Book Description

Philip Yancey probes the very heartbeat—the most fundamental, challenging, perplexing, and deeply rewarding aspect—of our relationship with God: prayer. What is prayer? Does it change God’s mind or ours—or both? This book is an invitation to communicate with God the Father who invites us into an eternal partnership through prayer.

This book should be interesting both to secularists and people of faith. The author's use of epigraphs provide launching points for thoughtful people of all backgrounds.

5 out of 5 stars Honest, inspiring book on prayer.......2007-09-15

Philip Yancey has done it again. His book "The Jesus I Never Knew" is the best book I have read on Jesus. His book, "What's So Amazing About Grace?" is the best book I have read about grace. Now his book, "Prayer: Does it make any difference?" is the best book I have read on prayer. That is a strong statement for me to make, even as a person who loves the writings of Philip Yancey. I have read dozens of great books on prayer, including great books by people like Richard Foster, Ole Hallesby, Bill Hybels and Oswald Chambers.
What sets Yancey's book apart is his brutal honesty about the struggles people have with prayer, balanced with inspiring stories of how prayer has changed people's lives. Yancey is particularly self-effacing about his own struggles with prayer and his feelings of inadequacy in failing to pray. Yet by the end of the book, it is apparent that Yancey is much more of a prayer warrior than he admits at first.
The books' 22 chapters are divided into five parts. Part One, "Keeping Company with God," explores what prayer is. He points out that Jesus "virtually invented private prayer" (p. 63).
Part Two, "Unraveling the Mysteries," discusses frustrations and questions that people have about the effectiveness of prayer. He gives a disarmingly profound answer to those who ask why we should bother to pray when some prayers seem unanswered: "Why pray? Because Jesus did" (p. 78). Later in the book he gives another simple but true answer: "Why pray? God likes to be asked" (p. 143).
Part Three, "The Language of Prayer," discusses how to pray. He gives great practical advice on handling distractions to prayer, and reminds the reader that there is no right way to pray, because different styles of prayer fit different personalities. "Keep it simple, keep it honest, and keep it up" he advises (p. 191).
Part Four, "Prayer Dilemmas," returns to questions people have about prayer, especially unanswered prayer. I would disagree slightly with his defintion of "unanswered prayer," as he includes in that definition prayers that receive a "no" answer. Yancey's approach to prayer for physical healing is balanced and insightful, as he reveals scientific research showing healing that cannot be explained, while recognizing the importance of using medicine and how God usually works through natural processes.
Part Five, "The Practice of Prayer," provides motivation for faithful praying.
Yancey's writing includes frequent illustrations from a variety of sources, from popular culture to literature to world history. Being a famous author and editor for Christianity Today, Yancey has received many letters about prayer, and he shares this correspondence throughout the book. One unique quality about this book is that each chapter includes a couple of sidebars written by others, sharing personal experiences in prayer. For example, on p. 224-225 a prostitute whose prayer for deliverence resulted in her miraculous salvation. Although each sidebar story can be read alone, they relate to the chapters where they are inserted.
I disagree with Yancey in chapter 7, when he discusses Abraham's prayer that "changed" God's mind. Yancey does not notice that Genesis 18:33 says that it is God who ended the conversation with Abraham, not Abraham with God, so God did not change His mind.
Also, I believe that Yancey misinterprets Job 21:15 on p. 95. There he says that Job asks "What would we gain by praying to him?" However, the context of the chapter implies that Job quotes the wicked in this passage; Job does not say that he himself questions prayer.
It is remarkable that these were the only two places that I disagreed with Yancey, because he makes bold and strong statements throughout the book. I am sure many people will be offended or disagree with some things he said, just because he asserts so many strong opinions. But this is one of the values of the book: Yancey stimulates you to think deeply about prayer, and challenges your preconceived notions. Yet he does so while remaining fiercely loyal to the Bible's teachings on prayer.
In summary, this book is destined to be a classic book on prayer, useful for group study or personal review and study over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars The Stuff No One Talks About.......2007-09-13

Philip Yancey has an uncanny way of addressing taboo subjects within the world of religion. His candid approach to the subject of prayer is refreshing and void of cliche's intended to manipulate or give a false sense of security. He reveals the true power of prayer, AND more importantly, the misconceptions about prayer. His book will take its reader on a round-trip journey of belief, doubt, and belief again with only one difference: the return of belief will be a more stable and deeply-rooted belief that will not be easily shaken.

4 out of 5 stars What? Only four stars for a Philip Yancey book?.......2007-09-11

"Prayer -- Does it Make Any Differnce?"
For an avid and respectful Philip Yancey fan like myself, it is embarrassing to withold a full five stars. But my one reservation is a very serious one. Would it be fair to describe Yancey's position as "it is good to pray constantly, but don't expect a specific tangible answer to a personal prayer"?

In a book that addresses the question of whether prayer makes any difference it is a serious oversight not to investigate and report on ministries where it demonstatedly does make a differnce, such as the MacNutt's in Jacksonville. These mild-mannered, well educated, and considerate people of integrity do not claim healings that didn't happen, and have kept careful records of their years of experience. Has Yancey seriously studied their ministry with an open mind? Is he willing to sit down to talk with them? Or does he cling to the devastating 19th century nonscriptural doctrine that "miracles are not for today"?

A controlled experiment, published in December 2000, compared the effect of prayer on three groups with the same terminal illness: by trained, hands-on believers (James 5:14,15) by distant intercessors, and a control group is significant.

A test should be patterned after the way God actually heals today rather than one that tells God what he must do to convince us.

A book on Prayer certainly is should include exploring the effect of praying the kind of healing taught by Jesus and practiced by his disciples. See where it is working, not where we've failed.

Respectfully sharing. RHP

3 out of 5 stars Talks too Fast.......2007-09-09

I bought Mr. Yancey's hard copy book "Prayer" and I realized that it was a spectacular book with so much information that it was going to be hard to retain a lot of it. When this happens and I really want to learn from a book, I will purchase the book on tape to be able to listen to it and absorb the information. That was my goal with purchasing the audio version of this book. My criticism is this: The gentleman narrating talks far too fast. I'm from a large urban city and have been told that I can talk rather fast -- and I'm saying this guy talks too fast! Perhaps it wouldn't annoy anyone else -- I am trying to absorb information from this book and a more thoughtful slow read would have been beneficial to me. Perhaps it won't be an issue with anyone else. And I have absolutely no complaints about the content as the book is excellent. Just know that the audioversion moves along at quite a brisk clip!

I think she is a very caring and understanding person and this book gives me daily readings to keep up my spirits and know that I am not alone and I can fix my own problems. I wasn't expecting a daily devotional type of book, but I am so glad now that I have it. They say one day at a time.. and right now that's what I'm giving.

Book Description

Immaculee Ilibagiza grew up in a country she loved, surrounded by a family she cherished. But in 1994 her idyllic world was ripped apart as Rwanda descended into a bloody genocide. Immaculee’s family was brutally murdered during a killing spree that lasted three months and claimed the lives of nearly a million Rwandans.
Incredibly, Immaculee survived the slaughter. For 91 days, she and seven other women huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor while hundreds of machete-wielding killers hunted for them.
It was during those endless hours of unspeakable terror that Immaculee discovered the power of prayer, eventually shedding her fear of death and forging a profound and lasting relationship with God. She emerged from her bathroom hideout having discovered the meaning of truly unconditional love—a love so strong she was able seek out and forgive her family’s killers.
The triumphant story of this remarkable young woman’s journey through the darkness of genocide will inspire anyone whose life has been touched by fear, suffering, and loss.
This is Immaculee’s first book.

5 out of 5 stars A Life Giving Antidote to Self Pity and Unforgiveness.......2007-10-04

This book deeply touched my heart. I found it was too difficult to read before bed but I had a hard time putting it down as well. Immaculee's story is one of true character and forgiveness that is more than just words. It truly challenged me to let go of unforgiveness. Nothing that was ever done to me....and I thought I had been deeply hurt...can compare to what she has had to forgive. This story is a light that shines the way on the difficult path of letting go of hurts, a path to which we have all been called by God. Immaculee tells of how this is, however, a path where Jesus leads and sustains and that ultimately ends in a freedom we could never have imagined.

3 out of 5 stars Left to Tell Left Me Wanting.......2007-10-04

Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust was written by Immaculee Ilibagiza, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide. The story stands as an amazing testimony to the power of prayer and the importance of faith in prayer, but I wonder, how does all the God talk strike a non-Christian? Does it resonate with truth, with an A-ha! that changes a life, or does it exist as a concept without relevance?

The fact that the book is on the New York Times bestseller list says something, but what is it? Does the message of surrendering to Christ get glossed over by the same voyeuristic appeal that drives American culture to support Ultimate Fighting?

As a Christian, the way God moved in Imaculee's life is breathtaking and clear. It's without question. It inspires a hearty "Yes God. Bless you! You are faithful!" It stirs the soul, paints the picture of God's purpose in this world and shows where God was during the slaughter.

But despite that, the book didn't grip my soul. I enjoyed reading it, but it didn't possess me to the point of being unable to put it down. Living in a bathroom with seven other women for three months should be more than a statement of fact; I should live the emotional struggle between fear and faith, between death and life, with Immaculee. Instead, I experienced a foregone conclusion.

It's easy to say forgive your neighbor, but when that neighbor murdered your mother, butchered your brother and looted your home the magnitude of the act is incomprehensible. And the telling of that tale should have stirred more in me.

Left to Tell gets bogged down in details, of walking us through a holocaust timeline as lived by the author, and it's a journey without feeling. But that may just be my problem.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-10-03

Imaculee, If I could only meet you! This is a potentially life changing book. There is some shocking material but it is extrememly worth reading and will change you if you let it.

5 out of 5 stars Left to Tell.......2007-10-03

Those of you who have struggled either to find a personal relationship with God, or to forgive those who have caused you harm, this book is for you. Those of you who have wondered what it's like to experience a holocaust from the inside, read this book. Immaculee has the riviting power of Elie Wiesel himself to convey the horrors of genocide, and to expose its demonic nature.

5 out of 5 stars Suspense and God's Providence WON!!.......2007-10-01

Immaculee in her own words presents a chilling account of the brutality and that was happening in a small country in Africa and how with persevence , prayer and trust in God , shows the world that to survive WE must all not forget the Creator!!

5 out of 5 stars Prayer without guilt.......2007-08-15

I know the title might not sound that juicy. Prayer is not that exciting. Wrong! Read this book if you want to wash away all the garbage you believe about not praying good enough or correctly. Joyce encourages us to identify the originator of all those thoughts and he lives down below. An encouragment to read.

5 out of 5 stars Power of Prayer a keeper.......2007-08-07

I am a huge Joyce Meyer fan. This is one of her best efforts. Practical and scripture based- with her signature humor thrown in for easy reading.

5 out of 5 stars Just as the title says: SIMPLE PRAYER!.......2007-07-25

I've been on a quest to spend more time in fellowship with God throughout the day, and have my prayers be more meaningful and less child-like (i.e. "Why God???" or "Gimmie, gimmie please!!"). This book has pointed me in the right direction. Joyce talks about how prayer is not only when you're down on your knees, crying out to God; but it's also simple, heartfelt, one-on-one CONVERSATION with God. And prayer doesn't have to be just one set time each day, but God wants us to talk to Him throughout our day. Joyce also explains how each individual is to be led by the Holy Spirit about whom and what to pray for, and we don't have to feel condemned or guilt if we don't pray about everything under the sun. The Holy Spirit will also lead us in how to pray for ourselves, so that we are not focusing mostly on things; but rather, our prayers will primarily focus on praising and worshiping God for who He is and what He's done for us, and on our becoming more like Him and living according to His will for our lives. I think it's a great book for all Christians, regardless of where you are in your walk with the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars Very Insightful!!.......2007-07-12

I was sensing God wanted me to learn more about prayer so I prayed He lead me to the information He wanted me to read. Shortly after this some friends gave my wife and me this book for an anniversary gift. I must say, it was GREAT!!! I've never been taught to read outside of dinner grace and bedtime prayers. I knew prayer needed to be personal and this book helped me to apply the things need for personal prayer and the things in my life that could hinder my prayer. I would recommend it to anyone who is starting out and wanting to step deeper than the "Now I lay me, down to sleep" and "Come Lord Jesus, be our guest" type prayers.

BTW-Interestingly enough, my pastor started a summer series teaching about prayer. God came through for me again.

5 out of 5 stars "Simple" +"Prayer" = "Breakthrough".......2007-06-14

For the longest time, I've struggled with prayer.
Then I got hold of this book

I thought I had to assume the position (on my knees, eyes closed)
I found standing at the bus stop, leaning over the copier or my child's bathtime works fine

I thought I needed eloquent, prayer-worthy verses to be heard
I found my everyday words get the message across to my Father

I thought I needed to finetune my pitch before knocking on the Boss's door
I found Someone who listens to everything I say- what I whine about, sob over- without judgement

I thought that I needed to schedule a set block of time
I found 5 second prayers work but I still to schedule a prayer date with my Friend- that works

I thought I repeat my personal requests over and over in case the first never made it passed my ceiling
I found I'm heard the first time and now I can spend the extra time praying for others who need it more than I

I'm only a few chapters into the book
... excited about what else I'll learn about my Friend

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great food for thought.......2007-10-03

Actually I would give this 4 1/2 stars because this book is written so assertively it may be a turn-off for those who would be receptive to exploring its ideas.

Think of "Power Vs. Force" as an intellectual version of "The Secret," in that it includes scientific discussion and heavy-hitting authorities to posit similar ideas.

No matter what your opinion, this book deserves great credit for putting some extremely interesting ideas out there for discussion and debate. The cover of the book looks like you would have to be an Ivy-League professor to crack it open, but this book would actually be a great book club selection because it would open the door for a fantastic discussion.

A fun and interesting book to read, even if you don't agree. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly important read..........2007-09-15

This book is wonderful. It's a must read for anyone in the alternative healing arts. I'm a physicist and this book answers so many of the skeptics arguements about our connection to the universe and does so in a very grounded way. Should be required reading for all thinking persons...

5 out of 5 stars Powerful! (Not forceful!).......2007-08-29

I'll be honest with you. Some of the finer points in this book are over my head. But I do understand that when we come from a place of love, joy, peace, and acceptance, we have much power to manifest our desires than we do when we come from a place of fear, greed, pride, etc. In fact, the way I see it, love (and its associated states of being) are our only TRUE power -- a power that can manifest miracles -- and everything else we experience in life is just a matter of "force," and the consequences of force. I was first introduced to this idea in a book called Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide For Living Life In The Divine Flow. Power vs. Force really expands on this idea, though, and I think it's an important book for all to read.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Consciousness.......2007-08-28

This book provides powerful and important insight into the evolution of consciousness. Anyone interested in the likely course of human development should read it closely.

5 out of 5 stars how to help save the planet... read this book..........2007-08-10

This is probably one of the most powerful modern-day books in print. Everyone should read this. It explains how we can all tell who's lying and who's telling the truth very simply, in a matter of seconds. This would put an end to lawyers, judges, police, etc. Most of us have no clue how powerful we are. One very important point he makes is about kids and their addictions to rap and hard rock music. These types of music contain subliminal messages, can cause future health problems, and may actually be the reason behind a ssenseless crime committed by your child later on. Sound familiar? You know, that nice, quiet kid? All your food and water can be tested, too, to see whether you should eat that Big Mac, which I'm sure would score near the bottom of the scale... Please read this book and pass it around!

Book Description

The practice of meditation takes us on a fabulous journey into the gap between our thoughts, where all the advantages of a more peaceful, stress-free, healthy, and fatigue-free life are available, but which are simply side benefits. The paramount reason for daily meditation is to get into the gap between our thoughts, and make conscious contact with the creative energy of life itself. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer explains the soul-nourishing meditation technique for making conscious contact with God, which the ancient masters have told us about.

You have the potential to be an instrument of the highest good for all concerned and to be a literal miracle worker in your own life. No person, government, or religion can legitimately claim to do this for you. “In fact,” says Dr. Dyer, “I agree with Carl Jung who said, ‘One of the main functions of formalized religion is to protect people against a direct experience of God.’” When you master getting into the gap and staying there for prolonged segments of meditation, and experience what you bring back to the material world, you will know your answer to the question: “Why meditate?”

Book Description

Thomas Merton was the most popular proponent of the Christian contemplative tradition in the twentieth century. Now, for the first time, some of his most lyrical and prayerful writings have been arranged into A Book of Hours, a rich resource for daily prayer and contemplation that imitates the increasingly popular ancient monastic practice of "praying the hours". Editor Kathleen Deignan mined Merton's voluminous writings, arranging prayers for Dawn, Day, Dusk, and Dark for each of the days of the week. A Book of Hours allows for a slice of monastic contemplation in the midst of hectic modern life, with psalms, prayers, readings, and reflections.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for Merton Lovers.......2007-09-14

This is a marvelous collection of writings from the works of Thomas Merton, the Trappist Monk, assembled in the form of a book of hours. Even if you are not particularly knowledgable about Merton's writings, you will find his comments on so many aspects of the spiritual life meaningful and tantalizing, you will want to study his works further. The author does include an index that gives the source of each selection included for the particular time and day of the week. Although he lived from 1915 - 1968, you will feel he is writing for right now. Included are writings for Dawn, Day, Dusk and Dark on each day of the week. You might think that only seven days would not be enough to keep you interested. But, as with much of Holy Scripture, something new and fresh appears with repetition. The author includes an informed introduction to her selections for Thomas Merton: A Book of Hours.

5 out of 5 stars Pray Thomas Merton!.......2007-09-12

A fantastic Book of Hours from the writings of Thomas Merton, which includes passages from his poetry and other writings not encountered by those who have read his journals or his most popular books. This was a new side of Merton for me, and I found it to be wonderful. The prayers and readings in this book reflect new areas of encounter with God that I had not experienced in his writing before. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Awsome book of prayers.......2007-08-12

Several friends have received this book and were recommending others to get a copy, so I purchased one, took it on retreat and another person has also purchased one as well. word of mouth, on this book.

5 out of 5 stars Meditation and Prayer.......2007-06-13

Many of us get so busy each day that when we try to pray or meditate, the world crowds in on us. This book is simply a guide to meditation and prayer and has been a Godsend to me.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for a Great Practice.......2007-06-09

Merton's book is a though-and-Spririt-provoking guide for a week of prayers and meditations on the daily hours - dawn, day, dusk, dark. I especially appreciated the thoughtful and helpful Introduction, orienting the the reader to Mertin and the practice of praying the stations. Sad to say, this is a practice that has largely left the protestant world -- to our diminishment, I believe.

I recommend the practice and this book as an inspiring guide to developing a richer prayer life and a closer relationship with God.

Book Description

A devastating fire wakes up the Yadas to a new reality: God is on the move.

What I'd like to know is, why does God keep rearranging my comfort zone? It could have something to do with my Yada Yada prayer sisters, who aren't afraid to get in each other's faces and tend to expect big things from God.

But to move forward, sometimes we have to let go of what's behind. In spite of the loss of two dear friends. In spite of the breakup of a teenage love. In spite of the curse of HIV. In spite of prison time hanging over the head of a beloved child. In spite of fire consuming the hopes of those who have nothing.

Yet out of the ashes, God is doing a new thing! It's time for the Yadas to press on, pray on, and get rolling!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-09-29

I really enjoyed this book as with the previous. I find myself relating to Jodi even though I am a african american woman. This books makes you laugh, cry tears of joy and most of all, makes me want to do better spiritually. I enjoyed reading about the new additions to the Yada Yada's. I am really looking forward to the next addition. I can't wait to read about Josh and Edesa.........I feel this series is a must read for christian women. You can find one of the members to relate to. Neta Jackson is an excellent story teller. BRAVO................

5 out of 5 stars great read!.......2007-09-24

I have read all of the Yada Yada books and this one wasn't a disappointment. I can't wait for the next one. It is refreshing to read a book that is not "churchy" and shows real life and sins that each of us make every day and different ways to deal with them.

5 out of 5 stars They just keep getting better.......2007-09-22

I have so enjoyed reading this series of books. I love the characters and relate so much to Jodi. I think I felt this book more than the rest of the series, but it may be because I've gotten so attached to all of the characters. I'll be sad to see them go with the next and final book.

5 out of 5 stars Yada Yada's continue to entertain and inspire.......2007-08-26

If you have enjoyed this series as much as I have, than Yada Yada Gets Rolling will allow you to fall a little more in love with the characters of this series. I laughed, welled up, and was challenged once more by the circumstances that these ladies are brought into by God. The way they bond together, pray together, and challenge one another inspires me to be a better friend.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!.......2007-08-18

I have just finished this book, and have loved it as much as the past five. I too really enjoy the truthfulness of Mrs Jackson's books, they are real life things that happen to all of us trying to live a Christian life, in a very secular world. I really love how real Jodie Baxter's life is, and how much I see myself in her character. We ALL struggle with the world reactions, and trying to be Christ like in how we should respond to lifes atttacks, which are really the enemy trying to keep us in our old worldy thought patterns. I pray many more real life prayer groups keep popping up thanks to these books. Thank you for keeping them coming Mrs. Jackson:)
You will enjoy these books, once you start, you can't stop reading.........

Book Description

This collection of the timeless teachings of one of the greatest sages of India, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, regarded by many as a "modern spiritual classic" is a testament to the uniqueness of the seer's life and work

"I Am That" preserves Maharaj's dialogues with the followers who came from around the world seeking his guidance in destroying false identities. The sage's sole concern was with human suffering and the ending of suffering. It was his mission to guide the individual to an understanding of his true nature and the timelessness of being. He taught that mind must recognize and penetrate its own state of being, "being this or that, here or that, then or now," but just timeless being.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wisdom Beyond Expression.......2007-09-01

This book can only be described in the format of the writing. The interviewer gets annoying due to his unnecessary struggle with the universe of philosophical and existential crisis. However; the words of Maharaj exhibit a sort of brilliance, a sort of light, that CANNOT be put into terms of a book-review. Buy this book not to read every sentence from start to finish, but to expose yourself directly (on any page) to the light of the mind of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

5 out of 5 stars Incites Spiritual Depth in the Reader.......2007-08-30

A well done summary of Sri N.M.'s advice to seekers. It doesn't take long to catch the simple principles that lead to greater insights into the divine self. While the documented dialog does get repetitive after a point it still compels the reader to further introspection and engagement. Highly recommended for the serious seeker.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite .......2007-08-23

My favorite book in the world. I've read it 4 times and I imagine I'll read it another 10 times! It was recommended by a friend, and it was his favorite book, too. He had read it 3 or 4 times when he loaned it to me very reluctantly. So I definitely had to purchase my own copy.

5 out of 5 stars THE MOST LUCID BOOK ON THE SUBJECT--GET IT!!!.......2007-07-14

I had come across this book many times over the years, and had thought that Nisargaadatta looked like a "wild-eyed crazy person." This scared me away from reading his book, until about a year ago. I had been completely wrong about him, and judged him only by his looks. I had also thought that the black and yellow cover of the book was so bold and intense that it seemed really "fringe," but I was also wrong about that. My mistake! I judged a book by its cover, thinking that Nisargadatta was out to convert people into a cult, or something like that. That's a bunch of NONSENSE. It's bold and intense because the publishers know that the book is dead-on about the truth and are not afraid to announce it, not because Nisargadatta is trying to blind you with a bunch of pseudo-spiritual crap.

So, one day I became curious about the book, and read some sections on Amazon. I was amazed at the quality of the communication! No riddles, no bullsh-t, no vague leading-on of the reader, no mindgames. It was as clear as a pure diamond, and incredibly INTERESTING.

I am so glad that I finally got over my prejudices and read this book. Before and after I read this book, I'd read works by Ramana Maharshi, Vivekananda, Ramakrishna, Sailor Bob Adamson, John Wheeler, Leo Hartong, and many others, but this one is THE MOST LUCID BOOK ON THE SUBJECT, period.

Unlike some Advaitan authors, like Gangaji, for example, Nisargadatta DOES NOT PLAY "HIDE THE BALL" with you. Gangaji hides the ball behind opaque, riddle-like nonsense and she makes money off of it, too. I've seen Gangaji speak in person, on videos, heard her on audio, and read some of her writings, and while many like her, I think that she's leading people down a path of needless confusion and makes people worse-off by leading them astray through a maze of irrelevancies and BABBLE. Clearly thinking herself ABOVE the masses--although she claims to be an Advaitin, which is purely contradictory!--she'll just look her stage guests in the eye and start in on her "knowing" laughter, or smile at them silently. Whatever. There's no mojo flowing from her during her "Satsang," just a bunch of devotees plopping down $20 to hear her prattle on in circles as she leads them into a paralyzing maze of verbiage. It's totally annoying. Her delivery is so baffling and time-wasting that few people in the audience even knew what the hell she was getting at. I felt like standing up and shouting: "Look, people, what she's trying to say is that YOU ARE GOD, DUH!!!" She's completely cryptic and self-obsessed, and of course being obsessed with your own ego is the OPPOSITE of Advaita.

Many "teachers," like her, mean well. Yes. But if they can't communicate, they should go home and leave people alone before they do any more damage. They may have understanding inside of them, but if they can't inspire understanding in others, they have NO BUSINESS acting like they're "teachers."

Nisargadatta, on the other hand, doesn't f-ck around with his audience in order to make himself seem larger than life, or in order to make a buck. He was poor his whole life, but still communicated the message with vastly more clarity and directness than any white-robe-clad goon with a fat bank account and a penchant for acting like The Riddler.

Even writers like John Wheeler just repeat their vague assertions thousands of times in a row with no new content delivered. Nisargadatta, on the other hand, has an astounding knack for communicating LUCIDLY with the reader. His questioners aren't "nice and polite" like Gangaji's are. No, they ask him tough questions and sometimes argue with him, and he answers their questions dead-on. They don't worship him and treat every word he says like it's true, even if they don't understand it. No, they challenge him, and the reader is better off for it.

He's down-to-earth, he's incredibly insightful, and the book will change your life!

I also heartily recommend Leo Hartong and Ramana Maharshi...

5 out of 5 stars Get this book!.......2007-07-08

Putting it plain and simple, the spiritual search was almost a hobby. I read Buddhism and other "Eastern" philosophical and religious texts for many, many years. I never really understood. Reading this book changed everything.

This book sparked a small flame that ended up engulfing the person I took myself to be. The raging inferno consumed the mind, thoughts, concepts, everything I believed, everything I left unexamined... it left the "ME" in ashes...

As Stephen Wolinsky puts it, Nisargadatta's words are like a virus... once you are infected it spreads and leaves no trace of the life story you once held so dear.

This book is a living expression of your True Self, the true Guru - if you only get one book, this is the one. But in reality, you don't need any books to discover what you really are. Nisargadatta said that Spirituality was as discardable as dishwater. You already are what you are seeking. You just have to answer one question - who is it that is seeking?

This book is so touching. A friend gave me a copy and I loved it so much I ordered 7 more to give as Christmas gifts. I've read one or two letters every night before going to sleep. These letters are written as if God is writing to each woman personally, father to daughter. Each letter is based on a Bible verse that is included. The letters are so loving and personal. I will read this book over and over.

I so recommend this to every woman - I have hundreds and hundreds of books, and I think this is one I will buy for all my friends. There is only one "drawback" - it is so beautiful, so lovely that I don't want to underline or highlight the book. This makes a gorgeous gift!
