Great Book.......2007-10-10
The stories were great. I loved Beverly Jenkins story. I ALWAYS love Beverly Jenkins story. It was a great romance. The woman knows her stuff. Gwnyeth Bolton's story was my first read from her and all I have to say is 'HOLLA. BACK.' Hot, hot, hot. I was fanning myself through her love scenes. It was funny and erotic as hell. I definitely will have to read more of her books. The second story "Guns & Roses" was good as well. Good read.
Cuff Me Please!!!!!.......2007-08-06
Like other reviewers here I LOVE BEVERLY JENKINS! Hands down the Bevery Jenkins story was my favorite (I've read it atleast five times) Jordan Yancy could be any woman's dream lover and ideal husband material despite being locked away for something he didn't do. Too bad this wasn't a full length novel. I enjoyed the other two stories as well. I really enjoyed reading this anthology and hope to see more anthologies from these authors.
3 stories + 3 authors = Good reading.......2007-08-04
All three of these stories were good however I would rate story #1 & #3 the best and number #2 was okay. Still it was worth the money!
Excellent Read!!!.......2007-07-18
Cuffed by Candelight was a wonderful read. I was captured from the first page. Beverly Jenkins is a great storyteller and made me feel as if I was standing right there with the characters. All 3 short stories were very enjoyable and sometimes comical read. I recommend all Beverly Jenkins fan read this book.
Great Read!!!.......2007-07-04
Like many of the other reviewers, Beverly Jenkins is one of my favorite authors and she did not let her readers down with the great read.
The other stories were good as well and I would recommend this book to anyone looking for something hot...hot...hot.

An Amazing Book.......2007-06-03
Carnival at Candlelight is an awesome book. It takes place in Venice, Italy, 260 years ago on the night of the annual Carnival celebration. It starts out when Jack and Annie recieve a note from Merlin that says they have to save the Grand Lady of the Lagoon from a terrible disaster!
When Jack and Annie get to Venice, they travel to the Carnival in a gondola. Then they walk around and get into trouble from guards and go up flights of stairs, look at maps, and see statues, all the while thinking about their crazy mission. It isn't making any sense!
They go out into Saint Mark's Square and look in their research book for help. The note from Merlin says to find a tower with two men and a bell, climb it, and get on a king of a jungle. Wandering in the crowd, they spot the tower and race up it. Then they spot the lion and use one of their magic rhymes to make the lion come to life. Then they go out over the sea to spot Neptune, the god of the sea.
They learn that the Grand Lady of the Lagoon is Venice, Italy, and they have to save it from a flood. They spot Neptune and tell him to stop the flood. He does and their mission is over.
I am just a kid, but I recomend this book for any fans od the Magic Tree House series. I got this book for Easter of 2005 and read it that day and enjoyed it.
Magic Tree House #33: Carnival at Candlelight is the book for young readers.
I think the author, Mary Pope Osborne, states things clearly in her books and the pictures explain them better. Mary Pope Osborne, in my opinion, is the best author in the world.
A Great Review From a Spiritridge Third Grader.......2007-03-21
Want to hear a book that's really cool? Well, the book Magic Tree House Carnival at the Candle Light will do the trick! This book is amazing. It's about two Aencheris kids Jack and Annie who goes to Venice to save a mysterious person the Grand Lady of the lagoon. But, once they found out about that person it wasn't what they had expected! Jack and Annie figured that this job was getting harder and harder.
Jack and Annie have some wild stuff happening in this wacky book. That's why I'm telling you to read this book! What I most really like about this book is when Jack and Annie said a spell and got to ride on a Golden, shinning, flying, lion. That part was Awesome!
I would recommend this book to someone who loves and who totally enjoys mysteries, because this book has spells, a mystery, and Magic stuff. Well, that's all. I hope you will adore this book.
Mary Pope Osborne creates magic... from a Book Loons reviewer..........2006-07-31
Mission: to save the Grand Lady of the Lagoon. Place: Venice Italy. When: 260 years back in time on the night of 'Carnival'.
Jack and Annie of Frog Creek are off again on a new mission in the Merlin Series #33. Odds of surviving a dungeon: Fair to Good... i.e., if the 'book of magic' has something to help them, and Merlin's apprentices Kathleen and Teddy, too.
Mary Pope Osborne never fails to create magic in her stories, with backgrounds of historical places, and supporting the suspense that follows Annie and Jack as they follow the instructions in a letter from Merlin -- "...When waters rise beneath the moon,/Visit the Grand Lady of the Lagoon." The heroes meet grouchy guards, a son of a famous painter, climb the Giants' Stairs, fly the sky on a Golden Lion, and meet Neptune.
Osborne visited Venice and of the city she writes: "...no photographs can truly do Venice justice. No notes or diagrams can truly capture her. Venice lives best in memory, stirring the deep waters of the imagination."
Other Recommendation: Night of the New Magicians by Mary Pope Osborne
A adventures book.......2006-07-18
Carnival at Candlelight is a funfilled book. It all starts when Jack and Annie of FrogCreek has the same dreams. (Which was sent by Teddy and kethleen). They decide to go to the TreeHouse
and finds teddy and kethleen fast asleep. 'Then later they wake up and they said that they will not be going with them on their adventure.' 'Oh No!' Said Annie 'But what if we need your magic?' Teddy Said 'Morgon thinks that you are ready to use magic your own.''Really?' said Jack 'Yep'. Said Teddy 'But we don't know any magic.' said Annie 'Remember what I said if we work together we can do anything.' said Teddy 'Anything is possible but you just said you were'nt coming with us'. said Annie 'Thats true thats why we give you this Wow a 10 magic rhymes book!' said Jack 'Yes,they are ment to last for your four journeys.' said teddy 'Each line is in Teddy's language, and one in mine the language of the seal people.' said kethleen. my opinion is that this is a fantastic adventures book.
Carnival at Candlelight.......2005-09-11
"Carnival at Candlelight" by Mary Pope Osborne was a delight to read. I generally don't like the fantasy genre but I absolutely love the "Magic Tree House" series. One of the things that I love about this series of books is the author's ability to blend factual knowledge with adventure and excitement. As a teacher I appreciate this ability because I believe that students will learn a lot of facts from these books plus they will be enjoying a grand adventure too.
"Carnival at Candlelight" is the fifth book in a group of Magic Tree House books called the "Merlin Missions." Jack and Annie (the main characters) have a fantasy adventure in real places in real times. In this book they travel to the city of Venice, Italy. There they discover the mystery and magic of Venice.
This book is filled with factual informations such as, "Instead of roads, Venice has waterways called canals. People glide along the canals in shallow boats called gondolas."
Not only is this book filled with adventure and factual knowledge but it also has great illustrations. The illustrations in this book make the story come alive. The illustrations really give you an idea of how Jack and Annie feel during key moments in the story.
This is a great book for second graders as a read-aloud. Third graders could read it by themselves.

You MUST read these stories!.......2007-04-28
I read these a couple months ago and am still overwhelmed by these stories. I rarely like short stories, usually can't sustain interest to read a whole book of them - but these got me. Immediately. Daniel Alarcon is a brilliant, talented writer - everything THEY say about him is true. Each character in each short story is so vivid and real, so immediately compelling. Each short story tells a lifetime of a person and a chunk of history - in this case, of Peru, or Peruvian immigrants. THe stories and situations are complex and Alarcon refrains from making political judgments or pontifications. This is some of the most interesting stuff I've read in years, it's beautifully written, it's compelling and breathtaking. And having just read his recently published novel, Lost City Radio, I have to say - I like the short stories better. These are incredible. Don't miss 'em.
Read this book.......2007-03-30
The postman delivered this book at noon. I picked it up, missed class, and was finished by five. 200 pages. You need to read this book. I can't say anything more. Read this book.
War by Candlelight: Stories (P.S.)
Great book!.......2007-01-03
It's a nice surprise to find a writer so fluent in Spanish and English, the remarks in Spanish just add more value to a superb book. All stories could really happen everywhere around the World. I can't wait to buy his first novel.
A gripping collection of short stories.......2006-12-07
"In Lima," writes Daniel Alarcón, "dying is the local sport." The same is true of the Peruvian countryside, where one of the author's characters loses his wife in a fantastic mudslide that inundates his entire village.
Alarcón's Peru is a hard place to make a life. Nearly all of the short stories in this collection catalog the war torn country's violence, its corruption and its lack of opportunity for able-bodied citizens. At the same time, there is a gentle nature about many of the author's protagonists, most of who are simply trying to make the best of a bad situation.
The majority of these stories take place in Lima, a city that contains a large penitentiary for terrorists and street thugs. The local kids refer to the facility as the University "because it's where you went when you finished high school." In Alarcón's first story, Flood, every moment - every breath it seems - is dominated by the neighborhood turf war, the threat of incarceration and worst of all, death at the hand of a rival gang.
For the author's story, Absence, the scene shifts to post 9/11 New York City, where Wari, a painter, is having a showing of his work. Before leaving Peru, the painter is warned by a friend to shave, lest security officials mistake him for an Arab. The reader follows his experience at the American Embassy in Lima Even there, his situation is made more difficult. Hoping to obtain a ninety-day stay, Wari finds he can only get a one-month tourist visa. After a meeting with an abrasive embassy agent, he is limited to two weeks out-of-country.
Daniel Alarcón writes with such an authentic voice that it's hard to imagine the lives of the people of Peru being any different that what he describes. All of the stories here bring a new tragedy - the loss of a loved one, or the story of a laid off bank employee, Miguel, who has been pleading with his girlfriend, the mother of their child, for her hand in marriage for five years. The woman loves Miguel but tells him but that she is not sure that that is enough. Miguel muses that "in this city, there is nothing more useless than imagining a life... There is no work," he complains.
Born in Lima and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Alarcón has written a beautiful, if sobering, collection of short stories. Strongly recommended for adult readers.
An intriguing debut.......2005-11-22
Jumping between the US and Peru, Daniel Alarcon's stories depict the harsh realities of life from an outside in perspective. My favorite stories in this collection are "City of Clowns" and "Third Ave Suicide."
Those who enjoy the writings of other 1st generation immigrants raised in the US such as Jhumpa Lahiri will enjoy the perspective that Daniel Alarcon brings.

Captures your attention.......2005-12-29
I used to be a big-time reader of Nancy Drew. Now, I occasionally go back and reread or read new Nancy Drew books. When I read this one, it was the first time I had ever read it. It captures your attention, and you won't be able to put it down or stop turning pages. The endings of the chapters are suspenseful, and you'll want to read the next chapter to see what happens. Although it sometimes seemed like there was way too much going on at the same time, making just a little hard to read and understand, I found the characters to be realistic, although I had a few questions after finishing. I won't say because it will give everything away.
One of Nancy's best friends, Bess Marvin, has just acquired Casey, a young golden retriever that she is training to be a guide dog. She got her at Candlelight Inn, an old, slightly spooky inn that was donated to the Guiding Eyes by Emmaline Whitby, a blind woman. Her granddaughter, Marisa, is currently Devon Marshall, Bess's neighbor's, girlfriend. Even though Marisa is blind and uses a guide dog, she is still friendly and finds ways to get around using Misty, Marisa's golden retriever guide dog. But there's also mystery around their hometown of River Heights.
Counterfeit money is being passed around Nancy, Bess, and George's town of River Heights, and the three best friends are shocked to find out that Eric Pavlik, one of Marisa's friends, was caught passing a counterfeit bill, which mysteriously is dated to twenty-five years ago---back when there was another counterfeiting ring. Standing up for Eric along with her friends, Bess is almost arrested when she hands in a dollar bill, as Casey ate one, and the bill turns out to be counterfeit. Even worse, the bill is Marisa's. Marisa and Nancy have been receiving multiple threats to stop, too. But Nancy won't give up a case!
Suspenseful and fun.

This book was a real mystery with a great result........1998-11-29
This book had a very eerie suspence that was kept through out the whole book. The conclusion was quite a surprise. It had a very laid back atmosphere that was comforting and interesting at the same time. The book gave you a lot of clues and it was realy exciting to discover the conclusion. It was a real mystery that kept the readers interest through the whole thing.

CLASSIC.......2004-06-29
ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS BY DIANA PALMER. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT IF YOU CAN FIND IT.
Classic Diana Palmer..........2002-11-16
A loving Arrangement is one of the best "short" novels written by Diana Blayne aka Susan Kyle/Diana Palmer. I have the original copy and this is the type of writing I would love to see Diana get back to. The heroine is feisty and sensual and the hero is sexy and does not come off as some jerk who verbally/emotionally assaults his women as in her other books. This book is written under the Candelight Ectasy line and is hard to find. If you are lucky to get a copy, buy it because you will not be disappointed.
A Loving Arrangement.......1999-12-24
The back cover reads:
"There was no use pretending. His eagle eye had penetrated her disguise. Abby pulled the pins. Her platinum hair cascaded down her shoulders. She no longer blended with the woodwork--the perfect executive secretary to the irascible trial lawyer Greyson McCullum. But she was still a fugitive from the man who had betrayed her...the man who would arrive in Atlanta within hours. Her only alternative was to flee again or accept McCullum's outrageous offer. She would pose as his live-in lover! He had offered his protection...and forced her to see him in a dangerous new light. Was she merely exchanging one risky masquerade for another?"

beautiful and poetic.......2007-08-16
This book is just so amazingly wonderful, while being simplistic at the same time, which is quite hard to come by these days. Renee describes the beauty of candles (how they 'illuminate' your life) and gives many different candle-lighting rituals (from basic to more complex) without any religious denomination, which means that a Christian or a Wiccan could use this book and just change some of the wording to suit their own needs. What I also liked about this book was that Renee gives correspondences for candle colors, oils and scents which are lacking in many books today. This book was what caused me to be a fan of Renee's writing and I'm sure you will feel the same way.
Simply Wonderful.......2006-02-24
It took me a while to finally get this book. I looked it over many times at a local book store. I also recieve Llewellyn's newsletter and it had one of the rituals for Samhain in it. I thought it was beautifully written and wanted to see more. When I looked through the book some more, I found a ritual for the death of a pet and even one for Veteran's Day. It has many rituals and they are easy to use. You can even alter them for your own use as well. This is simply a wonderful book and I do not think you will regret it.
simply awesome!.......2004-05-31
I picked up this book at the library hoping that it would indeed offer everything that it said it did. My spiritual studies have taken an extremely ecclectic turn, merging quite a bit of paganism, egyptian, taoism and buddhism with new age, metaphysical and sometimes christian belief systems. I was looking to incorporate some kind of daily spiritual practice through candle rites into my life, and this book has given it to me - I'm about to purchase my own copy now I know how awesome it is! It is simplistic without being pointless, it offers non-denominational rites I'm sure just about ANYONE can use in their studies, and I think it offers a great deal of spiritual wealth to the world. Thank you for writing this book Ms. Renee!

interesting, but dating hurts it.......2004-10-24
Bargain with the Devil by Jayne Castle (early Jayne Ann Krentz) shows a lot of sparkle and wit, and the delightful writing of Krentz, but boy this one dates! It's so surprising to see just what as considered as "romance" in 1981. What was acceptable. The male comes off not just as Alpha - which I truly love - but overbearing, which hurts this effort. If they plan on re-releasing this one, I hope they update it to where readers of today can enjoy this. The premise is a little contrived, but a bit of judicious editing could turn it around.
Hunter Manning was zeroing in on Stacey Ryland's beautiful "blonde" sister-in-law. Her brother's marriage was new, and he was under pressure taking over the family business, so it left his new wife wide-open for Hunter to target. He has come to Arizona, to extract revenge for his father's death. Stacey's powerful and greedy father forced out Manning's father in a leveraged buyout, and within a year Manning's father was dead. Manning blamed Ryland. Now fourteen years later, the time has come to extract vengeance. He has decided to seduce Stacey's sister-in-law, so distract her brother from business, thus can bring the Ryland empire down.
Only, Hunter did not count on Stacey. She derails Hunter's plan by offering herself as payment for his vengeance. She convinces him, why bother with the sister-in-law when you can go after the daughter. Her offer is to pretend they are having an affair, but Hunter makes a counter offer of marriage. He wants a "Ryland woman he can make into a Manning woman". What she does not tell him is there is no love loss between Stacey and her father, and Hunter marrying her will not hurt her father as Hunter imagines.
Within days, Stacey finds herself married and on her wedding night, her father calls and tells Hunter he knows Hunter married Stacey for vengeance, but it won't work, because there is little affection between father and daughter. Hunter is not pleased and now the marriage is off to rough start.
The premise seems a bit forced. It's hard for the reader to believe Stacey would marry a man who was nearly a total stranger, and make no effort to get to know him before the marriage, just to keep Hunter from going after her brother. If you can get past that and ignore the "make a Ryland witch into a Manning witch", "...or I'll give you the beating you deserve" or "my woman" tossed in repetitively from the nearly Tarzan chest thumping hero, it's a good read; just know going in you have to put up with these problems.
Cute early Jayne Castle(Krentz) work from October 1981.......2002-12-02
Hunter Manning has been plotting a revenge on Paul Rylan for destroying his father 14 years ago by a takeover of his father's business. He begins his revenge by trying to seduce Paul's son Eric's new wife in hopes to ruin the marriage. Stacy Rylan, Paul's daughter, offers herself in an immediate marriage to stop the threat. What could be better than turning a Rylan into a loyal Manning! As silly as the plot sounds, it actually works, and the sexist story is fun to read.
excellent older krentz title! short and sweet!.......2000-01-29
I collect the older as well as the newer jayne ann krentz books and this one is right up there with some of her classics like "Second Wife" and "Corporate Wife". The premise that the heroine gets involved with the hero to become his vengence target to protect her brother and sister-in-law works and makes for a suspenseful relationship. They are both strong characters and attracted to each other and after the initial agreement start the complications are just starting. :-) You do wish this book would be longer like her full length novels now but it has the benefit of not having any hokie religious philosophies or weird hobbies as gimmicks.

Book Description.......2004-05-08
From the Back Cover:
They were as different as a falcon and a butterfly: he, the subtle, soaring hunter; she, vulnerable and trembling with fear; he, the arrogant, iron-willed Lord Brockhaven; she, the ragged gypsy girl dragged from the woods to be jailed as a poacher, or--worse still--handed over to the pleasure of Robert, the young master of Brockhaven's domain.
The gold medallion around her neck was Liza's only protection--the key to a new life and a fortune beyond her wildest dreams. But what was the worth of life as a fine English lady ...what was the use of a fortune if her wild gypsy heart forever longed for a love that could never be?
the werewolf ain't the only wolf in this story.......2002-12-15
Ostracized by both gypsy and English because of her parents' mixed marriage, Liza, her parents, and grandmother, had travelled together in a gypsy wagon. Now everyone is dead and gone leaving Liza travelling alone. Mistaken for a poacher, she is taken before Alex, Earl of Brockhaven and his brother Robert. Alex and Robert recognize the distinctive gold medallion she wears and eventually it is discovered that she is an heiress to a fortune since her grandfather was the Marquis of Chadbourne.
Her appearance also means that her cousin Isabella and her husband Vincent have lost the bulk of their fortune --- although they are by no means poor. Isabella is a famous beauty from h*** (the girl you'll luuuuuv to hate) and Vincent seems like an amiable gentleman and much put upon husband by comparison. By a quirk of fate, Alex is her legal guardian --- which works just fine for him since he has quite a history with Isabella and Vincent and has been waiting for just this opportunity for some well deserved payback. Yes, it's the ol' wolf-for-guardian-watching-ward-as-lamb ploy and provides ample opportunity for their increasing attraction to each other.
Speaking of wolves, along the way, werewolves and murder get mixed into the pot and Liza and her new friend, Ellen, get embroiled in scrapes that ---as always with the Curtises --- means some pretty good laughs. Robert fills what I call the Cat Role (fellow Windflower fans will know what I mean) well enough and, since this IS strictly a regency-type overall it's a pretty light story both in terms of emotions and love scenes, as it were. Still, gotta admit Eliza's swim in the pool was pretty memorable . . . but I digress.
I was rather torn between 3 and 4 stars for this one. While this story was very good, I also felt, at times, that it could have been a little better. Just a little more polish, or something, if you catch my meaning. However, I first read it a long time ago and always remembered it and recently found it and re-read it. It's ability to remain memorable enough to stay in my mind after so many years (and so many other stories) was what finally prompted the 4 stars. Enjoy, friends.
Incredibly Good!.......2000-11-07
Every one of Sharon & Tom Curtis' (aka Laura London) books is a treasure (there are so few of them!), but to me "The Gypsy Heiress" is their best Regency. From the very first sentence to the very last, it is like reading a beautiful, delightful, and gripping poem while hearing the poignant gypsy violin in the background. Lisa, the young half gypsy, half English nobility, is the sweetest, noblest girl you ever read. The cynical Alex, or Lord Brockhaven, is NOT the regular high-born rake. They both went through hardships in life but emerged strong and compassionate. Their love story is breath-takingly beautiful. If my 15-year old daughter wants to start reading a romance book, I would definitely recommand "The Gypsy Heiress".
another wonderful book from sharon and tom curtis.......2000-07-12
if you can find a copy of this book grab it and don't let it go. great for an evening read. good plot, funny moments, and a happy ending. i buy anything they write. wish they would write more. this one is also on my do not loan list
