"God as a jealous, punitive white Anglo-Saxon male with a long beard and a longer arm lacks appeal for many contemporary women," writes Joan Borysenko. In an attempt to address and mend the rift between women's experience of God and how God is presented through male-dominated religions, Borysenko offers this book of feminine exploration. Initially, Borysenko speaks to healing one's relationship with a seemingly judgmental or exclusive God. She then moves beyond how religion may or may not have failed individual women, into how the feminine collective tends to know and touch God.
Not surprisingly, Borysenko speaks to women's intuition and creativity as surefire lifelines to God. Women rely on relationships as a means to spiritual growth, explains Borysenko, whether it be with lovers, friends, or children. She also examines women's icons--from the gentle and nurturing "Our Lady of Guadeloupe" to the fiery goddess Kali who births and then devours her children, just like Mother Nature does. On an organizational level, this ambitious book can seem a bit scattered--an easy fault to ignore. As more and more women join together from all religions and orientations to tell their spiritual stories and claim their paths to God, books such as these make excellent guides and companions. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
More and more women are abandoning the religious beliefs they were raised with to search for a more authentic-and feminine-spiritual path. In this evocative book, Joan Borysenko-a leading authority on women's spirituality-shows women how their spiritual discontent can pave the way to a deeper, more meaningful faith.

TAKE WHAT YOU NEED FROM THIS BOOK.......2007-01-30
I am a 47 year old woman in the midst of some rather large challenges regarding my personal and professional life. Growing up, there were no books in my house nor was there teaching of spirituality. There was no communication between my parents and there was no love shown to me and my sisters. Regarding A Woman's Journey to God, the reviews that suggests you pre-judge this book as "disappointing for the intelligent woman" and one that represents God as "a God for little girls" is disturbing to me. For me, this was a powerful read; It gave me strength in my femininity. I would suggest that in considering this book, not all information will be relevant to your particular lifestyle but that you may see in it the value of anothers experiences and perspective.
I personally read everything I can with the understanding that none of us are the same and we can grow more intimately and live our lives more deliberately by taking what we value from the authors intent and leave behind what we don't find beneficial. For me "Intelligence" has little to do with what we "need".
very superficial approach to spirituality.......2006-07-01
I'll keep this review as short as possible due to this book being a very disappointing read.
I did read it with anticipation and an open mind hoping to uncover some gems of wisdom or valuable insights, what I found however as I read on was disappointing beyond words.
Joan Borysenko has a way of talking things down, making many generalisations along the way and often belittling other views on spirituality. This might have been forgiven if she had delivered a strong counter argument and provided us with a solid read however, Borysenko really did not support her theories and argument in any convincing way shape or form at all.
This book will also be quite disappointing for the intelligent woman, it should be re-titled A girls journey to God.
I was expecting more, much more, what I was left with was
a feeling of being let down instead.
I recomend potential readers to look elsewhere as this book plainly fails to deliver.
A microscopic glimpse into the soul of a woman........2003-09-08
The author of this book, Joan Borysenko, is a leading authority on women's spirituality, which confounds me, because I did not know there was such a thing. An authority on spirituality I mean, since spirituality - well, read the book, because it is very well written and it is the story of a woman who is searching for the perfect fit between herself, her physical "me" self, and her spiritual self. The woman and her husband have no problem traipsing the continents in quest of the answer to their why am I heres and who am I's, and it makes for very interesting reading. I can't imagine how it is expressed from a soul to a written page as it attempts in this book, but what I enjoyed was the various descriptions of all kinds of practices, cults, religions, sects, and the quest itself is daring and adventuresome. These are good people, this is a good book, but I wondered why they were looking. Isn't the answer in the mirror?
FOR EVERY WOMAN WHO HAS QUESTIONED HER SPIRITUALITY!.......2002-12-26
I had this book for a long time and just never was drawn to it. After reading THE SAI PROPHECY, I felt a real need to read it. It answered questions I had not even formed, and led my mind to solutions and possibilities I had never imagined. A real catalyst and a must for every woman on a spiritual search. Thank you, sister Boryshenko!
Absolutely excellent........2001-09-25
Honest self-examination without self-absorption. I highly recommend this book to any woman -- particularly any mid-life woman -- who is exploring what it means to be a spiritual creature, and any man who looks at the women in his life and wonders what might be going on for them.

Silvana Paternostro, born into a well-to-do Colombian family, was taught to be a traditional, virginal, obedient Latina. Sent to the United States to be educated, Paternostro has since remained, tied to her Colombian family but unwilling to fall in step with her culture's expectations. Now a widely published journalist and fellow at the World Policy Institute, Paternostro has revisited Colombia and several other Latin cultures to boldly uncover the quietly damaging sexual contradictions of the Latin world she left behind.
Here, where well-bred women must be virgins before marriage, monied young men are ritually deflowered by prostitutes at their fathers' expense and often continue to frequent brothels while courting their future wives. While married women are discouraged from educating themselves about sex and birth control, many husbands at every class level secretly pay for sex with women, boys, men, and transvestites. The consequences for traditional Latin American women, Paternostro discovers, are grim: married monogamous women are at far greater risk of being HIV-positive than female prostitutes, who can at least insist on condoms with their clients. Women in Latin America have, on average, more abortions than women in the United States, frequently at risk of their lives. Paternostro condemns not only the deceit fueling these epidemics but the larger culture that keeps many Latin women obedient and powerless. This devastating, important first book concludes with an investigation into the relationships of Latin American men and women who are being raised in the United States, with the author's hope that this "new world" might offer a boost to the condition of fellow Latin women. --Maria Dolan
Book Description
"Paternostro tells the stories our mamis always told us not to tell and in doing so, she brings to light the secret sexual heart of our Latin culture. I loved reading this book."--Julia Alvarez, author of Yo! and How the Garca Girls Lost Their Accents
As the daughter of the privileged Colombian elite, Silvana Paternostro was programmed to go from convent school to cocktail parties, obedient to God and man, never questioning the injustice she saw all around her or demanding a voice in public life. She left Latin America twenty years ago, but recently returned to "look critically at our Church, our Constitution, our daily lives." Told in a lyrical and personal voice, but backed up by solid research, In the Land of God and Man draws a new map of Latin and Latino America--from Quito, Ecuador to Queens, New York--exposing its hidden cultural undercurrents and bringing women out of the factories and favelas, the brothels and the boardrooms, and allowing them to tell their own stories.

Paternostro's Guilt.......2007-07-02
I have just begun reading In the Land of God and Man: A Latin Woman's Journey by Silvana Paternostro, which one reviewer calls "a cross between a daring anthropological study and a vivid manifesto of the inequalities and abuses women still suffer in most Latin American countries." Paternostro is a Colombian woman born into the elite ranks of Bogota's aristocracy who emigrated to New York in the 70s. The book is a personal and political memoir that touches upon the sexual double standard of Latin American culture and its larger implications (the AIDS epidemic, economic inequality, domestic abuse, etc). Paternostro is talented in interweaving lyrical personal narrative with research and political history, but she is haunted by a compulsion to rid herself of the obvious guilt that plagues her from having been born into the elite upper-class. If she could stop defending her right to speak about the plight of women in Latin America and just speak, the work would benefit. Even so, it is definitely worth reading and difficult to put down.
Inside-Out.......2007-02-04
Silvana Paternostro's determination to expose the troubling ways in which the culture of machismo threatens the health and well-being of Latin American women and families is admirable, though at times a little repetitive. An upper-class Colombian who has migrated to New York, Paternostro might well be viewed as more of an outsider than an insider by Latin Americans, a "Western feminist" determined to attack the culture in which she was raised. But although her critiques are strong, they are also largely justified. In the Land of God and Man includes both interviews with health professionals and men and women from all classes of Latin American society. She reveals the troubling phenomenon of men having sex with men to prove how macho they are, and then spreading HIV to their wives--a problem widespread enough that a housewife in Latin America is more likely to get AIDs than a female prostitute. This concern needed to be documented and publicized even more than Paternostro can do.
However, the book is not perfect; given that Paternostro is a journalist by profession, I would have expected her to have collected more interviews from a wider range of countries-there are surprisingly few with women of the lower classes, and none with female prostitutes. Additionally, the book has no references, even when she cites health statistics or quotes Latin American politicians. I can understand protecting the anonymity of the subjects interviewed on sensitive topics, but when writing a non-fiction expose, you should cite whenever possible.
This book is well-worth reading for a better understanding of the effects of machismo on individuals and society, but it is not quite deep enough an analysis to be a classic. Paternostro is not the Friedan or Beauvoir of Latin America.
Critique Of The Machismo And Sexual Hypocrisy Of Traditional Latin American Societies.......2006-09-13
I expected this book to be more auto-biographical. But, in fact, only the first chapter is primarily about Paternostro's own transformation from an aristocratic young woman in Colombia to a liberal American feminist. Instead the other chapters are based on her interviews with various people - an impoverished teen mother in Brazil, a wealthy Guatemalan man who transmitted AIDS to his wife and daughter, transvestites in Colombia, etc. But Paternostro's theme remains loud and clear - that Latin American culture is dominated by machismo and a sexual hypocrisy that harms all its people, but especially women.
I read this book because my wife is originally from Ecuador and I am always interested in learning more about the culture she grew up. My wife moved to the United States at age 31 and we didn't get married until she was 38 and I was 36. She is moderate to liberal in her political beliefs and agrees with Paternostro that traditional Latin society is machista (sexist) and difficult for women. She also agrees that they should offer better sex education there, especially as it relates to birth control. But my wife is still intensely proud of her Ecuadorian heritage and would probably feel that Paternostro is too harsh in her attacks while ignoring the many positives aspects of traditional Latin society.
However, I do understand the strident tone of Paternostro's arguments. This is because the negative effects of Latin machismo and sexual hypocrisy are so damaging that a strong, clear voice does need to be raised against them. It was especially interesting for me to read this book when I did because we were visiting my wife's brother and sister in law in California. The brother moved to the United States when he was only age 10 and the sister in law was born here. But they still seemed intensely focused on "training" their daughters in the domestic arts of cooking and cleaning. Meanwhile the son was pretty much allowed to run free as "prince of the castle." Her brother also openly admitted he would be much stricter with the daughters than the son. To him this was just "common sense." But to me it was very troubling.
So, as Paternostro discusses in her final chapter on "Northern Ladies," many Latin immigrants are choosing to continue their traditional "machistic" practices in the United States. But my hope is still that a majority of people, throughout the world, will give up the sexist, hypocritical beliefs of the past and build a new way of life based on gender equality and sexual freedom.
Garbage.......2004-12-03
This book is just an attack on conservative policies in order to push the secular liberal agenda. I thought the book sucked
A must-read!! You won't put it down until you finish it!.......2003-02-03
Silvana Paternostro does an amazing job at explaining the sexual culture in Latin America. The data she gathered shows how the lack of sexual education has become an issue of public health, especially endangering women.
I think this book is a brave account that gives voice to what so many women in Latin America live through and that exposes the double standards of the machista culture that unfortunately prevails.
As a Latin American woman, I felt she describes the social norms that I grew up seeing around me but that are seldom ackowledged or thought about in our societies.
The book reads as a novel would, full of personal anecdotes and fragments of interviews. One of the best books on Latin American culture that has been published lately.

A helpful guide.......2000-12-08
I first read this book about 2 years ago when my mother died. It helped me understand how everything in my life is under the direction of a loving God. At present, I'm at another crossroad in my life and have again picked up this book. I've finished four chapters and already am encouraged and revitalized in my walk with God. Ms. Heald uses paraphrased Bible stories and her own life experiences to weave together a helpful and east-to-read guide on the journey many us have chosen. If you truly want to draw closer in your walk with God, don't hesitate to get this book. You won't regret it.
thought provoking inspiration for spiritual journey.......1998-07-21
This is an easy to read yet thought provoking book which provides inspiration for the journey to being close to God and holding His hand through our life 's journey on earth. The author uses many personal examples of lessons she has learned from God about trusting Him, going to Him for everything, letting God lead the way since He knows how to get to our ultimate destination. I enjoyed this book so much I have already given it twice as a gift to friends.

Book Description
"In her inspiring, vividly composed and always faithful book" (Susan Muto), Karen Karper describes a world where life is rich in being rather than in having. Selected as a Catholic Book of the Month, Where God Begins To Be fulfills Murray Bodo's observation that "...instead of myth fabricated from a few fragments, we have here the details--the nitty-gritty, muddy details--of a hermit's daily living." Karen is a "Seer who brings you along with her, joyfully." (Richard Rohr) "In deftly drawn vignettes, Karper's story, told with simplicity and gentle honesty, is one of faith deepening, beauty awakening, and love discovered." (Gerald May)
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring!.......2006-02-19
The title of this book is from Meister Eckhart: "Where clinging to things ends, there God begins to be." What I love about Karper's book is the way God's presence glimmers in and through ALL things: mud, collapsing sheds, grasping multiflora, escaped cats, untimely bills, you name it, Sr. Karen seems to have to struggle with it! So, while the book beautifully explores a life of solitude in a quiet hermitage in West Virginia, it's totally applicable to any life, anywhere, even the busiest. Because we all need to stop clinging to things and allow God to begin to be present, don't we?
Utterly empowering.......2001-04-01
While the book is just over 116 pages long, it is a gem and if you can find a copy GRAB IT. The Author Karen Karper was a member of the Poor Clares often associated as the female branch of what St Francis of Assisi started the Franciscans. In 1989 she opted to take a leave from the monastery to attempt a life of solitary and frugality. With a ten year old Bronco and a small amount of money she set out. She had no idea where she was going. At the request of two Nuns who lived in an Appalachian Valley area called Colt Run holler (Spencer W Virginia) she accepted their invitation to visit. This would be her welcome to what would become a way of life. Learning to live amongst people who did not know many Catholics, not to mention learning to use an outhouse, pump water and deal with everything from ankle deep mud to snakes (copperheads)in the wood pile. She writes about getting enough money to drill a new well, since the old one was unhealthy. To learning to literally do everything herself, be it repairing tin roofs, or trying to grow a garden. Learning that there is solitude and then there is solitude. That living as a woman alone on a remote area would test ones faith in God as far as protection and wisdom goes. Any woman who wants to see that being over the age of 40 or 50 doesn't need to stop you from testing yourself will love this book. It has a nice Thomas Merton Zen feel and a Mother Earth News feel that I especially appreciated.
And this is a book that I read and re-read on a rainy or sunny day and a book that changes my life everytime I read it.
Excellent! A quiet contemplation of simple living!.......1998-11-20
This book is wonderful for anyone who seeks a short period of quiet in the midst of their busy day-to-day life. As a writer and someone who loves nature, I found amazing connections in Sister Karper's story, despite the fact that our lives are obviously very different. This book took me to the mountains of Appalachia, and made me want to stay there forever--with plumbing, however!

A Warm Read that Challenges and Nurtures.......2002-11-14
If you are looking for a book that shows the tensions between the real and the "expected," between the inner and the outer, between "chasing God" and "being chased" by God and then resolves those tensions by giving a spiritual vision of wholeness that embraces the paradoxes, then this book is for you. That is not to suggest that Chasing God is a metaphysical or philosophically dense treatise on life. The way the author writes about her relationships with family and friends; about the birth of her son; about the growing romance with her second husband ring so true that the reader experiences the relationship as well. Chasing God is a journey through one woman's life. It is a book written with clarity and beauty.
Cunningham is particularly strong when she describes places. The reader is with her in her high school in Wisconsin, with her in the convent, with her in Spain, with her as she races to a doctor with her new friend Jerry who is suddenly and unexpectedly ill. Cunningham's reflections on being ill, herself, with cancer and her subsequent change in feeling about folks who are not fully well are worth the price of the book.
Likewise, this book is for those who are, at heart, artists
and for whom the daily responsibilities of life have squeezed the artist thin. Cunningham, through her own experience, challenges the reader to nurture the creative within and shows the connections between creativity, spirituality, and healing.
For many of us used to looking for reality "outside," the author of this book asserts not only that the really real is out there, but that the "real thing comes from inside" as well and challenges us to listen.

Chasing God - Shirley Cunningham.......2002-11-06
This is a powerful book for those that want to understand more about their spirituality. We focus a lot on understanding religion but we do not take enough time to understand our relationship with God. Chasing God opens up a whole new understanding about God and God's love, reaching out toward us. We often hear the phrase, if you want to change the world change yourself...well this book is a step in the right direction. I read the book in one day, I could not put it down.
Chasing God.......2002-11-03
I found Chasing God to be an inspirational story for women who are in the midst of change in their lives. It is a story of spiritual and personal growth which I feel to be one of the best stories I have ever read. Chasing God will keep you interested from page 1 to the end with Shirley Cunningham's exciting life story. If you enjoy autobiographies, this book is a must for you!!!
Chasing God.......2002-10-28
This book is interesting and inspiring for many reasons. Shirley Cunningham uses her literary talents to create a real page turner. Her journey into spiritual discovery has numerous twists and turns, that I found very intersting. This book conveys that through the ups and downs of life, God is ever-present and loves us very much. This highly personal book is a must have for anybody in search of the divine!
Chasing God.......2002-10-25
A wonderful memoir filled with vulnerability, compassion and strength. A must for anyone who is seeking the genesis of their spirituality.
Book Description
Anyone can make a wrong turn in life--and, by God's grace, anyone can make a U-turn. This brand-new collection of stories, the third in the acclaimed God Allows U-Turns series, focuses on stories by, about, and for women. My heart broke time and again while I read stories of abuse, addiction, shame, guilt, and fear, writes series creator Allison Gappa Bottke in her introduction. In equal measure I rejoiced with thanksgiving as contributors shared how faith in God brought hope and healing to a hurtin heart and soul. Readers will be encouraged to know that their trials are not unique--and that circumstances can, by God's grace, change for the better.

The Best Anthology.......2002-08-28
God Allows U-Turns: A Woman's Journey is heartening experience. I would recommend reading onr or two stories a day as a part of your devotions or have one as a bedtime snack. They are an encouraging reminder of God's love for us, no matter what.
A Treasure.......2002-08-23
What a treasure! I've just started reading, "A Woman's Journey". Women everywhere share the same hopes and dreams. I feel a real connectedness with the women in these stories. I celebrate their triumphs, share their sorrows, and learn life lessons. A rare gift that continues to give hope and heal the broken.
**HOPE, FAITH & LOVE**.......2002-08-21
I just finished reading the third book in this series. The true stories in this book were filled with such hope. These ordinary people showed me what real faith and love was all about. I was deeply touched. I had to have many tissues handy while reading this one. I'm looking forward to buying several copies of this one for family and friends for Christmas. This volume really reaches out to woman of all walks of life. I related to many of these stories. I can't wait for Volume four to come out at the end of the month. (Aug, 2002) American Moments.
Best Friends.......2002-08-21
I've read every "how-to" book there is on the market and never felt as inspired or as encouraged as I did after reading "A Woman's Journey". That's because every woman in this book is ordinary -- they're not psychologists, or therapists, or magical, mystical healers. They are simply like you and me; like my best friend; like my next-door neighbor. They struggle, they fail, they pull themselves up only to fall down again. Yet every one of them has something extraordinarily uplifting to say about life, about love and about faith. I've given "A Woman's Journey" to every significant woman in my life, along with a quite a few men who have the desire to better understand and appreciate the feelings of their wives, girlfriends, mothers and daughters. I'd like to thank each and every author who contributed to this anthology. God bless you for sharing your hearts along with your hope.
Women are Wonderful.......2002-08-21
Reading this book made me laugh, cry, and feel proud to be a woman. These stories reflect triumph in the lives of the writers and transmit hope to the readers.
The reader won't find judgment or preaching here, just women with the insight to experience God's wonder. You can't read this book without increasing your ability to accept new gifts from God.
I'll be giving this book to women in our family as they graduate, marry and celebrate other important events in their lives.
