"What we know about angels," writes Rosemary Ellen Guiley, writer and lecturer on spirituality and human potential, "comes through our otherworldly contact with them." To bolster her claim, Guiley includes stories of some well-known recipients of angel charms--Dorothy McLean, founder of Findhorn; psychoanalyst Carl Jung; poet and visionary William Blake; and American pilot Charles Lindbergh--in this compendious volume.
Some might think of angels as our human pathway to the monotheistic God of our Western culture--a God who remains abstract and remote. All major cultures and religions, however, have intricately developed angel systems. Guiley covers all--comparing angels to analogous beings in non-western cultures in order to trace their evolution. The book is arranged alphabetically by topic, so readers can look up subjects such as angel hierarchy, individual angels, Judaic angelology, the supernatural manifestations of the Virgin Mary, and even--God forbid--sex with demons.
The Encyclopedia of Angels is thoroughly researched and pleasantly illustrated with photographs of sculpture and reproductions of some of the great medieval, Renaissance, and contemporary works of "angel" art. Believers and skeptics alike will treasure this encyclopedia of information on a luminous and mysterious subject!

Very useful when reading other works on Angels of Light and on Fallen Angels. I have found everything I have needed so far. Thank you.

Encyclopedia of Angels.......2007-05-09
I haven't had a chance to really go through the book as of yet, but what little I did seemed interesting.
A thoroughly researched and valuable resource.......2007-02-13
I must start off by saying that normally I find books of this nature to be quite disappointing. Normally, they offer only a brief description of a limited number of topics and I soon find myself looking elsewhere for research material. This was not the case with Rosemary Ellen Guiley's book and I was pleasantly surprised. Guiley has provided a very thorough (not to mention useful) tome that covers a multitude of entries regarding angels and similar spirits. Additionally, she covers many other resources, such as films and books, that deal with the subject matter of angels (as well as spirits and angel-like beings). I consider this particular aspect useful because it provides "jumping points" for readers to locate other sources of material or ideas. Most importantly, the revised second edition of this book provides a wealth of information related to apocryphal texts such as 1 Enoch and the story of the Watchers and the Nephilim -- topics that I have found extremely interesting and thought-provoking. While conducting the research for my own book, I often found myself referring back to Guiley's work for more information or to look up references to other texts. It was truly indispensable and probably the best book that I can recommend not only as a general reference for readers interested in angels, but for anyone conducting more scholarly research as well.
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Angels - But Were Afraid to Ask.......2006-02-23
When I ordered this item, I didn't quite know what to expect - but I was absolutely blown away by this book. Of all the books on angels I've ever read, it's the most comprehensive, the most objective, and the most beautiful. The author covers just about anything and everything that has come from any tradition that embraces them, and the book is copiously illustrated with appropriate paintings, manuscript illuminations, statues, and any other form of visual depiction of these intriguing but elusive beings. I strongly recommend this book not only for angel enthusiasts, but for serious scholars as well.

Excellent !!.......2007-02-12
This book is a gift from Heaven to Humankind, a piece of Heaven here on Earth. I widely recommend it to anybody interested in Angels, spiritual development and Earth Ascension.
The truth Finally!!!.......2007-01-11
I agree totally with how the author describes the angels and archangels I've seen similar things as well as a friend of mine who is more psychic whom I use to check if what I've seen is right. And I am very relieved that Aryella Jupiter has seen the same things. It may be shocking for some readers as it has been for some of my friends when I tried to tell them how it really is. Most of them refused totally to believe it. One of my friends who is gay told me he thought Archangel Michael must have a perfect body with perfect stomach muscles and looking like a body builder and when I told him he is actually round in the stomach and he is rather fat he was totally disappointed and he thought I was telling him nonsense. As for the paintings that portray (from other painter's) them they are not totally true it's like people who reach 60 year's of age and show on the internet photo's of them when they were 20. Thank you Aryella I hope you write another book on angels with mote information.
Visions of Angels.......2006-02-23
This book is intriguing, as it is based on the author's visions of angels and communications from them which she received through clairvoyance and clairaudience. Aryella Jupiter writes extensively about each individual angel, and in most cases also draws pictures of them. She also claims that some of the angels and archangels provided her with information and actually supervised the compilation of the book. Now I'm not doubting the author's visions, as I have experienced such myself, and have had angelic experiences. Because of those experiences, however, I tend to wonder why so many of her observations don't mesh with the traditions about angels. For example, she assigns each angel a gender - and I always thought that angels were sexless, though they can assume the form of whatever gender they want. Again, I'm not saying she's wrong. I don't know! However, I would have liked to know how she drew some of the conclusions about them she did. Nonetheless, this book is fascinating, and definitely worth reading.
THIS BOOK IS A BLESSING FROM GOD!.......2005-02-10
I have read lots of books about Angels and THE GREAT ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ANGELS is, by far, the most accurate and complete reference about angels in our world. Not only it answered all of my questions but also gave me much more information that I could ever have asked for.
I can tell you, there are lots of great works out there that compile information from different old sources but they are very confusing. Different sources says different things about the same angel, the same feat is assigned to different angels, one source points one angel as of light while other source points the same angel as fallen, etc. This encyclopedia clarifies those confusions and shed light on questions that were a mystery for ages.
The book has valuable in-depth information, available for the very first time. Also hundreds of angel names with complete profiles of most of them. Each profile has things such as:
-The clairvoyant physical description of the angel.
-Description on each angel feats and history (with clarifications of the centuries-old misinterpretations).
-The angel's date of birth and age (calculated according with our solar calendar).
-The different names the same angel was called by different cultures and in different periods.
-Correct hierarchic ranks.
-The hosts and number of legions of high-ranked angels.
-His/her patronage.
-Authentic descriptions and pictures of the angel¡¦s family seal.
-Gorgeous portraits depicted from visions and apparitions.
All the elements mentioned above make this book unique, but the portraits deserve special consideration. They were portrayed by the author from clairvoyant visions and apparitions, so they contain the exact likeness of each angel. When I looked at each one of them and realized that I had in front of me the real image of an Angel, I was filled up with inspiration and enlightenment. If I ever see one of those Angels appear in front of me, I will be able to recognize him/her!
Up to this point, you will feel amazed, but there is a breathtaking surprise at the Appendix, waiting to be discovered: Samples of psychowritten scrolls with the Angel's own handwriting. That is very exciting!
This book brings so much Light and awareness, that, just to open it, will make you feel much closer and connected to Heaven, and I dare to affirm that it is not only a feeling but a reality.
I widely recommend it. It is a book that I already keep as one of my most precious treasures.

Lots of information, but where are the illustrations?.......2002-09-19
Call me crazy, but a few pictures would have made a world of difference in this book. That's the ONLY complaint I have about this easy to read, easy to carry, easy to love book on angel errata.
My boyfriend knows about my freakish obsession with angels, and suggested I buy this. He was actually right for once! I found that this book has tons of information, summarized neatly and cross referenced with different spellings of names (in case you're hung up on one in particular). I liked that the author bolded certain important passages, so you knew just what to look for when skimming.
I also liked that the author included next to the names of the angels the meaning of their names (as in Naamah means 'pleasurable').
The appendix and bibliography actually have a ton of information in there as well (just in case you weren't looking!). Cross referenced are all the mentions of angels from the Bible, Koran, and other religious works, as well as a listing of Renaissance paintings dealing with angels.
Well worth the money.
A Wonderful Guide to the World of Angels.......2000-09-27
Both informative and readable, this book is a wonderful guide to the world of angels. It covers the topic from all angels and viewpoints, and is superbly cross-referenced. Great Book!
A "Dictionary" instead of a good informative book........2000-09-15
I bought this book thinking of it as an informative one. It is a "dictioanary" not an encyclopedia, because the author doesn't explain too much about each angel. It contains a lot of angels including the fallen ones. I found information on this book very different from the information on other books of angels. That's why i am giving it this rate!!!!
A comprehensive and valuable reference work........1998-11-05
This is a comprehensive reference tool for the study of angels and their missions. It is a valuable companion for seminary students, ministers, and writers interested in the subject of angels and wanting to learn more about them. A valuable addition to everyone's library.
A companion for all other angel books and an excellent read!.......1998-04-14
What a great companion to all your other angel books. This encylcopedia is well-researched, easy to read and comprehend. It will assist you while trying to understand all the other angel books out there. And it's a great read on its own!

It is easy to lose yourself in this book for hours...........2003-03-13
I found this to be the most comprehensive book on the subject of angels and related topics that I have ever seen. Whether you are approaching this subject from a biblical, historical, cross cultural, or esoteric viewpoint you should find most everything that you are looking for. Indeed, you will find much that you were not originally looking for. It is easy to find yourself absorbed for hours reading from subject to subject, seeing associations and connections that never occured to you before. I couldn't really see where the author was promoting any particular agenda or viewpoint- it all seemed pretty objective to me. Yet, the writing isn't in dry-as-dust academic style either.
The book itself is hefty 485 plus pages and laid out in dictionary form (though there is a well written introduction on the overall subject.) The illustrations are in black and white, but they are well-chosen, crisp, and plentiful.
Useless.......2001-12-09
The book seems well-organized but the entries are incomplete. It is not difficult to find some well-known angels are not listed in this book.
Looking for a dictionary of angels? Look elsewhere.
Not Quite A to Z.......2001-06-23
This book is good but I find another book "A Dictionary of Angels : Including the Fallen Angels" by Gustav Davidson much better and complete.
Incomplete.......2001-06-20
The angel of air (Chasan or some books spell as "Chassan") is not listed in this book. This angel is mentioned in some books on evocation of angels.
I do not think that this book is good enough to be called an encyclopedia on angels. Perhaps just the name "Encyclopedia" to make it sell better??
Wonderful Angel resource.......1998-06-20
Both informative and readable, this book is a wonderful guide to the world of angels. It covers the topic from all angles and viewpoints, and is superbly cross-referenced. Great book!

Good coverage of angelic names but poor references........2007-07-23
This title is very thorough in expounding upon the different names of both angels and demons. However, it has a major flaw in that it relies heavily on fictional accounts, such as Milton, to collaborate its data. Therefore, I cannot recommend it for serious study. Additionally, following the tradition of most dictionaries, the descriptions are rather terse.
For mere entertainment it is adequate, but that's all.
Angel refenerce.......2007-05-20
Has probably most of the angels known to man throughout history and from all cultures and beliefs. Some more information about some of the main ones would have been helpful. A good reference if you are into angels.
A Hefty Appetizer For The Budding Theologian.......2007-04-30
If you're like me and are curious about the oddities of religion this book delivers plenty for the price. It is very expansive, especially in the eyes of a theological novice. But while others who have more experience may know its limitations, for me the book is a joy! I've become more acquainted (than I had previously thought possible) with the mysterious beings that dwell in the background of most religions. I found myself not only checking the familiar names but being drawn almost immediately to the lesser known beings. One of my favorites is Nisroc: An Assyrian god, then a ruling angel in Milton's Paradise Lost, and finally the chief of cuisine of Hell! There are many cases of deities changing to angels, angels to deities, and both into devils. All of this and full page page illustrations from old masters like of Durer, Blake, and Dore. It really doesn't matter if you're a skeptic, scholar, beginning theologian, or occultist - I would recommend this wonderfully easy-to-use work to any of these! Bravo Mr. Davidson!
Highly Detailed Reference Book.......2007-03-23
I first discovered, Dictionary of Angels when I owned a small angel emporium. This is an actual dictionary with incredibly detailed descriptions of every angel imaginable. It is also an incredible book to read and learn about the angels throughout history. I still go to this book as a reference when I write about the angels, have questions about which angel is in charge of what ever I am curious about. Great book. I usually do not leave reviews unless the book is really moving or has some above standard substance. This is no exception. This book is top shelf in my library, and that's high praise! Blessings in the Mire
If you don't have it, get it.......2007-03-20
When I first became interested in fallen angels I had a hard time finding information about them, especially online where a lot of information was on badly-designed black background/red text sites or part of a game verse.
The Dictionary of Angels is the most helpful at-a-glance angel books I've ever come across - most of what armchair demonoligists or hobbyists could want to know is contained within its pages. It doesn't have everything, but it's an excellent place for anyone to start their research. Highly recommend.

Very Interesting Book!!!.......2007-06-01
A friend of mine gave me this book, and normally I don't read. However, on a road trip, I decided to read some of the book and became very interested, QUICKLY! The book is quite detailed, and I liked the fact that there was information in the book on serial killers from the 1800's and earlier (Erzsebet Bathory born in 1560). A great, well-written book!
Updated issue of a fascinating encyclopedia.......2007-01-03
This is a fascinating read for true crime buffs. The author's stated purpose is to "demystify, as far as possible, those predators in human form who have been with us since the dawn of history..." Serial killers at large are so frightening that they end up touching all of our lives--most especially in the United States, where 84% of all known serial killers have committed their crimes since 1980. I first became aware of this type of human predator when I was a student at the University of Michigan, and John Norman Collins was murdering coeds with pierced ears and long brown hair.
California native Michael Newton has published 181 books since 1977, including 147 novels but he is best known for his true crime and reference works. I have to say that I assumed this author was British because of his concise, witty style and also for his tendency to critique other true crime authors who failed to get their facts straight, including the names of a serial killer's victims. One of his special peeves is the term 'spree killer,' and he also doesn't seem to think much of profilers.
Most of the entries in this encyclopedia are concerned with the serial killers themselves, whether they acted alone, in twosomes, or in packs. One of the biggest surprises for me was the large number of serial killers who are or were women. Something like 12% of all serial killers are female, and Hungarian women seem especially prone to this behavior, starting with Countess Erzsebet Bthory in the sixteenth century whose final body count was somewhere between 300 and 650 victims. In the early 1900s,Vera Renczi murdered 35 husbands, lovers, and a son and was arrested by the police only after they searched her basement and discovered 35 zinc coffins. "Some evenings, Vera liked to sit among the coffins in an armchair and enjoy the company of her adoring beaux." Then there were the "Angel Makers of Nagyrev"...
Well, let me just close by remarking that "The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers" is an extremely interesting source of information on the darker side of human nature. In addition to the encyclopedia entries, there are also appendices on "Solo Killers," "Team Killers," and "Unresolved Cases," plus an extensive bibliography.
Update of a fine reference.......2006-11-20
Expanded and updated edition of his original that came out in 2000. There are now entries on cases that have been solved since the first edition was released. Examples: Gary Leon Ridgway, the Green River Killer and Dennis Rader, the BTK Strangler. Other cases have been expanded. Some that were only listed in the appendixes now have entries in the main section.
The author uses the definition of a serial killer as someone who murders 2 or more persons, done as separate events. This leads to inclusion of some killers that most people would not consider serial killers. I understand the author going for a more inclusive approach than otherwise. If he didn't go this route, there would inevitably be complaints about killers left out.
I spotted very few errors and none that I would categorize as major.
I would like to see a much more comprehensive index. Trying to find an entry if all you remember is a victim name or an odd location is difficult.
The entries range from a few paragraphs to several pages. Still, if you want a detailed read on a specific case, you will need to get a book devoted to that killer. There are entries on some killers that there hasn't been a book written about, such as Melvin Rees.
Of the three SK Encyclopedias I've read, this is the best, in my opinion.
The reviews for the first edition are still mostly applicable here. I recommend reading them for other viewpoints.
