Book Description
Christian Essentials Made Plain and Simple
God doesn’t call every Christian to go off to seminary, but there are certain matters of doctrine—that is, the church’s teaching—that every Christian simply must know. Theology is important because what we believe affects how we live. If you’re a relatively new believer in Jesus, or if you’re a more mature Christian looking for a quick brush-up on basics of the faith, Christian Beliefs is for you.
This readable guide to twenty basic Christian beliefs is a condensation of Wayne Grudem’s award-winning book on systematic theology, prized by pastors and teachers everywhere. He and his son, Elliot, have boiled down the essentials of Christian theology for the average layperson and made them both clear and applicable to life. You will learn about the Bible, the characteristics of God, what it means that we are created in the image of God, what God has done for us in Christ, the purpose of the church, and much more. Each chapter includes questions for personal review or group discussion.
These truly are twenty basic beliefs that every Christian should know. Wayne Grudem is a master teacher with the ability to explain profound truths in simple language. He is a man of deep conviction and theological passion—and those who read this book will be both educated and encouraged in the faith.
R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky
Based on Systematic Theology, this summary will certainly help beginners with Christ to get the hang of their faith.
J. I. Packer, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia
As Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology contracts into a compact book, I do not lose my enthusiasm for the truth he loves and the clarity of his words.
John Piper, Bethlehem Baptist Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Comprehensive and yet easy to Read!.......2007-08-25
I really enjoy this book because it was so easy and to the point.
Every topic from Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology is covered and instead of a thousand pages it is covered in about 150 pages. VERY SIMPLE READ - I would suggest this book for developing lesson plans or providing it to a believer who has a lot of questions and you want to encourage them to review their bible before they review people's opinions. This book is in no way exhaustive but hits very key points so as to "get the picture". This book take theological doctrine and tightly packs it. For instance, a chapter about God is condensed into 5 pages just as any other doctrinal issues.
If you are looking for a quick read, that is not for the serious study this book is it. Additionally, I use this in accord with my Grudem's larger book "Systematic Theology".
I also would HIGHLY SUGGEST The Moody Handbook of Theology by Paul Enns to supplement this book.
Required reading for any informed Christian.......2007-04-19
If you don't know these 20 basics you need to read this book. If you do know them, read it anyway--the way he communicates these ideas is classic, clear and concise. There are longer books on theology out there, but there are not any this clear and concise that are also this good. Great for Bible Study classes, small groups, personal study, even just to read.
one every christian should read.......2006-12-23
This book is very God centered, and Bible saturated. Grudem takes the basics and explains them so that you can have a foundation to build from. This book is great for a new believer. Grudem takes each chapter and explains the subject so that every one can understand them. And them if you want to know more information on a topic you can refer back to his Systematic Theology book. The chapters in this book paralleled that book well and make it a great way of learning more about the topic. I would say this one should be in everyone's to library
Excellent overview.......2006-12-08
Grudem's book is an excellent overview of the basics of Chistian beliefs from a Reformed point of view. The chapters are between 3-5 pages, just long enough for a new Christian to read and digest the material without getting bogged down in a lot of detailed discussion. That is not to say that this book is light on doctrine or details. All of the fundamentals are there. While it is written from a Reformed point of view, the book is applicable for all evangelical Christian perspectives. I know Pentecostal churches that use this book for new Christian classes. I am using this book as a text for a Christian Foundations class, and it is working well. For a new Christian, or for someone wanting to know the basics of Christian beliefs, this is a great starting point. For more in-depth study, I would also recommend Grudem's book Bible Doctrines, which is the next step up, and also his book Systematic Theology, which is extremely readable and detailed.
Terrific!!!.......2006-11-02
20 Beliefs is very easy to read. The Grudems present the get material in an organized, logical manner nailing the basics of Christian doctrine. It's a resource that I will turn to again, and again.

Excellent introduction.......2007-08-05
McGrath suggests that THEOLOGY: THE BASICS (TTB) be taken as an introduction to his more extensive work on Christian Theology. And what an introduction it is. I was surprised, frankly, at how thoroughly engaging this book is. I expected a dry text that I would need a Ph.D. in theology or philosophy to love. Not so. TTB is written in a lucidly accessible style, which is nonetheless intelligent and mature. One seeking to learn about Christian theology can do no better than start here. "Seasoned" Christians, too, will find here a rich source of intellectual and devotional content for study and contemplation. I fully intend to read this thoroughly and then graduate to McGrath's more extensive CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY. And for those who appreciate books for their own sake, the cover is lovely and the typesetting is very legible and pleasing--the book is a pleasure to hold as well as to read.
I agree with another reviewer that the absence (oversight?) of the Apostle's Creed text is peculiar, and a minor flaw.
Theology: The Basics.......2007-03-11
I found this book to be an excellent resource for the beginning theology student. McGrath's explanations are easy to understand and the selected readings give a great overview of the history of theology through the ages.
understanding theology .......2005-07-08
The basics theology book is an excellent book for those studying theology for themself or at the university. The terms selected are the ones most Christians use but don't understand.
This book will remove false understanding and offer more information about their belife system.
Theology: The Basics.......2005-02-26
Something I have kept in the back of my mind for awhile now is to be on the alert for a short book delineating Christianity in its broadest categories. For me, the utility of such a book - were it to exist - would consist in having something to give to friends and acquaintances from different religious backgrounds, who are interested in what Christianity is generally about. Without wanting to sound melodramatic, let me say that Dr. Alister McGrath's book, _Theology: The Basics_, has filled that gap and freed up some memory in the back of my mind.
_Theology: The Basics_ is arranged very simply around an ancient Christian formula known as the Apostles' Creed. What McGrath discusses, whether faith, God, creation, Jesus, salvation, the Church, or heaven, is found in germ form at least in the Apostles' Creed.
As a scholar of historical theology, McGrath manifests a depth of understanding for Christian thought and its development over the centuries with each subject he treats. Frequent mention is made of such thinkers as Augustine, Aquinas, Calvin, etc. Some readers will find helpful the selected Christian texts, which are placed at the end of each chapter, accompanied by a few questions for further reflection. This feature makes _Theology: The Basics_ amenable for discussion groups.
From the perspective of someone, who might like to distribute a copy of this book to non-Christians, let me offer three reasons in support of this gesture: Firstly, _Theology: The Basics_ is a clear presentation of Christianity with the selected subjects dealt with in a mature fashion. Secondly, McGrath showcases an ecumenical spirit citing from Protestant and Roman Catholic sources alike, though perhaps the majority of citations come from the former. Thirdly, _Theology: The Basics_ is a non-threatening book. McGrath is anything but in the reader's face. Listen to how he ends his book: "...some of you will choose to end your studies here. If so, I would like to thank you for allowing me to accompany you on your exploration of theology, and wish you well in the future." (2004, p. 138)
Theology for everyone..........2004-09-27
Alister McGrath is an author I rely upon frequently for helping to teach theology. He has a broad-based, ecumenical approach useful and accessible to Catholics and Protestants; firmly grounded in the long history of Christendom and intellectual developments arising out of the early church forward, there is much that Orthodox Christians would also find interesting and helpful. His works on Christian spirituality, historical theology, and his excellent one-volume introduction to theology are constant references of mine.
This particular volume, produced by Blackwell (one of my favourite presses, particularly for theological works), is meant to serve as both an introduction and survey of the basic themes of Christian theology. McGrath takes the Apostles' Creed, one of the creeds of the early church that most every Christian agrees upon as a statement of some authority, as the overall framework for this text. In his introduction, McGrath explains the different methods of studying theology (highlighting particular theologians, or tracing the history), and some of the disadvantages of working with those methods. He explains the basis of following the Apostles' Creed to highlight ideas, which in turn draws in discussion of particular theologians and theological schools, denominational differences as applicable, and the major source elements of scripture, tradition, and reason.
The Apostles' Creed itself is rather short and basic - each line of the creed focuses upon one aspect of the faith, and McGrath uses these lines as the topics for the chapters. Elaborating on these basic themes, McGrath pulls in discussion and references from biblical texts and images, major theologians from past and present, and general trends in history. The development of the topics is broadly drawn, proposing more questions than answers throughout. The topics, drawn from the chapter headings, include:
* Faith
* God
* Creation
* Jesus
* Salvation
* Trinity
* Church
* Heaven
Those familiar with creedal statements will recognise the basic progression here. Chapters are short and accessible without sacrificing information and support. Each chapter concludes with possible discussion question.
One of the interesting omissions in this text is that there seems to be no actual recitation of the Apostles' Creed itself - one might expect this to be in the introduction, or as the beginning of the first topics chapter on faith, or indeed in the appendix. While it is true that many Christians will have this in prayer books and other texts, and indeed many will already know the text from memory, it is a surprising omission that could be easily corrected. There are good glossary, index and biographical appendices at the end of the book.
This is a good book for use in church, Sunday school and bible study situations, particularly for liturgical churches whose congregations will be readily familiar with the Apostles' Creed.

Recognizing only key terms relating to predestination or the five points, many Christians want a better explanation of the concepts and beliefs that make up a Reformed perspective. What is Reformed Theology? is an introduction to a doctrine that has eluded so many evangelical Christians. And who better to teach about Reformed theology than R. C. Sproul? In thoroughly expounding the foundational doctrines and five points, Sproul asserts the reality of God's amazing grace. For anyone wanting to know more about Reformed theology, this candid book offers a coherent and complete introduction to an established belief.

A very clear introduction on Reformed Theology .......2007-03-17
Being a non-Reformed person, I have always wanted a clear explanation of the Reformed viewpoint without a lot of the theological jargon. I found it in this wonderful book by R.C. Sproul. He explains the foundations of Reformed theology and the 5 Points of Reformed Theology.
The chapters in this book are as follows:
Part 1 Foundations of Reformed Theology
1 Centered on God
2 Based on God's Word Alone
3 Committed to Faith Alone
4 Devoted to the Prophet, Priest and King
5 Nicknamed Covenant Theology
Part 2 5 Points of Reformed Theology
6 Humanity's Radical Corruption
7 God's Sovereign Choice
8 Christ's Purposeful Atonement
9 The Spirit's Effective Call
10 God's Preservation of the Saints
R.C. Sproul explains with very clear text and helpful charts all the essentials of Reformed theology -- TULIP, covenant theology, God's Sovereignty, Limited Atonement, etc. This helped me so much to get a good overview and understanding of the essentials of Reformed Theology. Highly recommended!!
Bible Study book.......2007-01-06
Ten women in a PCA church are monthly discussing the contents. Not an easy read but a great one. It is a good review of theology.especially if you come from a reformed tradition but if not it explains a lot of things- especially the differences between Catholic and Protestant views.

Book Description
"We must commit ourselves, heart and mind, soul and will, home and life, personally and unreservedly, to Jesus Christ. We must humble ourselves before Him. We must trust Him as our Savior and submit to Him as our Lord; and then go on to take our place as loyal members of the church and responsible citizens in the community. Such is basic Christianity, and the theme of this book.
With these words, world-renowned scholar and preacher John R. Stott embarks on a compelling course of study that first defends the fundamental claims of Christianity and then defines the proper outworking of these basic beliefs in the daily lives of believers. Here is a sound, sensible guide for those who are seeking an intellectually satisfying presentation of the Christian faith.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent and simple explanation of the basics of the Christian faith........2006-11-12
An excellent and simple explanation of the foundational basics of the Christian faith. A very good tool to share with anyone who wants to explore the essence of Christianity in a non-complicated, easy to understand, but not watered-down form.
Well organized, solid approach.......2006-01-22
Like C.S. Lewis in "Mere Christianity," among others, Stott decided to write a relatively short book, outlining the basic, foundational principles that undergird Christianity. From that perspective, he did a solid job with such an overwhelming task. Though not quite as engaging or thoughtful as Lewis, Stott makes a series of solid points and well-reasoned arguments to support and organize the process of becoming a follower of Christ. I would suggest that his apologetic case is insufficient to convince most adamant skeptics. However, this would be a great place to start for someone who is a genuine seeker or for someone who is interested in becoming a Christian but needs a place to start.
The organization of the book makes good sense, and it is easy to follow his sequence of chapters. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a straightforward book about "basic Christianity."
Basis Christianity...the foundation of a dynamic Christian experience.......2005-10-12
Stott, John R.W. Basic Christianity. Downers Grove: IVP, 1971. 142 pages.
Dr. John R.W. Stott was born in London in 1921. Dr. Stott holds a multitude of educational degrees, including French, theology, and various doctorate and honorary doctorates in theology. He has written over thirty books on various theological and religious topics and eight biblical expositions for the Bible Speaks Today commentary series. He has attended All Souls Place (home church) in London since his childhood. He has currently held the position rector emeritus since 1975. He continues to preach at the church several times throughout the year. Billy Graham has stated that Dr. Stott is "the most respected clergy man in the world today." One of his earlier publishing's, Basic Christianity, was first written in 1958 and has sold over two and a half million copies and has been translated into more than 63 languages.
Dr. Stott shows the reader that there is much hostility towards the `institution' of the church. It is not that this hostility is geared toward Christ Himself, but against the structure or the organization called `the church' and its fallible managers. The younger generation that is growing up, whether organic to the church or implanted from other religions, is seeking less and less the credentials that make Christianity true and valid.
He feels that many are making too much of the mind knowledge of Christianity and identifying less and less with the actions of Christianity. In essence, it seems he is stating that the culture at large is living a static or nominal Christianity where its participants are just identifiers and not spokesmen. The believers of the movement are only passively wearing the title Christian and not living a life of dynamism for Jesus. You see this by what he calls for in the theme-the return to basic Christianity:
"We must commit ourselves, heart and mind, soul and will, home and life, personally and
unreservedly to Jesus Christ. We must humble ourselves before him. We must trust in
him as our Saviour and submit to him as our Lord; and then go on to take our place as loyal members of the church and responsible citizens in the community."
So with this vivid life that humanity is to envelop, Dr. Stott has essentially written a book that is to encapsulate the foundations of what the followers of Christ are to stand firmly upon. His structure is thus centrally based on four movements through his book: (1) Christ's Person: His claims, His character, and His resurrection; (2) Man's Need: The fact and nature of sin and the consequence of sin; (3) Christ's Work: The death of Christ and the salvation of Christ; and lastly, (4) Man's Response: Counting the cost, Reaching a decision, and being a Christian.
Dr. Stott has written the book so that the present culture/generation can learn to hopefully establish themselves in identity with a revolutionary leader, Jesus Christ. If it is the church where this generation sees the hypocrisy, they it is this generation that must respond to the initiative of God by becoming foundational Christians and creating biblical structure within the Church.
"Our purpose," Dr. Stott says, "is to marshal the evidence to prove that Jesus was the Son of God." So in section one, the three pillars of evidence concretely set around the person of Jesus-claims, character, and resurrection.
He unfolds through the study of scripture for the reader that there are four different kinds of claims Jesus makes. (1) Jesus teaches in a very `self-centered' manner, yet insists a deep set humility in others; (2) Jesus teaches in `direct' manner concerning his divinity, such as claiming to be the `I am' which identifies himself as the God of the Old Testament; (3) Jesus teaches in a very `indirect' manner concerning his divinity, which is seen through the actions of His ministry-forgives sins, bestows life, teaches as if authority, and claims to eventually judge the world; and lastly, (4) teaches through his `dramatized' claims, which were his supernatural miracles.
Dr. Stott's second pillar of evidence for Jesus is His character, which he divides into four areas. (1) What Christ thought about Himself, especially His identification of being without sin; (2) What Christ's friends said about Him, such as Peter's reference to Jesus as `a lamb without blemish or spot'; (3) What Christ's enemies conceded about Him, such as Pilate's declaration of Jesus being innocent; and lastly, (4) What the contemporary audience can see of Jesus themselves, which in essence consists of the readers validation of the first three items.
The last pillar of evidence for Jesus is His resurrection. Again, Dr. Stott uses a cubed structure to show the strong evidence that Jesus had indeed raised from the dead on that Easter morning. (1) The body was gone from the tomb; (2) The grave clothes were undisturbed; (3) Jesus was actually seen after the resurrection by multitudes of witnesses; and lastly, (4) The disciples were changed-from dark grief to joyous belief.
The second movement of his book speaks about the needs of man. Dr. Stott states that, "we must understand who we are as well as who he was." He emphasizes that Jesus just did not come to the earth in a passive manner, but for a specific purpose...to become `the Saviour of sinners.'
The fact is that all humanity is born into the grasps of sin. There is nothing naturally good to mankind because the reaches of sin are universal. Thus man being destitute to perfection, we need someone to bring us out of this eternal death grip of condemnation and alienation from God.
As Dr. Stott had shown the reader the foundation of Christ's identity; he then moved into showing where all men are as they are born into this world. Man has an immense flaw because of the decisions of human choice. And so understanding that fallible man can not possibly create an infallible solution, Dr. Stott moves into the third movement of his book by showing Jesus' action on the Cross by death and the salvation that is imparted to humanity. As Dr. Stott wrote it so eloquently, "Christianity is a rescue religion. It declares that God has taken the initiative in Jesus Christ to deliver us from our sins. This is the main theme of the Bible."
The last section of the book deals specifically with man's response. As mankind understands who they are, sinful creatures, and then they acknowledge the divinity within Jesus, man must make a response to Jesus' death and plan of salvation. Man can only make two decisions to Jesus: reject or accept. There is no neutrality when it comes to religion. Dr. Stott leads the reader through, if it might by systematized, the process of how to come into the realm of Christianity and what it takes to daily live out the Christian existence.
Dr. Stott completes his book by speaking about the Christian's duty to the world. If this generation is rejecting the hypocrites of the institutions, namely the church and the `people', then it is this generation's responsibility to become biblical Christians and rebuild its foundations upon Basic Christianity.
The reviewer believes that Dr. Stott has accomplished his stated objective of calling mankind into action. He clearly stated that the foundations of Christianity were not mere understandings of factual information concerning Jesus, but must be held deeply within what the individual does with the information. He shows the reader that we must do-commit ourselves, humble ourselves, trust and submit to Him, and rightly/loyally take our places among the community of the body.
The reviewer believes that Dr. Stott has lain out a very strong apologetic for dynamic Christianity. This book could most definitely be read by the pagan and quicken them to new life. This book could most definitely be read by the Christian and be quickened to renew their spiritual walk with new power. And most assuredly, what he writes could also hit the disease of nominal Christianity dead in the face. Those that only passively bare the name of Christ could be called into repentance by Dr. Stott's demands of committed Christians. As God Himself is the initiator of all in our reality, so we must be the responders to God's call...either accept or reject.
The reviewer has not read any other books by Dr. Stott in their entirety, but after reading this thoroughly logical and fundamental view of Jesus, there will be many more books digested in the view near future. Dr. Stott is very thought provoking and makes an immense contemporary connection (even though he has been writing for over fifty-one years).
Clear, easy to read, and just right for anyone seeking the truth about Christianity.......2005-09-16
This great little book provides a wonderful introduction to Christian doctrine. Stott's writing is fluid, clear and accessible. It's not dumbed down, and it's not too academic. Stott has avoided the pitfall of sounding "too British" for some American readers. It's just right for the average person, in my view, but it demands a reader who is willing to think. Unlike some theological writing, Stott's is by no means dry. His wording is colorful and accurate, and he has a way of creating word-pictures that should appeal to men and women, young and old.
If I were to teach a class for "newbies" at church, or to lead a discussion group on the basics, this is the book I'd choose.
Clarity from a leading Evangelical mind.......2005-05-14
John Stott's discussion is clear, concise and filled with thoughtful consideration of what Christian belief can mean in today's world. He does not avoid difficult questions and his answers are theologically sound and offer great clarity for the interested reader. Whether a devout believer or someone new to the faith, this book offers a resonant and thorough discussion of the relevance and meaning of Christianity--from one of the leading minds in Evangelical thought.

excellent study tool for any christian.......2007-09-28
I am using the book for a class so we are working through it at a gradual pace, but I love how Ryrie expresses things very clearly in each and every part of the chapter.
Essential to any theological library.......2007-07-08
Dr. Ryrie is clear and concise in his explanation of theology and doctrine. I have used this book many times in conjunction with my classes at Philadelphia Biblical University and have always found it to be understandable and to the point. Dr. Ryrie has an amazing grasp of Scripture and brings it to bear in his Basic Theology. No library is complete without it.
A Good Theological Book To Start With.......2006-11-19
Maybe I am just biased because I have 3 Ryrie Study Bibles and he lectured at the Bible college I attended but I do believe Dr. Charles Ryrie did a very good job on this book.
This book is easy to read, easy to understand, concise, and covers a wide selection of topics as well as it touches every point of Systematic Theology.
For the beginner theologian, I would say Charles Ryrie does a great job explaining some of the different and sometimes difficult aspects of Christian Theology others may be questioning. It doesn't go extremely indepth but enough for you to help others understand their questions.
If you are looking for a more indepth explanation of theology do what other reviewers have suggested and that is to purchase the 4 volume set of Dr. Geisler's Systematic Theology.
If you have had no training in Systematic Theology this book would be a good start for you.
If you want to read a theology book that is easy to read, not boring, not too difficult, and gets to the point, then this book is the one for you to start with.
This book is a great tool to own, to use for your more indepth Bible Studies, and you won't be disappointed. And I recommend it for those who are beginner theologians.
Excellent Resource.......2006-11-12
I purchased this book while at Bob Jones University. It covers a wide selection of topics that are used all the time. I have continualy come to this for explaining different aspects of Christian Theology to others. This book covers topics such as: The Bible being the Word of God, Angels, Satan, Demons, Sin, Jesus, Salvation, The Holy Spirit and much more. It goes into depth on many interesting subjects that both believer and non-believers have alike such as "problematic passages".
This book is a library itself, containing many references of scripture to back it's content up. This is a great tool to own.

a great way to look at theology.......2006-11-10
Ryrie did a very good job on this book. It hits all the main points of Systematic Theology. It doesnt go extremely indept though, but since I have had no training in Systematic Theology it has been a good start for me.

Book Description
When
The Universe Next Door was first introduced nearly thirty years ago, it set the standard for a clear, readable introduction to worldviews. In concise, easily understood prose, James W. Sire explained the basics of theism, deism, naturalism, nihilism, existentialism, Eastern monism and the new consciousness. The second edition was updated and expanded to include sections on Marxism and secular humanism, as well as a completely reworked chapter on what is now widely known as New Age philosophy rather than new consciousness. And the third edition offered further updating and revisions, including a thoroughly revised chapter on New Age philosophy and, perhaps most importantly, a new chapter on postmodernism. Now the fourth edition refines the definition of worldview itself, incorporating Sire's thinking and teaching during the past decade. (His recent work is showcased in a new book, Naming the Elephant, also published by IVP.)
The Universe Next Door has been translated into several languages and has been used as a text at over one hundred colleges and universities in courses ranging from apologetics and world religions to history and English literature. With the publication of the fourth edition, this book will continue to aid students, teachers and anyone who wants to understand the variety of worldviews that compete with Christianity for the allegiance of our minds and hearts.

Great summary of several world views logically presented.......2007-09-15
Great book. World views are presented by answering several common questions so the comparison is easy. Highly recommend.
Great content... a little hard to read........2007-08-31
James Sire's book "The Universe Next Door" is absolutely essential to understanding people's ways of looking at the world. Keep in mind that this book only deals with Western thought, so it's not completely exhaustive. Sire outlines the points of each chapter very well, but sometimes the thoughts themselves are hard to comprehend at first read. If you want to get everything out of this book, you're going to have to devote your complete attention to it. Highly recommeneded.
I refer to it CONSTANTLY ........2007-08-21
Well, organized, brief, fairly well balanced, I've read this book twice cover to cover and referred to it a hundred times by page and a thousand times in conversation.
It's one of the most referenced books in my library.
Practical use: that's the best recommendation I can think of.
Some say it's too Christian oriented; while, others say it's not enough. Every writer comes with bias, and the author clearly states his own, while making a conscious effort of avoiding inserting his own bias. What more could you ask?
My only complaint is that it treats each world view too briefly, but again, to make each section longer would just make the BOOK longer, and therefore reduce readability.
Everytime I think of a criticsm of this book, I can't think of any beter way to do it.
I Expected Better.......2007-03-05
As part of my Worldviews class at Regent University, I had to read this book. I had great expectations about this text, but found myself sorely disappointed. NotATameLion said it well. Sire's complete and obvious biased against all worldviews but the Christian results in him making multiple snide and arrogant comments about anyone who isn't Christian and non-Christian worldviews. It would be far better if he could have kept his biased to a minimum and examined all the other worldviews fairly and equally. His regular sniping at other worldviews weakens his position that Christianity is best and made me wonder why he had to resort to nasty remarks if his position was true. It also gives the text an immature feel that further weakens his conclusions.
Reading beyond the author's bad attitudes and comments, the discussions on the different "worldviews" is often confusing and had to follow. Several worldviews are not really worldviews at all, but a combination of a ton of different worldviews lumped together. Sire's seeming lack of respect for other opinions probably accounts for his lumping various worldviews together so that none are accurately portrayed.
I really can't recommend this text to anyone and in my evaluation for this course, I shared my disappointment with this text.
Entirely useless literature.......2007-02-22
I had to buy this book for a philosophy class. I hate it. Trying to learn about a worldview through a third party (Sire) is, at best, fustrating. Sire often sermonizes and is incessently adding his own opinions about whatever. Its really aggravating that it is assumed that the reader can't come up with his/her own opinion on the subject matter.

A great text for students, pastors and other practising counselors. It contains goals every counselor should strive to achieve. Clinebell also describes the positive characteristics a counselor should portray . The methods and types of counseling are also spelt out in this book. This book is an invaluable guide for me, one which can be adapted to some of the situations in my country.

Remarkable Edition.......2006-11-30
This volume, published by HarperCollins in the sixties and edited by translator David Farrell Krell serves as the perfect compendium to the thought of Martin Heidegger, one of the most significant thinkers of philosophy in the 20th century. Heidegger's methodology is necessarily difficult, as he is trying to remove himself from the `average-everyday' language we employ; and he is trying to approach the meaning of being concretely and originally. Therefore, stop complaining about the obscurity of his style and work your way through this text, for it will remain one of the major works of European thought.
The first essay is the introductory chapter to Heidegger's opus Being and Time. It is actually rather senseless to read it without going on to read the complete text. However, for those readers who simply want a taste of Heidegger's basic philosophic project and methodology, it is summarized here. He says at the outset: "This question has today been forgotten-although our time considers itself progressive in again affirming `metaphysics.' All the same we believe that we are spared the exertion of rekindling a gigantomachia peri tes ousias [a Battle of Giants concerning Being,' [Plato, Sophist]. But the question touched upon here is hardly an arbitrary one." (41). For Heidegger, philosophy has lost touched with the question `what is the meaning of being, as such?' However, in order to resolve the question of the meaning of Being, you must examine the Being of the questioner, (Dasein), leading us to do fundamental ontology.
The second essay in the collection is titled What is Metaphysics? It is an inaugural address the delimited many of the major ideas he would later expand in Being in Time. In it, Heidegger again examines the meaning of Being, but he also discusses the unheimlichkeit (the uncanny), and Dasein's confrontation with "the nothing" (100), and with attunement and Nihilism generally. This is a particularly famous, though cryptic essay, the major ideas in it are expanded at great lengths by Heidegger in his book `Introduction to Metaphysics,' published later in 1953.
The next essay is titled On the Essence of Truth, and it is particularly difficult. Heidegger begins with: "Our Topic is the essence of truth. The question regarding the essence of truth is not concerned with whether truth is a truth of practical experience or of economic calculation, the truth of a technical consideration or of political sagacity, or, in particular, a truth of scientific research or of artistic composition, or even the truth of thoughtful reflection or cultic belief. The question of essence disregards all this and attends to the one thing that in general distinguishes every `truth' as truth (115). Heidegger will later suggest in the essay that the essence of truth is freedom, or unconcealment. Heidegger does not adhere to radical skepticism, nor does he believe in eternal truths. He is interested in the essence of this question with regard to Da-Sein's `liberation' for `ek-sistence.'
The Origin of the Work of Art is unlike any essay in the history of aesthetic philosophy or criticism, because Heidegger is not at all concerned with the beauty of art, nor with the thinking of the artist. He is interested in the capacity for art to reveal worlds. He writes: "The temple-work, standing there, opens up a world and at the same time sets this world back again on earth, which itself only thus emerges as native ground. But men and animals, plants and things, are never present and familiar as unchangeable objects, only to represent incidentally also a fitting environment for the temple, which one fine day is added to what is already there" (168). Heidegger values the art of poetry more than any other. He says, "Art happens as poetry. Poetry is founding in the triple sense of bestowing, grounding, and beginning" (202), and he valued Holderlin, Trakyl, and Rilke above all other poets. Art is an origin, and it serves to preserve the historical existence of man.
One could go on and on. This volume also contains the Letter on Humanism, Modern Science, Metaphysics, and Mathematics, the Question Concerning Technology, Building, Dwelling, Thinking, What Calls for Thinking?, the Way to Language, and the End of Philosophy and the Task of Thinking. They will keep you busy for quite a while.
HEIDEGGER REVIEW BY TONY SEE.......2006-04-12
This is a good place to start if you are interested in getting an overview of Heidegger's writings. There are some obvious disadvantages such as the fact that some parts are included while others are not, but what is inside is generally good enough as a starting point for Heidegger's other writings.
I would recommend reading the other translations though such as the Pathways, Parmenides and Language and Thought if one is already serious about Heidegger studies as these have the important writings as well and in complete form.
There are some Heideggerian writings that are especially relevant to life in Singapore and perhaps to other urban and technological cities as well and the student of philosophy may want to see how everything fits together in the works on art and technology.

Exploring Heidegger.......2006-03-08
The best introduction to Heidegger's thought is a close reading of Being and Time itself. As many of the reviewers point out, the essays in this volume are a good collection of several of Heidegger's key essays, representing his intellectual development throughout his long life. They mark the many transitions and shifts in emphasis and thought. After writing Being and Time, Heidegger spent the rest of his life explicating and developing the many treasures one finds in the pages of that magnificent work - he went both into it, expanding ideas that were only hinted at in it, and far beyond it. For those who will not be reading Being and Time in its entirety, by having the introduction to Being and Time, this volume provides the next, though distant, best thing; for it is in these few pages that Heidegger first announces how radical and revolutionary a rupture his thought is from the history of philosophy.
Just a word about the review titled 'Are you *sure* you want to do this to yourself?'. Firstly, I am not sure whether this person has actually read Heidegger in the German, but he is absolutely wrong that Heidegger is not different or no less difficult in German than he is in English - what Heidegger is doing is far more apparent in the original German. This reviewer's comments are typical Anglo-American or 'analytic' propaganda. Such comments arise out of an inability to deal with Heidegger's complex thought and an unwillingness to undergo the profound discomfort that such a thinking entails. I have indeed read the philosophers he names and, with the exception of Wittgenstein, the others, though quite important in 20th century thought, don't hold a candle to Heidegger, as Wittgenstein himself, who had thought Heidegger an incomparable philosopher, would have readily admitted. His comments are based on a long tradition, arising in the 20th century, that claimed that 'clarity' is something that is not only possible in philosophy, and language for that matter, but also desirable. Philosophy makes uncomfortable. It is meant to do so. It is the opening of new worlds and whoever has traveled can attest to the discomfort that arises from such displacement, such being out of ones home or place of dwelling. New worlds are created through language and to be forced outside `our' everyday language is to be violated. Deleuze and Lacan, both of whom he also mentions, were also incomparable philosophers who are quite difficult and who built the most profound of worlds through discomforting languages. Such journeys require a willingness to be uprooted, something which this reviewer, for whom the failure lies within these thinkers and not within himself, cannot even begin to understand.
Reading Heidegger in the XXI century.......2005-07-28
This an excelent translation of several works by Martin Heidegger. It is a good edition.
Very illuminating read, but KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GETTING INTO.......2005-05-11
While having one of the most abstract writing styles, Heidegger's intellectual bravura is worth reading. As a student of philosophy it was one of the most eye-opening - if not life changing - statements on how to live in a technological world that is increasingly separating man from nature.
This is a good introduction to Heidegger as it contains much of his important writings. In particular, I recommend Being and Time, the Letter on Humanism, and the Question Concerning Technology (the last of which is worth the book itself in my opinion).
Heidegger is very much a philologist, a lover of words. He uses this strength to construct a philosophy revolved around the 'original' (i.e. Greek) meaning of words (which the Romans mistranslated into Latin) in order to show how we, or the individual, can come to terms with their "Being." This is why it takes time to get through what he is saying. Much of his philosophy is his own re-reading of the history of philosophy, which he contends since Plato to Nietzche has taken us away from the meaning of "Being." Admittedly, it was helpful to be taking a course on Existentialism at the time of reading this book for my instructor made it easier to discern what the argument was and what the meaning of the words like "ex-sist" (standing out), "a-letheia" (truth as uncoveredness), "Gestell" (enframing), "putting forth" and "setting upon".
While at first I didn't want to read Heidegger because of his personal, moral failings, I found that this 'philosopher of being' was worth studying. But one should keep this caveat in mind.
In all, I recommend this collection as a good introduction to Heidegger's thought. Just be patient, re-read portions again and again, and you'll be fine.

Book Description
Does the Bible speak to the real problems of real people in the real world? Does it offer viable solutions to those problems? You can weigh the evidence and decide for yourself with these 25 Bible studies, which show what the Bible actually teaches regarding our most fundamental questions about God.
Compiled and written by one of modern Christianity's greatest thinkers, this book highlights Scripture passages on the central doctrines of Christianity--such as creation, man's sin and God's grace, the person and work of Christ, future events--and briefly explains how each passage supports the biblical teaching on that particular theme. It's all right here. Laid out simply. So you can see for yourself what the Bible says--in God's own words.
This volume also contains
Two Contents, Two Realities, Schaeffer's essay on the four things Christians need to make an impact in the current age. Together these two works serve to show the coherence and credibility of the Scriptures and their relevance to the critical issues in your life.

25 Basic Bible Studies.......2007-09-13
This book is exactly what it says--25 basic Bible studies. It's all Scripture with brief comments by Dr. Schaeffer. I strongly recommend it for new Christians as well as for older Christians who may need some "brushing up" on the basic tenets of our faith.
A straight-forward study of scripture.......2001-10-26
This book is an excellent Bible study tool. It is perfect for beginnng Bible study students, but I would also recommend it as a guide for small group or home Bible studies.. Francis Schaeffer was a very spiritual (but not religious!) man with a great amount of integrity. I also recommend his commentary on Romans 1-8. If you feel that religion has let you down and want to know what the God of the Bible has to say about it, read this book, including Two Contents, Two Realities at the end. An excellent way to equip yourself in a world filled with contradictions.

A very insightful book by a modern day prophet. This is an excellent choice for Christians that want to re-evaluate and re-affirm their beliefs and a superb tool to use while witnessing to others about Christ.

Book Description
Many modern Christians are now agreeing that we should take Jesus' command to cast out demons more seriously than we have in recent years. But how do we do it? Where do we start? This practical, down-to-earth book shows us how. From Doris Wagner, one of the leading authorities on biblical deliverance in North America, this manual teaches Christians how to take authority over demonic spirits; how to bring inner healing and break soul ties; how to break the bondage of rejection, addiction, lust and more; and how to set free those whom the enemy has held captive.
Customer Reviews:
Doris Wagner is very detailed.......2007-09-24
No book that I've read has been as detailed in deliverance ministry than this book. She is about making a thorough deliverance so that the person does not lapse back into their old lifestyle and unwittingly invite the demons back in again. I highly recommend this book.
How to cast out demons.......2007-08-23
It's written in a manner that is understandable, without a lot of words
that only veterans would understand.
Good practical teaching.......2005-12-23
This book is a great overview on deliverance and how to minister it. Has specific prayers in the back to renounce your ancestor's involvement with freemasonry.
I recommend this to everyone!.......2005-11-28
This book should be considered a Classic for those interested in deliverance ministry. It teaches much and includes prayers at the back for freeing oneself from generational curses due to FreeMasonry connections. One gains a good understanding of our authority in Christ Jesus and the tactics and subtleties of Satan.
The owner of the first review (Bertoni) would be wise to READ the book. Satan won that battle by scaring him into NOT reading it. By his laughing at the book, the demon caused him to believe that it was of no value. It decieved him!
If you don't know who you are in Christ, you have NO authority....and demons know who does and who does not have that authority.
Great warfare tool........2003-01-31
This is a great book to begin working with people in the area of deliverance. It doesn't get too indepth while not sacrificing the basics you need. Also contains sample questionaires, etc.
