This book is really wonderful. A definite read. The chapters are short, written in big writing and the message and positive living and her own experiences and her learning makes this an amazing book. Living for Christ and worshiopping and her own beliefs sharing them that has helped her in writing this book and sharing with others how to do and live the same ways for a peaceful and joyous life. I love it and plan on reading this book again.

Book Description
The loss of a mother is one of the most traumatic experiences of a woman's life. At any age, a mother's death may leave a daughter with feelings of anger, abandonment and profound sadness that taint the way she views herself, her world and every other relationship around her. In this breakthrough book, author Patricia Commins, who lost her mother at 26, shows readers that the key to escaping the sorority of sorrow is by understanding their mothers as women and by feeling an ongoing connection with them. From this perspective -outside the parent-child relationship that is so fraught with conflict and complex emotions - women gain key insights into their mothers and themselves. By addressing the psychological and spiritual connection that remains after a mother's death, Remembering Mother, Finding Myself offers the essential element that is missing from other books on motherless daughters. The Path of Understanding -a unique experiential process based on journaling, conversations with friends and relatives, and meditative exercises- does not seek to negate the loss a woman feels when her mother dies. It instead gently leads her beyond the grief and pain to a new awareness, freeing her from forever trying to be the perfect daughter. Through her own illuminating experiences and those of other women, Commins shows women how to reconnect their deceased mothers while finding peace and self-acceptance. Included are interviews with dozens of women, including such notables as writers Joyce Maynard and Nancy Friday and psychiatrist Elizabeth Kubler-Ross.

Almost Perfect.......2006-08-19
What I liked best were the exercises she had at the end of each chapter. A well written and solid book.-Marvin B. Smith
Mom loved me the most.......2006-08-09
Commins has written an insightful book that will cause you to reflect on what your mother has done for you and how it continues to affect you.
The exercises provide guidance on why you don't "fall far from the apple tree."
I recommend this easy to read book for all daughters.
It Takes Guts to Remember; thank you for the Journey!.......2006-07-23
"Draw nearer and listen. Sit inside the circle, close by the fire of warmth and friendship. Tell me your story, and I'll tell you mine," Patricia Commins writes in concluding chapter five. Commins is not a psychologist, nor does she pretend to be. She is a grown woman who has summoned the guts to examine her relationship with her mother, and gives her readers the benefit of that experience. I for one, related to her story, her remembrances, her sense of loss, but most importantly to her joy at discovering her mother and herself. Immersing myself in Ms. Commins' book, I began to recall many forgotten memories of my own mother, a woman who embraced many roles. Mom was typical of the 40's and 50's Midwestern mom who baked cupcakes, scrubbed floors, hung the wash on the clothesline and nurtured her kids. But prior to embracing those roles, she was "Rosie the Riveter" - serving as a draftsman in Ford's River Rouge plant - responsible for the successful completion of the B-24 bomb bay doors. Through Ms. Commins deft ability of prying loose memories through her stories, I remembered mine. I related to her "spiritual e-mail" and found myself probing the memory banks surrounding my father. It matters not the gender of the parent with whom the reader had issues, or whether that parent is still among the living, Ms. Commins, through her gentle remembrances, humor, and down-to-earth approach, has given all readers a true gift. Thank you, Patricia.
Not worth the time.......2006-07-12
This book tries to be a personal memoir, a self-help guide, and perhaps an academic treatise on the psychology of mother-loss (though the author does not appear to be qualified, relying instead on others). It fails on all fronts. If you want to read personal accounts of women's experiences of mother-loss, Hope Edelman's books are better-edited.
Truly a blessing.......2005-08-24
What a blessing this book has been for me! My mother passed away recently after a long illness. Our relationship was often turbulent and my childhood and teen years were sometimes difficult. I spent a lot of my time being angry with her but this book really opened my eyes as to the struggle my mother had just with trying to survive on a day to day basis. I saw my mother in this book and discovered the answers to many questions that baffled me about the kind of person she was. Loving and laughing one minute then crying and accusing the next minute. Now I know why. Thank you, Patricia, for writing this book. My mom and I had many good times too. She had a great sense of humour and I cherish that part of my mother. Your book is a precious gift.

Excellent Grief Resource.......2006-08-18
Remembering With Love is an excellent resource that helps bring comfort to those who are experiencing grief. The short excerpts speak directly to the heart. They help you ride the waves of grief that come and go like the changing tide.
I give this book almost exclusively, instead of flowers. I keep several on hand most of the time. Many friends , colleagues, and family members have told me what a big help this book was to them.

Remembering with Love.......2001-01-15
After the sudden death of my mother and oldest son in an automobile accident, I could not concentrate enough to even read. As time went by, I was eventually able to read short things that did not require deep concentration. This book was wonderful for me because I could handle reading the short messages of hope. It helped me so much. This book is unique in that it reaches out to losses of all types in a very effective way. At the beginning of each message, the author begins by quoting someone who has lost a loved one. She then uses that thought to give hope to those who are grieving. I plan to purchase additional copies of this book to give to others who lose loved ones.
Remembering with Love.......1999-12-04
This book helped me with my own grieving, and I have also given it to several friends who recently lost loved ones. The short 1-2 page essays and thoughts, intended to be a "thought for today" format, are especially helpful for people who, because they are grieving, may not be able to focus on longer books, for longer periods of time. It's a real gem!
This is a wonderful book........1998-08-23
The short essays written by people who have experienced what you are going through, and the suggestions for meditations make it a great resource for the varied emotions of grief. It makes a good book for browsing when you need some uplifting words, or when you need to know that what you are feeling is normal. I think it is especially helpful for those who have suffered the loss of a child. I have given it many times to friends who have lost someone they love.
A truly liberating book/ an excellent source of support.......1998-06-18
Having struggled with many confusing feelings for a year and a half after the sudden death of my beloved 19 year old son, I found this book by accident while browsing through a bookstore in San Francisco in 1993. From the moment I picked it off the shelf I drew comfort from the many short stories of people like myself who are experiencing feelings of total devastation, anger (particularly at God), loneliness, numbness and guilt for not being able to get control of my feelings. To see these feelings verbalized by others, made me realize that not only is it okay to have these feelings, but it is also normal. To be told that I have a RIGHT to be angry, lonely, numb and anything else I may be feeling, freed me from my guilt. I lost my son. I have every right to grieve. And to grieve, any way, and for as long as I need to. A truly liberating book. It still sits out on my table for me to use when I am down on myself. I have recommended it to many people.

Remembering our past.......2007-01-04
It is very important to remember a golden age in which a greater harmony and balance among man and nature existed. It is not idealistic to picture such a world but to realize that we are on the edge of creating a planet, in which its inhabitants are at peace with one another. Yes, Lemuria did physically exist once somewhere in the pacific basin and like all other civilizations it had a period of birth, growth, and a period of demise-everything evolves in cycles. I would recommend this book very highly to everyone who understands that we can return to the golden age that was Lemuria, and what it represented, at its peak.
Very Informative and Inspiring!.......2001-12-30
I've been reccomended this book by several people who've studied Lemurian and Atlantean culture. I had no idea what or who the Lemurians were until I first read about them. This book is both easy to read and contains loads of information on the Lemurians, their culture and mostly their wisdom. I could not put the book down and it will be one of those books that I will always remember for the rest of my life. Due to this book I am constantly reminded of their influence such as Stonehenge, Egyptian and Mayan pyramids, and Bell Rock Mountain. The Lemurians through this book, have inspired me that in spite of the current madness going on in this world there is still hope for a peaceful world. Namaste.
Book Description
Most memory improvement courses do not result in lasting change. They may succeed in teaching effective strategies, but they too often fail to explain when and when not to use these strategies.
The Memory Key is different. This practical, easy-to-use handbook goes beyond mere mnemonics and study skills to shed light on how memory works, and what you need to know and do to achieve genuine memory improvement.
Author Fiona McPherson focuses on the three principal requirements of memory improvement:
* Understanding how your memory works.
* Knowing a whole range of techniques and being able to use them effectively.
* Judging how well you have learned and how likely you are to remember easily and accurately.
The Memory Key is a useful and valuable tool for people of all ages across many fields-from students and business managers dealing with information overload to anyone who fears memory deterioration.
Customer Reviews:
BEST memory book to date! 10 stars!.......2005-08-12
I have all the Harry Loryane books... Shame on me for turning to cheap memory tricks(mnemonics)to ace my studies(I was actually hoping this book was on mnemonics, imagine my disappointment when I found out that it wasn't, and later on my sheer exuberance after mastering true memory!). I had some pretty serious learning problems prior to reading this book...
Before, I could not even recall what happened in a paragraph that I had just read but now I can recall an entire book after just one reading! and most important of all understand its main contentions and all the little nuances. Memory is so fleeting, especially my own that any device to capture it is priceless!
Basically the key to long term transferal or understanding itself is connection: this is why mnemonics is so much more effective than rote rehearsal and the techniques in Memory Key so much more effective than mnemonics. You only understand something to the extent that you can relate it to knowledge that you already have. While mnemonics forms a superficial connection, the Memory key will teach you how to connect on deeper principles (categorizing, expertise, sensitive patterns, super clustering, priming, elaborations etc etc...)
The bottom line is this is the best book on memory improvement, the very first thing it teaches you that memory itself is plural...If you want to remember dates, where your lost glasses are, how to pitch a ball properly or like myself, what you read and study then buy this book, it's peppered with practical and applicable techniques and principles. I suggest reading the note-taking chapter first so that you can properly take notes on the book itself. Some books are meant to be tasted, others to be swallowed and MEMORY KEY to be chewed and digested.
Reliable Strategies, Expectations Well Met.......2004-11-02
This book is extremely helpful.
It teaches exactly how you can improve memory skills in a realistic way. I read this book and followed up with some research of my own. All the supporting research is absolutely spot on. I gave the book to a psych prof to read and he agrees.
The problem with a lot of self help memory books, is that there is a lot of pop psych and "inspiration" without consideration of real application, or the fact that people do have a certain amount of common sense. This book shows exactly how the memory works in combination with the body and environment, and provides ways that you can use to help your memory - all day long.
Fiona has written a book that teaches well, and sticks in the mind because the supporting research is so strong.
One of the best things about the Memory Key, is that it takes a strategy perspective, rather than just looking at fancy techniques or tricks. This strategy perspective makes it far more interesting to apply what is learned from the book. It makes application of memory more like a game. It also makes the application more useable and useful.
I believe this is a great book for all who want to make the most of their mind and memory both short and long term.
Useful hints.......2003-02-20
Having read many books on the 'how' of improving memory, this one was a refreshing surprise. It shows, through an explanation of how memory itself works, why certain techniques are suited for certain kinds of memory tasks, what the relation is between encoding something into memory and how it will be retrieved, and many other interesting things. People who have worked with memory techniques already, or who have at any rate spent time thinking about how their memory works, will probably get the most out of this book.
Like some other reviewers, I noted a tendency towards jargon. I also found the book's layout frankly amateurish (cheesy diagrams, too many fonts, etc). But these minor problems don't detract significantly from the content.
Practical advice for using memory strategies.......2001-06-01
While most books on memorization usually describe memory techniques and strategies, Fiona McPherson's book takes the reader a step further. I have read over a dozen books in the area of memory, and I have discovered through experience the strengths and weaknesses of different memory techniques. In this book however, it teaches the reader how to USE memory strategies rather than just simply the techniques.
The book's approach can be aptly summarized in the phrase, "Smart selection is better than total recall." That is, effort put into understanding what you memorize, as well as why, is better and more effective for long-term recall. This is also true from my own experiences with memorization techniques. The book does not advocate placing everything into working memory. Instead, there is a balance between the cost of a memory technique (in time and effort) and using memory aids, such as creating lists. Memory recall is based not simply on techniques, but also in knowing how memory works as well as why specific strategies are effective. Like other memory books, this book also emphasizes frequent review of information. However unlike other books it provides practical tips on effective reviewing. Also the chapter on "Study Strategies" is an excellent chapter worth the price of the book. It breaks down the details for note-taking to a level that makes sense. It also describes creative ways to summarize information; these are in turn tremendous aids to understanding and ultimately, memorization of the material.
Some of the weaknesses in the book include terms that are not clearly defined for the reader at first (cues, codes) as well as a number of typographical errors (p. 42 - " traget" is target and "sues" is cues). Overall though, it is nice to pick up a book, read it and have my own experiences concerning memory validated in the book's advice. Fiona McPherson's book fills a nice niche for how to be aware of memory strategies and in the practical aspect of applying memory techniques.
Ignore the 1 year old reviewer -- It's a decent book........2001-02-09
This book does a decent job of explaining how memory works and how to make the most use out of it. It's a very realistic book -- the author is the first one I've come across who understands the effort involved in using some of the popular memory techniques. It's all very useful information with zero fluff. In my opinion, the two pages that discussed goal setting were worth the price of the book.
The only thing I would improve in the book is that I would take a little more time defining terms before using them. For example, the author talks about memories as "codes" but then she also talks about "cues" and it took me awhile to understand that cues are codes that lead you to a specifc code that you're trying to remember.
Book Description
Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), founder of the Japanese martial art of Aikido, is one of the greatest and most beloved martial artists in history. Remembering O-Sensei is a portrait of Ueshiba as told by his uchi-deshi, the students who lived and trained with him as his disciples. This collection of memoriesâgathered here for the first timeâcaptures the essence of this extraordinary martial arts master and visionary, revealing Ueshiba's teaching style, his daily habits, his philosophy of life, the lovably human aspects of his personality, and his deep belief that Aikido could be used as a means to creating peace and harmony in the world. The book also provides a snapshot of a fascinating time in Japanese history when a student would apprentice with his master by essentially moving in with him and receiving instruction through rigorous training sessions, and also by serving him and observing his actions in daily life. Most of the students whose remembrances are included in this book went on to spread the teaching of Aikido throughout the world and became masters in their own right.

A window in time.......2007-07-24
If you have any interest in the life and ways of the founder of Aikido, this is a delightful book of paragraph-long snapshots of experiences people had with O Sensei. I really enjoyed the various perspectives.
Great Stories.......2007-07-03
This book has lots of heartwarming and awe inspiriing stories in it. Just what I was hoping for. I got it so I could learn a bit of the candid moments in people's lives when they met the founder of Aikido. As a practitioner of Aikido I would recommend this book to beginners as an introduction into the Aikido society and attitude. I hope that one day I will have a surreal experiance comparible to those in this book, even though I was born too late to meet Ueshiba-sensei.
Remembering O-Sensei:.......2006-10-13
This is a book with a difference. This book allows the reader an insight into O-Sensei the man, rather than the often mythical image that is found in many publications. It is also refreshing that Ms Perry avoids the usual fantasy associated with many Aikido books. I was very pleased to see the story of the first meeting between my teacher Kenshiro Abbe Sensei and O-Sensei being worthy of inclusion in this excellent book.

Book Description
In 1932, Cambridge University Press published Remembering, by the psychologist Frederic Bartlett. The landmark book described fascinating studies of memory and presented the theory of schema which informs much of cognitive science and psychology today. In Bartlett's most famous experiment, he had subjects read a Native American story about ghosts and had them retell the tale later. Because their backgrounds were so different from the cultural context of the story, the subjects changed details in the story that they could not understand. Besides containing important seminal concepts, Remembering is fascinating from an historical perspective. Bartlett discusses the ideas and research of Ebbinghaus, Freud, Jung, and Spearman. In addition, his comparison of Swazi African culture and British culture is a study in cross-cultural psychology that was ahead of its time.

Writing and Remembering.......2001-10-31
That's a fact the pshycological tests don't use this kind of evaluation. However in the educational field there's some important factors to use this strategy. With this method we can reach some points of the development of writing in the youth.

A Psychology Classic.......2001-08-01
This is one of the classic texts of experimental psychology and a must-read for memory researchers. It introduces the concept of a "schema" and includes multiple landmark studies. It is easy to read, including many examples and illustrations. It should be on every psychologist's shelf next to James' Principles of Psychology and Ebbinghaus' Memory (which, interestingly, is the inspiration for Bartlett's title; Bartlett considered human memory dynamic, thus the verb form contrasting with Ebbignhaus' storehouse view). Don't ignore these and other classic texts in your study of modern experimental psychology!

Outstanding!.......2004-05-22
As an animal lover myself, as a certified hospice bereavement counselor, and as another author who's written about pet loss and specialized in pet loss counseling since 1992, I loved this book. Like all the rest of Alan's books, this one is clearly stated, clinically accurate and beautifully written -- and it comes from the heart of the author's own personal experience with pet loss. Because Alan Wolfelt is so very well known and respected in the field of death education and counseling, I believe his book about pet loss will do more than help bereaved animal lovers. I think it will lift the experience of pet loss into the mainstream of professional grief literature where it rightfully belongs, and that alone is a cause for celebration. For many years I have felt that uninformed and insensitive mental health professionals can do more damage to disenfranchised bereaved animal lovers than any member of the lay public can do, because they should know better -- and it is up to those of us who know the agony of pet loss to teach them. I want to thank Alan for writing this book, and I wish him every success in its sales and distribution. For my part, I've already listed it under the BOOKS ABOUT PET LOSS category on the Articles and Books page of my own Grief Healing Web site (http://www.griefhealing.com), I've recommended it to both pet loss support organizations with whom I consult, and I will continue to recommend it to my clients and participants in my pet loss support groups as well.
