" in 3:7.) More to the point, where is it ever taught in Scripture that 1) it's normative for Christians to get subjective, personal messages from God, or 2) that we need to cultivate a discipline of hearing God's voice outside of Scripture itself?

Here's a question: Does God try? That is, should we assume he is trying to speak to us but can't get through because we aren't spiritually in tune enough to hear Him?

If God has to try at anything, He's not sovereign. And if he's speaking, but making it difficult for us to hear, He's cruel. No, when God wants to communicate personally to humans--believers or non-believers--He does so in unmistakably clear terms. No guesswork involved. Thus, no need to develop an ability to hear His voice.

One more problem. If we truly think God is speaking to us through various "promptings" and "leadings," it follows these alleged words from God are on par with Scripture and carry the same authority. After all, God's word is God's word, right?

The Bible has 66 books with marching orders for Christians. I suspect most of us have not yet fulfilled those orders. Given that, why are we always looking for more revelation?

Instead of looking for the latest "word," why not study the one we already have? It's tough work, but pays a much higher dividend.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent motivational Bible study!.......2007-08-14

Though I have not yet finished this book, what I have read is amazing! It is inspirational, motivational, and will give you the "push" that you need to fully give your life to God and see the awesome places and things He has planned for you!! I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent study.......2007-07-25

I just finished reading He Speaks to Me by Priscilla Shirer and it was wonderful! If you like Beth Moore, you will definitely like Ms. Shirer. Some books that I read like this often fizzle out towards the end and pack less punch, but this one only got better. I think I underlined half the book! I felt encouraged, comforted and convicted all at the same time and I very much look forward to applying this practical principles to my life. They are not new principles, but her directness and clarity really made it so real to me. I can also relate to her as she is a mom of young children as well! It is based on 1 Samuel 3. Very worth the read!

5 out of 5 stars good group book.......2007-03-23

A group of women related only by neighborhood (not church affiliation or denomination, nor maturity in faith) are doing this study. It is a challenge for sure, but worth recommending!

The study focuses on why young Samuel heard the voice of God, and how we (particularly women) can be more directed and transformed by Him. The author is not afraid to get to your heart and ask tough questions.
Note: "hearing from God" is not charasmatic in this book, but it pushes the reader to dig into the word of God for true understanding and transformation. The "homework" questions are open-ended, rather than fill in the blank, but very manageable to do for a weekly study.

Hot public topics (wives submitting to husbands, homosexuality, legalism, and more) are in this study. This might present a challenge in group discussions, but don't shy away from it! Take the lead from the author and concentrate on your own heart, rather than the failings of anyone else, and you'll find true value in this book.

Our group has grown (in numbers, faith, and relationship with each other) during the course of this study.

5 out of 5 stars Best Study on Prayer.......2006-11-10

Priscilla does a fantastic job on explaining why our prayers may go unanswered. Learning how to open your heart to the Lord and let Him work in and through you is so vitally important. There is also a Bible study workbook to go along with this book. The ladies of our church are just finishing up this study and have enjoyed it. I would recomend this to anyone who wants to get serious about their prayer life and worship of the Lord.

Product Description

This practical guide to hearing God's voice shows how an ordinary man who committed to hearing God and obeying Him, became the founder of the largest inter-denominational missions organization in the world.

Loren Cunningham's dream began with a vision -- waves of young people moving out across the continents announcing the Good News of Jesus Christ to the whole earth. Decades later, Loren's vision has grown into an interdenominational movement of Christians from around the world who are dedicated to presenting the Gospel to this generation.

How did God move Loren's dream from vision to reality? He led Loren and his wife, Darlene, through a series of tough lessons in guidance. The exciting story of Youth With A Mission has much to teach us about the art of listening to God as we seek to be used by Him. Is That Really You, God? is not only a practical guide to hearing God's voice but also an amazing testimony to how following His direction can impact our lives and our world for the glory of God's kingdom.

5 out of 5 stars Learn to hear the voice of the Lord.......2007-07-03

This book was simply wonderful, so much so that I read it from cover to cover in just one day, but the lessons I learned from it are sure to last a lifetime. Like Mr. Cunningham, I too have been able to hear the voice of the Lord quite often. Though other Christians around me have told me that it is quite an "uncommon" gift. But once I began to read Mr. Cunningham's book, I realized that it's NOT uncommon, or at least it should not be! And Mr. Cunningham's tales of the amazing things that can happen when one follows the voice of the Lord are not only exciting and awe-inspiring, but humbling. I have become quite inspired by Mr. Cunningham and hope that the Lord may teach me to be as patient, as open (to listening), and as faithful as Loren and his companions. Also given in the back of this book are twelve steps to hearing the Lord. Several of these steps I have been using before I ever read this book (and can attest that they work!), but there are some that I was not aware of until now, and am quite happy to put them to daily use. If you think you are hearing the voice of the Lord, definitely pick up this book. You will thank me (and Loren) for it!

5 out of 5 stars A Guide Worth Following.......2003-06-10

This is easy to read narrative story will hold the reader's attention well. The author shares stories of situations in which he successfully discerned the "voice of God" and other times when he failed. He examines both his successes and failures and brings the reader to an understanding of the principles by which each one of us can learn to listen to "God's voice" for personal direction. That fact that he shares his failures with the reader lends even greater credibility to his successes. This is the first book I've read by L. Cunningham, but not the last. I recommend the book to anyone who is honestly seeking God's direction in his or her lives. It doesn't give pat answers and formulas, but it does offer biblical principles that have been tested by others throughout the centuries and today, as Cunningham attests to in the book. The guidance of God will take you closer to the heart of God.

5 out of 5 stars a modern classic.......2000-08-04

This book show what might happend when you let God take controll in your life. A bok about a modern pioner and hero Loren Cunningham.

5 out of 5 stars It has impacted my life so much!.......1999-11-03

In fact I have the urge to read it over and over again that it becomes an important guide in my walk with God--not to make it like the Bible, but the message of the book itself is a revelation to me. Thanks Loren and Jannie.

5 out of 5 stars This changed my prayer life!.......1999-06-13

I've read this book many, many times. This last time I was seeking an answer from God and wondering if what I was hearing was really the voice of the Lord. I learned to seek the Lord not the answer, to focus on God not just the tools He uses in our lives. I learned some steps to be really open to hearing God's voice.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful Advice From Someone With Credibility.......2006-01-23

Joyce Meyer has overcome a lot in her life and her teachings are intended to help you get ahead in your own struggles. In this book she points out the myriad ways God speaks to His people. Keep in mind, Jesus said His sheep will hear His voice, so this is a scriptural principle. In the introduction she lays out some of the diverse ways one can expect to hear: His Word, nature, people, circumstances, peace, wisdom, supernatural intervention, dreams, visions, and the "inner witness." All these are mentioned in the scriptures. Throughout the book she explains.

This is not a book intended only for acquiring new information. It's a book for application of principles. There are reflective questions that help you to see how to tap into the lessons being taught. This book will help you grow spiritually.

Personal responsibility is an integral part of hearing from God. Meyer points out that Jesus told us to be careful how we hear, i.e., not just receive information by default, but be consciously in control of what we allow to influence us. All the ways of God are right and sure, and in hearing from Him, we learn the route He has for our lives. Listening is an active part of prayer.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Lessons, but more funny then heart wrenching.......2005-01-02

I really wanted to hear from God after reading this book. Like most joyce myer books, they dont change my life, but they give me an up front view of what I have to do - in order to please God and fix the problem. Great examples from the bible and stories but no direct instructions a young person (19) like myself wanted. I can truly say she never writes a boring book but this one didnt do anything for me personally.
