Customer Reviews:
Great for the thinking Coach.......2002-02-22
I got this book just as I was about to coach a new teeball team and found its insight very helpful. Not a book about what drills to use but about motivation, handling people and protecting peoples love of the sport. More cerebral than I would expect in a coaching book. I used much of the material in my business career. Now I am starting his next book, "Shooting in the Dark".
Turn your coaching career around like this book turned mine........1999-07-11
I coach volleyball in grade school and junior high school, and I usually get the "B teams" (the leftovers who are not as talented as the girls on the "A" team.) Therefore, if there ever was a crying need for a book on how to coach these types of athletes, this book more than served its purpose for me. Actually, this book had a positive effect on me since it saved my coaching career.
Don't get me wrong, though, this book will turn around any coach's career whether he has an A or a B team. I coached a group of 13 and 14 year old softball players the year that I purchased this book. At the beginning of the season, the only team these girls could beat was themselves; in fact, that was primarily the reason they were losing was the fact that they were beating themselves! Well, after one mediocre game, I sat the girls down on the bench and instead of reading them the riot act, I took to heart a suggestion by the author. I emphasized all the positive aspects of the game they played just to show these girls that they were capable of doing some positive things. I did this after each game from then on, win or lose. Wouldn't you know it, these same rag tag girls lost the last the last game of the season: the city championship game by one run (to a team that annihilated them by 12 runs in the first game of that season.) This was an example of positive coaching, and I've used everything in this book to my advantage to become a successful POSITIVE coach. Thanks Mr. Thompson for turning my career around!
HS Coach Reviewer - Please Stay in MI and Out of VA.......1999-06-30
I don't doubt for a minute that you completely missed the theme and messages of this book - you expose your true colors and attitudes towards kids with your "cross-eyed, overweight child" and "fat, blind kid" pejoratives. "Players must understand their skill level limits them" - I can hear you now getting that message (loudly, clearly and strongly, no doubt to toughen them up for the "real world" - yeah, right) across to young adults on a daily basis. What magic you must weave in the lives of these young people. If the generalizations fit, go ahead and wear them - clearly you have no use for any child that isn't contributing to that bottom line (for you) - WIN. Rest easy that your opinion is the dominant one in the youth coaching ranks, however - and thus the need for this book.
An important guide for influencing kids in sports........1999-04-23
The reader from Trenton, Michigan missed the point of this book. Readers of that review should carefully consider the source and its use of hateful ideas and language. This is an excellent book for amateur coaches of kids. It teaches how to interact with kids and how to motivate them to do their best without resorting to screaming and put-downs. If you are a coach or parent, this will be both fun to read and useful to learn from.
A must-read in the politcally-correct era of youth sports.......1999-04-10
As a high school coach for over ten years, I have always looked for new and unique ways to motivate my players. I hoped that this book would generate fresh, creative alternatives. Instead, I was served a 400-page liberal athletic manifesto. Don't get me wrong; I believe in utilizing positive motivational strategies and teaching techniques with my players. If like me, you believe that winning is actually an important aspect of athletic competition, you will find yourself at odds with the author from the introduction. Perhaps in the youth leagues, rules demanding equal playing time that foster an "everyone is a star" attitude are effective. At the higher levels, these ideas become highly ineffectual (too many chiefs and not enough indians). Eventually, players must understand that their skill level (or lack thereof) limits them to a lesser role as a reserve or practice player. While the author offers sound ideas for communicating with players, the techniques are just another by-product of sixties liberalism run amuck. I agree with the author that many children have enjoyed a less-than-successful athletic career based on poor coaching; and I'm sure I could have been a surgeon if only my Cub Scout den mother was better with her pocketknife. The truth of the matter is that most kids don't become good or great athletes because they aren't willing to put in the time and effort necessary to do so (while approaching every aspect of life in pretty much the same fashion). In my experience, most of the problems in youth athletics are caused by adults! The kids know who to pick; it's the adult looking to create "fairness" for the cross-eyed, overweight child who can't tie shoes without sustaining a career-ending injury that creates the problem - first by demanding equal opportunity, second by placing the child in a situation where there is little chance for success. When the fat, blind kid struggles and feels like a failure, this is the coaches' fault? It is if you believe in Jim Thompson's doctrine. I'll admit there are some good ideas for dealing with players on an interpersonal level. P.S. Don't let the Foreward by Phil Jackson fool you! (How many titles did his positive coaching win without Michael Jordan?)

Book Description
From the moment they are born, children experience an unfortunate value system that reserves respect and esteem for a select few. Those who fail to measure up end up resigning themselves to a lifetime of feeling inadequate and inferior. Over the past twenty-five years, more than a million parents and teachers have benefited from Dr. James Dobson's insightful counsel in his classic Hide and Seek. Now revised and updated, and in paperback, this book provides a new generation of parents with practical pointers for raising self-confident, healthy children.
Customer Reviews:
a very interesting read ...........2006-08-04
The book starts with a somewhat surprising beginning which grabbed my attention early. After that, the first couple of chapters talk about the importance of confidence and how it can be eroded over time. After Chapter 3, the book picks up and gives some interesting insight into building confidence. There were some religious references that I could do without. Other then that this book is a must read if you have children.
Self Esteem.......2006-02-27
Excellent Book, one every parent and/or parent-to-be should read! Timely delivery and in excellent condition!
One of the best child-rearing books available.......2003-10-16
Dr. Dobson does an excellent job of getting across the basics of child psychology and how they relate to self-esteem, without either talking over the readers' heads or talking down to them. He describes some of the ways that parents can untentionally weaken their children's self-esteem and many ways to prevent or remedy that situation, ultimately giving the child a self-image that is based on inherent worth rather than abilities, attractiveness, possessions or performance. This book is highly recommended to anyone who is disappointed in the prevailing current views on how to build a child's self-esteem, and wants to try a better way--God's way.

Book Description
Self-esteem is either the crippler or the completer of the marriage relationship, says Dennis Rainey. From their personal and seminar experiences with thousands of couples, Dennis and Barbara Rainey have found that one of the most vital, yet most often missing, ingredients in a marriage today is the diligent effort on the part of each spouse to build the other's self-esteem.
Customer Reviews:
Married to a new man.......2000-04-28
This was the greatest wedding gift that I was given. I am really learning my husbands language. It gives specific advice on how to build your husband up in his role as leader. It's principles are biblically sound and backed with scripture. An excellent source for wives on building your husband into the leader you always knew he was. This book is an awesome tool to get your marriage back on the right track with your husband feeling confident as the head of the wife/household.
Fairly good discussion guide for Christian married couples........1997-12-30
This is the Group Leader's Guide which contains the participant study guide plus discussion leader notes. This series of lessons is aimed at Christian married couples. The back cover starts... Why marriage is God's workshop for self-esteem. Part of God's plan for marriage is for you to help your mate become all that He intended. While that may sound like a big job, all it takes is letting your mate know that you accept them and are committed to meeting their needs. ... A large part of this book is examining Biblical teachings in light of the marriage relationship and the marriage partners' personal faith. The copyright page says "FamilyLife is a part of Campus Crusade for Christ International, an evangelical Christian organization founded in 1951 by Bill Bright. FamilyLife was started in 1976 to help fulfill the Great Commission by strengthening marriages and families and then equipping them to go to the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ." If your personal beliefs do not coincide with the evangelical approach, you may find some material to be wrong or offensive. Given this context, this course seems to be fairly good.

Not just for parents.......2001-06-02
I was required recently to read this book for a youth ministry class I'm taking to prepare me for an internship. While the book is geared towards parents of younger children, much of the same material may be applied to youth ministry. Also, I find that much of it SHOULD be applied in my own daily life. This book offers great insight into how children develope and I would encourage everyone to read, no matter what your situation is.
Biblical vision and values for our children.......1999-10-18
ENOUGH of this "passive parenting" many adults hold so dear to their hearts! This book holds strong and solid advice for parents to be a formative part of their child's life by exercising love, understanding, and discipline. It is an incredible book and an easy two-day read. Isaiah 54:13 conveys the ultimate goal and message of this book, "All thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children". It reaffirmed for me biblical values for raising my child to please the Lord by preserving the delicate spirit within. You will absolutely fall in love with this book and begin your search for the next Dr. Dobson book...as I am!
A great preview into building your childs self esteem!.......1999-06-22
Upon strong recommendation from my cousin I read Hide or Seek. I have read many books on raising children as I aspire to be the best parent that I possibly can. I have found that James Dobson more consistantly finds the balance between loving your children and teaching your children hands down to other literature that is available. He has helped me to trust in my own capability and knowledge and develop a system that works for "our" family. There are so many paths that we as parents have to speculate about. Dobson helps to high-light a path that nurtures your childs spirit while developing a deep sense of respect for themselves as well as others.
A Lyrical Dialectic from the Master of Discipline.......1999-04-24
James Dobson, fundamentalist qua child psychologist, has done it again with this wonderful textually self-referential dialectic on child "rearing."
Dobson, who's earlier work has inspired us to spank our children, really hits the mark with his proverbial cat o' nine-tails here. Gone is the winsome, friendly Dobson- replaced by a ruthless Dobson seeking to enhance "self-esteem" through the either/or of "hide and seek."
Skillfully blending a poetic sense of kinder-angst with the ethic of the ubermensch, Dobson clearly establishes a nexus of wunderkind endlossung, with a result that is sure to elicit more than a few belly laughs.

A Superlative Guide for working with multicultural classes.......2004-11-16
This is not the typical "let's celebrate Hanukkah, it's the Jewish Christmas" kind of simplistic stuff you find in many curricula. It's a thorough, thoughtful and insightful exploration of the many "cultures" that children and parents and teachers bring to the school. It's the school as the central meeting place of various cultures in our society and how to deal with those cultures respectfully and not as problems but as resources, strengths and treasures.

This is an excellent resource for learning self-hynosis and for persons struggling with dissociation. It is clear, well organized and the hypnotic inductions can be modified/customized to work best for you. The goal is on better functioning and empowerment rather than just labeling. She takes rather complex psychological theory and makes it accessible and useable for a non-professional audience.

Creative Insight into self-improvement.......2006-08-11
Building Self-Esteem is a book to read/study/reference and meditate upon. For those like me, looking to enhancing their lives it is thought evoking, encourages self-expansion and helps to build spiritual awareness besed on Christian principles.
Anselm Gruen is a theologan and an experienced psychologist and exceptional spiritual counsellor. He has a deep perception of every day life problems and is able to portray humanity, the world and its failings in a positive and spiritual way.
To me personally, this book is a self-help training manual, a non-directive counselling tool which helps in developing self-understanding, self-awareness, self-respect, self-confidence. Anselm Gruen's creative approach to life, confronts, challenges and encourages positive responses to human failings. He suggests practical ways of expanding ones capabilities both physically and spiritually without hampering the freedom and dignity of the individual.
I currently use the book by re-reading a small part at a time while travelling to work in the morning. This allows me to reflect further during the day.

Sapphires and Other Precious Jewels: Discover and Celebrate the Beauty of Women of African Descent
ASIN: 1884743056 |
Book Description
God Made Me Beauty-Full addresses the fact that we are full of untapped spiritual beauty. While 10% of our beauty is visible to the eye, the other 90% of our beauty-full gifts and talents are hiding on the inside waiting to be discovered. In a culture that attempts to strip African American women of their dignity and self-esteem, this exciting new book by first time author, Terri McFaddin, takes the reader on a power-full journey into the historical and spiritual heritage of African Americans. Each chapter serves as a road map guiding Black Women back to their true identity as the children of God.
Customer Reviews:
I Tried.......2005-11-09
I really wanted to give rave reviews for this book, but I just couldn't do it. The beginning chapters started the book out in a very organized and inspirational direction. It laid the groundwork and described the historical conditions that created the rooted reasons of why so many women of African descent have low self esteem. It even went into a little detail of how to recognize some of the symptoms that indicate low self worth. Then the book gets a little off the subject. The author goes into this somewhat biographical (family tree - like) tribute to all of her ancestors that paved the way for being the person that she is today. Then it gets a little preachy about how to date, what kind of man to marry, how to raise children, etc. Not that any of this information is bad.......we all need that kind of knowledge. But the latter half of the book just really got a little off key for the true subject at hand.
After reading the first half of the book that gave such an EXCELLENT background on recognizing self-inferiority, I would have liked to have read a follow up (solution) on how a woman can now begin the healing process of her wounded spirit......how she can now begin to rebuild her self esteem. I just didn't get that from this material (sorry, Mrs. McFaddin). I recommend the following Christian reading materials for a woman that is trying to get delivered from low self esteem. One book is "Mirror Mirror On the Wall, Seeing Yourself through God's Eyes" by Pastor Wendy Treat ([...]) which is an excellent resource. It's not sold in stores, so you will have to go to the website and order it directly from the church. Another awesome book is "How to Succeed at Being Yourself" by Joyce Meyers. Actually Joyce Meyers has a few good books about self esteem and rejection and she explains how to allow God to heal you. Joyce Meyers books can be bought through amazon.com.
Thank You Jesus!.......2000-01-26
I was blessed to attend a class on Building Self Esteem which was taught by Sis. McFaddin in July 1998(Full Gospel Conference). I purchased this book following the class and three years later it is still a good resource tool. Psalm 139:14 " I am Fearfully and Wonderfully made" was birthed into my spirit through the teaching of this Woman of God. Sis. McFaddin may God continue to richly bless you and feed your spirit as you deliver what God gives you for his people.
This is a great book.......1998-11-10
I bought this book and started reading it immediately. I think this book does a valuable service. I thought just last week about killing myself. I even told someone about it. I just felt useles and hopeless. When I read the poem at the beginning, I knew this book was the message of hope that I have been (literally) praying for. I am thankful that I took the time to order it.
Are you dealing with insecurity?.......1998-07-09
Finally! This book is your much needed help if you feel insecure about how you were created. The author stresses that only 10% of your beauty is on the outside, the other 90% is on the inside... waiting to be discovered! God Made Me Beauty-full is your road map to confidence! Why do I know the author is telling the truth? Because she's my Mom! I grew up being taught this daily! The chapter, Perfect for God's Purpose, is based on her raising me! Read and be blessed!

A godsend for the teenager suffering from obesity and low self-esteem........2007-04-18
Many overweight and/or obese teenagers and young adults suffer from both low self-esteem and insecurity--I myself (at one time) suffered from this problem. This book's authors have incorporated many of the key elements of Lindora's Lean For Life program which have made it such a success. Written with compassion and insight, it can be a great aid for those teenagers and young adults dealing with obesity and the low self-esteem so often associated with it. My only regret is not having known what I do today (I started the LFL program at the age of 30--after having been obese for years while dealing with yo-yo dieting).
Great book to boost your self-confidence and self-esteem........1999-02-08
This book rocks. I was bulimic, but when I read the book I found out new ways to loose weight that really works without hurting myself. Needless to say, it helped me A LOT.
This book is the bomb!!!!!.......1998-08-26
We teens lead some pretty extreme lives. In between bungee jumping, sky surfing, and looking for new places on my body to pierce, it can be a total bummer trying to eat right. That's why this book is way cool!!!! The 28 day program rocked!!! You gotta give it up for this one!!!!
an excellent help-book for overweight or troubled teens.......1997-12-23
i'm really very excited about `bodyPRIDE' simply because i have a teenage boy who was overweight and in a lot of despair about it. we used this book on a daily basis and within 4 months, he dropped several pounds. more important, his self-awareness and self-esteem grew dramatically. now, he's trying out for junior varsity football and is more happy about himself. the plan is easy to do and takes you through it, step by step. your kid can do it with you or, better yet, by him or herself. the language talks to them directly, i think. if you have a problem with your kid, this is a good tool. honestly, art richman
