Who says you have to READ the Bible? This auditory rendition is so amazing- putting emphasis where it should be, pulling passages together- you feel like you are THERE! The different voices and background sounds just bring everything to life while you listen to a verbatum "acted out" reading of the NIV NT.
I downloaded it onto my ipod and listen to it while I work and I carry the cd's in the car. This is so amazing, I recommend it to EVERYONE- just as everyone should have a Bible, everyone should have this as well! I cannot say enough. Dramatic reading is enthralling, keeps me focused.......2007-07-19

Max McLean reads the Bible like it really means something to him, as if he has almost memorized it. (And, in fact, the man stands up in front of audience all over the country and quotes, word for word, from whole chapters of the Bible. I have watched in amazement as he has recited from Mark and Acts, and he is completely on with his recitation! Both times I was in the audience he received standing ovations.) I use the CD set with my daily Bible reading every day and feel it helps keep me on track with those passages that can sometimes feel long and boring. But Max reads Leviticus 18 as he does John 3, as he never lets up and treats every verse as if one's salvation rested on it. He even gets into the hard-to-pronounce names, and while I'm not always sure if his pronounciation is correct, it sure sounds correct. There are some instances where Max misses a word or adds in one of his own--perhaps somebody should have really been listening along with him in the studio and then edited these small errors--but they really are far and few between, and they never change the meaning of the passage. In fact, I could never come close to his incredible accuracy. Overall, this is a big thumbs up for what ought to be considered a spiritual investment.

Max McLean's audio bible is a masterpiece. McLean's delivery is lucid, powerful, and skillfully engaging. I listen to this Bible daily. Mclean gives you "the story" or the panoramic view of the scripture. The NIV translation lends itself more to a fluid listening of the scripture. McLean certainly communicates with conviction the inherent authority of God's word. He brings the scripture to life, putting you into the time period in which it was written. Purchased this product along with Scourby's KJV through Amazon and it is a timeless investment.

A Great way to "Read" the Bible by hearing it!.......2007-03-13

I have truly been blessed by this item. It has allowed me to listen to the Bible when I don't have the time to actually sit down and read it. I highly recommend this item to anyone wanting to get to really know God and the word of the Lord. Max McLean is and English trained actor and unless you like hearing an Englishman talk you may not like it, but of course, that is why he was called into service for the Lord.

Max McLean has the most beautiful, soothing voice I have heard on any audio recording. His delivery of the Bible texts is superb. I purchased both McLean's "The Listener's Bible" and "The Valley of Vision" recordings for my husband as a Christmas gift, and he has enjoyed immensely his daily commute of two hours ever since.

One reviewer mentioned attempting to read along as Mr. McLean delivered the beautiful biblical verses and having difficulty with the theatricality of Mr. McLean's voice. I disagree that his voice is theatrical; I do find it dramatic and moving and precisely how I would expect to hear the Word of the Lord - dramatic enough to know who is speaking but lovingly delivered.

As a teacher, I would suggest a method which might help persons reading the Bible and having difficulty with older, non-modern versions of any text. As with other fine literature, the modern, untrained reader must develop a knack for reading and understanding older literature and other texts correctly over time. One way is by hearing it again and again before attempting to decipher it in print.
In other words, listen to develop a familiarity with how the text would have been spoken, the inflections of voice, and the emphasis on certain words in order to "translate" concepts into modern terms. Then when one sits down to read the written word, it becomes much more clear and revealing. (Try this with Homer or Shakespeare as well.)

The best way I have found to fully appreciate Max McLean's narrative talent and the soul-soothing balm of the Bible is to close the drapes, lie back, exclude as many outside sounds as possible and devote an hour or more solely to LISTENING. Allow McLean's lovely voice to read to you. Just ENJOY it!

Then, if you can force yourself to stop the CD ("only ONE more chapter..."), go about your work or play. Later on or the next day, open your Bible and read what he read to you. It is amazing how more vivid the text will have become to you. I think this method will help much more than trying to read along. Sometimes our limited knowledge of words and their older meanings, our lack of proper inflection, and our unfamiliarity with the subject, history, or traditions and customs causes us to stumble over words and passages and to totally miss the concepts we might understand if we were not attempting to keep up with a reader. This is akin to "listening" to what another person is saying while, at the same time, thinking of some rebuttal or formulating a counter-speech in our heads. Listening is a wonderful skill.

My husband came home last night in a joyful mood, because in spite of his hectic day at work, rude drivers and heavy traffic on the highway, he had listened all the way home to the lovely, encouraging voice of God lovingly narrated by Max McLean.

If you purchase this item (and I also suggest "The Valley of Vision" -both the book and McLean's reading of it), you will most certainly benefit. Your listening skills will improve (might help at home and work, too), your appreciation for the Word of God also will be markedly changed, and the next time you read to someone, maybe McLean's dramatic and enthusiastic influence will spill over to your own reading.

This is a great bible to get to more easily understand what your reading.
The 2 versions also make it easy to compare against each other and give you another version side by side to read. We are in a small lifegroup that meets once a week and its very helpful for what we are studying and refer to.

T Bauer suggested doing a comparative reading of Psalm 63 in order to see the "danger" of the Message Bible. I took him up on the challenge and would encourage others to do the same. I read Psalm 63 in the KJV, ESV, NIV, and Message. Each of the "translations" was slightly different, but held true to the text. To be honest, the Message was the worst. It remained true to the text, although a couple of the interpretations were fairly loose. However, I need to point out that the Message is a "paraphrase," not a word-for-word or even thought for thought translation. Also, as others have pointed out, the Message Bible's weakness appears to be in its rendering of the Psalms, which are much more poetic.

We must remember that Jesus said that when he left, he would send the Comforter, who would guide us into ALL truth. No matter which Bible we use, it is the Spirit that brings the Word to life and uses it to perform spiritual surgery on our hearts. In fact, he rebuked the religious leaders who studied the scripture, thinking that in them they would find eternal life. The Bible, no matter what version you use, simply points you to the life giver. We must not become so smug as to think that having the "most accurate" translation (whichever one that might be), somehow increases our spiritual stature even one iota. I remember when I was so arrogant as to think that if it wasn't the KJV, then you weren't really reading the Bible--until I realized that the KJV was only a translation itself.

So, having said all of that, I have no problem with the Message Bible, because I have an unswerving trust in the promised Holy Spirit to teach me what I need to know. As someone said once, "the best version of the Bible is the one that you will read."

Lastly, I will say that this Bible is a parallel Bible. The text of the NIV and the Message are laid out side-by-side so that a reader can do an easy comparison. This method is a valuable aide to Bible study. I would defintely recommend this Bible both as your primary study Bible (since it contains an actual translation) or as a study aid to add to your library.

This book offers a very convenient way to compare the NIV with The Message which is written in modern English and is not in verse form, because the two versions appear side by side. I like to check the new King James version, too, if I'm really trying to determine meanings and am puzzled, but the two in this book often give me a better understanding of what is being taught.

As an older student of Greek and only recently feeling at ease with the Greek New Testament I am finding this book very useful. I do agree with those who say that the large Liddell and Scott (LSJ) is also very useful. My study so far has been in ancient Greek generally (from Homer to Koine) and I have used LSJ (and the abridged editions) extensively; it a good tool to give New Testament readers a wider view of particular meanings.

So if you can afford it I say buy Danker and LSJ, and if you don't know your Greek accents, get a good book on that too (such as the one by Probert).

This is indispensable. Proper Greek study and exegesis CANNOT be done without this resource. The down side? A bit pricy. But it more than pays for itself. WARNING: Pick up the most recent edition (the third, I believe); the changes are staggering and affect meaning.

For much less than the price of this lexicon, one can purchase a copy of Thayer's, AND Trenchard's vocabulary guide AND a Greek concordance. Academic snobs make a big deal about how Thayer's lexicon is out of date because he did not have access to the papyri, but for 99% of New Testament words and meanings this is not an issue. Trenchard's book is actually MORE helpful, in my opinion, than this or any lexicon because he simply lists every possible meaning of each word. One way to get to the essence of a word's meaning is to look at the cognates, and Trenchard lists them all. A Greek concordance will actually print all the NT uses of a word in Greek. Bauer's lexicon is just not that helpful and is too wordy.

I ordered this bible as a gift to Soldiers for our Thanksgiving Prayer Breakfast. I know that the Soldiers will enjoy this free gift! Not something I normally have........2007-08-21

I first got one of these when I was in Iraq in 2005 and the one I recently purchased is a replacement. The original got lost.

There are times when it is nice to have a copy of the Bible around and this version of it is specially-designed for the Soldier. This is a good item to get a Soldier deploying overseas as it isn't always the first thing they think of when heading out.

I plan to keep this one for many years to come.

Research indicates that soldiers weren't accepted as members of the early christian churches until near the end of the second century. So in other words while the apostles and their followers were alive, guess what? No G.I. Joes in the churches. They actually took the "turn the other cheek" thing seriously back then for some reason. Silly of them huh?

I pray everyone involved in war reads this book, especially the lines in red, and realizes that warfare brings only deep sin, immorality, unchained lust, injustice, oppression, and eternal and infinite distancing from the God of Love and of Peace whom we find through the blessed word of Jesus Christ.

I pray each soldier reads this book and weeps, and beats his arms into plowshares, to build peace and feed the children instead of slaughtering them and leaving them orphan, maimed. Saint James the greater writes that religion pure and simple is caring for widows and orphans in their distress, not creating widows and orphans and their distress.

I pray every soldier may read this Good Book and take it to heart and change their ways and study war no more.

A great tool to saturate your mind in God's Word.......2007-10-05

I bought this to listen on my ipod. It's one of the best thing I did to help my mind to be more saturated with and to meditate on the Word. With ESV as the most accurate and readable translation, Max McLean's calm and not so dramatic reading helps the listener to focus on the content rather than on the reading itself. Its background ambiance track is faint yet appropriately present that adds to the weight of the passages. For those who have not tried audio Bible, I highly recommend it as it is how most of the original audience of the Scripture heard, through oral reading.

The Best Whole Bible On Audio CD I Know Of.......2007-10-03

This was a gift to me by a member in my congregation. Previously they had given me the NT as well. I've already started using this product daily. At the time of this review, Amazon's price was almost $14 lower than the discount Christian book sites I checked. So this is a great place to buy this item.

First let me say that the CD packaging is solid. Leather case, with easy access sleeves that are durable.

Second, the version that is read here is the finest available in English in my opinion. I came to this conclusion after carefully comparing it to the Greek New Testament for about a year, my own translation work from sermons last year, and about 7 other English translations (including the NIV, NLT, NAS, NKJV, KJV. The ESV maintains a tight mirror image to the original text, yet it sounds like a pleasant English. For more on this, you may wish to read my review on the ESV Outreach Bible here on Amazon.
If you have access to them, ask any Greek scholar about the ESV and I think you will find they give it extremely high marks. So I prefer this audio bible mainly because it is the ESV. On to less important details...

The CD labels and finishing quality are fine. No problems.

A few CD's had data read problems with feeding the track labels to Windows Media Player. One cd I was able to get it to load onto itunes, and then it worked on Windows Media Player after I loaded it onto itunes. On another cd that didn't work, so I had to type in the track titles manually. I was unable to get five of the 62 cds to load the info labels on the tracks. The actual tracks played just fine. I don't know if it was from my software, my cd drive or the product.

Otherwise, the product is flawless. A light touch of music in the background is not irritating and is soothing/meditative. The Max McLean speaks at a 'walking pace' throughout, which I find very pleasant.

I saved this onto my Windows media player, and then whatever passage I am preaching on that week I simply load onto my MP3 device so I have the scripture right there. I highly recommend this product.

Other ways this product can be used include listening while working out (I find the music background helps a bit). Also, it is good for a family devotional primer or even for use in a congregational setting. I often use it in a leaders meeting or in a small group meeting.

How to make your iPod holy........2007-09-08

Yes you can now fit the entire Bible on a 4GB iPod if you happen to get this wonderfully presented CD set from Max McLean and it is worth every penny. The total file size is actually 2.01 GB (2,165,853,978 bytes). The files do need some tinkering (some batch file renaming is necessary) to get everything in order for the iPod (or whatever MP3 player) so that it runs from start to finish through every chapter break properly but in the end you will be able to listen to the entire Bible in the space of a few weeks (as opposed to hourly reading daily on a year bible reading plan) if you put your mind to it. This is also a great way to refresh oneself after reading a book of the bible or for casual listening. Max McLean has the best voice for it to date too (as if he is introducing or narrating a movie like the Ten Commandments or Jesus of Nazareth). If you are going to get an audio Bible this is the one to get.

Who said that one book can't contain all information about Photoshop CS2? That person just never had "Photoshop CS2 Bible" by Wiley Publishing.

This book is really amazing. But, please, don't die down when you see this book. Yes, it's big, yes it's thick, but it has everything, absolutely everything that you wanted, want or would love to know about Photoshop CS2.

Take a look at content and you will see everything that waits you ahead in this book. But, again, please, don't get heart attack and just remember - don't cry out before you heart. It contains a lot of information, but this book will really help you in any way that you can imagine.

I work with Photoshop from 4th version (and Photoshop CS2 is 9th) and even i discovered new things from this book. It's very hard to describe all interesting things that you will find in this book, but i will give it a shot. In couple of words you will get acquaintance with painting & brushes, filling & stroking, selections, masks, filters, corrective filters, masking, extractions and much, much, much more.

If you intend to get close with Photoshop, then my advice to you is to keep you copy of "Photoshop CS2 Bible" always near you computer. For a couple of weeks i was intensively worked in Photoshop and every time i needed to remember smth of find information quick - this book never let me down. And it will not let you down.

From this book you will take only the newest and most up-to-date information, that was very carefully organized is topic chapters, on pages you will also find very useful print screens and clear explanation of every subject.

Let's also face the fact that not all people who read that sort of a books are real English-speaking people, so people who are not native English will be also surprised how easy they can read and understand information in it. This book is wrote with very simple language and is apprehensible for absolutely everybody.

Also some very small but helpful pull-quotes are presented for your attention as cautions, notes, tip, cross-references and, of cause, new features. In last one explains an options, commands, that is new or have differences from previous version of program. This book also contains 32 pages of full-color examples that highlights the most important moments that you will use in your work.

I know that many Photoshop users are trying to avoid such features as brushes, because from first glance they seems very complicated, but just read Part II: Chapter 5 and you will see that there is nothing complicated. All you need is just a bit of practice and improvisation- because brushes can be used for much more than simply painting with brush tool and can be absolute godsend in your everyday image-editing tasks.

Remember, different pictures call for different solutions, so just take this amazing book (or buy it), take a deep breath and go ahead - you will be wondered how simple and easy it really is, just a bit a patience and you can do everything you want or dreamed about. Enjoy!

It depends on what you're looking for?.......2007-06-19

If your goal in buying this book is to learn about every tool, button and procedure in Photoshop, then this 1000+ page book will do a fine job of that for you. If on the other hand you are looking for a book that will get you engrossed and inspired by doing fun creative projects that are unique to Photoshop, then I wouldn't even consider this book.

Despite of what the authors say, I was really disappointed that they didn't include a CD or a download site of the illustrations and examples they used in the book. It would have made it much easier to follow along and try doing the things they were suggesting. One case in point, when they they described how to use the Red-Eye tool, I couldn't find a picture with red-eye in my collection, so I just had to take their word on how it worked and move on.

The Appendix of keyboard shortcuts is the most complete you'll probably see anywhere. One small point, if they were to put in bold print the key stroke commands throughout the book, it would make it much easier to follow and do them as you move through the book. It would also make it much easier to find again when you refer back to them at a later date.

In conclusion, I'm really glad I went through this book; it filled in a lot of the details that I had missed from the first three books I've studied on Photoshop and also up-dated me on a late version of the program. I'm sure it will serve as a good reference point for when I have technical questions in the future. That said, I'm really glad it wasn't my first book on Photoshop or I might have come to see the program as being a bit of a tedious endeavor because of it's almost total lack of real-time projects.

I finally bought a digital camera a few years back. Then I finally used it on a recent vacation. I picked up photoshop to fix some photos as a practical joke on a friend (expensive purchase, yes, but we take our practical joking quite seriously). This book was very helpful and it's easy to find what you're looking for when you need it, a characteristic all too often absent from computer manuals. It is extremely frustrating spending twenty minutes looking for something that needs to be down commonly enough that you should be able to find it within a minute. This book enables you to do so.

This is a great tool for studying the bible. My only complaint is that the Hebrew text is hard to read because it is small and a bit blurry. This book is the first full interlinear bible that I have seen. It has a pronunciation guide and other grammatical helps in the beginning. It is very good for looking up passages and getting the word for word in the original language. I'm sure it will help me in my study of God's holy and inspired word.

Because I know only a few Hebrew words, this particular format is helpful, as it points me to the Hebrew word I want to look up in my theological dictionaries. When pastors indicate the use of a particular Hebrew word in the text, I like to verify that it actually appears which is more difficult in my KOHLENBERGER because of my incomplete vocabulary. Often times the word is there, but in a different format, so the Green Interlinear is helpful and time saving.

The challenge is...how hungry are you for the Word? Reading the Hebrew Old Testament is nothing short of hard-core...especially for someone who doesn't know Hebrew....thankfully the English version is right beneath the Hebrew lexicon....this bible brings about a totally new appreciation for the Word of God and those that recorded it! Not for the faint of heart, or those needing 'large print'...but a definite must have for the seriously seeking!

I have been a student of the Biblical texts since 2002, having poured through the KJV, MKJV, NLT, NIV and a few others, and I can say this version is superior to any of those, or anything else readily available from retail book stores. I do enjoy the MKJV, as this to me is the next best thing. However, how can you compare having the exact Hebrew and Greek texts right in front of you? This is the problem of modern translations, including the "KJV 1611 AV", which I think is an acceptable copy, but it is not perfect. Why try to imitate the original Old English (which is actually about unreadable being early 17th century English)? It is a form of a transliteration. I have read a Nelson Reprint (an exact copy of the original 1611 Bible), and it is quite different from the modern "KJV 1611 AV".

I am more interested in *exactly* what God said (as is Mr. Green), word for word, than a close translation. So this version is pure gold to me!

Altho the print is small, it has to be to be so complete, it is the perfect book for the person who wants every Hebrew and Greek word in one volume and keyed to the Strong's Concordance! This is an excellent and highly detailed reference for the program 3ds Max 9. As near as I can tell it mentioned every button and command that 3ds Max has available. My main criticism is that it is highly under-illustrated. While every function and button is mentioned, as a beginner to 3ds Max, I found that I often could not find the command being referred to in the text, whereas a screen shot would have quickly, and clearly shown what I should look for. In addition, since 3ds Max is such a sophisticated and detailed program which is great, it is often not readily apparent how all the various settings and parameters that can be entered for a given effect should be used. This book mentions most, if not all of the parameters, but examples as to how they are used in an actual project would have been good. There are short tutorials on the main features of the program, but these are generally restricted to singe effects. This book is probably for a more advanced user who is familiar with all the commands and knows how to use them to create a 3d scene, but would like a more detailed explanation of various functions in 3ds Max. Definitely well written though, and the DVD with the material and software described in the examples is great.

This is a good book, Wiley Publishing messed things up though. It is missing over a 100 pages. As soon as I got it I searched for the chapters on MaxScript and detected the omission. The book itself is great; but the publishers omission is not acceptable. I have informed Amazon about this and hopefully they will recover the missing chapters. The DVD does have a complete version of the book which is very helpful in the interim.

for gladiators in the Spirit only! this message is good news, indeed! i used to think i was so smart, reading the king james--in all it's stately majesty. but i didn't really get it, i guess, that all those good things in the KJV were written for believers hundreds of years ago. and that's great, but what about believers today? the gospel is so simple--just believe!

if GOD does not receive honor from men, what a wonder that women and men leave '5 stars' to commend His good Word! (might as a well buy yourself a five star notebinder and write your own words, if they're worth so much.) so, i suppose it's a silly thing to say 'yay' or 'nay' to this translation...why not judge for yourself? anyway, i would have rated it 'all stars', but that's more or less self-evident, so i guess i'll go with five just to catch a glance or two.

remember that 'theophilus' means one who loves GOD...i know that many believers think Theophilus was a patron to Luke, but i think 'theophilus' was merely a code, a hidden greeting--to us! to those who believe, and who love GOD (...'i decided to write it all out for you, most honorable [GOD-lover]'...)! throughout all the ages...no patron saints for us!

if you love the Lord, why not send His love to the ones He loves? 'The Message' is a good report, and one that ought to be shared, not unto unwise, but to us, and those who believe, redeeming the time because the time is soooo short. i wish i had a boombox to blast this Message to anyone who would hear! and that's a good re-port (James 1:5-8)!

I love the Message version of the Bible, but in this edition the print is too small even for my teenagers. I understand the idea for keeping the volume small and cute for them to WANT to read it... but they are having problems with the print size. I really wish I had gotten them the full size version.

As a divinity student that has to study Greek and be able to look at all the possible translations that Koine A Greek can take, I am disturbed when reading this. I do not have a problem with using contemporary language in the Bible. The NRSV is a great translation for this. However, when meanings are implied that the Greek does not imply there is cause for concern. Koine A is a difficult language to translate because it can be translated so many different ways yet the Message diverges even from these many different ways to interpret and seems to be promoting its own agenda. A translation that is promoting its own agenda needs to be questioned. If one does decide to read the translation be careful because the discrepencies are blatant.

I never could really pick up the Bible (King James version) and read it without becoming very confused and bored. I picked up this book several months ago and could not put it down. I could easily understand what was being said and what was going on and I kept wanting to read more. It affected me in a way that any other version just couldn't cut it. It's great for teens and the younger generation who just can't wrap themselves around the scriptures the way they are written in other versions.

What's also good is that when you are actually being able to read through the Bible smoothly and without trying to sit and understand what exactly this or that sentence means, you want to pick up that KJV or NIV version and compare it to what this one says.

People are concerned that "The Message" takes away from the Bible's originality. Well, I disagree. The Bible has been written and re-written many, many times. It has been translated many times. There is nothing wrong with reading it in a "contemporary language" versus any other version that is out there. People should feel NO shame in reading the Bible in a way that they are comfortable with, in a way that speaks to them personally. People have different opinions and people understand things differently. Not everyone can say that they believe everything in the same way, 100%. I think that the older generations are so used to the way that they grew up with Christianity that it is just shameful if the younger generation does it any differently.

"The Message" helped me with my faith and really grasping Christianity and understanding what all of it means. If it wasn't for this book I would have never picked up the Bible, I would have stayed uninterested in learning anything about Christianity. I am sure that others can say the same thing. I highly recommend it! :)
