    Book Description

Young Dane Weston's dream is to become a doctor. But it will take more than just determination to realize his goal, once his family is murdered and he ends up in a colony of street waifs begging for food. Then he ends up mistaken for a murderer himself and sentenced to life in prison. Now what will become of his friendship with the pretty orphan girl, Tharyn, who wanted to enter the medical profession herself? Does she feel he is anything more than a big brother to her? And will she ever write him again?

THE ORPHAN TRAINS TRILOGY : BOOK THREE

Immigrants flood into New York City by the thousands, the squalid streets home to thirty thousand destitute, vagrant children. Moved with compassion for their plight, seminarian Charles Loring Brace founds the Children’s Aid Society in 1853 and, for the next seven decades, transports trainloads of orphans to farms and ranches on the American frontier. Thrust into a vast, unknown territory, what will become of them?

Where will the wind blow next?

New York City, 1871. Fourteen-year-old Dane Weston comes home to an empty apartment. A gang of teenage boys has murdered his family, shattering his dream of becoming a doctor. Driven to the streets with other homeless waifs, Dane’s new occupation is begging for food. Worse things await—misunderstandings, imprisonment, and separation from his pretty orphan friend, Tharyn. The gentle breezes of the country seem worlds away, but still they sigh the poor boy’s name. . .

    5 out of 5 stars Timeless wisdom.......2000-02-01

My life has been one of contrasts. On the one hand I yearn for knowledge of the universe, how it works, why our world is the way it is, and I marvel at the accomplishments of technology and science. On the other hand I feel a deep connection with nature, I love to listen to the wind, to sit atop a craggy peak in solitude and contemplate my place among the little animals, the earth and the sky.

When I feel contemplative, I find great solace in the collection of quotations assembled by James. These are the words of timeless wisdom from a people who found the meaning of oneness with nature. James has captured, in roughly 70 pages, the spiritual essence of much of native-American religious and philosophical thought. The quotations she has collected span subjects from the meaning of life to parenthood and the pain and trial of old age. Here you will read words of wisdom from such inspirational figures as Chief Seattle, who helps us understand that "Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it," and Geronimo, who inspires me with words such as "Even if the heavens were to fall on me, I want to do what is right."

This is a short book. You can read it in less than an hour. It's not the volume of words that count, though. It's their meaning. I keep it near by and read it's timeless wisdom often. Sometimes, when I'm busy at my computer terminal, I take a moment to reflect on its prose, close my eyes, and meditate. And often, when the weather is good, I ride my horse to the top of the hill behind our house, gaze across the misty valleys to the hills beyond, breath deeply in the mountain air, and use their teachings and ancient wisdom to catch the whisper of the wind.

I have always enjoyed a good mystery and a breathtaking romance. Whispers on the Wind is both. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, awake until dawn just to find out what happens. If ever there was a man to fantasize about, it is definitely Max. It made my toes curl just picturing in my mind everything he speaks of. Definitely a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, sexy, riveting read; keeps you hooked until the end........1997-06-24

This is a fantastic read, one which kept me turning pages long after bedtime. Ms. Fletcher's ability to tell a story, a love story, is fantastic. It is sweet and sexy, and so is the hero. As a fellow romance writer, I admired Ms. Fletcher's characterizations-the characters leaped from the pages. Even minor characters were well-rounded. The dual love-story/ghostly attraction was funny, sexy, sad, and frustrating; all the emotions the characters felt. I clapped my hands when the heroine finally figures out part of the great mystery-I won't ruin it for you! You must read this book

    THE BLACK HILLS, 1876

It was a land where a man could ride for days without seeing anything but fragrant pines, an occasional deer, or a lone eagle soaring in the limitless blue sky -- a land where the Indian still roamed wild and free -- a land that drew together two lovers to embrace a passionate destiny neither could have foreseen.

    THE CHEYENNE

Accustomed to the ways of the white man, he returned to his tribe in search of a vision quest, to share with his people the glory and heartache of the last golden days before the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and to find the beautiful woman who haunted his dreams.

    ELAYNA

Sheltered and innocent, she shared every civilized woman's fear of the Indian, until she was kidnapped by the darkly handsome Cheyenne. Slowly, her disdain changed to desire beneath his hard, bronzed body, until she would make any sacrifice to keep him by her side forever.

Well Madeline Baker does it again. A Whisper in the Wind is a story to ponder about over and over again. All the characters in this novel were colorful and interesting to read about. At times you felt the joy and pain the Native Americans have endured in their lifetime. A wonderful read. I couldn't put the book down.

    5 out of 5 stars Something different.......2007-02-06

I can't write much of a review, since it seems obvious that the publisher doesn't want to give away the unexpected twist to this story. So I will merely say that it was great encountering a new, fresh story line.

A well written love story that transcends the normal, yet makes perfect sense.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good Time.......2006-08-21

Whispers In the Wind was a nice little story. At first when I started to read, I wasn't too sure that I would like this book. Once I got into it a little more I found myself enjoying it! This is just a fun book, not too serious and a fantasy indeed. Fun day of reading is how I would describe this book. I liked the characters and wish we would have known alittle more about Elizabeth's new life. I was glad to turn the page and see this book through...don't give up on it!

4 out of 5 stars Stretches and Massages the Imagination.......2006-02-10

Jones delivers yet another enjoyable story with 'Whispers in the Wind.' Dixon is in love with her best friend Elizabeth, but Elizabeth is happy with their close friendship and doesn't want more from their relationship. In fact, Elizabeth doesn't seem to feel comfortable in her own time. While on a camping trip the two friends go hiking and discover a new cave/tunnel. Scared to go in, Elizabeth eventually follows Dixon to the other side. They find themselves in the middle of a stagecoach robbery and a new dimension of time. After finding a way to return to home, Dixon is unable to convince Elizabeth to follow her back. Dixon reluctantly honors Elizabeth's wishes because she knows her friend has fallen hard for Rebecca, a woman they rescued after the robbery. After Dixon's return, she has to deal with the loss of her friend and get on with her life.

Admittedly, this story is extremely far fetched. But, isn't that why we read these stories? It's not fun when they're all the same. Jones uses her imagination to deliver a great tale with a surprise twist at the end. Her characters are dimensional and well-developed. In fact, she does such a masterful job telling her story, that the reader might actually begin to buy into the idea of time warps.

A great addition to any bookshelf. One you're sure to enjoy time and again.

3 out of 5 stars Fourth in an unusual fantasy quintet.......2006-12-10

This is the fourth volumes in a group of five books. Sharon Green initially started with the intention of writing two individual novels, but the tale grew in the writing into an unusual double trilogy.

Green herself described it in the afterword to the final book as an "odd series" organised into "two crossed trilogies in the form of an X."

One trilogy tells the story of the sorceress Chalaine and the sorcerer-prince Bariden. That trilogy starts with "The Hidden Realms", shares the middle book "Dark Mirror, Dark Dreams" with the other trilogy, and is concluded in the final book of the quintet, the appropriately named "Game's End.

However, "Silver Princess, Golden Knight," kicks off another trilogy within the same broader canvass, telling the story of Princess Alexia and the mercenary captain Tiran d'Iste, both of whom are shapeshifters. Their adventure, which includes both a romance and a quest for a kingdom, starts here, and continues as the two stories come together in "Dark Mirror, Dark Dreams", which is the middle book of both trilogies. The story of Alexia and Tiran is sort-of concluded in this book, "Wind Whispers, Shadow Shouts". The double titles denote this second trilogy.

The reason I say "sort-of-concluded" and the reason I describe this as the fourth volume rather than one of two ending stories, is that you are told at the very end that the result of Alexia and Tiran's story might be completely overturned if the final battle fought by Chalaine and Bariden goes the other way - so you have to read "Game's End" to see whether it does.

The linkages between the two stories are clearest in the middle book, where all four characters work together, and at the conclusion of "Dark Mirror, Dark Dreams" each of the two couples become the rightful King and Queen of their own Kingdom. In the final two books, each couple has to defend their newly-gained realm and people against attack by powerful evil from beyond the worlds.

If you are going to read this series, it helps to read each trilogy in order and to read "Game's End" last. Hence the sequence is

    1) and 2) "The Hidden Realms" & "Silver Princess, Golden Knight"
    (Either can be read first)

    3) "Dark Mirror, Dark Dreams"

    4) "Wind Whispers, Shadow Shouts"

    5) "Game's End"

This quintet of fantasy novels, written between 1993 and 1996, is rather more mainstream than some of the author's earlier works. Sharon Green has put a lot of effort into creating the personalities and magic powers of the heroes and heroines, and some of the other major characters. The plots - in both senses of the word - are also quite intricate.

Rather less effort appears to have been put into creating the worlds where the stories take place, the minor characters or most of the villains, who tend to be fairly two-dimensional and thinly sketched out - to such an extent that many of the places in the stories and many of the characters do not even have names. In places there is good use of humour but there could be rather more.

Overall as fantasy novels go this is average, by which I do not mean to damn the book with faint praise. It's not the best fantasy story you will ever come accross, but it's not the worst either.

The main thing going for this series is that it is such an unusual way to build a story as to make it interesting to see how Sharon Green put it together.

    3 out of 5 stars good but...........1999-11-23

this was an interesting read. If you like a good storyline and well developed charecters then you'll like this one. but you MUST start at the begining of the series or you'll be beyond confused. Sometimes it was hard to keep up with the charecters thinking- they are suppossed to be these super smart people but for the rest of us it should have been spelled out a little more.

    She runs…..

DESIRE IN HER HEART Fleeing in a raging blizzard, Mary is thrown from her horse and knocked unconscious. She'll have to keep a tight rein on her secrets to keep Carter off guard--even as her body's hunger for the lawman's touch threatens to betray her . . . .

Mary Costner's mother had left her half the share of a gold mine in Gregory Gulch, Colorado Territory. Mary's partner was Big Jim McCoy, a huge Irishman with a mean temper. To Mary, however, he was the father she never had. Mary dressed as a boy and went by the name of Mark so all the other miners would not bother her. The two hit several veins of gold. Every time they considered quitting, another vein showed up. Then one morning Mary woke up with a huge lump on her head, a knife in her hand, and blood everywhere. Big Jim had been murdered and Mary could remember nothing of the night before. Unable to do anything else, and determined to clear her name, Mary ran. She did not get too far before her horse threw her. Mary became unconscious in a snow drift.

U.S. Marshal Carter Monroe had the nickname "Coldhearted Monroe". He and his deputy, Rick McCallum, were on the way to see Carter's mother. Carter Monroe was one of the best at his job, but he was always on the lookout for The Carlson Gang, who had killed his sister long ago. Carter had managed to kill three of the five men thus far. They found Mary nearly dead. Carter cared for her until they reached Judith, his mother.

Finding herself in the home of a U.S. Marshal, Mary pretended to remember nothing but her name. She just wanted time to figure out what to do. In the meantime, Mary would help Judith. (Even with an opera!) And hot upon her trail was John McCoy and the two evil gunslingers, Sammy and Randy Carlson!

***** This is the last book in the Misfit series. The author, somehow, was able to make me care for all the characters throughout the entire trilogy. Each book is a stand-alone story, but if you read all three you will see just how brightly the writing talent of Brenda K. Jernigan shines! Past characters, such as Thunder, return for an encore. Be warned that there is a lot of adventure in the fast paced novel, so do not begin reading until you have plenty of time with no interruptions. Unputdownable! *****

4 out of 5 stars deep western romantic suspense.......2004-04-29

In 1870 Mary Costner accompanied by her brother Billy has proof that she owns a gold mine in Gregory Gulch near Pikes Peak. Her "partner" Big Jim McCoy is stunned not just because he feels someone is trying to steal his claim, but that someone is a female. The Marshal informs both that each has a share. Mary tells Jim that she will dress like a man and work as hard as or even harder than him as Billy leaves town.

Two years pass and things seem relatively smooth until one day Mary awakens holding a bloody knife near her dead partner. She foolishly flees into a horrific snowstorm, but is rescued by Marshal Carter Monroe, who takes her into his home. While he believes she has amnesia, he investigates Big Jim's murder expecting a link to the killing of his sister. As Carter and Mary fall in love, an unknown assailant abducts her, forcing the Marshal to decide between love and revenge. If he chooses the former, he might die, if he chooses the latter she might die.

Fans of western romantic suspense will appreciate this deep tale of love vs. vengeance. The crisp story line is vividly descriptive (my hands remain cold from the storm) so that the audience obtains a taste of Reconstruction Era Colorado yet still provides plenty of intrigue. Though the amnesia ploy feels ancient, the lead couple is a delightful pairing that keeps the ruse fresh as both struggles with unwanted love when each has a secret that they respectively believe would end any relationship between them. In turn, readers will have a fine time with this winner.

It made for excellent reading and we passed it along to our son in the military. We are awaiting more books by this author--do you have any idea if he will continue writing?

    Book Description

A one-room country school in rural Washington State is about the last place college-educated Trinity Mason pictures herself. Yet, committed to her grandmother's belief that the torch of learning must be passed on, Trinity perseveres, confident that God has a plan for her. A Torch for Trinity is a heart-warming story set during the early years of the tumultuous twentieth century. Wagon trains dot the horizon on the Oregon Trail as adventure seekers, such as Esther Wheeler, stake their hopes on a new start in the West. Blond, beautiful, and once a captive of the Seneca, Esther knows the ways of both the white man and the Indian. But she is unprepared to be the prize in an epic struggle between a warrior and an army scout. In Whispers on the Wind, who will earn the right to ride with Esther? One day changes everything for Mary Lou Mackey. Yesterday she was the blissful child of the prairie racing to her home in Venture, Kansas, her hands clinging to her horse's mane. Then she finds her mother dead, her pa has disowned her, and her love is gone. Despite everything, Mary Lou remains caught up in her own Cottonwood Dreams, but was it time to give up those dreams? The father who deserted her when she was eight years old now wants to see her, but to Magdelena Intissar it's too late. With a temper to match her magnificent auburn hair, she is about to give Garrett Lucas a run for his money as he attempts to escort her by train to this auspicious meeting with her father. In the rousing romance A Place to Belong, Maggie would rather face the perilous prairie than the painful memories of her childhood.

4 out of 5 stars Very inspirational book for romance lovers.......1999-05-02

Here are four complete romance novels for Christians. All are about American life in the nineteenth and early twntieth century. I liked them so much that I emailed two of the authors and they responded. Colleen Reese told me that "A Torch for Trinity" is based on the real life story of her parents. All of the stories are inspirational and I recommend them.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book!.......1998-08-24

Although I have not finished all four novels in this collection, the ones I have read have been fabulous! This is an excellent book for any Christian who loves romance books! I have found this book to be very inspirational!
