Book Description
Retaining all the beloved qualities of Huston Smith's classic The Religions of Man and the current fully revised and updated The World's Religions, this stunning pictorial presentation refines the text to its wonderful essentials. In detailed, absorbing, richly illustrated, and highly readable chapters on Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Islam, Judaism, Christianity and primal religions, we find refreshing and fascinating presentations of both the differences and the similarities among the worldwide religious traditions. The approach is at once classic and contemporary, retaining all the empathy, eloquence and erudition that millions of readers love about the earlier editions, while being edited and designed for a contemporary general readership. This delightful marriage of winsome text and remarkable pictures vividly brings to life the scope and vision of Huston Smith's expertise and insight.

A Beautiful Book!.......2007-10-06
This is an excellent overview of the world's major religions, well researched and clearly written so that even a novice can understand. Lush photographs, color and black & white, appear on almost every page, illustrating interesting and unique specifics of each religion - i.e., gods, body decorations, services, icons, etc. Very satisfied with this purchase!
Excellent.......2007-09-11
This book was exactly what we ordered and came in a timely manner. It was also in excellent condition.
Anyone wishing to be enlightened spiritually or culturally is in for a treat........2007-08-01
This book is a must have! Smith beautifully illustrates religions from around the globe in a respectable manner that is easily understandable to all. Anyone wishing to be enlightened spiritually or culturally is in for a treat.
An interesting introduction to the living mainstream religions of the World.......2007-07-25
I've had this book since my confirmation, but finally I had the time to read it. I've seen the highly approving quote from Smith about Guenon, so this certainly raised my interest enough to pull it out of my shelf and put it in my "to-read"-pile of books. The book is more or less evenly divided between images, art and text. My edition of the book uses very little annotations, but it didn't really bother me, since there is very little you feel the need to check out in such an introductory book.
The content of the book is quickly summarized; it's a very quick introduction to the various living religions of man, dealing quite objectively with them all, apart from the obvious holy cow of the "West"; Judaism. He appears to my biased eyes to be quite the philosemite; there is just no thing our desert friends haven't contributed to the West. He states somewhere in the book something of the nature that without them we wouldn't have any culture, religion or world-view at all, so I guess we would have to be satisfied with the tiny contributions of Mozart, Wagner, Shakespeare, Hamsun and all the other gentiles of the West.
The book was very interesting, and apart from the minor criticism I've voiced, and the fact that it is of course very shallow and bring relatively little depth (that is though, of course, the point of the book) I highly recommend it as an adequate completely basic introduction to this highly important field. As an additional bonus is all the mentioned religious art and images strewn throughout this short but effective study.
(I read a different edition)

Religions of the World: The Illustrated Guide to Origins, Beliefs, Traditions & Festivals.......2005-08-12
The book contains colorful photos, appears well organized and thoroughly covers the major religions, in an unbiased manner.
Religions of the World.......2000-02-25
It is the most concise material I have found on the subject. While in school I used it for a reference book when writing papers, now I read through it when I am unsure about a religious practice. It clarifies any questions you might have on any given (major) religion.
Gorgeous illustrations, easy to understand text.......2000-01-07
This book is really beautiful! It helps the student and the teacher to explore the great wisdom traditions of the world. The illustrations are plentiful and lovely, the text easy to comprehend. A great book!
Book Description
The timeless message of the New Testament applies to people of every culture and generation. Yet there is great value in understanding the world in which that message was first revealed - its social manners, politics, religious customs, and culture. Exploring the New Testament World, written by classics and Bible scholar Dr. Albert A. Bell, Jr., illuminates the living context of the New Testament, immersing its readers in the intriguing world of Jesus and the early church.
An authority on ancient Greek and Roman language, culture, and history, Dr. Bell writes in a readable style that is accessible and enjoyable to any reader - an uncommon accomplishment among New Testament scholars today. Surveying Jewish factions of the era, the social and political structure of the Roman Empire, and the philosophies and religions that surrounded the early church, Dr. Bell helps his readers learn to think like first-century Jews, Greeks, and Romans, illuminating puzzling New Testament passages for clear understanding. Comprehensive Scripture and Subject Indexes make this volume even more useful as a "manners and customs" Bible companion.
This authoritative guide receives high praise from college professors and Sunday school teachers alike, proving its appeal to both popular and academic audiences. A "must-have" reference for every pastor and an indispensable resource to any Bible reader.

Unless Someone Guides Me.......2007-01-25
Albert Bell sees this book as beginning while he was yet in high school. At some point, he says, he made the connection that the authors he read in his Latin class "lived in the same world as the people who wrote the books I studied on Sunday." Now as an instructor at Hope college in Holland, MI, Bell asks the question of how we can believe something that we simply do not understand. Will we be like the Ethiopian eunuch of Acts 8.26-40 who asked, " How can I (understand) unless someone guides me?"
As an illustration of what he means, Bell says he once heard a minister tell the story of Paul's imprisonment in Rome. In his story, the minister told of clanking chains and a foul-smelling dungeon. But in ancient Rome, the law was that prisons were for holding people for trial and not for punishment. More accurately, Paul as under house arrest. He was chained during moves but even in Rome he was allowed to by himself in his own hired dwelling with a guard.
There are ten major sections to Bell's book ranging from the Judaic background of the NT to Roman law, religion, and philosophy to Greco-Roman society and morality to a section on time, distance, and travel. In the section on Roman Law, Bell covers Pliny the Younger, the powers of Roman governors, and so on. in the section on Greco-Roman religion Bell notes the story of Vespasian's healing of the blind man; such stories succeeded, says Bell, because "the popular mentality of the time accepted such things happening"
I heartily endorse the study of non-canonical writings in order to study the cultural milieu of a text. Time and again Bell guides the reader through the world in which the writers of the New Testament wrote.
First-rate study of New Testament background.......2006-05-31
This is a masterful study of the Graeco-Roman culture of the first century AD which underlies the New Testament. Bell examines a wide variety of topics, from dress to how meals were eaten, from child-rearing to the treatment of slaves, and discusses the dominant philosophical and religious movements of the day. Knowing such things enables a reader of the New Testament to delve more deeply into the meaning of the text and to dig out new levels of understanding.

What Would Jesus Say About a Deceptive Book Cover?.......2007-01-15
I picked this book up on an impulse at the library last night. The book's title and front cover gave me the impression that I had in my lucky little hands an objective, unbiased overview of major world religions. You know what I mean: "Just the facts, ma'am." That sort of thing.
Imagine my surprise, then, when I began flipping through the pages and discovered that Christianity was conspicuously missing from the alphabetical list. I blinked. I checked again. Sure enough, the book jumped straight from Buddhism to Confucianism, giving Jesus the ol' snub. Oh, my goodness! Whatever could be wrong? Could it be that the authors hold Christianity in such low esteem that they decided it wasn't even worth a mention? Could it be that the authors are in fact evil, crazed, Mr. Burns-like fiends who are plotting to destroy Christianity by systematically ignoring it in all of their books?
No--just the opposite, in fact. It turns out that this is a book written by Christians for other Christians. The reason Christianity is not included is that the writers assume you are already a believer and only want to read their book so you can debate with and convert people of other faiths. The book should have been titled, Religions of the World: A Guide for Proselytizing Christians. Instead of going for the "multicultural" look by putting images of a Hindu woman, a Buddha statue, some praying Muslims, and the Ten Commandments tablets on the front cover, they should have showed a Christian trying to convert someone. It's obvious that *somebody* in the production process wanted to be a sneaky little weasel and rope non-Christians into reading the book, too.
I know the Bible is a bit fuzzy on the "honest book marketing" issue, but I have a feeling a certain weasel--or party of weasels--is in serious need of redemption.
I give the book four stars because it's well-organized, visually appealing, and it describes the basic tenets of each religion very clearly. But if you're looking for "objective and unbiased," give it a big fat miss.
World Religions.......2007-01-12
I had read a friend's copy in preparation for a Sunday school class.
I ordered a new copy to give as a Christmas gift.
a christian perspective.......2007-01-10
This book covers some of the more well known religions and some I have never even heard of. It has good tables that contrasts every religion to christianity. It seems written from a christian point of view since each chapter ends with how to relate and find similarities to the other religion to help with your witnessing efforts.
Insightful and Easy to Read Overview.......2006-06-22
I believe the negative reviews below are unfair. As the author states in the Intro: "This book was written primary with the Christian in mind, but not exclusively.. I invite you to consider the arguments.." The book is easy to read, very broad, and clear but very insightful.
It frames the primary issues all religions deal with and shows how Christianity contrasts with other religions. In each case it describes how Christians should present their beliefs to those with other beliefs. The tone is respectful of other religions, but, of course, since the issues are goodness, meaningful lives, just societies, and eternal bliss, it does not paper over the profound differences. I'm so sorry to hear those who preceive differences and the belief that one way is correct as equal to hate. Could science or any other field have advanced with this as the governing assumption?
Horrible hateful book.......2006-06-15
This must be one of the most vicious, hateful, evangelistic books I've ever seen. It is such a threat to world peace and goodwill. Under the guise of a great title "The Illustrated Guide to World Religions," is a manual of how to brainwash non-Christians into rejecting their own religion and to convert them to Christianity. Please don't support such endeavors.

Book Description
The Sacred World of the Celts is a comprehensive and richly illustrated examination of ancient Celtic traditions and their continuity and relevance to the present day.
Celtic language and legend were largely passed down through the monks of Ireland and Wales and consequently were "christianized." In turn, these renditions were subject to the interpretations of various "Celtic" revivalists that further concealed the true nature of the Celtic world. Nigel Pennick pushes back these disfiguring overlays and restores to us the primordial Celtic tradition, one which interweaves the spirit into all aspects of daily life.
Examines all aspects of Celtic life, including myth, the status of women, and the bardic tradition.

Good introduction.......2006-07-20
This book is written by a british author and one who has a passion for all things Celtic. I recently saw him give a lecture at a conference in England and was impressed by the way in which he jumped from one thing to another, linking together and explaining facts by supporting it with cultural, agricultural and other facts from the period. He puts things into perspective.
I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to find a general overview of Celtic mythology, newcomers to Paganism in particular would benefit from reading this, before plunging into books which perpetuate the usual "golden age" nonsense.
All I can say in addition is thank you to the author, Nigel Pennick, for his continued research and work on topics which need more exploration. Excellent work!
Great Intro to the World of the Celts!.......2005-12-09
I bought this book at the last minute while looking for rune books (found one by the same author). The illustrations (something my other Celtic history books do not have) really drew me to this book.
The book itself is basic, but wonderfully done. It is a great intro for those just starting out in Celtic studies - the chapters being quick and to the point, as well as a quick reference for those more learned in Celtic history.
The illustrations and photography are beautiful, and coupled with the descriptions, just took me right into the world of the ancient Celts. I wanted to visit the British Isles before, but now, I'm aching for it!
Very Nice Introduction To the Study of the Celts.......2001-12-06
Anyone wishing to begin an exploration into the history and traditions of the Celts will be delighted with this book. It will not overwhelm, yet it provides tons of information in a beatiful format. The photos are excellant. With Celtic history being as complex as it is, the book presents it in a way that is easily understandable.
The Sacred World of the Celts....Very Informative!.......2001-10-10
This book had more information than I expected. From the origins of the Celts to the more "modern" aspects of Celtic society. This book covers geography, history, crafts, legends, religion/spirituality, politics and more.
I would definitely recommend this book to someone who was looking for more than just the basics. The book provided me with a "jumping off point" for researching more about the subjects that interested me...a kind of a text book that gives you a broader overview on the subject.
Nice little study.......2000-09-29
There are many books available on Celtic tradition and lore, but this one combines them very nicely. Well-written and well-illustrated, it is a good introduction to Celtic studies. For the newbie who wants to peek into the world of the Celts to see if he might be interested in further reading, or for the already-student who wants to delve a little deeper, you'll find it an asset to your library.
Book Description
Buddhism is a major spiritual and ethical force in the world today--and certainly one of the fastest growing religions in the West. Its compelling insights into human existence offer an ancient and radical alternative to the materialism of the modern age. More and more people are turning to Buddhism to rediscover the human and the spiritual values they find lacking in traditional Western religions. Now, in this strikingly illustrated and authoritative volume, general readers have an illuminating introduction of one of the world's great living faiths. Based on the most recent scholarship, Buddhism provides a vibrantly written and marvelously illustrated overview of this ancient and yet still vital religion. Each chapter is written by an acknowledged authority in the field. The book describes the origins and historic development of Buddhism as well as current trends. Perhaps most important, it explores the central, unifying principles of a religious and philosophical system that finds expression in an extraordinary diversity of forms, from the elaborate and esoteric rituals of Tantric Buddhism to the rarefied, minimalist refinement of Zen. A major section is devoted to an analysis of the religion's more important sacred writings. And throughout the book, magnificent illustrations capture the sacred art, architecture, daily practices, and symbols inspired by the Buddha and his teaching. Buddhism in the United States has grown dramatically. Buddhism: The Illustrated Guide offers a wealth of reference information that will deepen one's understanding and appreciation of this ancient Eastern faith.
Customer Reviews:
Great book on Buddhism!.......2007-09-18
I really enjoyed reading this book! The book is comprehensive, yet written clearly and understandably. The book gives you the history of the religion and originating countries. Well-written and enjoyable!
Suitable for both the scholar and the laity.......2007-07-06
Written by some of the most respected scholars in the field, Buddhism the Illustrated Guide is both highly accessible and sophisticated. The authors have managed to present the vast and complex array of beliefs, practices, and relationships constitutive of this world religion with the brevity of exceptional scholarship. Yet, astoundingly, throughout the entire compendium, one is never deprived of the rich texture and depth of lived Buddhism, which is quite rare in objective scholarship. This debasing of religion to trite, and often insipid, historical outlines is, unfortunately, often characteristic of most erudite attempts to impartially summarize religions. On another note, this work also represents a paradigmatic shift in contemporary Buddhist studies away from the western presupposition of Buddhism as primarily a rational quest and a new attempt to "rematerialize" Buddhism by emphasizing the role of ritual, image, and relic. This introduction is simply unmatched in its treatment of Buddhism, and it has enough flavor to get anyone excited about learning. From its exquisite high quality images which adorn almost every page and regular sidebar commentaries, to its easily accessible chapter sections, Buddhism practically comes to life as you flip the pages.
insanely awesome.......2006-08-15
I don't know what it is about these Duncan Baird hardcover titles. Whether it's the visual appeal of the litany of two-to-four-page spreads, the flood of color and texture, or the deliberate crispness of the sidebars, all contribute to the tessitura of a truly unique library of works. The current opus is a strong introduction to the underpinnings, trappings, and implications of Buddhism, beginning with its history and motivational background and carefully working through all the historical and, ultimately, modern instantiations of this unique way of life and thought. Not that they pertain to Buddhism at all, scholars, do yourselves a favor and check out the Duncan Baird hardcover editions "China: Empire and Civilization" by Shaughnessy and "Jesus Christ: The Jesus of History, the Christ of Faith" and "The Lost Bible" by Porter. They are a treasure to have, to hold, to thumb threw, to admire, to lose oneself in, let alone to devour and learn from.
Good modern intro to Buddhism for Western readers.......2005-09-24
My first exposure to Buddhist ideas was in the 1960s, in California, in what I later realized was a rather self-conscious, thoroughly Westernized form that viewed Buddhism as a philosophy rather than a "religion," compared to Christianity. American and European scholarship regarding Buddhist thought and its application in eastern social systems has changed considerably in the past few decades, however, and this recent volume is a very good introductory overview. Each section is written and edited by a different scholarly authority, beginning with Buddhism's historical and political origins, progressing to its principals and practices and a discussion of its evolved holy writings, and concluding with a section on "Buddhism Today" that points up its diversity from Indian to China to Japan to southeast Asia. The narrative is smooth and frequent sidebars offer more detailed explanations of doctrinal or historical points as needed. The illustrations are numerous and mostly in color. My only gripe, really, is an editorial one: On nearly every page, it seems, there is at least one in-text cross-reference ("see pp. 20-21") which encourage the reader to jump around, which leads one to lose track of what are often very alien ideas.

Singing The Praises Of The Goddess.......2006-06-11
Lisa Hunt's 'Celestial Goddesses' is an exquiste devotional book to the Great Goddess unlike anything I've ever come across. Llewellyn went all out on this one and produced a beautifully bound hardcover book of the highest quality with wonderful 8 X 10 color prints of each Goddess included within.
Twenty Goddesses were chosen for this "Litany to the Goddess."
1) Amaterasu - Japanese 2) Arianrhod - Welsh 3) Artemis - Greek 4) Chang-O - Chinese 5) Coyolxauhqui - Aztec 6) Hina - Polynesian 7) Inaana - Summerian 8) Isis - Egypt 9) Luonnotar - Finnish 10) Mama Quilla - Peruvian 11) Mawu - Fon (West African) 12) Nut - Egypt 13) Pana - Inuit 14) Saule - Slavic 15) Selene - Greek 16) Tara - Asian 17) Unelanuhi - Cherokee 18) Ushas - Eastern Indian 19) White Shell Woman - Navaho 20) Wuriupranili - Aborigine (Australian).
While some of my favorite Goddesses were left out (Freyja, Pele and Kali) there exclusion is more than made up for by the discovery of lesser known "Energies" that I was totally unfamiliar with until I bought this book.
Simply a must buy for any and all pagans seeking expanded contact with the Divine Feminine or anyone who loves art. Absolutely Magnificent! My Utmost Highest Recommendation!!
Review by Katrina Rasbold.......2005-01-04
(From thedivadigest.com)
It is easy at first glance to dismiss this work as a book for children, so vibrant is the artwork and so simple and concise is the narrative. Although it would be a lovely introduction to Goddess myths for the older child, its worth to the adult world deserves high accolades, both as an informative text and a meditative tool.
Utilizing the wonderful art of talented Lisa Hunt (who has been a bookmark in my browser favorites forever), the book has been given a generous hand by Llewellyn publishers, using beautiful 8x10" color plates of the Celestial Goddess series. The glossy pages also contain, for each of the goddesses explored, a page of mythology, a guided meditation and a full page dedicated to one basic thought regarding that particular Goddess, such as "Life is full of mountains and valleys. The goddess can provide you with the necessary guiding light and energy to help you reach your goals" for Coyolxauhqui. Having the 1-2 sentence thought to synopsize the energy of goddess portrayed written in the center of a plain, white page makes it all the more poignant and evokes a strong, meditative presence. The meditations are brief, but effective and have been carefully selected to effectively convey the energy being depicted for each of the Goddesses.
There are 20 goddesses highlighted, fearlessly ignoring any imaginary boundaries of pantheon and plucking both the famous and obscure from a number of traditions. Each goddess is an experience and the reader will feel complete immersion in the sheer essence of the individual deity that is represented. This book is, quite simply and "quiet, simply" a masterpiece experience.
RATING: 5 Pentacles
Blown Away!!.......2003-03-07
Lisa Hunt is one of the best illustrators working today and this book proves she is a great author as well.
In the book, she paints wonderful images of goddesses from many cultures, and then creates a guided meditations based on each ones strengths and influences. It is a magical journey through the different beliefs of our diverse world.
If you have an interest in the Goddess, meditation just love to look at gorgeous artwork, then I highly recommend picking Celestial Goddesses up!
Beautiful artwork.......2001-12-18
The artwork in this book is AMAZING! My wife purchased this, but I felt I had to comment on the art, because it is quite remarkable, that alone makes this worth the price.

Nice intro to mythology.......2003-04-21
If you do not have any idea on any culture's mythology this book is for you. After an intro on mythology, its role in societies, the book goes to tell the stories on mythologies of the different cultures, ancient civilizations and today's primitive societies. If you want to have deeper knowledge do not miss the references at the end of the book.
