Book Description

An acclaimed writer takes readers inside the world of M. Night Shyamalan—the most successful filmmaker of his generation—as he creates a new movie masterpiece

In 1999, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan exploded onto the cinema scene with his supernatural thriller The Sixth Sense, which garnered major acclaim and raked in massive box office numbers around the globe. Since then, his phenomenal commercial and critical success has continued as his films—including Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village—have grossed over $1.5 billion and reinvented the thriller genre. But throughout his rise to prominence, Shyamalan has remained separate from the Hollywood system, living and working solely in his hometown area of Philadelphia, and keeping his ideas, filmmaking techniques, and business practices tightly-kept secrets.

In The Man Who Heard Voices, journalist Michael Bamberger takes readers inside Shyamalan's world for the first time, getting total access to the man who has been called “the modern-day Hitchcock” as he prepares, creates, and test-screens his next film, Lady in the Water, which stars Paul Giamatti (star of Sideways) as a building superintendent and Bryce Howard (star of The Village) as a mysterious sea nymph. Bamberger's intimate perspective and insightful narrative prose will bring to life Shyamalan's creative process—from his multiple drafts and revisions of the screenplay to his on-location work with his cinematographer and crew and his relationships with the actors under his direction. The book also follows the high- stakes business decisions behind the scenes, including his agonizing decision to move from Disney to Warner Bros. for this film, his involvement in the studio's massive marketing campaign, and the evaluation of the crucial initial test-screening of the film.

If you're an M. Night fan you will not be able to put this book down. It's amazing.

5 out of 5 stars An unbiased look at the film making process.......2007-04-11

I almost didn't read this book after reading some of the reviews and comments made by others on this site. I'm glad I decided to give this book a chance. This is a must read for anyone interested in the process of film making. The fact that the author is a sports writer and not involved in the film industry gives the book more authenticity, not less. The journey from script to completed film is told through the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time and not prejudiced by other films.

I read the book first and then saw the movie (on DVD). If you haven't seen the movie, this is the order I would recommend. You'll especially like the DVD extras after reading about the various collaborators in the book. If the "Lady" script had been submitted by a no-name screenwriter, it would never have made it past the script readers. Yet not only did Night get to make a movie based on a weak story idea with a weak script, he got Warner Brothers to put in over a hundred million dollars to film and market it. No matter how talented the actors, the cinematographer, or the director, if it doesn't work on the page it isn't going to work on the screen. This book shows how bad movies get made.

5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Ignored Voices.......2007-04-06

After delivering "Lady in the Water", Shyamalan somehow managed to offend a pubescent American culture that prefers to be the offender. And somehow he did it without any pretentious artistic attempts at being shocking through sex, violence and vulgarity. Kind of ironic that it would take a bedtime story to get under the skin of a society plagued with the Peter Pan syndrome. And then he tops it off by having the audacity to let a biographer tell us how he did it. I mean, the nerve of Shyamalan. Why can't he blow his own horn like everybody else?

But that's what happens when one is an artist truly committed to his art. And instead of taking the usual X-Rated route of cage rattling, Night pulled it off with a PG-13 Rating. Impressive.

But to read this book you realize that he paid the price of the much sought after and coveted title of being "controversial" -- even if that wasn't his goal. In fact, from this book we learn that his intentions were the exact opposite. He was hoping to inspire a hopelessly adolescent culture that is hell-bent on being cynical. Because, you know, cynicism is a worthy accomplishment.

Michael Bamberger, the biogrpaher, seems to be somewhere in the middle of this willingness to be inspired and cynical resistance (He admits to having spotted feelings about "Lady"). This makes him more than just a biographer but also a character in his own story. While Bamberger describes Shyamalans vulnerabilities and strengths in the turbulent ride of artistic rejection and redemption, I couldn't help but wonder about Berbengers feelings while acting as a passenger. And he is a passenger. When someone else is doing the driving and your duty is to watch, you have a heightened sense of doom when the driver is irrational and, at times, reckless. Bamberger all too often becomes the rubber-neck passenger watching the chaos that sometimes zooms past Nights peripheral. For instance, the erratic antics of the Director of Photography often occur when Night has left the room.

There is a palpable doom that soaks these pages. Bamberger knew while shadowing Night that the "Lady" was going to show the darker side of herself. The side of her that was a "B*itch." It comes through vividly when he describes Giamatti's late, albiet enthusiastic, acceptance of the role which threw Shyamalan into a mild panic. And that's just the beginning.

One of the recurring themes that Bamberger picked up from Night and migrated into this book is loneliness. Nights loneliness in the development of his movie is so well documented by Bamberger that it becomes experiential for the reader. You'll find from chapter to chapter how loose the strings really were as Night struggled to keep his often reticent players tied together. It's painful to read, because the very people who doubted Night -- and his script -- happen to be on his side. But this is all proof that Night really is the innovator that cynics and critics wish he wasn't. Innovation is inherently a lonely mans game. And naysayers who lack the courage for innovation are always looking forward to seeing the courageous take a loss in their own game.

I think it's safe to say that these same critics are among the voices chattering away in Nights head. That is why, from this book, we learn that Nights personal journey was not just to make a movie, but to silence those voices by being insubordinate. It takes a genius to be a rebel during the day and tell bedtime stories at night.

1 out of 5 stars The Man Who Heard Razzberries.......2007-03-15

I agree that Bamberger could be the greatest satirist living, if that was his intention. The endless verbal oral sex the author performs on his subject...The abject awe...It is truly hilarious.
It's also true that you'll only enjoy laughing at this road apple of a book IF you didn't pay anything for it, as I didn't.
Let us all hope that in the future, M. Night Shamalamadingdong does NOT listen to the same voices that told him to put out "Lady in the Water," AND this book.

3 out of 5 stars I was looking for just a little more..........2007-01-22

I enjoyed this book, but I admit that as I was nearing the middle of it, I started to lose some interest. It began to tell me that the entertainment business is all the hype, egos, and vanity I thought it was to begin with. And it got a bit boring in parts. My interest came back again at about three quarters of the way through. This may or may not be because that is about the time I watched Lady in the Water on DVD. I so enjoyed the movie... it has a great combination of little laughters, mystery, emotion, and storytelling. There were parts and characters that could have been developed better... I say this after reading the book since I did feel I had a better understanding of the idea behind some characters than the movie portrayed. (This after watching with my husband, who did not read the book... though he liked the movie.)

Interestingly, I think the book's author and Shyamalan are having the same struggles. Both of them have a little trouble getting out of their own way. There are moments when Shyamalan seems to lose it and blame others for his dissatisfactions when making the movie. Bamberger throws in one too many "dude"s and "dig it" type dialogues as well... as if he is trying too hard to portray Shyamalan as an ordinary guy. Paul Giamatti comes across as the wonderful and ordinary guy. Probably because he doesn't think about it, he just is. Shyamalan's reactions to Disney and others seem confusing to me. The folks at Disney did tell him that he could make the movie, yet his attitude was as if they were supposed to treat him like a movie god and not hesitate. In the end it sounds like the movie, the story, could have truly been great if he had gotten out of his own way. He did what he told Cindy Cheung to stop doing... trying too hard and not just letting it happen. It seems like there could have been tremendous gains if the story were kicked around for another year. While I really did enjoy the movie, it could have made the difference from a really good story to an amazing story. I think Shyamalan may have learned from the experience, and as an excellent director, I'm anticipating some amazing movies yet to come in my lifetime.

In recommending this book, it depends on what you want out of it. Definitely a great read if you are interested in moviemaking. Perhaps a learning experience if you are interested in a struggle to do what your own inner voices may be telling you.

On recommending the movie... definitely. Especially if you love magically stories. The look and feel of the movie is well done. Lots of interesting characters. (I loved the Anna Ran and Mr. Drury characters the best.)

Book Description

The seven members of the Bastion Club have served loyally in the perilous service of the Crown. Now they've banded together to support one another through their most dangerous mission of all: getting married.

When Charles St. Austell returns home to claim his title as earl, and to settle quickly on a suitable wife as well, he discovers that experience has made him impatient of the young ladies who vie for his attention—with the exception of Lady Penelope Selborne. Years ago, Charles and Penelope's youthful ardor was consummated in an unforgettable afternoon. Charles is still haunted by their interlude, but Penny refuses to have anything more to do with him.

If controlling her heart was difficult before, resisting a stronger, battle-hardened Charles is well nigh impossible, yet Penelope has vowed she won't make the same mistake twice, nor will she marry without love. But when a traitorous intrigue draws them together, then ultimately threatens them both—will Penny discover she has a true protector in Charles, her first and only love, who now vows to make her his own?

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Read.......2007-10-04

I absolutely loved this book!! It was very intriguing and entertaining! Stephanie Laurens really knows how to write a very, very good book!!!

2 out of 5 stars Wake Me Up, Please.......2006-07-18

This is the story of Charles and Penny (Bastion Club Series). They were childhood friends who became lovers in their teens. He left and went to war, she stayed at home and never married. When Penny's late family is found to be involved in possible spying for the French, Charles is sent to investigate. He knows it is time to get married and decides Penny is the one for him. He vows to take his time so not to scare her off. In the meantime, they decide to investigate if her late brother and father as well as her living uncle and cousin are guilty of spying for the French.

This is one of those rare books that took me weeks to read. I can usually read a good one in one day. The problem, repetitive dragging and boring filler for the first half of the book. The second half overdid the sex almost like Ms. Laurens was trying to pep it up desperately after such a boring start.

I started reading Stephanie Laurens Cysnter novels and got hooked after the first couple of books. However, it seems almost every book afterwards has been a disappointment. She uses the same formula for every book. Boy pursues girl, girl resists, boy gets girl they investigate a mystery and the girl almost gets killed but is rescued by the boy. Yawn! Please give us some original material.

5 out of 5 stars An unexpected delight. An "A" read........2006-01-12

A Lady of his Own was a welcomed surprise. In recent years, especially with the Cynster series, Stephanie Laurens has fallen into a very predictable rut. While enjoyable, her books had basic carbon copies of characters and plots. Lady, however is a great exception.

Main Characters Charles St. Austell, Earl of Lostwithiel and Lady Penelope "Penny" Selborne grew up together and had one intimate encounter 13 years ago. Now back from spending those 13 years as a spy in France, Charles needs a wife. He's bored and put off by all the vapid Misses and their willing subterfuge that he no longer wants any part of. He wants someone who will be a real, loving wife. A partner with a real connection. To his relief Charles has been sent to his home to investigate the possibility that secrets were sold there during the war. Enter Penny. And a mystery.

Penny has tried to put Charles behind her. She loved him when she was 16 but was under the hurtful impression that he saw her as just a bit of fun. Of course, that couldn't be further from the truth. In the midst of her turmoil of Charles's return, she is running her own investigation, believing her family to be the ones who sold the secrets to the French.

A thoroughly adult and cliché free tale, Laurens brings to life characters and a couple that are completely relatable with out any of the insane runaround and monologue that many other books indulge in. She even avoids the much over played line that 29-year-old Penny might be "incomplete" because she does not have a child. On the contrary, she is happy for her friends with children, but has never felt especially maternal. Penny and Charles know what they want and progress towards it with nary a misstep. Supportive, open, intuitive, and protective of one another they are everything you wish your own relationship could be.

The mystery is a good one as well. While the perpetrator is obvious half way through, the exact nature of things is not revealed till the end.

The only negatives I can list are a tendency to use modern terms like "cramp his style" and a few many redundant monologues concerning the mystery.

3 out of 5 stars This One Just Didn't Work For Me..........2005-12-28

This is the second novel by SL that I have read. I also picked up "A Fine Passion" and read and reviewed that earlier (good book). Unfortunately, this second pick was not quite up to par.

Although I found the story line interesting and the characters a challenge...it was almost a bit too much of a good thing. The basic nature of this was a spy tale not a love story. The elements of spying on each other and solving the mystery of the heroine's family legacy and the possible killer on the loose over-road the basic love story of the main characters Penny and Charles. Just when I would read some passages of serious love interaction between the two...they would then jump into spy talk, detective actions and so on. Then when I would get engrossed in the spy passages....they would have flashbacks to their early years together and/or current sexual attraction issues. It was like a tennis match - back and forth, back and forth. I think it was simply a good thing gone bad.

I think the author tried hard to make the story deep and intriguing to balance out the typical lightness that goes with historical romances but, for me...this one just didn't work. I like the authors writing style, her development of plots and character depth but, on this book, I just didn't ever bond with the situation or the people. Too much going back and forth killed the story and intensity for me.

The fact that these two seemed to be so attracted and sexual 13 years earlier and then meet up and nothing has changed seemed a bit far fetched. They spent ½ their lives apart and yet things can take off better than ever? That was too much for me. Plus...neither seemed to fight their feelings and just acted on impulse all the time. Although this was great in the spontaneity areas and their was plenty of sexual outings together, it didn't seem likely for the time or the risk of pregnancies back then.

Both these characters - Penny and Charles had so much potential but....sadly, it just never developed in the current context. Most of what we knew about these people were about who they used to be? I just couldn't get a grip on who they were now and why they would be creating a future together. They had too much past, not enough now and only the spy tale seemed to pull them together again.

The side characters in this book didn't warrant much interest either.

Although this book only got three stars, I still bought other books by this author and hope for better in the other stories. Don't give up on SL if you don't like this book - it just wasn't one of her better or more memorable tales. It could have been but, simply didn't work out that way. On to another....

3 out of 5 stars 3rd book of series needs some pick me up.......2005-07-10

I had a really hard time reading this book. I love Stephanie Laurens she's usually such a wonderful writer. Most of her leading ladies are older and mature not young giddy things. The men too usually know what they want and what they're looking for. This book however seems to be dragging. Almost as if there needed to be filler. The filler drags the book. I will continue to read her books but hope that the others will be full of action and speed along.

from "abuse" to "yearning", TD Jakes' inspirational book details a bible verse for every situation and healing words that uplift the spirit and soothes the soul. For women who are going thru tough times in their lives and making "baby steps" to the Lord, this book will be dog-eared thru multiple use and constant referencing, never straying far from the coffee table or bedside. The underlying message is that we mortals must realize that God has a plan for our lives and that our pain/suffering/loss is a temporary building block on the steps for him to receive, then deliver us. A MUST-HAVE those who love TD's work and/or those who have "drama" they're trying to make sense of.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Inspiration.......2001-03-17

Within this Book you will find all that you need to confront all of your trials and overcome all of your obstacles. It is divided into sections that help with everyday concerns as anger, anxiety, temptation, and despair.

5 out of 5 stars Sacred Words.......1999-09-28

Once again, Bishop T.D. Jakes transforms God's Word into another miracle of anointing upon each and every one of us. He reminds us that God uniquely designed every woman on earth and of the power we posses when we have a true spiritual walk. Waiting on the next blessing...

5 out of 5 stars This wonderful book has the ability to instantly inspire........1999-08-15

The closest women in my life (my mom and sister) took one, quick look through the book and were instantly inspired. It's very hard to put down--and the way it is arranged makes it a book that you will pick up time and again throughout your life. It is arranged by emotions/feelings and conditions. It would be an excellent Christmas present or a thoughtful gift to someone going through troubling times.

    5 out of 5 stars Who Doesn't Love a Good Pirate Story?.......2007-02-02

I really loved Port Royal, so I couldn't wait to get The Pirate and His Lady. The pacing was really intense, but the love story is so beautiful. The last chapter is worth reading the book for!

5 out of 5 stars Great sequel, and very intense!.......2007-01-08

Though the first book in this series, "Port Royal", is my favorite of the three, the second book is almost as good, and the last few chapters are extremely intense.

Emerald and Baret's story continues, and at last, the time has come for Baret to confront his feelings for Emerald. The love story here will take your breath away, and the misunderstandings between Emerald and Baret in the last fourth of the novel will make you want to throw the book across the room!

Though the third novel is slightly disappointing (in terms of how brief it is compared to the other two), this is a great series, and one of Linda Chaikin's best.

5 out of 5 stars The Pirate And His Lady is Amazing!.......2003-05-13

Emerald Harwick finds herself in danger on the high seas. In the midst of war on the Jamaican seas, she finds her Christian Faith and loyalty are tested to the limit. Pirates, Buccaneers and Rulers of the world are beautifully intertwined in this story of danger, love, and the search for truth.
There are few good, Christian authors around, But Linda Chaikin would be one of those few. This book was simply heartstopping! i cried, i laughed, and even got frustrated!
But in the end, it leaves you so happy you feel you could cry. That's how a book should leave you. She tells it like you're actually there, watching the story play before your eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than "TITANIC".......2002-08-14

I picked up this book completely by accident, but ended up buying the other two books in the series I loved it so much! Baret is the best hero I've read about so far, and Emerald is the epitome of grace and the Proverbs 31 woman with her heart being after God's own. Their escapades on the high seas of the Caribbean got my heart going as much, if not more, than James Cameron's TITANIC.
I highly recommend it to anyone wanting an escape, but also a lesson on learning to trust and love... God has a plan for each of us, and Linda Chaikin effortlessly crafts this into all her works. READ THIS! BUY THIS! *****

    Book Description

Squire Terence and Sir Gawain are off questing again, but this time their journey is overshadowed by their ultimate destination: Gawain is to meet up with the Green Knight in a contest that could easily lead to Gawain's death. Along the way the two have a slew of hair-raising adventures and encounter the usual odd assortment of characters, including the plucky Lady Eileen. Sparks instantly fly between Terence and Eileen as she joins the squire and his knight on their travels. As they weave their way between the world of men and the Other World, Gawain and Terence discover much about themselves. The Squire, His Knight, and His Lady is the sequel to Gerald Morris's debut book, The Squire's Tale, about which the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books raved, "This Arthurian road trip will have readers wondering why there aren't more books like this one and hoping that Morris will do it again." And so he has.

    5 out of 5 stars Delightful Retelling!.......2007-08-03

I borrowed The Squire, His Knight and His Lady from my public library. This is a wonderful book! I like it very much because it is based off of Arthurian Legends, but goes into greater detail about each of the characters and their own challenges and personalities. I read this before I read The Squire's Tale, which is book one, because I was unaware that it was a series, but was satisfied enough to read it in backwards order. It would have been all the more exciting, however, to read it in the right order. I am still reading The Squire's Tale, have the next book waiting, and hope to find the next few books at my library as well. It might not be the most fast-paced book, but still I enjoyed it very much.
The main character is Terence, who becomes squire to Sir Gawain, one of King Arthur's knights. It also involves several battles, and lovely Ladies. I really did like this book a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Sassy characters and a new adventure around every corner!.......2007-04-03

After reading one book by author Gerald Morris, we were addicted! Now my husband (43), my son (12), and myself (37) are fighting over every book in the Squire's Tale series that we can get our hands on! We bought this book because we heard it was "good literature." We had no idea HOW good until we read it. It is clever, witty, sarcastic, adventurous, and inspirational! My husband laughed so hard he cried! It is a very entertaining retelling of the King Arthur stories and Canterbury Tales, complete with knights, castles, princesses, magic, fairies, herbs with healing powers, and quests! The characters as sassy and full of spunk, and there is a new adventure around every corner. We recommended these books to our local library, some of the librarians read one of the books, and they ended up ordering a bunch of the books from The Squire's Tales series for the library. (This book is the seventh in the series but, personally, it's my favorite. My husband and son each have other favorites from this series, though, so you'll want to read them all.) It is easy to recommend such a charming and entertaining book!

5 out of 5 stars Yet ANOTHER Book to Get Lost In!!! jmeascsKeinnon .......2006-12-29

The Squire, His Knight, and His Lady is a good book. O.K, it's a great book. FINE!!! I'll admit it! It's one of the best books I've ever read!

Starting with a deadly challenge from an other-worldly knight, the book takes off on a series of cliff-hanging medieval adventures. In this book you'll enter a totally new world, brimming full of enchantments, magic, dimwits and more! The characters are interesting, witty and realistic. Although there's some romance in the end, this is a tale any one from 10-101 can read and enjoy. A sequel to The Squire's Tale, The Squire, His Knight and His Lady is a GREAT book to get lost in!

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!!!.......2005-01-30

I am a King Arthur, And his knights of course, FREAK!! With this book I couldn't put it down! I really enjoy the twist that Gerald Morris put on Gawain. Terence and Eileen are the perfect couple and are both fun to read about. I didn't really like the way he portrayed Lancelot, but I really favor him, cause he is my favorite. Of coarse other charecters that he portrayed extremly well, ALMOST made up for it.Over all he did a great job with this tale that spins off A Squire's Tale.
Can't wait to read the next book!

    5 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2003-09-13

This book is really funny. It only reminded me a little of Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles, though I have heard it called almost the same. The style of writing is extremely funny, and anyone looking for a similar style of writing should read P.C. Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles and Sorcery & Cecelia.
The characters were well done, and I found the attitude towards Guinevere, French Knights and Lancelot very funny. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

    1) To the thousands and thousands of enlightened fans who have since purchased this sacred tome and have been healed of loneliness, depression and sexual impoverishment, I offer my meritorious acknowledgement to them all.

    2) I had the pleasure of contacting Reese Hughs (an editor from NY). He now genuinely regrets writing his above comments when soon after his wife had left him. Ironically, my book was the only self-help paperback he owned at the time-he said it had unexpectedly helped him get back on his feet and discover a much better woman.

    3) These 500 powerful rules are based on medieval secret texts regarding chivalry towards women and improving the spirit of man. Our work truly demonstrates respect for women and does not degrade them in any way. In fact, I have yet to hear nothing but praise from our feminine counterparts. Even many a lady buy it as a gift for her special guy when he's not treating her right.

    4) Why buy this book? Because, it is the simplest, funniest, and most practical book you'll ever read relating to woman and finding one of them as your kindred mate.

1 out of 5 stars TOTALLY LACKING RESPECT FOR WOMEN!.......2002-10-25

In his day in age you would think that men would have some more respect for their female counter parts. The authors of this book should take a good strong look at themselves and ask, "where the hell did our lives go sooo wrong?". Goodman and Sexton should be locked up with people like howard stern. Their book is nothing more than nasty tips from a smooth talking casanova who only has one thing on his mind.........sex. Do not buy this book. It is merely a tool used to get sex. DISGUSTING!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2002-03-20

A friend bought me this book for my birthday as a joke but man is it ever good! The authors really did a great job of making this a fun read and many of the things they write are so true! A must read for all!

5 out of 5 stars The rules rewritten for guys!.......2002-01-22

This IS the greatest-ever guy's guide. The entire text is fun, funny and full of great advice. From unique pick-up lines to towing the line and understanding respect, this guide covers it all. It's perfect for guys who are just entering the meet-date-and-relate scene to those who find they may need to hone their skills. This is the tool to use! Goodman and Sexton form a witty, and slightly wacky, team of dating experts. This guy's guide should be kept within arm's reach of any bachelor around.

          Book Description

George Washington comes alive in this fascinating activity book that introduces the leader to whom citizens turned again and again—to lead them through eight long years of war, to guide them as they wrote a new Constitution, and to act as the new nation’s first executive leader. Children will learn how, shortly after his death in 1799, people began transforming George Washington from a man into a myth. But Washington was a complex individual who, like everyone, had hopes and fears, successes and failures. In his early 20s, for instance,Washington’s actions helped plunge Great Britain and France into war. He later fought for liberty and independence, yet owned slaves himself (eventually freeing them in his will). This book weaves a rich tapestry of Washington’s life, allowing kids to connect with his story in 21 hands-on projects based on his experiences and the times in which he lived. Children will learn how to tie a cravat, write with a quill pen, follow animal tracks, sew a lady’s cap, plant a garden, roll a beeswax candle, play a game of Quoits, and make a replica of Washington’s commander-in-chief flag. The text includes a time line, glossary, websites, travel resources, and a reading list for further study.
