Book Description

"Why do I always see the numbers 444 (or 111, 333, etc.) everywhere I go?" is one of the most frequently asked questions that Doreen Virtue receives at her worldwide workshops. In her best-selling book Healing with the Angels, Doreen included a chapter that briefly explained the meanings behind these number sequences, and many people have commented that they carry the book with them everywhere to help them interpret the numbers they see daily.

By popular request from Doreen's audience members, Angel Numbers has been created to serve as a pocket guide containing the angelic meanings of numbers from 0 to 999. Designed to fit into a purse or pocket for easy transport, Angel Numbers provides an interpretation of more complex number sequences than was previously available in Healing with the Angels. This new book focuses on numbers such as 123, 337, 885, and so on.

Whether you're seeing these numbers on license plates, telephone numbers, the clock, or other locations, they're very real messages from the angels. Angel Numbers will help you instantly understand the meaning of these signs!

5 out of 5 stars Finally! .......2007-09-05

Having seen 3-4 digits that are the same (such as 444) for many years led me to search for the meaning. That was my introduction to Doreen Virtue, my favorite author. After reading Doreen's book, "Healing with the Angels", I found my answers. Now, with the Angel Numbers book, I can find more answers that lead to an even better understanding of what's going on in my life and can make positive changes. Seems like every time I purchase either book, I end up giving it away!

3 out of 5 stars Fun book.......2007-08-23

It was a fun book. I mainly got it to research up two numbers that kept on "following" me around. After that, i havent looked at the book. It's nice to know what the meaning of the numbers on your house is.. and your cell phone.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2007-08-13

This is a book that is interesting to read. I thought it would be a good addition to my numerology library but it is not in the same category.

2 out of 5 stars Vague.......2007-07-17

I feel that the interpetations of the numbers are very vague. They don't tell me much at all.

5 out of 5 stars Angel Translator!.......2007-07-15

This little book is one of the most valuable books in my spiritual library! I am continually amazed at how often I see the same sequence of numbers repeated over and over through out the day. When referencing them in this book, I'm easily able to understand the messages that are being sent through these numerical signs.
Just A Tip- Keep a copy of this book in your car, if you do a lot of driving, I've found that many times the same numbers will show up on multiple license plates when you are out and about.

The editors of Gnosis magazine present a fascinating primer on Western religious traditions. Since the early 20th century, seekers in America "were seized with a passion for the lore of mystic Asia," the authors explain in their introduction. Meanwhile, Western traditions seemed to slip out of vogue, especially in the recent realm of New Age spiritualism. But there is much magic and wisdom to be found in Western traditions, claim Smoley and Kinney, who have embarked on an ambitious mission: breaking down the fundamental differences between Eastern and Western traditions and then extracting the best of the West for today's seekers.

Because the editors are diligent about keeping the narrative accessible, clean, and intelligent (they are magazine editors, after all), this weighty material reads exceptionally smoothly. Starting with "Jung and the Discovery of the Unconscious," each chapter delves into the intriguing--and often little-understood--mysteries of the West, including Shamans, Alchemy, Hermetism, and Sufism. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Contemporary seekers on the hunt for an overview of the Western mystery traditions often face a small selection of dense, out-of-date tomes. Alternatively, Hidden Wisdom is a fresh, coherent, and accessible work that expounds many of the teachings of Western esotericism, examining its key figures and movements.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An excellent and concise examination.......2005-04-19

Richard Smoley and Jay Kinney, both editors for Gnosis magazine, have done an astounding job with collecting the majority of lesser known western faiths, and placing them in a easily readable format. Exploring everything from Gnostic Christianity to the Santeria religions of the Caribbean, Kinney and Smoley use floral language and informative resources to present a non-biased and idealogical explanation for the main tenets and history of several lesser known paths.

For the most part, their theology is credible, and their history is concise. The book also provides the reader with extensive suggested further reading lists at the end of each section. If religion and studies of the divine is your forte, Hidden Wisdom is a must-read, and must-read now. As a practicing Pagan, this book was immensely interesting, and I couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars A Balanced View of the Western Esoteric Tradition.......2004-08-18

Richard Smoley, former editor of the (lamentably) defunct magazine "Gnosis," has written an excellent introduction to the Western Mystery Tradition in all of its major forms: Hermeticism, Wicca, esoteric Christianity, Sufism, and "the Fourth Way," among others. As always, Smoley is balanced, objective, fair, and - above all - sane. There is nothing of the fanatic or obscurantist about Smoley, and he blends a wide knowledge of the field with bits of humor and insights gained from personal experience.

Smoley is an excellent writer - intelligent and engaging, without being pedantic or superficial. I have only one caveat about this book: those already familiar with these topics - including former readers of "Gnosis" - might find that the book covers familiar territory and offers little that is new. Still, even these readers might find it useful as a reference. But for those new to these topics, you couldn't do better than start with this book; Smoley is a trusted guide in a field too often inhabited by quacks, cultists, and uncritical enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars Updated, Expanded Gnosis Magazine Articles.......2002-07-22

Since the 1960's the West seems more interested in the Eastern Spiritual traditions than its often neglected own (kind of a reverse on the Western secular culture that is making inroads in the East!). The authors/editors of this book had their first go at at least making Westerners aware of their rich tradition native to their own culture with their magazine Gnosis. In each issue of Gnosis a particular theme was taken be it "Paganism" "Freemasonry" "Esoteric Christianity" or somethig else. In that issue they collected articles, book reviews and interviews dealing with that subject. The issue would be an excellent survey, complete with resources if one wanted to learn more on their own. Unfortunatley the magazine fell on hard times, and is no longer being produced, but the authors have hardly been hibernating -- this book is a fitting legacy to the magazine - with themes and traditions explored and written about in greater depths, generally, than the magazine.

Anyone who is interested in learning about the various Western traditions, some of which are right in front of us, and some are hanging on a thread -- this is just about your only resource! Grab on to it!

5 out of 5 stars THE guide to who's who & what's what in western esoterica.......2000-03-18

The authors have accomplished a rare feat by being simultaneously sympathetic yet impartial in describing such a broad range of spiritual teachings. They provide succinct but nuanced descriptions of these teachings, along with each's history and relationships to other teachings. Also included is much sage advice for those who may wish to pursue these paths, and annotated references for additional reading. This has clearly been a labor of love on Smoley & Kinney's part. It is well worth reading for anyone with the slightest bit of interest in spiritual matters, whatever their religious preference.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent, entertaining, extremely learned yet readable..........1999-10-17

In the flood of psycho-spiritual babble books, this one is a quiet winner. Like the magazine Gnosis which the authors edited and published for many years, this book is intelligent and well-balanced and shines a much-needed light on musty areas of Western spirituality. I found it very useful, especially the annotated bibiography for each subject - sufism, Gurdjieff, alchemy, shamanism, etc. And where else would you find out the real reason why Hitler didn't invade England...? Highly recommended!

Book Description

From Christian Science and the Jehovah's Witnesses to Soka Gakkai, Wicca, and Falun Gong, the last century and a half has seen an unprecedented growth of new religious movements, sects, and alternative spiritualities. New Religions offers an authoritative and lavishly illustrated guide to more than two hundred of these wildly varied groups and movements. The volume is organized according to an entirely new method of classification, which associates movements, sects, and spiritualities with the religious traditions from which they arose. Rastafarianism, for example, is shown to have its roots in Christianity, while Bahai is an offshoot of Islam. Included are both long-established groups like the Seventh-Day Adventists and the Hutterites and more recent movements like Santeria, the Unification Church, and ISKCON (the "Hare Krishnas"). In addition to Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Indian Religions, and the Religions of East Asia, sections are devoted to movements and groups inspired by Indigenous and Pagan Traditions, and by Western Esoteric and New Age Traditions. Particularly fascinating is the discussion of the religious offspring of Modern Western Culture, including Scientology, UFO-based groups (such as the Raelians), and even the worship of celebrities like Elvis and Princess Diana. Each entry clearly and concisely explains the history, beliefs and practices, and status in the world today of the movement or group in question. Special entries highlight broad topics such as New Religions in China as well as intriguing subjects such as Cargo Cults, Martial Arts, Astrology, and Feng Shui. Written by specialists, New Religions is a fascinating and colorful guide to the bewildering array of religious and spiritual options available to the modern seeker.

2 out of 5 stars Very innaccurate book.......2004-09-04

As with any kind of encyclopedia you will find a brief amount of info on a particular topic, and one hopes that the info there is both truthful and objective since your usually using a book like this for a report on something or maybe just for some advice. Since I worked for two years in a library I can say from direct experience that encyclopedias are like the internet. They are often just recycled information taken from other books or articles containing half truths. Reading this book gave me the impression of just this and that the researchers had done little if any actual reading of the sacred texts of any of these groups. And so While a lot of it may be true a small percentage is very innacurrate due to the authors inability to grasp the psychological depth of each system. In fact, because I read a lot of sacred texts, alot of the so called research of this book appears more like newspaper reporting. Like, Think I'll call the local Hare Krisha center up and ask em to give me brief description of what thier all about. You could just do that yourself without the personal filters of these authors and probably get a clearer picture. As a teacher of religious anthropology my impression of this book as a useful source of information is that it was written by people who's only real concern was to have thier names published in a book in order to help give them more credability so as to be considered authorities on religion. I would never reccomend this book to any students or teachers because it contains both an incredible amount of misinformation and also very little insight into the psychological aspects of many of these groups and systems, which to me is very disrepectful. To wrap it up, If like you McDonalds you'll love this book.
This is the McGuide to new religions. As long as you don't mind that thier may be just a little filler in your meat, and that your just eating fast food you'll be ok.

The book also ahs great design features and is fun to read and browse, providing authoritative, personable cultural contexts, a "cliff-notes" to who's who in the NRMs.

Book Description

In the celebrated Buffalo Woman Comes Singing, Brooke Medicine Eagle revealed her extraordinary spiritual odyssey from her first guided steps on the medicine path to her ongoing work as one of the most respected Native American teachers of the modern era. Now she shares a groundbreaking approach to spiritual transformation--by revitalizing the powerful ancient ritual The Ghost Dance.

Four centuries ago, when European invaders were ruthlessly plundering indigenous cultures, a Paiute tribesman received a vision of hope and resurrection, given by Father Spirit, to help survivors of the onslaught create a beautiful new life in the face of defeat, broken dreams, and death. That vision was celebrated in an ecstatic ghost dance honoring those who had perished.

Brooke Medicine Eagle explains how and why we are profoundly connected to The Ghost Dance. As she herself becomes initiated into the "illusion of death" and the wisdom of "heart-centered ascension," she teaches us how to confront our deepest fears, overcome our resistance to change, and renew our lives. Through prayer, music, and dance, Medicine Eagle provides us with the tools to bring about the final fulfillment of this profound ritual--by living in harmony with earth's rhythms, practicing sustainable living, honoring and sharing with all our relations, and freeing ourselves from the burden of possessions and possessiveness.

Perceptive, practical, and luminous, The Last Ghost Dance is a call to action, a challenge to raise up from the ashes of our desecrated planet a world that welcomes the full flowering of the spirit--and a new age of abundance, love, and peace.

5 out of 5 stars An exquisite work of literary genius!.......2006-12-16

This book is one of the most profound and well-written texts I have placed my hands on in years. Words cannot describe the beauty with which it has been written. The author obviously has her heart and head in the places of Divine Presence and that is clear within every letter of this work. Ironically, I purchased this book five years ago and only recently picked it up to read, finding it difficult to put down. Realizing that "when the pupil is ready the teacher will come," I know this was the right time for me to read this work, lending time to my own evolution placed it in my hands to read at the perfect opportunity to appreciate the gift residing within its pages. It could only be assessed in a negative fashion by those not fully blossomed to receive its rich nector. Thank you Brooke Medicine Eagle for investing your life energy in the creation of this amazing work and for the courage to place your reputation on the line for the sake of Sacred Truth.

1 out of 5 stars The Voice of Mediocrity is heard throughout the land.......2005-06-02

You can learn a very important lesson from this woman: how to make deception and plagiarism pay off. Did you know she is also a great female musician? So says one of her many self-promoting web pages. Brooke owes all the real female musicians on this planet a deep, heart-felt apology! If you can find a heart in there, that is. Oh yes...any New Age concept that $ells, you'll find this woman with her greedy hand in it. Crystal healing? You betcha! Feng Shui? Right again! Now she's even messing with the Messiah! Tres Goofy? This woman is laughing all the way to the bank! Check her out on the web...her background "history" has more twists and turns and redirections than the Mississippi. Every page I read has yet another interpretation of the roots of this unsavory tree. And her writing? HOO HAH! Save your money, kids. Want bad entertainment? Buy a used reading copy, then use it again to prop up some wobbling table. Better still, take it camping and recycle it in the noblest way possible. But please...don't squeeze The Last Ghost Dance. BLARGH!!!

5 out of 5 stars TEACHINGS FROM ONE OF OUR BEST.......2005-03-31

It is rather amusing to read the negative reviews of Brook's work. The majority of them are written by people with a fairly strong racist agenda - either racial purists who believe that anyone with Native blood should not teach non-Natives or people who believe that Native teachers should only teach the reader's expectations of Native shamanism. Brooke has never fit into the restrictive roles of these two types of people. She is and always has been a member of this Earth community first, her work a life-long process of speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves. This book is one outgrowth of that work, a work spanning decades. If you want to read about Brooke's training in the more shamanistic sense of it, you should look at Shamanic Voices by Joan Halifax. If you want to hear about Brooke's process, the things she thinks important for our world now, and the processes she thinks can help, then this book and Buffalo Woman Comes Singing are good ones. Brooke has helped many people, through her teachings, and her example, to find a way to live that transcends negative stereotypes, that transcends the reductionism that so many of us struggle with, and that reconnects all of us to the soul force and intelligence that is inherent in the world and that is our birthright to know.

1 out of 5 stars Mormon?.......2002-04-19

Very new-agey, not traditional Native American religion. I didn't read it all, I stopped reading when she starting espousing mormon beliefs about Jesus being Quetzecoatl and how he came to America in a conoe to spread the good word. It's like she just picked up the book of mormon, copied it, and added "native" words like "earth mother" and "sky father" to it. Very cheesy. Little too far out, even for me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to childhood.......2006-05-11

This book was passed along to me when I was pregnant with my first son. I wasn't really interested at that time, so I put it away and forgot about it. Over time, I realized how frustrated my son was in a world of plastic toys that broke easily, or didn't stay together to begin with. He was much more content to collect leaves in the park than to play with an action hero. When I became pregnant with my second son, I re-discovered this book and really looked at it. It seemed to validate much of what I was feeling, and I could see that my son had naturally gravitated to this lifestyle as well. This book helped us come up with other ways to make our lives more natural.

This book is not strictly Waldorf type. For example, Legos are suggested as a good open-ended toy in the book, where in a Waldorf setting, tree-blocks might be used instead because the Legos have a cold, sterile feel. This book is a combination of Waldorf/Steiner, Montessori and other "whole child" methods.

It is a great starting point if you want to give your children the best start to life.

5 out of 5 stars MY #1 PARENTING RESOURCE.......1999-05-07

I'll make it short. This book has been a great resource for me. I think it's wrong for people to write a review if they have apparently never read it. It covers so many different philosophies (Montessori,...) not just Waldorf.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful and practical guide to holistic parenting........1998-06-15

I give this book as a gift to all my expectant and new mother friends. It has chapters on child development, imagination and play, health, and education all from an integrated, holistic perspective. It is filled with beautiful color photographs and illustrations, practical advice and how-to information on making toys, children's games to play, etc. As a student of Waldorf Education, I recommend this book to all parents of young children who are interested in learning more about the Waldorf philosophy. Helpfully, the author of the chapter on education compares different educational philosophies including Rudolf Steiner (Waldorf), Piaget, John Dewey, Maria Montessori and others. A valuable and enlightening resource -- highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Odds are you'll love this book.......1998-05-15

First, readers of these reviews should be aware that Dan Dugan has made a profession of his near-fanatical opposition to Waldorf education. If he had read this book, he would have found that it integrates many educational perspectives, including Montessori, Paul Goodman, Carl Rogers, Robert Cole, John Holt, Rahima Baldwin, parent-teacher coops, home-schooling, etc. One of the contributors to the book is the editor of the Educational Review.

In my opinion this book is exquisitely designed, full of heart, and manifestly dedicated to opening a ground where adults and children can meet and learn from each other.

4 out of 5 stars Good ideas for personal meditation/spiritual drumming.......2005-12-12

This is a great book for those interested in using drumming in personal meditation or ritual type situations. It focuses on the more spiritual aspects of drumming, connecting with your drum, and has several examples of dedication and personal meditation rituals within the book. It includes a basic primer on drum types and rhythms but does not include much in the way of 'hands on' type information. The book also mainly focuses on Native American drum information and (unless this has been updated since the last publication) the retailer websites listed in the appendix are mostly out of date. However, this book would still be an excellent addition to a larger drum instruction library, particularly for those interested in developing a spiritual dialogue with drumming.

5 out of 5 stars Drum for yourself.......2001-07-11

This book primarily deals with those of you who are interested in drumming for personal reasons rather than for an audience. Personally I drum in a band and also I drum to myself for relaxation. Holly Blue Hawkins explains her reasons for drumming and teaches how one goes about solving lifes problems and answering questions over a drum session. No matter how long you have had a drum or how often you play, this book will change the way you pick up your drum and the way you treat your drum and most importantly you will learn what drumming means to you.

5 out of 5 stars A great beginner's course in karma and choices.......2002-12-10

I originally bought and read this book in the mid-1990s, after the first printing. It opened up my mind so much that I have to say it changed my life. I immediately lent it to a friend who was having similar difficulties in her life, and I have not seen the book since. I bought another copy now that the new edition is out, and in the seven or eight years it has been since the first reading I have studied similar ideas extensively; the book is still good but not as deep as I originally thought it was.

If you are searching for answers beyond those given by every well-meaning parishoner for the last 200 years, this is definitely the book I would say to start with. If you are curious about western ideas of karma but are tired of cracker-jack box explanations, this is a great next read. If you have a good working knowledge of metaphysical-type stuff published in the last 5 years or so, this book will not seem so life-altering, but still well-stated.

5 out of 5 stars Growing towards the light.......2001-10-30

This book is NOT for everyone. That is not to say that it shouldn't be. Simply put, you have to be at a point in your life where spirtually you are ready to grow, to give up the trappings of society and the idea that anyone or anything you can buy will ever truly make you happy. If you are at this stage everything in this book will be like a drink of water to a man dying of thirst. If you are not at this point in your life, this book will seem to be a confused, new-aged, new-wave unpractical way of thinking. Robin Norwood is a brilliant writer and she has achieved so much in her life. It is a pleasure to read anything she's written.

2 out of 5 stars Unconvincing.......2000-12-30

New Age religious beliefs (like multiple past lives and the idea that souls choose their parents before birth) form the foundation for this book. Yet the author makes little effort to explain these concepts or to provide evidence that could convince the reader. If you do not understand and believe in these ideas before reading this book you probably will not get much out of it. I know I did not. Putting aside the issue of prior beliefs, the author's arguments were not always well supported and sometimes appeared speculative.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating book - it changed my life........1999-04-08

I have read numerous 'New Age' books (some hokey, some helpful) and I must say this was the best. Robin Norwood's knowledge and wisdom radaite from the pages! The case histories are quite rich and make the book a real page-turner. It helped me understand how my life's events fit into a bigger picture and resolved the nagging question, "Why did this happen to me?".

4 out of 5 stars To believe or not to believe; that is the question!.......1998-09-17

This is a compelling book for one who has shied away from psychic phenomena throughout life. My grandfather was a medium. Using his abilities strictly as "entertainment" for small groups, he began experiencing frightening episodes after each time he performed his craft. Eventually he abandoned the practice altogether. Convinced it was "Satan's" work, he vowed not to delve further into such things and forbad his children to do so. Norwood, however, introduces a whole new aspect of psychic ability and reincarnation possibilities that intrigues (yet, because of my background, repulses) me. She matter of factly presents examples and personal insights that seem logical but also raises some unanswered questions re: God, the soul, the spirit and the differences between them. Her book, however, is one of the easiest to understand explanations of why we experience certain problems in life I've read--yet how can we know for certain? But in fairness, how can we know that any explanation of the purpose of life, including basic Christianity, is the real answer? I applaud Robin Norwood's efforts to provide answers to life's toughest questions and would recommend it to those who have open minds.

Book Description

Today's pluralistic society is filled with religious alternatives and options, and the choices for faith commitment have never been more numerous. Many of these new religious movements are growing at a far faster pace than most traditional Christian denominations. Why are they so appealing? Sociologist Ronald Enroth and a team of expert contributors provide an accessible handle on the key religious movements of our day, from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Jehovah's Witnesses to contemporary versions of Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. They assess what each movement believes, why they are attractive to so many, and how Christians can respond with grace and truth.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Overview.......2006-12-22

This book edited by Ron Enroth is a good basic overview of religions commonly referred to by evangelical Christians as "cults." Rather than use this term, however, as the title declares, it uses the term "New Religious Movements." This is a more recent term which does not carry with it the negative connotation as does the word cult. (As an aside, however, this term itself can be quite ambiguous.) The chapters are written by leading authors and provide general overviews of the religions discussed.

This work is best suited for those who are getting their first exposure to these groups. It is not intended for scholarly inquiry. Consider the book a small dictionary or encylopedia of select religious groups. The book can be read from cover to cover or referred to when seeking information about a specific group.

The first chapter (written by editor Enroth) defines the term New Religious Movements. Chapters two through ten summarize the beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses, Yoga and Hinduism, Unification Church, Latter-day Saints (Mormons), Astral Religion and the New Age, the Dali Lama and Tibetan Buddhism, Neopaganism, the Baha'i World Faith, and the Nation of Islam (in that order). There is no template the authors follow, allowing them to use their own method in their chapters. Some offer overt Christian/biblical responses to the faith they describe; others do not. Yet it is clear that the work is designed to introduce these groups to Christians. And inclusion of a group in the book necesarily implies that said group would be considered objectionable to Christians.

The last chapter is titled "Evaluating New Religious Movements." A three-pronged approach is followed. Using the Apostle's Creed as the standard statement of orthodox Christian belief, LaVonne Neff, first, instructs readers on how to identify a group as lying outside traditional Christian parameters (recognizing that not all the religions discussed have necessarily diverged from Christianity but nonetheless present some challenge to Christian teaching). Second, Neff, instructs readers to evaluate groups on the basis of how it treats its members. He offers a list of questions to ask a group/religion in carrying out such an assessment. Third, Neff, offers four ways in which New Religious Movements can help the church. To be sure, he does not mean that these groups can teach the church theology, for that is the primary point of contention between traditional Christianity and the New Religious Movements. Rather, his comments suggest that these groups call Christians/Christianity to instrospection and renewed concern for others.

Again, this book is geared to the novice and can be a good first look. One would want to springboard from this work to other more indepth works for further information.

Book Description

More than 40 years ago, Thomas E. Mails began a personal exploration of the spiritual richness of traditional Native American customs and secret ceremonies. Using his gifts as a talented illustrator and writer, he tirelessly worked to bring the spiritual culture of Native Americans to readers until his death in November 2001.

The new edition of Secret Native American Pathways: A Guide to Inner Peace authentically details the religious beliefs and rituals of four major tribes (Apache, Cherokee, Hopi, and Sioux) as practiced since ancient times. In this beautifully illustrated "how-to why-to" book, Mails' includes instructions for applying Native teachings to contemporary life. His central premise is that each tribe he discusses has triumphed over adversity through "walking the pathways" that led to inner peace, and that each of us can use these pathways to find our own inner peace.

For more than a century, Native American medicine men have predicted the advent of a new era in which the spiritual practices of their peoples would be revered by the white man and the Native American alike. Thomas E. Mails could be considered a principal figure in helping that prediction come true.

5 out of 5 stars Native American Pathways.......2003-11-12

Thomas Mails, a well known artist, spent most of his adult life painting Native American subjects and recording their vanishing culture. In Secret Native American Pathways Mails provides valuable information on Native rituals. A friend of some of the great Native American shamans and holy men of the last century Mails preserved much information about the spiritual paths of Native people. Mails died several years ago but the legacy he leaves in Secret Native American Pathways is invaluable and thanks to him will survive.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time, money, or energy on this book!.......2000-06-20

I detest writing negative reviews, but when the author says the following on page 230. My hands are tied.

"I do not in any instance give you enough guidance to duplicate any of the rituals. The native Americans would be rightfuly displeased if I did, amd I would be breaking confidences."

If Mr. Mails did not have permission to release accurate information he should not have written the book!

Now to my minor nitpicks about the book.

I was personaly offended at the title of chapter 4 "Marauding Apache".

On page 189 Mr. Mails talks of women as well as men being pierced in the sundance. Both sexes may participate in the sundance but only the men are pierced.

On page 211, 258, and 259 the author discusses the Sioux medicine wheel, and he lists different colors associated with the directions.

Page 211& 259: West-Black, North-Red, East-Yellow, South-White.

Page 258: West-Black, North-White, East-Red, and South Yellow.

Page 258 has the correct color associations according to Nick Black Elk's vision, and these same colors are shown on the cover of "Native Wisdom" Ed McGaa.

I have no idea why the author would have the colors right on page 258 and wrong again on the very next page.

5 out of 5 stars A Compassionate Guide for Life's Questions.......2004-07-11

Robin Norwood offers her readers clear compassionate insight into the many purposes of life on earth. The vignettes in this book open up a range of possibilities for rethinking any circumstance in your life. A death is seen as an agreement that has been made to fufill a karmic bond and when seen through this light, the circumstances can be viewed with a different understanding that perhaps allows more peace. A personality trait or skill that a person posesses may be the main issue the soul has chosen to work on in this life to evolve and expand. A relationship that causes great grief may be the perfect reflection of where we are wounded and helps to "wake us up." Life on earth is all about learning, evolving and expanding. There are no bad experiences when seen in this light, it is all perfect and always evolving. Every experience moves us into the next phase of our evolvement and if we can recognize where we are wounded by our experiences and move past the wound we can choose not to experience that circumstance again. A really beautiful, helpful and insightful book.

5 out of 5 stars Why Me?.......2004-04-27

Robin Norwood's book, Why Me, Why This, Why Now? is exactly what I needed at this horrific time of my life. I am re-reading it for the fourth time and gaining new insights once again. She helps me to understand and put some meaning into life's trials. I plan to read it often, most specially when I feel discouraged. I recommend this book to anyone who is suffering.

5 out of 5 stars Handbook for understanding our earth school lessons.......2001-04-20

Many ime I have said why. Many times why her/him and not me. My bodywork healer recommended reading this as part of my work with her on faily issues.I have always felt like there was something I was missing about why we have joy/misery/violence in this world. It is clear to me now how much work we are all really doing and that no matter how painful it can be we must continue to seek the reason.

5 out of 5 stars "why me... is almost a part of my life.......2000-01-28

I happened to come across this book sometime in 1993. Like a wiseman once said, you dont find books, rather books find you and so let me reframe my sentence and put it as "Why...found me in '93. At first I found the book almost incredible; I was even angry because it was challenging all my deeply rooted beliefs. But when I dared to pick it up for the second time I found the deepest wisdom in every single word. It was truly a healing experience. I have read this book countless number of times ever since and each time it touches me afresh! I recommend this book to anyone who feels a need to look beyond everyday life and it is a must for those who are looking for meaning in these repititive episodes of pain and joy that we happen to call- life.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to help understand the mysteries of life.......1999-09-28

I have read this book three times since 1995, when it was given to me by a friend after my son had passed away. And it is now my favorite book to give to those who are facing critical moments in their lives and who believe their "luck" has ran out. It has also enriched their spirits and helped them answer many questions regarding the mysteries of life. This is a MUST book for all who want to grow spiritually.
