Where God and Science Meet [Three Volumes]: How Brain and Evolutionary Studies Alter Our Understanding of Religion (Psychology, Religion, and Spirituality)
Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0275987884 |
Book Description
Spiritual practices, or awakenings, have an impact on brain, mind and personality. These changes are being scientifically predicted and proven. For example, studies show Buddhist priests and Franciscan nuns at the peak of religious feelings show a functional change in the lobes of their brain. Similar processes have been found in people with epilepsy, which Hippocrates called "the sacred disease." New research is showing that not only does a person's brain activity change in particular areas while that person is experiencing religious epiphany, but such events can be created for some people, even self-professed atheists, by stimulating various parts of the brain. In this far-reaching and novel set, experts from across the nation and around the world present evolutionary, neuroscientific, and psychological approaches to explaining and exploring religion, including the newest findings and evidence that have spurred the fledgling field of neurotheology. It is not the goal of neurotheology to prove or disprove the existence of God, but to understand the biology of spiritual experiences. Such experiences seem to exist outside time and space - caused by the brain for some reason losing its perception of a boundary between physical body and outside world - and could help explain other intangible events, such as altered states of consciousness, possessions, alien visitations, near-death experiences and out-of-body events. Understanding them - as well as how and why these abilities evolved in the brain - could also help us understand how religion contributes to survival of the human race. Eminent contributors to this set help us answer questions including: How does religion better our brain function? What is the difference between a religious person and a terrorist who kills in the name of religion? Is there one site or function in the brain necessary for religious experience?

The next time you're unjustly criticized, consider what he says about the source of such comments. "It is a sure sign of an inferiority complex when a person tells of the faults of another."
On significance, he tells us that no one was born apart from the will of God, that we existed in the mind of God before we were physically formed in the womb.
Faith is a necessary component of the Christian life. William Carey is quoted from a sermon he gave in 1992, "Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God."
Examples of Jesus meeting practical daily needs are presented. The author couples this with inner longings and desires and writes, "...He (Jesus) knows we have desires and wants beyond our bare necessities. We are not wild beasts."
Near the conclusion he has a quote worth pondering. It helps a person see beyond self. Allen writes, "No person ever really lives until he has found something worth dying for."
This book will improve you life. It will help you to connect with everlasting realities. Its truths will transform your perceptions. You thoughts will be healthy as you medidate on its precepts.

Truly Inspirational.......2000-09-08
We are given the desire to pray and restore our faith in God, which we may have forgotten how to do. The results have important implications in both the physical and spiritual world. The author tells us that each day is new and we have the ability to change and be renewed. We are able to be absolutely forgiven by Christ - a very reassuring and comforting thought.
Kudos. This book establishes and emphasizes the important things in "life" on Earth (and here-after).

Making the Gods Work for You: The Astrological Language of the Psyche
Caroline Casey Manufacturer: Three Rivers Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0609802747 Release Date: 1999-08-24 |
Book Description
Making the Gods Work for You presents internationally renowned author Caroline W. Casey's remarkable doctrine of Visionary Activist Astrology. In this reverently irreverent mystery school disguised as a book (in which each of the planetary gods is a professor), we are invited to think of our lives as spiritual detective novels. For example, Venus teaches us that our affinities and quirks are clues to our unique mission and contribution to the world. The astrological language of the psyche is a tool for deciphering and revitalizing this sense of mission. Casey teaches you how to expand your range of intimacy with the ten parts of yourself represented by the planets, here called gods. You will learn how to use this language to reverence and feed the forces of your psyche that connect you to very real external forces. This book intends to catalyze a movement to engage the imagination of all people with a sense of humor and a desire to do collaborative good in the world.Customer Reviews:

One of my favorites.......2006-01-16
Great introduction to subject matter, no follow through.......2004-06-15
"Making the Gods Work for You" tries tackle more than your basic sun-sign astrology book. It covers your birth chart, which is comprised of all the planets positions relative to your birth time and location.
To me this means covering three items:
1) The role and psychology associated with each of the eight other planets, the sun and the moon.
2) The types of astrological interplay. This is a neat way of saying it means something special when three planets align in a triangle, or four planets in a square, or two planets "crossing" each other, and so on.
3) How to determine your own birth chart.
As you can guess the book falls down in at least one of these categories for me.
The good news is the book excels at the basic explanation of the planets; associated personality types, inner strengths and struggles, etc. Very well written and a quite enjoyable read.
The book provides a reference to a website where a free, basic birth chart can be obtained online.
However, the book fails utterly at connecting the two. There is no explanation of the meaning behind the planets' relative positions. None. Nada.
Maybe all nine planets were aligned at my birth time. Or they form two perfect squares. Who knows what that means? Not you from reading this book.
Of course you _could_ pay money on the website to get this explained... ;-)
Don't loan this book to anyone!!!.......2003-12-21
Suitable for beginners but good for any level astrologer.......2002-08-26
Perhaps it's best to share a quote. I take this from the section on Uranus:
"To grow shiitake mushrooms, one plants the spores in a stick and lets it sit for a year. Then you must strenuously pound the stick to awaken the dormant life within. For the same reason, during midlife and Uranus transits, we get pounded. Like the spores, we are comfortably snoozing when suddenly, "What the...?!" Thump! Thump! Thump!
We invoke Uranus by posing the question, "If I feel agitated, restless, or on the brink of a discovery, where in my life do I want lightning to strike?...."
If you've got your basics down and want to know more about the planets, or about your transits, this book is such a good choice.

Conversations With the Goddesses
Agapi Stassinopoulos Manufacturer: Stewart, Tabori and Chang ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1556709420 |
Book Description
The Greek goddesses have inspired female consciousness for more than 3,000 years. Representing aspects of the soul, they have shaped the lives of countless women over time. The profound emotional experiences of womanhood-being a daughter, being sister, becoming a wife, bearing a child, experiencing sexual passion, love, and jealousy-are as timeless as the myths themselves. Conversations with the Goddesses explores these myths, revealing the personalities of seven female divinities-Aphrodite, Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Hera, Hestia, and Persephone-to help women grow to understand their own inner-feminine patterns and learn to balance and navigate their existence. Learning to embrace the wonderfully unique characteristics of these immortal beings blazes a path for readers to seek freedom and wholeness. Literary reflections give each goddess her own voice, shedding light on her distinctive qualities, while paintings, sculpture, and other artworks explore such emblematic icons as Aphrodite's scallop shell-symbolic of the heady fragrance of female enticement. More than just a beautiful paean to the goddesses, this powerful volume brings these unforgettable women down from Olympus and enables them to touch the lives of modern women.Customer Reviews:

Goddess wisdom from a worthy bearer!.......2000-09-20
I now work for the City of West Hollywood and continue to find seemingly infinite applications for goddess wisdom. In March of this year I based a well-received Women's History Month presentation upon Ms. Stassinopoulos' book. I adapted this talk for the American Biographical Institute/International Biographical Centre's 27th Millennium Congress on Arts and Communications in Washington, DC which was attended by delegates from 44 nations. The Women of Achievement panel was held on Independence Day (how apropos!) and the illuminating discussions of Artemis, Athena, and Hestia found in CONVERSATIONS WITH THE GODDESSES served to ground my scholastic and civic accomplishments. Women (and men) from all over the world responded with almost overwhelming enthusiasm to these timeless insights and Ms. Stassinopoulos can be assured that Hestia's torch is being carried into the new millennium by these global citizens. This was one of the peak experiences of my professional life and I am sure that CONVERSATIONS will be of similar benefit to many other readers.
As an activist I especially appreciated Ms. Stassinopoulis' many references to 19th- and 20th-century feminists. I found the illustrations and literary reflections to be an especially valuable feature of this wondrous book, which I cannot recommend highly enough and will give as a gift to all the important women in my own life.
