Really helpful.......2006-11-11
I thought this book was very helpful and gave keen insight into the love God has for us. It gives many suggestions to enter into His presence and bask in His love. I found it a real encouragement.
Accepting Our Acceptance in Christ.......2005-05-08
"Into Abba's Arms" is a passionately written, biblical guide for spiritual intimacy with the God who calls Himself "the Father of the Fatherless." Author Sandra Wilson begins the journey by exploring the cavity in the human soul--a cavity that Augustine described as "God-shaped" and that I like to think of as "God-sized." "Why do we have a hole in our soul?" Wilson encourages us to ask. Like Augustine, she finds her answer in the biblical truth that we were created for an intimate relationship with the Creator of the universe.
Wilson also follows in the steps of Martin Luther who insisted that Christian understand who they are in and to Christ. Or, as I like to summarize it, we must learn to "accept our acceptance" in Christ.
She also travels the path of John Calvin, who taught that true knowledge consists of knowing God, knowing ourselves as bearers of God's image, and knowing how to relate to the God whose image we bear. Like Augustine, Luther, and Calvin, Wilson realizes that life is not about "self-acceptance for the sake of self-love," but rather about "acceptance in Christ for the sake of glorifying God and being empowered to minister to others."
Through "Into Abba's Arm," Wilson leads you home to the home you always longed for--a home where Abba, Daddy, God the Father, is your most cherished Friend, and a home where you live the life you were intended to live from eternity past.
Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of "Soul Physicians: A Theology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction," "Spiritual Friends: A Methodology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction," and the forthcoming "Sacred Companions: A History of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."
I found the key to acceptance and security in God's love!!!.......1999-09-26
Never, never have I read any book that so perfectly diagnosed my condition. What a loving God we have - and how very much He longs to tell us. But the masks we wear to prevent that relationship is tragic. Sandy Wilson pictures it all so well - and in a gentle and loving way. She gives great encouragement that an intimate God is just a breath away - if we seek. Thank you dear Sandy, for your ministry.
A must for anyone who desires a full relationship with God........1999-06-07
It is not often that I call a book must reading, but this one certainly is. Sandra Wilson has written in such a way as to draw any reader closer to God. It is especially good for anyone with any kind of sense of having been left alone and lonely. But is is also a must for those who believe that they are closer to God than ever. I have reccomended it to many of my counseling clients and have bought and given copies to all of my children, my husband and my parents. If you don't read anything else this year, read this.
A MUST for anyone who wants to draw closer to God.......1999-05-20
This is the best book I have ever read on seeking a personal relationship with God. I have read it for myself, given one to every member of my family and several friends and am recommending it almost daily to people I see in my Christian counseling practice. A book for anyone who has ever wondered where God is and haven't we all?
Book Description
Every parent who has lost a child has dealt with disturbing, haunting questions. Why my child? Where is my baby now? Will I ever see my child again?
Renowned Bible expositor John MacArthur tackles the question of infant death (in the womb or following birth) in his trademark style-with detailed attention to Scriptures that hold the answers. No death occurs apart from the purposes of God, MacArthur assures readers, just as no life occurs apart from the purposes of God.
With a pastor's heart, he leads readers to an understanding of the eternal destination of these precious little ones. His conclusion: Babies-and anyone else who has not reached the condition of accountability-go to heaven when they die, and there will, indeed, be a time of blessed reunion with these souls.
This comforting book is certain to bring consolation to those experiencing this most painful loss.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-09-26
This little book was a great comfort to me after the death of our unborn son. It is not a touchy-feely book but rather a real look at scripture which offers the only REAL hope and comfort. I am planning on buying this for any of my friends that go a loss in the future.
excellent.......2005-12-10
I have never had a doubt in my mind that babies and young children that die go to heaven. To me, it has always been a matter of common sense. Just knowing about God's character has always been proof enough for me. His divine grace knows no bounds. His mercy is greater than His wrath. Coming to earth in human form to die for our sins, even though we don't deserve it, is the greatest proof of this. Therefore, I have always believed that His grace covers those that have not yet developed the intelligence to distinguish between right and wrong. However, I wanted my beliefs to be based on more than just my own intuition. I wanted Scriptural proof beyond the concepts of God's unfailing love and all encompassing grace. Unfortunately, I am no theologian. As such, I often need help in looking for the answers I seek within Scripture. Thankfully, John MacArthur has published this well-researched and theologically sound book on the subject of infant death.
MacArthur points to Scripture after Scripture that prove that infants instantly go to heaven when they die. If you had any doubt on this subject before, your doubt will fade away after reading this excellent and comforting book.
Of course, there are those that have the opposite opinion. Some believe that since we are all born into a sin nature, that if we have not had a chance to except Christ into our hearts, then we are lost forever. This, of course, includes children. However, this totally discounts the saving grace of God. God's grace is so much bigger than we ever realize. It is not limited to our feeble understanding of His ways. Personally, I can't imagine being under leadership within a church that espouses the teaching that infants who die go directly to hell. It is unfathomable to me how anyone can believe this. It seems very contradictory to what Scripture shows us to be true.
Then, there are those who have decided that Scripture does not say anything on the subject. Therefore, the truth of the matter can not be known to us. We are to just trust that God will do what is right. However, it seems to me that this is just a cop-out. While it's true that we should always put our faith in God to do what is right (he is a good God!), He has also given us His Scripture for study and meditation. He does have something to say to us on this subject and it is our responsibility to diligently study His Word to know the Truth. Even if this means we must go outside of ourselves and seek guidance from those that have more wisdom on Scriptural concepts than we do.
Hope.......2005-10-22
My wife and I lost our precious daughter Hope after only thirty mintues with her. I knew a little about what the bible teaches on the subjects and where to find the basics, so I knew that she was with God. I still I found this book to be extremely helpful in fleshing out the whole topic and answering some questions I could not find the answers to on my own. I especially admired how Dr. MacArthur relied on Scripture for his entire argument. There was no wishful thinking in this volume just sound biblical teaching.
A warning: If you have recently lost a little one this book is hard to read because of the sad stories.
A plug: However, this book is worth reading when you are ready.
Wonderful, but has some views that are clearly Protestant.......2005-08-12
As a Catholic trying to cope with the loss of a child, I'd say this book is 99% wonderful and 1% that I'm not in agreement with. This is clearly biblically Protestant in which there are "missing links". Although I completely agree that the Lord is merciful towards babies and innocent young children, I do not agree with what he states about instant Heaven with adults and older children. If you are Catholic or Orthodox, take this into mind and discernment that this is not in junction with the teaching of our Church. Otherwise its a wonderful tool in knowing that our babies are very much alive in Heaven waiting for their families.
Faith and Hope from Heaven.......2005-08-10
I was given this book when my 4 1/2 month old son passed away and I can honestly say that this book has brought me comfort for the fact that I know my son is up in Heaven with God, his great grandparents and other children who have left this earth much too early. John MacArthur lets us know, through scripture readings, that God turely holds these babies and children safe with him in Heaven. I know that one day I will be reunited with my 4 1/2 month old son (along with my other children) in Heaven and I will never have to leave them again. I look forward to the day when I can join them in Heaven, but until then, John MacArthurs book reassures me that they are safe and perfect and that nothing can ever hurt them.
If you are looking for a book about the truth of God and Heaven for little ones, then this is it. You will not be disappointed with this book at all!
Book Description
For women who struggle with disillusionment, abandonment, our own limitations, and the lies that whisper we're not beautiful, Connie Neal tells of her Cinderella story and her God who longs to fill every woman's deepest hopes and dreams.
Customer Reviews:
The real Cinderella story.......2006-03-27
We are raised with the notion that we will find our one true prince and live happily ever ever but wonder what has happened when we find ourself covered in ashes ("cinder"-ella) and alone. Don't settle for waiting or wanting to be treated like a princess, you can only treat yourself that kindly from within. The author shows through scripture how God is there and he should be your savior, we are not to put that pressure on our spouse. This book is autobiographical with the author dealing with the struggles of infidility and how easily women lose their self-esteem but can rebuild. She has some great nuggets throughout and you will especially relate if you have lost a parent or dealt with abuse or were simply raised on happily ever after, weren't we all? Highly recommended.
Autobiographical.......2006-03-19
I didn't see the six stars others have. Because the subtitle was "Finding intimacy and fullfillment by following His lead" I thought it would be more general for women looking for purpose and relationship. Instead I found the book to be highly autobiographical. While I enjoyed visiting how God carved the sculpture of her life, I found myself skimming over some of the detail and rabbit trails.
At books' end, though, I remain inspired to know that if God can work through this woman to the levels he has he can work through me similarly.
Dancing in the Arms of God.......2001-03-21
This book is a must read for every christian woman. It speaks to the married as well as the unmarried. I borrowed the book from a friend a few years ago and made notes of key items that I wanted to reflect on later. I review those notes from time to time and am blessed all over again. (I actually have a tab for them in my day planner.) I have recommended this book to a number of friends, who were also blessed by Ms. Neal's words. This will definitely be a stocking stuffer for this Christmas.
An uplifting book for those who need to feel loved.......1999-06-09
This book was very uplifting and encouraging. It puts into perspective who our first love should be, who we should seek out as our "Prince Charming". Uniquely written in Cinderella story form. Quick and easy reading. Scripture references were helpful as well as the study in the back.
An Honest Look at Rebuilding Broken Relationships.......1998-10-20
Connie Neal is one of the best authors I have read. She is honest, and shows courage in this discription of what she and her husband have victoriously overcome. Issues addressed in this book, such as depression and infidelity are everyday occurances. What is NOT so day to day is the forgiveness and love that are spoken of in this awesome book. Read it, and find out for yourself how the lives of two people become even stronger. It is not by their own strength, but by a Father who steps in where they surrender.
Book Description
Alice is making her daughter dinner when her mother Olivia, who left her at a day care center when she was four, appears at her door. Alice has learned almost nothing about Olivia, when suddenly Olivia dies, leaving Alice to sift through her belongings. As she pieces together her mothers life, Alice learns how a woman can become so desperate that she leaves her childand so courageous that she finds her again. Not since her bestselling book The Friendship Cake has Hinton created characters who are so filled with heartache and fragile hope, that they will become a permanent part of the readers life.
Customer Reviews:
beautiful crafted novel ~ a must read!.......2006-02-18
This IS Lynne Hinton's best novel yet. It almost doesn't read like she wrote it only because it is so different than her other books. THE ARMS OF GOD is a lookback into time and threads the mother-daughter relationship into the present. The characters were heartfelt ~ it was a story most touching.
Beautiful artful prose.......2006-02-05
and a wonderful story as well. When Alice excavates the remainders of her dead mother's belongings, she discovers why she was abandoned at 4 years old and the terrible life her mother tried to leave behind. The writing is beautiful, the word choices are fantastic and the prose is artful and so full that you actually miss the characters after you read the final page. A must read!
Artful Story.......2005-12-23
I agree that this is by far Lynne Hinton's best novel to date. It is beautiful and inspiring. The writing is nothing less than art leaping from the pages. Long after the last page has been read, the characters will stay with you. I'd love to read a follow-up to this book!
Wonderful Novel!.......2005-11-30
This is my favorite of all of Ms. Hinton's novels, and I've loved them all. In this story, which repeats some of the themes her other novels addressed (the importance of friendship, the mother-daughter relationship, the ongoing struggles of racism), the emotional depth keeps the reader engrossed to the very end. While it is a very sad story, in the end the novel satisfies our need for redemption and reconciliation. I read this more than a week ago and can't stop thinking about it.
Lynne Hinton feeds my soul!
the meaning of motherhood.......2005-11-20
Narayan of Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE ARMS OF GOD as a sublimely beautiful & sedately stunning read about the quality of motherhood.
When Alice, abandoned as a child & now raising her own daughter, is confronted by the mother who left her, her life changes forever.
THE ARMS OF GOD is a lovely, deep look into the spirit of family values & motherhood. Any woman reading this book will empathize, & even men might too!

Book Description
An intellectual as well as a mystic, St. Teresa of Avila is a beloved figure in Christianity, particularly among women, and often even among non-Christians. Born into Spanish nobility in 1515, she entered the Carmelite monastery in Spain and eventually reformed the way it and the order operated. She was remarkably able to blend a rich mystical inner life with practical work in the secular world - something that inspired modern day Mother Teresa to take her name as her own. Falling into the Arms of God presents key aspects of St. Teresa's life and work in an unparalleled way: it emphasizes modern interpretation and highlights the practical application of her teachings to the lives of contemporary spiritual seekers. Beginning with a brief introduction to her life, the book features seven meditations taken directly from her writings. Each passage is accompanied by an explanation of what lessons it may hold for today's reader, plus a suggestion for guided meditation.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful experience as well as a good read.......2006-09-05
In this simple yet deep book, Megan Don not only captures the essence of St. Teresa, but provides a portal for the reader to experience the mystic's pathway to God. Simple meditations amplify the text discussions, offering meaningful, visceral and lasting understanding of both Teresa and her devotion to God. Brava!
Critique.......2006-04-01
Let Catholics & other Christians beware. There seems to be a hint of New Age philosophy being promoted here. Otherwise, I would recommend it as a guide to meditation based on the theology of St Teresa.

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Comfort.......2001-04-14
This is such a comforitng book, I am only 14, but I think this is the coolest book ever. The "devotions" are short and to the point, but sometimes it seems that there was one written especially for you in your time of need. The pictures are very beautifuladn vivid, they remind me of all the care and detail God put into making this earth. I just love knowing that knowing that God loves me, knows all my pain, and is ready to comfort me. I would recomend this to any one who is in pain.
A small book of great value!.......2000-11-28
The texts are deep and comforting, the photographs are of striking beauty, and the layout and graphics blend everything nicely: Every page of this book is a work of art! It helps us not to forget there is a loving God.
A very inspiring book.......1999-07-24
We recently lost our 11 year old son and this book is never far from me. It has provided me with such comfort, especially when I only have a few minutes to read something. The pictures inside are just beautiful, those alone can bring enomorous comfort and a peaceful feeling. I have given it as a gift many times.
Great support book!.......1998-12-18
When your world has been torn apart and your foundation rocked to the very core, these excerpts and passages remind you that you have rest and peace in the arms of God. Trust in His word and faith in the scriptures noted are a powerful lift on the road to recovery from loss or hurt. Compact size allows you to carry it whereever you go for on-the-spot ministering.
Book Description
This spiritual memoir draws on Hannon's wealth of experience, his family life, childhood and professional life as a high school teacher to show how God is present in every aspect of our lives, how the seemingly mundane events in our lives can reveal the presence of God. For example, the simple act of sitting on a bench at dawn in the middle of San Francisco becomes a spiritual wakening and a morning prayer of praise for an entire city. This collection of poignant, heartbreaking and hilarious short stories is organized around the Liturgy of the Hours.
Customer Reviews:
Refreshingly spiritual and inspirational.......2007-06-21
Father Pat has a unique way of allowing the reader to experience the love of God in everyday, human lives. I laughed, I cried, I marveled, I prayed during my reading of this book. Father Pat also allows us insight into how to accept all of God's beings with dignity, humor and grace, no matter how challenging the situation. I liked how each story was in itself an encounter with God's mercy and love. This book is worth several reads!!
Amazing, wonderful book!.......2006-10-10
I picked up this book from my local library mainly because Fr. Hannon is the Parochial Vicar at my parish. I was interested in his writing, as I absolutely love going to Mass to hear his homily every Sunday--he is an extremely gifted priest. This book is fantastic, and Fr. Pat is truly a man with a tremendous spirit...and a very talented writer. I read the library copy and quickly bought a copy...it is definately a book you will want to read again and again.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO HEAR A STORY?.......2006-10-05
Anyone who likes a good story should like this book. It is a delightful and enlightening work that I have been recommending to my friends. Patrick Hannon, a young Holy Cross priest, generously shares with us tales of his family and his life. They are warm and engaging stories in themselves and Hannon is a great storyteller. And in his faith he reveals to us another dimension of reality -- that of prayer which is laced through the fabric of ordinary life, usually not recognized or recognizable as prayer until a book like this points it out. You will enjoy the book, you will want to pass it on.
An Absolute Delight.......2006-03-23
You don't normally think of spirituality as a "fun read" but this small book can put a whole new spin on the concept of relating to God and when is it, exactly, that we are praying. It is engaging, poignant, thought-provoking (in a positive, non-troubling way) and conveys an optimism about how to live and experience life. I recommend this book to everyone who believes that life has a larger purpose --- if you take its meaning to heart it can make every day of your life a fair bit richer. I received this book as a Christmas present and, in turn, have now given it out as a gift to many of my closest friends and family members --- getting unanimously positive comments in return. This one is really worth it.
Reconnect with God, Others, and Self.......2005-11-01
Patrick Hannon, CSC, is a Holy Cross priest from Oakland, California, who draws on his roots in a large, boisterous family and years of teaching in a Catholic high school to illustrate his belief that prayer is present in every aspect of life. And he suggests that frequently this prayer is accomplished without words. He envisions his mother "speaking to God as a fellow parent" on the countless occasions she waited for the last teenager to come home safely at night. He sees prayer in the Sunday mornings when his father drove him and his three older brothers on their paper routes, then edged into a booth with them at the donut shop "over maple bars, cups of hot chocolate, and the box scores from the sports page." As high school teacher, Hannon has discovered the sacramental aspects of sports, in which elements of nature "become a conduit for divine grace and we celebrate the awesome, ineffable, tangible presence of God in our midst." As a priest sitting vigil with a woman dying of cancer, Hannon found prayer not only in Tessa's reaching for his hand, but also in the setting: "the encompassing darkness, the Van Morrison music, the fluorescent light over the bed..." The best prayers, he has discovered, reconnect us to God and thus to each other and our true selves.
An epilogue following the 21 stories contains an activity appropriate for individuals or faith sharing groups. In it, students are asked to define prayer using metaphors. The range of answers fits perfectly with what Hannon expresses throughout his book.
