Book Description

Have you ever walked into a half-empty Parisian restaurant, only to be told that it’s “complet”? Attempted to say “merci beaucoup” and accidentally complimented someone’s physique? Been overlooked at the boulangerie due to your adherence to the bizarre foreign custom of waiting in line? Well, you’re not alone. The internationally bestselling author of A Year in the Merde and In the Merde for Love has been there too, and he is here to help. In Talk to the Snail, Stephen Clarke distills the fruits of years spent in the French trenches into a truly handy (and hilarious) book of advice. Read this book, and find out how to get good service from the grumpiest waiter; be exquisitely polite and brutally rude at the same time; and employ the language of l’amour and le sexe. Everything you need is here in this funny, informative, and seriously useful guide to getting what you really want from the French.

4 out of 5 stars Funny, Witty, Informative.......2007-09-27

Stephen Clarke has such an incredible sense of humor! After devouring A Year in the Merde and Merde Actually, I could not resist reading Talk to the Snail. This book is by far the weakest one but once again, it made me laugh and taught me a few interesting and useful things about the French.

Apparently, even some French find Clarke's novels amusing. I asked my French tutor whether she has heard about this trilogy. To my surprise, she immediately smiled and said that A Year in the Merde is hilarious.

2 out of 5 stars Good but nor Deep.......2007-09-22

It's the fourth or fifth book I read about France viewed from the eyes of an Anglo-Saxon (American, British, Canadian, Australian).
Up to this point, it has been the most disappointing one. The beginnign looked good but I quickly realized that all described was, while true, very superficial. The biggest point being that this books describes pretty well Parisians but definitely not the rest of the population. To sum it up, even if the author claims having lived 12 years in France, he definitely has missed to get into the skin of the "locals". It's too bad because his style is pretty good.
Compared to superb books like "Almost French" or "60 Millions French can't be wrong", this one doesn't fare very well. I still have to read "A Year in the Merde" and want to go through it.

The book is a great fun for me because I know the habits of the French people. Great work of Stephen Clarke!!

5 out of 5 stars Spot on.......2007-07-08

I have loved Stephen Clarke's novels but this humorous take on the French, all things French, and especially all things NOT British is a classic.

I spend a lot of time in Paris, and his observations are absolutely spot on. While he primarily writes about how the French see English speakers (i.e. the British, not necessarily Americans) his observations apply to both.

If you have never visited France, some of what he writes might seem rude. It is about as accurate in observation as I have read anywhere, however. Hurrah to Stephen Clarke! More! More!

This book was very helpful and practical in dealing with uncomfortable work environments in a Christian manner. It gave specific examples of ways to deal with difficult situations, using scriptural principles based on the life of King David.

5 out of 5 stars It's a great book.......2006-03-20

I had a friend who was going thru some very difficult times at work with a few co-workers. I saw the book and purchased it for myself but once I read it I knew that my friend could benefit from reading it so I gave it to her because her situation was more complex than mine. She thanked me for the book because she knew that it would help her to better understand how to survive in a hostile work environment.

I haven't quite finished this book yet but I am almost done. This book is definately worth reading, if you are married or even thinking about getting married. I can see a difference already in my marriage and I haven't even finished the book yet. This is defnately a must read!

5 out of 5 stars At Last, some truthful, Biblical principals to make your marriage great!.......2007-05-12

Wonderful principals that can be immediately put into practice in your marriage. I was so tired of hearing the same ol thing, "I don't 'deserve' this, I have to look out for myself, he doesn't understand me" If we are thinking of the other person first, it is difficult to be focused on ourselves. A must read for weak and strong marriages alike.

Book Description

A Formatio book. Let's give ourselves an A for effort. When we fail to rest we do more than burn ourselves out. We misunderstand the God who calls us to rest--who created us to be people of rest. Let's face it: our rest needs work. Sabbath recalls our creation, and with it God's satisfaction with us as he made us, without our hurried wrangling and harried worrying. It also recalls God's deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt, and with it God's ability to do completely what we cannot complete in ourselves. Sabbath keeping reminds us that we are free to rest each week.Eighteen months in Tel Aviv, Israel, where a weekly sabbath is built into the culture, began Lynne M. Baab's twenty-five-year embrace of a rhythm of rest--as a stay-at-home mom, as a professional writer working out of her home and as a minister of the gospel. With collected insights from sabbath keepers of all ages and backgrounds, Sabbath Keeping offers a practical and hopeful guidebook that encourages all of us to slow down and enjoy our relationship with the God of the universe.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-10-10

This book challenged and inspired me all at the same. The author's candid thoughts regarding her own experience with the Sabbath helped me embrace the idea of starting this ritual on my own. It is a great book and worth reading!!

5 out of 5 stars Creative Sabbath keeping.......2006-12-07

This is a terrific book. I especially liked Lynne's example of how she tries to fast from "words" as part of her Sabbath-keeping, since much of her work entails reading/writing/speaking words. I've taken that to heart, and am experimenting with ways to implement it more fully in my Sabbaths.

5 out of 5 stars Great, life-changing book........2006-01-19

We as Americans have gotten so far away from even the thought of taking an entire day to rest, regroup, and be refreshed. It seems to be beyond our imagination that taking such a day could actually make the rest of our week go even better and that we will be not only more productive, but happier and peaceful. I am so grateful to Lynne Baab for writing this book because it helped confirm that having a day of rest is really imperative for our spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. Since I started my Sabbath days I can truly notice a difference in
every one of those areas of my life. And I love how Lynne is not legalistic about how we should conduct ourselves on our personal Sabbath day---that everyone has different needs and styles. Also that our Sabbath practices will change over the years as our circumstances change. I intend on giving away copies of this book to all of my stressed friends who have been raised in this culture to think that if we aren't frantically running around PRODUCING and multi-tasking then we aren't doing anything of worth. We need to stop, take a deep breath, and enjoy a weekly Sabbath where we will find treasures and joys we never knew we could be experiencing!
See Isaiah 58:13-14 for a great scripture concerning the Sabbath.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful way to understand the beauty of the Sabbath!.......2005-03-21

This book is an easy read, but packed full of practical wisdom about keeping the Sabbath. It helped me to see how the ancient tradition of Sabbath-keeping can benefit us in the fast-paced world we live in today. Lynne recognizes the vast differences in each of our lives, and has ideas and suggestions that we can each apply in the way that works for us. If you want an easy way to understand how observing the Sabbath can bring joy to your life, just set aside a morning to do nothing but sit on the couch with this book and a cup of coffee or tea. You'll be changed after the experience!

I've been a yo-yo dieter all my life, from one "diet" to the next, losing weight and then gaining it back. Dr. Gullo's book is a guide to lifestyle changes that I can make so that I never have to do that again. I've lost 6 pounds in the first 2 weeks, and I'm only half way through the book! I will share with everyone I know!

5 out of 5 stars Not just a "Diet Book".......2007-06-30

I thought I'd read "it all" untill I found this wonderful book. All I can say about The Thin Commandments is, "where have you been all my life?" This is, bar none, the best book ever on not just losing weight, but in developing a mind set and learning strategies for KEEPING the weight off for good. Although I have lost weight many times, until now I found it impossible to maintain my losses. For the first time I have the tools I need to do so. Thank you, Thank you Dr Gullo!!! I recommend The Thin Commandments without hesitation!

5 out of 5 stars These Commandments are True..........2007-05-12

Wow, the mental help in this book is so beneficial. Dr. Gullo points out the patterns of where most people 'fall off the wagon' on their diets and gives very good stratagies for breaking bad habits. It's been great for me. Just like the real 10 commandments there are negative consequences for breaking them and true happiness in keeping them!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Ideas and beneficial book that really works.......2007-04-25

I started my life change diet on Jan 8th first starting the master cleanse diet... and many other diets. On March 29th, I went to my doctor and he weighed me... at 210. I had already started this diet 1 week prior. My doctor took my weight and I had lost a total of ten pounds. I am now 65+ pounds lighter and I have learned how to eat properly without missing out on the fatty foods.
Some of the things are hard to find such as the scandanavian crisp bread, but I did indeed find the wassa bread in a health food store.

I eat a half a grapefruit a day and cinnamon in my cereal... and I have to say I feel and look great. I love this book and I recommend it over and over again

Please buy the book for yourself first and believe me... you will be glad you did it. I just wish I had read the book a yr ago when I had purchased it... I would be a 130 pound lady now... but I have 20 more to go.

Thanks for reading

In Dean Sluyter's clever The Zen Commandments, the author lays down 10 guidelines for living a more present life and experiencing moment-to-moment awareness. Some of his "commandments" are Zen interpretations of the 10 laws Moses brought down from Mount Sinai; others have nothing to do with the prophet's inscribed tablets. In one example, Sluyter takes the Fourth Commandment--Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy--and gives it a Zen twist:
The whole idea of Sabbath is a temporary withdrawal from limited worldly activities in order to connect to the limitlessness that some people call God. Here ... we're learning to be in a state of utter rest seven days a week, 60 seconds a minute, transcending and silently witnessing all physical and mental activities, even while performing them."

Through the moment-to-moment awareness that Zen demands, we constantly stay in touch with God, or the Infinite (or whatever individuals choose to call it), Sluyter reminds us. Other Zen commandments are more contemporary and have nothing to do with biblical precepts. Perhaps one of his most useful guidelines is his enjoinder to "Notice the Moment":

On our journey through life, we think of the time we spent walking down the hall from Office A to Office B as intermission, dead time, mere connective tissue. But there is no intermission. The show never stops. Every moment is the only moment.
Sluyter sprinkles his chapters with eclectic quotes from Bob Dylan, Indian gurus, Miles Davis, Franz Kafka, even Bill Clinton. This is a lively book and one that will almost certainly give you pause in your day, whether it's to simply stop and take a breath while rushing through your morning routine, or to notice the roadside flowers while stalled in rush-hour traffic. --Demian McLean

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars what about the actual precepts?.......2007-08-21

This book, though probably not actually harmful, is something of a rip off. I'm tired of books that are not about Zen - and have very little at all to do with Zen - using "Zen" in the title; and if this book had anything to do with Zen, or if the author knew anything about it, the author would KNOW that Zen already has it's version of the "commandments." And that would be the Sixteen Bodhisattva Precepts, which include the Ten Grave Precepts. The precepts are a foundation of all Mahayana Buddhist practice. They are rigorous, difficult, and valuable; and it is a shame that someone would write a book whose title suggests that it will give you the Zen equivalent of the commandments, and then simply make things up, rather than addressing the wonderful guidelines for practice that the great teachers in our tradition have already laid down for us. This book should be called "Dean Sluyter's Ten Suggestions" - a much more accurate title - and if you want a book about ZEN ethics, read Reb Anderson's "Being Upright" (the best I've read on the subject), or Robert Aitken's "Mind of Clover".

5 out of 5 stars Notice The Moment.......2007-04-10

Dean Sluyter writes, "On our journey through life, we think of, say, stopping for gas or going to the bathroom as time out from the main event, from our "real" activities. We think of the time we spend walking down the corridor from Office A to Office B as intermission, dead time, mere connective tissue. But there is no intermission. The show never stops.Every moment is the only moment." Living mindfully each moment is one of the Zen commandments that Sluyter artfully teaches in this wonderful book that you will likely read more than once.
The nine other commandments express Zen essence in an earthy way. This does not have the feel of religion, dogmatism, or preaching. It's more like a friend telling you what he learned in his travels that just might change your way of experiencing the world. The author has taught meditation for over thirty years. I feel certain that he is an excellent teacher. Quoting diverse sources such as Miles Davis, Thoreau, Bill Clinton, and Euripides, Sluyter keeps us on our toes with the wisdom coming from North, West, East, and South. This has taken its place as one of my favorite books.

5 out of 5 stars Wisdom and Enlightenment in a Simple Package.......2006-10-14

No, you don't need to give up the religion you grew up with to embrace the thoughts and perspectives this excellent book contains. The author teaches the lessons in an accessible way and leads you on a path to inner freedom and contentment. Its a quick read but you may find yourself reading again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh New Look at Zen.......2003-09-09

This book will open your eyes to a wonderful new way to approach Zen and how you can actually apply it to everyday life even if you are down in the trenches just putting one foot in front of the other. I loved reading it, laughed frequently and was sorry when I finished.

Book Description

Chief Justice Roy Moore believes the state must acknowledge the moral principles on which America was founded and that it is not illegal to do so. While the separation of church and state may be a credible and legitimate tenet, it has been largely misconstrued and abused during the last forty years.

Moore was sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States. His critics, both within conservative circles and without, have maintained that he violated the law by disobeying the order of a federal judge to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments. But Moore brilliantly argues that those who have ordered him to violate his oath have, in fact, broken the law.

So Help Me God will articulate why he believes elected and appointed government officials have the right and the obligation to acknowledge God as the foundation of American government and jurisprudence.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps past the point of no return, but a timely book........2007-04-03

To those who believe in Jesus and familar with the history of our America will understand this book.

To those who do not believe in Jesus and care little about our nation's history will hate this book, just as Jesus was hated.

America has become pluralistic. A nation of many gods and idolotry. We worship anything and everything but the one and only God of Abraham, the Alpha and Omega, the great I am and Lord of the universe. We refuse to worship God Almighty because of pride and fear of rules. The liberal mindset of America today has violated the 2nd commandment -- thou shall not have make a graven image (idolotry). We have made a god to suit ourself, created our own rules and removed the once understood 10 commandments. Then we wonder why our country has so many problems with crime and immorality. We have forgot from where we came.

[...] Where will you go when you die? Are you Good enough to go to heaven?

5 out of 5 stars crystal clear..........2007-01-03

Thank you, Judge Moore for your uncompromising stand in regard to following the Constitution, and the rule of law. It's so easy these days to compromise, and take the easy path. It's refreshing to see a man with backbone and courage, who counts the cost, and still does the right thing! You present your case explaining the foundations of the Constitution and rule of law with crystal clarity. You're truly an inspiration. In the ages to come, we will find Judge Moore hanging out with Jefferson, Washington, Adams...and the rest of our great nation's founders.

In Alabama Judge Moore was not allowed to acknowledge the Judeo-Christian God and His ten commandments as being the foundation for our laws, something that is easily demonstrable and clearly our heritage. Judge Moore simply exposed the hypocrisy of a judicial system that acknowledges the Judeo-Christian God by opening in prayer and swearing oaths on a Bible, but prohibits acknowledging God in our historical foundation for law as he did. Judge Moore further demonstrated their logically fallacious reasoning in that they would not allow him to display the commandments, citing the establishment clause, but they refused to define the key word "religion" in this clause. So in effect, they decided that he violated a clause that they were unwilling to define. In doing so Judge Thompson actually stated that he found what Judge Moore did "religiously offensive." How ironic considering Thompson would not even define the word.

Simply put, every law and liberty upon which this country was founded is based on the Judeo-Christian ethic. The secular humanist liberal progressives do not want the American public to recognize that. They point to a few secular oriented statements, but fail to point out that the great preponderance of the evidence points toward biblical foundations for our laws and liberties. Facts like, 1/3 of the quotes in the books and papers written by founding fathers are Bible verses, that 52 of the 55 were regular in church attendance, and that the prolific use of references to God in official documents points to the fact that their view of the establishment clause was far different than the secularist of today that wishes to ban all such reference. Even the Declaration of Independence that established our liberty to be an independent nation states that our rights come from the Creator and because of that they are unalienable (absolute, not awarded by human power, not transferable to another power, and incapable of repudiation). This knowledge interferes with the humanist agenda to change laws and liberties as we humans progress to a so-called higher form of liberal society by casting off the shackles of these Creator endowed rights. But of course this is anarchy, for there are no humanistic standards for right and wrong that can be agreed upon by millions of discordant people each serving their own self-interest. Outside of the words of a revelatory God such as we find in the Bible nothing can be said to be inherently right or wrong. Furthermore, concepts like separation of church and state, freedom of speech, rule of law, juvenile restrictions, bearing false witness, sanctity of life, and marriage, are in and of themselves biblical concepts. They flow from and through that particular belief system.

The secular humanistic viewpoint is also hypocritical since it is itself a religious belief system. As it has been aptly said, there can be no separation of church and state for the secular humanist, for the state is their church. The establishment clause prohibits government interference with the free exercise of religion. By banning all acknowledgement of God by government officials, even when it is based on clear historical reference, the government is interfering. Even a world famous atheist that recently converted to theism because of the powerful argument to design from the plethora of discoveries in genetics and molecular cell biology says the liberal activist judges in the U.S. have interpreted the constitution the wrong way. Antony Flew said "the Supreme Court has utterly misinterpreted the clause in the Constitution about not establishing a religion: misunderstanding it as imposing a ban on all official reference to religion." Although a theist, he is only barely so. This guy hopes there is not an afterlife and does not like any organized religions (including Christianity), which makes him an especially credible witness to what is going on in this country.

The facts are clear, there is a faction that is currently trying to establish secular humanism as our national religion, and they are using state agency to do so. Will the American populace tolerate the complete secularization of society through government supported, communistic social policy dependency and its associated philosophical indoctrination into the state sponsored religion of secular humanism? Liberals don't want you to know that behind all the smoke and mirrors of political rhetoric and banter, this is the true battle raging in 21st century America.

Are our laws and liberties going to be subject to the whims of secular humanist progressives, or shall they remain in the domain of the constitution and its amendments as set forth with the original intent of the framers? We stand at a crossroads as we begin the 21st century. Is America going to become the brave new world of the liberal with all the moral norms of the jungle, or are we going to be a constitutional republic founded upon biblical principles, the same principles that made this nation great for its first 200 years. This is the generation that must choose. Read Roy's book, it is an eye opener, but don't expect those of the secular humanist persuasion to give it a good review.

5 out of 5 stars Judge Moore for Supreme Court.......2005-11-08

Wow, finally the whole story. It is hard to believe that men with as much courage, backbone, and strong morality still exist in America. This, folks, is the story of a modern American HERO. Nowadays, true heroes are ignored, blacklisted, put in jail, harassed, made fun of, and purposely misunderstood. Moore is no exception, as this story points out. In the meantime, I will be helping this man become the next governor of Alabama.

Product Description

`History: Fiction or Science? Chronology 2` is the second volume of the most explosive and astounding tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by rock solid scientific data. The book is easy and pleasant to read; it is well-illustrated, contains hundreds of charts, graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays. You will be amazed to discover: - That the chronology universally accepted today and taken for granted is simply wrong; - That ALL methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts known today are erroneous or non-exact; - That there is not a single document that could be reliably dated earlier than the XIth century; The Author refers to the Middle Ages as the “Antiquity” and proves mutual superimposition of the Second and the Third Roman Empire, both of which become identified as the respective kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Furthermore, he asserts that the famous reform of the Occidental Church in the XI century by “Pope Gregory Hildebrand” was the reflection of the XII century reforms of Byzantine emperor Andronicus who in his turn identifies with Jesus Christ. The Trojan war counted by Homer happened only as late as of the XIII century A.D. and the great poet actually lived in XIV century A.D. No stone in history of Antiquity is left unturned. Literally. This book is the beginning of a major correction to the chronology we live with.

I don't care what other people say of this book. Those affirmig it's fake, they hadn't ever read it. Or have some special reasons to do so. "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see..." This book won't make you feel comfortable. It'll make you feel free. It'll make you feel you're "not the only one" to feel you'd been lied to for centuries.

5 out of 5 stars Suprise! Suprise!.......2007-03-22

Here is a serie of books which turns "the whole world" upside down. I learned a lot of it and I hope that a new book from A.T. Fomenko will follow very quick. A absolute must for everybody who is interested in history or even a little bit from it.

5 out of 5 stars Prescient St Augustine?.......2006-02-05

We can so far divide the New Chronology into the following three parts:

a) The verifiable theory that proves consensual chronology wrong with the aid of astronomy, statistics and mathematics;

b) The new chronology hypothesis based on a new understanding of known historical facts and the most likely logical explanation of the most obvious inconsistencies inherent in the official version of history;

c) The history conjectures, that is experimental historical reconstructions based on assumptions that the authors believe to make sense in the light of their research and linguistic parallels - void of ironclad factual support to date.

Fomenko's theory complies with the most rigid scientific standards as a whole:

It gives a coherent explanation of what we already know.

- It is consistent: independent lines of inquiry all lead to the same conclusion.

- The predictions it makes are confirmed empirically.

Fomenko goes by the following axioms:

- Chronology is the basis of history;

- Human evolution has always been linear, gradual and irreversible;

- The "cyclic" nature of human civilization is a myth, likewise all the gaps, duplicates, "dark ages" and "renaissances" that we know from consensual history;

- The accumulation of geographical knowledge as reflected in cartography is a gradual and irreversible process;

- The chronological distance between a given manuscript and the events described therein is proportional to the amount of distortions it contains;

- There is no "useless" information in authentic ancient sources.

Why the mainstream historians do not shower mathematician Academician Dr.Prof Fomenko with thanks and laurels?

The Russians:

Because Fomenko asserts that there was no such thing as the Tartar and Mongol invasion followed by three centuries of slavery, providing a formidable body of documental evidence to prove his assertion. The so-called "Tartars and Mongols" were the actual ancestors of the modern Russians, living in a bilingual state with Arabic spoken as freely as Russian. The ancient Russian state was governed by a double structure of civil and military authorities. The hordes were actually professional armies with a tradition of lifelong conscription (the recruitment being the so-called "blood tax"). Their "invasions" were punitive operations against the regions that attempted tax evasion. Fomenko proves that Russian history as we know it today is a blatant forgery concocted by a host of German scientists brought to Russia by the usurper dynasty of the Romanovs, whose ascension to the throne was the result of coup d'état, charged with the mission of making their reign look legitimate. Fomenko proves Ivan the Terrible to be a collation of four rulers, no less. They represented the two rival dynasties - the legitimate rulers and the ambitious upstarts. The winner took it all! Over some 30 years of controversy, Russian historians have made a most remarkable transition - they were initially accusing the young mathematician Fomenko of anticommunist dissident activity and attempts to deface the historical legacy of Soviet Russia; nowadays the middle-aged mathematician is accused of adhering to "pro-communist Russian nationalism" and defacing the proud historical legacy of Great Russia.

The Westerners:

Because Fomenko blows consensual Russian history to smithereens, successfully removing a crucial cornerstone from underneath the otherwise impeccable edifice of World History. Fomenko adds insult to injury, wiping out one by one the Ancient Rome (the foundation of Rome in Italy is dated to the XIV century A. D.), the Ancient Greece and its numerous poleis, which he identifies as the mediaeval crusader settlements on the territory of Greece, and the Ancient Egypt (the pyramids of Giza become dated to the XI-XV century A. D. and identified as the royal cemetery of the Global "Mongolian" Empire, no less). The civilization of the Ancient Egypt is irrefutably dated to the XII-XV century A. D. with the aid of the ancient Egyptian horoscopes cut in stone. He was the first one to decipher and date all such horoscopes, coming up with mediaeval dates in every case. English historians rage at the suggestion that the history of Ancient England was de facto a Byzantine import transplanted to the English soil by the fugitive Byzantine nobility. To reward the English historians who consider themselves the true scribes of World History, the cover of the present book portrays Tintoretto's Jesus Christ crucified on the Big Ben.

The Chinese:

Because Fomenko wipes out the Ancient History of China outright. No such thing. Full point. The compilation of the so-called Ancient Chinese History is reliably datable to the XVII-XVIII century only. It is perfectly recognizable as the Ancient European history, reworked and transcribed in hieroglyphs as yet another historical transplantation, this time performed on the Chinese soil by the loving Jesuit hands. The Chinese are the next in line to go berserk. Chinese history is inevitably bound to get both more ancient and more eventful, proportionally to the growing involvement of China in the world affairs. Chinese historians will keep on finding valid proof of prehistoric Chinese spaceflights until the Politburo orders them to shut up.

The Arabs:

Too bad. Islam with all its key figures is datable to XV-XVI century A. D. Arabic historians may find consolation in the crucial historical role of the Ottoman Empire in the XVI-XVII century. The trouble is that this empire was initially a Christian state, with Hagia Sophia identifiable as Temple of Solomon, according to Fomenko! We can only guess if the acquisition of Alexander the Great (a Macedonian and a Christian) as the founder of the Muslim World Empire will make Fomenko's theories more acceptable to the Arabic mainstream. He certainly does not spare any holy cows at all, claiming The Stone of Qa'Aba in Mecca to contain the lost Arch of the Covenant.

The Divinity:

Despite of reiterated statement that his theory is all about chronology and not Religion, Fomenko stirs up a whole condominium of wasp nests. His collection of anathemas, fatwa, and other condemnations from all parties concerned is already considerable. Little wonder, considering that the history of religions à la Fomenko looks as follows: the pre-Christian period (before the XI century and JC), Bacchic Christianity (XI-XII century, before and after JC), JC Christianity (XII-XVI century) and its subsequent mutations into Orthodox Christianity, the Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, and so on.

According to Fomenko we know strictly NOTHING about the events that predate the X century A. D.

St Augustin was prescient when he spoke unto us: "be wary of mathematicians, particularly when they speak the truth."

4 out of 5 stars Something of a disappointment.......2005-09-09

After having read the first volume of this expected series of 7 volumes I was triggered by the thesis of these authors that ancient Greek and Roman history did in fact take place in the Middle Ages. So I started studying medieval history of the Middle East - also known as Islamic history - to find out if the opponents of the ancient Greeks and Romans - the Acheamenid Persians, Sassanids, Scythians, Egyptians, etc. - also have their duplicates in medieval history. My search was disappointing: none of the many medieval Islamic dynasties seemed to correspond to the ancient middle eastern rulers.

However, I did find a close correspondence between Herodotus' Persian kings and medieval events:

- the defeat and capture of an Anatolian king - the Lydian Croesus - by the Persian conqueror Cyrus is identical to the defeat and capture of another Anatolian king - sultan Bayezid - by the Asian/Mongol conqueror Tamerlane;
- the Persian conquest of Egypt by the cruel tyrant Cambyses reds almost exactly as the Ottoman conquest of Egypt by Selim the Grim (note the nickname!);
- Darius the Lawgiver of the Persian Empire looks very much alike to Sulayman the Magnificent, the Lawgiver in Islamic history;
- Xerxes, whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by the Greeks at the naval battle of Salamis, looks like Selim II (the Sot) whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by a Spanish-Italian alliance at the naval battle of Lepanto.

I should have expected Fomenko et al. to arrive at similar conclusions, however, they claim that the Persian kings are the alter egos of the Angevin kings of Sicily whose biographies do not contain the exploits of the Persian kings.

The similiarities I indicate lead to the conclusion that Herodotus must have written his Histories at the close of the 16th century. But this is extremely late, given that Herodotus is "the Father of History", so therefore all other "ancient" histories must have been fabricated even later. Yet, the founders of modern chronology - Scaliger and Petavius - laid their foundations also at the close of the 16th century and had the full corpus of ancient histories already at their disposal.

It seems to me that Fomenko has to address these inconsistencies, maybe in the forthcoming 5 volumes?

Another critique of their book is that the correspondencies between different rulers are often based on a superficial comparison of the biographies; upon a more thorough comparison many details appear that do not correspond at all.

Finally, the authors rely heavily on the works of Gregorovius (1821-1891!!) - his medieval histories of Rome and Athens - as the source of medieval history; these works are - at least in the West - hoplessly outdated and have been superceded by more up-to-date works (for instance, Julius Norwich's trilogy on Byzantine history is not even cited).

5 out of 5 stars Romulus courts Helen, Paris founds Rome, Moses goes to Troy.........2005-07-30

If you agree with Fomenko that Roman chronology is basically the foundation of the entire edifice of global chronology; you would also certainly agree that despite its numerous gaps and inconsistencies, Roman history is the best-documented field of ancient history, and thus a reference scale. But how well is the actual date of the Eternal City's foundation known?

Firstly, Rome is supposed to have been founded by the Trojans who had to flee after the fall of Troy. Some claim Rome to have been founded by Aeneas and Ulysses shortly after Troy had fallen; others are of the opinion that there was an entire dynasty that ruled for 500 years between the fall of Troy and the foundation of Rome.

Well, that's just an innocent 500 years long misunderstanding compared with what heretic Fomenko says, asserts, proves in his second volume: Second Roman Empire, Third Roman Empire, Biblical Kingdom of Israel, Biblical Kingdom of Judah, Holy Roman Empire are stories about basically same events, written from different points of view at different times. The underlying events have actually taken place during xii-xv cy. These histories have been written and perfected by multitude of highly talented humanist and clerical writers of xiii-xvi cy disguised as "ancients" with glorious names like Homer, Pluto, Thucydides etc..Chronology 2.0 beta..

When it comes to the Ten Commandments, many theologians and spiritual leaders agree: the classic golden rules remain the best guiding principles available. Syndicated radio psychologist Dr. Laura Schlessinger utilizes these sacred Commandments to speak from her favorite pulpit of "do the right thing" therapy. Fans of Dr. Laura delight in her uncanny skill for zeroing in on the moral indiscretions and confusion at the core of most people's problems. With the Ten Commandments to back her up, Dr. Laura offers readers a day-to-day context for making healthy, loving, and morally correct choices. (So hopefully they can avoid the emotional pickles that her call-in guests frequently find themselves in.)

The esteemed Rabbi Stewart Vogel is the cowriter. As a result, the narrative fluctuates between real-life moral struggles (often based on people who've called into Dr. Laura's show) and biblical quotations that lead into intelligent, brief sermons. Readers who hunger for a clearer understanding of how the Ten Commandments can be applied to modern life will certainly be satisfied. Topics include "You Can't Ship God by UPS," "Which Vows Hold Water," "Honor Your Parents ... or Else," "Teachers Are Not Pets," and "Holy and Unholy Sex." --Gail Hudson

Book Description

The Ten Commandments are the first direct communication between a people and God. Designed to elevate our lives above mere frantic, animal existence to the sublime levels humanity is capable or experiencing, they are the blueprint of God's expectations of us and His plan for a meaningful, just, loving, and holy life. Each commandment asserts a principle, and each principle is a moral focal point for real-life issues relating to God, family, sex, work, charity, property, speech, and thought. Written in collaboration with Rabbi Stewart Vogel, The Ten Commandments incorporates lively discussion of the Bible and the Judeo-Christian values derived from it. Filled with passion, emotion, and profound insights, it will move, enlighten, inspire, entertain, and educate you on the meaning each commandment has in our daily lives today:

  1. I am the Lord, your God, Who has taken you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.

  2. You shall not recognize the gods of others in My presence.

  3. You shall not take the Name of the Lord., your God, in vain.

  4. Remember the Sabbath day and sanctify it.

  5. Honor your Father and your Mother.

  6. You shall not murder.

  7. You shall not commit adultery.

  8. You shall not steal.

  9. You shall not bear false witness against your fellow.

  10. You shall not covet.

5 out of 5 stars Good insight to the 10 Commandments (not 10 Suggestions).......2006-12-31

First of all, I should state that I am a Christian, so certainly there were going to be some areas that I disagreed with the conclusions of two orthodox Jews, including a rabbi. (I am friends with a rabbi from the conservative branch, and we think alike in many different ways despite the fact that we disagree on many issues of theology.) But except for the additional analysis that could have been given from the Christian New Testament, there's not much more I could add to what the authors had to say here. Dr. Laura and the rabbi challenged me personally in several ways that were refreshing. They had good insight into thinking that would challenge anyone who wants to, as Dr. Laura states, "do the right thing." It's not always easy, but following the moral will of God is what He intends if we hope to have a complete and fulfilling life. I think it's pretty clear that, despite theological differences that people from different religions might have, we can pretty much see here how morals come from a source outside ourselves (conscience) or society. It could have only come from God Himself. Without these standards, anything goes. I believe the position advocated by Dr. Laura and the rabbi makes much more sense than anything the atheist or secular humanist has to offer. It's an easy-to-read book and is worth the time and effort to pick it up.

2 out of 5 stars A few questions for Dr Laura.......2005-11-30

[The following is from a funny email that's been circulating since May 2000, attributed to "Kent Ashcraft"]

Dear Dr Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as a many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. ..... End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them.

1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19-24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

6. Eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10. Is it a lesser abomination than homosexuality? I don't agree. Can you settle this?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev.24:10-16). Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted disciple and adoring fan.

I have enjoyed Dr. Laura a lot on the radio. Most of the time I completely agree on her perspective on life issues.

But I think she missed the goal with this book. It is very superficial and shallow. It seems written in a haste, just to meet a publishers deadline.

It is full of stories from her listeners that many times just fill page after page, often with hardly any connection to the principle illustrated.

Not deep theology, but pop thinking that left me hungry for more depth.

I will continue to listen Dr. Laura on the radio and considering her books for future purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Fox's Masterpiece.......2006-11-04

This book is the most direct and clear window into the type of Christian Ideology that crosses all boarders. Historically, it describes excactly who Moses was, the education of the elite Egyptians and who the Wandering Jews were and what they knew and didn't know. How these cultures merged thru Moses and begot the 10 commandments becomes clear, both historically and spiritually. I think any spiritual seeker, or student of Mid Eastern Studies should educate themselves with this book. It gave me a new perspective on the Bible itself.

1 out of 5 stars Another Trojan Horse.......2006-04-14

Christians beware! This book hides dangerous cultic teachings behind the so called spiritual insights from the Ten Commandments. This book gives a cultic (even satanic) twist to the Decalogue (ie. evil can masquerade as an angel of light). It is indeed a deceptive Trojan horse filled with "Christian Science" heresies.

According to Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, universally known as Christian Science, Jesus could not die for Man's sins, because Mankind never sinned; Christ did not really die on the cross therefore He resurrected from non-death. Christian Science also declares that the Scriptures cannot properly be interpreted in a literal way, and thus, the truth of scripture must be spiritually discerned before its message can be applied to our lives.

Therefore, this book is hiding harmful non-Christian (new thought / new age style) metaphysics and psychic interpretations behind the precepts of the Ten Commandments. Moreover, Fox here promotes a salvation by works and positive thinking that is foreign to the Bible.

For those who wrote positive reviews of this book I want to say that Christianity is not about spirits seeking and deep trances, but it is all about the finding of the only Spirit of God, deep thankfulness in sincere meditation on the Gospel of the Cross, and above all, a relationship with God through His resurrected Son, Jesus Christ who died for our sins, so that we can be saved by the grace of God through faith alone.

Emmet Fox's books can indeed change your life but in a wrong direction. The teachings and interpretations of the Christian Science are not at all Christian and are also foreign to Judaism. This cult resembles more eastern mysticism rather than Judeo-Christian doctrines. Also this is not at all science.

I am amazed by how its people perceive the teachings of Christian science as being enlightened and how they see themselves as being thinkers. This is complete ignorance. These people do not even know how to think, much less how to think critically. They are ignorant about the doctrines of the Bible, ignorant of theological, cultural exegesis, ignorant of historical / textual criticism, and ignorant about real, genuine science.

The religion of (non)Christian (non)science is theologically, philosophically, Biblically and scientifically false; its roads end in eternal damnation.

4 out of 5 stars The ten commandments metaphysical distinguishing character.......2005-10-30

"The ten commandments at their face value are true and valid, but that is only the beginning. If people are going to get anywhere, if they are going to escape from the continuous strife and struggle of life, they must have something more."
Emmet Fox

Versions of the Decalogue:
The many different versions of the Ten Commandments, we first encounter in Exodus 20, this is probably the most recited form in Judaism. The Monotheistic God of Moses, in the first two of his commandments given in Chapter 20 of the Book of Exodus: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,..." Abbreviated narratives can be looked up in Exodus 34, while a partial version is found in Leviticus 19. The Deutronomical set of commandments is not only complete but exhorts Love of the Lord and your neighbor.

Revelation & Decalogue:
Forward to his marvelous book, "The Dawn of Conscience," J. H. Breasted wrote, "Where did I myself get the moral yardstick which I discovered this shortcoming in the Decalogue? When that experience began, it was a dark day for my inherited respect for the theological dogma of 'revelation.' I had more disquieting experience before me, when as a young Orientalist, I found that the Egyptians had possessed a standard of morals far superior to that of the Decalogue over a thousand years before the Decalogue was written"

OT Ethics Codes:
W. Janzen, in his paradigmatic approach of Old Testament Ethics, reports on the 'sampling nature of Old Testament Law codes', that; "The laws of the Old Testament are extant in collection that astonish the modern reader by their apparent incompleteness and haphazardness. They vary considerably in extent and coverage, none of them apparently intending to regulate fully any larger area of life, or life as a whole." To this Thomas Poundstone writes, in the Encyclopedia of Catholicism, "The most distinguishing character of the Ten commandments is their consistent use of apodictic form: they are brief, unconditional imperatives, usually prohibitions, complete in themselves without any explanation."

Fox's Mystical Decalogue:
Fox concealed the laws of inner psychology, within the ten commandments for those who were ready for them. From a spiritual perspective whatever we do unto others, we do unto ourselves. The commandments are in this way not intended to limit one's freedom and enjoyment of life, but to increase it through one's awareness of the universal principles, to refrain from hurting ourselves out of ignorance.
The commandments have their authority from the truth of the One Power, that this One Lord exerts as the Source of all our blessings directly from Him, without whom pain and suffering arise from disobeying this one fact.
Emmet Fox also explains Bible symbolism. "Getting out of Egypt" means getting out of sin and limitation, learning to contact the Infinite within Power and Wisdom, learning to express them in one's daily life.

Metaphysical Religion:
Emmet Fox brings out the deeper meanings in a mystical way, he has been a good student to the great allegorists of Alexandria, Philo and Oriogen, yet he applied an early psychological approach that was the same path of Freud before, and Assmann later on. Going beyond the obvious meaning of the ten commandments and bringing insight into different levels of meaning from physical to mystical, proclaiming that the commandments were intended by Mose, the learned Egyptian sage to bring to existence a mysical truth, for a deeper level of psychological inspiration: conscienceness.
Fox was just confident enough to express in a metaphoric way, that reveals the underlying meaning of the Exodus, naratives and terms. The marvelous account of Moses, given him the Ten Commandments written by the finger of God, was at the time, and still needed sought by those who concieve revelation in another way all together different from that of Fox and Breasted.

Emmet Fox:
Emmet Fox was born in Ireland but pursued his spiritual career in the USA. His father was a physician and member of Parliament, while Emmet graduated as electrical engineer. Discovering that he acquired healing gift, he studied New Thought. Soon, he went to the United States, and was selected to become the minister of NY's Church of the Healing Christ. Fox became widely popular, and was ordained in the Divine Science branch of New Thought. Emmet Fox lived to address some of the largest audiences ever gathered to hear his thoughts on the religious meaning of life. His books and pamphlets were estimated to have been read by many millions. The influence of Emmet Fox in the spread of New Thought ideas and emphases lies in his influence being read by ministers of all denominations.

Belated Review:
Emmet Fox represents his metaphysical insight of God and His presence, as a dynamic power which sets us free, heals us and redeem us to harmony. He thus reveals in this classic volume how an authentic understanding of ancient wisdom can guide us into fulfilling and peaceful lives. Fifty years later, his writings are still influential, yet this Amazon reviewer got it right, "Heavy into allegory and straight out of an Augustinian mindset, the reader will be presented with an alternate interpretation that is not quite as practical as the author believes it to be." A. J. Valasek
