Book Description

No one can deny that our culture is opposed to Christian values, and the influences bombarding our children's moral development can be deadly. But few parents and church leaders realize how critical it is to start developing a child's biblical worldview from the very earliest years of life. The problem is complex: parents who themselves did not receive early spiritual training leave their children's training to the church. Yet the church often focuses on older children-not realizing that a child's moral development is set by the age of nine. The answer is for churches to recognize the need to come alongside parents to provide them biblical worldview training, parenting information, counseling, etc., that will equip them to help their children become the spiritually matuare Church of tomorrow. Profiles presented of churches who are effectively ministering to children and winning the war our enemy is waging against them\. Research orientated books on childhood spiritual development. Raising Heaven Bound Kids in a Hell Bent World by Eastman Curtis / What Your Kids Need to Know About God and When by John Trent / Introducing the Spiritual Side of Parenting by Ron Clarkson / Bringing Up Boys by James Dobson

The book was packaged very nicely and it came in mint condition. I was very pleased with the service I received.

1 out of 5 stars You've GOT to be kidding.......2007-10-01

It's a joke to say "No one can deny that our culture is opposed to Christian values, and the influences bombarding our children's moral development can be deadly"---Our culture in inundated with "Christian" values judging us and our children, teaching intolerance, and bigotry. Teach your children that they are part of a bigger picture that includes EVERYONE, not that they are superior, or that they will be punished by GOD. I became a much more responsible (i.e., moral) citizen of the world when I stopped trying to do right because I'd be punished, but rather did right because it was right!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Parents and Teachers.......2007-02-24

George Barna is a Christian revolutionary in the best sense of the word. His insightful commentary, statistical analysis, and vision for success are inspiring and He provides great direction for any children's ministry in this quick reading book.

5 out of 5 stars One of THE BEST..........2006-11-15

I've worked with children for years, understanding that, as someone? has said (can't remember the exact quote), "It's easier to raise healthy children than it is to fix broken adults." Mr. Barna excellently explains and promotes this truth: pouring into them while their young so the foundation in Christ is firm and immovable. If you're planning to nit-pick the details and statistics as several readers that reviewed the book did, then I guess this book isn't for you. If you're looking for specific how-to's, it isn't the book, either. But, if you're looking for a book that grabs your heart and stirs you in ministry to children (or your own), and you're willing to ask the Holy Spirit, "How, specifically, do we do minister to children in OUR church (or family)?" then this is THE ONE! This book has stirred me to have faith for greater results, give more, reach higher, pray more earnestly, love more unconditionally, lay down my life more sacrificially than any other book I've read on the subject. I'm in the middle of reading it a second time and have it now as a must-read for all new teachers!

5 out of 5 stars LETS NOT LOSE ANOTHER GENERATION.......2006-03-06

If you are like most passionate followers of Yehshua we do not want to lose another generation from the church. This book is a must read for pastors, youth pastors, lay ministry workers and the body of Christ at large. In practical everyday language George Barna hits home the message that if we do not reach this up and coming generation for Jesus it will be to our peril. It begins at the home level so parents get this book, read it, pass it on, tell everyone you know to read it. Life impacting, life changing!

5 out of 5 stars An old friend.......2007-09-19

i bought my original copy of this book in the 70's. It served me through both of my pregancies, inspired me to want to be involved with catching babies. My route was through med school. The book was loaned out many times. Its great strength is in the many good birthing stories. Our cultures view of birthing is full of horror stories that terrify mothers. A terrified woman does not have a good birthing experience. We are also inundated with technology. This book is a marvellous antidote, and has been important in making birth a normal and positive experience for the women who delivered with me. It is delightful to have the new edition, and to read through it again.

This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend to ANY woman. It will open your eyes and heart

5 out of 5 stars I want to share this book with all Women!.......2007-08-26

A good friend told me I should read this book, even though I wasn't pregnant ... I put it off. Now that I am pregnant, I read it, and now understand why you should read it. Woman who can become pregnant, should be educated on what to expect - this book starts out with awesome accounts written by woman who gave childbirth (hospital and natural); it empowered me. I am no longer scared of the unknown, I bought two copies of my own to share with pregnant friends and family, and recommend this as a gift to any woman who wants kids "someday", or who is expecting. Knowledge is power! I also recommend, Ina May's Guide to Childbirth (more suggestions and information regarding hospital options - I feel like it speaks to a larger audience). After reading this book, I would like to tell you that I do not have an ailment, I am pregnant; hospitals are for sick and injured people.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Pinnacle!.......2007-08-09

This is right up there in birth literature. Being an Active Birth Centre librarian, I've read a few. Some of the stories get a bit "trippy" which might put a few off but it's full of heart and practical advice. Dads with a sense of humour will love it. I have referred to it many many times for myself and other women. A must have classic.

5 out of 5 stars trippy birth stories.......2007-08-09

I've read a lot of birth stories books and so it was a surprise to read this book full of people tripping out on the experience. I liked the second half about midwifery details too. I've been toying with the idea of becoming a midwife and this has certainly given me much more info to think about. I highly recommend this book before anyone's birth since people should know that the hospital experience, while being the cultural norm, is the aberration in how birth should be!

Whether you are the one who leaves or the one who is left, divorce is a painful, wrenching experience, explains author Debbie Ford. Since Ford is comfortable dwelling in the shadow side of life, it's not surprising that she believes that the excruciating pain of divorce can lead to enormous spiritual growth. "Emotional turmoil can be a powerful catalyst to reconnect us with our divine nature," she writes. "It propels us into a journey of self discovery and urges us to learn how to love and accept our entire being." Herein lies the promise of a "spiritual divorce."

Because Ford is a highly effective workshop leader, she has a knack for breaking down spiritual matters into manageable bites. She is also willing to share the truth of her own painful divorce, allowing readers to see her initial pain and consuming resentments. Ford divides her book into seven laws, beginning with the "The Law of Acceptance," where readers are asked to imagine a benevolent divine order at play rather than taking a blaming stance. In the section titled "The Law of Responsibility," Ford encourages readers to gently begin the process of taking responsibility for their own darkest qualities. This is the thrust of Ford's highly respected shadow work--illuminating the dark side so we can stand in divine light. Each section ends with "Healing Action Steps," where Ford suggests specific exercises or meditations. For example, in the final chapter Ford asks readers to make a new "divorce vow" that is a lifelong commitment to one's highest self. --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Enlightening.......2007-08-08

I recently experienced betrayal in my life and was faced with divorce. This book helped me to survive the initial pain and begin to build a friendship with my wife. I was able to take the practical and spiritual advice of Debbie Ford and apply it to every part of my life and current situation. I dont know what I would have done without this book. It is a gift that I use in my daily life and also began using it with clients that I see in my psychotherapy practice. I plan on recommending this book to all I come into contact facing a divorce. It will make a difference in many live especially where children are involved. the days of drawn out legal battles concerning divorce and custody are over. It is now time to do these things in a mature and enlightened way and Debbie Ford's book is our blue print for this major paradigm shift. Highly recommended to any seperating or divorcing couples.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom from my divorce story!!!.......2007-05-31

How sick and tired I was of telling everyone in my life the sad tale of my divorce. "My husband never came through for me, he wasn't who I thought he was, he let me down..." bla, bla, bla.... Until I read this book and came in contact with Debbie Ford's work, I thought I had no other choice but to drag my victim story around with me. How wrong I was!

Little did I know that hidden within my rage about how my husband never came through for me was the realization that I know how to take care of myself! When I let go of the disappointment that he never provided financially for our family I suddenly unleashed my own earning potential (after I stopped waiting for him to do it!). Honestly, nothing has made such a change in my life - both my inner world and my outer world -- as the process outlined in this book.

If you are a parent and are going through or have gone through a divorce, I would also highly recommend Ford's audio program called The Essentials of Extraordinary Parenting - A Self-Guided Coaching Program.

5 out of 5 stars life changing .......2007-04-08

This book is simply a great way to approach life even if you have never been married and divorced. It is helpful to deal with any kind of loss weather it be from a death or break up. It gives real world examples and useful tools to approach realationships and just learning more about ones self . I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about marriage or is in a serious relationship

5 out of 5 stars Might as well buy several copies--you'll need them........2007-03-20

I am not going through a divorce, but like everyone else, I have had relationships that didn't work out the way I hoped. A few friends are going through tough times so I read this book to have an understanding of what they are going through and WOW, was I in for a surprise! This book had so much to say to me on ways I can work on myself so that I can have a better marriage and better relationships with kids, friends, co-workers! If both partners care enough early on to follow her wisdom and guidelines, I think you could prevent divorce with this book.

I could not put this book down. As a Christian, I may be talking to a different God than Debbie is, but that didn't slow me down one bit--she has a way with words that cuts through murky, repetetive thoughts and forces you to take responsibility for whatever your situation is in life. I I have read a LOT of self help books, but this one says things in a very practical, non-judgmental way. I can now look at my friends going through divorce, point this book out to them and be happy that there is a bright light at the end of their tunnel. And I believed that before, but I didn't know how to help them believe it until I found this book. Many thanks to you, Debbie.

5 out of 5 stars This is a "must read".......2007-02-15

This book was recommended to me as I just recnetly ended a 4 1/2 year relationship. At first I thought "why am I reading this book?" I'm happy about my decision and I'm not hateful towards my ex. I stuck with it though and am now very glad I did. I found the contents of this book to be so helpful that I just purchased five more copies to give to people I know. This is a book I want to keep so I can refer to it often. Although it is an "easy read" I would suggest only reading a chapter/section at a time in order to give yourself time to digest the material. This is just simply a "good book" - even if you are not going through a divorce. Truly a "must read" - for anyone.

Book Description

"Autism and the God Connection is a compelling, powerful and thought-provoking book. Mr. Stillman describes the discoveries that unfold from conversations that he has with people that have a difficult time with conventional communication. He is able to see, feel and hear people from different perspectives." --Nicki Fischer, executive director, publisher and editor, The Autism Perspective Magazine

"Autism and the God Connection is a fascinating and timely exploration of the special sensitivities and spiritual connections of people with autism." --Dean Hamer, Ph.D., geneticist and author of The God Gene

Autism impacts one out of every 166 children--ten times higher than just ten years ago. Despite the international scrambling of scientists to provide an explanation, there remains no single known cause for the rise in autism.

Autism and the God Connection views autism through a spiritual prism, unlocking its hidden meaning. Through countless interviews William Stillman documents extraordinary examples of spiritual giftedness.

Autism and the God Connection boldly challenges our traditionally held beliefs about people with disabilities. Readers looking for hope, inspiration and a deeper understanding of their loved ones will appreciate the affirming anecdotes of ordinary families.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A God Send.......2007-06-23

The insight you can receive from reading this book will bring a quiet calm to your life. An absolute MUST READ if you have a child or work with autism and a highly recommend for those who want to understand this increasing "epidemic", like those whose children have classmates with autism.

4 out of 5 stars A spiritual mishmash that touches your heart.......2007-05-18

When I read on page 11 about the child with Asperger's Syndrome asking God to forgive Osama bin Laden on the night of September 11, 2001, William Stillman had me. The subtitle is informative, as the book is a collection of anecdotes on the spiritual gifts of people with autism.

The purpose of sharing these anecdotes is to encourage the people in the life of a person with autism to presume intellect, to presume spirit, in the same way they presume intellect for someone with cerebral palsy or epilepsy. Some of the recently developed technologies for helping people with autism to communicate (touch keyboards, Facilitated Communication, etc.) make the idea of presuming intellect much more plausible than it used to be.

This is not a science book, as there is no scientific explanation offered for the surge in autism spectrum diagnoses, and no scientific explanation offered for any connection between autism and spiritual gifts. The works of psychics such as Sylvia Browne and John Edwards are used to explain these phenomena, as well as the books of writers on the cusp of science and spirituality like Raymond Moody and Dean Hamer. If you're not into these kinds of writings, you may not like this book.

But in the middle of all my harumphing, Stillman had me again on page 167, with the story of Elena, a girl with low-functioning autism, who opens the hearts of people with her actions.

Michael, a young man with autism, puts the exclamation point at the end of the book when he writes, "Suffering is God's way of freeing the soul."

I grasp that this book has been a great comfort to individuals with autism, and to the families and caregivers of people with autism.

The reason I don't give this book five stars is because Stillman references a number of different spiritual traditions (New Age, Christian, Hindu), and doesn't see any differences or inconsistencies between them.

5 out of 5 stars Autism and the God Connections.......2007-05-02

This book was reccommended to me by a person in a grief support group. She knew that I was looking for something new in my life. After reading this book I knew I had a connection to these children. I gave up 30 years of working with homeless youth to become the director of the Autism Center in my city.
For me this is the most incrediable book I have read in years. Literally life changing.

4 out of 5 stars makes a valid connection.......2007-04-17

I'm not an expert in Autism or Asperger Syndrome, however I was able to assimilate what he was saying easily. The book explores the spiritual connection of people with disabilities (mainly Autism), and delves into some of the psychic phenomena. It is not a religious book, and does not follow teachings of the bible in particular. The writers approach is spiritually advanced, and incorporates the beliefs of all faiths. He sees humanity as an evolving entity, with Autistic children playing an important role in the process.

3 out of 5 stars Autism-positive recount of experiences.......2007-04-09

Stillman provide an autism-positive account of paranormal experiences, emphasizing the highly sensitive nature of people with autism, which may be accountable for these experiences. If you are looking for a book to validate your own or your loved one's supernatural experiences, particularly from a monotheistic viewpoint, I recommend this book. However, the author only peripherally speaks about the connection with nature experienced by many autistic people, in favor of repeated references to "the Creator". While this is valid from his any many other's standpoint, it is not representative of all people with autism. This is not to suggest that any book could ever be representative all autistics. But if you are looking for something uniquely religious or spiritual about the autistic way of thinking or looking for information on autism and religion from a multi-cultural perspective, it doesn't provide anything particularly original. If you are looking for a metaphysical-type analysis of autistic perception, I highly recommend Donna William's "Autism and Sensing: The Unlost Instinct".

Amazon.com Reviews

Sonia Choquette is an internationally acclaimed spiritual teacher who has taught individuals as well as corporate staff members to claim and understand their intuitive and creative potential. (Julia Cameron, author of The Artist's Way, considers Choquette her personal mentor and teacher.) Over the years, students have often asked Choquette how they can foster their children's innate intuition and creativity. This book is a welcome answer to this parental quest.

Choquette has divided this outstanding resource into three sections--each part representing the three stages of nurturing intuition. The first section teaches parents how they can awaken and commit to their own intuition, spirituality, and creativity. The second stage focuses specifically on "Embracing Intuition." Choquette discusses energy fields, children's auras (and the need for after-school aura cleansing), and fostering children's imaginations and inner guidance systems. Lastly, Choquette offers parents specific tools for gaining support from spiritual guides, teachers, healers, and helpers. Parents who long to discuss and learn more about raising spiritual beings will be greatly satisfied with this intelligent and altogether wise family resource. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

"Connecting to our intuition unites us with both our soul and the soul of the Universe, Divine Spirit. It takes away our fearful sense of isolation and inadequacy. It replaces fear with a sense of spiritual direction and safety. The world becomes friendly, nonadversarial, and welcoming. Life becomes joyful, amusing, generous, and abundant. This is the divine plan. The intuitive life is one of confidence, inner peace, and creative expression. What better gift to ourselves and our children?"

How can I help my children to thrive and prosper? How can I ensure that they will not become unhappy and frustrated as I have been? These are the questions that inspired Sonia Choquette to write this profound and accessible book explaining--through spiritual principles, modern-day parables, and practical exercises--how even busy parents can help children connect to their own source of divine guidance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Teaching Children to Turst Themselves.......2007-03-20

This is a book from a many generation psychic on how to cultivate a home where children are trusted and are taught to trust themselves. Choquette herself was raised in a nurturing home by a mother who honored the six sense. If you have a sensitive child then this can help you create a supportive environment so that a child learns to trust themself and stay out of trouble. Children who are allowed to grow in their inner wisdom are more likely as adults to choose wisely compared to counterparts who are cut off from their gut.

On the flipside: Do you due diiligence on the credentials, even at the Ph.D. level of other more woo-woo writers on this field of energy and intuitive healing .... before you listen to their counsel. Many of them have Ph.D.'s from unaccredited places ... which means they didn't go through the same kind of rigor. Sonia is one of many popular New Agey type writers along with Doreen Virtue, Carolyn Myss, John Gray, Barbara De Angelis, etc .... who are examples of Ph.D.s whose source were unaccredited universities. Please keep this in mind when venturing out to learn from an inuitive healer ...

4 out of 5 stars Helped me get closer to my children.......2006-08-01

At first I thought this book would be too "fruity" for me. I am not particularly New Age, and the talk of aura cleansing and energy fields was a little offputting to me. But I decided to give it a try anyway. My daughter, who is almost 3, has an almost eerie insight into the way others in our family are feeling, and I wanted to explore and nurture this facet of her personality. I am glad I did. I have reread this book several times now (something I rarely do) and the exercises at the end of each chapter have led me to do a lot of personal reflection on the way I was raised and the way that in turn affects my relationships with my children. I feel that as a result of those reflections I am not only nurturing my daughter's intuition but I am closer emotionally to her, and a better parent to her, as a result. Pick up a copy and give it a read; you may be surprised at what happens in your family.

5 out of 5 stars Learning to Trust Comes From the Start.......2005-02-22

It is said that before children are trained to become human beings they are so truthful. Why? They are not yet trained in the art of denial. Their minds are clear enough to know an innate truth. Children have a wisdom all their own. Kids may be little but they are far more in tune with the what's so than adults. The Wise Child is a a program about nurturing this gift because the payoffs for a heightened awareness is positive. Being in tune is about going towards the positive and getting away from danger fast. Parents who believe in having an intuitive child will love this book.

I've also considered this a book for those who were somehow taught to shut down their intuitive abilities at a young age. So if you feel like reparenting your inner child towards a state of inner knowing ... this may be for you too.

5 out of 5 stars Learn how to create an environment that honors intuition!.......2001-04-04

The author has written such a beautiful book - filled with information, tools, reflections, and "exercises" -sure to help you (and your child) expand your awareness of intuition as well as how to embrace and share those "gut feelings". My favorite tool in this book was learning how when I'm apart from loved ones, I can imagine a protective light surrounding them, that keeps them safe and sends them my love. This book is truly a powerful, nurturing guide. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding book for parents!.......2001-02-01

This book has truly changed the way I am interacting with my children. I originally bought it because people have told me my second son (of three) is extremely intuitive and I should learn some special techniques to use with him; however, what I love most about this book is that it applies to ALL CHILDREN and will help any caring parent create a more loving environment for their family. And, I have read it twice already (something I rarely do...) I have pages marked, paragraphs underlined, and notes in the margins. I even made a "cheat sheet" to hang on the fridge for quick reference. I was going to loan it to a friend but I don't want to let go of my copy, which is why I am on this site; I am ordering it for three friends!!! This book is worth every penny and more. Read it!

An inspiration for mom's everywhere! "These stories made my heart smile." -Catherine Oxenberg, actress It will change your life forever. Although you undoubtedly heard those six words many times after announcing that you were expecting, you couldn't have imagined what they really meant. And then the moment came. Motherhood is a lifelong journey that's as unique as every woman who embarks on it. No other relationship fills our hearts with as much love, wonder and awe for another human being. Although motherhood is a timeless calling, today's moms have unique challenges and rewards. In this book you'll learn from other mothers and seasoned grandmothers who share the universal worries, the tears and the laughs that come with the job, as well as the wisdom to help you be the very best mom you can be. These stories are for every mom, whether you're an expectant or an adoptive mom, a stay-at-home or working mom, or a grandmother watching your grandchildren grow. Share this book with any mom to remind her of the profound role she will forever play in her child's life.

This mother-daughter team offers practical advice for parents who wish to bring more spirituality into their parenting as well as their children's day-to-day life. Parents, regardless of whether they belong to an organized religion or not, report that the book has been profoundly inspirational. Each chapter is devoted to 1 of the 10 principles of spiritual parenting and includes ruminations as well as specific suggestions. The writing is fluid, well organized, and filled with respect for parents and their children. In the chapter titled "Create a Flexible Structure," suggestions include: provide daily quiet time, downshift into your child's rhythms rather than always imposing your own, and try not to get caught up in the competitive rush to sign up, join in, and push harder to give your child a leg up on other kids. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, how do we, as parents, honor the spirituality of our children? As we shuttle between school, soccer practice, piano lessons, ballet lessons, birthday parties, and doctors' appointments, how do we find the time to encourage our children, through the ups and downs of growing up, to turn to God for guidance?

In 10 Principles for Spiritual Parenting, Mimi Doe and Marsha Walch open our eyes to the spontaneous, creative, freethinking joy that characterizes a child's innate spirituality. In ten easy-to-follow chapters containing exercises and practical suggestions, the authors point out that opportunities to express spirituality are abundant in our routine life. Talking at dinner, lighting candles, performing daily chores--all of these events have the potential to be sacred moments.

Contemporary parents face unique challenges: In our media-saturated culture, children are continually exposed to violence, cynicism, and a confusing code of ethics. By offering concrete ways to help children develop positive values, Mimi Doe and Marsha Walch support parents' efforts to counteract negative messages.

10 Principles for Spiritual Parenting is an invaluable guide for parents who yearn to help their children nurture a rich spirituality of their own.

5 out of 5 stars simply wonderful.......2003-09-07

Unlike many other 'parenting books' (full of psychological recipies which make you feel bad if you don't follow their particular recommendations, each one of course holding the absolute and only truth), this one is simply wonderful, refreshing, full of practical tips and freely inspiring. I was a bit skeptical when I read in a previous review that it could also be a spiritual book even without being a parent, but yes, it is definitely full of ideas to develop spirituality into one's life, being or not a parent. I'm sixth month pregnant, finishing the book, and now I feel completely reassured about the parenting adventure which awaits me. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2001-07-04

As an expert on creativity, I am very excited about this book as it easily guides parents into nurturing parenting by teaching them to honor the individuality of each child and encourage unique self-expression. By fortifying a child's self-esteem and acknowledging their natural gifts and abilities, parents can have a powerful impact on this next generation of "litle souls" ensuring that they become who they are truly meant to be.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderous and Inspiring --I'm Impressed!.......2000-04-05

This book caught me by surprise, with the warmth that infuses its writing, the penetrating insightfulness of its principles, and the ability to integrate its ideas into the everydayness of life. It elevated my focus from the intensity of life's details to touch base with matters of the heart. I began to reflect with renewed clarity on the sense of family and values that I impart daily to my children ages 5 and 7. While other books out there have tried to copy this message, this book clearly has become the classic in its field. What a tremendous service to us moms!

5 out of 5 stars Children's Spiritual Development - Creating a Better World.......1999-06-10

Giving children the best possible start in life includes fostering their spiritual development. In our fast paced, result-driven world, our emotional and spiritual needs can be overlooked. The principles highlighted in this book give invaluable guidance for parents wishing to assist their children in developing values and coping skills that will take them through the challenges of life.

As a therapist, I am happy to recommend this book to my clients who are parents. The best legacy we can leave to our children is a world that is gentler and more compassionate. The only route is through individual accountability - this book is an instrument to that end.

Book Description

In a culture that has lost touch with love, compassion, and meaning, how can parents be intentional about building a spiritual foundation for their children’s development? In looking to their own upbringing for guidance, parents often feel even more at a loss—they don’t want to make the same mistakes their parents did, so they either become too strict, or they take a completely hands-off approach. A pastor, a teacher, and a mother, Karen Marie Yust offers a refreshing array of resources and provisions to guide and sustain parents and children on thier mutual journey. Drawn from a three-year study of children’s spirituality, as well as the best in theological tradition and literature, Real Kids, Real Faith provides insight and a variety of helpful tips for nurturing children’s spiritual and religious formation. Yust challenges the prevailing notion that children are unable to grasp religious concepts and encourages parents to recognize children as capable of authentic faith.

5 out of 5 stars Every parent should read this book!.......2007-07-17

This book is so helpful to parents exploring how to introduce children to their faith journey! It is written from the author's prospective of not only teaching this art, but from her real life experience. It is easy to read, and offers so many useful ideas and techniques.

I am offering a small book study this fall using this book. If fits in perfectly with our core theme of personal spirituality!

Karen Yust has written a wonderful text about spiritual development of children. Her approach is very practical with excellent themes and tips on how to help children spiritually develop. She shares stories and themese from her family.

Every person interested in spiritual development of children MUST read this book! Teaching children spiritual practices at a young age is essential. She provides the tools needed to do so and the confidence in how to do that. I highly recommend reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Real substance.......2004-06-11

The author, Karen-Marie Yust, is a professor in charge of the Christian education programme at my seminary. A person of skill and accomplishment in both practical and academic aspects of ministry and education, she brings a lot of knowledge and resources to the task of looking at the spiritual development of children. This volume is part of the larger series on Families and Faith, looking at different aspects of faith formation in family settings, published by Jossey-Bass. The purpose of this series, according to Diana Garland and J. Bradley Wigger, is to help make love and grace real in family, congregational and community settings.

The idea of education for children, in secular and religious settings, is far from new, but the idea of formation for spirituality in children is relatively uncharted in the modern world. Spirituality is one of the ways in which we as human beings, adults or children, make sense of the world and where we belong in relationship to each other, and all others. Children have a sense of discovery and exploration, an appreciation for mystery and the unknown that is a vital part of spiritual formation - many is the adult who tries to recapture this sense in their own journey.

Finding appropriate resources for guiding children is not an easy task. Yust discusses the almost paradoxical situation of living in a society that purports to love and support children, but is lacking in resources appropriate to vital tasks - Happy Meals and Dr. Seuss books abound (and, in some ways, are valuable), but the tools for helping children exist as spiritual beings and grow into spiritually aware adults are lacking. She references John Westerhoff's text, `Will Our Children Have Faith?' drawing a similar conclusion that children will have faith so long as adults make the spiritual journey with them.

Yust's book is a practical one; it presents theory and observational data as appropriate to the task, but it is really a how-to guide in many respects. In one chapter, she likens the American culture in some ways as a `foreign' culture to the religious culture, and compares the struggle to co-exist in both to the way that immigrant families learn to co-exist with elements of the `old country' and their new home, developing a bi-cultural identity. In other chapters, she looks at the use of narratives and storytelling, as well as adaptation to language use (even if the same language of English is spoken in both home/secular culture and religious culture, the real `language' of meaning can be different).

The fifth chapter deals with prayer practices, and how to make these real and meaningful for children, including centering prayer and guided meditations. This is a useful guide for adults, too, as the chapter goes through in a clear and organised fashion the various types of prayer (supplication, confession, intercession, etc.) that we often forget. The next chapter deals with the introduction of theology for children - what they can know and grasp, and in what ways (which is often more than adults think!). The next chapter deals with action and expression of faith by children - social justice concerns, helping others, being aware and accepting of diversity.

Yust's conclusion deals largely with finding and fitting in with a community of worship. Not all congregations are created equal, even with denominations. There are various aspects to note, including availability of activities and opportunities for participation - this is not limited to who has the best Sunday School or who has the best youth group programming.

There are many nice touches here. Yust begins the introduction and ends the conclusion with reference to Maya Angelou's journeying poem, drawing the text full circle. There are reflection and discussion questions appropriate to each chapter; these can be for self-reflection or used as part of small groups and congregational/leadership events. The book would serve well a congregation that wanted to devote an eight-week study session to the subject of children, spirituality and their place in the community. Each chapter has pull-boxes with highlighted concepts, questions or activities for further consideration. Yust's reference list is nicely annotated, making further readings easily identified.

A wonderful text in many ways, it should find a home in the hands of every minister of a congregation with children, every Christian educator and parish leader, and every parent concerned with their children's spiritual development.

Chicken Soup for the Grandma's Soul is a sentimental treasury of memories gleaned from the hearts of grandmothers. This book will make you laugh and make you cry as you read about real life experiences as only a grandma can relay. What a wonderful book for the new grandma or the grandma with a dozen grandchildren. This book is a legacy for grandchildren, written by those who love them in a special way: the grandmas.

This book was purchased for my mother, who called to ask me why I gave her a book that would make her cry! Actually, she loved it. It's a great book, as are the so many other in this series. The only complaint I have is that eventually the book ends.

For many Christian parents, the responsibility of spiritual leadership in the home can be daunting. Never fear! Focus on the Family's Parent's Guide to the Spiritual Growth of Children outlines the basics of successful Christian parenting for parents with children ages 12 and under. Each of the book's three levels provide assistance and guidance: Level One addresses the apprehensiveness of some parents who feel unequipped to initiate spiritual leadership. By giving an overview of the "what, why, and how" of spiritual training, parents will feel confident and prepared. Level Two--"How To Pass On Your Spiritual Legacy"--focuses on pinpointing the character and interests of your particular family. From helping the parent identify the personality types of their children, to explaining what can be expected from them at a particular age, ideas and methods are given for making daily life a spiritual experience that honors the Lord.

Level Three is meant to be a resource that parents can refer to throughout the years as their children grow. Over 100 pages are dedicated to identifying how to teach the essentials to children in the four specific age groups (0-4, 5-6, 7-9, and 9-12 years old). Topics such as "Jesus has always been with God and is God" are followed by tips on how to creatively assist in your child's learning. While attempting to remain nondenominational, theological questions that children may ask are answered, and an entire reference section gives ideas for further reading both parents and children. While there is no formula to ensure that your child will grow up to love the Lord, parents can exemplify spiritual leadership by saturating their children in the truth of the Bible through the material provided here by Focus on the Family. --Jill Heatherly

5 out of 5 stars if you only read one book on raising Christian children..........2006-02-24

Whether your family is a beginner or advanced when it comes to spiritual growth, this is the best book for you. It starts by convicting parents of the need for purposeful training, then convinces them that they really can do it themselves, then tells them what their kids actually need to know, and spends the rest of the time showing you HOW to do it. The material is extremely practical and relevant.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Parents.......2005-07-19

I have read several books on teaching children about God, but this one by far exceeded my expectations! The wealth of information this book contains in supporting children spiritually and teaching them in many different ways, while acknowledging each child's learning style (and your own!) and your family's pace is amazing. It helps you develop a plan for spiritual growth in your family, not just tells you how and when and where to "teach" children. The only flaw, which I called Kurt Bruner about, was that their many references to "forms available online at www.heritagebuilders.com" was not true because the don't have them on that site any longer. I would have thought that having the forms pdfed on their site would have been an important support of this book... or at least a link to where the forms are.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference!.......2005-07-14

I found this book to be an excellent reference and a wonderful tool for Christian parents. First of all, the authors lead you to discover key characteristics of your unique family, including your general interests, family pace, and Christian heritage. Then you are shown how to assess the personalities of each individual in your family, along with strenghts, weaknesses and teaching tips for each type. As a result, you compose a family plan that will be the most effective way to communicate your faith to your children. The next section of the books guides you in topics that are readily understood by each age level, as well as tips and ideas for teaching those concepts to your children. I was extremely impressed with the amount of useful knowlegde contained in this book, and within days of reading it and implementing it my 5 year old daughter cannot get enough of the Bible and her questions about God!

5 out of 5 stars Focus on the Foundation of the Family.......2000-07-31

"Parents' Guide" offers parents an excellent resource for developing the spiritual life of our children. As a pastor and father, I'm glad for Trent & Osborne's research. If the foundation of a healthy society is found in the home, then the foundation of a healthy home is found in our spiritual life with God through Jesus Christ. For another book on Christian spiritual parenting, look into the recently published book, THE FAMILY CLOISTER: BENEDICTINE WISDOM FOR THE HOME, by David Robinson (New York, NY: Crossroad, 2000; 192pp., trade paperback). God bless you in your holy calling of raising spiritual children!
