Great book for students or resource for couselors!.......2007-07-19
This book uses Hollands theory of interests to help the teen discover what they want to do. The book helps prioritize interests and translate them into potential careers. This book is an excellent resource from self-discovery to building your resume to interviewing and negotiating an offer. This book is easy to read and understand and the information is useful and current. I highly recommend this book to any teen trying to determine their career path or any adult working with teens with plans to help them determine their career paths.

it is an easy guide to help others and yourself to overcome daily crisis.
Excellent Resource For The Young Adult.......2006-07-12
As a part-time personal career coach for college students trying to identify their major, I was thrilled to see the "What Color Is Your Parachute" franchise has created a version for the late teens/early twenties demographic. Despite the best efforts of college career counseling offices, I still encounter many young people needing help identifying career options that complement the person they are. Resources such "What Color Is Your Parachute" provide young adults with critical learnings they can use to educate themselves about the importance of their personal interests, their strengths, and their skills to ultimately make an informed career decision. And it doesn't hurt if the parents of the young person have read this (or similar) works, as well, so they can be educated coaches for their young adult. In many cases, parents have invested time, emotion and money into getting their child into an institution of higher learning and keeping them there, so their participation in this stage of their child's life is a logical next step. Trust me, parents - they want your involvement more than they let on.
As a HR Manager, the regular version of "What Color Is Your Parachute" has been a resource I've relied on and recommended for the past 15 years to those affected by unexpected downsizings and by the `I want to do something different but I don't know what' bug. After reviewing this new version, I feel confident young people will benefit as much from this work personally as I have professionally. Highly recommended for young people who seek answers to the simple but complex question, "What's next for me?"
Definitely a crucial book for any teenager who cares about his/her future!.......2006-06-02
Wow! I wish I had this wonderful book when I was a teenager.
I remember very vividly when I came across Richard Bolles' 'What Colour is Your Parachute', it was way back in the late 80's/early 90's. At that time, I was embarking on a journey to find out about what I wanted to do with the second half of my life.
Naturally, I was attracted to this new book when I saw it in my local bookstore. I am pleased to note that the author has now teamed up with Carol Christen, a career strategist & Jean Blomquist, a college counseller, to come out with this great guide to help teens zero in on their favourite skills & apply that knowledge to get the most out of school, set goals & pursue their dreams.
More importantly, this book actually brings back some sweet memories of what I have perused - pondered about & worked out - for the first time.
It is filled with interactive exercises, provoking worksheets & interesting profiles of young adults who have found their uniques paths in life, all beautifully structured in a three-part layout:
- Part I: Discovering Your Dream Job;
- Part II: On the Way to Your Future;
- Part III: Landing Your Dream Job & More;
With a track record of some thirty years in the career advising arena, the lead author's 'What Colour is your Parachute' has been recognised as the world's best selling job hunting book. To me, it is very much more than that - it's about you & your future; about exploring who you are, what's important to you & what you like to do.
I fully concur with the authors: Life is meant to be lived to the fullest.
In order to achieve a fulfilling life, all of us must do what we love & love what we do!
To sum up my review, this is definitely a crucial book for every teenager who cares about his/her future.
Attention: Mums & Dads, please go & buy this book for your teenaged kids as soon as possible!!! You will be ambly rewarded in the long term.

A "must" for any non-native business English learner.......2007-09-06
Although many of the idioms and expressions Ms. Gillett brings to the page are typical in non-business usage, the huge number of idioms and expressions related to American business English (as opposed to British business English--in some cases they are quite different!) is an asset to any student of this subject.
The contents are grouped in chapters by common subject, e.g. Discussing a New Ad Campaign, Motivating A Co-Woker, and Conducting a Performance Review. Learning new idioms and expressions is made simple by an easy-to-read dialog that demonstrates (and can be used with a partner) the usage of each idiom, and then is followed by self- or partnered-checking and review. The accompanying CD clarifies pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation.
I highly recommend this text to all--native or non-native speakers of English--who want to fast-track themselves into usage of the American business vernacular.
My qualifications to review this book? I teach this subject, among others, at UCSC Extension.
An excellent book for improving business English.......2006-06-29
I used this book and CD system with my students, a group of adults in an ESL class at a community college. They really enjoyed it! They found the dialogues interesting and realistic. The idioms in this book are excellent. The exercises are helpful too, and we appreciated being able to go to the publisher's website (Language Success Press) and getting supplementary exercises for this book for free.

An excellent resource.......2006-10-06
I highly recommend this book. I run a HR department by myself and since it is just me, myself, and I - this book gets lots of use; just to get another perspective on how something should be handled or feedback "so to speak."
It is written in a simple, clear, and direct manner. Very easy to use and understand.
This is easy ! .......2006-04-12
I bought this book last year while coaching an HR professional. What I didn't realize is how much I needed to have this information on hand here in my office. Time after time my staff and I will use this as a resource when questioning an issue with pay, hiring, firing, what is fair and what is right for our employees. I have also found I will use when I suspect a client might be in a grey zone with an employee. A must have for small business owners! Alicia Fruin

An Essential Desktop Reference
A smart, informative, entertaining guide to a serious subject...filled with FAQs that you sometimes didn't even know you needed to ask! Quickly became an everyday reference that I turn to again and again. Set up in an extremely reader-friendly fashion (perfect for those of us who don't have a lot of patience or time to spend looking things up) that makes sense of the language of HR. Once I read it, I bought it for all the managers in my team and recommend it to everyone who has ever encountered an uncomfortable HR situation (or hopes to avoid one!)
It's a start........2006-02-17
Not a bad book. It totally ignores Employee and Labor Relations for the most part. No discussion about unions as I recall. Could cover contingent workers more too. It's a good place to look-up something and from there, go to the Internet.

Book Description
"Murach's OS/390 and z/OS JCL" teaches JCL statements and coding techniques for all versions of IBM's OS/390 operating system, including the latest release, called z/OS, that runs on IBM's new z/900 servers. This book lets you reach a new level of professionalism in a minimum of time. It takes a practical approach to JCL that zeroes in on everyday jobs, so you can learn to code significant job streams in a hurry. It's filled with syntax and examples, so you have plenty of guides for coding JCL on your own. And all the content is presented in our distinctive paired-pages method that saves you so much training and reference time, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.
But that's not all
This book is much more than JCL code, though. It gives you an insight into mainframe processing that any programmer or operator will benefit from. You'll find out about the hardware components that your JCL is controlling. You'll find out about the operating system operations that affect the efficiency of your jobs. You'll find out how file-handling facilities, like VSAM, SMS, and HFS, fit into the overall picture. In fact, you'll get a complete view of the facilities that OS/390 and z/OS offer.
The result is, you won't just learn how to code JCL but you'll know why you code the parameters the way you do. And as you understand more about your system, you'll find yourself working at a level of confidence and competence that many experienced mainframers lack.

Good Book on Mainframes.......2007-07-26
Good reference book, I have it by my desk and use it often.
I wish it had some info on FTP, may be next release.
Endorsing other people reviews.......2007-04-10
I must agree with the others reviews. This book is an invaluable resource that will save your time reading those boring, 1000-page, IBM Redbooks. It gives a nice introduction on IBM Mainframes, operating system concepts, as well mastering JCL skills. After reading this book you will feel more confident to go deeply into the IBM documentation and learn the extra skills needed to your area (databases, networking, programming, etc.).
Excellent z/OS JCL reference resource.......2006-06-29
This book is a tremendous reference resource for anyone who works in the IBM mainframe environment, especially for those who don't work with JCL on a daily basis or for those seldom-used tasks for which you may not have any "canned" JCL readily available. I strongly recommend this book as an invaluable JCL reference document.
Now I Understand Mainframes.......2005-09-18
My job requires me to write scripts on Windows and Unix platforms. I have no problem writing Windows batch files or Unix shell scripts to copy or move files, change permissions, create and delete directories, write results to log files, etc.
Recently, I was asked to write a mainframe script. I was told to write this script in Rexx. When I looked into Rexx, it was just another scripting language. It was not hard to understand how it worked. However, unlike Windows batch files or Unix shell scripts, there was more to writing a Rexx program than just knowing the Rexx language - I needed JCL to run it!! I had seen JCL before. I knew each job started with a JOB card and that it executed PROCs and PGMs. I also knew that I did not know nearly enough about JCL to write JCL to do what I wanted it to do. That's when I went to Amazon and found this book.
Not only did this book confirm what little I did know and correct some misundertandings I had, it went far more deeply into JCL to describe how to use many features that I did not know existed. One of the best features of this book is that it provides some background information on how mainframes work and the naming conventions used. This information is useful when JCL coding is introduced because the reader has a better idea of what the JCL is used for and what it happening with the various statements. JCL coding is not even introduced until Chapter 4!!
After the background information, this book then goes through the various aspects of JCL coding. The basics of what I needed to know to run my Rexx program were addressed as were many concepts that I can now put in my "bag of tricks" for future projects. I am sure most of our mainframe programmers do not know most of this material.
This book is not limited to JCL. It also describes how to compile Cobol programs, how to copy, move, sort, delete and print datasets using common mainframe utilities. It even has a chapter on Unix System Services. Prior to reading these chapters, I had no idea how to copy a dataset to a new dataset on the mainframe using a batch program. For me, this was a trivial issue on a Windows or Unix platform. I now know how to do it on the mainframe. This book clearly explains the process. It also provides coding examples for all concepts described throughout the book.
If you are new to computing, I don't think you want to start with the mainframe as the first platform you learn. However, if you have some computing background from working with Windows and Unix, then I highly recommend this book to get a solid foundation on how to run batch programs on the mainframe.
In the past, I had to ask a coworker to help me when I needed to work with JCL. I purchased this book so that I could code some JCL for myself to run my Rexx program. Now, not only does my Rexx program execute flawlessly, I also have a thorough understanding of how to write mainframe batch programs for future projects. Who knows, maybe my coworkers will start coming to me with their complex JCL coding problems!!
Excellent Book.......2005-04-01
I am a mainframe programmer for 8 years and never had a good book like this one. I wanted to have a good book that will give me all the information I need so I selected this book after reading the review comments of this book. When I received this book and checked the contents I was disappointed so I thought I should return this book. But after started reading this book I was so surprised to see a book that was so organized and well explained. It was like when we study we make important notes of the concept which will be useful to refresh for interviews.
But we don't need to do this if we have this book as after a detailed explanation , there is a picture and description .
So I recommend this book who wants to train/learn/refer in their job and I couldn't wait to write this comment after reading for 3 days.

Phillip Kerman's Macromedia Flash 8 @work: Projects and Techniques to Get the Job Done approaches learning from a different perspective than the typical book on a web graphics application. Rather than simply describing how to use each feature of a product, Macromedia Flash 8 @work introduces key tools in a single chapter and then moves on to what you really want to know -- how to use Macromedia Flash to complete the projects you're likely to face every day on the job.
You'll get step-by-step coverage of how to complete 10 common projects chosen by a panel of Flash users. Plus, tips, tricks, and notes will provide you with the information you need to apply what you learn on these projects to others you'll undoubtedly be asked to create at work.
Customer Reviews:
If you really want to learn how to make things work in Flash, this is the book for you because.......2007-08-03
I have tried to learn Actionscript for around 5 years and bought several books about this theme so far. So, this year I told myself: "You love Flash... So you HAVE TO understand Actionscript because you need to be more professional!". Ok... So I started studying again from the begining searching on the internet for the meaning of terms like variables, events, methods, object, classes, etc... just to check if I had left some important concepts behind. But even knowing those concepts, I still could not find myself writing code from the scratch! This book from Kerman cleared my mind and taught me how to implement code within the scope of a real Flash project. It guided me troughout the whole process of making a Flash application and made me understand how a Flash professional like Kerman deals when facing to everyday's Actionscript's challanges. So that's really a good choice for you to understand how you can implement a Flash project from the basis. Important: read every page carefully. If you dont't undestand a single line, try do do it so. You will realize that you have a priceless book in your hands to really get your job done!
Can't recommend.......2007-06-26
I wouldn't say the book is "totally useless" but the decision the author made to serve up ActionScript without explanation because he thought we "didn't want to get our hands dirty" was a bad one. I see in his reply that he says he never claimed to do otherwise, but you don't realize this until you have read two chapters.
I would prefer it if he had given us less projects but gone over the code in his .as files for us.
Also, the author should understand that no one buys a book to get ready-made projects. We are buying these books to learn how to do these things on our own. If I just wanted a ready-made project I could just Google what I want and find one of the countless FLA examples people are good enough to share online. When I buy a book, its so I can learn to do it myself.
Better books elsewhere... Not for those trying to Learn quickly.......2007-05-14
With all due respect to the author, (who obviously knows his stuff quite well), this book is terrible for learning. The author, however, does not promise to teach you, which is in its way his safeguard. You are not meant to be taught, so do not expect to learn. The information the book contains is mostly lots and lots (and lots) of discussion ABOUT Actionscript put in a way as though Actionscript gurus would sit around discussing functions and classes and whatnot. If you are not up to reading 'about' Actionscript, skip this book. The first 57 pages bored me to tears... I guess I suffer a bit too much from A.D.D. to be able to sit and read 'about' Actionscript. Instead, I want to LEARN Actionscript, so that perhaps one day I, too, can be a guru sitting around, drinking my Red Bull and discussing Actionscript like some people discuss nuclear fission or jet propulsion.
If you are the type who can handle reading and reading and reading in order to learn some minor information regarding a complex scripting language, best of luck to you with this book. However, if you're (obviously) dull minded like myself and cannot learn from reading paragraph after paragraph of stuff like this:
"...although the third-pary product Captionate...is needed to inject Caption and Marker cue points, these cue point types are definitely worth including in this list...." then this book is not for you. For me, however, just tell me WHY and show me HOW.
When will someone write a book which is clear and concise, which demonstrates step-by-step in as few words as possible how to do something (other than tweening and drawing) in Flash? I've got a dozen books from which I've been able to learn a few things, but for the most part I find myself falling asleep reading the same thing over and over again. I don't want theories on how I can write a function and an array; I don't want simplistic examples that leave me wondering how to do something a bit more complicated. I need real world examples, real world learning. Write a complex function and teach me how to do it! Don't tell me I can use XML, show me HOW to use XML. Be creative! Inspire me! I have projects to do, and don't have time to sit and read and read and read... I don't have time to cross reference with the Flash Bible to try to figure out what you're talking about, either.
Lynda publishes some better books, (in particular to learning Actionscript in a real-world example), the Beyond the Basics book is excellent.
Not worth it a nickel.......2007-04-18
I bought this book last month due to some good feedbacks. But when I read, it seems the book is too much unnecessary words just to make it look thick but the actual content is thin. I would suggest to learn from the help section of the flash program itself. It's much more clear and right to the point not like this book. From there then google up and you will find a lot of more better tutorials than this book and best of all, it's free!
great book, shows how it is done.......2007-02-26
I enjoyed this book for the very fact that it was project based, using Flash 8 features as well as traditional uses. As an experienced Flash user I appreciated the format, but this would not be a good book for a novice. I enjoyed the use of XML in projects as it allows users to leverage the capabilities of Flash to a whole new level.
I bought this book as I enjoyed his other book "Macromedia Flash MX 2004 for Rich Internet Applications" as it too explored great but practical uses. There are not enough project based books out there as most Flash books are aimed at novices that offer a general overview, but lack substance that you can really chew on.

Get off by yourself and go through this book chapter by chapter, doing the exercises, and by the time you are finished, you will feel confident about your ability to do CL programming! Excellent reference book also!

A Must-Read For Every Working Woman!.......2007-04-16
"Take This Book to Work" is a great read, not only for young professionals, but for those who may need a reminder that women can (and do) conquer the workplace woes. The book is written in a fun format that is easy to read. Chapters are marked clearly which makes for a quick reference guide when a question arises. I flipped directly to the chapter "How To Ask Smart Questions During an Interview to Help You Land the Job" before my interview with a successful PR firm. Not only did I feel more confident, but I got the internship!
Not Just For Women: For Everybody!.......2007-02-22
As a career consultant, I will refer clients to this book. I find male clients have questions similar to females and it is important to avoid categorizing a workplace challenge as "women only."
That said, this book fills a need among today's workers. Those who are completely new to a situation will benefit by following the guidelines. You could do worse!
But it's important to realize that when it comes to career strategy, we rarely have simple answers. You're taking a risk regardless of what you do and almost any strategy can backfire. No guarantees!
I particularly like the section on interviewing for information. Few books spell out the differences between new and experienced career changers. As these authors say, senior executives rarely go out on "interviews for information." They're more likely to have coffee or drinks and talk. And at the senior level, you're more of an equal. You may be able to help the person you're meeting -- or you will someday.
We have some areas of disagreement. But as I remind my own clients, every advisor or consultant will be fallible. We all make mistakes and nobody's right all the time. Here are 3 areas where I take a different slant on career change and job search:
(1) When you are job hunting, the authors suggest calling to ask if your resume was received, and then using the opportunity to sell yourself. I say that strategy can pay off handsomely but can also backfire. I wouldn't encourage clients to try to sell themselves to Human Resources. HR typically acts as a gatekeeper: they're only interested in ways to say no.
If you reach the hiring manager you're more likely to win with this strategy.
(2)You need to relocate for personal reasons and your company has a branch in your destination city. The authors suggest you mention your personal reasons ("My mother has cancer") with the request. I encourage my own clients to avoid disclosing personal details. Let's get real: you never know when this information will be distorted and/or used against you. You give up a lot of power when your company knows you aren't marketable because you won't move.
(3) When searching for a mentor, remember the rules change if you approach self-employed professionals. It's not uncommon for mentors to pay for advice and guidance. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between mentors and coaches.
On another note, the authors encourage readers to join Toastmasters or take a public speaking ocurse to gain confidence. Your experience will vary a great deal depending on the club or class. For advice on telephone negotiation and one-to-one meetings, I would recommend hiring a coach or consultant.
The book has gotten rave reviews from famous names. The back cover includes endorsements by Kelly Ripa, Robin Roberts and Barbara Corcoran, all admirable women. I'd like to hear from more in-the-trenches career consultants and recent career changers and job seekers, both men and women.
Speak Up and Take Control at Work!.......2006-10-10
Tory and Robyn, working women around the world thank you for this invaluable book!

Customer Reviews:
Helpful to a Point.......2006-05-15
This was a basic read, for thse already into the methodology explained throught the book. Would be a useful tool for someone just starting out. I would recommend expanding on the disaster recovery portion, and possibly adding a section on managing in the non-profit arena.
Very basic.......2004-02-23
This book is written only for the very basic beginner in IT. If you have been around an IT department for any length of time, you will find it difficult to pick up any new management thoughts in this book. For example, the entire topic of ERP systems is covered in 2 pages.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.......2003-05-04
Technology can change all it wants but the fundamentals of being a good IT Manager have changed very little. This book hits all the major areas of focus from staffing and budgeting to infrastructure and disaster recovery.
The section entitled "Certification: How Do I Know Its Worth" applied 10 years ago, and still applies today. Right on the money and a good brief for an IT Manager building a team. Also, small but extremently important policy issues like email and security are included.
I do think that the book included slightly heavy doses of technical information such as a full page table of different memory technologies as well as an entire section entitled "How Do I Configure a Server". These would service a Network Administrator or Engineer just fine but an IT Manager ? Not so much. Don't let this detract you from the overall picture though. Too much information is certainly better than not enough.
I have to be honest, I didn't read this cover to cover. But for someone who has spent time as an IT Manager in the past and one who is looking at doing it again, I was able to re-establish concepts and draw on new tools that, no doubt, provided benefits.
Too broad and lacks depth.......2002-08-30
This is something for a new manager with little experience in not only systems administration but supervision. This book may give a clue to someone who has just stepped into such a position but provides little depth and direction. Unfortunately, there isn't any one book out there as management is a very complex role that encompasses many disciplines, any one of which would be a volume in itself. I was very dissappointed and I find the other reviews misleading.
full of practical examples!.......2001-03-02
This book is full of practical examples. It is useful to people who have in-depth programming knowledge but no idea how to do a budget or interview job candidates. I found this book specially timely, given that my team is composed of several technical professionals who are now considering a move into management. The information in the book is well layed out and quite accessible.
