This is the only exhaustive concordance based on the New International Version of the Bible; it gives complete access to every word of the NIV text as well as to the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek from which the NIV was translated.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best!.......2007-05-08

They took James Strong's classic and computer verified the findings. Best match for the KJV for serious bible students.

2 out of 5 stars accurate - not always.......2006-09-30

The point when using any reference book is to expand on understanding and to get the true sense of the subject under study. This "Strongest" Strong's concordance falls short of this, as it apparently uses personal bias in its definitions (and comments), i.e. cross - 'stauros - cross, cross'. Research is for accurate knowledge. I was very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Only Concordance Needed!.......2006-02-03

If you are a fan of the NIV Bible then this is the best book to have along with it. This exhaustive concordance has everything you need to study the words in the NIV bible. It includes the Hebrew and Greek dictionaries. This is a must have book for your bible study needs!

4 out of 5 stars Worth the price if you use NIV translation........2005-10-18

The Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek dictionaries are done very well, compared to the old Strong's Concordance I have.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource to your biblical library.......2007-09-18

Keep in mind that this review is written by a man who doesn't care for the NIV translation. However, I found that: the history, archaeological facts, maps, archaeological photographs (almost 500), NIV translation, and cultural background make this a logical addition to my resource library. The book I have comes with a CD that includes the NIV translation, photographs and maps (I haven't looked at it yet). But even if this bible didn't come with a CD it would be well worth the money I paid for it. I wouldn't say it's as comprehensive as: a bible handbook, manners and customs reference, bible atlas, or concordance. However, it does have aspects of those resources in one volume. I feel this is a solid reference text that should be supported with other reference materials. And if your partial to the NIV translation this is solid choice for a study bible in my humble opinion. God Bless You.

4 out of 5 stars Typeface Concern.......2007-09-16

This was purchased as a gift. It was well received. The CD that was included made it possible to view and enjoy pictures in a larger format.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Bible.......2007-09-03

The Archaeological Study Bible is an excellent resource for students of the Bible. It provides tremendous insight into the life and thinking of those who lived during biblical times giving us a background to better understand the Bible.

5 out of 5 stars Changing Fiction to Fact .......2007-09-03

Among other things, the Bible is also a history book. This archeological review printed for reading with the Bible to make readily
available factual information adds "life" to the Bible and should aid in discouraging any skeptics about the truths contained therein.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Indexed Amplified Bible.......2007-08-23

if you want not only a very accurate translation of the bible but one that is a pleasure to own and is "built to last" then you are going to be hard pressed to better this version

4 out of 5 stars Great bible.......2007-06-17

I bought this bible (actually I got it new on ebay for 40.00..check there first) and I love the translation. I like knowing I'm reading the meanings of the original wording. It's a bit of a challenge to use for memorizing, and I often use an NIV for that. The only thing I don't really like about this bible is the binding. It's bonded leather, but seems on the flimsy/weak side to me, although not so bad that I wouldn't buy it again. It would be great if it came in a quality leather binding...maybe it does, but I haven't seen it. Otherwise maybe a hardback binding would be more practical for carrying around.

5 out of 5 stars enlightening.......2007-06-09

The Amplified Bible is a wonderful help with portions of other translations that are vague or confusing. While I prefer the KJV for my primary bible, I read with it on one hand and the Amplified on the other. Highly recommend it to any and all. The product is well bound, a wonderful buy. Orissie

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!!.......2007-05-06

If you like to get more from your Bible study, you NEED this tool. You get so much more of what the writer's were saying and it takes your devotions to a whole other level. You can definitely get into the "meat" of God's word this way and feel confident that you are getting the accurate message being conveyed.

4 out of 5 stars THIS is NOT Leather.......2007-02-22

This says leather bound, when it is actually bonded leather (thin leather attached to paper) and not genuine leather binding. I wrote Amazon and they acknowledged the mistake but I see it has not been corrected. This is an exceptional translation, and not a bad price for even bonded leather but I just wanted others to be aware of what they were getting when ordering it.

5 out of 5 stars excellent authoritative reference.......2007-04-11

I first used this set at Duke U. in 1961. Over the years since then, the results of new research and new thought have been added. It remains one of the better Biblical study tools. And it is quite readable.

The price I paid was substantially below the publisher's price.

5 out of 5 stars Expensive but invaluable Bible commentary.......2007-02-28

The NIB commentary (in twelve volumes or CD-ROM) is basically an extremely comprehensive historical-critical commentary on the entire Bible, including all the books of the OT including the apocryphal books, and also the entire New Testament. The commentary brings together dozens of biblical scholars from different Christian confessions, ranging from Evangelical and Pentecostal Christians to Anglican, Catholic and Orthodox scholars. The series also includes a number of essays on various academic and technical points, ranging from hermenutical theories of Biblical interpretation to feminist questions about biblical interpretation and so on.

While at times the overly-liberal agenda of some of the commentators can get a bit tiresome, overall the quality of the commentary is outstanding from both a theological and scholarly perspective, and incorporates the most up to date knowledge of the historical and cultural context of the scripture as well as useful reflections on how it can be applied to modern-day life.

The main drawback of this series is its heavy expense, which would put it out of reach of many individual buyers, though in my experience this set is quite easily found in most good university theology libraries, catechist resource centres, and in many parish libraries. Along with the Jerome Bible commentary and a good study Bible, this set in my view is essential reading for any priest, seminarian, theologian or theology student, and also any lay Christian interested in deeping their own faith or in a role where scriptural study or interpretation is required, including Ministry leaders, Bible Study Group leaders, RCIA team leaders and members, or catechists in any Christian denomination. If you have a difficult or obscure point in scripture and are uncertain, these volumes certainly help to get the context and message right, along with useful hints and reflections which would be useful in making a homily or sermon.

4 out of 5 stars Could have better layout.......2006-11-10

The amount and quality of information is incredible. But it's pretty hard to read any significant amount of the actual biblical text because they break it up every few verses for commentary and reflection.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, But Expensive, Resource...........2005-12-22

.... and it takes up a whole shelf in my library....

I would like to give this 4 1/2 stars, but five is too many.

This is the best Bible commentary I have used. It is not constrained by length as so many are. The dual NIV/NRSV is plus, and of course I read my NJB along with it.

I absolutely love the depth of analysis, particularly of the OT Hebrew (I have yet to use this much in the NT, having just started with the set a few months ago). Allowing the author a "personal reflections" section is a nice plus. Even when I don't agree with the reflection, it stirs good internal debate, and is a source of discussion questions for adult Sunday School.

The inclusion of the Dueterocanonicals is also welcome as these are unfortunately missing from most Protestant commentaries.

The one negative is that some of the commentary is a little liberal (in some cases, even feminist - e.g., Phyllis Trible) for me, but it does nicely balance out the more conservative International Bible Encyclopedia and the International Bible Commentary. Overall though, as the next reviewer points out, the scholars involved in NIB are from a range of theological camps.

This work is also available on CD for a little less, but in the end I decided I like hard copy better.

This was a LOT of work and all those involved in producing it are to be praised for their efforts!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2000-05-02

Of course dictionaries aren't usually meant to be read through like novels. Even though I haven't done that with this book, I would if I had the time. This is a must have for any student of the Word of God. In addition to the definitions, the book also gives good insight on the topics, placing them in their historical context. Zondervan has done it again!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding.......2007-09-22

This book is written without any apologies from the perspective of an true orthodox Christian. Archer's academic credibility is impeccable and thankfully he left this book behind so a new generation could defend the biblical worldview aggressively.

4 out of 5 stars Atheists are Funny!.......2006-01-15

Notice that the Atheist below claimed that Archer is illogical when in fact all the "reviewer" did was throw out illogical ad hominems left and right. Where was the logical argument? It wasn't there. Just a bunch of strawmen and moral judgments on the Bible and Christianity. One must wonder where one gets absolute moral judgments about the Bible being "wrong" when one doesn't believe in an absolute source of those moral judgments? I guess atheists are better at living with their errant contradictions than they are allowing scholars like Archer (Harvard educated in his BA, MA and PhD) to explain misunderstandings made by our cultural and linguistic distance from the text. O well, I guess it's just in one ear and out the other of those who want to keep their precious, licentious religion in tact.
For anyone who wants to begin to look at what are considered "discrepencies" in the Bible, this is one of the many sources that will aid you to do more than mock what you don't understand from afar.

5 out of 5 stars Once you've actually read the Bible..........2004-03-19

This volume is a good addition to the Biblical expositor's reference library. But the first step is to become familiar with the Bible by actually having spent time reading and studying it. Many questions become answered once you understand the entire Bible in context. Then reference books such as this become useful in understanding cultural references, difficulties in the English translations of the original autographs, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Generally excellent refutation of biblioskeptics.......2002-05-03

The author has an encyclopedic knowledge of Biblical languages and culture, and his book is most informative about a wide range of topics. Archer is also a trained lawyer, so can cut through the illogicality and special pleading of the arguments for "contradictions". By comparison, among those who argue for contradictions are such blatantly unqualified misotheists such as Barker, Ingersoll, McKinsey and Paine who haven't a clue about the original languages or culture, and are blatantly chronologically chauvinistic.

One important consideration in the Gospels is what the New Testament scholar N.T. (Tom) Wright pointed out, that most of the things Jesus said, he most likely said many times, and with many minor variations.

I didn't give this book five stars, because Archer is unnecessarily intimidated by old-Earth propaganda, but does believe in a global Flood that actually wipes out alleged geological evidence for age. But since this occupies only a small fraction of the book which is otherwise excellent, only a one-star deduction is warranted.

1 out of 5 stars Unnecessary gimmick.......2007-10-02

I feel bad giving a Bible a 1-star review, but I think it's important to draw attention to some faults in this particular version.

"The Bible in 90 Days" simply takes the number of pages in the entire Bible and divides them into 90 daily readings. At the top of every 12th page is simply a box marking the start of the next day's reading -- which falls in the middle of a verse quite often. You don't need to buy a new Bible for this -- just divide the # of pages in your edition by 90 and read that many each day!

This edition also doesn't include any study helps to help make the daily readings understandable.

I've helped hundreds of people read thru the entire Bible, and many have told me that they found some Old Testament sections very hard to get thru (and I agree for myself!). Books like Numbers can be hard to read -- especially if asked to read chapter after chapter without explanation. "The Bible in 90 Days" makes this error -- 12 pages of Leviticus is a lot harder for most people to read than 12 pages of Matthew. A better approach for most people is to read a bit of the Old Testament and a bit of the New Testament each day. This not only holds the reader's interest, but also gives them a better comprehensive view of Scripture, understanding how Old & New Testaments work together.

If you don't already own a Bible then maybe there's merit to buying this one to motivate you to start reading -- but you might be better off spending your money on another edition with study helps. Otherwise, this just seems like an unnecessary gimmick.

4 out of 5 stars A Challenge Worth Taking.......2007-07-16

The Bible in 90 Days is an excellent reading plan for someone who has read most or all of the Bible before. By reading 12 pages each day you will begin to see the Bible in a new light. It becomes God's story rather than man's story. You will see that from the beginning God had a plan to restore us to Himself.
This reading plan is prefect for someone who has been following Jesus for years and wants to see the Bible in a fresh way. I would not, however, recommend it to someone who is new to the Christian faith or just checking it out.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible in 90 Days: Cover to Cover in 12 Pages a Day.......2007-03-09

The BEST purchase I have made in a long time. I have always wanted to read the Bible from front to back and this Bible makes it so easy to do just that. It gives you starting points and ending points. The NIV version is very easy to understand. I recommend it for the first time reader or the experienced.

4 out of 5 stars 90 days Bible.......2007-02-15

I have been keeping up with my daily reading. I love the large print of this Bible and am learning so much from the Old Testament. I would recommend this method of reading the Bible to anyone. I use a highlighter as I read to mark things that I might want to study further.

5 out of 5 stars ENJOYABLE.......2007-01-12

Easy to read and to understand. I find myself reading it more like a novel and sharing with my friends as if it were a soap opera.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and balanced.......2007-10-11

Moo is officially classed as a dispensationalist, however, it is known that he disagrees with a lot of traditional dispensational thought, as he is more progressive than most. For one, he is post tribulational in end time thinking, and believes in the 'now and the not yet' of the Kingdom. This book clearly shows that.
I am not a dispensationalist at all and yet I was amazed at the clarity and balanced thinking of this commentator. As he, himself states - he believes more in 'fullfillment' theology. And that's where this book is at especially in the murkey waters of ch 9, 10 and 11.
If he was as dispensational as one reveiwer above says, then Fee or the NIC committee would not have had him, as the niether the series or Fee are at all dispensational.
What Moo does do is bring traditional reformed / replacement thought toward a more Christocentric understanding of Israel as a people, who together with gentiles form God's one fulfillment people, and yet he also deals with the traditional dispensational thought that says Israel are God's earthly people and the Church His heavenly people ( or less in some cases).
I think Moo deserves credit for this book - it is outstanding, and will hopefully clear up a lot of the terrible dispensational mess in the West, and bring Christocentric fulfillment views rather than dual covenant views into people's understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2007-08-08

Dougas J. Moo has written the greatest one-volume commentary on the Book of Romans!

Two other books by Moo on Romans are also helpful:
1. Encountering the Book of Romans: A Theological Survey (Encountering Biblical Studies)
2. Romans: The Niv Application Commentary: From Biblical Text to Contemporary Life

4 out of 5 stars John th Baptist.......2007-07-12

Moo's commentary is good not excellent. I find he tends to chase rabbits. I would have prefered to have read more of his own thoughts on the verses as to so many different opinions of others. Over all he has done a good job, but I would not say his commentary is better than Hodge or Cranfield or some of the other older commentaries on Romans.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-02-07

When studying the book of Romans, an student of the Bible who works with the Original Languages would be remiss to leave this Commentary out of their consultations. Moo displays his competency in both the language and the contemporary ideas surrounding commonly disagreed-upon passages. This commentary used along with Schreiner's work on Romans make a powerful tag-team.

1 out of 5 stars This would be an excellent commentary were it not for the.......2006-06-29

fact that, despite a very admirable attempt, the author completely misunderstands what Paul was actually saying in Romans. The confusion arises from Martin Luther's distortion of the phrase 'rightousness of God' in Romans 1:17 and from reading scripture from an egocentric perspective rather than considering the original historic context. Martin Luther understood the phrase 'righteousness of God' to refer to God's righteousness which he somehow 'imputes' into a person. Without room for an exhaustive explanation, suffice it to say that Martin Luther was wrong.

The 'righteousness of God' referred to in 1:17 refers to God's determination to fulfill the covenant He had with the Jews through Abraham. The Jews had always believed that two things set them apart as God's people: 1) descent from Abraham (ethnicity) and 2) works of Torah (circumcision, sabbath observance, food laws, etc.) For such Jews, the gospel challenged what they had always believed and called into question God's justice. Paul defends God's righteousness by undercutting both their ethnic boast and their boast in 'works of Torah' and by showing how God had been faithful to the covenant by sending our glorious savior Jesus Christ. The predominant Jewish belief regarding the final judgement was that God would vindicate the Jews up against the evil gentiles (as in a great law court setting). Paul's argument through chapter three places Jews as well as Gentiles in the defendants chair in need of vindication.

Stunningly, rather than help the Jews, the effect of Torah was to actually give them the knowledge of sin (3:20), serve as a basis of God's wrath against them (4:15), and concentrate sin within Israel (5:20). Apart from Torah Jesus was displayed as the answer to how God would redeem humanity and creation (3:20-26). Read in context, in chapter 7 Paul sets forth the delimma of the Jews under Torah. Sin had hijacked the law, enticing them to sin, thus resulting in death, preventing Torah's intent to give life. Chapter seven actually vindicates the 'ego' and the Torah. The solution is presented in Chapter 8. God sent Jesus to be Israel's representative to die on the cross where he condemned SIN in the flesh. Sin had been the true culprit all along.

With the help of the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit, the Torah thus accomplished it's goal or end (telos) of giving life (10:4) for all who have faith in Jesus Christ. This fulfilled God's purpose for the covenant made with Abraham resulting in a single worldwide family defined, not by 'works of Torah' but by faith in Jesus Christ. God had been faithful to the covenant but in a way never expected by the average Jew. Paradoxically, this itself was a fulfillment of the law (Hab.2:4) 'the just shall live by faith'.

If you really want to understand Romans, it is my prayer that you will seriously consider purchasing N.T. Wright's commentary on Romans in the New Interpreter's Bible: Acts - 1 Corinthians (Volume 10). God bless you in your quest to know him better.

The NIV study Bible is as good as it gets. The NIV translation is accurate and readable. The study notes were written by a team of scholars representing various traditions in evangelical faith. The notes greatly help the average reader understand what the original intent of the author was. I highly recommend this Bible for anyone wanting to understand the Bible.

I bought this Bible for my personal study and it is a great resource. I enjoy reading the study information they provide as it gives you a deeper look into the times and customs as well as geography. It can be a little distracting though as sometimes I find myself reading the supplemental information more that I am reading the text of the Bible itself. The leather is not as soft as I thought it would be and when I received it one of the pages had been cut oddly at the factory. Overall a good product.
