Disappointing.......2007-05-16
This book was rather disappointing even though it was first runner-up in the 2004 Visionary Awards. It was on the skimpy side for the money and as far as yoga goes, the poses were few and very common ones you could find anywhere else. The meditation page was interesting though, as well as the Bear Walk. The color illustrations were nice. I really kind of expected more from the book than what the title led me on to believe was actually in the book.
For older kids.......2005-04-22
I have bought a lot of yoga books lately, looking for the best resources to use with my preschool daughter. From the reviews and the title and description of the book, this one seemed like a good candidate. It arrived today and I opened it up; right on the cover page below "cool yoga, stretching and aerobic exercices for cool kids" it adds "ages 6 - 12." Well! I wish I had known that before I bought it.
Then I looked through the book and it lost another star. Overall, I this book is geared for preteen kids to read to teach themselves yoga and I think the author underestimates the ability of this age group to tell when they're being talked down to -- this is based on the illustrations and descriptions of each pose. The text is simplistic and the illustrations even more so. They are cartoonish drawings, not even real photos of children doing the poses. Like a Fish in Water by Isabelle Koch would be much better for this age group.
An excellent exercise resource for kids!.......2004-06-28
This is a book kids will love because it makes exercise so fun, so easy and so, well, cool! What kid today doesn't want to learn all the great yoga moves their moms and dads are doing? And with plenty of solid information about what moves work which body parts, great stretching exercises, aerobic activities and a superb workout journal for kids to record their accomplishments on, this is a wonderful tool for improving health. The book's colorful illustrations help kids learn the proper body positions and poses, and the step-by-step instructions are super easy to understand.
This book is perfect for kids from 5 to 15, and even adults who never did yoga before will appreciate the simple, yet detailed directions. Get your floor mats, get on your workout gear, and get in shape, kids. This book will not only make it easy, but fun and exciting at the same time. Who doesn't want to learn how to walk like a bear???

Excellent Coverage For Kids.......2004-02-21
I Think this book is well put togather, it has a very good insight to childrens thoughts on excersise. Carol Bassett has done a beautiful job on helping children from all ages with her
New Book. She has expressed the value of Yoga & what it can do physically & mentally for any child, I think this book should win an award.
Book Description
Iyengar developed a form of yoga that focuses on developing strength, endurance, correct body alignment, as well as flexibility and relaxation. The Iyengar method integrates philosophy, spirituality, and the practice of yoga into everyday living. In The Tree of Yoga, Iyengar offers his thoughts on many practical and philosophical subjects including family life, love and sexuality, health and the healing arts, meditation, death, and Patañjali's Yoga Sutras. This new edition features a foreword by Patricia Walden, a leading American teacher of the Iyengar style.

why I keep going back to this book.......2007-01-08
After more than 30 years of yoga practice and classes from expert teachers, I continue to look for the lessons that will take me beyond where I am today. I have read this book so many times and always find new lessons in it. The first time, I probably read it through in a couple of hours. Now, I keep it on top of a stack of frequently consulted works. Most mornings, here in Brooklyn (NY) in a winter that seems an object lesson in global warming, I turn to The Tree of Yoga in the first hour after wakening. This practice reminds me to consider the important lessons I might forget: my stage in life, the stages that came before, how short life is, what is happening today, the tendency of memory to distract the mind, the power of attention, the value of self-study, etc. And tomorrow, a new lesson, a new understanding, with the next passage read carefully in the pale light of a winter morning. This is a book that keeps on giving.
Great Iyengar book.......2003-07-24
This is a great book for the new and the familiar to yoga. This compilation of lectures is a more philosophical look at his yoga, unlike the more technical books Light on Yoga and Light on Pranayama. Although these last two are indispensible, in this book, Iyengar's love of yoga shines through his words. He develops the analogy of the eight limbs of yoga as a tree skillfully and beautifully. Really excellent!
A must read on yoga principles.......2001-09-16
While being an avid yoga practicioner, the first time I got to know anything about B.K.S. Iyengar was when I picked up this book. Since then, I have done much more reading by him. Tree of Yoga was wonderful in explaining some basic principles of yoga, and the concepts behind it. The book didn't go into explaining or documenting the various asanas (for that read Light on Yoga), but instead spoke of the history of yoga, the concepts, types, what it was about, etc.
I read this book within a night, and have reread it many times since then. It's simple and inspiring, and will forever be a part of my collection.
Light from one of the great teachers of yoga.......2001-08-29
B. K. S. Iyengar achieved an international reputation with the publication of his classic Light on Yoga in 1966, which today stands as the definitive work on hatha yoga, a work made distinctive not only by the 602 photographs of Iyengar himself demonstrating the various poses, but by the detailed manner in which they are explained. He was then 38-years-old. Since then he has written several other books on yoga and lectured widely while continuing his teaching practice. He is today recognized as one the greatest of all yoga teachers.
In this book, editor Daniel Rivers-Moore has taken it upon himself to construct a narrative by Iyengar, gleaned from lectures given by the master in Europe and India during the nineteen-eighties. Rivers-Moore has done an admirable job of bringing the voice of Iyengar to the many readers who have not had the opportunity to hear him speak. The continuity of expression is maintained throughout, and the book reads as though Iyengar wrote it himself.
One sees that Iyengar is speaking to teachers of yoga as well as students. The extended metaphor of yoga as a tree is an apt one since when our practice is strong we are like a tree, solid and unshaken by the vicissitudes of life. But it is only a metaphor, one of many used by Iyengar in his teaching practice. His metaphor is not related to what is one of the most profound metaphorical images in yoga, that of the tree upside down with its branches in the earth and its roots exposed to the sun. It is said that this is the way we will see the world after becoming firmly established in yoga. Much of what we once believed (as children and young adults), we will now disbelieve and embrace the very opposite.
The value of asana, pranayama, and meditation in preventing disease and maintaining health has been established beyond doubt, and is one of the great boons humankind has gotten from yoga, and is under no circumstances to be underestimated. However, I took Iyengar's prescriptions for the further medicinal value of yoga with the proverbial grain of salt, just as I take the ancient claims of superpowers developed through the practice of yoga. His is a way of speaking that is native to India and has a long and honored tradition in the literature. One recalls the miraculous claims of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika of Svatmarama and the Siva Samhita, in which all disease is cured, and understands that the authors are speaking in a symbolic and intentional manner. What is most interesting and valuable in this book are the chapters on meditation and pranayama, and on the advice and warnings that Iyengar extends to teachers of yoga.
Iyengar's yoga is the yoga of Patanjali, whom he reveres as "the noblest of sages." It is a yoga of discipline and dedication, a yoga of power and grace developed over at least several thousand years of practice. Of the four traditional yogas of India--bhakti, jnana, and karma--it is perhaps the oldest. It is certainly the one with the widest international application since it melds well into any and every way of life, from the monastery to the streets of the city.
Iyengar has been described by some as a teacher of physical yoga only--an unfair description that he recalls and rejects in two different places in this book. On the contrary he demonstrates here that he is also a master of raja yoga, and in particular a man who understands that the prerequisites of hatha yoga are essential to the achievement of samadhi.
Those who are familiar with Light on Yoga and Iyengar's other works, will find this volume a fine addition to their library and of value because of the light it sheds on the personality and understanding of one of the great teachers of the ancient art of yoga.
foundational understanding of the simplicity of yoga.......1998-09-18
Mr. Iyengar brings the practice and understanding of yoga into everday people terms. He weaves the intricacies of yoga into a picture beginning with the tree and connecting the tree's parts to all the different parts of yoga. It is filled with simplicity and humanness. His knowledge and experience of 80 plus years is weaved together to create a complete understanding of the history of yoga to how to practice it with more wisdom. Mr. Iyengar is an inspiration to those of us who don't intend to give up family, career and laptops to live on mountain tops. He assures us that living as a married man and as a father has not diminished his practice but has enhanced it. A must for beginner and advanced students and teachers for your bookshelf.

THE TAO AND THE TREE OF LIFE.......2003-04-24
I am from México City. A week ago I bought this book and I read it. I think it's great. It was my first english book actually.
Great Book! A total must!.......2001-11-02
I have been praticing Western Esoterics (Kabbalah)for many years, and have been a student of Taoist energy work for the last 2 years. The Work by Yudelove is great and a needed bridge between Kabbalah and Taoism. The other reviewers must have read a different book then I did or had a very basic understanding of spirituality and the Eastern and Western Traditions(the guy pretending to be Manta Chia should be ashamed of himself). The information in this book is very valuable and should not be over looked. Its a must for the students of both spiritual paths.
Read this book closely. You wont be disapointed
Standard.......2001-06-11
This book shows no understanding. It is probably not even written by a Chinese. I bought the book cause I thought it was autenthic. I feel like I've wasted my money. After contacting Eric Yudelove about this, and visiting his website, I realised that this guy has more mental problems than the average joe blow. You are welcome to see for yourself and the complaints at this guys website.
A Historical Book.......2000-06-26
This is simply a historical book because the author decodes for the first time the hidden meaning of internal alchemy. He shows how Taoist internal alchemy and the internal alchemy of the Kabballah are essentially the same!
I do not know why the other reviews here are lack luster. Also Mantak Chia wrote the foreword to this book. The person below is masquerading.
Contact me if you are a fellow researcher in internal alchemy. Email: alchematron@mail.com
What has become of western mind?.......2000-04-12
Author cites some of my Taoist work but he know nothing! His english worse than mine but I no care--how can you be immortal if you live on Long Island I know not. Ah... I need legal advice, wife wants my mud huts but I give all proceeds to lawyer who use it to buy stake in soda pop bottler. Poor me. Should never have taught the gwai lo.

Decent book.......2007-06-29
The story line here is simple but great for kids to understand the power of not giving up. However the ending is a little weak and I thought the emphasis on yoga a little odd in the title & in the book itself. However the illustrations are great. Overall not a bad book for a young girl to understand how to get some self esteem.
4 1/2 Be the Tree.......2006-03-21
Young Meena is a girl of Indian ancestry who is going through a growth spurt common to many kids her age. As her mom explains, "your arms and leg are growing really fast. That can make you feel clumsy sometimes." When Meena rehearses for the school play (a retelling of "Little Red Riding Hood"), both her balance and self-esteem take a tumble. Her Dad reassures her that she needn't be perfect, "just try your best." Meena dejectedly replies, "I'm perfectly clumsy."
The next day Meena and her mom go to the "Auntie" Vohra's Indian grocery story. Snacking on some "matthi," an astonished Meena see legs shooting up, holding still, and lowering again! It's a yoga class, and Auntie encourages her to join. Through yoga practice, Meena improves her coordination, and more importantly, her self-confidence and ability to calm herself. All this comes in handy on the night of the play, especially when things don't go quite as planned.
The book is admirable on a number of levels. The richly saturated acrylic illustrations, add drama and intensity to the story. The author sprinkles a few Indian words throughout the book (there's a glossary), and depictions of Meena's home and the market show Indian decorations, and a colorful assortment of foods. The Indian influences add interest and authenticity without overpowering or stereotyping Meena, who is, after all, a child of the West. I thought that one of Ruth Jeyaveeran's pictures (the rehearsal) breaks the fluid narrative; she covers too many story elements in one illustration, but overall text and pictures mesh well.
"The Happiest Tree" shows a few yoga poses, and emphasizes the slow progression and the importance of the teacher's help. Luckily for Meena, who plays a tree in the play, Auntie Vohra teaches "Tree Pose" and Meena uses this to calm herself and use imagery during the play itself. After several classes, Meena thins to herself, "I can change my body by how I feel inside...IF I am quiet inside, my body will be still. That's what yoga is really about." Well, yoga is about many more things, and the book tends to deemphasize yoga and the mind, but perhaps the physical is more relevant and understandable for a young reader. It's nice to see a book about yoga for kids, especially one that equally informs and entertains. The author lists three nonfiction books ("Yoga for Children," "Kid Yoga: Fun with a Twist," and "Yoga for Kids") for those who want to pursue the topic.
a happy tree.......2006-01-18
The Happiest Tree shows how yoga can help children calm down. Meena has a part in the school play. She fears that she may be too clumsy to even stand still enough to play a tree. She learns to control her anxiety at her yoga lessons at her Auntie's place. The story is slightly didactic in that some yoga lessons are cleverly snuck into the narrative, but the insertions are not interruptions to the flow of the story. The artwork is somewhat folksy, but the simplicity of the illustrations are rather appealing.
Meena is Lovely as a Tree.......2005-11-10
Menna is one of those kids who walks into a room and things fall over. She can tumble over her own feet. In fact, she's so excited about her class play The New Improved Red Ridinghood, that she trips, falls, and spills the paint while helping build the set. Worse, when she and her mother go to an East Indian grocery store to shop, Meena manages to knock over a bag of rice. Now she's really miserable. Encouraged by the store's owner, whom everyone calls Auntie, Meena signs up for children's yoga. As she works through the various poses, she discovers a mind-body connection she didn't know she had. Then her teacher, Mrs. Jackson tells her she must be a trree in the play. Meena can't stand still, until she realizes she might apply something she she learned in yoga class to her part. Then on opening night, she confronts a disaster with her costume. Can she use yoga principles to overcome the problem? If so, she stands to become THE HAPPIEST TREE in the production.
THE HAPPIEST TREE: A YOGA STORY comes from the pen of talented children's author Uma Krishnaswami. Uma has the knack of catching a child's feelings, growth, and discovery as she develops Meena from a shy little girl who wants to hide from the world, to a confidant actress who might just handle the unexpected emergency. Ruth Jeyaveeran's illustrations work well with Uma Krishnaswami's text, presenting Menna's environment in a rich palette of East Indian colors and objects. As a result THE HAPPIEST TREE: A YOGA STORY offers a universal problem for the heroine to solve, by drawing on a solution from a specific cultural background. The combination offers a rich reading and visual experience to anyone who wants it.
ok.......2005-10-20
Meena is so excited that her class is putting on a play about little red riding hood. She gets the part of a tree in the play and she is really upset. She thinks that she is too clumsy to play a tree. Later she finds out about a yoga class and decides to try it. The class gives her confidence and she ends up doing a great job in the play.
The little girl in the book feels like a lot of kids today. She felt like she was too clumsy to to the part in the play.
Children who enjoy yoga and/or acting will enjoy this book.

Enhanced with an informative Afterword by Frederick Franck.......2001-04-29
Couched in a "New Age" approach to good health, The Wellness Tree: The Dynamic Six-Step Program For Creating Optimal Wellness by Justine O'Brien begins with the imagery of the "Tree of Life", and then moves on to devote whole chapters to the role of mental attitude, breath, nutrition, physical movement, rest, and solitude in achieving and maintaining optimal health. O'Brien then moves on to the utilization of visualization techniques and offers his readers a sixty- one point exercise designed to help them "recreate" themselves. The last two chapters deal with "The Future of Wellness" and "Relationship with Life". Enhanced with an informative afterword by Frederick Franck, extensive Notes, a Bibliography for further study, and a comprehensive index, The Wellness Tree is an impressive, thoroughly "user friendly" instructional which is ideal for the non-specialist general reader wanting to improve their physical, emotional, and even spiritual well-being.

high praises.......2002-07-14
this is an excellent yoga book. i got it from the library, it being the only yoga book they had, and i have used it for my own yoga practice. i am overjoyed by the way this book is written. i'm 31 years old and this book is great for children of all ages.
Little model.......2002-02-04
Being a mom of 2 boys I look back on this book with fond memories. The original copy lays on my coffee table within reach of my children as well as the neighbors children who love to imitate the images. Most of these images are me as a child of 8. My kids get a kick at seeing me in these fun yoga poses.
Children Love It.......2000-04-05
Be a Frog, a Bird or a Tree is an excellent introduction to Yoga. I had no background in Yoga but felt very comfortable using this book to introduce a Yoga program to fairly large groups of six and seven year olds. They were excited to see the progress they made in learning each new pose. It is a clearly explained and illustrated program that very easily adapts to teaching young children and they enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed teaching it.
