Book Description

Does the journey toward finding a mate for life have to be filled with anxiety? desperation? fret? or regret? Not according to bestselling author Michelle McKinney Hammond who expertly navigates the choppy waters of singledom—for both men and women—and warmly encourages those stuck in the dead–end dating scene as well as those on an involuntary relationship fast that marriage could be on the horizon.

With her tell–it–like–it–is style using biblical examples, Michelle urges readers to place their need for love in perspective, take life off hold, live purposefully, and gain a basic understanding of successful relating with the opposite sex.

This unique format is presented for both sides of the single coin. Women will welcome Michelle’s sisterly advice and men will appreciate the insider information. Together, they comprise the ultimate guide to successfully finding (and keeping) the love of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-08-08

Quick read yet enlightening... It is an excellent book. Reinforced the importance of being still, waiting on God, and being prepared.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-15

This is a great book because it helps you to focus on yourself in the things that you could be doing as a woman instead of sitting around waititng a man. I also like the fact that is very practical. I enjoyed reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for whether you are in search of love or searching for yourself.......2006-05-03

I found this book to be very insightful. As a newly divorced mother of two. I wanted to make sure that I looked for the right things in a man and not just go for anything just to say I have one. It made me think about past relationships and not play the victim in what ocurred. To take a hard look at some of the signs telling me this person is not good for you, but did it anyway. Taught me about not investing my time nor my spirit in a person that is not fit for me. I must first Love myself. She writes as if she is sitting right there saying "Girl you better learn some sense." Execellent job!! I have recommened this book to several friends.

5 out of 5 stars God's Word Stands True.......2006-04-30

I just borrowed this book from my sister a week ago and officially just finished it today. This is one of the best books I have read lately on the issue. Michelle was very real about the position single women are in. Usually we are awaiting the man of our dreams. I have learned that Jesus has to be the man of our dreams first before he can release us to another. Michelle used accurate scripture (the story of Boaz and Ruth--you can read it yourself in Bible) to relate God's plan to send us our husbands. The number one thing that I took away from this book is that we are single for a reason. It is usually because God is dealing with us as we are. He wants a deeper relationship with us before we have to share our love with him and someone else. "Ending the search for Mr. Right" will allow you to "Begin the search for true happiness!"

1 out of 5 stars A Bunch of Bull.......2006-03-18

I don't even want to elaborate on the crap this woman has written. But readers should be aware. First of all, how can a person take advice from someone who is in her mid to late 40s and never married? What can she tell a sister about finding the "right" mate when she haven't even found him for herself? What a hypocrite! 'Do as I say, not as I do' syndrome.

It's a sin and a shame that people will cheaply cling their paws into lonely women and write anything to soothe their burning flesh just for the sake of fame and fortune. Ladies, I say, see what Jesus says about love and marriage and stay away from the predator writers who lean unto their own understanding.

5 out of 5 stars The saddest man I know.......2006-12-14

I gave this book to the saddest man I know, and that is saying a LOT because I spend tons of time on the internet. Anyway, he said he would read it and he said the advice was decent but he still hasn't been laid in months and in fact is considering going gay.
Oh well at least it got there on time.

1 out of 5 stars This book gets an "F".......2006-09-20

This book is downright ridiculous. It is mainly the author's personal stories and has little if any realistic advice for dating or improving your skills. I wanted ideas, but instead got useless stories about how being a shoe salesman, or running into a girl from a religious organization led to the author getting a one-night stand. Others are just plain bizarre- like how to pick up girls at an abortion clinic. I will concede that it does have a few good points- if you can get it without having to pay anything for it, I would also say go ahead. But the author comes off as a bit egotistical, and as an uneducated guy trying to pull of a get-rich-quick scheme. The reviews of the book all use far better diction and style than this work. The wise man learns from the mistakes of others- don't waste your money like I did.

2 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2006-05-11

After I read this book I got the feeling that if this man had spent more time working on this book instead of trying to pick up women he could have written a much better book. This book has a few good recommendation in it but not enough to justify the price. There are much better books on the subject of meeting and dating women. "How to succeed with women" by Ron Louis and David Copeland is my recommendation. It's cheaper and gives 100 times more practical advice. If you find "Over 200 Proven Ways and Places to Pick Up Girls " on sale for a $1 somewhere go ahead and buy it. Otherwise don't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars misleading title.......2005-06-04

You'd never know there were 100 women interviewed or that they said anything at all to the author.

I thought this book could give some insight to the female mindset, especially in situations where they're being approached, but alas, it's 200 high school cookie-cutter tricks for approaching women.

3 out of 5 stars yeah whatever........2004-08-21

It's a funny book. Which is really the best you can hope for in this type of literature. If you are really hinging your hopes of scoring on a book - well just buck up and hire a pro. seriously. And toss that guilt out the window about it. This book ain't gonna change your life - but for what it is, it did make me chuckle now and again.

Book Description

Journalist Steven Bereznai — presentable, accomplished, well educated, successful, and in his early 30s — has never had a boyfriend. “Is Singlesville my final destination?” Bereznai wonders. Or does a partner await? And what does he really want? To pair up, or to maintain the independence of a single life? Now in Gay and Single . . . Forever?, Bereznai investigates the basic question of whether there can be acceptance for him and other single gay men—as single men—where the push to partner with a man has replaced the pressure to marry a woman.
Bringing together a perfect mix of personal narrative, historical research, interviews with dozens of gay men — including Andrew Holleran, Michael Bronski, and Wayson Choy — and intensely penetrating social and psychological insight, Gay and Single . . . Forever? will resonate deeply among gay men —many of whom, even today, spend most of their lives not in a relationship.

1 out of 5 stars Not a practical book for the single guy.......2007-07-26

Sorry, this book wasn't for me. I gave it a chance, but its language just didn't reach out to me. But mostly, it just wasn't practical enough for me. There were interesting stories shared, like the one where the "friends with benefits" guy actually steps up and helps the author paint in a moment of crisis. Don't get me wrong, that was really sweet. There were a few moments like that.

But I'm newly single and trying to figure out how to date, and this didn't help me do that. I was looking for bulleted lists. Checklists. Nuts and bolts. Succinct and discrete steps. I didn't get that.

4 out of 5 stars LOOKING FOR LOVE....or not.......2007-01-27

Bereznai, Steven, Gay and Single...Forever?: 10 Things Every Gay Guy Looking for Love (and Not Finding It) Needs to Know. Avalon 2006

Wow!!!!!!! That is a title for you. Here in this original, quite brave and easily arguable book comes a formula on what and what not to do about being single. The thesis concerns whether it is better to be single or not. It seems that since we became "liberated" after Sonewall, after the marches on Washington and after the multitude of changes in attitudes toward us, that gay men are opting to be, shall we say, unattached. Yet, on the other hand, there is a great deal being said about being partnered. Bereznai examines the issues of whether there is room for a single gay guy in today's modern society. He does this by interviews with gay men, through personal revelations and with detailed commentary based on both psychological and social thought. He wrote this book for us, and especially for the man who wants to stay single.

Berenzai starts off by telling us that the talk of gay marriage and being partnered, which has been such a hot topic of conversation, is "whimsy" as long as there are so many more important issues facing us. Yet essentially the struggle today is for equality--the enemy has not changed--it is still hate and fear. In other words, it is the same old war, just the battles are different.

This book is the result of a search for intimacy at a time when "gay singles are the new pariahs". (Interesting thought). Bereznai uses his own state of perpetual singledom as he sets out to explain his work. And what he has discovered while being single releases his thoughts about the needs of gay men and thereby gives a chronology of the shifting of relationships and how this has affected the cultural and political life of the entire gay community. His writing is heartfelt and witty at the same time. Although he writes from the heart, he doesn't ignore the mind or the other parts of the body. His remarks are "right on", sometimes so true that they hurt. This is a book for all those who live without love but want it very badly. There are times that I felt I was reading Carrie Bradshaw's column. One critic has called this book the "new gay bible". It certainly will help you understand why you never brought the lucky guy home to meet the folks.

Allow me to share some of the chapter titles with you. We start off with "Gay is good--being gay and single used to be, too". How about "Husbands and boyfriends don't guarantee happiness" and "Boyfriends can be like prostitutes---Prostitutes can be like boyfriends". And then there is my favorite, "Wanting to be with someone is natural....not wanting to stay with him is, too" Paul Rudnick, the gay playwright is quoted on the back cover, "Being gay and single is the new smoking. It won't be socially acceptable anymore, and you will have to go outside." That pretty well sums the book up.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2006-11-15

This book gave me a new perspective on life. Being gay and single most of my adult life I felt a sense of guilt when not in a relationship. Bereznai analyzes some of the reasons why westernized culture puts pressure on everyone, including gay men, to be a couple. His writing is both funny, intelligent and inspiring. I highly recommend this book to any gay man that is having guilt over not being in a relationship.

5 out of 5 stars A book that tells it like it is........2006-10-28

When I first started reading 'Gay and Single....Forever?' I wanted others to read it. I then thought that my coupled friends wouldn't understand it so why tell them about it. When I finished it I wanted to give a copy to all my friends that are in a string of never ending long term relationships and say, "you want to know what it is like being me? - read this book!"

Steven Bereznai touched upon so many things that you don't talk about with your coupled friends so you think that you are the only one experiencing them. He has so many of the same memories and experiences that I myself have had, it was uncanny at times. I have read other books about Cultures of Desire and Male Couple guides, and many had some interesting points, but I related to this book from start to finish. It was very hard to put down.

As I began reading, I found there were many things I wanted to highlight, as I do when I am reading a book or article for work, but I felt that it would be absurd to use a yellow highlighter on a book I was reading for pleasure. I decided to just turn down the corner edge on a page where I read a phrase of interest. By the end, I had marked so many pages, because there was a phrase or paragraph that hit home, that half the corners of the book are now turned down.

There should be discussion groups set-up to discuss this book and I'd be the first to sign-up.

What a great read!

5 out of 5 stars Very thorough!.......2006-10-07

This book is one of the most thorough works of the existing literature around on gay men and relationships. The author has done an excellent job researching romantic love and the love lives of gay men and why so many are still single. Without pathologizing single gay men or the gay male community he presents a balanced and objective viewpoint of why so many gay men stay single. Hopefully this will end any shame single gay men might feel and take on all the blame!

5 out of 5 stars Great designs.......2007-09-02

I bought this book after seeing one of the hats on "Knitty Gritty" and was not disappointed. The designs are wearable and just beautiful, and instructions are clear and thoughtfully given. There are many sweater designs here that I will eventually knit up. Can't wait.

5 out of 5 stars Something for all experience levels.......2007-03-01

I love this book! It's as simple as that. I love the dogs (how did the photographer get them to do that?), I love to look at the handsome (the "take home to met the folks" type) male models, and most of all I love the patterns. There is something for every experience level, from small/easy dog toys to a sweater that incorporated cables AND fair isle, which will be my first project as soon as I finish my current project. (I can't wait) I've read a few tutorials in the front of a few knitting books in my time, and this one is very well written, with easy to understand sizing charts for men and for dogs, both of which can be hard to find.

You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A great one for your knitting library.......2007-02-28

It is so hard to get decent knitting patterns for men --this book delivers. The doggie patterns are cute too.

5 out of 5 stars Love the book!.......2007-02-28

I currently have no family of the four legged variety (does one count a crawling baby?) but I have plenty of plans for the mens patterns! Snatched this from my local B&N as soon as it came out, and I love it. Definetely recommend!

3 out of 5 stars it's ok.......2007-01-10

men's fashion has always been disappointing, and men's knitting projects are no exception. try as they may to push the envelope, most of the designs look acceptable for heathclif huxtable and no one else. a few of the patterns have potential if you change yarns from those suggested, but there really isn't anything here that you can't find in every other men's knitting books.

overall, it's just ok. not a lot to get excited about.

Thich Nhat Hanh shares heartfelt moments in his own development—drinking the clear water of a hermit's well; becoming a monk to practice for his generation, society, and the world, and falling in love. Cultivating the Mind of Love-interweaves these themes with an examination of Buddhist texts.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and spiritual influence in our daily lives........1999-01-17

This is a "can't stop reading" book. I have read Thich Nhat Hanh books before but this book is my favorite until now.Every page is filled with compelling teachings of buddhism and beauttiful thoughts. The book is a love story in which, Hanh basically combines the teachings of Buddah with the story of his first love. While reading this book you feel the love in the air and become totally happy. Don't believe me, find out for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-09-08

I love this book. I first read it at the library and then I had to get it for my own personal collection. It's really good. I suppose it's more for teens but it has lots of tips adults can use too. I'm actually 20 and I first read this when I was 18. It's got things on flirting, dating, kissing, relationships, friends and family, being healthy, skin stuff, makeup stuff. It's really cool and it's written like it is input from the 4 girls with also some input from Tony, Nesta's brother. And I think there might have been input from one of their mom's too.
So buy this book it rocks! you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Realistic!.......2006-04-16

This was so funny, like it had actually been written by teenage girls. I really related to things that real teenagers think about with nothing held back. It was cute and informative in a funny way. Fun too pick up and read or skim through whenever!

4 out of 5 stars Great but could have been more.......2005-10-31

It was great! Especially the section of Things to do when you're grounded & how to redecorate your room. However, there could have been more information about FRIENDSHIPS and how to deal with them, instead of them acting like all of us already have perfect friends and we don't have any of those problems. otherwise it's great and a fun read

Book Description

Every woman's been there and some have been there again and again! Best-selling author Bradley Trevor Greive (BTG) understands (really, he does) the very essence of woman's age-old quest for her soul mate, the endlessly frustrating search for "Mr.Right." Women from all walks of life ask, "Why is a good man so hard to find'" BTG has the raw objectivity, brutal honesty, and deep insight into the male psyche (after all, he is the enemy) to provide a credible answer: "Hey, maybe there aren't any!" Bradley Trevor Greive again has combined witty, original text with superb, side-splitting photographs (retro images of people this time) to perfectly illustrate a simple, but powerful message about how we choose to live our life and who we choose to share it with. Looking for Mr. Right is one of the most hilarious, uplifting books for women ever written and makes an absolutely ideal gift for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Lighthearted fun.......2006-10-04

First of all, those who gave this book low ratings (such as the gentleman who called it male-trashing filth) must not "get it." This isn't supposed to be deep and heavy...so of course the text is simple and to the point (it's a picture book, for heaven's sake, people). This book is not meant to seriously bash males...it's more like a caricature portrayal. Men and women are different, and we should just laugh at it because that's not going to change anytime soon. Greive helps us to do just this. As a man, I'm sure he wouldn't go around bashing men in a serious way...how many times have female comedians stood onstage poking fun at the female stereotypes of being emotional, or catty, or in love with shoes?? Sure not every female is like that, but there are certain stereotypes in our world that make for great humor when it's done in fun. This book is both humorous and inspiring. I bought it when i was single, and I also gave it as gifts to friends -- single & looking, recently single, and even married. My boyfriend saw it on my coffee table this weekend and started looking through it...he thought it was hilarious! The vintage pictures are great, and although it pokes some light fun at the guys, by the end of the book the message is serious and poignant - don't try to be anything but who you are, and in doing so everything else will fall into place in its own way and time. This is a great gift for any girlfriend going through a breakup, as well as those who are single and feeling a little disenchanted. My only regret is that there are only 5 stars, because this book deserves many more!

5 out of 5 stars Hysterically funny!.......2005-09-05

and unfortunately, soooo accurate! Any woman who has loved or tried to love a man will love this book. A side-splitter!

1 out of 5 stars Disgusting, anti-male garbage.......2004-10-16

This piece of filth was written by a self-loathing male and is bought by misandric, self-centered imbeciles. It's nothing but a grocery list of men's faults and an insinuation that women, in contrast, are perfect. Even violence against men is joked about: suggestions of women shooting men and even severing their private parts.

If there were a similar book about WOMEN being awful, NOW would have sent death threats to the publishing house. Ridiculing men for about a hundred pages is no different.

This piece of sexist garbage is for the woman who says how much she hates men -- and then wonders aloud why no one will go out with her. Who in his right mind would?

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2003-12-31

I received this book as a gift. I LOVED it, the pictures and the one liners were funny, true and really made me think. I had to purchase this book for my sister. We all are looking for "that one" what this man said was "I am the one" be true to yourelf. then you will find truth, love and Mr Right. Thanks!

1 out of 5 stars Ugh.......2003-04-07

Anyone with 5 spare minutes could have written the text for this book - I found it very cliche - I'll admit some of the photos are decent - but really why would you pay money for this? So-so" photos don't make a good book.

Book Description

Do you ever obsess about whether to order dessert, buy those pricey sandals, or be totally honest on a third date?

If so, then you are already acquainted with the fear of being fat, broke & lonely. If only we could eat less, get paid better, and be more outgoing.

Only it's not that simple. Our endless quest to be fit, flush, and partnered (no matter where we fall on the scale) inevitably makes us feel fat, broke & lonely. The symptoms are anxiety, shame, and fear, and the diagnosis is feeling miserable about ourselves. We have two choices: give up, convinced that this is just a lifelong, losing battle, or go toe-to-toe with our negative self-image and take back our lives.

Real-life anecdotes, practical strategies, and a touch of sass make this revolutionary five-step plan a must-read. First, Moran helps us discover the root of the symptoms. Then we learn how to break up with fat, broke & lonely for good. And finally, we learn how to hook up with the life of our dreams—and who doesn't want that?

5 out of 5 stars Practical and motivating.......2007-10-09

I saw Victoria speak at Vegetarian Summerfest 2007. I knew I needed to get one of her books. This was a quick read with tons of useful information. You can tell Victoria has professional and personal experience with being fat, broke and lonely. I recommend this to all my clients.

5 out of 5 stars Bought it for a friend and ended up reading it myself!.......2007-10-09

I originally bought this book for a friend as a joke because she was, as the title describes, fat, broke, and lonely. But since her birthday was 2 weeks away I thought I would "browse" through it. Well, I ended up reading it, and loving it. Then went out and bought myself another one of Victoria's books, Younger By The Day. It is equally inspiring. I highly recommend her work!

3 out of 5 stars Good Writing but Nothing New.......2007-09-18

Victoria Moran certainly has a way with her writing style, injecting humor and an understanding of her subject matter into the book. However, there wasn't much 'new' information in her book.

I did like how she presented the information in her book so it was a good read, but as far as picking up any new insights, well, there really weren't any.

5 out of 5 stars Victoria has done it again!.......2007-09-04

Victoria Moran has done it again with this book - fantastic, wise and funny advice that actually works and is very doable. Anyone who has trouble with her bank account, love affairs, or food relationship MUST read this book and keep it by her bedside. I have been a fan of Victoria's since I read her Love Powered Diet, which I am happy to learn is being reissued. It too is a compassionate, well written book. Victoria is an amazing writer. Many self help books are written in the same way, with the same tone - but Victoria is a wordsmith so everything she puts on paper is fun to read. Thank you!

This is the absolute best book I have read on the subject. Practical, sensible, no nonsense advice.

Sometimes when you look around, it seems as if the entire world is coupled up. Family, friends, that cute twosome holding hands walking down the street, everyone is either married or in a serious, committed relationship. If you're not one of those people, the world can seem a lonely place. But why is that? Why can't a person be both single and happy?

Xavier Amador, coauthor of When Someone You Love Is Depressed, and Judith Kiersky attack this question in this clear and wonderfully written book. Using case studies and drawing on years of clinical work as psychologists and professors, the authors investigate the basis of both men and women's dissatisfaction as singles. Tracing the roots of the stigma of aloneness, they examine the obstacles that prevent singles from being content--everything from family and friends to fear and ambivalence. They then describe the four stages of being single, and finally, they give you the tools that will enable you to "be single in the present." Unlike other self-help books dealing with singledom, the goal of this book is not to get you married; it's to figure out why you're single and to help you gain balance and happiness as you are.

Whether you've never married or are divorced or widowed, whether you wish to remain single or to eventually have a meaningful relationship, this book will guide you in bypassing the "cultural scripts" that demand you need a mate to be fulfilled. The authors show that life can be great on your own. --Jenny Brown

Book Description

You Can Be Single and Happy. Whether you are actively looking for a mate or have decided that marriage isn't what you want right now, psychotherapists Xavier Amador and Judith Kiersky can help you deal with the problems that come from being single in a couples' world. Drawing on years of clinical experience and research with both single and married clients, Amador and Kiersky have identified the five common stumbling blocks that can get in the way of enjoying singlehood. Taking a careful look at the obstacles that cause single people the most pain, the authors have developed a four-step plan to help you achieve balance and happiness -- whether or not you stay single. And the first and most challenging step is to stop buying into old-fashioned ideas about singlehood and marriage. Combining clear advice and vivid case examples, Being Single in a Couples' World gives all of us the tools we need to find our way to a healthier self and more meaningful relationships.

Arrived on time and packaged well! The item was just as I expected it to be and in great condition.

1 out of 5 stars No new information here..................2005-04-03

I found this book very difficult to get through and skipped many pages along the way.
If you are a single person who doesn't "blame" anyone for being single you won't want to waste your money on this book.
The main reason I bought the book was the caption on the bottom of the cover "how to be happily single while looking for love". I can honestly say I belive the authors forgot to include that section in the book.
The information provided is repetetive, it points out how our culture views single people, how much pressure they receive and from which direction the pressure comes from. If you are single none of the information in this book will be a revelation to you.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any single, any age!.......2002-11-20

I bought this book used because I wasn't sure of it. This is a good book for those evaluating why they are single. It's not a "how to" book for meeting men but rather a book that looks at your "life script" and how it creates a self-fullfilling prophecy that keeps you being single. Written by a therapist who has worked with many singles, Once you figure out what you keep telling yourself, accept responsibility for your part in being single then you can be happy about being single and open to other possibilities....

3 out of 5 stars Some good information but hard to get through...........2002-02-21

I found this book difficult to read but it had some very good information that makes you stop and think. The most important point to me that was brought to light was in regards to blaming. The authors point out how singles blame...themselves, parents, men, women, etc...for their single status. Explaining how subtle and insidious this cycle of blame can be was very informative and helpful. Some of the replies that the authors tell you to use against some of the hurtful comments that singles get, were ridiculous to me. I sort of lost faith around that point in the book, but luckily that was toward the end. All in all, there are some valid points in this book and it is definately worth a look.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a book that eliminates the guilt of singlehood.......1999-11-24

Pretty good book. Helps you get over the feeling that if you're single you're a freak. Gives guidance on how to get comfortable with singlehood, how to resist well-meaning but demeaning comments from parents and others who think the whole world should be married, and how to make decisions involving your status. Some of the case studies border on being a little tedious, but with hindsight, I see the purpose they fill. I'd recommend this book to any single adult.

Book Description

Dubbed one of the summer's hottest beach reads by People, Glamour, Cosmo, and the Weekend "Today" show, Tabloid Love introduces Bridget Harrison, an almost thirty-year-old Brit and rookie reporter for the New York Post. While her London friends begin to marry, Bridget chases her dream of becoming a hard-news journalist. But just as she perfects the art of interviewing strangers about ghoulish crimes, she discovers that finding a mate seems impossible in the ultimate singles city. Then Bridget lands her very own Post dating column, and half a million New Yorkers read about her weekly romantic disasters. Whether covering celebrity parties in the Hamptons or struggling to hide her inter-office crush, Bridget retains such humor and humility "you'll not only root for her, you'll wish she were your best friend." (Harper's Bazaar)

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise..........2007-09-14

I had many reasons to feel wary of "Tabloid Love," not least of which that it is described as "Bridget Jones Meets 'Sex and the City.'" I mean, seriously? I know that's intended as an upsell, but it sounds like my idea of hell. But, since I knew this was a true story and I was in a exploratory mood, I bought a copy. Much to my surprise, I loved it. This is more than just an examination of dating in New York City. It's also a very entertaining look at the day-to-day life of a tabloid reporter and a rumination on the mysteries (and myths) of companionship. I enjoyed Bridget Harrison's escapades tremendously and appreciated her lack of egotism and smugness. She doesn't pretend to have all the answers like Amy Cohen (author of "The Late Bloomer's Revolution") and doesn't get bogged down in vanity like Jane Juska ("A Round Heeled Woman"). I wasn't hugely crazy about the last third of "Tabloid Love," which details a summer Harrison spends writing about the Hamptons, but overall this book was a delight. I will be recommending it to a lot of people.

5 out of 5 stars Poignant and funny!.......2007-08-14

I hadn't been to New York in over 10 years until this summer when I was there on my book tour. While at Book Expo, I picked up Bridget Harrison's book, tucked it into my bag, and cracked it open on the airplane ride home. What a smart and funny read -- and a great way to recapture the New York I'd just visited! BH is a sharp and clever writer, and somehow manages to come off as resilient and fabulous in the midst of multiple dating disasters. What a pleasure to read!

This book was amazingly funny. i absolutely loved it. i wish it was longer or she could make another one because this book is seriuosly the best ive read so far!U HAVE TO READ IT!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read, At Least For A While.......2007-02-14

I enjoyed the first half of this book. It is an entertaining look at the New York dating scene. But as I progressed in Ms. Harrison's narrations of her dating successes and failures, I found myself less and less impressed with her. She is certainly not as shallow as some of the over the top characters she describes, but she is nonetheless more shallow than I had initially hoped. Her countless descriptions of her name brand outfits and how sexy she can be (the bathroom transformation on the airplane is particularly tiresome) made her unsympathetic in the end. While I recognize that this was part of the story - her failed and contrived attempts to play the New York game - it nonetheless did not make for a satisfying book. It was hard to continue reading a book about a woman in search of love who, in the end, I didn't really think had the raw material to sustain a healthy relationship. At the end of the day, we want our heroines to be sympathetic, and this one didn't deliver.

3 out of 5 stars Bridget, you ignorant slut.......2007-01-21

OK, I admit this book was entertaining. However, Bridget needs to learn not to give it up quite so easily! My goodness. She should be ashamed of herself. Having said that, the book is a bit of a guilty pleasure.
