4 out of 5 stars There is a Season (Cheney and Shiloh: The Inheritance).......2006-07-13

As always the authors, Lynn & Gilbert Morris have done well again. The story holds your interest and the continuing history of Cheney's family enfolding is fun to read. My only suggestion is that I would like to see Cheney & Shiloh's relationship develop more.

4 out of 5 stars Do married couples act like this?.......2005-08-12

Cheney and Shiloh take time off to take Cheney's parents to Florida to recupriate from winter illness. But a body is found in the wine cellar and they have to figure out who killed the owner of the house and how they did it. The pages are packed with the funniest dialog between husbands and wives I have ever read. This mystery keeps you in suspense and laughing until the very end.

5 out of 5 stars great book even after long wait.......2005-08-02

I have read all of the Cheney Duvall series and love them all.The long wait for this new book was worth it.It is intriguing and easy to understand.I always learn something new and fascinating by all the research done in the writing of the book.As usual I think the new Cheney Duvall book is a hit.

5 out of 5 stars 1800's CSI Cheney and Shilo style!.......2005-07-29

I waited very impatiently for this newest installment to the Inheritance series and I'm completely satisfied with it! Once again, another great book from the Morris duo. I can only hope for more Cheney and Shiloh books! I'd hate to see them go!

Trying to escape the brutal NY winter, Cheney and Shiloh take Cheney's parents and her brother Dev's family to winter in the balmy South. When they arrive at the house that Victoria has rented, they discover a body in the cellar and so much more! I love reading about Cheney's pure enthusiasm when faced with the prospect of doing an autopsy and looking at slides of "liver juice and eyeball jelly" (as Minerva puts it). I also thought it was very clever that Grinder's will involved the use of Shakespeare's "Macbeth". Great book, highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great new book in the series.......2005-07-14

For those of you who have read and loved all of the "Cheney Duvall, MD" books and the "Cheney & Shiloh: The Inheritance" books, you will not be disappointed with this continuation in the series. I could hardly put it down until I finished reading it!

The great things about this book are the same in the rest: the author has a gift for description, from the character's attire, post-Civil War mannerisms and etiquette, to the setting the book takes place in. It really makes the reader be able to acurately picture exactly what is going on. Also, each character is very well developed with their thoughts and emotions and you find yourself curious about every single one.

"There is a Season" includes almost all of the main characters from the previous two novels. Cheney and Shiloh, of course, but also Cheney's parents, Dev and Victoria with their 3 adopted children (Dart, Solange, and Lisette), Bain Winslow, plus our favorite hired help like Sketes, Fiona, and Jauncy. The plot was different (murder wasn't really something Cheney had experienced until the last novel) and intriguing.

The only disappointment I had was that there is not very much about the relationship between Cheney and Shiloh. Cheney didn't even personally enter the book until a few chapters had gone by. Maybe the first two books of "Cheney & Shiloh: The Inheritance" had more relationship development simply because it was the beginning of the Irons-Winslows' marriage. Dev was also absent until the end of the book, so there was hardly any information on the Dev-Victoria relationship or what Dev thinks of his new introduction to parenthood with his adopted kids.

Overall, it was a great read and I will read it many times again. I hope there will be more in the series!

Leo and Diane Dillon have collaborated on 40 illustrated books and won a shelfful of major awards for their artistic work, including two Caldecott Medals. No surprise, then, that this book is a feast for the eyes--but it's remarkable even by their exalted standards. The text, printed in large, clear capitals along the bottom of the pages, consists simply of the famous verses from Ecclesiastes: "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die...." Each phrase is illustrated by one of 16 panels, and each panel stems from the artistic style of a different culture, from Egyptian tomb friezes, to Japanese harvest scenes, to Aboriginal bark paintings, to Greek vase paintings. The rich, sophisticated illustrations may appeal more to parents than to their children--and verses like "a time to kill" may be too much for the very young--but there could be no more beautiful vehicle for the old wisdom that we have to know, expect, and live with both the good and the bad that life will inevitably bring us. At the end of the book the authors provide interesting information on the style and the art history behind each illustration. (Click to see a sample spread. 5 out of 5 stars A classic with many layers of meaning.......2007-07-14

We first received this a present when our daughter was young, it has become an enduring classic in our house. The illustrations reveal styles from around the world and give much to discuss in relation to the text. This is a book you will want to hold on to! We have given it to many friends as a baby gift over the years.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Verse in an Exceptionally Beautiful Style.......2004-10-02

There's an enjoyable specialness to this beautiful rendition of "To Every thing There is a Season" by Leo and Diane Dillon. Author and artist raise the sensory awareness of traditional Biblical text. They transpose exquisite simple Ecclesiastes prose from the traditional to the modern. They take the well-known and breathe new life into verse by adding cultural diversity and the beauty of artistic interpretation. I keep at least two copies of this beautiful book in my house at all times because, although it might be perceived as a stunning children's book, I actually use this book as a bereavement gift for families experiencing the loss of a loved one, regardless of age. Start a tradition in your family by giving this book to those you love who are experiencing personal losses of any kind. This is a high brow children's rendition of Biblical text worthy of an adult's attention.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations of 'To Everything there is a Season'.......2001-10-10

(Library of Congress 97-35124(I borrowed it from the public library to read). In their appendix,The Dillons,(Leo & Diane)have listed verses in the bible's Old Testament's Ecclesiastes according to their preferences on which ethnic groups or countries builds up,who laughs, who embraces, who speaks, who loves by the order in which they place the countries in the biblical verses. It begins with Ireland(to everthing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven followed by Egypt,Japan,Mexico,Greece,India,Europe,North America,Ethiopia,Thailand,China,Russia,Australia, the Far North(Siberia to Greenland),and ends with the Middle East WITH THE verses a time of war & a time of peace). And of course a picture of the planet earth with "one generation....but the earth abides forever)".I'm glad they put it where children would not be interested in reading the small print..they have bigger pictures on page 1-30,and most wouldn't understand Egypt associate with dying or Mexico associated with killing,or Greece associated with a time to break down ,India on a time to weep or Europe on a time to mourn.I would give it to an adult vs a child as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book for All Ages.......2000-12-16

This book is a treasure of representative illustrations of artistic styles from a wide variety of cultures. Although the text comes from a specific time and culture, it demonstrates that its message is applicable to all members of the human family. I have made this a standard gift for friends and family with new children. The colorful pictures are stimulating and captivating for the very young who have not yet learned to read, while the timeless text provides a new level for children to experience the book as they get older. As an adult, I find this book to be something I enjoy over and over for myself and to give as a gift.

2 out of 5 stars Misconceived multiculturalism.......2000-03-19

Althought the illustrations are beautiful, I think it's deeply problematic to take Judeo-Christian theology and then attribute it to other cultures. At least 2/3 of the illustrations represent times, places, and peoples who wouldn't have been familiar with the text being illustrated. And, since the explanatory notes in the back are so thin, no real appreciation of the other cultures being invoked is achieved. Mixtec human sacrifice as an illustration of "A time to kill, and a time to heal?" Just how will this promote cross-cultural understanding/respect? There's clearly enough historical/cultural/national diversity among people who have read/believed in these verses from Ecclesiastes to produce a celebration of difference within a common faith. That would have been a much more responsible approach. As it is, this book is either an assertion of the universality of sectarian beliefs or just an attempt by some talented illustrators to show that they can imitate a wide variety of artistic styles. For an example of someone (writing for elementary school aged children) who handles multiculturalism (within a Judaic tradition) well, see Barbara Goldin's _Journeys with Elijah_. And if you just want a picture book of these verses, consider Barner's To Everything.

5 out of 5 stars There Is A Season.......2007-08-13

This is a life changing book. Joan Chittister is a little extreme in her feminist position for me but everything else in her book truly touched my soul and made me rethink some long-held opinions.

5 out of 5 stars Enriched my life.......2006-07-02

The book I read was given to me by a dear friend. I have read it many times over. It is deep, thoughtful and meaningful - yet uplifting. It truly enriches my life each time I read it.

Unfortunately, the book I ordered over a month ago, has never arrived. I wanted to give it as a gift to someone for the same reasons I just stated. I cannot even get a reasonable ship date from Amazon so I don't even know if it will EVER arrive. I am a very, very unhappy customer of Amazon at this time, but that does not reflect on this wonderful book. Maybe you should order it elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Breath taking.......2005-09-10

Warning: the art in this book will inspire you! If you have never seen the art of John August Swanson, this is a grand introduction. I also recommend "The Story of Ruth: Twelve Moments in Every Woman's Life," another collaboration between Chittister and Swanson.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book that helps understand contemporary problems.......1999-05-25

This is a beautifully written and illustrated book that makes us see the world in a new light. The author explains issues such as intolerance, war and lonelines as immature reactions that can be understood and overcome by spiritual growth and reverence to the soul and to the natural world.

The book consists of 20 short essays, each pondering one of the seasons in the Book of Ecclesiastes, a time to be born and a time to die, a time to love and a time to hate,a time to plant and a time to sow, etc. and guiding us to meditate and to see life in a fuller and more gentle context.

This is a beatifully illustrated book that can be used as a special gift. I have read and re-read it, which I seldom do, because it always helps me focus on the real virtues of life. I have given it to my ( young adult) children who are now entering the time in their lives where living meaningfully will impact all that they do.

The simplicity of the style and the poetry of the images makes this a delightful book to be turn to time and again. Few authors can say so much in such few words.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and illustrated verses of Ecclesiates........1999-01-04

Joan Chittister's reflections on the famous verses of Ecclesiates, 'to everything there is a season...' are not only articulate, suscinct, and penned in beautiful prose, they are also thought provoking and challenging in many ways. John August Swanson's art is simply breathtaking! The more you study the pictures, the more there is to be revealed. Included is a useful description of how the print was made by the artist himself. I have read some of Joan Chittister's works before and find her style to be interesting. It is deceptively easy to read. She is profound in her observations and astute in her assessments. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and found it to be one of the best I read all year.

    Book Description

The well-loved words of Ecclesiastes take on new life and meaning in the sun-baked rural setting of a South African homestead. Sowing, planting, and reaping through the wet and dry seasons, going to market, day-to-day dealings with neighbors and acquaintances, love and hostility, the sadness of mourning and the joy of celebration with family and friends — Judy Daly portrays an ageless world, studded with color and miniature detail, in this very special book.

5 out of 5 stars The Second Part Of The Best Novellas And Long Novelettes.......2007-07-21

This is the "Science Fiction Hall of Fame" (Volume IIB), edited by Ben Bova; the second half of the second volume. This volume was published in 1973, and as with the Volume I, there were a set of criteria for which stories were selected. In this case the stories that were voted on had to be published prior to 1966, and there could be no more than one entry per author, although this limitation did not exclude authors who were published in Volume I, but was a limitation within Volume II itself. Both volumes IIA and IIB are for works which are longer novelettes and novellas, i.e. stories of more than 15,000 words. Volume I was arranged in chronological order of when the stories were published, but each of the Volume II books are arranged alphabetically by author within each sub-volume.

Not surprisingly, with the longer stories, there is a shorter table of contents than for Volume I, with just 11 stories each in Volume IIA and IIB. But what maybe lacking in quantity is made up for in quality, with such stories as:

    * The Martian Way by Isaac Asimov - novella
    * Earthman, Come Home by James Blish - novelette
    * Rogue Moon by Algis Budrys - novella
    * The Specter General by Theodore R. Cogswell - novella
    * The Machine Stops by E. M. Forster - novelette
    * The Midas Plague by Frederik Pohl - novella
    * The Witches of Karres by James H. Schmitz - novelette
    * E for Effort by T. L. Sherred - novelette
    * In Hiding by Wilmar H. Shiras - novelette
    * The Big Front Yard by Clifford D. Simak - novella
    * The Moon Moth by Jack Vance - novella

Actually, there is nothing lacking in quantity here either, as this sub-volume is over 550 pages, as was the first sub-volume.

This volume, taken as a whole, does a little better job of balancing out the different eras of Science Fiction than Volume I did. At the same time, the quality of the collection remains at the highest level, with classic stories from start to finish. In addition to the stories themselves, there is an introduction by Ben Bova, but it is the same introduction that was included in Volume IIA. One could argue over whether or not there were other stories which should have been considered, but clearly every story here is very good and worthy of consideration.

4 out of 5 stars Same as For Everything There Is A Season.......2006-03-28

This book is a literal reprint with a new cover and new title of Frank Craighead's previous book "For Everything There Is A Season". If you're interested in the natural history of the greater Yellowstone region or in the correlations of natural events then one of these are a must have addition to your library. But they are identical with nothing more than a cover and title change so do not buy both.

The book is great, but buyers should be aware that it is an exact reprint with a new jacket and a new title. I certainly wouldn't have purchased an exact copy of a book already in my library and feel that Amazon and the publisher should make this clear.

      5 out of 5 stars A Biologist's Lovesong to Wyoming.......2001-08-16

As one who was first shown the Northern Lights, alerted to a bull elk's bugle, and introduced to Blue Flax (Linum lewisii) by Frank Craighead, and one favored with the chance to rent a cabin from him facing the Tetons and to enjoy many hours of conversation and dinners with him and his family, I feel qualified to say that this rare book, FOR EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON, is a portrait of the man as well as the biologist. With an almost poetic passion (but minus sentimentality), Frank shares with us the intricate details of biotic life in the Grand Teton-Yellowstone ecosystems---what "events" occur coinstantaneously and may signal the occurence of what OTHER events, within each given season and "subseason". His knowledge of these interrelationships is transfixing to the amateur naturalist (like myself!), and inspiring. The flow of Life itself brims from this book. And while he could easily hoard such choice hints as where and when to find morel mushrooms or certain rare flowers, he doesn't: He is generous in trusting his readers to not harm the biota they discover via his book. A better homage and resource book for this region could not be found.

For if you can love nature, you will want to save it; And I see that as one of Frank's primary goals. Yet he is generous, not hoarding, in his knowledge of secret sites where exciting biota interact: He could easily withold where and at what exact time of year one finds morel mushrooms or certain unusual flowers, but he doesn't. He trusts the reader enough to not harm what he discovers through Frank's book. A valuable, valuable read and resource. There could not be any better for that region.

5 out of 5 stars Science and Celebration.......2000-03-25

For anyone who's in love with the land of the Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, Craighead's book is required reading. What a joy to follow the changes of the seasons and the cycle of birth and migration of the area's animals with this knowledgeable man as a guide! Craighead focuses on weekly changes in climate and life, and each week is brimming with details of flora and fauna. I am constantly learning about my home, but this book isn't just for Jackson Hole dwellers - there are vivid photos on every page and extensive appendices for birders and amateur ecologists, as well as mammoth additional reading lists and a detailed index. Thanks, Frank.

        Book Description

The story is simple, seen through the eyes of an 11-year-old boy. As an adult he remembers the way things were back home on the farm on the west coast of Cape Breton. The time was the 1940s, but the hens and the cows and the pigs and the sheep and the horse made it seem ancient. The family of six children excitedly waits for Christmas and two-year-old Kenneth, who liked Halloween a lot, asks, “Who are you going to dress up as at Christmas? I think I’ll be a snowman.” They wait especially for their oldest brother, Neil, working on “the Lake boats” in Ontario, who sends intriguing packages of “clothes” back for Christmas. On Christmas Eve he arrives, to the delight of his young siblings, and shoes the horse before taking them by sleigh through the woods to the nearby church. The adults, including the narrator for the first time, sit up late to play the gift-wrapping role of Santa Claus.

The story is simple, short and sweet, but with a foretaste of sorrow. Not a word is out of place. Matching and enhancingthe text are black and white illustrations by Peter Rankin, making this book a perfect little gift.

For readers from nine to ninety-nine, our classic Christmas story by one of our greatest writers.

Alfred Portale is one of our foremost chefs. His cooking at Manhattan's Gotham Bar and Grill is widely acclaimed for its refined yet down-to-earth deliciousness. "When it comes to cooking," Portale says, "there are 12 seasons," a truth his 12 Seasons Cookbook explores in bountiful detail. Reflecting that each month embodies its own seasonal and psychological moment, and therefore makes its own demands in the kitchen, he presents more than 100 recipes matched to the culinary calendar. Though many of these require a cooking workout, a sufficient number are simple enough for most cooks to try when the mood strikes.

Portale characterizes the months. November means Thanksgiving and December Christmas, and for these he provides recipes like Pumpkin and Sweet Garlic Custards and Lamb Chops and Truffled Mashed Potatoes. The depths of February require a little "culinary sunshine" in the form of Lemon Risotto with Spot Prawns, among other dishes, while May is "the big bang of the culinary year," a rebirth celebrated with dishes including Grilled Soft-Shell Crabs with Asparagus, New Potatoes, and a Lemon-Caper Vinaigrette. July is "birthdays and barbecues"--Montauk Chowder salutes this height of summer--while September signals a return to school and work, demanding "recipes for busy times" such as Orichette with Chicken, Swiss Chard, and Reggiano Parmigiano. A wide range of dessert recipes, such as Coconut Panna Cotta, are also included. Throughout, Portale offers "flavor building" ideas for dressing up recipes, "thinking ahead" notes for staggering preparation, and dish variation suggestions. With 150 illustrations, thematic menus, what-to-drink advice, and a section on basics like stocks, the book presents a culinary calendar that works for year-round dining enjoyment. --Arthur Boehm

        Book Description

"When it comes to cooking, there are twelve seasons," says Alfred Portale, the world-renowned chef of the Gotham Bar and Grill restaurant. To him, each month is a season unto itself--not just because crucial ingredients peak at different points during the traditional four seasons, but also because each month carries with it a unique set of emotions and associations.

Alfred Portale's 12 Seasons Cookbook takes the home cook on a deeply personal journey through the year in food. Many chapters are ingredient-driven, such as May, which Portale dubs "The Big Bang of the Culinary Year," because of the proliferation of vegetables such as fava beans, asparagus, and morel mushrooms. August, entitled "Seize the Day," presents recipes that lend themselves to late-summer entertaining. "November--Giving Thanks" is devoted entirely to Portale's interpretations of Thanksgiving standards while "December--Celebrations" shares elegant holiday dishes as well as a selection of canapés and food to give as gifts. Portale also offers his unique approach to months like September in which he responds to the post-Labor Day return to work and school with "Recipes for Busy Times."

As in his award-winning Alfred Portale's Gotham Bar and Grill Cookbook, Portale provides instructions for planning ahead and for how to vary or expand recipes to accommodate ingredient availability and seasonality. He also includes essays on favorite foods and techniques, tips on preserving, advice on what to drink, and suggestions for thematic menus. Brought to breathtaking life with more than one hundred full-color photographs, Alfred Portale's 12 Seasons Cookbook captures the glory and possibility of every month of the year.

        4 out of 5 stars Ok.......2002-03-16

This cookbook is not as good as I expected to be, but does offer some decent recipes & good ideas for what best accompanies certain main dishes. The majority of the recipes are easy enough to do.

4 out of 5 stars Great Visuals and Inspiration, lacks Proper Detail.......2001-10-19

This is a fantastic book written by a fantastic chef. The physical quality of the book is terrific as is the layout of the pages. Especially striking are the pictures that accompany every recipe (Portale is known for creating some of the most stunning visuals in culinary, and all the recipes are captured splendidly). However, although he explains why he chooses a particular recipe for each of the "12 seasons", he does not go into any detail concerning the ingredients used. I was hoping for more of a "where and why" for the ingredients that make up each recipe. I will have to complement this book with another that details the peak seasons for ingredients that make up the recipes as well as how to select the best of them.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be afraid - dive in and mess up every pan you own........2001-08-09

I received this book as a gift from my mom for Christmas 2000...the timeline goes something like this: Voraciously read every recipe and narrative, groaning in ecstacy at the photos for the first 2 months. Displayed on cocktail table for guests to do the same for 2 months. Finally overcame intimidation and tried the recipes in 5th month! Dinner guests, who previously ooh-ed and ahh-ed over my cooking were stunned by the new circle of culinary bliss I had acheived. The recipes may be a bit initimidating, like you could possibly find baby turnips at the local supermarket to go with seared duck and roasted peaches (a winner - I subbed cubed, peeled turnips to good effect), but are well worth the effort. Honestly, invite guests who will be so grateful for the plates you set before them that they will jump up and volunteer to help clean up the kitchen later! Every recipe is worth the challenge and the mess... and its a good excuse to add new items to your kitchen equipment collection. If you don't cook, buy this book as a gift for your most kitchen-accomplished friend and ingratiate yourself in hopes of an invitation.

5 out of 5 stars Mouth-watering recipes suitable for all occasions.......2001-02-16

5 out of 5 stars Portale is a FOOD GOD!.......2000-12-07

Having had enormous success with Alfred Portale's previous book-"The Gotham Bar and Grill cookbook", I couldn't wait to buy this one. 12 Seasons goes into detail about ingredients that are "in season" for each of the 12 months throughtout the year. Its as if every month is a "season" - what a delightful concept!! This book brings out the artestry in food and makes you appreciate it's beauty and flavour. The recipes in this book are easy to follow and the final outcomes have all been impressive. I have been using both of Alfred Portales books as guides and educational tools in my quest to be a greater cook - and they have helped me tremdously. I have learned so much. Unlike other famous chef's cookbooks that I have purchased - Mr. Portale seems to have taken a concerted effort to "teach" his readers. He helps you to realize the beauty in cooking. That's what makes him a food god.
