3 out of 5 stars This book is not propaganda for the Mormon faith.......2007-08-24

I like the book; it is not a book of propaganda for the Mormon church. It talks about how some sucessful Mormon businessmen and CEO operate in accordance with the values taught by their faith. It is a useful addition to management literature. The book does not go into management theories and successful business models. It does not give you much empirical data based on surveys or business ratios. The focus of the book is on the moral values that make a difference in the lives of these individuals who make contributions to the company they work for, care for the employees, and have their self identity rooted in things (such as family, a desire to serve) other than wealth, fame, and status.

Yes, it make a lot of refernces to the Mormon faith. The author says it as he sees it. This book is good addition to the study of business ethics.

5 out of 5 stars Helps to Realign Priorities .......2007-08-10

This is one of the better business books I have every read. It is a light read, and goes quickly. As I read the book, I considered my relationship with my own family. My 3 year old son kept approaching me on Saturday afternoon wanting to "color" with him. Rather than blowing him off and saying "I'm too busy," I put my book down and shared 10 minutes with him doing something HE felt was important. The greatest message is that the only titles that matter in this life are "Husband" and "Father." Everything else is irrelevant.

Knowing one of the principle subjects of the book, I appreciate the power of the strong women in the lives of these successful businessmen. To be successful at home and in life, a strong marriage & united partnership is key. As the Book of Matthew states, "By their fruits ye shall know them." You can plainly see that with these great families profiled.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect read and excellent book to go by.......2007-07-03

Mormon or not the things that you learn from this book are wonderful. It is an easy read and very applicable skills and traits that anyone can use in their every day life.

I am a communication instructor at two New Jersey intitutions and found the book inspiring and helpful in gearing lectures to driven students looking to get ahead and network successfully. Great read!

5 out of 5 stars Very inspireing and uplifting!!!.......2007-05-07

I loved every minute of this book, it was hard to put it down. I have read it twice, and will re-read it many times in the future.
The ideals, morales, and leadership skills discussed in this book hold true for all who have dealings with their fellow man, in the business world or on a personal level.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why the LDS church wouldn't publish it........2006-02-25

I have always admired BH Robert's contributions to history. What I failed to realize was that he should have stuck to history and keep his private theories private. Why wouldn't the LDS church sponser his book? I had hoped for some interesting tidbits gleaned from his years of access to church records and journals. Maybe something the church didn't want to get out.

Naaa,, They just didn't want to be associated with some of his really stupid and undoctrinal theories. I was very dissappointed with the book.

4 out of 5 stars This is the readable version of the long-lost book........2002-02-02

This is one of two versions of Elder B. H. Roberts' masterwork of theology. The other edition being published by Brigham Young University Studies. I have both, so I will be comparing and contrasting them later in the review.

The story behind TWL is a little complex. Elder Roberts (1857-1933) was a prolific writer, theologian, thinker and a scrapper. Near the end of his life he produced a manuscript called "The Truth, The Way, The Life," which was to be a compact summation and extension of his theological thought. The manuscript was reviewed by a blue-ribbon committee, but was never published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints primarily for his advocacy of "pre-Adamites," and also speculation about God's progression in knowledge among other things. In the late 1960's, President Hugh B. Brown photocopied the manuscript and gave it to one of his grandsons, Edwin B. Firmage, with the instruction to preserve the book. Mr. Firmage donated the manuscript copy to the University of Utah, and then curator stand Larson decided to publish the book.

The copyright of the book, along with the three manuscripts of the book were owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, so it was thought that they could publish a joint version, but the talks broke down, so Larson published with Smith Research Associates, and BYU Studies published their own version, with photo-static reprints of the three manuscripts.

The book itself follows the outline set by the title: Truth, Way, Life. Elder Roberts begins with a dissertation on the truth, and then goes into cosmology, with then-current (1925) science. He relied heavily on Spencer's "First Principles" for much of his metaphysics. He then discusses the nature of humanity, the Intelligences described in Latter-day Saint theology. He has a section that surveys ancient religions, with special emphasis on the Hebrew Religion. He concluded the first section with a discussion of creation.

The second section focuses on the Way. It covers the creation of Man, the fall, and then the history of the earth from Adam to Christ. The second half of the second section is a lengthy elaboration of Christ's atonement. This is probably the best part of the whole book; since the Atonement is the heart of Christian doctrine.

The Life is the third part of the book., and this section focuses on the "Sermon on the Mount," and the Christian's character. It concludes with a chapter on celestial, or eternal marriage, which is peculiar to the Church of Jesus Christ.

This book is really a condensed version of Elder Robert's "Seventies Course in Theology," and frankly I prefer the "Seventies Course in theology" to this one-volume version simply because TWL lacks the depth and detail that "Seventies Course in Theology" has. Roberts covered more ground and looked into the implication of things Mormon better than he did in the TWL. The only advantage TWL has is that it is more streamlined, focused, and refined in many areas.

Looking over the book, I really wish that Elder Roberts has acquiesced on the Pre-Adamites, and Progressing God issues. Except for these one or two things (in addition to the outdated science and metaphysics), it is a good book, and the chapters on the Atonement (which are word for word from the "Seventies Course in Theology") are superb. In fact, I think that the controversial chapters-and the controversy itself-- have eclipsed what was good with the manuscript.

One thing that Elder Roberts missed was elucidation upon "Eternalism." He devoted a chapter to Eternalism in his "Seventies Course in theology," be he overlooked this rater fascinating concept in this book. This striking doctrine is unique to the theology of the Saints and deserves a place in this book.

Regarding the two editions, the Larson edition is, bar far, the more readable version of the two, and follows closer to the pattern Elder Roberts used in his "Seventies Course in Theology." Moreover, it is in soft back, so the book is cheaper. This edition has commentary by Leonard Arrington and Sterling McMurrin, two staunch Mormon intellectuals, and fans of Elder Robert's work. I would recommend this edition to anyone with a passing curiosity of the book, the subject or the man B. H. Roberts.

However, the BYU Studies version has the better commentary, with articles written by Truman Madsen, David Paulsen, Andrew Skinner, and James Allen. Plus, this edition has the better index and helps at the end of the book, with a summery of Joseph Fielding Smith's arguments against evolution and pre-Adamites. Plus, this edition has an extension to chapter 31, which chapter was read to the Quorum of the Twelve, which rounds out Roberts arguments for pre-Adamites. This edition is less readable, with many strikeouts and spelling corrections. These are absolutely unnecessary for the layman and get in the way of getting Robert's ideas. For the very curious, I recommend the BYU Studies edition.

This is a good book in certain areas, but both editions suffer from having too much useless information. I would suggest a streamlined, layman version that combines the best of both editions. It would have the Larsen edition's format, which follows the "Seventies Course in Theology" with the chapter outlines and introductions, and I would not have any strikeouts in the text, and use the Larson diagrams. Just edit it as you would a normal book. I would use the BYU Edition's chapter summery in the table of contents, use its better index, scripture citations, and not worry about the minor variant readings. Follow the Larsen's edition of having "A Modification of the Orthodox View" back in controversial Chapter 31, and integrate the variant introduction the BYU Edition has in the appendix into one introduction. Also have the additional material in the BYU Edition that was appended to Chapter 31 (p. 318-322) put in as an appendix to that chapter. I would also silently update the astronomical information to bring it in line with the twenty-first century.

Curiosity regarding Benedict's spiritual writings has sparked worldwide interest in these meditations and prayers that highlight the new pope's personal prayer life, as well as his vision for the future of the Church.

5 out of 5 stars Lent will never be the same.......2006-03-14

This is a new one for me, with amazing artwork and deep meditations. As a new read on an old topic this one really shook things up for me. It drew me in to the meditations and prayers in a new and intriguing ways.

5 out of 5 stars Prayerful and Powerful.......2006-03-03

This is a beautiful book in which Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) sets forth the Stations which he gave for Lent 2004 at the request of the late Pope John Paul the Great before the latter's death. Like all of Pope Benedict's writings, his message is clear and concrete and it is very easy to read and understand by everyone. Each station is accompanied by a thoughtful and prayerful meditation, as well as a beautiful picture depicting the particular Station of the Cross upon which to dwell as you pray the stations with the help of this book. The meditations are a true masterpiece of love by Il Papa, Il Grande Innamorato - Pope Benedict XVI.

5 out of 5 stars A sublimely beautiful book.......2006-02-01

This book is a feast for both body and soul. It is a book that has been carefully crafted,(from the feel of its pages to the extraordinary Stations of the Cross by Jan Toorop), to draw the reader to another place. The Stations are compelling, insistent on being looked at and thought about. There is a restrained lushness about the stations, the occasion of the passion is somber but there is an overriding sense that beauty walks with Jesus. One can almost say the Stations are modern icons. Within the meditations and prayers there are details of the larger station which are presented in thumbnail size.

Pope Benedict writes with simplicity and clarity. The entire book is an orchestrated prayer. What comes through is his deep love of God and mankind. In an achingly gentle style, he asks the reader to walk with the suffering Jesus. He encourages all to draw near Jesus no matter how broken and demoralized they are.
This book allows the reader, whether devout Christian or searcher for God, to have an experience of the transcendent.

I have already given two people this book as a gift. My hope is that Pauline Books and Media decides to publish a book devoted entirely to The Stations of Jan Toorop

    Book Description

"The Mill and the Cross" is a highly original approach to a single painting by Peter Bruegel the Elder - "the Way to Calvary" - to which the book is entirely devoted. But it also represents an innovative approach to the general emergence of Christian culture out of the patterns of Antiquity.

Bruegel's work tells two stories at the same time: on the one hand, it is a straightforward relation of Christ's Passion, in which Jesus appears, lost in a crowd of some 500 characters, carrying his cross from Jerusalem (enclosed in the circle of its walls) to Calvary (marked by the darker circle of the expectant crowd). But it also tells the story of the passion of Flanders in Bruegel's day, since Christ is here escorted to Golgotha by the red-uniformed mercenary police of the king of Spain who was then imposing a fierce repression on Bruegel's native land.

Gibson also takes a close look at the windmill, oddly perched atop a pointed rock. It is, he argues, Bruegel's depiction of the "cosmic mill" which, in the tradition of Antiquity, was thought to grind the fates of men and nations.

The theme of the Precession of the Equinoxes is invoked to explain the deeply rooted tradition of the passing of the ages, the age of the ram giving way, in Jesus' day, to the age of the Fish, to which Christian tradition tied Christ himself.

This allows Gibson to take an innovative look at the way myth commands our representations of the world and how we, today, at another "turning of the world", may look back on the age out of which we are already moving.

More than an art book, it is a book about how we can come to terms with our own culture.

    Book Description

ChristHeart is a book of meditations that are based on thirty-four (34) events or teachings from the Life of Jesus Christ. The reader is invited to enter more fully into the life of the human Jesus and to identify with the feelings and thoughts of Christ as he carried out his earthly ministry. Designed to facilitate contemplative prayer, the author encourages readers to imagine the responses of Jesus as he dealt with conflict, entered into friendship with the disciples and others, healed and taught people about a vital personal love relationship with God. The reader is then given the opportunity to enter into the experiences of Jesus by reading a selected scripture from the Gospels, and one of the meditations, and then, by using his imagination, to picture the scene and identify with the feelings and thoughts of Jesus in that particular scene.

    Book Description

Two thousand years after the fact, new light is shed on Christ's hidden life as an initiate in the mystical society of the Essene Brotherhood. In the first English-language edition of the European bestseller, Anne and Daniel Meurois-Givaudan describe the way of life in the Essene communities of first-century Palestine. Through direct revelation, the authors received--over a two-year period--detailed knowledge of the Essene teachings and their role in preparing Christ for his mission. At once unpretentious and astonishing, this beautifully written and evocative story lucidly recreates the life and personality of Christ and his role in the spiritual development of humankind.

Since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, questions continue to arise as to the identity of the Essenes and what role they might have played in the life of Jesus. This account complements the gospels, clarifying and enlarging upon mysterious parts of the record--including Christ's mystical and metaphysical teachings of Essene techniques for spiritual advancement. The authors’ retelling of the Passion of Christ and its aftermath is an extraordinary account that may forever reshape our understanding of these biblical events.

    5 out of 5 stars More Than a Novel.......2006-05-14

I thought this book finally gave me a real sense of who Master Jesus was and how he related to his disciples. The passages where Jesus Christ spoke are poetic and truly sound like they come from the heart. This book has taken a place in my permanent collection so that I can read the inspiring passages again.

5 out of 5 stars Informative as Well as Fascinating......................2005-08-14

This book was a surprise to me. I wasn't sure I would like it, but it was so interesting I devoured it quickly. I learned alot, especially since I have never heard of the Essenes until this book !!! I absolutely recommend it, particularly if you are interested in the early days of Jesus' life and the story of the Essenes. Very very interesting !

3 out of 5 stars Interesting read, but falls a bit short.......2004-07-13

I enjoyed reading this book, but I was a bit disappointed that more wasn't written about Jesus and his family. It is written here that the Master's mother was of some high order, but it doesn't go into further detail. There is also not much mention of his father. They also discuss many prayers and meditations of the Essenes, learned at the KRML, but don't go very far to describe any of them.
All in all- a good read that leaves me wanting to read more.

    1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2002-04-22

Another supposed recollection of the life of Christ based on the Akashic records. This book has very little about the philosophy of the Essenes and even less about the life of Christ. Based on the little amount of the speaking of Christ in this book, the title is very misleading. It is really a fictional account of a boy who is trained in the ways of the Essenes and later becomes a disciple of Christ. While there is some good spiritual imagery painted from time to time for the most part the book is drab and unconvincing.

Little, if anything, of the knowledge held by the Essenes has survived till today. It is even in doubt how much, if any, contact Jesus has with the Essenes. Slightly (only slightly) more realistic are the works of Edmond Bordeaux Szekely. More convincing accounts of Christs life based on Akashic records are found in The Aquarian Gospel Of Jesus The Christ by Levi H. Dowling.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting and Thought provoking.......2002-03-21

I found this to be an interesting and thought provoking book. However, I think the reviewers of this book overdid it. I didn't find this book to be the end all of information about Christ and his life. I didn't find this book to be the most spiritually provoking book. It is just that- a very interesting and thought provoking book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Look At The Way Master Jesus Did Evangelism.......2004-09-15

I've been a big fan of Robert E. Coleman ever since I read his classic book The Master Plan of Evangelism back in the 70's. Therefore I was very interested in reading The Master's Way of Personal Evangelism when I saw it on Amazon.com. In a simple, but effective way, this book brings our attention to the attitudes and methods Jesus used to persuade and convince people to follow him. Episodes from life and ministry of Jesus Christ are examined and lay the foundation for any student of personal evangelism. I've used Master's Way of Personal Evangelism with undergraduate college students, graduate and with lay people and have found it an effective compendium to The Master Plan of Evangelism. Jesus said we should learn from Him (Matthew 11:29) The Master's Way of Personal Evangelism would be a good place to start.

      4 out of 5 stars True story??.......2006-12-22

This is a most unusual book. Presented as a non-fiction work, the author purports to have been selected, apparently by Jesus (yes, THE Jesus), to present us with new information on the 1st century earthly life of Jesus . . . or Yehoshua as he was known in that time and culture.

Author Ronald Way describes that he was given a vision such that he recounts first hand, through the eyes of a first century man named Asher Ben Ammi, what it was like to walk and talk with Jesus and his followers in the time surrounding the infamous crucifixion. Way also claims to have been face to face with Jesus at the time that he was struck by a blinding light and selected for this task.

For the modern day follower of Jesus (a "Christian") this is a most spellbinding tale of the greatest interest. A new extra-biblical look at what it was like to sit and talk with Jesus. What was he like at a "party"? What were the personalities and politics among the disciples?

I have some negative observations. I noted a couple of contradictions between what I interpret as biblical truth, and events that Way described. These alone would have raised doubts regarding the credulity of this book. More significantly, the Bible specifically warns regarding accepting extra-biblical revelation. Without getting into theological discourse I'll just have to say that, unfortunately, I cannot accept Way's story as non-fiction. I wish I could. It was engaging reading and stirred the imagination. Perhaps one day I'll learn that Ronald Way is telling the truth. I hope so.

      5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!.......2007-08-08

I appreciate Gordon B. Hinckley's no-nonsense (and simple) way of tackling moral issues and codes of conduct. Can one's conduct be forever impacted by living simple principles? Yes. Does that mean adopting the list of "BEs" Gordon B. Hinckley presents as one's personal code of conduct eliminate all of life's problems? No. I don't think that argument was made. I am glad that there are still individuals who reject the idea that codes of conduct don't have a place in modern society. Our world would be far better off if the "BEs" were universally adopted as the way to be.

I am dismayed that there are even a few negative reviews of this book. One reviewer called its contents "fluff." That comment was very telling. I suppose, like everything else in life, one receives what one is ready to to receive.

5 out of 5 stars I can so BE this person.......2007-07-12

What a wonderful book that helps all persons. It has no religious walls or persecutions, it is just a way to fulfill your living. I loved this book and will buy it for all of nieces and nephews. They should be GENERATION "BE"!

5 out of 5 stars Less is More!.......2005-07-04

I believe that the purpose of this book is to break the bad habbits that every single christian had adoptded and the negative infuences we've been absorving.

I think that this book was made simple, so that it would be very easy to read, understand, use and remember the "BE's".

It does not anti with anything, it's just conservative with what is believed to be true!

It's inspiring that would help anyone who reads to envision grabbing your dreams and on how lucky we are to be in this generation with full of opportunities.

Every chapter gives wisdom WHY do we have to BE; Grateful, Smart, Involve, Clean, True, Positive, Humble, Still and Prayerful.

      1 out of 5 stars over-rated.......2004-05-22

Mr. Hinckley certainly seems like a nice man, but the book is pure fluff. Nothing of substance is said, it contains mostly trivial banalities.

3 out of 5 stars Advice across generations.......2004-02-13

"Way to Be!: Nine Ways to Be Happy and Make Something of Your Life" is by Gordon B. Hinckley and has a foreword by Steve Young. This is basically an advice book directed towards young people. The text is structured around 9 "Be's": Be Grateful, Smart, Involved, Clean, True, Positive, Humble, Still, and Prayerful.

Although Hinckley has risen to the position of President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (i.e. the Mormon church), the book has virtually no Mormon-specific content. Nevertheless, the book does have a Christian-specific orientation, so while Hinckley seems to go beyond the Mormon community to embrace a Catholic and Protestant Christian readership, non-Christians may find some of the book's content to be a subtle barrier.

Religious orientation aside, the book does include commonsense advice. I found the text most interesting when Hinckley, who was born in 1910, talks about his early life. He paints a vivid and appealing portrait of his boyhood and young manhood in the early 20th century.

Yes, at times Hinckley sounds grouchy and ranting, and some of his advice seems vague and disconnected with contemporary events. But overall the book is enjoyable and interesting--at times it's genuinely inspiring.
