Different methods of meditation.......2006-03-23
This book an overview of the major different meditation paths and would appeal to those who have a questioning mind - its analysis of the various paths is quite objective. If you are looking for general guidelines and a justification of the positive aspects of meditation this book is definitely worth reading.
A Great Overview of Meditation Practices.......2005-08-30
In THE MEDITATIVE MIND: THE VARIETIES OF MEDITATIVE EXPERIENCE Daniel Goleman does an even more comprehensive job of covering his subject matter than William James did in his classic study of relgion,THE VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE. Goleman covers a wider range of experiences and -- given that psychology has come a long way since James'day -- provides a more detailed analysis. This book ranks with Aldous Huxley's THE PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY as a modern classic on spiritual paths. He makes a good case for meditation as an ancient "psychotechnology" (my words, not his) for the transformation of consciousness. He cuts through the superficial differences in meditative practices, and points out what all of them share at the core: the retraining of attention.
A complete path.......2003-04-28
I found this book 5 years ago and have really not found another book which is better at describing complete path with such clarity, and richness. I think this book is extremely helpful for all meditators who are interested in seeing where they are on the path. For without a map, it is extremely easy for any meditator to become lost and not make any real progress. This book in my opinion can also be used to assess the presence of authentic teachers, someone who has traversed at least 4 levels of absorption, have seen validity attachment in cause of suffering, have begun purification of their bodies as well as their minds, and have experienced true emptiness and not fallen into attachment afterwards.
Scientific study of meditation.......2002-03-22
Good overall book of meditation. Goleman makes the distinction between the two major types of meditation: Concentration and Mindfulness. He also gives a pretty thorough description of the Visuddhimagga mind maps. He goes on to describe Hindu Bhaki, Jewish Kabblah, Christian Hesychasm, Sufism, TM, Ashtanga, Tantra and Kundalini Yoga, Tibetan Buddhism, Zen, Gurdjeiff and Krishnamurti
Exceptionally Clear Presentation of Meditation.......1998-07-17
1. The distinction between concentration and mindfulness as forms of practice has never in my reading experience been so clearly stated. (My meditation library is extensive and my practice is 7 years old.) 2. The stages of insight work -- also, the clearest presentation in my reading experience. Particularly helpful were the discussions on "visions" (p. 12) and pseudonirvana (p. 26). 3. Part IV: The Psychology of Meditation -- This is a gem. Ties in beautifully with _Emotional Intelligence_ (another Goleman treasure). The "altered states or altered traits" of consciousness discussion (pg. 172-5) is the best explanation of the "3rd foundation of mindfulness" I have seen. Summary: If you are interested in how your practice fits into the grand scheme of practices or looking for a menu to chose from, this is the book. If you want a clarification of the path at the center of all practices, no where else have I seen a better presentation.
This! ! is a seven star book as is _Emotional Intelligence_.

Book Description
Written for the terminally ill and their families as well as for hospice workers and others involved in the care of the dying, Life to Death introduces the technique of co-meditation: a method for helping a patient maintain a "clear mind and peaceful heart" during the process of dying. For centuries Tibetan lamas have used special breathing techniques and shared meditation practices to maintain a calm mental state in the dying person and ensure a safe transition. Adapting these powerful principles of consciousness transformation to modern Western needs, the authors have made accessible to all a profoundly compassionate technique for helping those most in need.
In addition to easing the suffering of the terminally ill, co-meditation provides families and other loved ones with a meaningful and constructive way of supporting the dying person.
The book covers a wide range of topics associated with death and dying and provides comfort and coping stategies.
Hospice staffs, AIDS volunteers, caregivers, and those who are facing death themselves will find this guide invaluable. A separate chapter addresses the special needs of those with AIDS and other debilitating conditions and those who care for them.
Life to Death also includes a script for a co-meditation session, complete with relaxation and visualization techniques.

Original material may be better.......2006-03-30
The original material from The Clear Light Society (www.ClearLightSociety.org) is better. The physical techniques described are accurate (accurately copied), but the origin, background, and validation are not there. Look to the original material.
Not original material.......2005-10-13
This book is entirely comprised of material lifted, without credit, from The Clear Light Society (www.ClearLightSociety.org). The physical techniques described are accurate (accurately copied), but the origin, background, and validation are just not there. Look to the original material.

One of the best buddhist meditation manuals available.......2007-01-12
So much fluffy stuff has been written about meditation in recent years that it can sometimes be difficult to even know what the word means. This book, through clear language and concise instruction, blows any fuzziness about what meditation is, how to do it, and what to expect from the practice competely away.
Based on a series of instructional lectures and Q&A sessions at a meditation retreat, Calming the Mind is one of the best manuals that a student of Buddhist (or any other spiritual tradition) meditation is likely to find. The lama's straight forward descriptions remove some of the mystification that seems endemic to some other instructional works without oversimplifying what is called for.
Highly recommended for any serious student of internal spiritual development.
Fairly good book on tranquil abiding........1999-04-12
This book is a guide to the development of tranquil abiding/meditative quiescence/samatha as taught in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. There is really nothing new here that cannot be found in standard lamrim texts, but the subject matter is fleshed out somewhat in a fairly nice fashion. Its main drawback stems from the conception of the book, which is just a reworking of a series of talks the author gave to a group of Westerners at the beginning of a year-long meditation retreat aimed at developing tranquil abiding. As such, some of what it has to say may not apply to the reader. Also, it will not address some of the peculiar problems any reader might encounter if they themselves set out to do such a retreat. Those wishing to develop tranquil abiding themselves will need to do their own retreat under the guidance of a teacher, but perhaps this book could prove useful by giving them the bare outlines of what it is they are to do and why. An added bonus is the gorgeous tangka on the cover.
Practical Intro to the Development of Concentration.......1998-10-06
Shamatha meditation, a Tibetan name for all meditations that settle, focus, and concentrate the mind, is not unique to Buddhism. In fact in many ways part of Buddhism's fresh approach is that it took this particular kind of meditation and in a sense "secularized" it - essentially removing some of the religious symbolism and esoterism that surrounded the development of concentration in India. Shamatha meditation is unique in that it's "contentless" and provides the foundation for all other religious practices.

A welcome introduction for the novice.......2001-02-10
Robin Rabbin is a contemporary mystic who has been facilitating Meditative Inquiry retreats for more than fifteen years. In Echoes Of Silence, he draws upon his considerable expertise and experience to instruct the reader in the art of meditation as a method of achieving inner peace and happiness. Rabbin explores the true nature of meditation, revealing what it is -- and is not. Rabbin employs prose poems combined with beautiful duotone images to dispel many of the myths surrounding the authentic meditative experience. Echoes Of Silence is highly original, "reader friendly", a welcome introduction for the novice, and with much to offer even those having prior experience with meditation.
The essence of nondualism........2000-08-08
Robert Rabbin has achieved the near-impossible; he gives us the essence of the nondual without leaving us stuck in the mind. His aphorisms are simultaneously the map and a glimpse of the actual territory, and remind me of the discourses of the great J. Krishnamurti.
Defines the indefinable........2000-08-08
Once again, Robert Rabbin has managed to define the indefinable....to bring understanding to what seems incomprehensible for many of us. His unique and gifted style of turning words into wisdom brings clarity to the silence within us. Echoes of Silence is truly the meditation guidebook for the new Millennium.
Timeless as the soul........2000-08-08
Rabbin's sutras are as timeless as the soul, providing a nourishing nectar for our hungry spirits. Packed with the wisdom of a true sage, this is a book you can read over and over since the words on its pages are ageless and will serve the soul forever. I will keep it with me always.
Eloquent and articulate........2000-08-08
Mr. Rabbin vividly describes the true nature and uncompromising power of the meditative experience in his new book. His eloquent and articulate style of illustrating the true spirit of meditation penetrates to the core of practice, revealing the bare essence of reality.
Book Description
The need to reflect, contemplate, and concentrate is an essential counterpoint to the rush of daily life and its surface details. This has been recognized since ancient times, and meditation in one form or another has been practiced through the centuries and across cultures, for reasons both sacred and mundane. In the modern world the motivations are more likely to be personal than religious, but the same dynamics apply in calming and focusing the mind. A prerequisite is the right physical space-somewhere to help set one's frame of mind and to hold back the distractions of the outside. Specifically for the purpose of meditation, the examples are from sources as varied and fascinating as contemporary Japanese tea-ceremony rooms, minimalist Western architecture, idiosyncratic chapels, artists' and writers' workspaces, and portable tented structures. The principles are all applicable to modern living, whether permanent or temporary, at home or in beautiful natural settings. With its crisp photography and inventive design, Meditative Spaces will appeal to a variety of readers, from architecture enthusiasts to those with an interest in Japanese style to anyone looking to find-and celebrate-serenity in today's hectic and rapidly paced world.

A great guide to meditation for practicing Buddhists.......2004-05-26
I am glad to write a review on this extraordinary guide to meditation for practicing Buddhists. According to the sutras and the texts written by sages such as Nagarjuna and Asanga, it is impossible to attain enlightenment without the stablization in meditative states. Getting familiar with this book can prevent Buddhists from mistakenly treat faults in meditative states as signs of enlightenment. However, I must admit that this book is not for those who have no knowledge of Buddhism, or for those Buddhists who do not wish to attain a high state of meditation.
A fairly good text on Tibetan meditation training.......1999-04-12
This is a fairly nice and helpful book. It is divided into two parts. The first part is a fairly clear explanation of the basics of Mahayana Buddhist meditation training as taught in Tibetan traditions. The book is at its best here in the first half, presenting practical advice that one can easily put into practice in one's own meditative training. The second half is more academic, less practical, being a rather difficult to follow translation from the Tibetan of a commentary on a commentary on Maitreya's "Ornament for Clear Realization", dealing with the higher states of consciousness attained through meditative absorption. Those far enough along to understand what is being talked about are probably not going to need to read about it, but even if they do, a clearer explanation would probably be helpful. But still, the first half of the book justifies the purchase and reading of this book.
