In 2019, humanity finally finds proof of extraterrestrial life when a listening post in Puerto Rico picks up exquisite singing from a planet which will come to be known as Rakhat. While United Nations diplomats endlessly debate a possible first contact mission, the Society of Jesus quietly organizes an eight-person scientific expedition of its own. What the Jesuits find is a world so beyond comprehension that it will lead them to question the meaning of being "human." When the lone survivor of the expedition, Emilio Sandoz, returns to Earth in 2059, he will try to explain what went wrong... Words like "provocative" and "compelling" will come to mind as you read this shocking novel about first contact with a race that creates music akin to both poetry and prayer.

--USA Today

"AN EXPERIENCE NOT TO BE MISSED . . . If you have to send a group of people to a newly discovered planet to contact a totally unknown species, whom would you choose? How about four Jesuit priests, a young astronomer, a physician, her engineer husband, and a child prostitute-turned-computer-expert? That's who Mary Doria Russell sends in her new novel, The Sparrow. This motley combination of agnostics, true believers, and misfits becomes the first to explore the Alpha Centuri world of Rakhat with both enlightening and disastrous results. . . . Vivid and engaging . . . An incredible novel."

1 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A bad book by a mundane religiously focused writer trying to be a science fiction writer, and failing, in general. Obvious, tedious, and worse than mediocre. This sort of thing has been handled many times before to considerably better effect. The religious preaching is so overt it causes you to grit your teeth and groan.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating and provocative.......2007-08-08

A fascinating and wholly original imagining of first contact with extraterrestrial life. A suspense story that builds patiently, dropping tantalizing crumbs along the way. Most profoundly, a meditation on the hard questions about God's involvement in our daily affairs, and his responsibility for evil in the universe.

I'm surprised to read so much praise for Doria Russel's characters, as they are the only aspect of the novel that keeps me from giving 'The Sparrow' a five-star rating. I found secondary characters like Voelker, Anne and Supaari to be more believable and fully imagined than the protaganist Emilio Sandoz, and his cardboard attraction Sofia. That aside, this is a powerful novel you will not soon forget.

2 out of 5 stars Haunting and horrifying.......2007-08-05

My reaction to this book was much the same as "Reader's." The book is beautifully written, and the author crafted characters about whom a reader can truly care. I was mesmerized by a tale so wonderfully and deeply original, and I could not put the book down. But as the story progressed toward its ending, it changed into something sinister -- filled with shocking images and events. A bright promise and a fantastic read turned into a tale of unimaginable savagery. It was as though two different authors had written the story. Like "Reader, "I could not wait to physically separate myself from this book. My father taught me a deep respect of the written word, but this novel sickened me so much I was actually compelled to throw this book away. My apolgies to the author, but she has the talent to do better than to taint her work with graphic horror and sadism.

1 out of 5 stars Embarrassingly bad.......2007-07-13

A sophomoric concept hamfistedly executed, with a cast of characters you just keep hoping will die already. Not remotely good enough to take itself as seriously as it does.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-28

I wouldn't hesitate to suggest this to anyone. It's themes are universal and it touches them all well.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Effective leadership is crucial to building organizations with staying power. In Heroic Leadership, author Chris Lowney examines organizational principles derived from the history and teachings of the Jesuits and applies them to modern corporate culture. Based on the four core values of self-awareness, ingenuity, love, and heroism, this book identifies practices that sixteenth century priests developed to foster strong leaders and achieve longevity.

A Jesuit seminarian turned investment banker, Lowney recognized a tremendous lack of able leaders throughout his seventeen years of multinational management experience. By modeling the Jesuits' success, Lowney shares methods for molding innovative, ambitious leaders in the modern corporate environment.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-01-11

A different approach on leadership than the traditional self-help books written by sports coaches, military people or other "gurus".

5 out of 5 stars An Unlikely Source for Leadership Insights.......2006-10-31

My daughter is now a freshman at St. Louis University (a Jesuit school) and this book was her summer reading assignment. I was drawn to the book's title since I never would have characterized the Jesuits as a 450 year old company! Lowney's insights are compelling and the stories of the early Jesuit leaders are fascinating as an albeit biased glimpse of the early Catholic Church during the time of the Reformation. I kept waiting for Lowney to describe how he applied his learnings from the Jesuit seminary to his successful career at a major investment firm, but he does not. Perhaps he is applying the Jesuit philosophy of letting us figure that out! An excellent and thought-provoking guide to leadership in an age where ethics is sorely lacking...

5 out of 5 stars Unlike any business leadership book you've read.......2006-08-18

For anyone who has been fortunate enough to have a Jesuit education or anyone who is just interested in what makes these guys tick, this book does a very good job of explaining the history behind the success of Jesuits. By historical example and modern stories, the author takes a step by step approach to applying the methods of the Jesuits to everyday leadership. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great on Several Levels.......2006-06-13

This book is a wonderful combination of Christian worldview thinking and leadership theory and practice. Where most works on leadership are a string of the latest findings and a set of statistical reviews, this work delves deeply into the lives as well as the practices of the Jesuits.

The many vignettes of Jesuits through the centuries and around the world were especially enlightening. Each story traced the successes and failures of several individuals and their ventures, and mapped them well onto the core principles of the Jesuit "company."

Of particular interest to me was the emphasis on "self-awareness." For the Jesuits this was not only a personal inventory of traits and talents, but of spiritual depth and maturity as well. Many readers of spiritual growth works will find this book exciting as the spiritual exercises of the Jesuits are tied directly to their world-changing influence. As mature Christian theology will tell us, growing deeper in our faith and walk with God changes our daily lives; spiritual discipline is not an esoteric exercise for purely personal gain.

The Jesuit backdrop for this book should not deter readers looking for good works on leadership and business theory. The author does not press Christianity to a point that might make others uncomfortable. There is a lot to glean from this work and from the Jesuits when it comes to leadership and good business practice-Heroic Leadership expresses it well and, in this reader's opinion, convincingly.

5 out of 5 stars REVIEW OF MY JESUIT EDUCATION.......2005-09-29

I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE WRITER'S DEPTH OF THE HISTORY OF THE"COMPANY". I WISH I COULD HAVE READ THIS BOOK WHILE I WAS ATTENDING BOSTON COLLEGE , A JESUIT UNIVERSITY , SOME 44 YEARS AGO. I AM SURE IT WOULD HAVE MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN MANY OF THE EVENTS OF MY LIFE. NOW, I HAVE THE CHANCE TO SEE HOW I CAN FOLLOW THE TEACHINGS OF THE JESUITS IN MY LATER YEARS.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Humility and kindness abound!.......2007-09-16

I was looking for this book as I had given my copy away. Luckily, Amazon had it! It is a place that I can 'travel' that offers kindness and hope. Hearts on Fire fulfills me with the strength to stay fully present to others.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant distillation of Ignatian Spirituality.......2007-06-30

It is seldom that I actually like a book of prayers, rarer still that I enthuse, and only once or twice ever would I actually rave about such a work to my friends. I don't normally think prayer books help; they are after all someone else's prayer and I see prayer as an intensely personal thing that cannot be attained 'second hand'.

Thats probably why, even before joining the Jesuits, I came to appreciate Ignatian Spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola. For the Exercises [often called SpEx in shorthand by Ignatian retreat directors) are not prayers you say specifically but guidelines on how to do the prayer yourself. Even here, in Harter's book, this is clearly the purpose...

In effect, Harter brings us meditations on the four Weeks of the SpEx that clearly serve to aid us in our prayer. We read these meditations - from Ignatius, Xavier, Rahner, Teilhard,Hopkins et al - not for themselves [though the glorious quality of their language makes it aesthetically worthwhile even without praying]but for how they might ignite in our hearts (to use the title's metaphor) our own spiritual encounter with God.

Of course it is not the same as making the full Spiritual Exercises (30 days) or the SpEx in Daily Life (8 months to a year, with 1hour of prayer per day) or even doing an 8-day Ignatian retreat. Though it is certainly a book one could take on such retreats (as, in fact, I did recently). The beauty of this little book is that it can be used by pretty much anyone, anywhere. One hopes, as I am sure Fr Harter hopes, that it will also draw more people to encounter God through the Spiritual Exercises.

5 out of 5 stars Way to pray!!!.......2007-05-13

If you have an interest or backgorund in the spirtuality of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, you will find this book to be a rich treasure. From Ignatius himself, to Jesuits still serving today, you will discover wise and challenging prayers and poems, each pertaining to specific movements of the Spiritual Exercises. Additonally, appropriate scriptures are suggested for praying the Exercises. If you know nothing about Ignatius or the Jesuits, you will also find this a rich source of meaningful prayer and reflection. I regularly give these booklets as gifts to people seeking good resources for prayer. A special book in deed!

5 out of 5 stars It's like reading poetry........2007-05-09

Book Description

The story of one young man's remarkable journey from corporate America to the Society of Jesus. James Martin leads you from his Catholic childhood through his success and ultimate dissatisfaction with the business world, to his novitiate and profession of vows as a Jesuit.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars read this book.......2006-11-17

If you are thinking of a religious vocation, this is the book for you. James Martin (Society of Jesus) was fresh out of college, making big bucks at GE, and living a party life in NYC when he realized how empty it all was. He needed something more in his life and, to the shock of his family and co-workers, entered the Society of Jesus.

The memoir covers Martin's college years, his job at GE, his enterance into the Jesuit order, as well as his novitiate in Boston and Jamaica. During these two years, Martin is challenged to live the life Christ is calling him to live. The memior ends with First Vows at a church in Boston, after which Martin flies to Chicago where he'll begin philosophy studies (the second stage of Jesuit formation).

This was an exciting book to read. I found myself in Martin's shoes, as I have at times thought of becoming a priest. But even if you're a career person, and aren't interested in religious life, read this book anyway--it's a great place to see G-d at work. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A Modern Vocation Story.......2006-07-01

When considering a vocation, this book might provide a little relief to those who hear that discouraging little voice whispering, "You're not holy enough." For that reason, I think this book could serve as a thoughtful gift to someone in the process of discernment.

The story of Fr. Martin hits on some pretty interesting topics. For example: his first career as a corporate man who makes good money, but is probably too overworked to enjoy it. Also, it's interesting to see those around him (e.g. friends, co-workers, etc) react to his discernment process and entrance into the Society of Jesus as a seminarian.

The real story, though, is Fr. Martin's own reflections on the meaning of his journey to the priesthood, and the comparisons to his life "in the world."

Personally, I identified (sadly) with his story of someone who "grew up" as a Catholic, and yet reached adulthood without a deep understanding of the Catholic Faith, its teachings or its traditions. Fr. Martin confronted his religious illiteracy, even if he felt silly asking what might have been seen as simple questions.

Possible Negatives

Fr. Martin is a "down-to-earth" person who lives in the real world. He is someone that is easy to identify with. He's a sinner--just like the rest of us. On the other hand, seeing his "warts," I sometimes felt that there was an ambiguous message about how to deal with our own imperfections. For example, should we see these imperfections and say, "that's just who I am"? Or, should we follow the Gospel message of Our Lord, to "Be Perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect"? (Matt 5:48)

Also, Fr. Martin clearly lived the Gospel message to serve those who are in need. I don't mean to belittle these good works which are worthy of imitation; but, sometimes I fear that people make temporal good works the primary goal of religion, instead of the salvation of souls.

Overall, I recommend Fr. Martin's enjoyable, well-written vocation story.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book by Martin!!.......2006-05-07

I have not been disappointed yet by the work of James Martin, SJ. I appreciate the honesty of his experience. I believe that the issues he presents in this book that surround religious formation are well written. I do share the opinion of one customer reviewer on Amazon.com who presents a concern about Martin's lack of transparency on the issue of sexuality and the vow of celibacy. HOWEVER, having perhaps a unique insight into religious life from my own experiences in formation, I can attest to the fact that the vows of poverty and obedience are much more divisive in community life than celibacy - and that celibacy is more often the heated issue of those outside religious communities looking inward with curiosity.

I have shared this book with a number of other religious and lay people alike with the recommendation that this is another well-written James Martin book that is candid, humorous and honest.

You will not be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Great story........2003-07-28

Martin's personal journey of faith, which eventually led him into the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), is quite a story. He was a young successful business man rising quickly through the corporate ranks at General Electric. But the "unseen hook" brought him to change dramatically - literally from riches to poverty. The reader gets a sense of Martin's sincerity as they journey with him through his younger years in business, and eventually, his experience as a Jesuit novice.
Though the story itself is powerful, I rated this book with only three stars because I found Martin's prose to be lacking at some points in the story. Perhaps I'm being harsh; forgive me.
I recommend this book to any reader who wishes to understand the Catholic preisthood better, especially those young men considering joining the Jesuits.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2002-02-06

James Martin's book is just the right thing for anyone with an interest in the contemporary Catholic Church. It's especially helpful for those thinking of joining a religious order or becoming a priest--or those who are interested in why a person would make such a commitment in this day and age. Martin's writing style makes this a personal and provocative read. One of the reviewers on the back cover says Martin is a Thomas Merton for this time--perhaps, but in his own style. I'd highly recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in religion.

5 out of 5 stars Great prayer/scripture boook.......2007-02-10

This is the second year I buy this book. It has a great prayer format and incorporates scripture into the same. I have also purchased it for my nephew as a confirmation present; it is a great book for teaching the discipline of prayer. I keep mine in the car, which is my quiet and sacred space. This book will help you take a moment to prayer anywhere at any time. It is flexible enough to incorporate your own form of prayer but structured enough to get you in the mindset and considering different spiritual themes. If you fall asleep during prayer, get distracted or just plain don't pray this book will help, the commitment is about five minutes but the feeling lasts all day.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Prayer Guide.......2007-02-04

[...] is an excellent resource for Catholic prayer and spirituality. Started by Alan McGuckian and Peter Scally, two Irish Jesuits, the site offers prayer suggestions based on the daily Mass scriptures used in the Catholic Church and the basic methods of Ignatian prayer. The site also offers seasonal retreats and newsletters to better help people pray. People can sign up to receive newsletters, participate in online retreats, and share feedback. People can also log on to use the daily prayers, but for those of us who do not like sitting at a computer to pray, there is a companion volume: SACRED SPACE THE PRAYER VOLUME 2007.

The book is set up in an easy to use format. It follows the liturgical calendar and begins with a monthly reflection. For each week there are reflection questions that vary from week to week to help the person focus on scripture and God's movement in his/her life. The method is straightforward and easy to use. First the person reminds him/herself that prayer is being in the presence of God and clears the mind. Second, the person asks for God's help in the time of prayer, remembering that while prayer is a free act, it is only fruitful with God's help. Third, we bring ourselves to prayer, bringing our thoughts, feelings, moods, etc. to prayer and sharing them with God. The fourth step involves reading the scripture for the day, the fifth is reflection and conversation with God about the scripture. The prayer ends with the sixth and final step, praising and thanking God.

SACRED SPACE is almost the perfect guide for personal prayer. Since it uses the daily Mass gospels, it is prayer that unites members of the Church throughout the world (in general the same readings are used throughout the world but on occasion there will be readings for feast celebrated in Ireland such as St. Brigid's Day on Feb 1st). It is easy to use so a person beginning a prayer routine will not be intimidated yet since it is based on God's word through the scriptures, it is both simple and sophisticated. It is a method that can be done in a rather short period of time yet can easily be extended to longer periods. It's also a method that can be used at any time of the day. It could easily be something that begins the day (probably the ideal way to use the book), be a refresher for midday, or a good way to conclude the day.

P.S.: For people who have to prepare a homily for daily Mass and run out of ideas, the reflection questions in the book can be a wonderful way to sound new and fresh, and since it stems from prayer and reflection, it is what a homily is supposed to be.

5 out of 5 stars Sacred Space truly facilitates prayer and reflection. .......2007-01-10

This is a wonderful way to draw youself into a spirit of prayer and reflection. There is a scripture reading for each day and then some comments or questions that can be pondered that will, hopefully, bring you into a closer relationship with God through a better understanding of Jesus Christ.

Book Description

In a thrilling novel with clever twists and turns, four characters—a graduate student, her professor, his wife, and her priest—spin out of control in a world where science and religion are in constant conflict. A priest of the modern Roman Inquisition arrives in a New England college town to investigate allegations of child abuse by the local parish priests who have suddenly and mysteriously disappeared. The priest, a famous scientist in his own right, is immediately drawn into the private hell—and bed—of a pretty parishioner who confesses that she wants to kill her husband because of his infidelity. The husband, a prominent yet self-absorbed professor, is relentlessly driven by his mad quest to win the Nobel Prize and by his brazen and reckless lust for his students. When one of them falls ill with a mysterious neurological disorder, no one knows how bad things really are—until the subject of the professor’s secret research is revealed and crescendos in a brilliantly depicted battle between faith and science.

5 out of 5 stars Best debut novel by an author in years.......2007-09-17

I really didn't expect to like this book much based on the cover flap synopsis, but I could not have been more wrong. It grabbed me very quickly and kept me glued throughout to the last page. Even though the author was bold enough to set up overt clues early in the book about what would happen, I couldn't predict any of the twists and turns in the story. It was like being in the ring with a professional boxer, with blows landing at will from every angle. Unbelievable effort for a first novel. I am definitely looking forward to T.K. Kenyon's future work.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant and Thrilling.......2007-07-07

Let me tell ya something about elegance. Elegance is
a matter of refinement and quality, sure. But it's
also a matter of complexity. Elegant things just have
more going on than things that are merely excellent.
You may disagree, but I find the Beatles excellent,
Bach elegant. You get my drift?

The first layer in this book is the question of murder itself.
We know from the outset that someone's going to
die, but we don't find out who until half-way into the
book. The author hasn't so much muddied the waters as
she's added levels to them. Is the victim to be
*the annoying and ambitious medical researcher? Could
be-he's unlikeable enough and no innocent creatures-or
readers- would miss him much.
*the graduate student with whom he is conducting an affair?
Maybe-she is brutally transgressive of all the rules of
female romantic life. She's the sort of heroine who is
always dispatched in the movies to reinforce the notion
that sin doesn't pay.
*how about the researcher's milquetoasty wife?
The researcher obviously wants her dead and from the way
her character is built, it seems that the author did too.
Her husband not only has the motivation, he has access to
all sorts of yummy viruses to do the job.
*or maybe it's the impossibly refined and educated priest
who's just arrived on the scene, sent by the Vatican to
lead their parish out of the inferno of a child-abuse
scandal and into the paradiso of something better. His
name, of course is Dante and he has the combination of
faith and doubt that is sometimes resolved in pulpier
novels by a heroic death.

Then there's the question of sex. (is sex a question?)
anyway, all the main characters are simmering with
unfulfilled lusts. Some, like Leila the grad student, are
ferociously acting out. (Leila is a deliciously
good acter-outer by the way). Others are celibate or so
repressed as to be semi-celibate. Does all this sexual
stewing have anything to do with the illicit sex that
Dante has been sent to stamp out? Or isit thematically
related to the HIV research going on in Leila's lab?

The science adds another layer, an elegant hypothesis
is teased out of the authorized and underground experiments.
The conjecture relates ultimately to questions of faith
which are another layer.

There is more, much more. The roles and rules of men and
women, the politics of institutions and the tidal waves
of ambition all weave threads that recur and fascinate.
What makes the whole thing work is that the author is bigger
than any of the devices she uses. Nothing is obvious, every
thread leads to another consideration without a hint of cliché.

So let's define something else: the word thrill. A thrill
is a shiver of delight-it's physical and mental and spiritual.
Suspenseful, erotic, many-layered and intelligent, Rabid is truly
an elegant thriller.

3 out of 5 stars Far from perfect.......2007-07-01

First of all, I must say that the reviews thus far have been far too quick to award this book with a 5-star rating! Rabid is periodically entertaining, but it is not flawless by any means.

The author has crafted a compelling narrative, but Rabid is often bogged down by superfluous scientific terminology. Unless you are a doctor or scientist, you will frequently be forced to consult your dictionary. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it quickly becomes tedious.

Also, the book could have used another edit -- several scenes could have been condensed or omitted altogether -- and the character development isn't entirely effective. I wanted to care about these fictional lives, but the character I felt was most complex was the doctor's mistress, Leila. You would never guess from the first chapter, in which housewife Bev finds a pair of underwear in her husband's suitcase (the first of countless cliches), but Leila is actually the main focus of the novel and the book really hinges on her fascinating personal struggles.

Rabid is worth a look, but don't expect an easy summer read or a literary classic. One thing is certain -- if you're reading it with a book club (which I did), it will certainly inspire some interesting discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Rabid Gave Me A Rise ... Thank You Very Much.......2007-05-19

Rabid is one of those hot novels that while you're reading it you stop reading for a moment and flip to the photo of the author and gaze at her for a moment and take in a deep breath and let it out. I kept doing that a lot. In other words, I knew I was a male human a few times while I was reading it if you know what mean. This well written story of the beaker mix of lust and science and religion is the lesson in chemistry I never got in college. Rabid just gave me a Ph.D.

5 out of 5 stars A Crucible of Themes and Characters.......2007-04-20

I love finding a new, brilliant, genius writer. Where has TK Kenyon been hiding? This is her first novel, but it's brilliant. I'm a physician, and two of the characters in this book are MDs, and Kenyon hits the notes about being a doctor perfectly. The science, and there is a scientific metaphor that runs through the book, is true. The stuff that happens in a lab is spot on. To summarize, Dante, a gorgeous Italian Jesuit priest, arrives to investigate claims of pedophilia by another priest and to counsel the victims. Bev discovers that her husband, Conroy, is having an affair and drags him to counseling with Dante. Conroy is having an affair with Leila, his student, and Kenyon gets the tone of the university lab just right. Dante tries to counsel them, but Conroy doesn't want counseling, and the four characters spin out of control. One of the characters kills one of the others about a third of the way through the book, and then the book gets more complicated and scary and involved and crazy and fantastic. There are also parts that made me laugh so hard I had to put the book down. The dialogue, especially in the lab and during the trial, is so damn funny. When I started reading it, there were such strong, separate plot threads and round, perfect, thinking, smart characters, each with their own agenda, that I thought there was no way to adhere to E.M. Forrester's advice, "Only connect." By a third of the way through, I knew this was something really special, as the plot threads braided together and the characters struggled against each other and themselves. The end, with a trial, an exorcism, and a confrontation, is too shocking to ruin for you. I cried at the end. It was so sad and beautiful at the same time, and yet perfect. Any other end would have been wrong.

Book Description

In The Jesuits, Malachi Martin reveals for the first time the harrowing behind-the-scenes story of the "new" worldwide Society of Jesus. The leaders and the dupes; the blood and the pathos; the politics, the betrayals and the humiliations; the unheard-of alliances and compromises. The Jesuits tells a true story of today that is already changing the face of all our tomorrows.

4 out of 5 stars forget what you think you know.......2007-08-26

All of my life I've heard things about Malachai Martin. To hear my elders tell it he was either a mad man or a prophet. One day I decided to ignore all that and read the man's book and let him "speak" to me himself. First, I have to say that Martin was a talented and eloquent writer. He also must have possessed a sense of humour and was an enormously clever man. In the Jesuits he explains how the remarkable order went from being a dream in Ignatius's brilliant head to the mess it is today.

It's a sobering portrait and whether you believe that the Jesuits should be supressed again or that there really is hope for reform this book will chill you. For those who complain that JPII didn't do enough to discipline, The Jesuits shows that he was up against some very hard nuts. I don't know if I'll read any more of Martin's books and I have not made up my mind about Malachai Martin, the man or the priest but this is a very good book. Put aside what you think you know and give this book a chance.

2 out of 5 stars Mad Monk Martin.......2007-08-10

The late Malachi Martin's admirable eloquence and independence inspired him to critise the Catholic Church from the inside and, in this volume, the Jesuits from the inside. What puzzles me here is his conservatism. What worries me is the idea that he may be right: the high intellectuals produced by the Jesuits perhaps threatened to undermine what Catholicism is; not what it might become. For example, Martin regrets that the talented Jesuits might have "made mincemeat" of their brother Teilhard de Chardin (who believed that evolution and Christ-centred spirituality, far from being exclusive, are interdependent.) It isn't easy to understand Teilhard's writings, but harder still to demolish his towering genius. It isn't easy to understand the point of this book, either, and probably not worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars The Jesuits.......2007-05-12

This book is a tremendous story of the way the Jesuit Order operates at this point in time. Father Malachy Martin is superlative.

"Jesuits"............,

A disturbing, and politically loaded revelation as to conditions in the Vatican, i.e., the power battle between the pontiff (White Pope), and the General (Black Pope). The ugly SLOP of Satan, and his spewing devil Vomit is clearly apparent, and I haven't even finished reading this document.

Martin is credible, and has done a service to both the Catholic and non-Catholic.

4 out of 5 stars Review of The Jesuits.......2006-02-22

My attempt at capturing the basic thesis of this book is: In modern times, various worldly influences (e.g. Marxism, New Age) have caused the Jesuit Order to stray from its founder's vision to the point that much of it would be unrecognizable to him today.

The author is quite detailed in identifying facts, names, dates, and citations. Meant to appeal to a wide audience, the story is gripping and entertaining to the reader. Though I've heard general criticisms against reading Malachi Martin, I've never seen any point-by-point refutation of the claims he has made in this book.

The book focuses on the Jesuit Order in the Cold War era. Much of what I got out of this book was Martin's critical view of Liberation Theology. At the time I read it, I was also reading a pro-Liberation Theology book, which allowed me to hear both sides of the story. Liberation Theology is Marxist theology, supporting violent popular revolution. Poor people are good, rich people are bad, etc, etc.

Has the Jesuit Order strayed from the Catholic Faith and St Ignatius of Loyola's vision?

In my contacts with Jesuits, I've seen a number who are faithful to the gospel; while I've found plenty whose heterodox views would bolster the negative view of the Society that Malachi Martin maintains in his book.

Finally, I have to say that I purchased the book as an introduction to the Society of Jesus. It's absolutely the wrong book for that. But, it is a well told story, if you are interested in a critical view of some trends in modern Jesuit spirituality. It's written in the context of the Cold War--just before the fall of the Berlin Wall--so it may feel a bit dated.

Matteo Ricci (1552-1616), an Italian Jesuit, entered China in 1583 to spread Catholicism in the largely Confucian country. In order to make a persuasive argument for the educated Chinese to abandon their traditional faith for the new one he was carrying, Ricci realized that he would have to prove the general superiority of Western culture. He did so by teaching young Confucian scholars tricks to increase their memory skills--an important advantage in a nation with countless laws and rituals that had to be learned by heart. Ricci attracted numerous students with this method; more important, Ricci came to have a sympathetic understanding for China that he communicated to Rome, and thence to the European nations at large. Spence's portrait of Ricci is a gem of historical writing. --Gregory MacNamee

2 out of 5 stars Train of Consciousness..........2006-12-22

This book had some wonderful nuggets about Ricci and China, but there were so many tangents and mind-numbing details that it was challenging to read. The main issue is that the book is thematic in nature rather than chronological. On one page Spence is talking in detail about China in 1582 and the next he's talking in detail about Portugal in 1567. He flips back and forth across the decades and the continents enough that it's very difficult to get a picture of Ricci's life. A lot of Spence's content seems pulled from history books on Europe, having little or nothing to do with either Ricci or China. If you want a random, panoramic view of life in the late 1500's this book is for you. If you're looking for a comprehensive, orderly look at Ricci or China or his memory system you may be disappointed. It's worth the read, but with appropriate expectations.

4 out of 5 stars "Memory Palace" holds a wealth of information.......2003-12-11

I wrote my BA of Humanities thesis on Matteo Ricci and found Spence's book valuable for its information but mildly frustrating. "Memory Palace" is an excellence source for facts about Ricci's life for those who are not fluent in multiple languages or do not have access to the research material that Spence does. I turned to Spence for his commentary on Ricci's various writings that I did not have access to and for various tidbits of facts. Furthermore, Spence does a good job of illustrating the world that Ricci lived and worked in. For example, I was enlightened on the relationship of the Jesuits to the Portuguese King and how the Portuguese port of Macao in China operated. It was good background information to supplement the primary text I was using.

However, the frustrating part of this book is its organization. While it's an interesting idea to organize it according to the first four Chinese characters in his mnemonic system (or "memory palace"), it makes for a near meaningless train of thought; I ended up skimming the lengthy chapter on "water." I'm still disappointed by the end because Spence offers no real conclusion or summary, just an enigmatic statement. I had previously read Spence's "Death of Woman Wang" and I realize that it is Spence's style to amass historical information with unorthodox organization (I think it's his selling point). It's creative, but not very useful. Fortunately, the book has an excellent index, so it's fairly easy to re-find significant passages.

For those that want to read an actual narrative of Ricci's mission, I highly recommend the English translation of Trigault's transcription of Ricci's mission journals; this was the primary text for my paper. I found it very interesting and suprisingly high in entertainment value, considering its origin.

Trigault, Nicolas S. J. "China in the Sixteenth Century:
The Journals of Mathew Ricci: 1583-1610."
trans. Lous J. Gallagher, S.J. (New York: Random House, Inc. 1953).

Also recommended for his examination of the religious issues involved with Ricci and the other Jesuits preaching Christianity in China is Jaques Gernet's "China and the Christian Impact." To sum up, it answers this question and more, "What happens when you try to insert the Christian God into the ancient writings of a sophisticated society?"

Gernet, Jaques, "China and the Christian Impact." (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1990).

3 out of 5 stars Not About Memory Systems.......2002-09-21

Having been hipped to the existence of the phenomenon of memory palaces by the books of Thomas Harris, (I'd forgotten all about them after reading one of Tom Wujec's earlier books) I was looking forward to finding a how-to book on the subject. The Memory Palaces Of Matteo Ricci, however, is, again not it. I already felt burned by Francis Yates' "Art Of Memory", which is more about Hermeticism than the purported subject.

Interesting though it may be, the book is mainly about Ricci's life and times as a Jesuit missionary in China, something I would have gotten from any biography about the man, which in fact this is. There is some cursory mention made of the principles of using loci for the purpose of memory, but that's it. Not even Ricci's own method is analyzed or discussed in great detail.

4 out of 5 stars Biography? History? Memory Improvement?.......2002-09-13

Jonathan D. Spence has written a book which can fall into a number of categories. On one level, it is a biography of a Jesuit who worked as a missionary in China during the Post-Reformation period. On another, it is an examination of his remarkable memory. On yet another, it vividly describes the China of this era and the efforts to bring Christianity to this closed society. The structure of the book is unusual for the genre, but is surprisingly successful. Ultimately, the book becomes a sort of psycho-historical account of a most remarkable man in a most remarkable place in a most remarkable time. Images from this book will linger in your mind for some time to come. Recommended for those interested in religious history, missions, the Jesuits, China, or artificial memory. A more technical companion piece is Francis Yates' _The Art of Memory_.

Book Description

In this enlightening book, William Barry and Robert Doherty explain just what makes Jesuits tick. Through an exploration of Jesuit spirituality--what makes it different from other spiritualities, even Ignatian spirituality--they help readers understand this religious order that has played a significant role in the life of individuals, of communities and of cultures. They demonstrate that at the heart of Jesuit spirituality lies a set of lifegiving and creative tensions between, for example, companionship and mission, obedience and learning from experience, and center and periphery in the Church.

5 out of 5 stars No Longer Divided.......2006-01-31

One of the greatest challenges of responding with a life-giving "Yes" to the call to become a living reflection of Christ's presence in the world is dealing with the seemingly conflicting pulls. Do I spend time in prayer or in service? Do I want to join a religious order or become involved in a ministry where I live? "Contemplatives in Action" shows how these paradoxes can actually become a creative tension in our lives. It's wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, compact little gem.......2005-09-10

This small book is an excellent, accessible introduction to Jesuit spirituality. The authors, both highly respected Jesuits with vast experience of the Spiritual Exercises, have written a work intended for a general audience. Containing only 80 pages of text, the book is organized according to what the authors describe as "a set of lifegiving and creative tensions" inherent in Jesuit spirituality. Their approach is both innovative and clever. They cover some of the historical circumstances which called forth the kind of responses from the earliest Jesuits that have come to characterize Jesuit spirituality. I cannot think of a better, more compact introduction to Jesuit spirituality for the novice. Especially good for those working with Jesuits or in Jesuit apostolates who want a quick, helpful primer.
