Gary Zukav's American Book Award-winning The Dancing Wu Li Masters masterfully introduces the layman to quantum and particle physics, as well as Einstein's relativity theories. With a similar dose of amiable, easy-to-understand prose, Zukav guides readers into the spiritual realm in his bestselling The Seat of the Soul.
Zukav questions the Western model of the soul, alleging that the human species is in the midst of a great transformation, evolving from a species that pursues power based upon the perceptions of the five senses--"external power"--to one that pursues power based upon perceptions of the soul--"authentic power." He believes that humans are immortal souls first, physical beings second, and that once we become conscious of this transformation--once we align our personalities with our soul--we will stimulate our spiritual growth and become better people in the process. This insightful, lucid synthesis of modern psychology and new-age principles has been described as the "physics of the soul." Who better to explain such heady concepts than Gary Zukav?
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Ready to attain a higher level of understanding? Author Gary Zukav can help you evolve into a multisensory being, one who "values love more than the physical world." As shown in The Dancing Wu Li Masters, his bestselling exploration of physics, Zukav has a gift for presenting complex, even mind-boggling concepts in clearly worded and reasoned logic. In Seat of the Soul, he leads you on an inspirational and potentially life-changing journey into the seemingly intangible realm of the spirit. Reading in a calm, soothing voice he explains why increased sensory perception will mark the next phase of human evolution, how the power of choice can change your existence, and what you can do to infuse your life with more compassion, trust, and understanding. (Running time: 3 hours, 2 cassettes) --George Laney
Book Description
With the same extraordinary skill that he used to demystify scientific abstraction and the new physics, Gary Zukay, the award-winning author of The Dancing Wu Li Masters, here takes us on a brilliant and penetrating exploration of the new phase of evolution we have now entered.
With lucidity and elegance, Zukav explains that we are evolving from a species that pursues power based upon the perceptions of the five senses -- external power -- into a species that pursues authentic power -- power that is based upon the perceptions and values of the spirit. He shows how the pursuit of external power has produced our survival-of-the-fittest understanding of evolution, generated conflict between lovers, communities, and superpowers, and brought us to the edge of destruction.
Using his scientist's eye and philosopher's heart, Zukav shows how infusing the activities of life with reverence, compassion, and trust makes them come alive with meaning and purpose. He illustrates how the emerging values of the spirit are changing marriages into spiritual partnerships, psychology into spiritual psychology, and transforming our everyday lives. The Seat of the Soul describes the remarkable journey to the spirit that each of us is on.

The journey of the soul .......2007-10-11
The journey of the soul from the beginning of Creation to its eventually reuniting with the Maker is one of struggle with many lessons in life. This book gives a very deep understanding on why situations occur in life and how to cope with the inward struggle that we all face. In my many years on this plane and having read many Esoteric, Spiritual, and Religious books this and Understanding: Train of Thought are the best I have come across. Everybody, rather every body should read them.
Intuitive.......2007-10-02
In this book, Zukav's grammar is often appalling, especially toward the end of the book. Quite surprising for a national best seller. But the underlying insights and message expressed in this book are profoundly insightful and intuitive. Anyone with an ounce of spiritual awareness or psychic intuition will know that this book is clearly and wonderfully aligned with `What Is So'. This book is fantastic.
A spiritual journey in the realm of the soul!.......2007-09-29
This book was given to me as a gift some twenty years ago, and although it was highly recommended to me, I never read it. I have always been an avid reader, but I always found other titles more appealing--that is until I read `How to find God', by Deepak Chopra. Chopra mentions in his book that `The Seat of the Soul' is the best book he has read about the soul. Upon finishing Deepak's book, I plunged into `The Seat of the Soul', finally, and thankfully. I guess I need to send my friend a twenty years late thank you note.
There are many interesting concepts in the book.
According to the author, animals have a group soul. I found that to be extremely fascinating. For example, all horses share the same soul; all elephants share the same soul; all dolphins share the same soul; and so on. An animal does not have its own soul, but shares one soul with its entire specific species. There is only one soul for the hundreds of millions of cows in the world. This is why animals function on instincts.
Some group souls are higher spiritually than others. For example, the soul of dolphins is higher than all other sea creatures. In fact, many spiritual sects believe that a dolphin is the last stage of a soul before becoming reincarnated into a human being. So even in the animal kingdom, there are souls that are more evolved than others.
Every soul, whether human or animal, has a purpose. A dolphin, for example, has as a mission to bring beauty and love to the sea. But what if the soul cannot accomplish its mission or purpose? We have recently seen an increase in dead dolphins washing on beaches. Why is that? According to the author, dolphins are dying because they no longer can accomplish their purpose. It is not a mass suicide, but because dolphins are bringing onto themselves diseases that are killing them. Man is not respecting nature, and is killing the creatures of the sea, such as whales for example, at an alarming rate and for very selfish reasons. In other words, life forms are being massacred for profit! Other sea creatures are dying because of the pollution we are creating. As a result, the sea is no longer a peaceful, beautiful, and pure world, and the dolphins are no longer able to perform their duties as guardians of beauty and serenity to the sea. As a result, their soul has become diseased, and they are dying off.
The author uses the following analogy to describe disease and its effect on the soul. Imagine a piano and a piano player. If the piano is broken, it can be repaired. But no matter how perfect the piano is, if the player is sick, the sound or melody coming from the piano will be less than perfect. However, if the piano is less than perfect, with some faults in it that can't be repaired, but the player is in perfect spirits, the music played will be beautiful. Furthermore, if the piano breaks, the player can always fix it. But if the player breaks (so to speak), the piano cannot repair the player. In this scenario, the piano represents the body, and the player represents the soul. If our soul is healthy, we will always be healthy and we will be projecting positive energy. However, if our soul is diseased, we too will be diseased, and we will be projecting negative energy.
There are many reasons why our soul can become diseased. One of the main reasons is that we find no purpose to our life, or in other words, are unable to fulfill our soul's purpose. Disease and soul are therefore linked. Ever hear of miraculous healings, such as the paralyzed suddenly walking or terminally ill patients suddenly recovering? In their case, their soul was healed, which in turn healed their bodies. Now that's a really interesting concept. Instead of trying to find ways of healing the body, science must now concentrate on better understanding the soul and diagnosing and treating the soul, not the body. When the soul is healthy, the body is healthy.
Another powerful healer is Love (with a capital `L'). Love heals all. The soul is Love. In fact, when we die, we return to our state of pure Love. The soul cannot know anything but Love, and all its intentions are for Love. However, here on earth, our personality takes hold of us, and shapes our actions. At death, the soul and personality are separated, and the soul returns to its pure form.
It is really important that we, as individuals, aim to achieving the purpose of our soul. We will earn negative karma if we do not succeed. For example, a giving and caring person might have as a `soul purpose' the goal of making the world a better place by giving to the poor or by creating humanitarian organizations. However, such a person's personality might interfere with his soul's purpose, and instead of directing his kindness and caring to the world, he might direct it towards his loved ones only, which will be interpreted in the universe as a selfish act. This is the reason why our soul falls ill, and as a result, our body falls ill too.
Another interesting concept is the `Law of Attraction', which has become popular in the book `The Secret', by Rhonda Byrne. According to the law of attraction, the universe gives you what you want. For example, if you always feel anger, the universe will give you more anger. If you feel love, and are surrounded by loving people, the universe will give you more love. In other words, positive energy attracts positive energy, and negative energy attracts negative energy. By being positive all the time, you will be attracting positive people and situations around yourself. So be positive!
How does the author know all that about the soul? Is he making this all up? After all, writers can easily create imaginary and fascinating worlds. Take Tolkien as an example. Or is it all a play with words? For example, Chopra says in `The Book of Secrets', that on death, it is the body that leaves the soul, and not the other way around. Is this merely a play with words, or a truth? And how does the author know this?
This book is fascinating, but because the soul cannot be proven scientifically, it remains in the domain of speculation and faith. The soul, like God, depends on faith, and faith alone. But what splendid things can befall one in such a belief!
Read this book and be inspired, and get to know yourself...ergo your soul.
sooo worth it!.......2007-09-12
This book has changed my life and way of thinking. It is amazing, so positive and explanative. I have found my soul.
The Difference between 5-Sensory Refiews and Others.......2007-09-07
I'm on my 3rd reading of this enlightened book. All I want to say is that those that wrote negative reviews wrote from the perspective of the "5-sensory" human who must have physical "proof" of everything and is suspect of anything that cannot be detected by their 5 senses. I have come to believe, as Gary says, that the evolution of the human species has gone beyond that phase. As the pioneers of Quantum Physics have discovered, there is much, much more to the universe than can be "understood", measured and detected. Gary Z speaks from the knowing that only those who have been there can understand.

This collection of 280 thoughts by Gary Zukav (inspired by his bestseller The Seat of the Soul) is packaged like a one-a-day spiritual vitamin. The spiral-bound book can be propped open on a desktop or a kitchen counter. Readers simply flip the pages to find a quote to meditate on every day. Some of the quotes are true gems of wisdom, such as "The decisions that you make and the actions that you take upon the earth are the means by which you evolve" or "If you strike without compassion against the darkness, you yourself enter the darkness." Some offer more intellectual fodder than spiritual awareness, such as "Try looking at life as a beautifully well-organized dynamic." And only a few border on cliché, as in "No two people have the same reality." Nonetheless, Thoughts from the Seat of the Soul makes a great workplace or at-home companion--a daily reminder of why we're here and the true work we have before us. --Gail Hudson

Thoughts From the Seat of the Soul.......2007-03-08
This book is an excellent meditative companion for those who have read Gary Zukav's other books--"Seat of the Soul," "The Heart of the Soul," and "The Mind of the Soul" as well as "Soul Stories" and "The Dancing Wu Li Masters." I keep my copy of this book in my car where I can grab moments of mini-meditation when I am stuck in traffic or waiting for my daughter to get out of school.
The Best Thoughts.......2004-10-22
Gary Zukav has really put together a great compilation of "Seat of the Soul" into this book. It is inspiring, and helps bring me back to center. I recommend this to anyone that cold use some inspiration combined with wonderful concepts that will help you in your life.
Gary's thoughts are wonderful.......2001-08-03
Gary Zukav has taken his book, The Seat of the Soul, and pulled out the best parts, the parts you would have underlined or highlighted or marked with a star, and put them into a spiral bound, stank-alone book that I think is very useful to me. I flip open a page and let it sit on my desk here next to my computer and every now and then I glance over at it and think about it. It's well worth the price.
The Seat of the Soul.......2000-12-19
Gary's openness allowed me to be at ease looking within myself. Page 99 of the book let me know that I will always have assistance. I now know I will never be alone again. Every Human should read this book it brings all you have learned about God and the Universe into a place where you understand ...what was missing ....I now know it's going to be ok..Thanks Gary for giving me this tool.
All encompassing approach to Life.......2000-07-19
I have only just started reading this book and I already find it all encompassing. The teaching so far is significant for me and enlightening for my life path.

Idealistic...But...Not Realistic.......2006-04-18
I think the first thing, that one needs to relay about this book, is something Zukav says, at the very beginning. In the Forward, he in no uncertain terms lets the reader know that the thoughts he shares throughout this book, are how HE sees life, and he may not expect everyone to share his views. So after reading the entire book, I remembered those early words, and thought, what a clever way to say he has no proof of his theories on human behavior.
In "The Seat Of The Soul", Gary Zukav, presents some thought provoking ideas. He presents his theory that people are multi sensory beings, as opposed to 5 sensory. That we have a higher self, that not all of us can reach. Another is that we have souls, that live many life times. We have lessons to learn, and our soul will inhabit as many bodies as it takes to learn this lesson. It could be 5 life times or 50. He believes in universal love, in being reverent, and that love conquers and heals all. And further, there is nothing that love cannot heal. That we can empower ourselves by the choices we make.
These are all great ideals, and I think that Mr. Zukav has thought these things out and presented them for us to consider in a detailed manner. However wonderful it would be if everyone in the world, all the billions of people could love one another, the ideas are just not realistic. Who could possibly love Osama Bin-Laden? Yes, we make choices everyday, that lead out lives in one direction or another, and we should consciously make choices for the good. But there were times where Zukav seemed to me to contradict himself. He says, we should step in when we see a child being abused, but then he says, we should not send Armies to defend ourselves. This even though, I know he is not offering proof for any of his ideas, just did not make sense to me.
Toward the end of the book, he speaks of love. How Love can heal ANYTHING! I took quite offense to this part. My own son, had been diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma. I love him, as only a mother could, but it was not my love(alone), that has my son in remission for 3 years now. It was Chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant, and one heck of a great doctor.
This book would serve as a good look at how wonderful the world would be if everyone could act in the manner or strive for the qualities that Zukav describes. It's just not realistic. And what's more, I think it may be dangerous to anyone who may take it too seriously. I have a friend, who highly recommended this book to me. He swears by it, and lives by it. He tries to follows Zukav's ideals, and when he fails at it,gets angry and punishes himself for failing.
If you think you may be interested in this type of "self-help" book, it's probably worth the read for a few good ideas on trying to improve yourself. You may think about the ideas given and incoporate those the few doable ones into your life. However, I think the best bet would be a borrowed copy to check out.
For me, a good Yoga session, will bring me to a better level of consciousness, and it took one of those, to clear my head after this read....Laurie

Book Description
A new picture of the mind is emerging, and explanations now exist for what has so long seemed mysterious. This real understanding of how the biological brain works -- of how we work -- has generated a mood of excitement that is shared in a half-dozen intersecting disciplines. Philosopher Paul Churchland, who is widely known as a gifted teacher and expository writer, explains these scientific developments in a simple, authoritative, and pictorial fashion. He not only opens the door into the ongoing research of the neurobiological and connectionist communities but goes further, probing the social and moral dimensions of recent experimental results that assign consciousness to all but the very simplest forms of animals.
In a fast-paced, entertaining narrative, replete with examples and numerous explanatory illustrations, Churchland brings together an exceptionally broad range of intellectual issues. He summarizes new results from neuroscience and recent work with artificial neural networks that together suggest a unified set of answers to questions about how the brain actually works; how it sustains a thinking, feeling, dreaming self; and how it sustains a self-conscious person.
Churchland first explains the science -- the powerful role of vector coding in sensory representation and pattern recognition, artificial neural networks that imitate parts of the brain, recurrent networks, neural representation of the social world, and diagnostic technologies and therapies for the brain in trouble. He then explores the far-reaching consequences of the current neurocomputational understanding of mind for our philosophical convictions, and for our social, moral, legal, medical, and personal lives.
Churchland's wry wit and skillful teaching style are evident throughout. He introduces the remarkable representational power of a single human brain, for instance, via a captivating brain/World-Trade-Tower TV screen analogy. "Who can be watching this pixilated show?" Churchland queries; the answer is a provocative "no one." And he has included a folded stereoscopic viewer, attached to the inside back cover of the book, that readers can use to participate directly in several revealing experiments concerning stereo vision.

Customer Reviews:
Good pop-science (philosophy?) book on the topic.......2005-12-11
I've been a fan of the churchlands work for a while and someone got me this book for a gift (probably wouldn't have gotten it otherwise) and I decided to give it a read.
The content in the book is similar to the content of other books (ones published by his wife) such as "Neurophilosophy" but this book is much more accessible to lay philosophers/scientists.
If you have on interest in the philosophy of mind and are not the sort that is wrapped up in archaec metaphysics than this book should be of interest, it gives a decent picture of some of the research that has been done with neuro networks etc.
My only complaint is that the book is rather weak philosophically, but one can read the philosophically implications etc in Paul Churchland's articles (some of which are listed in the bibliography) or in Patricia Churchland's book "Neurophilosophy" which touches on the philosophical issues more (also has much more detail about the brain too).
I only wish I had more time to try and implement and experiment with neuro nets.
Exciting and Eminently Readable.......2002-08-31
I can't evaluate the neurobiology in the book since I'm no scientist, but Churchland's entirely accessible discussions of vector coding, feed-forward and recurrent networks, and the general landscape of contemporary neuroscience were exhilarating to read. They made me want to rush out and buy textbooks on the brain--a pretty impressive achievement, as far as I'm concerned.
Churchland's philosophical perspective, as anyone familiar with his work will expect, is thoroughly naturalistic. He has very little patience with anti-reductive arguments, and the three he discusses (Nagel's, Jackson's, and Searle's) receive straw-man treatments, though like everything else in the book, each treatment is good-natured and fairly humble. Readers already lacking tolerance for Searle will enjoy Churchland's caricature of The Rediscovery of Mind as a Betty Crocker cookbook.
Though his explicit discussion of anti-reductionism is sparse, the rest of Churchland's book serves as a demonstration of how much exciting work can be done if we simply ignore armchair naysaying. So I was more bothered by his lack of engagement with philosophers already on the elimintivist bandwagon. His discussion of Dennett, in particular, was cursory and frustrating. It seems to me that he conflates Dennett's distinct accounts of consciousness and content, needlessly (and in the relevant sense inaccurately) portraying Dennett as being a friend of robust human uniqueness.
But quibbles aside, the book is a fantastic read. Its optimistic view of the possibilities of computational neuroscience is infectious. Anyone without ideological blinders on will come away excited about the future of brain research.
The connectionist dream.......2002-03-14
This book is the hallmark of the connectionist dream -the belief that all aspects of mind, brain and consciousness can be explained by calling up neural network models-. Now the basic premise behind all this I will not contest. The brain is a large parallel distribuited processing network of neurons. But there is another big step from this to the statement that everything the mind is is a vector coding of a neural network. This is far too siplistic. Churchland of course realizes this, but continues to talk of connectionist models like neurosciences messiah.
This is perhaps only one aspect of Churchlands book, however. Overall, the book attempts to reconcile philosophy of mind with neuroscience, and it succeeds to an extent. In many parts the discussion falls into vector coding talk, but in many others it stellarily accounts for deep problems. It is a good introducion to neuroscience, neural networks and philosophy. Churchland does not present his own strong theories, but he does well in staying away from controversy. The best part of the book is in my opinion, the attempt to build a framework of the impacts neuroscience has in social and philosophical domains. This is not done often enough, and if it is, rarely with such lucidity and clarity.
Now I would have ceritanly liked much more speculation when it commes to consciousness, given the Churchland's contribuition to the literature. But he refrains from this and merely describes some other models, like Llinas thalamic oscillations, and is content in stating that it is at leas possible to see what an explanation for consciousness would look like from a neuroscience context.
The book is a grat read, and students of philosophy, neuroscience and cognitive science should enjoy it.
Good Intro to Neural Nets and Its Consequences.......2000-08-25
The book comes in two parts. The part one, which takes up more than a half of the whole book, explains what recurrent neural networks are and how those can be used to explain our own cognitive functions. This is generally a good introduction, I think. His style is casual, and we see certain smugness you normally expect at a college lecture, e.g., introducing certain authorities as his friends and presenting the picture his own daughter and the medial and lateral brain stereographs of his wife (Patricia Churchland). Like other popular science books, however, his description of neural nets is far from precise but let's not expect too much from a book of this kind. Unlike what some of our reviewers below suggested, he minimizes the use of scientific jargons and when he use such jargons he explains what those are. The first part was overall very much enjoyable to read.
You cannot expect it to be a fully philosophical book, though. His new epistemological framework arises from this newest perspective the theory of neural networks has created. To know what neural nets are is immensely important. Let's remind ourselves of a classic work in cognitive science and neurobiology. It's David Marr's _Vision_. There Marr expresses the view that physical (hardware) implementation is quite irrelevant. Now we know this is not true. To understand why this is so one may have to consult the part one.
The problem area is the part two. The chapter 11 was full of hopes and lots of blah-blah-blah's that bore you to hell. What's interesting, and makes you slightly angry, is his explanation of consciousness. Perhaps that is because Churchland's argument seem amazingly simple. But, to think about it, it has to be simple. Otherwise it cannot be a reduction. If you want to argue against reductionism, you need to bring up some form of dualism. In fact, this is what Searle does. Searle's arguments are not directed agains neural networks. His favorate scapegoat is symbolic computation. But this is something researchers have done away with a long ago. I personally think Searle never really understood what neural nets are.
What's not really satisfactory are these: Some will find he never really defeated Nagel and Jackson. I should agree with those who think so. If ever he did, his argument lacked logical clearity or I am very dumb. He is not successful in constructing a model of consciousness, either. The problem is, he thinks he is. Like Newton did, and Euclid earlier, he tries to create a set of descriptive axioms to come to grip with consciousness. But unlike Euclid, Netwon, and Einstein (remember his two postulates), some of his axioms require a first-person perspective. (ref. pp. 213-214) For example, to verify that consciousness disappears in deep sleep, somebody obviously has to go to bed. However imprecise, MEG maybe used to detect conscious activities in a live brain. But there exists no 3rd-person method to verify consciousness is a single unified experience. Churchland has been successful in explaining a lot but I think we still have a long way to go. And his descriptive theory is not adequate.
Plus, there is a misprint in page 230 of the softcover edition. The "o%cial" should be read "official".
Regretfully Disappointed.......2000-06-08
Churchland is a great philosopher who has made many significant contributions to the study of the mind. Unfortunately, most of those contributions lie in his papers, other books, and works co-authored with his wife, Patricia Churchland. "The Engine of Reason..." is aimed for the 'popular science' crowd, and it is a wonderful introduction to vector coding and some introductory neuroscience. But it is surprisingly weak in philosophical arguments. It really reads like a light, scientific textbook, and the bulk of it consists of oversimplified explanations which rely too heavily on scientific findings that aren't thoroughly established yet. He is extremely unfair towards philosophers who aren't eliminative materialists (like Searle, Nagel, etc.), and he spends literally no time refuting their arguments. Instead he bullies the reader into believing that the above writers must hold some antiquated Cartesian view which relies too heavily on intuition. He knows he has science on his side and is rather insulting towards philosophers, making them look like idiotic armchair scientists. While unfortunately philosophers are notorious for that fault, they also ask some pretty good questions and make you think. Churchland does neither in this book. This book is a real good starter for vector coding and neuroscience. But for 'popular science' that's scientific but extremely philosophical, I haven't found anything yet that beats Daniel Dennett's Consciousness Explained. For a good refutation of Searle, Nagel and the rest, read their own works and don't just listen to the brief overview Churchland gives.

Book Description
From the clash of steel to the rumble of tanks, the sights and sounds of war have inspired poets of every nation since conflict was invented. In this timely new anthology, respected poet and historian Angus Calder and anti-war activist Beth Junor have drawn together a representation of war poetry from nations and cultures across the globe. Shared experience and powerful imagery combine to give this collection of poems an immediacy and poignancy that illustrate both the borror and the humanity that are distilled by the events that humankind calls war.

Learning to Fly.......2006-05-25
This book is an encouraging tool to help you look deep within and change yourself for the better. It is like talking with a friend about life - Tess gives examples from her own life, even using names of family and friends, which makes the book personal. While she gives advice, it is never preachy. She is encouraging in tips to happiness. The quotes are ones that I will re-read many times. There was also much to highlight of Tess' own words. Life is happiest when we are living from our soul. I found this book so helpful and encouraging that I bought it for my closest friends. This book will help you learn how to fly.
