This is a beautifully written and captivating look at the lives of strong women who helped change the course of American history. I was extremely impressed by Karenna Gore Schiff's writing ability . All of the women profiled in this book are fascinating Americans and most of them are long overdue for this kind of a tribute. Schiff truly did her research and I was also interested in the information she shared about the strong women in her family--most notably her grandmothers. She dedicates the book to them.

I read about this book in the newspaper and bought it immediately as a birthday present for my daughter. When it came I started to read it and liked it very much. I didn't want to read the whole thing because I think it needed to be brand new for a gift.

I can think of no finer artist to illustrate the Message than Thomas Kinkade! This magnificent volume is generously filled with his heart warming illustrations. Appropriately, his talent with a brush conveys his ability to capture the light and illuminate from within. This is a wonderful family bible! What a value! It is beautifully constructed and the pages have gorgeous artwork by Thomas Kincaid. The style of the writing is easily understandable, even by children. There are special "family memory" sections on special events and even difficult ones, and how the family got through them together. I gave one of these bibles to my daughter and son-in-law as part of their wedding presents, and when my other daughter saw the bible, she asked for one too. I would

Not quite what I'd expected, but great anyway.......2007-04-21
I wouldn't have thought a book about stoves would be such interesting reading, but this really is a good book. I bought it in hopes that I'd be able to attempt to build a stove myself. That did not happen, in fact I'm not even sure what type of stove I'd like. However, the book has increased my faith in a wood stove keeping my home comfortable, and be environmentally sound. I liked the writing style, which is pretty rare for a book of this type. There were times when I couldn't put it down. Honestly, I was on this page again to sell my book, but now I find I'm not ready to let it go, so I'm writing a review instead.
While it is old and could probably be updated, the art of the wood stove is also old, so much of the most valuable information may be old as well. Certainly, history has a lot of lessons to teach us about masonry stoves. Also, the book talks about past mistakes of masonry stoves, so if you're thinking about building your own, this would be good reading.

As mentioned, the book is not a modern day catalog, but a historical look at masonry stoves dating back to the first harvesting of fire by humans. Fascinating look at the historical developments, especially around the middle ages
to the nineteenth centtury. Also includes many examples from non-western cultures. Many informative diagrams and photos portraying the myriad styles. Appropriate for the uninitiated.

After reading through this book I was left somewhat disapointed. What is covered in the book is well written, but the publication date was nearly 20 yrs ago, and the book needs updating. More actual pictures of masonry heaters and less old pictures would be helpful. One is better off visiting the masonry heater association

This book is an excellent book from the historical point of view. The book is full of excellent illustrations as well as B&W photogaphs. I do wish their had been better photos as well as some color photos as well. This is a great book and really teaches you the details of the functionality of Masonry Stoves.
Lacking current examples and photos.......2005-07-08
This book has a very deep history of heating with wood and even delves into the history of fire. I too was very disappointed to realize that there were very few photographs. And, equally disappointing was a lack of discussion of modern day masonry stoves. There wasn't even any description or anything about the big beautiful masonry stove that is pictured on the cover.
Its been helpful and informative in that I have now learned just how these stoves work and a bit of how they do not work.

Disappointing, but still worth a look.......2003-11-19
I was disappointed in this book because, for the most part, it did not reflect my experience as a CASA volunteer.
The cases highlighted in this book seem to all have dramatic circumstances and successful outcomes. Maybe those cases make a better read, but I'm not sure they are typical.
More often CASA volunteers labor along, uncertain that their efforts are making any difference. We work with children who are so profoundly needy that one's efforts can seem like spit in the ocean. I was looking for a story about the faith it takes to keep going, to believe in what you're doing, even when the results that aren't apparent. I was looking for a story about the joy of the small successes that stoke the fire of that faith enough to keep laboring on.
These stories are primarily factual accounts of the casework without much emotion. The untold story is the powerful personal transformation that happens in the lives of CASA volunteers. This work changes your outlook and your life in ways that reach far beyond the circumstances of the case.
My disappointment aside, I did enjoy this book simply because there's so little written about the CASA program. The stories are inspiring and do accurately portray the goals of this program.

Down-to-Earth and Heartfelt.......2001-12-28
I'm featured in the collection of fifteen interviews with volunteers who work with abused and neglected children, so I'm biased in its favor. But I think it should be required reading for politicians and state legislators, those who cut budgets for foster care and mental health services for children. Parents, teachers, and anyone concerned about social services in their communities, and especially those who might be interested in volunteering will find this book interesting. It's easy to read, comes with drawings and poems by some of the featured children, and gives an excellent sense of the kinds of experiences one has as a court-appointed special advocate/guardian ad litem volunteer. Buy it and support the program. Better still, volunteer with your local group and help a child.

This is book is the biggest peice of crap I have ever read in my life. I know Mary Marr personally and she is a religious hyprocrite. She hurts many people and then pretends like she is "a Christian".

Mary Marr's book is a complete waste of money and time. It does not address issues in which she indicates. From my vantage point, it made absolutely no sense at all. I do not think the principles in this book could be used in real life and you should not force people to be converted to Christianity. Instead of buying this book, donate to charity to really convert people. Show people your faith in doing onto others.

I was interested in readings books about how to spread God's Word. I had a desire to learn about spreading the Word to minority groups. Lighting the Way seemed superficial and was filled with chocolate frosting that did not portray the reality of the world. My suggestion is that Mary L. Marr visit a third world country and help those in need while trying to spread the Word.
