    Book Description

Spiritual practices, or awakenings, have an impact on brain, mind and personality. These changes are being scientifically predicted and proven. For example, studies show Buddhist priests and Franciscan nuns at the peak of religious feelings show a functional change in the lobes of their brain. Similar processes have been found in people with epilepsy, which Hippocrates called "the sacred disease." New research is showing that not only does a person's brain activity change in particular areas while that person is experiencing religious epiphany, but such events can be created for some people, even self-professed atheists, by stimulating various parts of the brain. In this far-reaching and novel set, experts from across the nation and around the world present evolutionary, neuroscientific, and psychological approaches to explaining and exploring religion, including the newest findings and evidence that have spurred the fledgling field of neurotheology. It is not the goal of neurotheology to prove or disprove the existence of God, but to understand the biology of spiritual experiences. Such experiences seem to exist outside time and space - caused by the brain for some reason losing its perception of a boundary between physical body and outside world - and could help explain other intangible events, such as altered states of consciousness, possessions, alien visitations, near-death experiences and out-of-body events. Understanding them - as well as how and why these abilities evolved in the brain - could also help us understand how religion contributes to survival of the human race. Eminent contributors to this set help us answer questions including: How does religion better our brain function? What is the difference between a religious person and a terrorist who kills in the name of religion? Is there one site or function in the brain necessary for religious experience?

This book was recommended to me by a friend. I had her book first and loved the feeling I had when I read it so I bought one for myself. I gave mine to my sis and bought me another. If you have a heavy heart, you need this book and if you want to FEEL GOD present in your life. Keep it close to you!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Healing!.......2003-10-31

We're reminded that as Christians, God is with us and "There is power in His presence." God is active in the lives of believers. He told us He would be. "Ability, talents, opportunity, material resources are really not ours. They are God's investments in us. And like any wise investor, God expects dividends," the author tell us. What He expects, we're told, for one thing, is to serve others. Bernard Shaw is quoted as saying, "A gentleman is one who puts more into life than he takes out."

The next time you're unjustly criticized, consider what he says about the source of such comments. "It is a sure sign of an inferiority complex when a person tells of the faults of another."

On significance, he tells us that no one was born apart from the will of God, that we existed in the mind of God before we were physically formed in the womb.

Faith is a necessary component of the Christian life. William Carey is quoted from a sermon he gave in 1992, "Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God."

Examples of Jesus meeting practical daily needs are presented. The author couples this with inner longings and desires and writes, "...He (Jesus) knows we have desires and wants beyond our bare necessities. We are not wild beasts."

Near the conclusion he has a quote worth pondering. It helps a person see beyond self. Allen writes, "No person ever really lives until he has found something worth dying for."

This book will improve you life. It will help you to connect with everlasting realities. Its truths will transform your perceptions. You thoughts will be healthy as you medidate on its precepts.

I have been placed on many different psychiatric drugs which seemed to do more harm than good and given many different diagnoses as though no two doctors could agree. I have finally come to the conclusion that for some of us...prayer and meditation may be a more miraculous medicine and less barbaric and less of a waste of time. I bought this book many years ago and it somehow got lost. I could not find it until today. I bought it today and can't wait to start back on the path I began a long time ago but fell off of. I really did feel it gave me hope and helped me think more positive and better things came to me when I had applied what I read in this book devoutly.

The type of book that needs to be read and re-read. Let Go and Let God provides guidance, explanation and direction. Take the time to read some of chapters out loud to your children.

    5 out of 5 stars Truly Inspirational.......2000-09-08

This book epitomizes the way to realize personal healing and fulfillment, even though it was written almost a half century ago! The principles still apply today and they are exquisitely and inspirationally set forth by the author.

We are given the desire to pray and restore our faith in God, which we may have forgotten how to do. The results have important implications in both the physical and spiritual world. The author tells us that each day is new and we have the ability to change and be renewed. We are able to be absolutely forgiven by Christ - a very reassuring and comforting thought.

Kudos. This book establishes and emphasizes the important things in "life" on Earth (and here-after).

    5 out of 5 stars "Inspirational and motivating"-Nicole R........1999-08-11

I found this book to be very motivating and it really stirred a desire in me to further my faith..hard core faith...in Christ. Although at times it was confusing to tell what practices Mr. Cliffe was talking about doing, and it is hard for me to picture the type of praying and strong belief he talks about needing, I think after reading and thinking some more I found out the answers. It wont be easy but I am going to try what he suggests. I think this is a very informative book for anyone, even if you dont feel as faithful as a minister, priest, or deacon...we all need healing, happiness, and we certainly all need to learn to love and think good things...and Mr. Cliffe talks about this thouroughly, with example of how full faith has helped heal people. Give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars We'd all be better people, if we all read this book........1998-10-27

You don't need to be a holy-roller to appreciate the concept of the author's points in Let go, Let God. Because we weren't born with instructions, sometimes it's hard to make the right choices and go the right direction--regardless of our choice of (or) faith. But, this book boldy speaks to all races, religions, and faiths. If we all took the time everyday to truly invest in self-improvement, instead of investing time in finding fault in others we would all grow greater spiritually, physically, financially, and of course most importantly, Godly. Let Go, Let God has something for everyone and I am sure it should be in all home libraries. It helped me see where I've grown and where I need to change.

    Book Description

Making the Gods Work for You presents internationally renowned author Caroline W. Casey's remarkable doctrine of Visionary Activist Astrology. In this reverently irreverent mystery school disguised as a book (in which each of the planetary gods is a professor), we are invited to think of our lives as spiritual detective novels. For example, Venus teaches us that our affinities and quirks are clues to our unique mission and contribution to the world. The astrological language of the psyche is a tool for deciphering and revitalizing this sense of mission. Casey teaches you how to expand your range of intimacy with the ten parts of yourself represented by the planets, here called gods. You will learn how to use this language to reverence and feed the forces of your psyche that connect you to very real external forces. This book intends to catalyze a movement to engage the imagination of all people with a sense of humor and a desire to do collaborative good in the world.

Expanding on the ideas first presented in her popular audiotape series, Inner and Outer Space, Casey explores the archetypes at the heart of human relationships, aspirations, and spiritual quests. In an engaging narrative enlivened by stories, fables, exercises, and meditations developed through her work as an astrological counselor, she provides a practical system of personal and collective liberation. Making the Gods Work for You provides us with innovative principles to live by and rituals inviting us to become active, dynamic participants in the dance of life. We can then become increasingly conscious players on the team of creation, capable of sharing our gifts with the world at this crucial historical time.

Amazing book. Offers a very elevated and intelligent way of integrating astrology into one's physical/spiriual/emotional life in a proactive way. Astrology is the weather and we are the sailors.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2006-01-16

Caroline Casey's book is not a technical read! And yet... she conveys the intricate pattern of planetary influence with a depth that keeps me coming back to this book. She has stories that include ways of honoring particularly intense transits. For so many, learning astrology is not what they want to do. They want to understand their chart. If you have been told that you are going through a transit and you want more practical information for what that might look like... this is your book. If you are an astrologer... this book brings it back to the fine patterns in the sand that you just do not see in the other - very fine - books designed to break it down by study. What you will not get is a cooking recipe for planet in sign to house.... etc. I find myself coming back, frequently to this book to regain the respect that can be lost in too much study!

1 out of 5 stars Great introduction to subject matter, no follow through.......2004-06-15

This is a terrible book! There, I've said it. Very bold words to say in light of all the other rave reviews. I hope I can explain myself...

"Making the Gods Work for You" tries tackle more than your basic sun-sign astrology book. It covers your birth chart, which is comprised of all the planets positions relative to your birth time and location.

To me this means covering three items:
    1) The role and psychology associated with each of the eight other planets, the sun and the moon.

    2) The types of astrological interplay. This is a neat way of saying it means something special when three planets align in a triangle, or four planets in a square, or two planets "crossing" each other, and so on.
    3) How to determine your own birth chart.

As you can guess the book falls down in at least one of these categories for me.

The good news is the book excels at the basic explanation of the planets; associated personality types, inner strengths and struggles, etc. Very well written and a quite enjoyable read.

The book provides a reference to a website where a free, basic birth chart can be obtained online.

However, the book fails utterly at connecting the two. There is no explanation of the meaning behind the planets' relative positions. None. Nada.
Maybe all nine planets were aligned at my birth time. Or they form two perfect squares. Who knows what that means? Not you from reading this book.

Of course you _could_ pay money on the website to get this explained... ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Don't loan this book to anyone!!!.......2003-12-21

A very intelligent, practical friend of mine makes astrology part of her life. (How did she know i'd find my dream job in June?) Well, to understand astrologicial thinking better, i bought this book. Very lively writing, clear, with quality humor. The author writes many things i've heard previously only from my friend, not from other astrology books. I read bits of it over the phone to my friend, later brought it to her. Now she's having a great time reading it, and i'm still waiting to get it back....THAT's a sign of a good book!

5 out of 5 stars Suitable for beginners but good for any level astrologer.......2002-08-26

This book is a delight. Caroline Casey has a degree in semiotics and a marvelous wit, describing planetary energies through anecdotes, myths, and sacred wisdom, all with a light heart, and a reverent irreverence.

Perhaps it's best to share a quote. I take this from the section on Uranus:

"To grow shiitake mushrooms, one plants the spores in a stick and lets it sit for a year. Then you must strenuously pound the stick to awaken the dormant life within. For the same reason, during midlife and Uranus transits, we get pounded. Like the spores, we are comfortably snoozing when suddenly, "What the...?!" Thump! Thump! Thump!

We invoke Uranus by posing the question, "If I feel agitated, restless, or on the brink of a discovery, where in my life do I want lightning to strike?...."

If you've got your basics down and want to know more about the planets, or about your transits, this book is such a good choice.

    Book Description

In this beautifully written and moving book, author Steven Leder uses his 15 years of experience as a religious leader and spiritual counselor to tackle the questions with which all of us wrestle on a daily basis: How to keep money from being a focal point, how to understand the difference between wants and needs, what kind of moral code to live by while seeking the comfort that money brings, how to teach children about values involving money, and more.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2006-06-18

There is little "traditional" wisdom here one would expect from a spiritual leader. The advice is simplistic and available any weekend in the financial section of most newspapers. Some theories advanced here are just plain way out. Sorry, I expected more and was very disappointed

5 out of 5 stars Worth Its Weight in God.......2004-03-30

No matter how much, or how little, money you have, you will be enriched by this timely tome. Like Rabbi Leder himself, 'More Money Than God' is hip, funny, engaging, and wise. It helps us reexamine our relationship to money, and how money affects us and our relationships to each other. Too many of us let money guide our lives. Rabbi Leder teaches how age-old spiritual guidance -- and Judaic principles -- can help you sort out your own morals and values when it comes to things you really can't put a price on. Rabbi Leder provides just the right "light touch" so that 'More Money Than God' comes across as good old-fashioned shmoozing, not sermonizing. But the lessons here are timeless and invaluable, for young and old. What Rabbi Leder has to tell us is simple, but not simplistic. You and your family will benefit mightily from this book. I bought a copy for my teenage daughter, and I've heard her quoting from it to her friends -- enough said. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars How to be generous and grateful.......2004-01-30

This is an exceptional book. Rabbi Leder writes with humility and wisdom about a crucial topic: In our money-crazy society, how can we stay focused on what's truly important? So many people have everything they want but nothing they need. With humorous as well as bittersweet examples, he writes that we need to work less, love our families more, and "send the elevator" back down for people who have less. Life is short: Make it count. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Very rewarding book.......2003-12-22

This is such a good book. I loved it. It is a perceptive and compelling book that stayed with me long after I read it.
More Money than God is subtle and profound and gently offers guidance to enhance your life. It can be easy to lose sight of what really matters in life and this insightful book redirects our gaze from amassing wealth to appreciating those people around us who we love.

This is a powerful book and I highly recommend it.

    Book Description

The Greek goddesses have inspired female consciousness for more than 3,000 years. Representing aspects of the soul, they have shaped the lives of countless women over time. The profound emotional experiences of womanhood-being a daughter, being sister, becoming a wife, bearing a child, experiencing sexual passion, love, and jealousy-are as timeless as the myths themselves. Conversations with the Goddesses explores these myths, revealing the personalities of seven female divinities-Aphrodite, Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Hera, Hestia, and Persephone-to help women grow to understand their own inner-feminine patterns and learn to balance and navigate their existence. Learning to embrace the wonderfully unique characteristics of these immortal beings blazes a path for readers to seek freedom and wholeness. Literary reflections give each goddess her own voice, shedding light on her distinctive qualities, while paintings, sculpture, and other artworks explore such emblematic icons as Aphrodite's scallop shell-symbolic of the heady fragrance of female enticement. More than just a beautiful paean to the goddesses, this powerful volume brings these unforgettable women down from Olympus and enables them to touch the lives of modern women.

5 out of 5 stars Claim Your Goddess Power.......2006-03-22

The author is of Greek heritage and brings an intimate cultural account of how the Goddess archetypes can be used as symbolic icons in life. It is similar to the Jean Shinoda Bolen book which focuses on the goddesses archetype in the context of Jungian psychoanalysis. So this book is an introduction to how myth can be a healing philosophy. Agapi has talked about how "Athena" helped her heal a broken heart when she had trouble letting go and she brings the goddesses into a practical context. This is a book to read in combination with Dr. Bolen for anyone keen on doing "inner goddess work".

5 out of 5 stars A book for every woman .......2004-09-07

Agapi Stassinopolous has written a wonderful book. It is both informative and inspiring. In my opinion, Conversations with the goddesses should be read by every woman on Earth- because almost everyone can benefit from it. Readers can view this book as either a self-help book or merely a book of greek myths... but the former is a much more exciting way to read it. Although I am only 15, this book has helped me change the way I view the world- and more importantly- myself. I suggest that no one younger than 15 read it, but Conversations would probably be perfect for a college student- or gosh, it's perfect for every woman! You can learn so much about... everything. I think it would be wise to read it slowly, so you can absorb it all, and try out the activities as you go along. But, if you're like me,once you start, you'll want to read the whole thing right away!

    1 out of 5 stars WHAT..........................?!.......2002-12-05

5 out of 5 stars Goddess wisdom from a worthy bearer!.......2000-09-20

This is a profoundly moving and beautiful study of Greek goddess archetypes that I wish I had written! Like Ms. Stassinopoulos, I have been fascinated by Greek mythology from childhood. Although my scholastic background is in Russian language and literature, I have studied ancient Greek and minored in classical studies when I got my BA at Reed College, which features a rigorous year-long course on Greece, Rome, and the Middle Ages that is mandatory for all freshmen. My lifelong desire to visit Greece was finally realized two years ago when my husband and I spent our tenth anniversary touring Athens and the Greek Islands.

I now work for the City of West Hollywood and continue to find seemingly infinite applications for goddess wisdom. In March of this year I based a well-received Women's History Month presentation upon Ms. Stassinopoulos' book. I adapted this talk for the American Biographical Institute/International Biographical Centre's 27th Millennium Congress on Arts and Communications in Washington, DC which was attended by delegates from 44 nations. The Women of Achievement panel was held on Independence Day (how apropos!) and the illuminating discussions of Artemis, Athena, and Hestia found in CONVERSATIONS WITH THE GODDESSES served to ground my scholastic and civic accomplishments. Women (and men) from all over the world responded with almost overwhelming enthusiasm to these timeless insights and Ms. Stassinopoulos can be assured that Hestia's torch is being carried into the new millennium by these global citizens. This was one of the peak experiences of my professional life and I am sure that CONVERSATIONS will be of similar benefit to many other readers.

As an activist I especially appreciated Ms. Stassinopoulis' many references to 19th- and 20th-century feminists. I found the illustrations and literary reflections to be an especially valuable feature of this wondrous book, which I cannot recommend highly enough and will give as a gift to all the important women in my own life.

4 out of 5 stars reminds me alot of jean shinoda bolen's book..........2000-08-21

the author covered in this book the exact same goddesses jean shinoda bolen covered in her book goddesses in every woman. am i saying one is better than the other? no,i am not because they are different this book shows us how to communicate with these goddesses. bolen's book teaches us which goddess our personality is most like. i reccomend both these books very highly.
