12+ years ago when my surgeon told me I had breast cancer (my second bout with cancer), she gave me this book. Not only did it help me develop, sustain and exude a positive attitude during my entire treatment phase, but it made me a touchstone for anyone else who was diagnosed with cancer and contacted me. Since that time, whenever someone that is near and dear to me, someone that I truly love and want to do something positive for when they are diagnosed with cancer, I give them a copy of this book. Not one of them has died to date. My most recent gift of the book has been to my husband and he is visibly changing his attitude as he reads it.

When I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, I read a wide variety of "inspirational" cancer survivor books. The Bloch's Foundation's "Fighting Cancer" (free just contact them) and Norman Cousin's "Anatomy of an Illness" really resonated for me, made sense and reinforced my focus. Bernie Siegel's books on the other hand made me feel that the disease was my fault for having the "wrong" personality and that if I allowed any negative thoughts into my mind, I was putting my recovery in doubt. Heck most of my thoughts during treatment were negative, real negative! I literally threw his books in the trash, probably more of a symbolic gesture, but it felt good. BTW I am cancer free for the last 16 years, fathered a child and getting a kick out every day.
A powerful message but not scientifically prooven.......2007-06-26
Bernie's central theme is that there is a strong correlation between emotional health and physical health. However he rarely cites any scientific evidence for his claim. He keeps repeating this message based on his experiences with random patients. Surely one can conclude many things from random patients, but a theory has to applicable accross a large sample. There has to be a 'control' if the study is to have any scientific merit. I wished he had shown more of these studies.
This would definitely be a five star book had the author been more scientific in prooving his point. Nevertheless I do personally agree with it.
hope, but not false hope.......2007-05-15
I'd pretty much accepted that i was going to die from cancer. My doctors had too. My friend gave me this book and it caused a huge attitude shift in me. Now I feel that I have it within me to heal and live a long happy and healthy life. I've been told there is nothing medically can be done for me. If I hadn't read this book first I would have just laid down and died when they told me. But now I've opened myself up to other tools for healing - good diet, wheatgrass, reiki, meditation and absolutely no sugar. Time will tell, but I think I'm on the right track.
I thought this book was so good that I ordered a copy to give to my oncologist. He's a lovely man and I believe his desire to help his patients will lead him to use this book as a useful tool in the future.

This book was recommended by a friend. He told me he recommends this book to his friends. I ordered the book and read it. The author has written of her own personal lifes experiences: At a young age she was into a wild life-style which is not uncommon for young adults. She stated that because of her life-style, she never felt very happy or fulfilled in many ways. Then...voila! She decided to find god....something 'greater than herself' to help her out. The entire book, in my opinion, is nothing but prosyletizing.... It's certainly not a book I would even suggest to any one I know---believers or not. She wrote of her own, very personal experiences....period. That's fine, I suppose, in and of itself. But... I wouldn't even want to give the book to a stranger.....I put it in with all my paper recycling.

This book is my all time favorite! I have read it multiple times and often open it and read whatever page I open to. It is always relevant to my life, relationships and spiritual growth. Marianne Williamson is blessed with an insight, personal understanding and awareness that bring the Course in Miracles to our everyday experience.

"A Return to Love" is a clear and fluent spiritual love story. Marianne Williamson takes the principles from "A Course in Miracles," and makes them accessible through explanations, anecdotes, personal experiences and simple metaphors that reveal the spiritual journey, one which is quite simply a conscious journey to turn from fear and return to love. I found this book life changing. It is inspiring and motivating. I loved it.

Another self proclaimed spiritual teacher........2007-08-01
An anecdotal story. When I lived in Michigan Williamson was the spiritual leader of a church I attended. Williamson would speak with insight and wisdom on numerous subjects yet was unable to merge her talk with her action. While she often commented on environmental issues she continued to drive an appalling gas guzzler, while she spoke eloquently about the poor, she also happened to live in a mansion, while she provided social political commentary, she also supported Democrats who were bought and paid for by corporations and refused to give equal time to progressive Green candidates, while she noted the disparity between rich and poor, she nevertheless wore Armani gowns and $300.00 dollar shoes. Williamson talks the talk, the problem was a annoying matter of embodiment.
I often read commentaries by Williamson on other spiritual authors books. She uses words like "awakener" and "enlighten" often to characterize these people; the problem with her characterizations says more about the blind leading the blind than it says about anything else. The word the best fits is PollyAnnish to describe her world view as she disseminates her eco-la-la love conquers all routine to the choir of disciples. Williams level of praxis seeks to insure that her photo is on the cover of most of her books followed by a stage big enough to satisfy her monumental ego.
Personally, I would rather read a spiritual book by someone who walks their talk; Williamson is not anywhere near that category of praxis. And I doubt she ever will be.

Profound guide.......2007-08-26
I find this book to be packed with information on the nature of reality. Unlike my experience with many books on spirituality, I find myself returning to this book again and again. The truths that Jesus reveals in modern American English hit home whether he is explaining the nature of the heart, the physics of the universe or the ten commandments. Here is revealed both the deep love of Jesus for all people and an unflinching guide to all of life. All of this is presented free from dogma, free from religiosity, and free from condemnation.

The warmth, love, compassion, wisdom and joy that radiate from this book is, at times, overwhelming! For me, this is a book that one must keep so that it can be referred to time and again, as I simply am not spiritually advanced enough to get most of the information on a first, second and maybe even third pass. All surgeons do not use knives and scalpels, rather many practice a holistic approach -- "love, medicine, and miracles."
Bernie Siegel writes just such a book that every home should have. He shares his factual experiences with exceptional patients, who through much of his efforts, learn valuable lessons about self-healing. Much of Siegel's experiences shared in his "love heals teaching," evolved from his founding ECaP, a group of exceptional cancer and AIDS patients.
Directing the reader to the causes of many of the diseases in the first of two parts in his book, Dr. Siegel helps bring clarity to the reason for these illnesses -- the body embodied by the mind. And after the discovery of the problem, Siegel, in part two, assists the patient to the pathways that in many instances restore total and complete health. Even in death, the author reveals lessons that can only be a must for all.

The mystery of Christ revealed in marriage.......2007-07-01
My wife's background is in clinical psychology/marriage counseling. She has read many books on marriage and this is her favorite. I have been counseling couples and young singles concerning relationships for about 10 years -- it is my favorite as well. I've never read anything quite like it. It's a true synthesis of practical how-to and biblical Christian spirituality. This book is a REAL Christian book (as opposed to much of the seeker-sensitive pseudo-Christian stuff out there) and will not appeal to non-Christians (or to luke-warm "Christians") because at the center of this work, page after page, you will find Jesus. If you are not devoted to Jesus, then what Mike Mason says will not work for you.

This book takes you where most books on marriage and relationship never take you. One of the problems with "help and guidance" books is that most never really address the roots and foundations that experience and life are really built upon. Mike addresses the essentials in a very artistic manner that draws you in and causes you embrace those mysterous truths about marriage and the relationship between a man and woman that most of us miss, unless we are willing to pursue the depths. Include some "practical" books on marriage, but don't leave this one out of your "must read and apply" library.

The author jam packs about 96 pages of content into 224 pages. His message is quite simple and utlimately very helpful, however; the authors extended metaphors and comments are a bit overdone. Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas is a better written and more thoughtful book that covers the same topics.

Amazing book about a Hindu's encounter with a living God........1999-06-27
This is one of the best books I have ever read, and I was unable to put it down, finishing it in a matter of hours. It is the story of a Hindu of noble birth, well educated, and respected in his native India, and his encounter with Jesus Christ. It covers his initial struggles and rejection of Jesus, and how God lovingly revealed himself to Mahesh. It also documents amazing miracles among the poor and needy. I highly recommend this book.

A Refreshing Tale of Life.......2007-08-18
Admit it. You're stuck at a dead end job like the rest of us. Miracle on the 17 Green is about a middle aged guy named Travis who has a hopeless job, a great marriage with three wonderful kids (but doesn't realize it) and some yet to be exposed talent with the golf clubs. Great little tale about all the above and how he goes about learning to appreciate life in general. A wonderful read. Typical Patterson book -- short chapters with easy to follow characters. Highly recommended!!! Give it 4 1/2 stars.

Even an avid golfer will find this a tedious read. The plot is contrived and predictable. The humor is sophomoric at best. It is blessedly short but I'd rather play the worst muni in the world than re-read this book. The only reason I finished it the first time was because I couldn't believe it could grow steadily worse from page to page. If your golfer has any education at all, buy him or her a P.G. Wodehouse book instead: The Heart of a Goof or The Clicking of Cuthbert.

Travis Mckinley is just your average guy...; he hates his job in advertising, his marriage is on the rocks, and he loves golf. Read the book to find out, although it doesn't take an Einstein to conclude the obvious based upon the title of the book. Although I found this a somewhat interesting tale, I believe that to truly appreciate the story one must truly appreciate the game of golf--as do obviously the authors, although unfortunately I do not. Many readers may find themselves struggling with the terminology used within the game. All in all, a serviceable story with an even better lesson. Don't be afraid to take chances, in this one life that we all have to live. Take a gamble on life, and on love.

I am twelve years old, and have great dreams of being a vet some day. I always like to read vet books, and when I found this one at the library I was amazed, it look awsome. I read it, and thought it was even better. I am now looking to purchase a copy, one for me, and one for Nina,(a friend of mine) and one for Kendra(another friend). I think that this is an awsome book, and if you haven't read it you should.
Allan tells wonderful tales of his life as a vet, and the absured treatments that he used. Nothing was too absured, he even untwisted the cow when he couldn't untwist the uterous! He also uses acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
I don't have a pet:(, but if I did I would want a vet like Allan to take care of it for me.

Allen Schoen and Pam Proctor bring us a rich, detailed spectrum of ways in which love, intuition and complementary/ alternative therapies can help animals small and large. This book is rich in anecdotes and reports of healings on physical, psychological and spiritual levels for animals with these approaches after conventional veterinary care had exhausted its potentials to help. Schoen integrates acupuncture, homeopathy and herbal remedies in his practice.
This is a truly wholistic book, addressing body, emotions, mind, relationships and spirit - both of the animals who were helped and of their owners.
Schoen illustrates his work with many heartwarming stories of his challenges and adventures with animals and their owners.
A typical example is Schoen's description of how he nursed a wild hawk who was paralyzed from the neck down following injuries from a power line. Schoen found ways to tame and heal this wary creature so that it could recover, eventually returning to his wilderness home. As with many of his animal patients, Schoen found himself learning and growing in the process of his ministrations.

I knew that if I could establish an intimate relationship with a bird of prey, I could communicate with any animal, no matter how distant or fearsome it might appear to be. Although the term resistance appears infrequently in A Course in Miracles, it is nonetheless a key concept in students' learning the mind-changing lessons of forgiveness that are the Course's central teaching. Indeed, it is the only concept that can satisfactorily explain a phenomenon experienced by most students at some point in their work with the Course. This is the paradox of sincerely attempting to learn and live its principles under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, while experiencing the ongoing frustration of not doing just that.
This paradox is the topic explored in this book, which consists of an edited transcription of a talk given to a group of students by Kenneth Wapnick, supplemented with two articles, co-authored with his wife Gloria, that appeared in the Foundation's newsletter, "The Lighthouse." The focus is on the many forms of resistance, and their basis in the fear of love. Freud's valuable insights are discussed, along with Jesus' role in helping us look without judgment at our investment in maintaining the ego's thought system -- the miracle that resolves the paradox.

This is a great way to begin understanding "The Course In Miracles." I highly recommend it for anyone just starting out or for someone who has reached a plateau and needs a gentle push to keep going.

KW pulls no punches in this lucid exposition of the way the ego will use everything, including the study of A Course in Miracles, to confuse and sidetrack our efforts to choose a different perception. I thought this book was really interesting. I didn't know a lot about Neem Karoli Baba before I read this - now I wish I was old enough to have traveled to India and met him myself. The book is broken up in individual stories so it's easy to read a little at a time ( a great boon to anyone who is busy!)

What can I say, when you read the stories of Maharajji, it moves you on the deepest of levels. Grace and love are the messages of this great saint. I cried and and laughed, and am still laughing 7 years later. He is a wonderful teacher, and will play with you if you get to know him. Blessings.

This book is a marvelous collection of anecdotes and teaching stories from the devotees of Neem Karoli Baba, a true "Avadhoot" (one who has "shaken off" the world, to exist as a wandering vessel of God) of the Hindu tradition, but who transcended all traditional spiritual paths. He was impossible to classify or pin down. Maharaji, as he was lovingly called, would simply wander into a village and stay awhile, while people offered fruits and sat at his feet, then he would abruptly disappear into the jungle. He would laugh, scold, hug, talk briefly, or just sit. Miracles occurred often in his presence. Maharaji's only teachings seemed to be love, serve and see God in everything. No one could keep him in one place, not even police or jail cells. When the time came to leave a place, he just left. He was simply an old man in a plaid blanket, full of humor and love, who shone the Light of Eternal Consciousness.
