5 out of 5 stars Great way to start a conversation about Christianity.......2007-05-29

If you are a youth or young adult and you are looking for a light book to pass on to a non Christian (or wavering Christian) friend, this is it. It's also a good book for any Christian who likes a good read. The writing style is unique and often humorous. It reads like journal entries so don't expect perfect grammer (complete sentences). I only say this because the only one star rating mentions this. If you check his profile, you will notice many of his reviews are negative though so I don't know how trustworthy a reviewer he is for the under 30 crowd. I, however, work with youth group at church, lead the young adults ministry, am an adolescent counselor, and am actually under 30. Therefore, I think I have a pretty good grip on what this age group likes. I have many friends who have read this book (ages 16-27) and not one of them has disliked it. I think that says a lot. It makes you think, and gives you the opportunity to discuss your faith with others in an open and honest way. Isn't that all that really matters in the end?

5 out of 5 stars GOD, brilliant Lord, yours is a household name........2007-04-27

"Let the knowledge of His transcendence bring us back to life. Let it flow like blood to sleeping limbs, and feel them tingle as they awake in awe. Shake life back into your legs and let them carry you running with wind and thunder. Shake life back into your chest and let your heart beat in pounding reverence. Let praise come face to the ground, trembling with life an awareness that we are found by a holy God."
- pg. 70, on Psalm 29

This book for me was absolutely breathtaking. In it, Crowder uses the ancient practice of "Lectio Divina", which he later explains. This method consists of reading Scripture not to try and pull things out of it, but rather slowly reading through a passage of Scripture, chewing it up, and just being quiet and meditating on what you just heard. Breathe it in slowly, absorb the perfume of God's Word, let it settle in on you. Then, after some time, when settled, write your own response.

Crowder examines 21 different Psalms from the Old Testament (starting w/ Ps. 1 and ending w/ Ps. 150) in Lectio Divina style. In each of these very short chapters, he starts by writing the Psalm for the reader. All Psalms are taken from Eugene Peterson's "The Message Remix". This was for me reading these 21 Psalms in a new light than ever before. And the view was breathtaking. (I'm buying a Psalm book in "The Message" now, because I was so taken aback.)

After the Psalm, the reader will find Crowder's own "lectio divina" on that Psalm. Crowder is an extremely unique writer and an amazing communicator. I have included a quote from his Psalm 29 "lectio divina" at the top of the post. Crowder will start off talking about something in his life that seems totally unrelated to the Psalm itself; meeting Richard Simmons, taking up photography, his childhood desire for a nickname, going to the bathroom, his own short term memory, the childhood bully, all kinds of stuff. But by within the next few pages he's turned it around into something grand, something magnificent, a breathtaking view of the Psalm. He discusses individual and corporate worship, the name of Yahweh, the transcendence of our God, His amazing love, his vast creativity, hope in the midst of despair, God's glory, and on and on.

In the beginning of the book, Crowder discusses that his purpose is to help the reader understand the "praise habit". How, just like a little kid finding a toy who can't help but hold it up triumphantly and show the world his new prise, praise for our God should flow forth uninterrupted from our lives. How we find God in the pew at church, in the Bible at home, and in a chicken sandwich at Arby's. God is here among His people.

In this book you will laugh out loud at Crowder's humor, raise your eyebrows at his unexplainable (self-admitted) quirkiness, and wonder at his truly amazing ability to communicate the God of the universe to the human soul.

Does a nun have to decide what to wear in the morning? No, she just puts on her habit... day in, and day out. And so should we, our Praise Habit, until it becomes "habit"ual.

On the back cover is a reference to Psalm 64:10; "... Good-hearted people, make praise your habit." There's a brief, three paragraph synopsis of the book, starting out, "Praise is something we are, not something we do." This first of Crowder's books is, on the back cover, recommended by Donald Miller ("Blue Like Jazz", "To Own A Dragon", "Through Painted Desserts") and Brian McLaren (pastor, author of "A New Kind of Christian", voice for the today's emergent church).

I recommend this book as one of the best you'll ever read. I would also encourage you to check out his second book, "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven, but Nobody Wants to Die, or (The Eschatology of Bluegrass)".

5 out of 5 stars praiseworthy!.......2007-03-09

i bought this book and everybody wants to go to heaven.. at the same time, this is my fave by far. it's one of those books you know you'll read over and over. in fact, i have to re-buy it because i gave it to my pal for her birthday! it's very easy to read, very personal, i like the personal recollections that david included. i would definitely recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars For a casual fan, a good read.......2007-01-18

David Crowder tackles the topic of praise in a very readable and interesting manner in 'Praise Habit'. THe topic of worship and how verbal, sung praise fits into worship, and whether or not it is a fluffy or necessary part of Christianity is a hot topic, and Crowder makes a strong argument for singing praise to be a part of our lifestyle, that we have to glorify God the way religious wear their habit--it has to be a visible sign of our commitment to Christ.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was that about half of it was just psalms with reflections, and Crowder uses "The Message: Remix" translation, which I can't stand. This is probably just a personal dislike, and the rest of the book is great.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable devotional if a little flat in spots........2006-12-15

Praise Habit by David A. Crowder is a nice devotional about finding God in everyday places where we don't normally look for him. Crowder does a terrific job of reminding us why it's so important to praise God in all things. Each chapter starts with a Psalm from The Message Bible. The language is very modern; it can occasionally be off-putting, but for the most part brings new depth to the verses. After the Psalm, Crowder gives the reader a short anecdote, usually humorous, about events in his own life. Where the book stumbles is in the connecting of the Psalms to these stories. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. I didn't connect with this book the way that I like to with a devotional, but it was still an enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life.......2007-07-23

I was just now filling out a form to send to "Crossings", in answer to their request for me to tell them about the book that changed my life. I decided to see if Amazon had the book, for the correct spelling of the author's name. So, here I am posting a review. Before I read this book, all my prayers were about me, myself and I. My prayer time was a miserable time. A friend let me read her copy. My prayers went from being about me, to praising God for who he was, his goodness, his mercy, and his love in my life, and that of my family. My prayer time became a joyful time. I found myself praising God, regardless of the situation I was facing, knowing my heavenly Father was in complete control of my life. While I've never agreed with Merlin that God sent it all...the good AND the evil, I believe it could not have come my way unless God ALLOWED it. (I'll put it this way: I agree with Joseph, in the Bible. 'you meant it for my harm, but God meant it for my good.') I am not posting a review for the sake of arguing with anyone. I will not. I just want to say that this book definitely changed my prayer life, therefore, my entire life. I encourage anyone and everyone to read it, especially if your prayer life is boring, or frustrating. It could change YOUR prayer life!

5 out of 5 stars Pleased as punch.......2007-05-14

Awesome book - was in just as good as condition as listed.

5 out of 5 stars Disagree with Ron.......2007-01-27

All I have to say is that you can look at the Bible 100 times over and still have no idea what you are reading. Many truths of God come in prayer and in this case "praise". Ron's review a couple of posts down says that Merlin is preaching to us that we should praise God for the evil that has come. That is completely and wholly FALSE. Merlin is telling us to praise God for the good that he will work through the evil. God does NOT cause evil; the devil creates evil and sin. God works through the devil's horrific(horrific is an understatement) ways and brings dumbfounding presence of Himself to the situation.

So when Ron says,"But it is senseless to praise Him FOR sin or evil. God hates sin and evil, and the Bible is full of clear teaching about it," he is correct that God hates sin and evil, but we do NOT praise Him for sin and evil; we praise him for his wonderful plan fro us to work straight through that evil and fill us with everlasting love. I highly HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book. So listen my brothers and sisters, if you want the true meaning to this life-changing book, pray and trust in the Lord!

This is a new way of looking at how to overcome challenges.

For all of us up against the wall, this is one way to bring the walls down!!

5 out of 5 stars 20 years later, I understand!.......2006-10-28

This book had a seminal impact on my life when I read it over 20 years ago. I knew that it captured deep truth and God's heart in some mysterious way. I also know that its principles have not failed me in my experience over all this time.

I say mysterious because for all these years I have also struggled with the conflict between the teachings in this book and teachings from the pulpit. Some aspects of this book go beyond "controversial" and approach "heretical". Read some of the comments in reviews below. But yet, I knew that it was, indeed, correct. I just did not understand how.

My purpose in writing this is that after all this time, God finally gave me understanding in a wonderful way - through 2 different sermons given in two different -unrelated- churches on the same day. They said, essentially, the same thing and directly addressed my long-standing concerns about the theology of this book.

One paster was from Pass Christian, Louisiana, and related how Katrina is re-shaping his world, up to and including opening doors for him to directly minister to the families of the Amish school shooting victims up here in our area.

Praise God for sin and for the works of Satan? Never! That is anathema to us.

Well, carefully consider this. Do we ever thank God for the crucifixion of his Son? Think about it.

From the standpoint of His disciples back then, there could be no clearer act of sin and Satan, yet we praise God for it.

This has been burning in my heart for a week now, so I went to Amazon to order a bunch of these books to give as gifts to my children and close friends, along with a cover letter that will be similar to this (my first) review here at Amazon to help them over the hump that held me for over 20 years. Read this book. It holds a foundational truth for our Christian walk.

4 out of 5 stars Andrew E. Hill Helps Contemporary Worship Leaders.......2000-06-21

Dr. Hill's book presents an overview of expressions of and teaching on worship in the Old Testament. Chapter one gives some practical explanations about Hebrew words translated as the English word worship. Elements of worship addressed in following chapters include: Worship as lifestyle (personal Piety), The development of worship from the patriarchs to the prophets, The holism of the Hebrew understanding of worship as it relates to form, place and time, and the role of the King as worship leader. The tension between God's transcendence and immanence is evident in discussions about Hebrew worship. The role of music and the arts is related to praise, especially in the context of the Psalms and Davidic worship. "Enter His Courts With Praise" also includes numerous helpful charts and illustrations.

Dr. Hill identifies a number of parallels between vibrant, God honoring worship of the Old Testament and some of the trends in worship today. Included are trends such as: the corporate nature of worship (as opposed to some of the negative effects of individualism), worship as active rather than passive, an attention to history as well as the bible, and a more holistic understanding of the relationship between God and man.

This book is an excellent resource for pastors and worship leaders. An understanding of Old Testament worship remains essential for effective worship leadership in today's church. Readers may be surprised at how relevant Old Testament teaching on worship is to the growing church of a postmodern world.

    Book Description

The desire to praise and celebrate is universal. Worshippers do extraordinary things and sacrifice for what they praise, and the dynamics set in motion help shape history. Although the movement of praise runs through all the great issues of life, knowledge, and theology, it is best fulfilled in praise to God. Drawing on examples from the Bible to modern times, the authors thoroughly analyze the concept of praise throughout Christian history and explore possibilities for integrating doctrine and worship. The result is a theology that is exceptionally joyous, but firmly grounded in a prophetic vision of God and his importance for human knowledge and existence. As a substantial resource for pastors and readers interested in current conversations about worship and spirituality, this book provides rich insights.

Have you ever thought about blessing God? Probably not!

When most people think about blessings, they think about what kind of blessings they can get--a new car, a kinder husband, a better job, a healthier body. Now, God wants his children to have all kinds of blessings, but sometimes the blessings start coming to us--when we start blessing God first. But how do we bless God?

Once someone understands this concept, it transforms his or her life. A new appreciation of nature starts. An awareness of the presence of God in even the most mundane aspects of one's life elevates a person's existence and provides great joy. Life just gets better and better.

With examples from Scripture and Jewish tradition this book; teaches you the biblical formula used by the men and women of the Bible, including the Messiah; points you to new ways and reasons to praise the Lord, that you never thought of before; and enables you to grasp the Bible better than ever.

Let Us Praise. Have you wondered what all the attention on praise is about? Have you desired to praise God more freely, but didn’t know how? If you have, then this book is for you. Cornwall answers these questions deftly and authoritatively. Weaving his lessons through 350 Scriptures that pertain to praise, he assures us that praise is patterned by God and therefore divine. This book will transform the way you pray. “O Magnify the LORD with me” (Psalm 34:3).

Let Us Worship. Cornwall wrote, “I have not attempted to do a thorough exposition of all Bible passages that deal with worship. I have instead sought to inspire, direct, and channel the responses of the reader into worship, and to share from my experiences and observations over the past few years.” His book is a timeless work that transports the reader into the courts of God. It reveals the ways that worship goes beyond prayer and praise. The reader will learn the secrets of an intimate relationship with God—knowledge that draws the individual into a depth of worship that few ever know.

        Book Description

Worship occurs in many ways. Some people worship God through good works. Others worship the Lord through prayer. Many worship the Almighty through singing songs of praise. But more and more people are worshipping God through dance.

In "Dancing for Joy," Murray Silberling, one of the world's foremost experts on worship dance, uncovers fascinating facts about this biblical form of worship.

Rabbi Murray Silberling's book, "Dancing for Joy" is an excellent tool for anyone interested in the topics of worship and dance. As a theologian, and considered one of the foremost experts on worship dance; Rabbi Silberling provides historical and theological context of dance. And as a dancer himself, he also helps to provide helpful advice and tools for those who desire to begin dancing, or those who have a desire to start a dance ministry within their own congregations. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful & joyful introduction to messianic dance worship.......2005-03-07

If you have ever been curious about the use of dance in Biblical worship, then this is the book for you. "Dancing for Joy" is a delightful survey of Biblical and historical examples of dance worship. This is not an exhaustive treatment, but enough to demonstrate the principles. The author also includes a number of helpful tools, such as a dance step glossary, and few examples of dances.

The book is a pretty light read, and has a respectful and joyful style. There aren't a lot of references and notes, but when you stop to think about it when was the last time you saw lots of stuffy on this topic? Hopefully this book will encourage more of that.

Dance worship is a pretty distinctive and integral part of Messianic Jewish Congregations; this is the perspective from which the book was written. For those who want to get an idea about Messianic dance, and perhaps integrate it inot your congregation, this is a great book. If you have doubts that dance and worship (Godly) can coexist, this is also an excellent starting point.

In summary this is a delightful book that gives a helpful picture of what congregational dance can be. May you use dance in your worship of the Lord!

Chalice Praise presents some of the best of contemporary praise music, both musically and theologically. It makes a great resource for small congregations or large. The full accompaniment edition provides good musical support. Musical parts are easy to discover. We ordered enough pew copies for our choir and a pair of Full Accompaniment editions and it really pepped up our worship experience.
