Lia Lee was born in 1981 to a family of recent Hmong immigrants, and soon developed symptoms of epilepsy. By 1988 she was living at home but was brain dead after a tragic cycle of misunderstanding, overmedication, and culture clash: "What the doctors viewed as clinical efficiency the Hmong viewed as frosty arrogance." The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down is a tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions, written with the deepest of human feeling. Sherwin Nuland said of the account, "There are no villains in Fadiman's tale, just as there are no heroes. People are presented as she saw them, in their humility and their frailty--and their nobility."
Book Description
Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction
When three-month-old Lia Lee Arrived at the county hospital emergency room in Merced, California, a chain of events was set in motion from which neither she nor her parents nor her doctors would ever recover. Lia's parents, Foua and Nao Kao, were part of a large Hmong community in Merced, refugees from the CIA-run "Quiet War" in Laos. The Hmong, traditionally a close-knit and fiercely people, have been less amenable to assimilation than most immigrants, adhering steadfastly to the rituals and beliefs of their ancestors. Lia's pediatricians, Neil Ernst and his wife, Peggy Philip, cleaved just as strongly to another tradition: that of Western medicine. When Lia Lee Entered the American medical system, diagnosed as an epileptic, her story became a tragic case history of cultural miscommunication.
Parents and doctors both wanted the best for Lia, but their ideas about the causes of her illness and its treatment could hardly have been more different. The Hmong see illness aand healing as spiritual matters linked to virtually everything in the universe, while medical community marks a division between body and soul, and concerns itself almost exclusively with the former. Lia's doctors ascribed her seizures to the misfiring of her cerebral neurons; her parents called her illness, qaug dab peg--the spirit catches you and you fall down--and ascribed it to the wandering of her soul. The doctors prescribed anticonvulsants; her parents preferred animal sacrifices.

A Paradigm of the Complexities of Modern Medicine in Relation to Cuture and Ethnicity.......2007-09-30
I read "The Spirit Catches You, and You Fall Down" as a required reading for a Sociology course on Health and Ilnness in Society. This is simply put, an amazing piece of work, that not only is thorough, but has a great deal of emotion and you really are able to sense the pain, frustration, and joy, of both the Lee family and the medical community that cared for her. This work is also a testiment to the Hmong people and culture, who are often grealty overlooked in US Asian American culture. Anne Fadiman goes into great detail describing their culture, from it's language, history, and religion both here and in Loas, and to their unfortunate and tragic involvement in the US war in Vietnam which landed them in refugee camps in Thailand. My opinions vacillated at times from anger to empathy for her parents and their inability and refusal to follow the doctors advise, that could've saved their daughters life. I encourage this book to be read by anyone going into the medical field where you will encounter a myriad of ethnicities, that often fly in the face of conventional US medicine. This is nonfiction that reads with the excitement and personality of a well crafted novel.
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down .......2007-09-26
exceptional book for those involved in anything dealing with human relationships. gives unbiased information from all sides of the issue (language & cultural barriers resulting in medical "errors")
this book smacks you in the face with your own preconceptions about what families know about their child, and what professionals know about their field, and how sometimes those two don't mesh, resulting in the child being put in the middle.
oh yeah, and every once in a while you will want to yell out about "the guy hiding behind the rock." because hindsight is so clear!
Great introduction to cross cultural communication.......2007-09-04
I was assigned this book as a supplement to a Cross Cultural Communication class. It's a very interesting read about a young girl who gets caught between Eastern and Western medicine. It makes a good read to see how CCC can be so important in our daily lives. It has a good lot of medical jargon and even more characters. There are a lot of doctors that are important for various reasons. It is certainly not a light beach read. Once you read it though you'll want someone else to read it to have someone to talk about. You can get in long discussions over who is "right" and if there is a right.
Oh so predictable..........2007-08-07
Detailed, researched look at the Hmong people of Vietnam in America through the experiences of one family in the medical/hospital system as they try to help their epileptic child. Although the action takes place in California, the story would probably have been similar no matter where the family lived. Non judgemental author keeps reader engaged. Structure of the book with alternating chapters detailing the history of the Hmong and then the specific family works well. Cross cultural misunderstandings seem inevitable given language and cultural differences. Sad without being depressing.
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down.......2007-08-01
An excellent book. A powerful and moving true story of a cultural east/west clash, especially concerning medical care. I couldn't put the book down. Enlightening also when it comes to the drugs used in treating status epilecticus, specifically in children under three. I also appreciated learning about some of the political history regarding the beautiful people of Laos. My heart goes out to the Hmong people.

If you haven't seen Hay House's Lifestyles series of gorgeous gift books, there is no better way to acquaint yourself than with publisher/author Louise Hay's You Can Heal Your Life. A bestseller for many years, You Can Heal Your Life has been republished with bright, beautiful illustrations in full, living color and exquisite typography--each and every page is a work of art by artist Joan Perrin Falquet. The timeless message of the book is that we are each responsible for our own reality and "dis-ease." Hay believes we make ourselves ill by having thoughts of self-hatred. She includes a directory of ailments and emotional causes for each with a corresponding affirmation to help overcome the illness. For example, the probable cause of multiple sclerosis is "mental hardness, hard-heartedness, iron will, and inflexibility." The healing "thought pattern" would be: "By choosing loving, joyous thoughts, I created a loving joyous world. I am safe and free." --P. Randall Cohan
Book Description
Louise explains how limiting beliefs and ideas are often the cause of illness, and how you can change your thinking...and improve the quality of your life.

Wonderful information that can apply to anyone's life...how to change your life and get rid of all your excess mental baggage. A definite help book.
Amazing.......2007-09-21
I couldn't put this book down. It was an easy read and I have shared its contents with everyone I come in contact with. I carry it with me and re-read various sections daily to keep the information fresh in my mind. As I apply the principles I see a change in my life. Thank You Louise Hay. I wish I had found this book a long time ago!
A Must-Have for Those Working with Individuals in Distress.......2007-09-18
As a coach and a psychotherapist, I refer to this book in work with my clients very frequently (several times per week), and find it invaluable in helping individuals open to and receive the idea that their illness or physical situation has an underlying meaning that is critical to understand. Ms. Hay articulates the potential underlying problem so clearly and concisely, that my clients are often dumbfounded at the relevance of the message to their emotional challenges at the time. This material educates in a way that's also compassionate and empathic, which is essential in helping people move forward. I'm thrilled to have this book in my library and can't recommend it highly enough!
Fantastic.......2007-09-13
Fantastic book. I am glad I read it. It was worth my time and is a quick read.
A must have if you are seeking answers.......2007-09-07
I am glad that I got this book. I have only had it a couple of weeks, but I read something from it everyday. I love the illustrations and I am open the the suggestions. I am opening myself up to change every time I read her words. The book was worth the wait and I enjoy it everyday.

Dr. John Sarno caused quite a ruckus back in 1990 when he suggested that back pain is all in the head. In his bestselling book, Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection, he claimed that backaches, slipped discs, headaches, and other chronic pains are due to suppressed anger, and that once the cause of the anger is addressed, the pain will vanish. Relieved Amazon.com readers call this book "liberating" and say "it sounds too good to be true, but it is true." Sarno has returned with The Mindbody Prescription, in which he explains how emotions including guilt, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem can stimulate the brain to manufacture physical symptoms including fibromyalgia, repetitive strain injuries, migraine headaches, hay fever, colitis, ulcers, and even acne. If these psychosomatic problems all sound a little Freudian, what with the repression of emotions in the unconscious, it's because Sarno unapologetically borrows from Freud for the basis of his theory and cites childhood trauma as a major source of emotional problems. He also says that his program is a "talking cure" of sorts, since patients must be convinced their pain is rooted in their emotions before healing can begin.
The book reads a bit like psychology text, with Sarno quoting from psychoanalytic theorists including Heinz Kohut and Graeme Taylor and the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition). Sarno walks through the neurophysiology of mindbody disorders, lists the symptoms of dozens of disorders that he believes are emotion-based, and offers a basic program for overcoming psychosomatic pain and illness. His recovery plan includes meditation and sometimes psychotherapy, including behavior modification, and stopping any medication or physical therapy. While Sarno's ideas seem radical, they were commonly implemented earlier in the 20th century, when psychoanalysis was at its peak of popularity, and they promise to become more accepted in our current era of alternative medical therapies and anger management. --Erica Jorgensen

worked for me.......2007-09-23
quick comment: I bought this book on a whim and it worked. Thank goodness I gave it a try. I'm back to my normal life style after 2 years of pain controlling my every move...
This book has helped my sister and my best friend!.......2007-09-20
I purchased two copies of this for my sister and my best friend, both of whom have been suffering from a number of painful disorders. Both of them wrote to me very quickly after receiving the book and reported that it makes so much sense that they were excited and relieved to find such great information and ideas that were immediately helpful. I'm buying two or three more copies for other family and friends - it's a small price to pay for such wonderful results! Highly recommend!
What a relief!.......2007-09-17
Nearly 10 years ago a friend told me about this book. I had upper back pain that I attributed to yoga. There was no definitive moment of injury. I just woke up with this pain in my neck that started radiating down my arm. No structural problem was found through xray. I went to a chiropractor and ran after 1 session (not for me) and then physical therapy. After 2 months (!) the hospital kicked me out of physical therapy (!!) with residual pain that I figured I'd just "deal with". It pretty much faded but every so often I'd have an attack and I'd go get a cortisone shot or accupuncture. Not too bad.
Then in 2004 I got the mother of all pains: a lower back/sciatica pain that settled in and wouldn't leave. Again, MRIs, Xrays, etc. found nothing. I thought it was because of a severe left leg fracture that required 2 surgeries and 1 years total in a cast and crutches. I figured it threw out my alignment. Interestingly though, I developed the pain a few days after I met my biological mother (as an adult) who abandoned me at birth. I recognized the significance but I could not imagine this much pain could be attributed to that. The pain kept on and I was getting worse every minute. I felt like dying because chronic pain is something that we just cannot live with. I got on strong painkillers and finally found 1 that didn't anesthetize me so I could function and feel normal. I also got Raynaud's phenomenon too, never mind bouts of IBS and constipation over the years.
After a couple of years of stability with the pain meds generally blocking the sciatica pain, my upper back/neck pain kicked in with a vengeance this summer. It'd come and go but finally it settled for good. I remembered Dr. Sarno and ran for this book. To be fair, I had my second physical therapy visit 3 days ago. The next day I read the first half of the book and today I finished it. Right now I can move my neck around like normal. Its a little tender but not like the cripple Quasimoto neck I felt I had on Fri., so bad that I was ready to kill someone.
I am a counselor and a therapist, so when I first picked up "Healing Back Pain" I thought I already knew what he was saying so what's the point of reading it. I knew that emotions affected the body. I just didn't think it could possibly be causing as much acute pain, in 1 specific spot, like I was then experiencing. Well, it does. I am a believer now. Like he described, the pain will just keep moving and in a way that cannot be accounted for by a structural problem. How is it that my left side sciatica every now and then moves to the right? Or that my upper typically left side neck pain is on my right? I guess you really have to get to a point where you are willing to believe it (sort of like the surrender process in recovery from substances), or be willing to try to believe it, in order for it to work. I am going to start working on my rage issues some more(yes, there are plenty of reasons for rage in my life, past and present) and see if that will alleviate the sciatica pain I'd written off as hopeless. Actually, speaking of rage, at the age of 10 years old I had these terrible, painful attacks in my liver area. No one could figure out why. At the age of 21, I was finally diagnosed in the ER with gallstones that were on the verge of bursting my gallbladder and so I had to have it removed. Because of my age no one had thought that I could be having gallbladder problems. In Chinese medicine, the liver/gallbladder is the seat of anger. Pretty telling.
It worked for me.......2007-09-15
One previous reviewer states if you are scientifically minded, this book won't work for you. Well, I am not only scientifically minded, I am a scientist. Actually if you are a scientist and a bit familiar with empirical science and experimental design, it could make more sense because you will be less likely to misread it, and you could also check the medical literature, in particular evidence-based medicine reviews, yourself regarding the effectiveness of various traditional treatment modalities. I am grateful to Dr. Sarno. If you think TMS applies to you, I also recommend books by other authors who wrote about TMS, in particular Dr. Mark Sopher, Fred Amir, and Dr. Nancy Selfridge.
Psychological explanation of apparently physical pain and its treatment.......2007-08-05
Firstly, like most things in life, this probably won't work for everyone. However, if you read it with an open mind and finish the book, its likely to help you.
Coming from a family of allopathic doctors, I was somewhat sceptical about the theory (TMS) proposed by Dr Sarno which he has termed Tension Myositis Syndrome. However, it is actually completely in line with allopathic medicine, he just believes that the cause of most pain is psychological/psychosomatic rather than simply a physical/structural one.
The crux of his theory is that the mind/brain employs a mechanism to deal with emotional/psychological problems that the sufferer is unable to acknowledge or deal with on a conscious level by initiating a seemingly physical response (normally by reducing the blood flow to a certain physical area) which produces real pain in that area so that the suffer is focused on the physical pain rather than dealing with in many ways much more debilitating psychological/emotional pain.
This relationship between the mind and the body is, Dr Sarno believes, a sort of defense mechanism.
Sarno is clearly a very learned and experienced Dr and has a vast amount of knowledge, not just of allopathic medicine but also psychiatry (Freud) and complementary therapies.
His writing style is very simple and straightforward but very well researched and explained and he gives case studies to back up his claims. For what it's worth his theory and treatment method has been endorsed by several well-known celebrities including Anne Bancroft (RIP) and Howard Stern.
My personal experience was that I was suffering from excrutiating back and shoulder pain which rendered me unable to work using a computer. This made me extremely depressed as it limited me physically and had a big psychological impact. After numerous costly sessions at the osteopath and extensive physiotherapy I was not getting any better. I came across this book online and as a last resort I bought it. After reading the book I started to slowly feel better and now, two years on, my pain has completely gone. I occasionally get the odd twinge but I now know that it is nothing structural and will dissipate and that it is likely a referred emotional worry. As soon as I recognised this consciously and allowed myself to accept the possibility that there was something bothering me that I was unable/unwilling to face, I found the pain subsided.

Customer Reviews:
A Valuable Textbook.......2007-10-05
This book was a quick read, since there are many full page illustrations. I have revisited the book often, and consider it a valuable resource for years to come.
I admit to being skeptical when I purchased Steve Murray's products: How could a Reiki Master justify passing the secret Reiki symbols on to the general public? But I feel that we live in different times now. To coin a phrase by Caroline Myss, there are now many "Mystics without monasteries." I am grateful that Steve has made attaining higher levels of Reiki practice available to those who cannot afford to go the traditional route.
Wonderful.......2007-09-18
Here's my story. I didn't want to get any of his books or dvds. I read some of the reviews from other Master's and they talked badly about his teachings and how an attunement could not be done by watching a crystal on dvd. But, later i remembered having a dream when i was younger of watching myself staring at a crystal on tv. I thought it was freaky and didn't know what it meant, but then it all came together. So i started off with his first reiki book, the psychic attunement, and the reiki level one attunement. I had better results than i thought i was going to get. I have a natural gift for healing and i've been using it un-trained my whole life. His books and dvds helped me out a lot. This is the real thing and if you are new and looking to try reiki, i highly recommend it. I don't write reviews and Steve Murray is the first review i've ever written on. This is because i want people to know that this is real and powerful. The DVD's are powerful and the books explain it all and enforce all that is Imparted to you. By the way, I am a Christian and you should know that Reiki has no religion. I recommend all the DVD attunements, and i've read the first 3 Reiki volume set and the false beliefs. I will be getting more of his books and teaching. But i hope that this review and his works help you like it's helped me in my entire life and the people around me. I've healed things from headaches and back pains, to two different friends that were in the hospital death bed, one with severe kidney failure and the other had AIDS and i helped bring his status down to a controlled HIV status. Both were overnight. night saying it will work like that for everybody, but know that it will work in it's own way, some way. Be blessed all who read this.
Ultimate Guide Indeed........2007-09-05
I specially recomend this book if you have recently received your Reiki Master attunement or plan to do so. Nearly half the book is dedicated to the attunement process for levels 1, 2, Master, Healing and Psychic. Contains valuable information and it is easy to read and understand. It's a great book for my collection.
Excellent!.......2007-08-19
Not to repeat what has already been said but I just want to add my support to the positive reviews. I too read the reviews here before purchasing. I visited his website and came back here because Amazon always has the best deals. I took a leap of faith. The book is the foundation for the attunements. It is very clear and personalizes the Reiki Master who is giving you the attunements. I wouldn't do the attunement without having read the corresponding part in the book. You have to know what you have to know. The DVDs worked for me. I totally support this method and will continue on. I know there are different strokes for different folks but I gave it a chance it paid off. Actually, it paid off big time considering how much others charge for the same. I am extremely grateful to Steve Murray. He is a special and gifted guy.
Wonderful.......2007-08-09
I would like to thank Steve Murray for providing these Reiki attunement programs. I have received 1st and 2nd degree from his products and also from a live class. The experiences were very different but both were wonderful. I have not been able to raise the $1,000 required for my Masters Attunement from the organization that I received my live 1st and 2nd from but Steve has made it very affordable to receive the attunement. I have read some of the reviews and see that one or two have been upset because they didn't feel anything. I don't know what they expected to feel but Steve does explain that if you can't feel anything it does not mean that you did not receive the attunement. I have definitely been able to tell that I have received the Master Attunement even though I didn't "feel" that much while receiving the attunement.
I definitely recommend that anyone taking his attunements also read his Ultimate Guide Trilogy. They are so packed with information about Reiki that I feel so much more prepared to be a Reiki healer than I did prior to reading them. They are truely wonderful and his A Reiki 1st, Aura and Chakra DVD is very helpful in showing you how to perform your own attunements. Reiki False Beliefs Exposed is very good in answering questions you might have about things you have heard about Reiki and setting the record straight in many areas. I also have had Steves Psychic attunement and the wonderful thing about his programs is that you can take them over and over again and that is something you can't do with a live attunement. Of course, you need to follow Steve's cautions in waiting three days between pschic attunements. I believe that taking the Reiki Healer attunements over and over can continue to improve my abilities to be a better healer.

Getting Clear.......2007-09-19
One of my best friends bought me this book after I sent her Jayme's online newsletter...pretty powerful newsletter, I'd say! I read this book daily now and cannot believe the content and context of the information it constantly imparts to me; it is enjoyable beyond what I could have believed. Every paragraph has so far resonated with me and is the direction I have been wanting to go; and now I know I have a scout who has gone out there and blazed this trail and come back inside to write about it! This is a generous woman! Having met Jayme at several yoga studio events, I know Jayme lives what she writes and has an energy of such integrity around her. For me, that counts for everything. The cleanliness, clarity, strength and beauty of this writing portrays who Jayme is, and I can't say enough about that level and depth of life. It is awesome to find it outside of oneself on the pages of a book as grande as this beautiful book is. She has excellent taste in real life (by the choices of her teachers and masters), in my opinion, and I am happy to turn the pages of this book slowly and deliberately and find support on "how to do a life well lived". This is the perfect book for me. Having just bought a new space in L.A., I will use this book to go forward on discovering who the new me is! Thank you, J. And thank you, Sydney, for the book!
I simply love it!.......2007-08-15
Covering the depth and breadth of feng shui from the inside out, Jayme's thorough understanding of energy makes my efforts fun and amazingly enlightening. Oh my gosh, it works! I gladly decluttered the other feng shui books and that silly money toad, and follow Jayme's teaching exclusively. I am thrilled with the daily insights as well as the infusion of revitalizing energy in my life. This is one of those rare, truly life-transforming books, and I'm a five-star fan! Thank you again, Jayme, for your beautiful, inspiring book!
This is useful when used in context.......2007-05-07
I really love the ideas in this book! I am a strong Christian, so some of the ideas are a little odd, but overall the book makes a lot of sense. Generally it will create negative energy if you stick your finger in an electrical outlet. A lot of the stuff is just common sense, but I really love the colors and the ideas they give on laying out rooms and putting your space together.
Excellent book.......2007-04-19
This book is an excellent beginner's guide to Feng Shui. It covers the bagua, and gives excellent tips on how to energize your space with things you already have. It also gives a basic space clearing technique. I recommend this book.
Inspiring.......2007-04-05
I have to admit it, I purchased this book mainly for the pictures. I find photos of well-laid-out rooms inspiring. HOWEVER, I am recommending this book because of its incredible CONTENT. Jayme Barrett lays the subject matter out so perfectly. It's like a step-by-step manual, only much more beautifully presented. Oh, and the pictures lived up to my expectations as well!

Book Description
In 1997, Dr. Richard Bartlett experienced an event that would redirect the entire course of his life.
He suddenly discovered that by lightly touching his clients while at the same time applying focused intent, he could restore them to a physically, mentally, and spiritually balanced state, instantly shifting misalignments that had plagued them for years. Most astonishing of all, he could teach anyone how to do this. Now, for millions of people looking for empowerment in an age of declining and impersonal healthcare, Dr. Bartlett shares this phenomenon in a book full of explosive potential.
In Matrix Energetics, Dr. Bartlett builds upon his popular seminars to teach us how to access the discovery he has made -- a process that merges the science of subtle energy with our innate imaginations to produce measurable results. By applying forces known to modern physics, each of us can tap into states of healthy awareness from different moments -- in essence, travel in time -- and bring them into the present for immediate, profound results. As Dr. Bartlett clearly shows, this practice requires no special training, produces transformation in the blink of an eye, and is available to everyone who has a willingness to learn.
Matrix Energetics, The Science and Art of Transformation, provides an easily-reproducible, results-oriented process of change that draws on the fundamental principles embraced by the field of quantum physics. This paradigm-busting book can teach anyone how to access their creative power to heal and transform their lives. Dr. Richard Bartlett discovered that what he once thought about the human body was just the tip of the iceberg -- after seeing change beneath his hands, and hearing about the invisible transformations that were often revealed later -- he knew that he had to pass along what he had discovered.

Excellent.......2007-10-11
I was very impressed with this book, an "outside of the box" view of alternative healing.
ME Review.......2007-10-10
If I had to sum this product up in one line: This looks like a fantastic supplement to one of the seminars advertised on the ME website, but as a how-to guide, it leaves much to be desired.
Pros: Written in a very inspirational, but not preachy, style. I liked the many stories and personal anecdotes. I am an engineer and have taken basic quantum physics and this book, unlike many squishy new age type writings, didn't make me want to scream at the author's very loose treatment of quantum theory - Mr. Gordon pushes it at times, but not too far beyond what experimental data has to offer. He does offer a password-protected video for those who purchase the book that is supposed to help illustrate the technique(s) he teaches.
Cons: Some people seem to have a knack for energy work. I am not one of them. He does provide a set of exercises and I am working on them regularly, though without the rapid improvement in "energy" flows that I would desire after reading the book. If you can't make a seminar (as I have been unable to at this point) then we can only wait for a DVD or more video clips on the website to help illustrate some of his points further.
Overall, if you are into this type of thing, it looks like an interesting technique. If you are (like me) a skeptic who wants to believe and, more importantly, wants to be able to actually do this "energy work" then it leaves a bit to be desired.
exciting concept.......2007-10-06
Be prepared to let go of everything you already know. Fascinating work. I have signed up for seminar to see more.
Another skeptic is converted..........2007-09-27
Lightning bolts shot down my arms and came out of my fingertips. My head expanded as each hair felt like it had taken on a life of its own, searching for its own universe. My spine forgot its reason was to support my body and started bending one way, then the other, like an abandoned "bendy" toy. Twenty years of stress and anguish somehow found an exit through my brain, which was struggling to comprehend what was happening. Finally my legs buckled under me and my body collapsed into the welcoming arms of a Matrix intern, who had seen this exhibition many times before and fortunately was more prepared than I was for what was to be a life-altering experience.
As he gently lay me on the floor, laughing hysterically and more relaxed than I had felt in many years, I knew that the hands of Dr. Barlett had created something mystical .......
I had heard Dr. Bartlett on the radio, and was interested enough to go to his website, and then order the book - I was somewhat skeptical about the whole thing and felt that I wanted to attend a seminar so that I could see for myself. I must admit, that I was a little uneasy enrolling for the seminar, as it made me feel that the book was just enticing you to attend the seminar.
On the first day of the seminar, I told Dr. Bartlett (who is extremely "approachable" and available to anyone who wants to speak to him personally) I needed to feel his hands on me, as I needed "proof" that "something" was actually going on. The above description is what happened to me.
I still don't know what hit me - but I told Dr. Bartlett at the time that I felt like you had instantly taken 25 years off my life. When I returned to my seat, my new friends asked what had happened as my face had "softened" - and continued to do so over the next two days. More interestingly, my 22 year old daughter thought I had "face work" done while I was in Seattle - and relatives in England thought I had been at the Botox (something I've never done). The only problem is that it only happened on one side of my face - I now have no choice but to come to another seminar in the hopes that you can "fix" the other side of my face.
I realize this is supposed to be a book review, but I felt compelled to relay the above incident as it actually happened - I am not a doctor, or a healer of any type, and have no connection to Dr. Bartlett. But I did read the book from cover to cover, several times. I found it easy to understand and had no problem duplicating the technique with what I felt were minor successes, but could have perhaps been wishful thinking. I am only giving it four stars as I think there could have been more instructional photos. However, having read the book and having now been to all three levels of the seminar, I DO understand that, crazy as it seems, there really IS NOTHING TO LEARN!! Once you get that, you get the whole concept - and Dr. B. would be the first one to say that he has made it all up!! Name me an evangelist who would DARE to say that.
I am anxiously awaiting the next book, which I understand is in the works...and I will go to more seminars. As others, many of them M.D.s have said - there is definitely something to this, whether or not we understand what it is. All you disbelievers should suspend your disbelief for just long enough to give it a try - I did - and look what happened to me!
NOT total bunk: This skeptic got it to work!.......2007-08-23
I would not be writing this review, but I decided to after reading the previous post that this book is "Total Bunk." Being a doctor and also interested in quantum physics, I was intrigued with the idea of combining the two. I read the book with a somewhat skeptical mindset, but tried to keep open-minded enough to see if there was "something" I could get from it. I agree with some other posters that the book is somewhat of a hodgepodge and not really good at explaining the techniques. For writing, I would give it only three stars. I also thought some of the claims made either by the author or by some of the seminar attendees (as outlined in the book) were a bit pie-in-the-sky. I went to the website and noticed an upcoming seminar close to me and decided to see for myself what it was about.
Well, Dr. Bartlett got on stage and brought up people from the audience. One after another, people were falling over backwards after he touched them. It looked similar to the b.s. you see the supposed televangelical "healers" do. One man stood in an uncomfortable extreme extension posture on stage for about twenty minutes while Dr. Bartlett continued teaching and working on other people on stage. I thought I was probably witnessing some kind of hypnotic suggestions.
The next day of the seminar, Dr. Bartlett began teaching us how to do what he does. The woman sitting next to me was another doctor who had stopped her medical practice many years prior due to multiple cervical (neck) and lumbar (low back) spinal fusions from previous injuries. She had almost no strength in her right arm due to nerve damage from the neck surgery and constant pain and spasms in her left arm and shoulder from compensating for the weakness on the right. We looked at each other, both skeptical that anything like Dr. Bartlett was saying could be true, let alone us be able to do it after a brief intro.
On my first "application" of the first technique on her, there was some reduction in the spasms in the left arm with a total reduction of the pain. I decided to move on to the left arm to something I could measure more "objectively." I first tested her forearm flexor muscles and found almost no strength, then applied Dr. Bartlett's technique and retested. To our astonishment, she instantly regained about 50% of her strength. I applied the technique on that same side once again and retested. She had a full level 5 (normal) strength rating. I then moved on to the time travel technique. The doctor fell back into her seat when I got to the age that her neck injury occurred. I then two-pointed, with focused intent, to her neck, and "got out of the way." She instantly looked several years younger (we later joked about using this for anti-aging) and I told her to move her neck. Her ranges of motion were almost normal. Still being somewhat skeptical that I could have had anything to do with something like this, I spoke to her the next day to ask her if her improvements lasted, which they had. She had spend a part of the night reassessing her beliefs and I could see she was experiencing a total life change. Dr. Bartlett ended up bringing her up onto the stage on the last day of the seminar and worked on the rest of the range of motion in her neck and then her lumbar spine, having no idea that her entire lumbar spine had been fused. She bent down and touched the floor with her fingers. The stressed, skeptical face I saw in her on day one turned into one of extreme joy with a very wide smile and she was blinking back tears.
The other people I worked on were not as dramatic and I didn't have as dramatic effects occur on myself (but didn't have anything in particular that needed "healing"), but after I used the "time travel" technique on another person, I was able to give her a rundown of her life experiences from age to age that she said was "very accurate." As I did the technique on her, I "felt" things at certain ages and wasn't certain what I was feeling. AFter it was over, I gave her a quick overview of her life, not knowing what I was going to say until a split second before I actually said it. In other words, I ended up giving her a psychic reading of her past, but had no idea what her past was until I began to verbalize it!
Once I got home from the seminar, I applied the techniques to my partner (another doctor), who has a long history of injuries, including one that lead to back surgery, and terrible, contorted posture. To our surprise, he leaned forward and his very contracted calves began to elongate, then he went into a strange dance standing in place that we could see was correcting his lower legs and pelvic region. The injuries that lead to the calf contractures occurred when he was a teenager. It was the first time in decades that he felt them lengthen and relax. The next day, the focus was on another aspect of his posture. He went into another standing dance that was different than the day before and was more flowing--kind of like tai chi. It was apparent that he was moving in directions he was not able to voluntarily do on his own. This lasted about 25 minutes until he was becoming fatigued and decided to stop it, but during that time, the dance changed and I could see the focus on another aspect of his faulty postural patterns as though his nervous system was being retrained. By the way, he did not attend the seminar because he was totally skeptical and was surprised when his body began to spontaneously move when I first touched him. We have more work to do, but he reports that he is able to walk more comfortably and his chronic postural pain has reduced.
Dr. Bartlett himself does not claim to "know" exactly what he's doing. In fact, his emphasis is on shutting down the logical left side of the brain in favor of the subconscious and creative right side. It's basically having a focused intent for the person you're "working" on, then throwing it out to "the universe", "God", "higher power", "higher self", your "guides", "angels", "collective unconscious", or whatever you're comfortable calling it, to do the work from there. I certainly cannot claim, with all my training, to know exactly what I "did", except to use my consciousness to collapse the probability wave in spacetime to set "something" into motion.
And so, this bunk-seeker will be signing up for the next level seminar and will probably end up getting certified under Dr. Bartlett. This appears to hold much more promise than the $80,000 in student loans that I took out to pay for my medical training many years ago. This, I do believe now, is the medicine of the future or at the very least--a new branch. Dr. Bartlett is on to "something" and it's apparent that this is only just the beginning.

What sets Anatomy of the Spirit apart is Carolyn Myss's ability to blend diverse religious and spiritual beliefs into a succinct discussion of health and human anatomy. For example, when describing the seven energy fields of the human body, she fuses Christian sacraments with Hindu chakras and the Kabbalah's Tree of Life. Fortunately, Myss is a skilled writer as well as researcher, able to ground her extensive spiritual and religious discussions by using real-life stories and a tight writing style. Those who are squeamish with the notion of biography affecting biology will find this book a struggle (in one chapter, Myss links pancreatic cancer with a man's refusal to unburden his life and start fulfilling his dreams). Many, however, hail Myss for creating a valuable contribution to the ongoing exploration of spirituality and health. --Gail Hudson
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
A former journalist turned medical intuitive, Caroline Myss soothingly fuses Hindu chakras, Christian sacraments, and the Judaic Tree of Life to form her seven stages of power in the human body. Reading her own work to an appreciative studio audience, her tone is often confessional as she builds her case by using stories from her own life of spiritual growth. The audience responds with mild laughter at her wry asides, as if at a New Age dinner party somewhere in the Colorado mountains--where this was taped--with an extra place set for you. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Kimberly Heinrichs
Book Description
Anatomy of the Spirit is the boldest presentation to date of energy medicine by one of its premier practitioners, internationally acclaimed medical intuitive Caroline Myss, one of the "hottest new voices in the alternative health/spirituality scene" (Publishers Weekly). Based on fifteen years of research into energy medicine, Dr. Myss's work shows how every illness corresponds to a pattern of emotional and psychological stresses, beliefs, and attitudes that have influenced corresponding areas of the human body.
Anatomy of the Spirit also presents Dr. Myss's breakthrough model of the body's seven centers of spiritual and physical power, in which she synthesizes the ancient wisdom of three spiritual traditions-the Hindu chakras, the Christian sacraments, and the Kabbalah's Tree of Life-to demonstrate the seven stages through which everyone must pass in the search for higher consciousness and spiritual maturity. With this model, Dr. Myss shows how you can develop your own latent powers of intuition as you simultaneously cultivate your personal power and spiritual growth.
By teaching you to see your body and spirit in a new way,
Anatomy of the Spirit provides you with the tools for spiritual maturity and physical wholeness that will change your life.

A teaching tool........2007-09-08
I am a retired RN and a Reiki practioner, and I teach Meditation. I encourage my students to get Caroline Myss's book "Anatomy of the Spirit" to help them understand mind, body spiritual and emotional healing and how we are responsible for our own healing. It is a wonderful book as are all of her books. Having "Anatomy of the Spirit" on CD is great for listening in the car and for walks.
Just what the doctor ordered.......2007-07-22
I have read this book about three times over a period of about 10 years and it never fails to inspire me. The way the book is broken down is very clear and it is easy to understand most of what is being said. The best part of the book, I think, are the questions posed at the end of each of the chapters. Those are questions that can help guide you towards approaching your life in a more organized way. The only issues I have would be the almost excessive religious aspects to the book. For those spiritual, yet non-religious people out there, I would suggest just taking those comments lightly and applying them to your own perspectives on life. In addition, there were times when I wished that there were more detailed and practical pieces of advice. I often felt that the advice was a bit too general and therefore didn't give me some of the practical help that I needed. However, regardless of those reservations, I still believe that this book gave me a stepping stone in terms of how I would like to change my life and that's an important thing.
Informative.......2007-07-19
Very interesting, I will have to listen to it a few times to get all the information.
Awesome book, a MUST have!.......2007-07-10
Normally I get 99% of my books from Amazon, but I was at the book store with my husband and I was just drawn to this book. I have never heard of Caroline Myss, but now I am a HUGE fan. I just love this book! Thank you Caroline for writting such an inspirational, eye opening, touching book.
Absolute read for ANYONE/EVERYONE in search of their own spirtiuality!.......2007-07-02
This is one of the most profound books that I have ever read. My life has changed completely. I can not put into words how inpsiring and eye opening Caroline's writing is. You must read this! It is not only for people seeking spirituality. It is truly about real life and YOU as an individual. I have referred this reading to 4 of my closest friends and they all feel exactly the same way after have read it.

Book Description
The Five Tibetans is a yogic system of highly energizing postures and exercises that originated in the Himalayas. Liberating and enhancing the innate energetic power of the human body and mind, these five exercises take a minimum of daily time and effort but offer remarkable results in the way of increased physical strength and suppleness as well as mental acuity. In addition, these exercises can be a vehicle for enlivening the senses and generating and harnessing energy for the purpose of self-transformation.
Regular practice of these postures:
Relieves muscular tension and nervous stress
Improves respiration and digestion
Benefits the cardiovascular system
Leads to deep relaxation and well-being
Tunes and energizes the chakras
The Five Tibetans are explained within the context of traditional yoga, providing a foundation for understanding.
Black-and-white photographs and illustrations complement the text and clearly indicate the proper execution of each exercise.

Yoga.......2007-05-26
Suggested by my Yoga teacher........great easy way to practice whether you're home or away.
Really good companion!.......2006-12-06
When I first bought this book a few years ago I tried it but after a few days lost interest. Later that year I found it again between other books I kept in a box and decided to try it again. And yes, it works!
It is not a long book, and it will take you maybe one or two days to read it. That being said, I think that it is a great source for those (like me) that like a quick dose of yoga, whether because of time or whatever reason.
The exercises within are great, and you can do them wherever you want without the need for a mat or blanket.
Ideal for traveling.
expect miracles.......2006-11-03
While recovering from a traumatic bicycling injury, I read Mr. Kilham's book and started out slowly.
I regularly increased my duration and am now incorporating The Five Tibetans into my daily life.
The exercises have opened up healing and strength channels I did not know existed. My recovery time was cut in half.
The book took all of one afternoon to read and understand, but the benefits will last a lifetime.
Pretty good!.......2006-05-12
I've been doing the exercises comprised in this book for the past few years -indeed they are good, indeed they work, but as with everything that regards the human body you can't expect them to work without you putting a bit of effort... I haven't been able to find such book yet, a book that can change your life or your health or the way in which you look at your own life by just reading it. Everything requires an effort.
If you are commited and decide to try these exercises go ahead, for they will work. They comprise a simple routine that can be done everywhere and at any time of the day.
But most important, look at the bright side of life!
Five Tibetans.......2006-03-24
Being a yoga practitioner for 6 years now - I found this book to be an excellent resource for those who want a quick effective yoga workout - those who don't have the time to do an hour a day as I do. It is also good for when you travel as it requires no mats, blocks, blankets or any of the other props needed for most yoga regimes. Only thing I found disconcerting was the First Tibetan which made me naseuous. I have to assume this would subside with time. Well written and easy to follow. A simple but effective book.

Book Description
A first-time examination of sexual anorexia, an extreme fear of sexual intimacy and obsessive avoidance of sex, by the acknowledged leader in the treatment of compulsive sexual behavior and recovery. Author Dr. Patrick Carnes begins by defining sexual anorexia and demonstrating how it and its parallel disorder, sexual addiction and compulsivity, often arise from a background of childhood sexual trauma, neglect, and other forms of abuse, Carnes explores the numerous dimensions of sexual health, examining key issues which must be addressed and resolved for recovery to proceed. Utilizing extensive research and elucidating case studies, Carnes develops concrete tasks and plans for restoring nurturing and sensuality, building fulfilling relationships, exploring intimacy, and creating healthy sexuality. Woven throughout the book are stories of recovery which illustrate sexual healing principles, model new behavior, and support motivation for change.Sexual Anorexia enables those suffering from this disorder to recognize that sex need not be a furtive enemy to be fought and defeated but, instead, a deeply sensual, passionate, fulfilling, and spiritual experience that all human beings are innately entitled to. Patrick Carnes, Ph.D., the best-selling author of Out of the Shadows and Contrary to Love, is an internationally known speaker and writer on sexual dysfunction and recovery. He is currently Clinical Director of Sexual Disorders at The Meadows, a treatment facility that works with clients who deal with a wide range of behavior disorders, addiction, and psychological conditions.

Absolultey on the mark.......2007-06-03
I have only just recently begun to read this book. But already I am absolutely shocked by how on target everything it says is. As I read the pages, I find myself wondering if the author has not been observing me and taking notes. I have always held a strong fear of sexuality, and always feel guilty when I find myself watching pretty girls or getting aroused. The author's descriptions if an interior world of denial and self doubt are precisely on the mark. I have not begun to utilize any therapeutic tips offered within, but so far I am deeply impressed.
Great book I hate.......2006-11-10
This is a great book to get out of the denial of problems with intimacy and sexuality. It is to the point and gives great help for recovery.
Finally a deeper perspective.......2006-03-30
After having tried different kinds of books and therapy which mainly is focusing on the technical aspects of sex with little success or progress, I feel that this book really goes behind the technical and offers a more complete explanation as to why some people have a difficult relationship with sex.
In comparison to other books that seem to tell you that if you have difficulty with sex you must have been sexually abused as a child, this book offers a more complete analysis and makes you think of little things and details which along the way might have caused you to find sex difficult, but in an uplifting manner, saying that it is ok and that you can solve it. It also tells you that you are not the only one suffering from this fear of intimacy and that it is ok and you can do something about it.
In my opinion it is a very well written book and is worth reading for a lot of people in order to get a greater understanding of themselves and the world around them, focusing on how intimacy can be difficult and providing solutions to work through it.
Empathetic and brave.......2003-02-06
This book has been very useful to me. It's written with a good deal of compassion and insight, and even though I think the authors oversimplify some issues, they manage to get near the heart of what makes sex so difficult for many people. The recommended activities are generally weak and none too useful, but that's true of most self-help books. Even the good ones.
About the Book.......1999-08-14
