Morning and evening meditations to literally create your heart's desire.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Hmmmmmm..........2007-10-03

I bought this CD because I really wanted to learn how to quiet my mind and I figured learning an effective way to meditate would be a good way to do it. It turns out here's this audio-book that not only claims to teach you how to meditate, but to use the meditations to manifest what you desire in your life. Sounds like a good deal, right?...

Like other reviewers, I find the constant fluctuation in pitch in Dyer's own "ahs" and "ohms" irritating as well as the religious references (I am an atheist, however I do get that other people have other beliefs - when listening to the numerous god references here, I actively interpret 'god' as 'the universe', 'oneness' or 'myself' in an attempt to get something out of the material and at least give the meditations a try). My biggest beef with this recording is that, again, I wanted to learn how to meditate as a way to quiet my ever-racing mind and I find myself getting really annoyed at the part of the morning/'ah' meditation where Dyer says (paraphrased) "The problem with being able to manifest things through sound is the mind gets in the way..." and I'm thinking "Oh yes! FINALLY I'll get the answer to quieting the constant, cacophonous racket in my head and FINALLY learn how to focus" and then he says "...so what you need is a technique to help the mind to disappear. And as the mind begins to disappear you have access to this higher consciousness...", but then he says nothing further at all about how to make your mind disappear or where to go to find this 'mind-disappearing technique' that he refers to. He just drones on with the ahs and affirmations and I'm left trying to just use my own voice to drown out the wild and wandering thoughts that keep flying through my head while at the same time trying to force myself to focus on gaining 'peace of mind' - the thing I really want to "manifest" in the first place.

I've only been doing this for a week now and I'm trying my best to be optimistic and open and just stick with it and see if I get any results, but I already feel compelled to express my disappointment in what I'm seeing here as a half-hearted and even somewhat negligent approach to producing this material.

Note to Dr. Wayne Dyer: Don't suggest that the listener need a certain thing first in order for the whole rest of your program to work and then not provide that certain necessary thing or even mention how or where to get it. I even went to your website to see if you had any clues on how to 'make your mind disappear', but didn't find any such information - maybe it's in another one of your publications (in which case I'll never know).

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2007-09-25

I really enjoy this cd. I have been listening to it for a couple of weeks, in the morning and in the evening and it clears my mind, helps me focus, and gives me a feeling of connection and clarity. It is easy to follow along and I would recommend it to everyone.

1 out of 5 stars AWFUL! Hasn't this man made enough money yet?.......2007-09-25

The Wayne Dyer one man cottage industry in banal platitudes never rests it seems! Product after product careens onto the market featuring Mr. Dyer spewing unending streams of philosphical homilies cadged from a number of other sources, liberally intermixed with his own facile and patently absurd comments such as "you have created everything in your own life". Previous titles pale in comparison with this one; could have been sub-titled "Caterwauls with gusto".

5 out of 5 stars the practical and effective way to meditate .......2007-09-21

I have had some great success with this cd. This is a very effective way
to integrate meditation into your daily living. You see, my problem with meditation was doing it. This is a great way to give yourself a daily, finite program that helps to build the discipline involved to carry forward. I have the book too, and have gotten wonderful results from this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Meditation Tool .......2007-09-03

I have to say I love this CD! I would recommend it to anyone wanting to experiment with a different style of meditation or to deepen his or her existing meditation practice. Dr. Dyer guides the listener gently through a series of chanting and affirmations in the morning and chanting and contemplation in the evening. Unlike some reviewers here, I find his voice and the background music to be well-suited for this type of practice and have found working with the vibrations of the sound of my voice to be a real deepening experience over time.

I got this CD several years ago and did the meditations faithfully morning and night for a week. I started having very vivid dreams at night - not scary, but extremely rich and vivid. At that time I decided it was too much for me at that point in my practice, and cut back on using it as a daily meditation. However, since then I have experimented with different styles of meditation and have had periods where I've taken out this CD and used it for a few days or so at a time. I come back to it like an old friend.

The reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I am not a fan of Meher Baba and Dr. Dyer uses some of his sayings in the evening meditation. It is probably a cultural thing, but I just don't like or admire that guy. At first I found these sayings to be alternately silly, irritating, distracting, even infuriating. However, I've learned to use that time to practice gratitude and non-attachment while I'm chanting my "OM's", and usually have a very deep, rich meditation experience.

Classic Beth Moore! Beth Moore inspired me to write the Ancient Roots Translinear Bible (ARTB)! Ancient Roots Translinear Bible (ARTB) (Old Testament) Her love for finding out the real meaning of words in the ancient language prompted my project.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done!.......2007-05-07

I have absolutely loved this book! The book is beautiful in appearance, with David on the front, a convenient burgundy satin ribbon bookmark built in, and parchment pages, perfectly suit the wonderful content of this Bible study. It has been a great tool to use in my quiet time each morning. Each day's study is not too long, but just enough to ponder God's thoughts to me from His word and the life of David. There is also a scripture to pray each day, and room to journal. A great gift book too!

For those who already know Beth Moore, I don't need to push this book. For those of you who don't, well, you should buy this book. I made the decision to study God's Word daily, but some mornings I can't sit for 45 minutes. I am able to complete a lesson is about 20 minutes and I love them all. I come away with a better understanding of the Word and a deeper relationship with my God.

5 out of 5 stars Even better the second time around, in bit size pieces.......2006-12-28

I did the Beth bible study on this same subject a few years back, and I am not going through this devotional. It is a great reflective study, even the second time around. The daily devotions are in good bite size pieces making you hungry for more.

I recommend it for those also, who may struggle with completing all the homework in her full indepth Bible studies.

Good stuff, I am looking forward to all of them.

In undertaking a spiritual life, we must make certain that our path is connected with our heart, according to author and Buddhist monk Jack Kornfield. Since 1974 (long before it gained popularity in the 1990s), Kornfield has been teaching westerners how to integrate Eastern teaching into their daily lives. Through generous storytelling and unmitigated warmth, Kornfield offers this excellent guidebook on living with attentiveness, meditation, and full-tilt compassion.

Part of what makes this book so accessible is Kornfield's use of everyday metaphors to describe the elusive lessons of spiritual transformation. For example, he opens with "the one seat" lesson taught to him by his esteemed teacher. Literally it means sitting in the center of a room and not being swayed or moved by all the people and dramas happening around you. On a spiritual level it means sticking "with one practice and teacher among all of the possibilities," writes Kornfield; "inwardly it means having the determination to stick with that practice through whatever difficulties and doubts arise until you have come to true clarity and understanding." The same could be said for this "one book." Among all the spiritual self-help books, this is a classic worth sticking with and returning to--a highly approachable teacher that can only lead to greater clarity and understanding. --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!.......2007-09-03

This quickly became one of my all time favorite books. It has great techniques for meditation and beautiful and funny story's about
following your heart and the Dharma. A must read for anyone who meditates and/or is interested in Buddhism.

5 out of 5 stars Compassionate with Psychological Understanding.......2007-05-17

"A Path with Heart" gives a unique Buddhist perspective to heal ourselves emotionally and psychologically. It asks us to accept emotions fully, experience them at a deep level and then to release them. The path is not one of denial but of acceptance and also letting go. Jack Kornfield's words are filled with compassion and equanimity, which are two important facets of our spiritual journey filled with both perils and promises.

This book resonated at a deeper level for me and I found the same inspiration in Nexus: A Neo Novel which is an experiential journey to heart-centered living. Both books offer a path of compassion, which is important in our age. We can share the wisdom of these books within our circle and help transform lives.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable reading!.......2007-05-16

I have had to buy this book several times because I keep giving them out! Enjoyable and written in a format that conveys a spiritual message to any faith. This is a book you will pick up and read time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars An example of the optimism and realism of Buddhism.......2006-11-26

--Just want to add another five-star vote for this deserving, positive, practical, solid, encouraging book. As an experienced Buddhist who has joyfully practiced for many years, I find this one keeps coming off my bookshelf again and again. It's a fine example of wisdom and compassion, of tolerance and discipline, of shared joy and personal responsibility. It is an inspiration. It is good to encounter an author filled with Buddhism's optimism and realism.
--This book, and its outlook, is also an excellent antidote for times when one just feels kind of briefly overwhelmed by the negative craziness in the world (in other words, dukkha). Having just read a pathologically heartless, best-selling work by a fundamentalist atheist, I realized what a miracle it is that we have the opportunity to travel on a path with heart.

5 out of 5 stars A book with heart!!!!!.......2006-05-02

This is an excellent and sensitively written book by a former Buddhist monk and clinical psychologist. Jack Kornfield uses stories and lyrical language to weave a portrait of an authentic spiritual life characterized by insight, compassion and wisdom. He makes Buddhism accessible to modern people and shows us how it is relevant to modern life. This is no small task and Kornfield pulls it off brilliantly, with warmth and an entertaining style. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for deeper meaning in their lives whatever their specific beliefs. It is also an important book that connects Western psychological thought to Eastern worldviews.

If you like this book, you may also find "Toward a Psychology of Awakening" by John Welwood a great next step in your explorations. John Welwood casts a broader net and has a more intellectual approach that compliments Jack Kornfield's more heart-centered story-based way of bringing this wisdom tradition to the West.

If you are looking for a concise essay on Buddhism, then the "World's Religions" by Huston Smith has an excellent relatively short, but information packed essay on Buddhism and another on Hinduism which helps place Buddhism in its historical context.

If your area of interest is more toward Tibetan Buddhism, then you might enjoy "Indestructible Truth" by Reginald A. Ray. However, be warned that Ray is a scholar, the book is long and while it is interesting, it is very detailed. If you are just looking to get a feel for Tibetan Buddhism, then you might want to try "The Art of Happiness" by the Dali Lama. While it doesn't dive deeply into Tibetan Buddhism in a comprehensive way, it does draw out many aspects that are relative and useful to Western people in improving the quality of their lives.

I have read this book on a daily basis for over 10 years. Ms. Beattie's thoughts and feelings about life has helped me to live life in more thoughtful and meaningful ways. On rare occasions (twice), I have bought the book again to share with very special people in my life. That is why I ordered 2 books recently. One Journey to the Heart: Daily Meditations on the Path to Freeing Your Soul for my friend and one for me (my original copy is wearing out!).

I enjoy the daily meditations in this book. I have had this book for years and bought this one to give as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Journey to the Heart.......2005-11-18

This is a magical book. I have had a copy since 1996. At first I devoured it, reading many meditations at one sitting. What Melanie Beattie has to say nurtured my Soul and gave me direction. Then one day I started shaking the book and just opening the book to a random page, but it was never random. What I read was usually very relevant to that moment. Her words were just what I needed to cast away self doubt or understand a situation or provide guidance for my life. Melanie Beattie has great wisdom. I hope you find it as useful as I continue to find it - 11 years later. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-08-08

After reading the other reviews of this book I was really looking forward to reading it. Unfortunately, I found the book rather superficial and without much meaningful content. Some of the really important ideas, such as being able to welcome difficulties in life, the author just skims over. After reading the book, I felt that I was actual more in tune than the author herself without dedicating years on reflection and buddhist practice.

I don't think this book could change anyone life's although it may get someone interested in learning more about meditation and mental reflection.

5 out of 5 stars Appealing, honest, brave.......2007-07-30

This is an excellent book on Buddhism that weaves Susan's own stories and challenges into the fabric of a meditation practice.
I found it accessible, straightforward, and compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful intro to Buddhism.......2007-07-13

Susan Piver's book is a wonderful introduction to Buddhism for the beginner. She explains the basic meditations of Buddhist practice with a fresh, light approach. Many Buddhist meditation texts are bogged down in background, and she skips the unnecessary details to cut to the chase. She is able to use references to the everyday situations most people encounter, and apply principles in the book.
This is my "go-to" book for my practice and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Coming in to yourself.......2007-04-28

When I read the title of this book I was a little taken aback--Afraid of my own life? Could I be? But Piver addresses issues and fears that are common themes in life--fears that are part of the human experience--and shows us in a methodically, and linear way, how to acknowledge and then diffuse those fears, by facing them head on. She disects some basic ideas in a very clear, direct, friendly and accessible way. It is as though Ms. Piver is sitting down to a cup of tea with you, to be that friend that listens and affirms all the crappy stuff that can happen to us, but then goes on to show us that by using the ancient practice of meditiation, ultimately, we can be ok with it. Or perhaps more accurately, it can be ok with us.

The meditation instructions are clear, specific and very accessible--and the 7 day meditation program looks like a great way take a committed practice of meditation to the next level. I'll say, it has inspired ME to get my butt to the cushion more, since reading the book.

According to ancient legends, alchemists use a magical philosopher's stone to transmute lead into gold. In Emotional Alchemy, Tara Bennett-Goleman shows readers how they can use this alchemist metaphor to transform emotional confusion (lead) into insightful clarity (gold). And what does the magic stone represent? "Mindfulness," a lifelong practice that can bring readers more joy and contentment than the gold, according to Bennett-Goleman. "Mindfulness means seeing things as they are without trying to change them," she writes. "The point is to dissolve our reactions to disturbing emotions, being careful not to reject the emotion itself."

Those who have never entered this practice will find a concise and articulate teacher in Bennett-Goleman, who leads national workshops with her husband, author Daniel Goleman (Emotional Intelligence). What make this book such an exciting breakthrough is Bennett-Goleman's ability to apply Buddhist mindfulness to Western psychology. She shows how emotional alchemy can be used to address typical habits, such as mistrust, fear of rejection, feeling unlovable. Readers will also find fascinating scientific facts on how emotional alchemy affects brain chemistry and even cancer survival. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

“May this very important and enticing book find its way into the hearts of readers near and far so that it can perform its mysterious and healing alchemy for the benefit of all.” —John Kabat-Zinn, author of Wherever You Go, There You Are and
Professor of Medicine, University of Massachusetts Medical School

The Transformative Power of Mindfulness

Alchemists sought to transform lead into gold. In the same way, says Tara Bennett- Goleman, we all have the natural ability to turn our moments of confusion or emotional pain into insightful clarity.

Emotional Alchemy maps the mind and shows how, according to recent advances in cognitive therapy, most of what troubles us falls into ten basic emotional patterns, including fear of abandonment, social exclusion (the feeling that we don’t belong), and vulnerability (the feeling that some catastrophe will occur). This remarkable book also teaches us how we can free ourselves of such patterns and replace them with empathy for ourselves and others through the simple practice of mindfulness, an awareness that lets us see things as they truly are without distortion or judgment. Emotional Alchemy provides an insightful explanation of how mindfulness can change not only our lives, but the very structure of our brains, giving us the freedom to be more creative and alive.

Here is a beautifully rendered work full of Buddhist wisdom and stories of how people have used mindfulness to conquer their self-defeating habits. The result is a whole new way of approaching our relationships, work, and internal lives.

2 out of 5 stars Audio version is tedious.......2007-04-11

I have not read the book but tried to listen to the audiotape version and found it hopelessly tedious. Some of the problem may be as a reviewer of the CD version mentioned, that the author has no gift for narration.

The mix of Buddhism and psychology, two subjects I usually find interesting, doesn't work, at least as far as I got - two tapes on - before I stopped listening.

The Buddhism focused on the author's near obsession with the Zen tea ceremony, which she describes in a way that makes it sound about as spiritual as operating a Mister Coffee. Whatever she gets out of the tea ceremony, she is not communicating it here. And if you are not fascinated with the Zen tea ceremony this book may not be for you.

Meanwhile, the psychological bits are mostly based on case studies of the type that an old newspaperman used to call the "suspicious anecdote." The author always seems to be a heroic therapist, and the patient seems to attain Buddha-like insights within minutes of their encounter. The stories sound like outtakes from a "can-you-top-this" contest in the bar of a psychotherapists' convention.

In the end, listening to this book felt like having my teeth cleaned by a well-meaning but ham-handed dental hygienist. The best part was the Zen silence after I stopped listening.

5 out of 5 stars Worth your time and effort (and money).......2007-03-27

Books have been written about mindfulness and they have been written about cognitive-behavioral therapy. The strength of this book is the way in which the author seamlessly combines them and convincingly shows how they complement and enhance one another. In short, mindfulness allows one greater access to experience, to one's own thoughts, emotions, sensations--including the troubling ones, which we so often suppress or avoid. In terms of therapy, awareness is invaluable. But even for someone not in therapy, it's equally essential. Mindfulness allows us to understand and break out of automatic, self-harming patterns. Bennett-Goleman gives a good roadmap of how to accomplish that.

1 out of 5 stars Audio CD review: not good. Read the book instead and don't buy this because you like her hubby's stuff.......2006-12-20

I bought this audio CD on the strength of my enjoyment of this woman's husband's books, which I keep in my library and re-read occasionally-the "Emotional Intelligence" series. This was a mistake; it's not at all like her husband's books. First of all, you really have to be into Buddhist philosphy and compassionate observation. If that's not your bag, you might not be happy with this purchase. Second, I found some of the examples of her patients to be a bit tortured. For instance, one patient has a breakthrough by recalling something from when she was an infant! Which seems hard to be believe....Finally, I think it was a mistake for the author to read the book. Her voice is okay, but she speaks incredibly slowly. I listen to a lot of audio CDs, and this is the slowest reading I have ever heard. I realize that if we are stressing soothing and zen, we might not want a rapid fire pace, but this goes too far.

3 out of 5 stars It's the other way around...........2006-07-12

The heart heals the head. Overthinking is the fastest way to get yourself stuck. The heart sees and knows what the intellect cannot. The head serves the heart and only when the heart "gets" it ... can healing begin. A great book but I believe the reverse is true. Only the heart can heal a broken heart. Mental gymnastics can be a brilliant form of denial. The heart creates, the heart desires, and the heart is what does the healing. It is the seat of love.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely useful for those who want to do deep work!.......2006-05-13

Tara Bennett-Goleman has a very lyrical and almost poetical way of writing. She uses vivid and powerful examples to illustrate her points and this is a value add because it drives the points she is making home. On the other hand, she can be repetitious and some people might find her meandering a bit annoying. However, for me it was forgivable and even helped to reinforce the material.

With respect to content, I liked that there were many exercises scattered throughout the book that will help you to work with your emotions. I also agree with the author that combining mindfulness with schema therapy is very powerful. With mindfulness you can slow things down and see what is really happening at a deep level. When this is combined with cognitive techniques, there is a real potential for emotional transformation.

Emotions can be on object of meditation just like anything else and interestingly, if one stays with an emotion with openness and curiosity this in itself can bring unconscious underlying needs to surface. It has been said that if one can stay with their emotions in the moment, they can be ride this wave into their very soul. This is a beautiful statement and I believe there is much truth to it. Tara Bennett-Goleman taps into this dynamic and combines it integrates it with more contemporary psychotherapy.

The bottom line of this review is that if you are trying to work through difficult emotions, this book can really help you. As Krishnamurti once said, "seeing the truth deeply is what liberates, not our efforts to be free." I believe this statement captures the spirit of this book.

In this extended reflection on the life of David, drawn from the accounts in the two books of Samuel and from the Psalms, author and self-described Sunday school teacher Beth Moore translates into plain and direct language the message she finds in this story of a shepherd boy who is chosen as God's own servant. Moore approaches these texts not as a scholar but as a believer. As the inclusion of review questions would suggest, her interest here is less historical and more immediately pragmatic: she wishes to see what David's life has to say to followers of Christ. Her reading is personal, yet supported by a study of the Hebrew and Greek texts--above all, the notes to the book suggest, through a number of Bible dictionaries and concordances. While apparently not well-versed in English poetry (she calls John Dryden a 16th-century philosopher when most would call him a 17th-century poet), the real appeal of the book for many will lie in its approachable style: the writing is direct, personal, and honest. She writes, she tells people, as a "regular" person who says, "I don't make Christ part of my life; He is my life." --Doug Thorpe

5 out of 5 stars Awsome book!.......2007-01-09

Reading this book is like eating Thanksgiving dinner. You read until you are stuffed with so much information. Then you have to stop and ingest it. You have to pray over what you have learned; soaking in all of the extra insight and knowledge. Then after the feeling of fullness begins to subside, you go back for more...and more...and more! This book is not only a glimpse at the life of David. It also explores other people who were important in making David the man that God intended for him to be. While exploring David's life, you will begin to explore your own life...your own ministry. None of us are worthy or perfect by any means. This book explores David's weaknesses in a way that you can compare your own short comings and know that you can be a person after Gods own heart.

4 out of 5 stars A Focused Study.......2005-08-26

Beth Moore chose to delve into the life and times of David, a mere shepherd boy who was chosen to be the leader of Israel. In A HEART LIKE HIS, Moore poses the practical questions as to how a person can be forgiven and restored after sin? How a person can continue to be faithful when nothing seems to be going his way? How can a person find God when feeling lonely? How important is God's influence on our family?

Moore begins the journey into David's life in the book of 1 Samuel. She uses several Biblical references and provides background into the trials and tribulations David faced. With God's assistance, David rose from basic obscurity into a position of amazing power. When he operates outside of God's will, he makes an unwise decision that will prove to unravel his long reign and have dire consequences on his family. In his earlier times, Moore depicts David who continually seeking God's guidance and is quick to offer praise to God. Yet, David was a man with a weakness for beautiful women. Although he was married, David enjoyed the attention his power garnered him from the fairer sex. Moore enhances the reader's understanding of how David's adulterous conduct with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband cast David out of God's will. On this subject, Moore states that David had a "far away heart." It was not until David was "bankrupt in spirit" over the death of his illegitimate son that he repented for his sins. Moore reminds the reader that although God will forgive us of our sins, He will pass judgement on us.

In A HEART LIKE HIS, Moore does a very good job of setting the scene. She takes us back to the beginning even before David had knowledge of the greater things in store for him. The book's lessons are based mainly on 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel. A HEART LIKE HIS would be a great tool for individual or group study. Each chapter is laden with cross-references to other Biblical references. At times, it was confusing because the complete Biblical citation was not used in the text. However, this was not distracting enough to detract from the great presentation of King David's reign.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Treatment of David's Life!.......2002-10-30

A few years ago the women's Bible study in my church went through the video version of "A Heart Like His." I heard glowing reviews from one lady after another, speaking of how pertinent and powerful the material was. Unfortunately, it was then geared exclusively to women, so I never watched the videos myself.

With the memory of those glowing reviews still fresh in mind, I decided to purchase the book version and see for myself if Beth Moore's teaching lived up to its reputation. I was certainly NOT disappointed. This book is an outstanding treatment of the triumphs and the tragedies of Israel's most famous king.

Moore takes practically every significant incident from David's life and applies the spiritual principles to life today. Through her exposition here, the reader gets to know David much better, and learns why he has been called "a man after God's own heart." The author's treatment is chronological, starting from the events surrounding David's emergence on the Biblical scene as a young boy to the transfer of his throne as an old man to his son Solomon.

I recommend this book very highly to anyone wanting to gain a better understanding of the life of King David. The book is very easy reading, yet is profound in its insights. Men and women, clergy and laity alike will benefit from Moore's painstakingly thorough work.

5 out of 5 stars A moving, humorous, tearful journey through David's life.......2000-07-27

Beth's book is a wonderfully written journey through the life of a man who sought God's own heart. She fluctuates between humorous observations on the actions of the Biblical characters I thought I knew so well, and touching parallels to the life of the ultimate "Son of Man". This book held me captivated from the introduction to the final period. I look forward to more books like this from Beth.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book teaching through the Bible for women today.......1999-11-17

A wonderful work, Beth, is available to God to be used, and ends up blessing all of us. Our women's Bible Study is just finishing this work. All the women are anxious to do another work by Beth, and love her style of waiting on the Lord to speak to her, and acting in obedience. It has taught me many things that I can use in my daily life as a christian.

Book Description

One of the most enjoyable parts of a yoga class comes when we rest in savasana—the "corpse" pose—and realize deep serenity, a sense of eff ortless joy, and a glimpse into our true nature as unqualified presence. How is this so? Master teacher Richard Miller explains that this experience is a manifestation of yoga nidra, the meditative state of mind-body union at the heart of all yoga practice. A powerful integration of book and CD audio learning, Yoga Nidra is an ancient tantric yoga path that leads to inner freedom. Th rough accessible language appropriate for any level of practice, Miller takes us step by step through the traditional techniques of relaxation and meditation to help us move toward the realization of "unqualified presence"—the ultimate aim of yoga—a goal unreachable through posture practice alone. Through his expert guidance, students will experience: • Deep relaxation for relief from day-to-day stress • The development of "one-pointedness"—a key to spiritual awakening • Healing from painful emotions, such as fear, grief, and anger • More effective and energizing sleep, and much more Suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners—but new to most Westerners—Yoga Nidra provides an unmatched way to experience the culmination of the art of yoga, and the deeper physical, emotional, and spiritual rewards that are its promise.

5 out of 5 stars Book is helpful tool for insomniacs.......2007-06-28

I am a 60-year-old woman who has struggled with severe insomnia since her mid-twenties. I have used many strategies to help with this, some with more success than others. This book and CD have been very useful tools for me. It's emphasis is a form of meditation that you can take with you into your daily life. I have only been practicing it for a month now (although I have long practiced yoga) with very promising results.

Richard Miller has a very relaxing and soothing voice, making the cd that accompanies this book very enjoyable. It has helped me take the next step in my yoga journey.

5 out of 5 stars Yoga Nidra The Meditative Heart of Yoga.......2006-11-27

I am happy to have this little yet powerful book in my hands. I have practiced Yoga Nidra with Richard on retreat, but this little gem with accompanying CD has given me the opportunity to deepen my practice at home. Chapter 2, gives me the goodies of understanding such as the sheaths and stages of the practice as well as breaking down the steps. Richard makes a lovely connection between the Zen steps of progression which lead to awakening and the movements which happen within us as we expereince the return "to what you have been all along, infinite, unlimited spacious Presence." It is the on going practice with Richard's Yoga Nidra that has helped me to STOP the search....and just be.

3 out of 5 stars Yoga Nidra: The Meditative Heart of Yoga.......2006-11-04

I really love this book. I teach Yoga Nidra and find Richard Miller's book to be very informative, particularly the part of the book which allows you to streamline your practice to your own needs. The CD in the back is a definite plus and so very helpful to the practitioner. I recommend it to my students for times whn they can't make it to class.

5 out of 5 stars Review from a different perspective.......2007-09-05

Most often, a reviewer presents a "cold analytical autopsy" of a book, gives a content-oriented analysis, or gives an enthusiatic "Hurrah, great/entertaining reading!". While these devices help in preparing oneself to judge whether the contents may be of interest academically or indicate the overall emotional impact upon a reader, I would like to make a more generalized and personal statement regarding this volume. I have been reading/"researching" spirituality for decades and have a fairly broad understanding and appreciation of the various viewpoints/messages/practices/ etc. which are "out there". But, I must say that until I read Robert Adams' work, I had never been able to find a framework which so comprehensively and convincingly explained the personal experiences I was having -if only I had come across this work so much earlier (please, no "cracks" about "when the student is ready...), how infinitely it would have eased my mind and guided me away from "mistakes" due to mis-understanding how my experiences were in fact a coherent part of "the process". I write these words for any who may be searching for something to "make coherent sense" out of a process which they may be going through which doesn't seem to be adequately encompassed by any other third party structures. For me and for "where I am at", this is the most valuable book I have "stumbled across"(?)in a long time. It has helped not merely to understand an "intellectual idea" but to understand my personal experience - I am sure there are others at a similar point who would benefit greatly from reading his words and sharing his understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-09-04

While none of us can ever really know the spiritual "mind" of another, the voice of Robert Adams is as authentic as any I've read. His message is advanced and may not be appropriate for the spiritual "beginner," but there is no question in my mind he has been illuminated to a degree the rest of us cannot even imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Great advaita/nonduality book by a westerner.......2007-08-25

I found this book a nice summary of advaita and nondual thought...particularly the lineage from Ramana Maharshi.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I'v ever read.......2007-06-12

I have been reading some hundreds of spiritual books, but this one is latest and the best. I have bought a lot of books from amazon.com and amazon.uk, but this is the only book I feel I like would like to chare my experience of! It have never read a book like this.
Like it takes away everything that is false, and leaves only truth!
So gentle, humorous, intelligent !
And it has small trainings to to to help oneself to abide in the Self !
Totally wonderful book.
If I would go alone to a remote Island, this would be the book I would bring.

5 out of 5 stars Superb presentation of many basic Vajrayana practices.......2005-01-08

After having enjoyed Pema Chodron's wonderful video set "Good Medicine" (6305642842), Her "Noble Heart" set of 6 cassettes was greatly enhanced. I could picture her orchestrating this retreat at her Monastery in Eastern Canada. That is exactly how this tape set is arranged. She provides an enjoyable, enthusiastic lecture with examples, stories, personal experiences, input from her Master Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, etc. For each of the 12 segments (sides of cassettes) she also includes meditations and visualizations as appropriate. Topics include:
1. Bodhichitta Practice--ego, 3 noble principles, etc.
2. cultivating friendliness through meditation--posture, calm abiding (shamatha), working with thoughts, non-grasping mind...
3. developing inner strength/trust--experiencing reality, the 4 limitless ones (loving kindness, compassion, joy, & equanimity, materialism...
4. The Practice of Maitri (loving kindness)--the roots of suffering and happiness, ignorance, etc. Great presentation on Maitri practice!
5. Compassion practice--your "soft spot," ego's weaknesses, addiction and obsession, dualistic thinking, far & near enemies of practice, pity/overwhelm/forgiveness
6. Unlimited joy & equanimity--stages of practice, openness, melting practice, big sky mind, etc.
7. Tonglen (sending & receiving)--shunyata--openness of being, awakening Bodhichitta, stages of tonglen practice, dissolving the armor of self-protection, etc.
8. Meditation & wisdom--post-meditation, purity, categories of meditation, prajna (wisdom/understanding), etc.
9. Generosity, discipline, & patience--categories of them, undoing deep-seated patterns, antidote to aggression, etc.
10. Joyful exertion--the nondual paramitas, contemplation, exertion, nonduality, etc.
11. Shunyata Meditation--groundlessness, nature of mind, opening mind, contemplating equanimity, nongrasping, etc.
12. Bodhichitta to the world--connectedness, limitless compassion, dissolving barriers, the Dharmic habit, Bodhichitta slogans (only touched on here--see her "Start Where You Are" for this).
Overall, it's almost like being there. A wonderful experience. She covers lots of ground in her easygoing, warm, and wise style that balances theory with practice. A gem.

If you are ready to hear what Pema has to say this tape series can change your life.Pema presents her information in clear and easy to understand terms.I believe she instructs us to confront reality than follow with a "chaser" of compassion. This method keeps your self-discovery from overwhelming you and keeping you from continuing.Actually Pema uses the word friendliness to discribe how we must approach this self-understanding.At first I thought that was such a wimpy term-'friendly'.It turns out if you can muster up friendliness for yourself when you begin to uncover your self you will be doing well indeed. Thank you Pema.
